Planning for a brighter future Blue Mountains residents encouraged to have their say on ‘Draft Destination Management Plan’ ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains ‘Draft Destination Management Plan’ is currently on public exhibition, and Council is inviting the community to have their say.

The draft plan has been developed to grow and manage the visitor economy for the Blue Mountains and to provide solutions to challenges and provide opportunities to attract investment.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill believes the Blue Mountains is one of only a handful of leading international tourism brands within NSW, and the plan has been developed to support this.

“The Draft Destination Management Plan has been developed to guide the sustainable investment, marketing and promotion of the Blue Mountains region as a desirable destination and to support visitor demand,” Cr Greenhill said.

“An up-to-date plan is critical for the local tourism industry.

“It is one way that the Blue Mountains can future-proof its tourism product and help balance sustainable tourism and associated economic benefits such as local employment, with maintaining the local amenity for residents.

The Blue Mountains ‘Draft Destination Management Plan’ is currently on public exhibition “I encourage interested residents, businesses, community groups and tourism operators to take the time to read the draft and share your opinions and suggestions.”

The plan is an initiative of Blue Mountains City Council, with significant input from the local tourism industry, including Blue Mountains Accommodation and Tourism Association and relevant State

Government agencies.

Council must have a well-developed ‘Destination Management Plan’ to access future funding from State and Federal Government sources.

Council have called the plan aspirational and said it aims to set a best case scenario for tourism-related activities and the visitor economy in the Blue Mountains.

However, the opportunities for sustainable tourism activities identified in the draft are suggestions only and are subject to feasibility studies, investigation and planning approvals.

Flood plan “ridiculous” says Mayor Local community petitioning Council’s plan to make drastic changes to Glenbrook Park ERIN MAMO

lenbrook could see some major changes to its much-loved park, with 500-year-old trees demolished and a giant 1.2 metre high mound surrounding the vicinity of the sporting field as part of Council’s master plan.

The changes to the park have been proposed under Blue Mountains City Council’s ‘Glenbrook Park Plan of Management and Master Plan’, which was on public display from October 2016 to February 2017.

The 1.2 metre high mound, also known as a bund, has been proposed by Council as a flood mitigation measure, which the State Government requested to prevent the possibility of a flash flood happening over the next 100 years.

Local resident Robin Benton, who is part of the Glenbrook Reference Group that are protesting the changes to the park, said the bund would drastically change the availability of Glenbrook Park.

“The local park is used for a lot of purposes, various sporting activities and social events, and if a bund is constructed around the field it will reduce the size of the whole area,” he said.

In relation to the trees, Mr Benton

said Council’s tree plan states that they will remove a number of old trees that currently reside in the park.

“They are planning on getting rid of the

trees to make room for a car park for the new tourism centre, that will be built as part of the master plan,” he said.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the idea that there is going to be a flood in Glenbrook is “ridiculous”, and plans to have the bund removed from the current master plan.

“We live on a mountain ridge, it’s ridiculous to think that we need to plan for a one in 100-year flood,” he said.

“I’m confident that I can get the bund issue resolved and removed from Council plans.

“It is possible that there will be other flood mitigation plans implemented but not the bund.”

In terms of the trees, Cr Greenhill said he is concerned that historic trees could be removed for the purpose of a car park.

“I will be looking into this issue,” he said.

“I don’t want to see any trees removed in the park.”

Wentworth Falls: Cockatoos potentially poisoned At 8.30am on Tuesday, March 21, police attended a location in Kitchener Avenue, Wentworth Falls, after receiving a call about a dozen cockatoos that had possibly been poisoned.

Residents of the area located soggy bread and a number of dead cockatoos lying near the bread.

The birds were collected by Wires and taken to a nearby vet, with a sample of the bread.

RSPCA Inspectors and police attended the scene and noted that there were a number of cockatoos still in the trees that looked seriously ill.

Further investigations are being carried out by National Parks, Primary Industries and Blue Mountains City Council.

Katoomba: Bikes stolen from shipping container Between 6pm on Saturday, March 25 and 6am on Sunday, March 26, two motorcycles, a 2005 blue Yamaha and a 2013 white Yamaha, valued at $4,000 each were stolen from shipping containers in Megalong Street, Katoomba.

