’ve made it clear in this column before that I’m a supporter of marriage equality and when my survey form finally arrives, I’ll be proudly ticking yes and sending it straight back. However, I’ve also made clear before that it’s important that the ‘yes’ campaign doesn’t get nasty; that we respect each other’s views and our individual rights to an opinion. So it was with this in mind that I entertained a long conversation over the phone with a reader last week, who I presume was trying to change my mind on the whole thing. He constantly referred to two arguments, which I’ve heard time and time again from those who plan to vote ‘no’ and keep Australia in the dark ages. And both are equally frustrating, and I think playing a misguiding hand in this unfortunate national debate that our politicians were too afraid to have, forcing us to do it for them. “Think of the children” is a favourite from the no campaign. Indeed, think of the children. Think of the children who are in violent and frightening homes across the country, part of Australia’s domestic violence epidemic. Think of the children being bashed, raped and beaten by their parents. We like to bury our head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t happen but our police stations and courts are littered with such tragic stories on a daily basis. Gay couples can raise children right now. They have access to IVF, to the foster care system and the adoption system. We should not spread some sort of false propaganda that the family unit is about to change overnight.

I

What’s worse in the eyes of the no campaigners? A gay marriage that works or a straight one that doesn’t?

So yes, I will think of the children. I’ll think of the children being brought up in households that sprout hate instead of love; children who have parents that teach them that being different to the norm is some sort of infectious disease. At the end of the day, our children learn from us. They are reflections of their parents; and if we teach them the right way, they will grow up tolerant, accepting and understanding people. The other argument the ‘no’ campaign loves to trot out is the sacred nature of marriage being disturbed; that tradition needs to be protected. What a load of hogwash. Tradition is wonderful but please, let’s not pretend Australia is full of happily married couples thanking the Lord above for the glorious wedded bliss they find themselves in. There were 48,517 divorces granted in Australia in 2015.

The divorce rate in this country is constantly increasing, suggesting the current set-up we’re trying to protect isn’t working all that well as it is. What’s worse in the eyes of the no campaigners? A gay marriage that works or a straight one that doesn’t? Those trying to protect marriage as a religious freedom missed the boat long ago. Civil ceremonies in parks, beaches or independent venues are now seen as preferable by couples, turned off by the now tarnished reputation of our churches and the fact that society evolves and changes in its thinking. Those who argue that marriage’s fundamental meaning is to raise children must be pretty boring people. Marriage is much more than that. It’s about love, friendship, commitment and sharing your life with somebody. We need to stop the propaganda and stop pretending that our entire world is going to change by altering the marriage law in Australia. We need to stop claiming that our entire school system is going to be overhauled. We need to stop sharing crap on social media that isn’t verified and in so many cases, isn’t true. Vote yes, vote no, don’t vote at all. Do what you feel is right. But please, don’t vote yes or no based on something you read on Facebook, what the bloke down the road told you or the misguided belief that the very fabric of society is in question. In many cases Australia needs to grow up as a country. Having seen the marriage equality debate unfold, there’s now no doubt about it – we need to have a good, hard look at ourselves as a nation.

Brave firefighters saved many lives Dangerous bushfire could have claimed many victims if it wasn’t for incredible display of bravery ERIN MAMO

n 2013 Yellow Rock resident Bob Pearson and four firefighters battled hell on Earth to save over 50 victims who stood in the path of an out of control bushfire. Now the five men are being honoured with Australian Bravery Awards for their efforts during the 2013 bushfires that tore through Yellow Rock and Winmalee destroying over 200 homes. On October 17, 2013, St Marys Fire Station got the call that a large fire was moving through the two suburbs. After being dispatched to the area to help, Tony Gutteridge, John Bugelli, Phillip Holdsworth and Andrew Sarson were notified that 54 people were trapped at a lookout. Mr Gutteridge, who was Station Officer at the time, said they became aware of the civilians when his colleague Phil got a call saying his sister was one of the residents among the group that had sought refuge at the lookout. “The residents couldn’t get out of the area because of burning trees, fallen debris that was blocking the road, thick smoke and spot fires,” Mr Gutteridge recalled.

I

Tony Gutteridge, John Bugelli and Bob Pearson “They thought they would be safe at the lookout because they were out in the open, but the fire was rapidly moving in all around them.”

