$100k reward to help solve mystery Wentworth Falls local Tracey Valesini went missing in 1993, now her mother is desperate for answers ERIN MAMO

he NSW Government has announced a $100,000 reward for information about missing Wentworth Falls resident, Tracey Valesini.

Last Wednesday, detectives from the Unsolved Homicide Team joined Ms Valesini’s family on what would have been her 45th birthday, to appeal to the public for information on her disappearance and suspected murder.

Aged 20, Ms Valesini was last seen in January 1993 at a custody hearing for her two daughters at Campbelltown Courthouse.

During a police investigation that went on for years after Ms Valesini was reported missing, it was determined that she died in her Wentworth Falls home at some point between January 1993 and December 1993.

A forensic examination of the bathroom at the McLaughlin Avenue home found blood, believed to be Ms Valesini’s.

In 2001, a Coronial Inquest then determined that Ms Valesini died at the home from injuries inflicted upon her by another person.

With the matter now referred back to the

Unsolved Homicide Team for future investigation, Ms Valesini’s family said they just want to know what happened to her.

The victim’s mum, Sandra McSavaney, said someone out there knows what happened to her girl.

“Enough is enough, please tell the police what you know and help put my mind at ease,” she said.

“No one should ever have to bury a child, but I haven’t even been given that opportunity.

“We’ve had too many birthdays and too many Christmases without Tracey and I am pleading for someone to come forward.”

Unsolved Homicide Team Coordinator, Detective Inspector, Stewart Leggat, said the mum of two was a resilient, independent young woman.

“Unfortunately, these strengths have made investigating her disappearance difficult for police,” he said.

“That said, it was out of character for her to not show up at court the following month for a custody hearing, as her daughters were her world.

“It has been 24 years since Tracey was last seen, 24 long years for her family and detectives are giving everything they’ve got to provide answers to them.”

The media industry lost a giant last week when the founding Editor of the Blue Mountains Gazette, Mick Ticehurst passed away at the age of 79.

It was no surprise to see a huge turnout at his funeral service in Springwood on Friday morning.

Mick Ticehurst had a passion for newspapers, and an even bigger passion for the Blue Mountains.

In an era where newspapers ruled, Mr Ticehurst combined those two passions with enormous success.

He first moved to the Blue Mountains

in 1958, and so began a long and proud association with the region.

His passing at Katoomba Hospital on July 3 marked the end of an era, and I join with all our media colleagues in passing on our deepest sympathies to Mr Ticehurst’s family and friends.

Plastic bag free for more than 35 years Community encouraged to follow Co-Op’s lead and dump plastic bag use to help the environment ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains Food Co-Op has hosted a Plastic Free July event to advocate for reduced plastic bag use in the community.

Education and Member Liaison Coordinator, Prue Adams, said although the Co-Op has been plastic bag free since it opened, the month is an opportunity to encourage both the community and other businesses to follow in their footsteps.

“We’ve never sold a plastic bag in the 36 years we’ve been open,” Ms Adams said.

“We encourage our customers to bring their own re-usable bag or recycled jars or we have paper bags that can be purchased for a small price.”

At the event the Co-Op hosted a number of environmentally friendly people and initiatives which gave the community the chance to learn new things like how to screen print recycled fabric bags and make yarn.

Also on hand was recycling extraordinaire Marina Brown to give tips on recycling and living plastic free.

Students and staff from St Canice’s Primary School were also at the event talking about how they have reduced

Boomerang Bags Blue Mountains also took part in preparation for the launch of their sustainable bags which will be held at the Co-Op this September.

“As of September we will sell Boomerang Bags in the shop as another alternative way to shop,” Ms Adams said.

“The idea of a boomerang bag is that you give them out to people in need of a bag and you may possibly get one back.”

Ms Adams said the store is really trying to get people to change their way of thinking and to re-use and recycle wherever they can.

“We also promote bulk buying in the shop as a good way to prevent using materials that have a negative effect on the environment,” she said.

The Co-Op in Katoomba is a not-forprofit organisation that is run completely by volunteers.

They sell certified organic and biodynamic fresh fruit and vegetables, chemical free local produce, bulk wholefoods and foods for special dietary needs.

Blackheath: Cars collide in frightening accident At around 1.40pm on Thursday, June 29, police were contacted to attend a serious motor vehicle accident outside Mount Boyce Checking Station in Blackheath.

It was reported that a silver Holden Commodore, being driven by a 31-year-old Lithgow male has come over a slight crest and collided with a Mitsubishi Magna travelling in the same direction.

