As a child, I thought I wanted to go through a haunted house. However, my very practical mother was wise enough to nix that idea. My sister, on the other hand, figured I might like it. So one night she and a friend who was sleeping over decided to make our parent’s bedroom into a miniature version of a haunted house just for me. I wasn’t allowed to watch the preparations lest the element of surprise be lost. There was a lot of whispering and much giggling with an occasional trip down the hall to the kitchen for more props. It must have been one of those rare occasions when mother was working late or I’m sure she would have had a very strong opinion about it. I don’t remember her being home, but I do remember daddy suggesting I go ahead and get ready for bed while waiting. Any ideas about what happened? I fell asleep. End of story. I never did find out what they planned or got accomplished. And I have no idea how scary it was. I was five and she was ten. How scary could it be with no props other than a blanket, three old Halloween masks and a few dull kitchen knives? As an adult, I am not a fan of haunted houses, although it is a big business. I have an acquaintance who works on costumes and props year round. She looks forward to it much the same as most
people anticipate Christmas. I too have a yearly event which I await with pleasure. We all have things in our lives which occur annually: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, family reunions, medical checkups, etc. Before this list becomes depressing, let’s move on to some fun ones: picnics, fireworks, fairs, parades, and one I always enjoyed: a trip to the apple orchard. My favorite season is Autumn. Fall weather makes the perfect setting for a trip to the country. Every October, we visited an apple orchard where we found a long list of varieties of this extremely popular fruit. Nothing matches the sweet juiciness of a red delicious apple. Others prefer the tartness of a Granny Smith, or Jonathan apples. Golden delicious is good for baking while Gala apples are particularly good dipped in caramel. Personally, I don’t care. I like all of them. We spent many an hour sorting, washing, cooking, straining, seasoning and canning applesauce. But my favorite was the days when we were ready to begin the process of turning the applesauce into apple butter. By adding cinnamon and sugar if needed and then slow baking for hours and hours, we filled the entire house with the wonderful aroma. Our local apple orchard is no longer in existence and my schedule is such that I don’t have time to make apple butter, but I have found a local business which sells a brand which truly tastes just like
‘mom used to make.’ Apple butter in itself is great on toast, but recently I heard of a new way to use it. APPLE BUTTER BREAD 1 c. apple butter 1/3 c. olive oil ½ c. sugar ¼ c. brown sugar 1 large egg 2 tsp. vanilla 1 ½ c. flour ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. soda 2 tsp. cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and sugar a 9” x 5” loaf pan. Beat apple butter, oil, sugars, egg and vanilla. Add dry ingredients. Stir well until just evenly blended. Spread in pan. If desired, sprinkle with crystalized sugar. Bake approximately 50 minutes. This is a recipe which is memorable without being scary. It doesn’t need a mask or covering of any kind. Eat it as is, drizzle with glaze or top with a dollop of . . . what? Apple butter, of course. What else? Welcome Autumn!

Ghost Tours in
Anchorage, Alaska
ANCHORAGE - Step into the underworld of Anchorage—a hidden gathering of ghosts and spirits—on this walking tour through some of the city’s most haunted sites. It’s the most unsual perspective you can get of Alaska’s largest metropolis
Meet the Local Spirits
You’ll spend most of the time on your feet, taking in the sights of downtown, walking through alleys and bars…and meeting spirits. You may encounter the Friday Night Man who wafts through the Anchor Pub & Club, formerly the Empress Theater, on his way to what once was the projection booth, or the little girl who bounces on beds at the Historic Anchorage Hotel. The ghost tours start on the far end of Fourth Avenue, at the site of a former travel agency said to be haunted by Muriel Pfeil, who died in a 1976 car bombing after a bitter divorce from her attorney husband. It ends
about two hours later at the 13th stop, the Historic Anchorage Hotel, where 32 “entities” refuse to check out. One of them shakes shower curtains, while a boy and girl are sometimes seen running up and down the halls holding hands. Your guide on this exploration of the undead is Rick Goodfellow, a dapper man in a top hat, tails, and Hemmingway beard. Together, you’ll weave and wind down city streets and alleyways, stopping for stories of history, hauntings, and unsolved murders— like the spot in front of a former Turkish bathhouse where, in 1921, the city’s first chief of police was shot in the chest... with his own gun. http://www.ghosttoursofanchorage.com/

Haunted Arizona From hotels you might never check out of to abandoned gold mines, these spots are crawling with things that go bump in the night. Happy haunting! 1. Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park (Yuma) Open for less than 35 years, this former prison managed to house over 3,000 inmates during its brief period of operation. Although no executions were performed, 111 prisoners died of illness during their incarceration. These days, the former prison is a museum, and paranormal activity has been reported all over the facility, but most accounts come from the “dark cell,” otherwise known as solitary confinement. Those brave enough to step foot inside can do so at their own risk 2. Vulture Mine (Wickenburg) Ghost towns are creepy enough already, but an abandoned mine in a ghost town? The thought of that alone is enough to send us running for the hills. Once a successful gold mine, this dilapidated building is absolutely crawling with ghosts of workers who perished in tragic accidents. Visitors have smelled the aroma of food cooking in the mess hall and seen apparitions standing by an ironwood tree outside that served as a gallows 3. Hotel Vendome (Prescott) Constructed in 1917, this century-old hotel harbors quite a bit tragedy. The wife of a former owner committed suicide in Room 16 after her husband failed to return from a nighttime grocery run. Countless
guests have seen the woman, Abby, roaming the halls with her cat. Both spirits are said to be friendly entities. Meet them for yourself. 4. Jerome Grand Hotel (Jerome) Easily one of Arizona’s most infamous haunts, the Jerome Grand opened in 1927 and served as a hospital for many years. Numerous patients died here, some from natural causes and others by suicide or murder. All of the anguish associated with disease and death is still harbored within these walls, and you can experience it firsthand. 5. Hotel Monte Vista (Flagstaff ) With an entire tab on their website dedicated to ghost stories, it’s safe to say guests of the Monte Vista have witnessed some inexplicable Arizona hauntings. Room 305 was even featured on the TV show “Unsolved Mysteries,” as a spectral woman is often seen sitting in a rocking chair. Other sightings include a phantom bellboy, a baby in the basement, and a

