Man behind bars for drunken fight 34-year-old Springwood man sentenced to 32 months in prison for bashing two random men ALENA HIGGINS

Springwood man who bashed two random men in a brutal drunkenfuelled attack has been sentenced to 32 months jail.

34-year-old Jason Walshaw was supported by a large contingent of family members as he sat in the dock of Penrith Local Court awaiting his fate last Friday afternoon.

The father-of-one was arrested and charged with ‘reckless wounding’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ after he was caught on CCTV footage laying into the men at a Springwood establishment in May last year, in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

The vision shows Mr Walshaw punching the first victim hard to the face, knocking him back onto the pool table.

When the victim’s friend comes to his aid, he himself is knocked to the ground where Mr Walshaw proceeds to kick him in the ribs, at one stage using a bar stool as a weapon.

The harrowing incident lasts for several minutes until Mr Walshaw’s friend, who tried valiantly to get him to stop, finally succeeds.

contact” between the offender and the first victim prior to the assault. “[The first victim] spends most of the time at the other end of the room playing pool and is the first to be attacked, and the

most viciously,” he said.

Victim number one sustained about $23,000 worth of dental damage, while his friend suffered six broken ribs and an impacted tooth, the court heard.

While it was his first time in custody, Mr Walshaw had a history of violence and was on a Section 9 good behaviour bond for a domestic violence assault at the time of the attack, which Magistrate Georgia Knight labelled a “seriously aggravating feature”.

He was also charged and pleaded guilty to ‘deem supply’ after police found 13 vacuum sealed bags of cannabis at his home.

Magistrate Knight accepted it wasn’t premeditated or planned, that Mr Walshaw had expressed some amount of remorse and was suffering from anxiety and depression at the time, but said he needed to be severely punished by the courts.

“Mr Walshaw did engage in an unprovoked, fairly random attack with very little excuse,” she said.

“It does require a severe penalty to be imposed.”

With time already served, he will be eligible for release on parole on June 25, 2018.

Blue Mountains City Council is calling on the local community to help squash disgusting litterbugs in the area.

Council recently teamed up with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Roads and Maritime Service to tackle roadside litter, that is unattractive and expensive to manage.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said last year western Sydney councils spent $14 million collectively on litter management, and now they are asking residents to report people throwing their rubbish out of their vehicles.

“I encourage residents to report littering from vehicles on the Report to EPA website”, he said.

“Roadside litter is unpleasant but it can also increase risk to motorists and in the case of cigarette butts, cause dangerous bushfires.

“We want to send a strong message that wherever you are, if you litter, you are likely to be caught, forcing motorists to think twice before littering from vehicles.”

To report litterbugs, residents need to note down the vehicle’s registration

Blue Mountains Council wants the local community to report litterbugs number and where the littering incident occurred, and then log it on the EPA website.

Litterbugs will then face a fine of up to $900 for each offence they commit.

According to an EPA spokesperson, the deterrent system has been developed after research suggested that less people are likely to litter if they think someone is watching.

“By making everybody a witness we expect people will think twice before

tossing litter from their vehicle,” the spokesperson said.

The EPA further confirmed that if an individual is incorrectly dobbed in for littering that they can fight the matter in court.

Anyone who is reporting a litterbug must also be prepared to attend court if their claim is questioned.

While residents are encouraged to get involved in reporting a tosser, safety should be the first priority when driving.

With all of its colour and creativity, the 2017 Springwood Community Quilt Show is back.

From Friday, April 28, local quilters will display over 120 quilts of all different sizes and styles, in what is set to be the biggest show yet.

Springwood quilter Rachael Daisy, who regularly has her designs in competitions and events all over the world, said the local show, is always a special one.

“The Springwood Quilt Show is always special because it has a wide variety of quilts and it really represents the quilting community in the Mountains,” she said.

This year Ms Daisy has two of her creations in the show, one a denim and floral piece and the other a collection of patches boasting different homes from around the world.

This year the show, now in its 12th year, will have trader tables selling fabric, quilt patterns, handmade goods and vintage sewing treasures.

The feature quilter is Anne Sommerlad, a renowned quilter in the region who will have nine of her pieces on display and will be on hand to talk to quilting enthusiasts.

Like in previous years, the majority of proceeds will go to the Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service.

The Quilt Show will be held at Springwood High School from Friday, April 28 to Sunday, April 30. It will run from 10am to 4pm each day. Entry is $6 for an adult and $4 for a pensioner or child.

Katoomba: Man caught and arrested for stabbing

Shortly after 9pm on Thursday, April 6, an incident occurred on Pulpit Hill Road, Katoomba, where a 34-year- old male resident and a 27-year-old male resident engaged in a heated altercation.

It is alleged that the older male armed himself with a kitchen knife and threatened to stab the younger male, who went into a bedroom to hide.

