Kalie Shorr The “Too Much to Say Tour,” Kalie Shorr’s first headlining tour. After being named to countless 2019 album of the year lists, including The New York Times, Variety and NPR, and performing for over a hundred thousand at Nashville’s New Year’s Eve celebration, Shorr plans to bring Open Book to fans across the country. The tour kicks off on January 31 at the iconic Exit/In in Nashville. The tour includes stops in Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles, among others. Get tickets and information for the shows here.
“I’ve been looking forward to my first headlining tour for a very long time. I’m so thankful that hard work is paying off and I’m getting to bring Open Book to some really great venues across the country. Kicking things off at Exit/In is special for me,” said Shorr, adding, “I’ve seen so many of my favorite bands there over the years and starting the ‘Too Much To Say Tour’ in Nashville feels so right. Naturally, I’ll be playing all of Open Book, but I’m also excited to reimagine some of my earlier work through a new lens. I can’t wait to get on the road, drink some tequila, and sing my heart out with the fans. Earlier this month, British daily paper The Guardian announced their “50 New Artists For 2020.” Out of those 50 international artists, Shorr is named fourth on the list and the only artist included from Nashville. I like puzzles. They are great time fillers, entertaining, help improve fine motor dexterity, teach reasoning skills and stimulate the brain. Besides, they are fun! There is nothing quite like that sense of accomplishment you experience when you are able to figure out the clues and solve the brainteaser. For all the above reasons, I even considered trying one of those escape rooms. Then due to a series of life’s little surprises, I found myself in a situation which was very similar to such an activity. The one difference being: this predicament was real! Little did I realize just how difficult it could be to breakout from an unfamiliar location. Possible examples include an amusement park or fair grounds, a large school campus, a mall, a jail or as in our case, a hospital. We were in an unfamiliar city because a family member was in the hospital there. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time sitting, waiting, sleeping, eating, and very little time walking, visiting, or any type of physical activity. After a few days, that lifestyle began to take a toll on our overall fitness. Thus, we found it necessary to create our own set of Hospital Olympic Events. The first activity of every day was sit ups. We each did one per day. (Okay, two if you count the one following

ith its art scene and unique coastline, this Orange County town may be literally picture perfect The Orange County town of Laguna Beach gets to have it both ways: It is both a beach town with a serious luxurious streak and a legit artists’ community. Laguna Beach’s art scene dates back to the early 20th century, when the area’s sea cliffs became a popular setting for directors of silent films. Today, dozens of galleries, including Kush Fine Art, Virga Gallery, and Laguna Art Lounge, dot downtown. But the artistic spirit of the city is also on display for anyone wandering the streets to see: Murals at The Hive, a cultural and arts hub in the Laguna Arts District, as well as at various other downtown locations, have proven highly Instagram-worthy. Nearby, the glassy Laguna Art Museum exhibits pieces by California artists and works that express life in the state. Every summer, the city also plays host to a handful of popular art festivals. The Sawdust Art & Craft Festival features local art in an outdoor setting—including
photography, jewelry, surf art, and hand-blown glass—while the Festival of Arts Pageant of the Masters pays homage to famous masterpieces with tableaux vivants (living paintings), where actors pose as the artworks. Much of the town’s beauty, however, is not man-made. Laguna’s six-mile, scalloped coastline includes romantic sea coves, untouched seaside cliffs, and a variety of distinct experiences. Main Beach is steps from the city center: Look for the nearby statue of The Greeter, a tribute to the longtime local who took on the role as a one-man welcoming committee for visitors. For a more remote experience, try walking the incredible staircase at Thousand Steps Beach, hiking the seaside cliffs at Crystal Cove State Park, or checking out La Tour, a.k.a. the Pirate Tower, a castle-like structure on Victoria Beach. Some of the best views, however, are found along the aptly named Top of the World hike, which starts in Alta Laguna Park. During summer and fall, keep your eyes out for giant blue, finback, and minke whales, or see the majestic creatures up close on a tour with operator Davey’s Locker.

Embrace Laguna’s luxury with a stay at one of the area’s oceanfront resorts. Enjoy Arts-and-Crafts architecture, a 20,000-square-foot spa, and a crystal-blue pool overlooking the ocean at the Montage Laguna Beach, or stay at the sleekly contemporary Surf & Sand Resort, where all 167 rooms have ocean views. Just across
Highway 1, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is a modern take on an oldschool resort (think barefoot-golf Fridays) and the only hotel in California to be named one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. One of the town’s coolest attractions, meanwhile, is happily free:
Go to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center to visit injured seals and sea lions that were rescued off the region’s beaches and are recuperating before being returned to the wild. The small, family-friendly center, which opened in the 1970s, was the first of its kind in California.