dancing couple, among others. 6. Old Gila County Jail (Globe) From former prisoners out for blood to their innocent victims seeking vengeance, spirits of all kinds can be found inside this creepy jail. Over a century old, many people died here while the prison was still operating and they do not hesitate to make their ghostly presence known. 7. Orpheum Theatre (Phoenix) home to one of the spookiest Arizona ghost stories. Legend has it that a ghost named Mattie haunts the wings of this elegant theatre. Was she a performer? Or maybe an audience member who longed to be part of the show? Nobody knows for sure, but she’s definitely a playful spirit who loves running up and down the rows of seats.

A Haunted Hotel, Cemetary & Prisons,
THE STANLEY HOTEL
ESTES PARK - Author Stephen King got the idea for “The Shining” while staying at this sprawling, 109-year-old hotel in Estes Park. In the 1970s, the hotel’s splendor had faded due to lack of care and investment. It might have eventually succumbed to the wrecking ball, if not for the fortuitous visit. A stay of one night was enough to inspire his third major work and first hardcover bestseller, which remains a landmark masterpiece in a long and well-known list of novels. Children’s laughter is often heard in deserted hallways and ghostly piano music from the empty ballroom. There’s no shortage of spooky inspiration at the Stanley; in fact, the hotel is so haunted, they offer nighttime spirit tours that take you to some of the creepiest areas of the hotel, including an underground tunnel.
MASONIC CEMETERY
CENTRAL CITY - Unexplained orbs of light mar photographs taken at night, and a little boy has been seen following visitors around the grounds, ducking behind trees whenever they try to talk to him. Another strange character — a beautiful woman in black — appears twice a year and places columbines on the grave of resident John Edward Cameron. Any attempts to find out more about this mysterious woman have been fruitless — she vanishes into thin air when visitors approach. While wandering the cemetary after dark is considered trespassing, the Gilpin County Historical Society leads Creepy Crawls around the city’s ghostiest sites each October.

alloween is not the only time to have a chilling encounter in Connecticut, but there’s something about autumn evenings that can really give you the chills. There are many places in Connecticut where ghosts are said to lurk; in fact, Connecticut is said to be one of the states with the most paranormal activity in the country. After all, this is where the nation’s first witch trials and hangings occurred – three decades before the more famous trials in Salem, Mass. Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours are held at the Mark Twain House and Museum In Hartford. This 25 room Victorian mansion is where Mark Twain lived and wrote from 1874-1891. It is where he wrote his famous “Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
The home is said to be haunted by the ghosts of Samuel Clemens, himself; his daughter Susy who died in 1896 of meningitis; and George Griffin, a freed slave who worked for the family. This National Historic Landmark features an interior design by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Filled with haunted history, dark tales, and Victorian traditions surrounding seances and spiritualism, these nighttime tours are as educational as they are goosebump-inducing. Participants will hear lots of creepy tales — and learn about Mark Twain’s interest in the supernatural. The Mark Twain House has been featured on Syfy Channel’s Ghost