The impact then pushed the Magna an extensive distance resulting in significant damage to both vehicles.

The occupants of the Magna, a 74-year-old and 78-year-old, were assessed at the scene and cleared of any injury however the driver of the Holden was airlifted from the scene due to chest pain.

Police investigations are continuing.

Katoomba: Bushwalker found suffering chest pains On Tuesday, June 27, Police Rescue were contacted to assist with an injured bushwalker at the base of the Giant Stairway at Katoomba.

Upon arrival police and paramedics entered the walk, locating the 48-year-old male resting at the base and suffering chest pains.

Following medical assessment, the injured bushwalker was able to be transported by cable car to Scenic World where he was further assessed.

Katoomba: Motorcycle slams into stationary car On Monday, July 3, a 19-year-old man was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition after his motorcycle collided with a car along the Great Western Highway in Katoomba.

It’s understood the motorcycle hit the back of a stationary vehicle.

CareFlight’s rescue helicopter was called to help shortly before 4pm, landing at Melrose Park in Katoomba.

NSW Ambulance transported the man to the park to meet the helicopter as it landed.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic provided ongoing care for the man, who suffered a fractured leg and facial injuries in the accident.

He was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

At approximately 11pm on Thursday, June 29, police attended Blaxland Tavern following reports of an altercation between two patrons.

It was reported that a 20-year-old male from Faulconbridge pulled out a machete and made unprovoked threats of harm to a 27-year-old Warrimoo male prior to being escorted from the premises.

The male then returned to the premises in an attempt to carry out an assault on the victim and was once again removed.

Following further investigation, the 20-year-old male was arrested and charged with the following offences, ‘armed with

intent to commit indictable offence’, ‘affray’ and ‘drive motor vehicle while suspended.’

He’ll appear in court this month.

Novel set in the Blue Mountains gets released ERIN MAMO

emember the name Alexandra Nagy because the 24-year-old Bathurst local is definitely going places.

Having just published her first novel The Could Be Ring, which is set in the Blue Mountains, the young author tells the story of a boxer who has it all and then loses it because of drugs and alcohol.

“The story is told from the perspective of the boxer’s lover,” Ms Nagy told the Record.

“It’s about messy, real life relationships and tackles issues like alcoholism, controversial love and conflict.

“It was inspired by a man I knew years ago, who I gave a lift home to one night and he told me a little bit of his life story, which was really powerful.”

In just five weeks the book, which Ms Nagy published and distributed herself, has sold almost 200 copies in the Blue Mountains and Central West NSW. Now, Ms Nagy hopes to get the The Could Be Ring out to the rest of the country.

She said she is even in talks about it becoming a movie.

“There was always the possibility that it would be turned into a movie and set

in the picturesque Blue Mountains where the two main characters live,” Ms Nagy revealed.

“Now, I’m in the process of writing the screenplay for it.”

While working on the novel, Ms Nagy met Australian actor Aaron Jeffery – bestknown for his work on ‘McLeod’s Daughters’ – who expressed his interest in being part of the project if it’s ever turned into a film.

Last month, Mr Jeffery and his partner and fellow actor Zoe Naylor even attended The Could Be Ring book launch in Bathurst, to show their support.

Ms Nagy, who comes from a writing background having worked at The Australia Times Magazine for three years before she decided to put pen to paper in paperback form, said she is looking forward to making this her permanent career.

“I’d like to write another book down the track, that’s the plan,” she said.

Clean air continues to be Council’s top priority ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains City Council is on track when it comes to reducing carbon emissions in the World Heritage area.

Council confirmed at its recent June 27 meeting that they were successfully working towards reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent over a five year period after endorsing their 2017-2018 targets.

Over the next 12 months, Council will now install solar systems at their two resource recovery and waste management facilities as well as at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub in Springwood.

They will also spend up to $425,000 on upgrades at Springwood and Katoomba Leisure Centres. “The actions outlined in the Carbon Abatement Action Plan will reduce electricity emissions by up to 270 tonnes per year at Council’s larger facilities,� Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill said. “This is an excellent outcome for the first year of this program.�

An Investment Plan for 2017-18 also includes actions like a feasibility study into solar compactor bins, investigating a cost effective street light upgrade schedule,

expansion of an energy audit program to identify further opportunities in Council buildings and staff training. “These initiatives will help build our capacity and are designed to move Council towards best practice,� Cr Greenhill said. “The scope of our carbon reduction activities includes installing 300 kilowatts of additional renewable energy by 2022.�

Blue Mountains Council has also established a Carbon Revolving Reserve to provide an ongoing source of funding to implement the Carbon Abatement Action Plan.