Thinking quick on their feet, the four well-equipped firefighters battled the conditions and started transporting women and young children from the look-

out to a nearby property that was deemed safe. The owner of the property, Mr Pearson, then returned with the crew to transport the rest of the group – dogs, cats and a bird included. The residents took shelter in the home for five hours as the firefighters and property owner battled the fire with flames as high as 30 metres at one point surrounding the home. Looking back on the experience, Mr Pearson said that bushfires are just a part of living in Yellow Rock. “It’s really isolated out here,” he said. “So we just do what we can on our property to keep it safe.” Mr Pearson said he is humbled to be receiving a bravery award for his efforts that hot spring day. “I’m just an ordinary sort,” he said. “It’s a most humbling experience to be acknowledged in this way.” “It’s good for me and the guys, it wasn’t a one man job that’s for sure - it was a team effort,” Mr Gutteridge added. The five men will be recognised by the awarding of the Group Bravery Citation and will attend a formal ceremony in the coming months to receive the insignia of their award.

ant to make the switch to solar but find it all a little daunting? Then head along to Penrith’s new one-stop solar power and battery storage shop. Penrith Solar Centre, which opened in July, is the brainchild of owner Jake Warner, who noticed how disjointed the process of switching to solar could be while working in the electrical industry. “We were doing solar installs around the area as contractors and through that I realised there’s such a hole in the market for somebody that does a start to finish solar experience,” Mr Warner said. Rather than having to deal with a retailer for the sales process and a contractor for the installation process, Penrith Solar Centre can provide customers with personalised assistance throughout the whole job. “We find out what the customers want to do with their bills and we assign what we think will be right for their needs,” Mr Warner said. “We then do an on-site inspec-

tion, measure their roof and look at their site very specifically to make sure what we are designing is correct and that there’s no hidden surprises on the day of installation.” Penrith Solar Centre installs a wide range of mid to high range solar power and battery storage, including the industry leading Tesla PowerWall 2. While switching to solar can often mean buying through call centres or pestering door to door salesmen, Penrith Solar Centre offers a brand new showroom where customers can see exactly what they’re purchasing. “We built this showroom so that people could come in and have an interactive experience,” Mr Warner said. “They can come and see how solar power and battery storage works and see the products we have on offer.” Though it’s only a couple of months old the business is already a hit, selected as a finalist in the New Business category of the Penrith Local Business Awards.

Airport rejects: MPs denied their say “Our community deserves a voice”: Husar and Templeman left off crucial Western Sydney Airport Forum

mma Husar and Susan Templeman are fuming after they were rejected from becoming members of a Forum helping to guide the future of Western Sydney Airport. The Lindsay and Macquarie MPs had their applications to join the Forum on Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA) denied, leaving both unhappy and concerned for their communities. “Our community deserves a voice if this airport is to proceed,” Ms Husar said. “The community have a right to know what this airport is going to look like, how it will operate, how many of our local people will be employed, and ensuring infrastructure is built.” Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher rejected a written request from Labor’s Infrastructure spokesman, Anthony Albanese, to include Ms Husar and Ms Templeman on FOWSA. In his reply, Mr Fletcher wrote that the level of representation on the Forum was currently appropriate with community representatives from both the Blue Mountains and Penrith included, and that he would keep in mind Ms Husar and

E

Ms Templeman as suggested members should any vacancies arise. Currently, according the FOWSA Terms of Reference, there are 23 members, four of which are State or Federal MPs. These include Liberal Senator Marise Payne, Labor Federal MPs Dr Mike Freelander and Anne Stanley, and Liberal State MP Christopher Patterson. Ms Templeman said western Sydney and the Blue Mountains are constantly facing different rules than eastern Sydney, prompting major concern. “For some reason, the Turnbull Government thinks it’s fine to have one set of rules for the east of Sydney but a different set for the west because the Sydney Airport Forum has 11 Federal MPs on it, not just three,” she said. “FOWSA should provide the perfect forum for a robust investigation and discussion of issues related to the project, and for the community to have a real voice. Sadly, that just isn’t happening.” “If it is good enough for the Minister for Urban Infrastructure who represents Hornsby to sit on a committee for the Mascot airport, why shouldn’t the people of Lindsay have their representative participating on a proposed airport in our backyard,” Ms Husar added.

