Step back in time at special event Blast from the past: Families expected to flock to historic site for Back to Hartley on October 30 onvict lashings and historic re-enactors will mingle with 21st century lasers at the annual Back to Hartley event at Hartley Historic Site on October 30.

To be held on All Hallows Eve, the family-friendly Back to Hartley event is an opportunity for locals and visitors to the area to explore one of the finest examples of colonial buildings at Hartley Historic Site and experience the beauty of the surrounds.

It will also wrap up a weekend of Halloween celebrations in Lithgow, which include Vivid-style lighting displays, spooky decorations, themed precincts along Main Street, community Trick or Treat activity for children and a Michael Jackson Thriller dance-off on the Saturday.

The event will also showcase a variety of arts, crafts, regional produce and vintage cars and motorbikes. There will be refreshments for sale, sheep shearing and face painting, trike and pony rides and a petting zoo for children.

Back to Hartley will be held at Hartley Historic Site, Old Bathurst Road (just off Great Western Highway), Hartley, from 9am to 4pm on Sunday, October 30.

Julie McCrossin to host film night

Rebecca didn’t pull any punches, always willing to give her view, even if it didn’t sit alongside popular opinion.

She was a journalist who had courage, and by all reports she fought breast cancer with an enormous amount of that courage, albeit privately. At 54, she was simply way too young to lose her life.

But it was more than enough time to leave a mark on her chosen profession and a legacy that will live on forever in the halls of News Limited.

The Saturday paper will never quite be the same, and I’ll miss her banter with Alan Jones on 2GB on a Friday morning.

Not everybody loved her, but she wouldn’t have been doing her job if they did. Sports journalism has lost a giant.

Council considering function centre Weddings by the river likely as Development Application is lodged for overhaul of iconic location DALE DRINKWATER

eddings on the banks of the iconic Nepean River could soon be a reality, with a brand new riverfront function centre proposed for Emu Hall.

Emu Hall was built in 1852 by a vibrant local character, Tobias Ryan, a jack-of-alltrades who ended up representing Nepean in the Legislative Assembly.

The Emu Plains location is now owned by local Paul McDonald, who bought the site in February 2015 and became its fourth owner in its 164-year history.

Its potential was too endless to ignore for Mr McDonald, who immediately saw it as a place where people can come together and celebrate special events.

“The location is pretty obvious for something great on the river,” he said.

“Penrith Council have indicated they wanted to do something with River Road and Regatta Park, and the Green Bridge is going right next to us at Punt Road, so there is a lot of opportunity for people to show interest in this part of the world.”

An artist’s impression of the future function centre at Emu Hall, Emu Plains up to 260 people, while protecting the existing building’s heritage.

The Development Application for the refurbishment of Emu Hall was lodged to Council on September 23 by Stimson and Baker Planning, and is under assessment.

It proposes a commercial kitchen to cater for both a newly built riverfront function

hall, plus the existing heritage building that will be available to be booked as a restaurant for private functions.

Warwick Stimson said the objective is to use the existing heritage item’s characteristics and setting to produce a high quality function venue on the Nepean River.

“The restaurant will be a fantastic addi-

tion to emerging uses along the river, and the function centre will be a welcome option for venues in Penrith, particularly overlooking the river,” he said.

Mr Stimson said the proposal is consistent with the Regatta Park Plan of Management and land uses identified in Council’s ‘Our River Master Plan’.

Greater support for students with learning difficulties

Hikers find dead body in Glenbrook National Park

About 5.30pm on Sunday, October 2, two hikers found the body of a deceased man near a creek while bushwalking in part of the National Park in Glenbrook.

Emergency services trekked to the location and a crime scene was established.

The body was airlifted out of the bush on Monday morning.

Further investigations are now being carried out at a morgue in Glebe with Springwood detectives assisting with enquiries.

new educational tool is now available for Western Sydney teachers to help them support students with learning difficulties.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, said last week the new guide ‘Understanding Learning Difficulties’ will give teachers practical advice on how to identify and support the estimated five per cent of students who face challenges in the way they learn.

“The new guide focuses on specific learning difficulties in dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (written expression) and dyscalculia (mathematics),” Ms Payne said.

“It’s clear how important the guide is, given that estimates suggest four out of five students with a developmental learning disability have dyslexia.”

The new resource comes after the Government’s latest budget commitment of $118.2 million over 2016 and 2017 was announced for young people with a disability.

This funding means that a total of $5.3 billion will be invested from 2014 to 2017 for students with a disability.