Cr Greenhill said the funding model is the cornerstone to the future success of the Carbon Abatement Action Plan, which lays a pathway to significantly reducing Council’s absolute carbon emissions in the longer term, while contributing to ongoing financial savings. “It will enable Council to become a leader in the field of carbon abatement,�

Cr Greenhill said.

Giving up the drink for a good cause Mt Riverview local Brian D’Heureux has stopped drinking alcohol this month to raise money for cancer ERIN MAMO

ry July is underway and many Aussies have put down their cold beer, to raise money for people affected by cancer.

Mt Riverview resident Brian D’Heureux is one of these people who, for the second year, has committed to no alcohol for 31 days.

“My father has prostate cancer and I’ve watched him go through the journey, all of the appointments and surgery,” he said.

“I wanted to do something to help. Until cancer touches you or someone close to you, you don’t really think about it.”

The father of two said he isn’t a big drinker but, over a week into the challenge, he’s already feeling healthier.

“So far, so good,” Mr D’Heureux said.

“I’d usually have a drink on a Friday and Saturday night but I haven’t minded missing out yet.

“It’s all for a good cause.”

Over the last decade, Dry July has been able to raise over $26.5 million towards services that address patient anxiety and the side effects of cancer treatment, including complementary therapies, wellness programs and wig libraries.

Brett Macdonald, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Dry July, said the organisation couldn’t have dreamed of raising this figure when they first started in 2007.

“Every month an average of 11,181 Australians are diagnosed with cancer,” he said.

“It’s a diagnosis no one asks for, which is why Dry July asks Australians to take part in raising money for people who are suffering.

“It’s a chance to make a real difference to the lives of people affected all around Australia.”

From scalp cooling hats and virtual reality headsets, to transportation and free Wi-Fi, Dry July has provided funding to 69 cancer support organisations since their establishment.

So far, Mr D’Heureux has raised $405 for the cause but is aiming to get to $500 before the month ends.

Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever returns to Woodford Acadmy on July 15 ERIN MAMO

t’s time to put on your red dress and dancing shoes and gather on the misty moors of the Woodford Reserve for the Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever.

For the second straight year, Hazelbrook resident Miriam Williamson is coordinating a homage to British pop sensation Kate Bush and her hit ‘Wuthering Heights’ on Saturday, July 15, where people of all ages and genders are invited to perform the dance.

The event began in 2013 when UK artist Shambush gathered 300 Kate Bush impersonators in Sussex Park to re-create the famous moment from the 70s.

Since then, Kate Bush wannabes have been getting involved all over the world.

“I decided the Mountains needed to get involved after a friend of mine in Hobart told me she was putting an event together in her town,” Ms Williamson said.

“I expected about 50 people to turn up last year but we had over 200 on the lawn – it was a sea of red.”

With people travelling from Newcastle and Sydney last year to take part, Ms Williamson said they are expecting an even bigger crowd this time.

A rehearsal will also be held on Thursday, July 13 from 6.30pm to 7:30pm at the Holy Trinity Church in Wentworth Falls.

Boosting the local economy Leading holiday rental platform, Stayz, has released a new report by ACIL Allen Consulting highlighting the significant benefit of short-term accommodation to the Blue Mountains economy.

In NSW, short-term rental accommodation provided an economic lift of nearly $2.128 billion to the NSW economy and supported 13,983 jobs in the State.

In the Blue Mountains, short-term rental accommodation generated over $43.4 million in economic uplift and supported up to 296 jobs in the region. In 2016, 59,086 room nights were booked in shortterm rental accommodation across the Blue Mountains, generating $11.6 million in revenue for hosts.

“Short-term rentals have been an Australian holiday tradition for many years and rental platforms such as Stayz have helped facilitate and expand this pastime to the benefit of towns and cities across Australia,” said Stayz Corporate Affairs Director, Jordan Condo.

“This report confirms that short-term rental accommodation is a key driver of tourism, job-creation and economic activity in the Blue Mountains.

“Towns and cities like Lithgow, Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath are all benefiting from the growing popularity of shortterm rental accommodation.

“Tourism has always been a key part of the Blue Mountains economy and shortterm rental accommodation is increasingly part of the area’s tourism success.”