The thieves appear to have cut through a padlock to gain access to the shipping container and remove the bikes.

The Blue Mountains’ many towns and villages are full of character

ouncil want the Blue Mountains to be classified as an R6 residential character zone, to protect ‘town character’, they have re-

vealed.

Recently, Council wrote to the Greater Sydney Commission in support of introducing an R6 Residential Character zone for the region in response to the draft ‘West District Plan’, which has been developed for western Sydney’s changing future.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said overall the character of the Blue Mountains has not been appropriately addressed in the draft plan, which was recently on public display.

“The plan should acknowledge the particular character of our towns and villages that need to be protected,” he said.

“Our region has not been well represented in the priorities and actions.

“The description of ‘metro rural’ and the associated issues identified for such lands are not relevant to the Blue Mountains.”

As part of Council’s submission regarding the draft plan, an R6 zone in the Blue

Mountains has been acknowledged as a suitable tool that would set out standards about land uses and development controls.

Cr Greenhill said the current plan and ‘Towards Our Greater Sydney 2056’ – which is another one of the Greater Sydney Commissions plans – rely heavily on the successful and timely delivery and operation of the proposed Western Sydney Airport.

“Council is concerned at this reliance on one infrastructure project, which is currently unproven,” he said.

“There is a need for the plan to consider alternative economic futures for western Sydney, to ensure its future resilience.”

Council’s submission also states the significance of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is understated in the draft plan.

At its last meeting, Council endorsed its response to the draft plan, which outlines a 20-year vision for the region, which includes Penrith and Hawkesbury Local Government Areas.

wo talented dancers from Glenbrook Ballet Theatre will travel to New Zealand over Easter to compete in the prestigious Alana Haines Australasian Awards.

Locals Lara-Ann Kidman, 13 , and Kate Merrick, 15, will take part in the international competition, that takes place every two years, offering only 11 young ladies from all over the world the chance to receive scholarships and awards to further their careers in dancing.

Glenbrook Ballet Theatre Principal, Jessie Garbellini, said both students, who will spend the Easter long weekend in New Zealand, are now hard at work preparing for the event.

“It’s such an exciting opportunity for the girls, not just to be able to have the chance to present their own performances to an international jury, but also to be inspired by the talents of other young dancers that they are going to meet from all over the world,” she said.

In the competition, each of the teens, who are performing in the same ‘Supreme A’ category, will perform in an open ballet class and then present a classical solo and a contemporary solo.

Grant would boost Blackheath Blue Mountains City Council has applied for a grant of $1.4 million from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund to revitalise tourism and visitor infrastructure in the greater Blackheath area.

The fund was established by the Australian Government to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said it would be important funding if it comes to fruition.

“If successful, this grant funding provides a great opportunity to invest in tourism and visitor infrastructure to accommodate visitor demand and improve amenity for residents,” he said.

The grant application highlights three key projects: Blackheath town centre public domain including footpaths, tree planting, Wi-Fi hotspots, digital tourism information boards and more car parking spaces; extension of the popular Great Blue Mountains Trail from Blackheath to Mt Victoria; and an upgrade of Mt Blackheath including toilet facilities, lookouts, track surface and hang gliding infrastructure.

Council has a good track record in successfully securing similar grant funding including $3.592 million for the update of tourism infrastructure on the Southern Eastern Escarpment and $699,985 for the upgrade of Glenbrook Visitor Information Centre. Council will be advised of the outcome later in the year.

Kids ride for those less fortunate Community initiative aims to provide resources for school in Papua New Guinea ERIN MAMO

tudents from Blaxland and Winmalee High Schools have teamed up to raise money for schools in less fortunate countries.

As part of the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains’ ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ students took part in a bike ride or walk around the Penrith Lakes at the Sydney International Regatta Centre last Friday.

School teacher and Rotary member, Michael Harriden, who visited Cambodia a few years ago, said the ride was all about raising money and awareness.

“My son and I went to Cambodia in 2008 on holidays and saw the conditions the locals were living in,” Mr Harriden said.

“They asked us if we could help, so we did.”