Gardens will come alive at Festival Now in its 53rd year, the popular Leura Gardens Festival is back bigger and better than ever ERIN MAMO

t’s the season of colour and what better way to celebrate than with the annual Leura Gardens Festival. 2017 marks the festival’s 53rd year and organisers are promising that it will be a spectacular event with some favourite properties returning. President of the Leura Gardens Festival Committee, Brooke Broughton, said visitors to each of the Leura properties will be pleasantly surprised if nature takes its course. “There will certainly be lots of colour,” he said. “A lot of people have taken a great deal of time to prepare their displays and it really is a great opportunity to see gardens that you wouldn’t usually get to see at any other time.” This year the festival, which begins on Saturday, September 30, will host 11 properties. ‘Glensheil’, a one acre block named after a glen in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, is just one of the 11 on display. Purchased by current owner Helen Cannella in 2009, the garden was a blank canvas at the time with a lot of bush that

I

needed to be cleared. Now visitors can expect to see Wollemi pines, a small parterre garden with a central fountain, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, Japanese maples, weeping cherries, David Austin roses, herbaceous peonies and a royal frost birch grove under planted with hellebores and bluebells. Everglades Historic House and Gardens and The Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort will also take part in the festival this year along with the Fairmont Resort. As well as its garden display, the Waldorf will offer ‘Music in the Gardens’, showcasing local bands and singers every afternoon from Sunday, October 1. Several new acts will be appearing as well favourites like the Katoomba Jazz Quartet and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Like in years’ past, all proceeds of the Gardens Festival will go towards the Blue Mountains Hospital. Since the festival’s establishment, organisers have raised over 2.5 million which has gone towards the purchase of equipment, patient amenities and the refurbishment of a ward. Tickets are $25 per person for an allgardens ticket and $8 per person for an individual garden ticket. For more information, visit www.leuragardensfestival.com.au.

Marriage Equality

Local man threatened for voting ‘no’ Springwood man Cameron Phillips is making his stance against same-sex marriage very public ERIN MAMO

ameron Phillips wants the local community to know that he doesn’t have a problem with homosexuals, he just wants democracy in his hometown. The 67-year-old, who has been living in Springwood for most of his life, claims he has recently experienced abuse and is even getting threatened because of his stance against legalising same-sex marriage. For the past few weeks, Mr Phillips has been campaigning in Springwood’s Town Centre, handing out political pamphlets and letting passerbyers know that it’s OK to vote ‘no’ in the postal vote. “People should have the freedom to vote the way they want to and not be afraid to vote ‘no’,” Mr Phillips told the Record. The local man, who worked as a nurse for several years, said he is for the ‘no’ vote because he doesn’t want the institution of marriage, that has served the community for years, to be changed. “I’m perplexed and confused that this is an option,” Mr Phillips said. “There’s potential for a major social structure change and I am endeavouring to have a Christian outlook in all of this.” Last Wednesday, Mr Phillips went to

local police after being told by an angry man that he will be forced out of town by Saturday. “I’m not afraid or intimated by the aggressive people I’ve encountered,” Mr Phillips said. “I’ve been spat on and called names, but that’s OK.” Although Mr Phillips agrees that it is not fair to control a person who identifies as a homosexual or their happiness, he said he has a problem with the freedom of the gay approach. “I’ve heard stories about children who are being encouraged to turn gay,” Mr Phillips said. “I’ve been told they recruit people in schools. “I’ve had dozens of people come up to me in the street saying that they support me and what I’m doing here.” Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics started distributing survey packages to homes in Australia with voting forms inside. While the voting process takes place, Mr Phillips said he is going to continue to campaign in Springwood and possibly neighbouring villages. “I didn’t plan on getting involved in this but I just want democracy to reign free,” he said.