The accused forced his way into the bedroom and a short physical altercation occurred, before the accused stabbed the 27-year-old male in the arm.

Upon police arrival, the accused fled the scene and ran into nearby bushland where he was caught and arrested.

He was taken to Katoomba Police Station where he was charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, ‘armed with intent to commit an indictable offence’ and ‘intimidation’.

The male was bail refused and will appear before Katoomba Local Court this month.

The victim sustained a minor laceration from the stabbing.

Warrimoo: Drunk man crashes car multiple times

After 6pm on Saturday, April 8, a 53-yearold male from Warrimoo was driving along Macquarie Road, Springwood, near the Hawkesbury Road roundabout, where it is alleged his car mounted the kerb and crashed into a street sign.

The driver then turned onto Hawkesbury Road and drove across the overpass and

crashed into the rear of a vehicle directly in front of him before crossing onto the wrong side of the road and crashing into the side of another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Police arrived shortly after and it is alleged that the driver at fault became uncooperative and repeatedly refused to supply a roadside breath test.

He was subsequently arrested at which point he became aggressive and attempted to kick the two police officers.

The male was eventually handcuffed and whilst being led to the rear of the police vehicle, he again attempted to kick the officers.

The male was taken to Springwood Police Station where he submitted to a breath analysis, which returned a reading of 0.223 grams of alcohol.

He was charged with the offences of ‘refuse breath test’, ‘resist/hinder police’ and ‘drive with high-range PCA’.

His licence was suspended on the spot, and he was granted bail and is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on April 27.

Katoomba: Man arrested for striking security officer About 11pm on Saturday, April 8, a 20-yearold male from Katoomba went to the Harp and Fiddle bar on Main Street, Katoomba where he is banned due to past incidents.

Upon being denied entry, the male became argumentative and made various threats to staff members, before striking a male security officer in the chest.

Police were contacted and the man was arrested. He’ll appear in Court on May 1.

ancer Wellness Support is holding their annual Sunshine Day next month for people living with cancer and their carers.

Each year the group holds the Open Day to reach out to people in the community who could benefit from their services.

Administrative Coordinator, Shelley Fitzpatrick, said although the support group has been operating in the Blue Mountains for a decade, a lot of people still don’t know it exists.

“We are hoping to spread the word and let people in the community know that

we are here for them,” she said.

At the Open Day, the support group will have guest speakers and therapists on hand to provide demonstrations and a range of information about the different services that are available to people who are suffering from any type of cancer.

“Our therapists will be available to answer any questions and offer guidance to people about the choices that are best for them,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

The Open Day will be held at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub on Saturday, May 6.

recently attended a seminar at my children’s school on ‘Growth Mindset’. This concept was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and described in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. According to Dweck, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits”. Conversely, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the starting point”.

Although this concept is being adopted in education, there are applications for this in all areas of life, including business. Imagine if the qualities you thought were ‘fixed’ can be changed?

What if focusing on a growth mindset meant that you become less worried about looking ‘smart’ and put more energy into learning and changing?

A key component of growth mindset is focusing on the effort, and praising the learning and progress that has been made, not just the end result. It is about encouraging appropriate risk-taking,

with the knowledge that some risks won’t be successful.

You might think that because you’re flexible or have a positive outlook that you already have a growth mindset.

Or you might wonder how, when you are your own boss, that you can praise yourself for your efforts?

Ideally, having a coach or mentor who espouses this concept, is a great asset. However, you can still practice and consciously change your thoughts and actions to achieve change in this area. For example, if you hear yourself saying “I can’t do this!”, change your words and thinking to “I can’t do this YET”. When faced with a challenging situation, resist the urge to feel insecure or defensive, as both of these inhibit growth.

Learn to talk to your ‘fixed mindset persona’: if it is telling you “this situation is insurmountable”, talk back to it and persuade it to find a way forward.

And importantly, reward yourself when you have learnt something new. Try new strategies, understand that some won’t work, and learn from setbacks.

With Easter holidays well underway, what better time than now to catch up on some reading. So for all you investors out there, here are a few books I recommend.

Mention the name Warren Buffet and everyone knows who you mean but mention Benjamin Graham and prepare for some very blank stares. But, without Graham’s book The Intelligent Investor, Buffett’s success may not have been so great.

Now, I have long been a fan of share market history.

Over the years I have read a great deal about all sorts of market rallies and crashes,

and I do think it is incredibly important to have some idea of the market events that have gone before us.

Having some knowledge of history certainly helps calm our thoughts when similar events occur today. Remember, one of the biggest mistakes an investor can make is actually believing that ‘it is different this time’ And so here are two books which will certainly help you to appreciate that there really is nothing new in investment markets; Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre and How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market by Nicolas Darvas. Both are incredible ‘reads’ and a must for any investor wanting to add historical perspective to their overall market knowledge.