In 2009, Mr Harriden and his son Greg started the first ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ and raised $8,000, which enabled them to build Samraong Public School in Cambodia.

Eight years on from the first ride and the not-for-profit has raised over $150,000, and built a second school in Cambodia and the Mando School, in Papua New Guinea.

Now, ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ wants to help Mt Sion, a school for blind children in Goroka,

Mr Harriden said projects like these aim to support the development of education in poorer nations.

“These events give our kids the opportunity to understand the educational needs of fellow students in nearby developing countries,” Mr Harriden said.

Prior to Friday’s event, the Rotary Club had raised $3000 and had almost 200

students registered to ride. ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ was held straight after school on the last day of term one.

And it is these large ‘crowds’ that always gets the attention of the media resulting in a great deal of coverage, usually highlighting the fortunes that are being made. We have all seen the stories on TV about the couple of suburban mums’ who have amassed a portfolio of 27 properties between school drop off and pickup

time. There are always plenty of these ‘off the shelf’ stories wheeled out in boom time, just like ‘the worst flu season ever’ at the beginning of winter.

But this time around we are also getting our share of pessimistic viewpoints being reported, particularly those of Phillip Lowe, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor. He has been widely quoted as having a great deal of concern as a result of lackadaisical bank lending coupled with inevitable future interest rate increases.

His apprehension is with property investors who he believes have not accounted for the risk factors associated with ‘long stay’ investments.

In fact last week’s ‘on hold’ interest rate decision by the RBA is widely credited as being a signal to investors that continual cheap finance is drawing to a close, because prevailing economic indicators did point strongly to a cut. So in one corner we have banks, property developers, real estate agents and the media, talking up the benefits of amassing a swag of ‘off the plan’ home units, whilst in the opposing corner we have the lone voice of the Governor of the RBA preaching caution and care.

I know which one I’d be listening too.

evin Mitchell’s music career has been a tale of two very distinct personalities.

In the 90s he made a name for himself as frontman for rock band Jebediah.

But in the 2000s Kevin decided to indulge his need for something new and with acoustic guitar in hand, Bob Evans was born.

Under the pseudonym, Kevin found

the musical freedom he needed to create beautiful folk-inspired tracks that never would have made it onto a Jebediah set list.

Almost two decades later and his musical alter ego has well and truly taken over.

“With Bob Evans I’m able to completely indulge my own personal interests and loves,” Kevin explained.

“To a certain extent I will probably always be recognised as the guy from Jebediah, but Bob Evans is where 90 per cent of my musical creativity goes these days.”

Kevin/Bob will be bringing that creative energy to Katoomba next month as part of his Lonesome Highways Tour.

The successful singer/songwriter will be accompanied on his tour by all-female support acts, a tradition that started almost five years ago.

“I don’t want my shows to be ‘sausage’ parties, I don’t want the person going on before me to just be another f**king dude playing guitar,” he laughed before launching into a discussion about feminism and being an effective ally.

“It’s just really important to me that there’s gender balance on the stage, for me and for the audience as well,” he said.

“It’s only a very small thing but I feel like it’s one small thing that I can do to help promote female voices because I don’t think they’re being heard enough.”

With record sales and streaming service revenue making up a minuscule part of the income of local artists, it’s these tours that help keep musicians like Kevin afloat.

“If you want to support me as an artist buy a ticket to my show and buy a piece of merchandise,” he said.

As for whether Jebediah fans will get their ears on new music anytime soon, Kevin is clear that for now he only has eyes for one man.

“At the moment it’s all Bob,” he said.

How to tackle digestive issues or annoying food intolerances Too often we put up with digestive problems without going through the proper channels to find out what’s going on...

Food can help keep our bodies healthy, but it can also cause some pretty nasty symptoms in those with food intolerances or digestive issues.

So what’s the best plan of attack when food is no longer your friend?

Don’t self diagnose If you think you may be suffering from a food intolerance or digestive issue it’s important to start with a visit to your GP. Many symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea can be caused by more serious medical issues, so it’s important to rule those out first.

Your GP can also refer you for tests to check for conditions like coeliac disease, chron’s disease and colitis.