Health

New campaign focuses on facts not myths ERIN MAMO

epean Blue Mountains Local Health District is launching a new campaign to help people better understand victims of sexual assault. #ijustfroze is a campaign that was established in Scotland and is being set up locally to explain the different responses to sexual assault and why survivors shouldn’t be judged for their reaction. Sexual Assault Counsellor, Jessica Cave, said there’s no right or wrong way to react during or after a sexual assault. “Over 50 per cent of assault survivors say they actually ‘just froze’ and were unable to fight back or scream for help,” she said. “Fight, flight and freeze are all normal responses, when frightened, part of our brains can actually shutdown and immobilise our bodies. “It’s a perfectly normal reaction and out of our conscious control.” Ms Cave, who is currently working with police, lawyers and the community to change perceptions, said unfortunately survivors who froze during an assault sometimes think others, including their family, friends and the police may judge them for not fighting back. “They feel ashamed and decide to not to

N

talk about or report the assault,” she said. A large number of survivors don’t tell anyone, for those that do it is often a friend they confine in rather than someone of authority. Ms Cave said the way people respond to survivors of sexual assault when they do disclose information can have a huge impact on their recovery and what happens next. “Thoughtless or judgemental language when talking about sexual assault used by the community or professionals can deepen a survivor’s sense of shame,” she said. In the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Penrith and the Hawkesbury, five people a week seek assistance from or are referred to the Integrated Violence Prevention and Response Service (IVPRS) that the local health district already runs. The service provides support, counselling, court preparation and forensic medical examinations for assault victims. Ms Cave said she hopes this latest campaign will make more survivors feel comfortable to seek out support. “If and when they do, I’m hopeful that they will be met with supportive and helpful responses by those in the community,” she said. IVPRS can be contacted on 4734 2512.

Airport community consultation deeply flawed support for the airport is at an all-time high. He tell us that 91 per cent of people are aware of the plans for the airport, but what the data actually shows is that less than half the surveyed group feel they know ‘a great deal’ or ‘quite a lot’. That means more than half know a ‘small amount’, ‘hardly anything’, ‘nothing at all’ or ‘can’t remember’. Yet this same group is being asked their views on a range of things, and this is taken to be representative of the west. The Government has also divided western Sydney into four survey areas, one of which includes Burwood, Leichhardt, Ashfield and Marrickville. These non-western Sydney residents are being given an equal say on what they think about the impacts of an airport in western Sydney, even though they are completely outside the area that the Government believes will be impacted by 24/7 flights. The other completely disingenuous part of this survey is a question asking whether people are concerned that if the airport operates 24 hours a day there might be noise late at night and early in the morning. It says ‘if’, but, in fact, this Government says the plan is to have aircraft flying right through the night.

It will be no surprise to Blue Mountains residents that an independent assessment shows the Turnbull Government’s community consultation for Badgerys Creek Airport is flawed. It confirms that what the Government did has led to disempowerment, frustration and potential health impacts. This joint study by the Western Sydney Community Forum and the University of NSW Centre for Health Equity Training, Research and Evaluation looked at the positive, negative and unintended impacts of the government’s processes. The study warns that unless the Government changes its approach there will be ongoing negative impacts on the health and wellbeing of my community, including increased stress, anxiety and psychological distress. The study says the Government should immediately change the way it does things, should value community knowledge and opinions, and should be willing to make changes in response to community input. The failure of the Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, to be able to do the right thing is highlighted in the latest report on community attitudes, which the Minister claims show that

Honour of excellence for school leaver St Columba’s student Polly McCauley has received a Bishop of Parramatta Diocese Excellence Award ERIN MAMO

ome of western Sydney’s top Year 12 students have been recognised for academic and community service excellence, and one of them hails from our neck of the woods. Polly McCauley, from St Columba’s Catholic College, attended a special ceremony at St Patrick’s Cathedral recently where she was presented with a Bishop of Parramatta Diocese Excellence Award. The teen was recognised as an exceptional young woman who has given back to her community and helped others through her role on her school’s Community and Service Ministry. Through the Ministry, Polly contributed to a number of worthy projects including raising money for a school in Kenya. “Through the Ministry, myself and three other students were able to raise enough money to build a new classroom at a school in Kenya,” Polly said. “We held a mufti day, a staff car wash and concert, and were able to raise $2500 for the project.” Head of Learning at St Columba’s, Carole Muscat, said the school is enormously proud of Polly.