Federal Parliament has begun its winter break, which means I don’t have to be in Canberra every other week until August.

Last weekend was also one year since the last Federal election, marking my first year as the Member for Macquarie.

When I tell people I am “off to Canberra”, most people probably think of Question Time.

Fortunately, there is a lot more to Parliament than that hour and 10 minutes each sitting day.

The real work of Parliament is the stuff that you don’t see.

I have the privilege of sitting on the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT), and the Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts.

JSCOT has Senators and Members, from all political parties, who come together to look at every international treaty before it goes to Parliament.

So far we’ve looked at a diverse range of treaties including the Paris Climate Agreement, Timor-Leste Maritime Arrangements and the Loan Agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

It’s not a debate, but a process informed by detailed briefings from departments, independent research with an opportunity to question experts. A report goes

These are just two of the many Parliamentary Committees that meet regularly to consider the finer details of legislation and policy concerning Australia’s future.

Within the Labor Party, we also have caucus committees that meet to discuss and help develop our own policies, and our position on Government legislation that is coming before the Parliament.

y husband and I have often told people that we could never work together. We understand ourselves well enough to know we would not have the required patience and would not relish the constant overlap of ‘work’ into ‘leisure’ time. However, there are many businesses that are run by husband and wife teams.

Whether it has come about as the result of circumstances or from a desire to achieve some work-life balance, there can be many benefits to partnering in business with your partner in life.

If you are going to embark on a business venture with a partner, it is crucial to set ground rules before you start.

Diplomacy will be required regularly, as will the ability to concede and compromise. If you are both determined to ‘win’ every disagreement, you will get nowhere fast!

You will need to have mutual respect for one another, recognise each other’s talents, and keep those things in mind when differences of opinions arise. This will make navigating those situations much smoother.

Most business partnerships consist of two people with different strengths and skill sets. Where this exists, and when effective communication has taken place to delineate roles, it can result in a smooth-running workplace.

But often, as a business matures and changes, those lines can become blurred and that is where challenges can arise.

In those instances, it is important to remember that you both have the business’ best interests at heart, even if the journey to get there is different.

And it is where the art of compromise will need to be practiced in earnest!

Learn to utilise each other’s strengths and learn to swallow your pride.

If you can both keep perspective and have your business goals in the forefront, you will have a much better chance of maintaining a successful work (and life!) partnership.

Prior to the world being blessed with smart phones and their apps, anyone who needed to do some ‘on the spot’ calculating had to rely on a range of genuine ‘old school’ methods.

Shortcuts were few and far between, but there were a few tricks you could rely on.

One such ‘trick’ was the Rule of 72, a wonderful help when analysing potential investment returns.

Quite simply, it is a method to calculate the effects of compound interest, and is very useful for financial estimates.

How the Rule of 72 can benefit you

All you need to do is divide the investment rate of return into the number 72. The resulting answer will be the number of years it takes for your principle to double.

So let’s say you’re getting a 5 per cent return, just divide 72 by 5 = 14.4. Presuming you keep up the 5 per cent return for the life of the investment, your money is on track to double in 14.4 years.

What if you want to double your money in 10 years? Well you need an interest rate of 72/10 or 7.2 per cent.

Some of you reading this may not be too excited by this next bit, but the rule of 72 can also be handy for a quick evaluation of economic conditions.

For example, if GDP grows at 3 per cent a year, the economy doubles in 72/3 or 24 years. And if growth slips to 2 per cent, it will take 36 years to double. But, should Government policy be able to boost that to 4 per cent the economy will have doubled in 18 years.

But not only does the Rule of 72 work for growth estimates, you can also use it for expenses.

So if you’re paying 15 per cent interest on your credit card the amount you owe will double in only 72/15 or 4.8 years! No surprise there.

So, rather than being a relic of a bygone era, the Rule of 72 can still be useful when you need to do some financial analysis.

At the very least, it will certainly come in handy if your phone battery suddenly goes dead!

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

Concert with a twist typical concert is made up of a collection of songs broken up by audience banter.

Stu Hunter’s ‘the migration’ is not

your typical concert.

This month at The Joan the Australian producer, composer and pianist will perform his acclaimed modern jazz suite in its 80 minute entirety backed by a 10 piece band – including a horn section, percussionists and vocalist.

It’s a unique non-stop performance that has delighted audiences and earned Stu a standing ovation during its launch at last year’s Sydney Festival.