President’s Family On Monday, Feb. 17, the Presidential Site is hosting ‘Live! Presidents’ Day’ from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. A Benjamin Harrison enactor will play President Benjamin Harrison for the day as guests tour the home where the 23rd President lived. Guests will meet President Harrison, First Lady Caroline, and members of their family and staff as they tour their original home, furnished with an outstanding array of Gilded Age finery and White House mementos. Live enactors engage with guests as if it were 1891 and the Harrisons are home from the White House for a brief trip. Visitors can also explore the new exhibit, Protect the Vote! which explores the election process and how it’s changed over the years to secure a fair and free election. “Protect the Vote!” at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site shows how the United States voting process has changed over the years to become more secure. The new exhibit explores the evolution of voting technology over time and the political instances which led to those changes. With this new exhibit opening during a presidential election year, the Presidential Site hopes to inspire confidence in the electoral process by reveal-
ing the sustained efforts and advances made to protect and ensure a fair and free ballot. The exhibit will also feature more about President Benjamin Harrison’s role in protecting the voting process and his involvement with the Federal Elections Bill, which would have protected the African American right to vote had it been successful. “Leveraging technological innovation to help ensure fair and free elections has been fundamental to our system of self-government over the past two centuries,” said Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site President & CEO, Charles Hyde. “It goes hand-in-hand with expanding voting rights and inspiring public confidence in the mechanism by which they choose their public officials.
These remarkable artifacts on display truly tell the story of where we’ve been, where we are--and what the future might hold for us--as a nation.” “Protect the Vote!” is part of the New Century Curator Initiative, a partnership between the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and IUPUI’s Museum Studies program. This partnership offers an innovative opportunity for Museum Studies students to assist in developing an exhibit for the Presidential Site. It’s a career-launching opportunity for a top-tier student to explore and interact with a nationally-significant collection. The 2019 Curatorial Fellow is IUPUI student Brianna Jackson. “Protect the Vote!” will run through Election Day, Nov. 3. Tours run on the hour and half-hour, and last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Hours are Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for active military, veterans and seniors, $7 for children 5-17 & college students with ID, free for members and children ages 4 and under. As the name suggests, the northern lights become more pronounced the further north you go, and Minnesota’s location makes it one of the best states in the lower 48 to view them. There’s a perfectly scientific explanation for the aurora borealis phenomenon (more commonly known as the northern lights), and we’ll get to that in a minute. But when you see it in person—weaving, flickering and pulsing across the night sky, lighting up the stars with its impossible river of greens, purples and reds—it just feels like magic. Like the universe is reaching out to you, personally, and waving hello. One slightly less obvious reason why Minnesota is an incredible place to view the northern lights? Our abundance of inland lakes. Prolific northern lights photographer Travis Novitsky explains: “My favorite spot is on the south shore of any inland lake in northeast Minnesota. Being on the south shore means you get a great view of the lights looking north over the lake (as their name implies, northern lights are often most visible in the northern part of the sky).” Unlike other states that might have one or two ideal spots to view the northern lights, Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes offer borealis chasers a practically unlimited supply of unique spots to view and frame them. Contrary to popular belief, there is no one season for northern lights, but that doesn’t mean weather has no effect on light activity. In fact, northern lights can be predicted quite accurately by following weather conditions—just not the weather conditions here on Earth. What you want to follow is space weather, primarily the solar wind stream and solar flares of the sun. According to the popular science website howstuffworks, aurora borealis occurs, “when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact with elements in the Earth’s atmosphere. As the electrons enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere, they will encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen at altitudes of 20 to 200 miles above the Earth’s surface. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of -36- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ February, 2020

the meeting.” Novitsky uses spaceweather.com as his primary resource for “keeping watch” on northern lights activity. “If there’s a chance of activity, [the site] will tell you about it—sometimes as many as three or four days in advance. I check that website almost every day.” The vast, open skies of northern Minnesota are ideal for viewing the northern lights. Undisturbed by the light pollution of Minnesota’s urban areas, natural darkness reigns as you venture into the northernmost reaches of the state. Here are a few of the best spots in northern Minnesota for catching the aurora borealis: Cook County visitors can frequently see the northern lights and Milky Way shining over Lake Superior and along the Gunflint Trail. Voyageurs National Park offers expansive views of unpolluted skies from its waterways, where visitors can see impressive meteor showers and northern lights shows.
To Do:
he Northern Lights
Northern Lights at Gooseberry Falls State Park Travis Novitsky Lake of the Woods and the Northwest Angle, where there is a panoramic view of the waters and forests by day and, sometimes, the Milky Way and northern lights by night. Separated from the rest of Minnesota by Lake of the Woods, the Northwest Angle is the northernmost point in the continental U.S. Outside of northern Minnesota, other destinations across the state, remote and urban alike, provide ideal stargazing conditions: In the mid- and southern parts of the state—including Park Rapids, St. Cloud, Stillwater, Lake City, Mankato and Rochester—locals can see constellations on any clear night, and these cities have been known to host an occasional northern lights display. Just miles from downtown Minneapolis, Silverwood Park hosts after-dark events for visitors to explore and learn about the fascinating things that occur outside after the sun sets.
CELESTIAL PHOTOGRAPHY & LEARNING VACATIONS Capturing an incredible photo of the northern lights is possible with most types of modern cameras—just make sure your camera allows for manual shutter speed control, because capturing a truly stunning shot requires an exposure of 10 to 30 seconds. That likely rules out the camera on your smartphone, but leaves most DSLR and mirrorless varieties in the mix, including many relatively inexpensive ones. Other than manual shutter speed, you’ll also need a sturdy tripod to keep your camera steady during those long, night sky exposures. If you’re just starting out with night photography, there’s no better introduction than a photography workshop. Limited to 10 or fewer participants, these beginner-friendly learning vacations will guide you through the basics of night photography via a combination of classroom-based learning, shooting time and one-on-one instruction. Novitsky also recommends picking up a book on night-time and low-light photography and giving it a good read. Once you’ve got a grasp of the basics, it’s just about practice, he says. Of course, you won’t catch the northern lights every time you go out shooting, but you’ll find plenty of other, more common night sky photo ops in the North Star State. Rural Minnesota’s deep, dark skies are rich with celestial displays such as meteor showers, shooting stars, the Milky Way and star constellations. To learn more about celestial displays and to share your enthusiasm with younger family members, there’s nothing better than a trip to one of Minnesota’s planetariums. Most planetariums offer regular public showings, and private group showings by appointment.