And finally Burton Malkiel’s A Random Walk Down Wall Street, a classic guide to investing which has become the go-to book when starting a portfolio.

The Princeton professor takes the reader through a number of investing strategies, axioms, truisms and superstitions.

ic Trevino Jnr. may be one of the world’s top Elvis Presley tribute artists, but his love for what he does goes beyond his admiration for

the music icon.

“I do it because I enjoy Elvis, but I also love mid-century America and a lot of the music and the culture of that time,” Vic explained.

“A lot of things started changing in the 1950s and 60s. There was a strong focus on human rights movements, in particular civil rights.

“I think Elvis really helped pushed that with his music because he was kind of the crossroad between white music and African-American music at the time.”

Vic will be bringing those early Elvis years to life on the Evan Theatre stage in the show ‘Elvis – An American Trilogy’, which is currently touring Australia for

the first time. This ultimate Elvis experience will also feature fellow tribute artists Gino Monopoli, who will recreate Elvis’ movie years and his comeback, and Steve Michaels who will channel 70s Elvis in that famous White Eagle jumpsuit.

During Vic’s time performing in some of the biggest tribute concerts in the world, including ‘Legends in Concert’, he has come across all different types of Elvis fanatics.

“You get people that get so lost in the performance, they act like they really have Elvis in front of them, they’re screaming and they’re on the floor going nuts,” he said.

“But then you also have some really passionate Elvis fans who just really don’t like Elvis tribute artists,” he laughed.

While Vic’s main focus is on the music he admits there’s often a strong drive amongst tribute artists to perfectly recreate the classic Elvis look, with some performers even going as far as plastic surgery.

What often gets forgotten is what made Elvis famous in the first place.

“You have to remember that Elvis didn’t

become famous based on the way he looked,” Vic said.

“People weren’t looking up his YouTube videos or following him on Twitter or looking at his selfies on Instagram, people were buying his records.

Too busy to cook? Try these handy kitchen cheats!

We all lead busy lives and sometimes dinner is given a low priority by the time we’re home from work.

But with these handy hints, it can get easier...

Cooking can be fun, but when you add in a busy work schedule and family commitments it can become a painful experience.

So this week I’ve got some tips on how to make life easier in the kitchen.

• When preparing vegetables try stirfrying, which is the quickest, easiest way to cook vegetables. Remember to cook at a high heat and if you want to cut down on the oil try using a spray oil instead.

• Cook up a big batch of baked vegetables – like pumpkin – then store them in the fridge to use in cold meals such as salads and wraps. Add them to leftover cold cooked pasta along with baby spinach or rocket and salad dressing to make a delicious pasta salad.

• Make a batch of chilli or seasoned mince that can be reheated for a range of Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos or burrito bowls.

• Instead of throwing out those vegetables that get left on the plate at dinner

time, try using them the next day in an omelette.

• Meats like lamb and chicken from a Sunday roast work well as hot or cold sandwich fillings.

• If you eat rice often then consider investing in a rice cooker. This way you’ll get perfect rice every time and can focus your attention on cooking the rest of your meal.

• When you can’t be bothered waiting 20 minutes for rice to cook try rice noodles instead. They only need a few minutes in boiling water and can be used in hot dishes like noodle stir fries or cold dishes like rice paper rolls and Asian salads.

• Use up overripe fruits in baked goods like muffins and banana breads, or blend and freeze into cubes for smoothies.

• Boil a heap of potatoes, shallow fry half to make homemade chips and keep the rest in the fridge to mix with mayo and capers for a delicious potato salad.

• Now that we’re coming into the colder weather it’s the perfect time to make up a big batch of soup, which can be frozen or taken to work in a thermos.

• Consider purchasing frozen vegetables. They are just as nutritious as fresh vegetables and the prep work is already done.

fter being slightly deterred by the rain, the Greystanes Foundation was able to hold their annual golf day fundraiser earlier this month.

The annual event is held to raise money for the service provider that specialises in support and advocacy for people with multiple disabilities and high support needs in the Mountains.

Held at Wentworth Falls Country Club, the day showcased some great golfing form despite no one winning the $10,000 hole-in-one major cash prize.

The team ‘Tam O’Shanters’, made up of local businessman from the area, took out the famous Theo Poulos Real Estate Cup. CEO of Greystanes Disability Services, John Le Breton, said the golf day was a great success.

“I want to thank the Blue Mountains community for supporting our fundraiser,” he said.

“It is not just the financial support but the community support that is important to Greystanes Disability Services.”

Mr Le Breton said the partnership between Greystanes and the Central Blue Mountains Rotary is key to the success of the event.

“We cannot thank the volunteers from the Rotary enough for giving up their time to vol-