Fantasy Fest
The undisputed crescendo of Key West’s 40th annual Fantasy Fest is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 26, when spectators can marvel at elaborate floats and exotically costumed marching groups during the Bud Light Fantasy Fest Parade.
KEY WEST - Themed “In Tune But … Off Key” in a salute to musical merriment of all kinds, the masking and costuming celebration takes place Friday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 27, with a madcap medley of events for revelers. Tens of thousands of people, many arrayed in outrageous costumes, are expected to throng the island’s historic downtown streets to view the famed parade. Floats and costumes are likely to reflect the festival’s musical theme, inspired by everything from rock-and-rollers and disco darlings to campy musical theater, operatic antics and kids’ singalong ditties. Many float entries each year include music, moving parts and elements that tower over the audience.
Creativity and artful design are rewarded with prizes as well as enthusiastic responses from Fantasy Fest crowds. Grand marshal of the 2019 parade is Lofton “Coffee” Butler, a Key West musical icon who has entertained audiences including the Beatles and former U.S. president Harry Truman during his stellar career. Pre-parade activities begin at noon Saturday with the open-air Duval Street Promenade, where vendors offer masking and costuming finery and accessories. Live entertainment, food and libations add to the festival frolic. At 7 p.m. the Bud Light Fantasy Fest Parade is to “tune up” and take off from the intersection of Key West’s Southard and Whitehead streets. The parade typically includes dozens of huge motorized floats, island-style bands, marching groups and street dancers garbed in lavish sequined and feathered costumes. Backed by a “soundtrack” of spectators’ cheers and applause, participants are to rock their way down Whitehead toward the Gulf of Mexico, turn onto Front Street and then proceed up Duval to the Atlantic Ocean. Jungle Island MIAMI — South Florida’s popular eco-adventure attraction reinvents an ancient Buddhist tradition with a Magic City twist through the debut of Luminosa, Festival of Lights through Jan. 8. In partnership with Zigong Lantern Group and China Lantern International, the park features a nighttime jungle filled with giant lanterns. They are lit by more than a million LED lights and beautifully hand-crafted out of colorful silk by Chinese artisans. Luminosa will take guests on a memorable journey through light across 13 of the park’s 18 acres. The journey tells a magical story of the jungle, which begins with an exploration of wildlife, birds, bloom and the beautiful Biscayne Bay. It then writes a chapter into the future through a story of transformation, rooted in adventure and infused with Miami’s new vibrant urban art identity. “Luminosa at Jungle Island is certain to be one of the most Instagram-worthy and talked about events of the season,” says Curtis Crider, Jungle Island’s general manager. “Between the rich history behind the festival and its
beautiful pageantry set within a jungle-like setting, this must-see installation will be a celebration of two cultures coming together and the rebirth of an iconic South Florida attraction.” A few of the visual delights will include oversized orchids and flowers, a demure cassowary and striking silk parrots in the Birds and Blooms exhibit; a sea of glowing jellyfish in the Biscayne Bay display; some of the world’s rarest animals down Jungle Trail; to a 114-foot long by 26-foot tall panoramic rendition of an iconic Miami destination decked out in Chinese graffiti art in the Miami Style exhibit. All lanterns will be illuminated by environmentally-friendly LED lights and made out of water-proof and fire-resistant materials, supported by steel frames. Elie Mimoun, Partner at ESJ Capital Partners, owners of Jungle Island, adds: “Our vision for the evolution of Jungle Island is to include regularly scheduled events and experiences that bring the spirit of the jungle to life. Traditionally, the Lantern Festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival. The lanterns are thought to symbolize people letting go of their pasts and celebrating a new future, much like Jungle Island. “Our joint effort with Jungle Island has influenced our design team to create something truly extraordinary,” adds Justin Corsa, executive director USA, China Lantern International. “Local Miami flair combined with eastern craftsmanship will result in one of our most creative and innovative exhibits to date.’’ Tickets are now on sale. Haunted Savannah By Kathleen Walls Publisher www.AmericanRoads.net
Savannah has so many haunted spots it’s almost easier to say “what’s not haunted?” Here are a few highlights, many from the Haunted Savannah Walking Tour led by Monica. There are no theatrics or make believe spooky stuff in her tour. She is a long time local and knows a lot of history so the tour is very interesting. In 1733 when the Yamacraw chief, Tomochichi, befriended George Oglethorp and suggested a good place to built Savannah, he neglected to mention this spot was on top of an Indian burial ground. One possible reason Savannah has been called “America’s most haunted city.” The residents created a cemetery for their dead right in the heart of the small settlement. About half of the original 114 settlers had died by the first year. One of the first deaths was the only doctor which was not a good omen. But the town grew and the settlers repeated the initial problem about 17 years later. They wanted to the site of the cemetery for town growth. They called on all the loved ones to come move their dead to the new cemetery. The problem was many of the dead had no family left to move them, so they stayed behind under what is today The Collins Quarter, a popular bistro. Colonial Park Cemetery, now the city’s oldest public cemetery, was the place chosen to bury Sa-24- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ October, 2019
vannah’s dead after 1750. It is no longer accepting burials and became a city park in 1896. Bonaventure Cemetery is older, dating to 1846 but began as the privately owned Evergreen Cemetery. Fifteen hundred Confederate dead are buried in the north section of Laurel Grove Cemetery while the south section of the cemetery is one of the oldest black cemeteries still being used. All of them offer tours and you can bet there are many ghostly tales in each. Marshall House, now a hotel, is the scene of a Union Soldier hunting his arm. It was used as a hospital when Sherman arrived in town on his march to the sea. It also served as a hospital during one of the many yellow fever epidemics. Sure enough when they began excavating and working on building the hotel. Sure enough the crew discovered many bones of arms and legs. Today, many guests awake finding their arm outstretched with a hand on their wrist and their forehead. Monica told us, “Today, it’s not a really pricy hotel but back in the old days, it cost and arm and a leg to stay there.” The Owen-Thomas House, now owned by Telfair Museum, was the next stop on our tour. This house has so many strange stories dating back to slavery days when slaves painted the roofs, doors, and windows a color known as “Haint Blue” as protection from restless spirits. One spirit often seen wan-
dering the house is the ghost of the man from the 1830s. Another is believed to Margaret Thomas, the last private owner. Margaret was known for throwing elaborate costume parties where everyone dressed in 19th century costumes. She died in the 1950 and left the house to the Telfair Museum. Many people in the house at night have seen the Lady in Gray, believed to be the spirit of Margaret Thomas. This spirit strolls around the garden, which Margaret loved in life, wearing a large hat and a gray shawl. One of my favorite stories and the last one Monica told us was about the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace across from Wright Square. Her birthplace is open to the public as a museum. Beyond the stately façade of the magnificent home, there is a love story. One that hints of a love stronger than death. Willie and Nellie Gordon, Juliette’s parents, lived here during the turbulent times of the Civil War and on into the 20th century. Perhaps they still abide do. Willie died first in 1912. Family members feared for Nellie’s sanity because they had been so deeply in love throughout their lives, but she lived out her days peacefully until her death in 1917 secure in the belief she would
one day be reunited with Willie. Moments after her death, both her daughter-in-law, Margaret Gordon, and a family butler saw Willie in his Confederate general’s uniform coming to meet his beloved. Staff at the museum reports sightings of Nellie to this day. Naturally most of the restaurants have their own stories. The Pirate House is one of the best known. It is reputed to have some lurking in its attic and in the old tunnel once used to shanghai drugged sailors. If you ask, the staff will show you the entrance to a tunnel from the restaurant that ran underground to the nearby river. Almost as old as the city
itself, the Pirates’ House began as an inn in 1853. It catered to the seafaring men who frequented the port city. The line between honest seaman and bloodthirsty pirate was thin in those times. Blackbeard himself may have visited the inn on one of his forays into Savannah. Robert Louis Stevenson enjoyed the inn. He is said to have modeled the infamous Captain Flint of Treasure Island on one of the habitués. Stories of disappearing full glasses of run attest to the spirits favorite spirit. Another less known story relates to the 19th century 17hundred90 Inn. The stories
vary as to why but supposedly a young woman named Anna Powers leaped to her death from the second-floor balcony. Anna and her lover have been sighted hanging around the inn’s kitchen, frequently causing instruments to fly through the air. Perhaps it’s just a lover’s quarrel about his overlong absence. As for the most paranormally active room at the property, that belongs to Room 204 where a female spirit refuses to leave the living alone. The inn has revved up the scare factor by placing a mannequin dressed as Anna at a second floor window near the room. Looking up at night it looks like she is just reading to jump. Savannah’s most iconic ghost story involves the Waving Girl stature which sits on the riverbank. Florence Martus, the model for the stature, fell in love with a sailor, she promised him she would be the first thing he saw when he returned. He sailed away, and for 50 years Florence waved to each returning ship. Her lover never returned, and Florence died in 1943, still waiting. Perhaps Florence’s spirit still lives on because witnesses report seeing the stone cloth she holds waving in the breeze. So many stories played out beneath the live oaks with their dripping Spanish moss in Savannah that many had to leave a lasting imprint on this ancient city.