“The audience can expect to sit down and buckle in and be taken on a tremendous ride with us, it’s a journey piece,” Stu explained of ‘the migration’.

“It’s one of those experiences where you can tune out to all those other things going on in life and tune into this moment and really be taken on a ride.

“That’s what I would be hoping the audience gets out of this.”

As a performer, playing for 80 minutes straight without a break is an intense experience, but one that Stu is no stranger to.

“There’s a certain pressure involved in not stopping,” he said.

“It’s the third suite I’ve written like this, so we are very used to that dynamic now.”

While his work is often put into the category of ‘jazz’, Stu tends to shy away from the label.

“The word jazz is just such a massive umbrella and can mean so much,” he said.

“I would describe my music as highly visual. It’s very dynamic and highly composed.

“I write for the ensemble itself and for the specific musicians, they’re all colleagues of mine and some of us go back 30 years or more together.”

This year Stu was asked to perform at the popular TEDx Sydney event, which explores a wide range of ideas from a diverse group of speakers.

“It was a real honour, I’ve always been an admirer of the TED brand and the content and ideas they want to express to people,” Stu said.

For his performance at The Joan, Stu is hoping that audiences will be just as open to a new musical experience.

“Put your preconceptions aside because what we’re doing with this incredible group of musicians is something that you’ve never seen before,” he said.

“For us it’s about connection with the audience.

“This is not a bunch of musicians on stage preaching, it’s a piece of music

designed to meet you in the middle and make you a part of the experience.”

We confuse ourselves by trying to avoid so-called bad foods and finding new fad diets, but the answer is really a lot simpler...

As a nutritionist I’ve had my fair share of food related questions.

While they tend to cover a broad range of topics there are two questions that seem to come up time and time again.

This week I thought I’d address those common nutrition queries.

Is (x food) bad for me?

I started my nutrition career almost a decade ago and it’s amazing how many different foods have been labelled as ‘bad’ over that time.

Fat, carbs, gluten, meat, dairy, I’ve heard it all and no matter what food it is my answer remains the same – it’s the dose that makes the poison.

Is a piece of bread ‘bad’ for you? No. Is eating half a loaf of bread a day a good idea? Probably not.

Labelling a food as ‘bad’ is an extreme oversimplification and fails to take into account our own unique requirements and preferences.

The best advice I can give on this subject is to aim for balance and listen to your body.

Unfortunately that doesn’t mean diets are the best approach.

In fact, the worst way to lose weight in the long-term is to go on a diet, with the overwhelming majority of people regaining lost weight and sometimes more than they started with!.

It’s boring, and may not be as easy to market to consumers, but the best way to improve your eating habits is by eating when you’re hungry, stopping when you’re full, and aiming for a varied diet with plenty of vegetables.

In Australia black muscat grapes are usually used to make frivolous pink moscatos and muscat liqueurs. Instead, Stuart Olsen has made a dry, quite aromatic rosé showing nuances of Turkish delight. It’s light, flavoursome, and good just about anywhere that doesn’t demand anything too serious. Rosalia, incidentally, is a Hungarian rosé festival — and the name of Stuart’s grandmother. WINE OF THE WEEK Topper’s Mountain 2012 Wild Ferment Tempranillo ($32, pictured): Tempranillo really seems to have taken off in Australia — and for the very good reason that the variety is making some exceptional dry reds. This is a firmly structured dry red with excellent balance of fruit, oak and tannin. The fruit lies predominantly in the dark-plum spectrum, but there are spices too, principally of the Middle Eastern persuasion. But for me the main feature lies in the long flavours of an elegant, firmly structured wine … and then there’s the elegant package you’d be proud to display on your table at the local bistro. Matildas call Penrith home n one of the biggest local sporting coups since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, an agreement between Penrith Council and Football Federation Australia will see Australia’s national women’s football team, the Matildas, face-off against the might of Brazil in Penrith later this year.

The first game in a two-match International Series will be played at Pepper Stadium on Saturday, September 16. The great rivalry between the two teams – ranked seventh and eighth in the world – is expected to produce a thriller of a match and a near sell-out crowd.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the popularity of soccer locally, particularly with women, was a major factor in bringing the game to Penrith.

“Penrith has more than 14,000 registered soccer players and a large proportion of these are female, so it makes complete sense to bring the world’s best to Penrith so our local players and supporters can watch and be inspired by them,” he said.

“We’ve also got passionate soccer fans of all ages who will be thrilled to have an opportunity to see an international game of soccer played in their own backyard.”