Police investigating following Hazelbrook house blaze

Police are investigating following a house fire in Hazelbrook on Monday, October 3.

At around 1.30pm emergency services received a number of calls that a house on Bonnie View Avenue, Hazelbrook, was well alight.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze at around 3pm, but the house sustained significant damage.

The fire spread to one of the neighbouring properties which sustained minor damages.

It is understood that the male owner of the house, who was at home at the time of the fire, is not insured.

Police seeking help to recover stolen Winmalee dirt bike

Between 6pm Thursday, September 22 and 4am Friday, September 23 an

unknown person or persons have broken into a shed on a residential property on Shelton Street, Winmalee.

A 2005 KTM 50cc dirt bike was taken from the scene, with engine number 0545215251.

Police are advising that if anyone is approached by a person who is selling the dirt bike to please report it as soon as possible.

Forensics conducted to find Blaxland storage facility thief

Between 2.30am and 3.30am on Thursday, September 22 an unknown person entered a storage facility on Attunga Road, Blaxland and broke into a number of storage units, taking a number of items.

CCTV shows footage of a male committing the offence and leaving the scene with two large bags.

Forensics has been conducted and police are awaiting the results.

About 11.30pm on Saturday, September 24 police responded to a call advising them that a front door was wide open at a house on Mt Piddington Road, Mt Victoria.

Police conducted a search at the home and found a number of items left on the front door step. Police are still yet to confirm if any items were actually stolen.

Blackheath artist to leave town Painter of the infamous naked lady mural puts her house up for sale ERIN MAMO

irgette Hansen, the owner of the infamous mural home at Blackheath, is leaving town.

The artist, who made headlines when she painted a naked lady in a mural on the side of her home, has decided to move back to Newcastle after 18 years.

“I will miss the beauty of the Mountains and my home, but I’ve done this before,” Ms Hansen said.

“I’m making the move to be with my family and to re-establish my art in Newcastle.”

The artist became well known in 2001 after she painted the extensive mural that is still on display today on the side of her home on the Great Western Highway.

“A Council ranger tried to get me to cover the naked lady with a tea towel,” Ms Hansen recalls.

“It was a big deal at the time, I received so many letters telling me that I should remove the artwork.”

Fifteen years later and the mural has been accepted into the community, and with the home going on the property market today, Ms Hansen has recently re-painted it to freshen it up for the new owners.

Ms Hansen has recently repainted the controversial mural in preparation for sale and I have re-painted it as a gift to the community and the creative people that will buy the home,” she said.

“I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but hopefully whoever buys it falls in love with it.”

The quirky home has an impressive veggie patch and a large shed that Ms Hansen used for teaching art classes.

Inside, there are two ceilings handpainted with flowers, a bathroom that has hand-painted tiles on the walls and stained glass windows in the two front

rooms of the house.

Ms Hansen has spent the last eight months improving the interior of the home, including painting all the walls and the floors herself.

Before she says her final goodbyes at the end of the month, Ms Hansen will be holding an art sale from Thursday, October 13 to Sunday, October 16.

Murals up for purchase will range in price from $50 to $2500.

The house at 83 Great Western Highway will be open for inspection this Saturday.

Springwood driver convicted A Springwood man caught drink driving has been ordered off the road for nine months.

Andrew Patrick Stoner fronted Penrith Local Court late last month charged with high-range drink driving.

The court heard the builder’s labourer had been at a local hotel and was half way home when he was detected travelling without headlights on.

Magistrate Stephen Corry noted the defendant’s “drinking is a worry”, but said the fact he had some insight into his problem was promising.

“When you drive a motor vehicle with that much alcohol in your system you’re a risk to people, albeit the short distance,” Magistrate Corry said.

“At least you’re honest...about the fact you need some help,” he added.

He was convicted, fined $800, and ordered to fit an interlock device to his car for 48 months at the completion of his disqualification.

He was also handed a 12-month good behaviour bond with the condition he accept Community Corrections supervision.

Youth congress delivers the goods Local youth councillors brainstorm innovative ideas in a bid to win a slice of a $6000 grant funding pie ERIN MAMO

ocal youths recently came together to discuss ways they could improve the Blue Mountains environmentally and socially.

As part of the Blue Mountains City Council initiative, Project NOW, 50 youths from the area enjoyed a three-day youth congress full of activities and brainstorming.

The overall task was to work in teams to develop and pitch their own community development ideas to community stakeholders and potentially win a slice of $6000 of grant funding.