So distraught, Lucinda killed herself by jumping off the edge of a cliff onto Stony Hollow Road. People driving on the road claim to see Lucinda’s ghost walking around. Then there is a belief you will perish the very next day.
Cresco Theatre
CRESCO - In 1915 the Cresco Theatre and Opera House opened as the Cresco Opera House. Atchison Sallie House Cinteer Villa
T
he previous owners Cinteer Villa, above, were so terrified of what could happen at the residence that they kept the house off-limits for everyone! The people of Atchison were aware of this house and all that went on inside, and the current owners are happy to share it with them and all who wish to explore the paranormal. The house was believed to have been used for funeral ceremonies for a time, where the dead would be laid out for viewing in one of the great rooms. This could be why there is such a high concentration of spirits and activity! If you were to enter the attic you’ll be greeted with an immediate heavy presence
caused by the many spirits that still linger there. And if you dare enter the basement, you’ll find out exactly why the owners refuse to ever go down there! Do you have what it takes to investigate this extremely haunted building? Perhaps even investigate alone in the room that Isabel sits!? Haunted Rooms occasionally hold ghost hunting events at this location on weekends which includes the ghost hunt and sleepover! Another home in Atchison is the Sallie House. nyone who has an interest in the paranormal has most likely heard of it as being one of the most haunted places in Kansas. The house was built some time
between 1867 and 1871 and was occupied by the same family, The Finneys, for more than a century. In 1993, Debra and Tony Pickman moved in and almost immediately the strange activity began! The family dog would bark at thin air. hen the activity escalated to electronic disturbances, and poltergeist activity in the form of their child’s toys rearranging themselves. It is generally believed that Sallie was a girl who died in the house at the hands of her doctor in the 1900s.

Haunted Road Trip
Antietam National Battlefield - Sharpsburg Travel some 259 miles through Maryland to brave some of the most haunted places in the state. Starting at the home of founder of Hagerstown, Jonathan Hager, learn about restless spirits on a guided Walking City Park ghost tour. Choose 6, 8, or 9 p.m. Oct. 5, 11, 19 or 25. Led by candlelight. Next stop, the Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg. Over 23,000 soldiers were wounded, missing, or killed at this scenic battlefield. Explore the grounds and you may spot a ghostly figure or smell the faint scent of gunpowder. Be pushed up Spook Hill near the historic village of Burkittsville. There’s a spot on Gapland Road where you can put your car in neutral and it will be pushed up the hill. Although this phenomenon may seem paranormal, it’s actually an optical illusion. Still, it’s fun to try.
On Jericho Road near Kingsville, there is a covered bridge. Sme say that if you visit the historic Jericho covered bridge at night, you’ll spot supernatural bodies hanging from the rafters. Many believe this bridge was used for lynching years ago and that the spirits still remain. When you visit The Horse You Came In On Saloon, Baltimore, you may just spot one of the the most famous ghosts in Maryland. This old saloon was the last known stopping place of Edgar Allan Poe before his death. Objects in the saloon have been known to move on their own, and some believe it’s no other than the ghost of Poe himself. While you are in Baltimore, head over to Fort McHenry. Once used as a prison for Confederate soldiers and then a hospital for the wounded, many men perished at this fort. Echoing footsteps, full-body apparitions, and
unexplained cold spots are just a few of the things that visitors have experienced while exploring this historic structure. On Fletchertown Road, near Bowie, there’s a local urban legend known as the Goatman. Once a mad scientist who turned himself into a half-man, half-goat, he now wanders the area of Fletchertown Road hungry for blood. Of all the scary places in Maryland, the Dr. Samuel A. Mud House in Waldorf is the most bone-chilling. John Wilkes Booth took refuge here after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. Today, eerie happenings happen inside the home including phantom footsteps, flickering lights, and a human-shaped imprint on the upstairs bed.