Keep a food and symptom diary It’s hard to keep track of everything you eat and how you feel throughout the day so consider keeping a diary.

Making note of everything you eat and any symptoms you experience can help to identify which foods may be contributing to your symptoms.

Speak to a dietitian While it’s tempting to Google nutri-

tion advice the best approach is to get a referral to see an Accredited Practicing Dietitian.

Dietitians are experts in nutrition and will help guide you through the process to help manage symptoms while still getting all the nutrients your body needs.

Try low FODMAP There’s a family of carbohydrates called FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols) that have been identified as potential triggers for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

A low FODMAP diet consists of an elimination period (approx. six to eight weeks) where all medium and high

FODMAP foods are avoided, followed by a reintroduction phase where foods are added back to the diet one by one to identify which foods can be tolerated and at what quantities.

The diet is quite complex as FODMAPs are present in a range of different foods across many of the food groups, so it’s important to follow the diet under the guidance of a dietitian.

Know that it may not be forever Our bodies are constantly changing so while you may be experiencing an increase in symptoms at the moment know that it’s not likely to be a permanent issue.

e’ve readily confessed in the past to being unabashed lovers of Chardonnay, a drop we’ll defend to the end against the chorusings of the “not another Chardonnay” crowd.

And when recently offered a sip of a just-released 2015 from Apple Tree Flat in the NSW Central Ranges, we told ourselves that here was yet another reason for our love of the variety… although we did have one query: how come one of such elegance and complexity could be sitting on our local liquor store shelves at just $13?

So we put our query to the 2015’s winemaker Peter Logan, who confessed his own love of the variety, and added: “When handled with respect and allowed to show its true elegance, this one’s proof as to just what can be achieved at any price point.”

Peter also spoke of the 2015 vintage that he described as a joy in his NSW Central Ranges, the region enjoying a sunny and dry spring and summer, and mild temperatures throughout both seasons. And all of which, he says, then continued into autumn, ensuring a harvest of richly flavoured grapes with good texture and varietal character, and thus this ultimately lovely chardonnay with its flavours of pear, lemon and nectarine before a long clean finish.

A really great drop with seafood party platters or a dinner of grilled salmon.

One to note: T’gallant that was founded amid the rolling hills of Main Ridge on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in 1990, has a nice range of bubblies pitched at the growing market for quality sparklings priced around $15 to $20 (pictured).

Foot care for individuals with Diabetes is important at all times, however with the cooler weather approaching us, a change in our routine is imminent and can pose a risk to our foot health.

Diabetic affected feet can present with altered sensation and a reduction in blood circulation.

As a result, cuts, wounds, blisters, and other foot lesions, may not be causing any pain and you may inaccurately determine hot-cold temperatures.

Additionally, a reduction in blood flow can delay healing. When poorly managed, infection may develop and the risk of ulcerations rise with the potential to lead to amputations.

Prevention of Diabetic foot related complications is always the best management and here are a few ways to help your feet survive the winter months.

Check your feet daily Since neural sensation is altered, it is important to check your feet by looking at them and feeling for any changes. If you find it difficult to see the bottom, a mirror can be helpful or ask a relative to assist.

Keep your feet dry Dry thoroughly between your toes and avoid leaving shoes outside in the winter

frost where they can become damp.

Moisture between the toes is a perfect environment for fungal infections to develop.

Excessive heat can dehydrate the skin and can cause burns to occur. Avoid sitting directly in front of a heat source such as heaters, car foot heater and open fireplaces. Also monitor water temperatures when bathing. Instead use socks and slippers to keep your feet warm.

Soaking your feet in excessively warm or hot water also reduces skin moisture and can cause macerated skin. Minimise soaking to luke warm water and always apply a moisturiser after.

Apply an emollient every day to restore foot moisture all over the feet avoiding the spaces in between the toes.

Keep your nails well-trimmed Long, irregular nails, especially in enclosed footwear, can cause trauma to the surrounding skin.

It is always best to have your nails managed by a Podiatrist if you have Diabetes.

Podiatrists are trained to perform neurovascular assessments to assess your risk of Diabetic foot related complications and can appropriately determine a management plan specific for your needs and situation.