Mayor of the Blue Mountains, Mark Greenhill, praised the participants.

“The contribution of our young people is inspirational and I congratulate each of the participants on their initiative and leadership skills,” Cr Greenhill said.

Most of the participants are still in school so they took this opportunity on board while on school holidays.

Over the three days, teams worked to develop six ideas that were then presented and judged by educational, financial, environmental and social service stakeholders and Council.

First place and $2000 worth of funding went to the group Refugee Youth Connect, whose idea looked at connecting young locals with young refugees and asylum seekers when they first come to Australia.

In second place was Youth Summit with their idea to start a radio program, for and by young people, earning them $2,000 worth of funding.

Two teams took out third place, Food Forest and One Week Planet, and were both given $1000 worth of funding.

Blue Mountains Youth Councillor, Aleksandrs Titovs, who worked with the youths during the congress, said their achievements were commendable.

“The Congress achieved its aim of encouraging young people to lead ecological and social innovation,” Mr Titovs said.

“I look forward to seeing the progress of these projects firsthand in 2017.”

The initiative is supported by a grant from the NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities Program which is managed by the Department of Family and Community Services.

The program provides one-off grants to local councils for youth-led and youthdriven community projects that have a positive youth development focus.

Tasty treats dished up for foodies this month ERIN MAMO

ood Food Month is on again this October in the Blue Mountains.

From Glenbrook to Hartley and even into the Megalong, 20 venues across the region are currently taking part in offering up unique food experiences to the public, with an emphasis on local produce, paired with regional wine and beer.

The event is run by The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide with the help of Plate Up Blue Mountains, which is a food and wine advisory group established to drive the Blue Mountains as a food and wine destination.

Plate Up’s Chair, Pam Seaborn, said the month-long celebration showcases what is most exciting about our world-class food and wine scene.

“Good Food Month encourages the best Blue Mountains venues, restaurants, cafes, bars and producers to showcase what they do best,” Ms Seaborn said.

“There will be no shortage of opportunities for locals and visitors to experience our regional food and vibrant culinary scene.

“It could be lunch at a vineyard, a quirky high tea, or you may prefer a gourmet burger or dessert plate to share.”

Leura Garage, a hip and happening eatery that was once a mechanical garage, is one of the venues dishing up some culinary delights this month.

Owner, James Howarth, said the garage offers customers a unique dining experience, where the staff pride themselves on slow food served fast.

“We’ve got an interesting fit-out here, there are lots of things for people to look at while they are eating,” Mr Howarth said.

Visitors to the garage during Good Food Month will be treated to its spring tasting menu, which includes things like a grissini seasoned pizza with dips, a beetroot and bocconcini salad and a 12-hour slow cooked lamb shoulder with a pomegranate glaze.

Other venues taking part in Good Food Month are Glenbrook’s Restaurant 2773, Katoomba’s Gingerbread House and Darley’s Restaurant at Lilianfels Resort & Spa, The Lookout at Echo Point as well as The Old City Bank Brasserie at The Carrington Hotel, Vesta Bar & Bistro, Blackheath and Dryridge Estate Wines in the Megalong Valley.

The CSIRO Healthy Diet Score has surveyed more than 86,000 people in the last 18 months and the results aren’t great.

The survey – which assessed the eating habits of everyday Aussies against the Australian Dietary Guidelines – revealed an average participant score of just 59/100, otherwise referred to as a ‘C’ grade.

So what is it about the way we eat that’s letting us down?

These include high-energy nutrient-void foods like lollies, chips and cakes. These foods are classed as discretionary as they don’t provide any essential nutrients and are therefore not a necessary part of our diets.

On average, we are eating three serves a day of these foods at the expense of more nutritious options.

The CSIRO survey found

that our top choices are alcohol, chocolates and confectionery, cakes and biscuits and sugary beverages.

With a wide range of heavily processed, nutrient-void foods on our shelves, it’s clear we love our snacks.

With that in mind, how do we go about making positive changes and keeping the treats to a minimum?

Well, according to the CSIRO we should be focusing on “halving the bad and doubling the good”.

This is a strategy I’ve mentioned in this column previously. Often when we think of changing our diet we focus on cutting out foods, but what we need to do instead is to shift the focus to replacement rather than restriction.

For example, if you’re someone who is consuming three discretionary items a day, a good starting point is to swap one of those servings for some nuts, fruit or veggie sticks and hummus.