Go, Do, See:
Haunted Michigan
Here are some of the most terrifying places in Michigan that are said to have disturbing, spooky pasts. The trip only takes about 6 and a half hours to complete, which is perfect for an extended weekend getaway. Many of these places are haunted hotels. So, you can always stop off and experience the truly freaky atmosphere of a haunted place overnight… that is, if you dare. In its heyday, the Kalamazoo Sanitarium, also known as the Southwest Michigan Tuberculosis Sanitarium, was considered a state-of-the-art facility for treating patients suffering from TB. As the deadly threat of tuberculosis subsided in the 1960s, the place became the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital. To this day, neighbors of this building are said to hear the wailing of souls of those who
spent their last years confined to the institution. Another former institute for treating tuberculosis patients, the Michigan State Ssantitarium opened in 1907. Like the Kalamazoo facility, it also switched to treating the mentally disabled, changed hands a couple of times, and then was shuttered for good in 1982. Years later, the property was torn down to make way for upscale housing; however, the area was said to be haunted. Northville Hospital opened in 1952 and was considered one of the finest facilities in country for treating psychiatric patients. But that reputation did not last, as reports became public decades later that patients were forced to sleep in hallways, were left with nothing to do but chain smoke and watch television all day, and were even subjected to attacks by staff members and other patients. The facility now
sits derelict and subject to trespassers, curious to see this haunting place. WAYNE - Back in the ‘80s, a man was shot at the Red Apple Restaurant and Inn by a waitress who was angered by a lousy tip. The man’s ghost is said to linger in Room 117, pulling pranks like hiding the TV remote, shrinking shampoo bottles, and moving the complimentary Bible around. Two apparitions are said to dwell in the Inn on Ferry Street, in Detroit. One, a woman clothed in a wedding dress, is said to walk the halls of the Roehn House. The other is the ghost of a man, who is rumored to grab your arm if you stay in room 4102 of the Owen House.

Go, See, Do: Anyone craving authentic ghost stories for an extended weekend getaway can find them at several historic sites accross Minnesota. From eerie fog to aggressive spirits, paranormal activities may trigger deeper chills than simple fear creeping up your spine. Here’s a look at a few of Minnesota’s most haunted haunts: PIPESTONE - As the home of Pipestone National Monument, this town’s origins reach back to ancient civilizations, which would trade hand-quarried red stone across the continent to be carved as sacred pipes. Visitors can spot gargoyle-like faces carved into downtown’s pink quartzite buildings and stay at the 1888 Calumet Inn, where a guest who died in a 1944 Valentine’s Day fire reportedly still haunts his room. Summer ghost walks include stories of footsteps, flickering lights, sudden drops in temperature at various buildings, and reports of children’s voices still heard in a former Indian boarding school building. Anyone craving more stories and ghost hunts can return for the annual Pipestone Paranormal Weekend October 11 & 12. Scheduled events include: Calumet by Candlelight & Bedtime Stories, Historic Cemetery Tour, Tintype Photography, Psychic Gallery Reading by psychic Susie Otto, “Tales from the Grave” cemetery tour, and Ghost Hunt. Reservations are required. All events are ticketed separately.

It’s reportedly haunted by the ghosts of residents who hung themselves in despair and a man who was hung on purpose as punishment, but had to be hung twice when the first attempt was botched, said Adrian Lee, author of Mysterious Minnesota: Digging Up the Ghostly Past at 13 Haunted Sites.

The museum is open thru Oct. 31, and will host a Mysterious Minnesota discussion and book signing with the author Nov. 1. ST. JAMES HOTEL, RED WING - Its resident ghost, former hotel owner Clara Lillyblad from 1932 to 1972, reportedly lingers on the third floor where she lived in room 310. She makes sure cutlery and napkins are correctly placed for diners. It also became a makeshift morgue when 98 passengers drowned after the Sea Wing paddle-wheeler capsized. Those victims are among the spirits that looks like fog rolling across the basement.