This way you’ve decreased the less nutritious foods in your diet, while boosting your fruit and veggie intake.

Basically you’re killing two birds with one stone.

It may seem like a simple change, but if you keep working at it you’re likely to maintain long term healthy eating habits.

in this inquiry, one of the banks was forced to refund an astounding $30 million charged for advice that was never, ever delivered. And this was just one instance of what turned out to be many similar occurrences.

Large financial institutions have their interests aligned with yours. Many clients assume that their financial advisor has their interests

aligned with those of the investor. But the reality, it seems, is that institutions are designed around the best interests of their shareholders and the company. Most advisors, up until recent legislation changes, had always advocated an asset accumulation approach, whose sole purpose was to maximise recurring fees rather than provide any client benefit.

You need to invest with a household name. We all know the big household names. You’ve seen the commercials and heard the pitches. And we’re inclined to believe that by having our money invested with these big ‘names’ that it is not only safer, but managed more appropriately. The reality, as we have learned, is that these institutions can act just as incompetently, dishonestly and as selfishly as any one person ‘show’ operating from the passenger seat of their car.

Thankfully, the ‘leopards’ are starting to change their spots, but only as a result of the heightened scrutiny they find themselves under.

My advice: always be fully involved with your investing decisions, and should something not seem quite right, don’t automatically accept it just because the bank said so.

I have been watching the government bank inquiry on TV with great interest.

I can certainly assure you that witnessing a Q&A with the CEOs of our big four banks could not be classed as even minutely entertaining, but it certainly shone a light on some of the more cavalier behaviours of their institutions.

“Then we have clarity, which refers to the natural inclusions in the stone. Almost all diamonds have some internal imperfections that can be seen only under magnification.”

Mr Ely explained that the fewer flaws a diamond has, the higher its clarity grade and the more valuable it is.

Then of course you can choose your carat weight and go as big as your budget allows you.

“The worth of a diamond is determined by all of the ‘Four Cs’.

Size alone does not determine value,” he said.

s all parents of school-aged children are aware, it is school holiday time – and the countdown back to school is likely to be on by now! These holidays I decided my 11-year-old was old enough to earn some pocket money doing some work in my business. It was a great experience for him (aside from the monetary reward). He was able to use computer skills he has learnt at school, he could see a tangible contribution to my business and he felt like a ‘big boy’ with the responsibilities he was given.

He also had the opportunity to learn from his mistakes: he missed a crucial step at one stage and had to re-do some work. He learnt the hard way how it feels to lose productivity, but he also didn’t make that same mistake again.

On my business Facebook page I asked whether others have done the same with their children and how successful it has been. One person responded that it gives her child a sense of commitment and feeling needed, which makes her feel good about doing it. She did also acknowledge that mistakes sometimes

occur, so it can be more about her child’s positive experience than it is useful for her business!

Another Facebook respondent has her child help out a couple of hours each week after school (which pays for her phone each month). She sees it as a great learning experience for children, and gives them the opportunity to watch their parents run a small business, which may in turn give them confidence to take initiative in their own work.

Many small business owners want to pass on the invaluable skills and experience they know can be learnt by working for yourself. Introducing your children to the variety of tasks that small business owners undertake can be an invaluable way of instilling a strong work ethic or fostering a budding entrepreneur.

Completing tasks in your business can be linked to pocket money – although I believe it is imperative children realise that everyone in a family also has jobs and responsibilities that they don’t get paid for.

hanging your business structure from sole trader or partnership to a company often takes getting used to. This is because the rules for companies are a lot more precise than for sole traders or partnerships. In addition there are changes to accounting procedures as well as implications that directors of companies need to know.

Firstly, sole traders and partnerships are not required to have a business bank account, although it certainly helps with recording transactions. Companies, however, are legally required to have a separate bank account. Accounting for companies is also a lot more costly and complex. Companies are required to have their accounts prepared according to the Australian Accounting standards.

Furthermore the accounts need to be audited on an annual basis. Finally, the annual accounts need to be lodged for review with the Australian Investments and Security Commission.

One advantage of companies is the limited liability that is granted to them.

If the business goes bankrupt, then only the assets of the business are at risk, and

shareholders will only lose the value of the shares they hold. However, they are last on the list when it comes to recovering any money. In addition if the shareholder is a director of the business, they are legally obliged to oversee the operations of the business and ensure that it is not trading whilst insolvent, and that all obligations to employees are being met. Failure to do so results in criminal proceedings and, if found guilty, fines or jail sentences will be applied. In such circumstances the personal assets of the directors are at risk of being sold to pay obligations to employees, and/or taxes and fines.