Dunleith Historic Inn
NATCHEZ - This National Historic Landmark was constructed in the late 1800s, and has had some strange occurrences take place. Usually, hearing a musical instrument being played live is a real treat, but after staying at the Dunleith Historic Inn you’ll probably feel differently. Patrons at the inn have reported hearing a harp being played‌by a female apparition. Set in a landmark 1856 Greek Revival mansion on 40-acre grounds, this upscale hotel with annexes is a mile from the Natchez National Historical Park. Featuring antique 4-poster beds and high ceilings, the refined rooms offer gas fireplaces, Wi-Fi access and marble bathrooms, some with clawfoot tubs. Stylish annex rooms have exposed wood-beam ceilings; some have sleeping lofts and/or patios. An elegant 3-bedroom cottage in
a restored 18th-century dairy barn features a full kitchen and a living room. The 1957 film, Raintree County was partly filmed at Dunleith, as was a portion of the 1974 version of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn by Columbia Pictures, and an episode of Promised Land for CBS television in 1998. This property has since benn foreclosed upon due to a bankruptcy default. Reports show a potential movie producer intended to purchase it this past summer. However, the deal fell through and the bank is resuming efforts to sell Dunleith to others.

Savage Haunted House
WARRENSBURG - What began as a simple Halloween party in 2007 has become a bone fide haunted house attraction. Troy and Marty Savage own and operate The Savage Haunted House. Each year items were added including a cemetery, corn mazerations inside his home enlisting family members to help with nend a mad scientist. The experience grew and became more terrifying. In 2014 Troy used his pole barn for new scenes. Here was born the butcher and Little Dead Riding Hood. His guests ventured into the dark pole barn unknowing of what they were about to experience. Troy’s guests were thrilled. Another guest favorite was the Cemetery of Lost Souls. Troy continues to display his Cemetery of Lost Souls with more visual effects of fog machines and motion activated characters that scream to life when someone gets close. The next year, the pole barn was converted to a maze with multiple gnarly scenes which received much enthusiasm from his guests. Troy always managed to
upgrade each year. An additional 1200 sq ft of haunted house has been added onto the front of the pole barn. The exterior looks like a daunting old castle with a tower that houses a giant Reaper overlooking it’s victims as they enter. The maze theme was continued with the addition to ensure guests would be disoriented throughout the whole destination. Due to growing popularity, The Savage Haunted House opened in 2017 for public viewing. “Opening to the public was a big deal. This is something that I’ve put a lot of time and resources into and I was very worried that it wouldn’t be received by the public very well,” said Troy. But with positive feedback and encouragement from friends and family, it happened. The response was overwhelming. “We quickly gained many volunteers with great imaginations who developed their own characters. In 2018 I consulted with a veteran actor of the major haunted houses in Kansas City for advice

Haunted Montana Trip Places to Go:
Montana happens to be full of haunted places, from our oldest mansions and hotels to our deserted mining towns. This road trip will take you to some of the most haunted places in Montana, so you just might have a real-life paranormal experience to talk about this Halloween. Stop off along the way and spend a night or two in a new town, bring a tent and camp out in nearby campgrounds, make an extended weekend getaway out of it!
Lobby Cafe
GREAT FALLS - Montana’s most haunted building. The Lobby Cafe, or Lobby Bar, once had a hotel above it which was often used by vagrants. Some of them died there, and now the building is reportedly haunted by at least 12 spirits. The Lobby Bar has been the focus of many paranormal investigations, and a lot of patrons report strange activity regularly. Open at 10 a.m., stop in the morning and ask the manager, Tara, about her ghostly encounters.
Garnet Ghost Town
GARNET - The home of many gold miners and their families in the late 1800s, and while no one lives there now, some say that a few souls from the past remain. People have heard ghostly fingers playing the piano late at night, and in the winter, you might see footprints in the snow leading into a building but not out of it.
Mai Wah Society, Butte
BUTTE - This is one of the most haunted cities in Montana, with paranormal activity being reported at quite a few places. The Mai Wah Society is a museum that pays homage to all the city’s thriving Chinese community from the 1930s. People have seen a dark apparition staring down into the street from the building’s upper floors, and an evil spirit likes to attack people and try to push them down the stairs.
Dumas Brothel Museum
BUTTE - Haunted or not, the Dumas Brothel Museum is a fascinating place to explore. But the numerous reports of paranormal activity make it difficult to deny that some
ladies from the past didn’t get the memo about the brothel being closed for business. There are dozens of stories of spooky encounters and ghost sightings here, and sometimes they even show up in photos. Mount Moriah Cemetery BUTTE - If you can make it to the Mount Moriah Cemetery before dark, you might spot the wheelchair-bound spirit many have seen. The first known witnesses were two police officers in the 1970s. They were patrolling the property one night when they both saw someone in a wheelchair pass through the locked gates of the cemetery. They even ran to the gate to see if help was needed. The wheelchair-bound spirit disappeared, and no wheelchair tracks were found in the snow.
Boulder Hot Springs
Spend the night here, but don’t expect to get much sleep. Some say the property is haunted by the ghost of Simone, a prostitute who was murdered by a mining executive. Strange male voices have also been heard in empty rooms.

New Hampshire State Hospital, Concord Take a road trip that will lead you to some of the scariest places in New Hampshire. Starting at the Gibson Road Cemetery on Gilson Road and Tanglewood Drive in Nashua, visitors have reported strange sensations. Some say they were being pushed backwards while othes reported it felt like they were walking through water. Some have seen an eerie hooded figure. Next on the list is the University of New Hampshire. A number of buildings on UNH’s campus have been reported to be haunted, including Smith Hall and Thompson Hall. Laconia’s historic Colonial Theatre is currently being completely redone and transformed into a

community auditorium - but will the revitalization end the haunting that visitors and staff have long reported? Time will tell. Originally built in 1842, the New Hampshire state hospital in Concord treated the mentally ill for many years. Though an excellent modern psychiatric hospital has been built practically next to the old state hospital to replace it, the abandoned buildings still stand. Those who venture into and around them report strange noises and the sense that they are being followed. This bone-chilling place of The Ocean Born Mary House, in Henniker, is home to one of the most terrifying ghosts in New Hampshire. According to legend, Ocean Born Mary was born at sea on a ship coming from Ireland that was captured by pirates. The pirate captain agreed to spare the

ship and those aboard it if the baby’s mother would name the child after his mother, Mary - and gave the child’s mother a bolt of brocade to use to make baby Mary’s wedding gown one day. According to legend, the pirate captain came to New Hampshire many years later when Mary was widowed, and she cared for him in his old age. Supposedly he buried his treasure in Mary’s son Robert’s house in Henniker, and she still haunts the building to protect it. This historic house of Amos J. Blake, located in Fitzdwilliam, has been featured on the show “Ghost Hunters,” which found a number of signs of haunting. It’s open to the public, so tour it if you dare!

Along Clinton Road
Clinton Road is located in West Milford, Passaic County, New Jersey. It runs in a generally north-south direction, beginning at Route 23 near Newfoundland and running roughly 10 miles (16 km) to its northern terminus at Upper Greenwood Lake. The road and the land around it have gained notoriety over the years as an area rife with many legends of paranormal occurrences such as sightings of ghosts, strange creatures, and gatherings of witches, Satanists, and the Ku Klux Klan. It is also rumored that professional killers dispose of bodies in the surround-
ing woods—with one recorded case of this occurring. It has been a regular subject of discussion in Weird NJ magazine, which once devoted an entire issue to it. In the words of a local police chief, “It’s a long, desolate stretch and makes the imagination go nuts.” There are very few houses along the road and much of the adjoining property is undeveloped publicly owned woodlands (either City of Newark watershed or state forest) and the road itself is a narrow two-lane highway that receives little maintenance, is not part of New Jersey’s county route system and was until
fairly recently unpaved for some of its length, connecting two areas of minimal population and growth and thus having little traffic even at the busiest times of day. It is also notorious for having the country’s longest traffic light wait. This occurs at a double intersection where Route 23 crosses the road. The two lights can cause motorists to wait for 5 minutes in total. The lengthy wait was a result of traffic planners giving increased priority to Route 23 to reduce backups during rush hour.

Haunted Hideaways The Fort Totten historic site has been through quite a wild history. As the name would suggest, it was originally a military post built in the late 1800s with various buildings and living quarters. It later became an Indian boarding school and, very briefly, a tuberculosis preventorium. There have been many accounts of ghostly encounters at Fort Totten that has given it the reputation of being one of the most haunted places in the state.
BISMARK - The state library is located on the capitol grounds and is in the Liberty Memorial Building. According to legend, a “stacks monster” had haunted the shelves of books for years. It was known to cast creepy shadows from unknown sources, walk through the library with audible footsteps, and even disembodied voices were heard occasionally.
Sims is a tiny town that is mostly forgotten to time these days. All that’s really left is this abandoned brick home, some dirt roads, unusable bridges, a cemetery, and an old yet charming church and parsonage. Not only will this area give you the kind of chills associated with being somewhere abandoned, but it’s got a
paranormal past, too. The parsonage has long been considered haunted by a women who once lived there, sometimes referred to as the “Gray Lady.” According to old news reports, people who took residence in the parsonage were often scared out by the ghost and wouldn’t last long there before choosing to leave.

It is also known for its ties to Edgar Allen Poe and poet Sarah Whitman. The two were frequent visitors of the library and it’s said the ghost of Poe himself haunts the top floor.
Governor Sprague Mansion
CRANSTON - A stunning mansion and museum. Not only was it the birthplace of two Rhode Island governors, it also has an extensive and at times turbulent past. The mansion is said to be haunted by a former resident after his mysterious murder in
the 1800s. Everything from actual ghost sightings to objects moving on their own have been reported.
Belcourt Castle
NEWPORT - It is said that the collection of worldly art and artifacts the former owners of the residence brought in to the house are possessed. The amount of paranormal activity at this century-old estate makes it one of Rhode Island’s spookiest destinations. If you’re feeling brave enough, the house offers tours of the haunted rooms and worldly antiques.

Haunted South Dakota
Let’s go on an extended weekend getaway with the ghosts. They are all through South Dakota and take more than a day to experience all of them. A good place to start is on the Southwest corner near Vermillion where a Spirit Mound lies. Spirit Mound’s hauntings go back way before white men found this place. The Sioux tribe believed that strange, short men with misshapen heads haunted the area. In Yankton, Mount Marty College is reported to be full of ghosts. The school was established in 1936, and many think it’s haunted by several folks who died on campus throughout the years. Ghosts include a construction worker who turns lights on and off, a nun, music teacher and young student. Exploring a castle is always fun, especially when it is said to be haunted. The Easton Castle in Aberdeen is such a place. This lovely Victorian home was built in 1888, and is said to be haunted by a young woman named Leslie Gage, who was supposedly the inspiration for Dorothy in L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz. The present owners insist that the hauntings are just rumors, but the home’s secluded location and somewhat intimidating exterior definitely add to its intrigue. It is open for tours and a campground on the site invites visitors to stay overnight. The most haunted town in the Mount Rushmore State is hands down Deadwood, which is the location of some of the most popular South Dakota ghost stories. What makes it so haunted? It is thanks to the ghosts of the town’s first sheriff (who can still be seen roaming around the Historic Bullock Hotel). This hotel has such a history of hauntings that its website readily admits that the second and third floor hallways are just teeming with ghosts. Seth Bullock himself has been spotted on numerous occasions. The Historic Homestake Opera House in Lead was built in 1914. Plenty of stories surround this beautiful building - including people hearing voices and actually seeing ghosts. Another hotel, located in Rapid City, is the Hotel Alex Johnson which apparently has several ghosts, including that of Mr. Johnson himself. The Lady in White was supposedly a young bride who threw
herself out the window of room 812 during the 1970s. She wanders the halls of the eighth floor. Mr. Johnson died in 1938, but still keeps an eye on the place, and a young girl on the eighth floor plays pranks on guests. On December 29, 1890, the Wounded Knee Massacre was committed by the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. Soldiers killed more than 300 men, women and children. Today, visitors report hearing moans on the site, and sobbing of women and children.