If you are operating through a Company you do not have the option of taking drawings. When you use a company you can only take cash out in the form of wages or dividends. If you are operating as a sole trader or in a partnership you do not have the option of being employed by the business. This is because at law a person cannot employ themselves. In this situation you are limited to taking drawings that will be taxed on the net profit of the business.

i n g e r- s o n g w r i t e r Oliver Downes is bringing his debut album ‘Ultraviolet’ to Katoomba for one night only.

On Sunday, October 16 the singer, who originally hails from the Blue Mountains, will perform a combined gig with acoustic quartet ‘Hinterlandt’ at Hotel Blue in Katoomba.

The musician, who describes his style as keyboard alternative pop, said he is very excited to share the new release of his album with some familiar faces.

“I lived in the Mountains before I moved to Melbourne so I’m excited to come back,” he said.

“People can expect extremely polished chamber pop on the night.”

Before moving to Melbourne Oliver was a regular on the pop and folk scene in Sydney.

In 2014 he released an extended play (EP) record titled ‘At the End’.

The EP was a success and pushed the artist to make the move to Victoria to chase his dream of releasing an album.

Oliver officially launched his new record in Melbourne last month after raising more than $9000 in a crowd funding campaign in 2015.

The funding allowed him to pay for the recording, mixing and mastering of his album as well as paying for various musicians to collaborate on it.

Now, Oliver is travelling around the country performing his music at various venues, including a Sydney gig at Django Bar in Marrickville on Thursday, October 20.

‘Ultraviolet’ is a rich blend of ballads and kinetic acoustic pop that Oliver recorded with the string group ‘String Contingent’.

“I basically made an all-acoustic pianodriven folk-pop record with a string trio and a metal drummer,” he said.

“I’ve also got guest contributions from Elana Stone, Brian Campeau and Shalane Connors.”

The event at Hotel Blue promises to be an intimate evening with soaring melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.

Hinterlandt will be playing music written by German born, Sydney-based composer Jochen Gutsch.

The quartet have performed all over the world and have released 12 albums in five countries.

Oliver will perform at 6.30pm and Hinterlandt at 7.45pm on Sunday, October 16.

Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door and are limited as the venue has intimate seating.

o mark the company’s 20th vintage, winemaker Peter Logan has released a very special 2016 Pinot Gris from his Logan Wines at Orange in NSW’s Central West.

Very special because firstly, this wine has an unusual orange hue from including the grape skins in the ferment, something that is normally only done with red wines. And secondly, because he’s named it Clementine after his little daughter with wife Hannah.

Peter says that including the skins in the ferment has given this Pinot Gris a fuller range of complex flavours than normal, including a tang on the palate and a crunchy finish from the tannins released into the wine from the skins.

“The flavours are more savoury than traditional Pinot Gris, and with the tannin cleaning the palate it makes for a great drop with a charcuterie board or cheese platter,” Peter adds.

One to note: New Zealand’s quirkily-named Squealing Pig has released its first ever Syrah (pictured) from the 2015 vintage in Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of the country’s North Island.

The country’s oldest wine region dating back to 1851, Hawke’s Bay enjoys plenty of sunny days, and a particularly warm 2015 vintage resulted in fruit with great concentrations of flavour and ripeness, and resultant wines of wonderful elegance.

Red berries and dark cherry fruit flavours, coupled with dusty tannins in this 2015 Squealing Pig Syrah, make it a great match alongside lamb loin chops topped with a fennel relish. RRP $26.

Rickard dominates again

other-of-two Heidi Rickard credits her 3am training sessions for winning her fourth consecutive Western Sydney Marathon earlier this

month.

The 42-year-old, who competes in numerous marathons and triathlons each year, was once again crowned female marathon champion at the annual Sydney International Regatta Centre-based event.

A record number of 1338 people took part in marathon, which featured four events including the 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km lap the lake, and 5km family fun run.

Speaking with the Record, the Blaxland resident admitted she was feeling rather anxious leading up to the October 1 race.

“I was asked to be an ambassador for the event and I must admit I felt a bit of pressure,” she said.

Rickard’s time of 3:10:08 was her second fastest time in the past four years. She defeated her nearest rival, Cory Newham, by more than four minutes.

Local Brendan Davies was crowned male champion for the second straight year, finishing in a time of 2:43:24.