The Donkey Lady

aid to be the home of a paranormal presence known as the Donkey Lady, a legendary bridge in San Antonio has been included in a viral haunted road trip through Texas, which includes this infamous stop. It’s been recognized as one of the most haunted spots in the Lone Star State and, at the very least, is one of the more terrifying urban legends of San Antonio. Whether she’s a ghost or a creature, the donkey lady story is scary. Several stories detail how the donkey lady came to be and how she became part donkey, part human. As the story goes, a farming family living outside the city and was said to have met an end that was described as evil at its utmost. The farmer burned his home, left his

wife brutally disfigured, and murdered their children. According to the tale, the wife’s fingers were melted down until there were only stumps remaining, which created appendages deemed hoof-like in appearance. Her face had charred, with the skin so badly damaged that it gave it an elongated appearance that some claimed was donkey-like. Said to still be grieving her husband’s gruesome acts and the terrible loss of their children, the Donkey Lady is still said to haunt Elm Creek and torment all those who make an attempt to cross the bridge. She roams the area surrounding the bridge in south San Antonio nightly, crying for her children. She will routinely chase off anybody who bothers her by honking. Honking a cars horn is supposedly the best way to get the attention of this beastly donkey lady.

Haunted Salt Lake
T
he Rio Grande Depot in Salt Lake City is most certainly haunted by several spirits, but the most famous is the Purple Lady. This beautiful woman is wearing a dark purple hat and dress from the early 1900s and is seen in the women’s bathroom and balcony area. She apparently was killed at the depot when she and her fiance got into a fight. He threw her ring down onto the tracks, and she was hit and killed by an oncoming train as she ran down to retrieve it. The Salt Lake City Cemetery is so old, that it’s had plenty of time to collect unhappy spirits who’ve failed to move on to the afterlife. “Emo” will appear to you if you light a candle, circle his crypt three times and then peer into it. The ghost of a small child has been seen here, and is sometimes heard sobbing late at night. Fort Douglas was the site of several suicides and murders in its early years from 1896 to 1901. Some of those spirits may haunt the cemetery and fort museum today. One ghost most often seen is the one nicknamed, “Clem,” who is a short, stocky man with a beard, wearing a Civil War-era uniform. He seems happy enough, but tends to startle museum staff when he shows up unexpectedly.
If you’ve ever visited This Is The Place Monument, you’ve seen Brigham Young’s distinctive pink farmhouse. It’s said to be haunted by several spirits, including two of Brigham’s wives - Ann Eliza Webb and Lucy Ann Decker. Ann was not a happy polygamist (in fact, she later left the church and wrote a scathing memoir about her experience). She particularly hated the noise that the children made running around the porch. She shows up in one of the upper bedrooms. Lucy is supposedly a kindly spirit who is often witnessed in the kitchen during tours. Staff and visitors have also claimed to see Brigham Young himself at the house. There are plenty of real Utah ghost stories worth entertaining, but perhaps the most famous story of them all involves one of the very first gravediggers in Salt Lake City. Jean Baptiste was an ordinary man with an ordinary job and an ordinary life. However, in 1862, authorities began to question why Baptiste made out remarkably well for a gravedigger. Turns out, Baptiste has robbed the graves of over 300 people, collecting their clothing and possessions to keep or sell for profit. It is said that Baptiste’s ghost still roams the coast of the Great Salt Lake carrying his stolen possessions in his arms.

Things to Do:
Find the Ghosts
Vermont has a rich history of hauntings that could make even the most hardened skeptic rethink their stance on the paranormal! Norwich University has a number of different ghost stories attached to it involving four different halls on campus. First of all, there is a legend that there is a boarded up dorm room in Alumni Hall where a student is said to have hanged himself. Several years later, the boy’s brother came to the school and was somehow allocated the same room. He also hanged himself which is why the room is now boarded up. Students say that you can hear strange noises coming from inside. At Chaplin Hall there is said to be a ghost to hangs around at the front door. In the past, the hall was used as a library and there were regular reports of books floating off of the shelves! The other two haunted halls on campus are Ransom Hall and Hawkins Hall which have similar events occurring inside. Many students have said that they have awoken in the middle of the night screaming and unable to move or breathe as though something is holding them down. It is not just the halls that are haunted. There are also reports of a female ghost at Sabine Field who apparently guards the gate to the football field!