S

Polly McCauley with Vincent Long Van Nguyen and Executive Director Greg Whitby

“Polly is a very worthy and well deserved recipient of the award,” she said. “She embodies our college values of just action, tender love and humility, and responds compassionately to the needs of the vulnerable members of the community.” Polly, who is planning to study teaching after she graduates, said she hopes to one day visit the school in Kenya and see what her and her peers helped build. 27 Year 12 students from Catholic schools across the diocese were recently acknowledged with a Bishop of Parramatta Award for their outstanding efforts in academic, sporting, creative, vocational and community endeavours. The Most Reverend, Vincent Long Van Nguyen, said the students were selected because they were remarkable role models for their peers. “These young people are a source of inspiration and encouragement in their school communities, particularly in their expression of the Catholic life of their school,” he said. “The award is also a proud moment for the recipient’s parents who have nurtured their daughters and sons, as well as for their teachers who have instilled a passion for excellence.”

Where you can save costs in small business

ith the rise of social media and online forums has also come an increase in the sharing of opinions. Or to put it more bluntly, there seems to be many more people quick to provide a snarky comment or an uninformed tirade. This can also spill in to ‘real life’, with back-handed compliments and less-than-constructive criticisms. As a business owner, how do you stay strong in the face of these types of comments? How do you avoid wasting your energy on trying to work out other people’s intentions or motives? The first way is to not give away your power; that is, don’t allow others to control the way you think, feel or behave. Make a decision that those remarks aren’t going to take up space in your head, or affect your day. Take deep breaths and walk away from a situation. Another important aspect is not to stoop to the criticiser’s level. Maintain your integrity and don’t be tempted to respond in kind. However, this doesn’t mean you will always keep your mouth shut! There are still times when you

need to speak up when it is warranted. If your response is purely to get the last word in, it is not worthwhile. But if it is to call out inappropriate behaviour, a constructive response may be needed. Finally, you need to assess whether you are surrounded by negative and energy sapping people. Renowned businessman Jim Rohn once said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend most of your time with”. Great relationships are reciprocal, where people bring out the best in one another. Constructive people ask themselves, am I acting in a manner that brings other people down, rather than raising them up? If so, what else can I bring to other people’s lives to help them? Although it is possible to build your capacity to deal with tough situations, constant negativity and stress will take a toll on your well-being. You need people around you who will challenge you and assist you to improve. If you are consistently associating only with negative people, it is far more likely that they will rub off on you, rather than the other way around.

M

any small businesses self-fund to get started. Where should you spend money and where can you make savings? This week we focus on websites. Ask – do I really need this? Upon registering your ABN and business name, you can be inundated with offers of services for your business e.g. branding, website, SEO. Although these are typically necessary, it doesn’t mean they need to send you broke! Even some big tech companies started in a garage on a shoestring budget! Always query is this the right solution? There are few scenarios where someone needs to spend $20,000 on a website on day one – yet it happens (and they can be a dud)! Sometimes you will need to spend money, but don’t do it without due consideration. Domain names Your standard domain name should cost around $10-$25 per year. ASIC issued a warning about a company that sends what looks like an invoice for $120 for two years – do not pay! Websites and hosting

I typically recommend WordPress for small business websites. WordPress and WooCommerce (if you need online shopping) are free, as are some themes, and even training. A minimal cost per month (cup of coffee) covers hosting (including free SSL security), so don’t think you need to go super expensive or down the Wix route, as there are other options. If your host doesn’t offer sufficient email, then consider G Suite as an email option for another coffee! When you’ve worked out what you actually offer, then consider spending on professional web design. Aim for progression not perfection! Graphic design Canva is a great tool for creating graphics both for web and social media, and even for print. You can obtain free images (called CC0) from sites like pexels and pixabay (the latter you can make donations to your favourites). Balance is required As a start-up consider where you spend your money wisely. Remember time is important too. For instance some advertising spend is required, but be careful where you use it!

Did you know that the concept of ‘ethical’ investing isn’t new? Probably one of the earliest recorded instances was the Quakers in the 18th century, restricting members from investing time or money in the slave trade. Similarly, around that time in his speech, the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, preached the importance of refraining from investing in industries that “harm one’s neighbour”, such as chemical plants. So it would seem that having a social and environmental conscience has been

an investment filter for a while. These days ‘responsible corporate governance’ has been added into the mix and it is now referred to as ‘sustainability’, a measure of a company’s ability to generate long-term competitive financial returns whilst imparting positive societal impact. I can recall back in the early 2000’s attending quite the

extravaganza to herald the new ‘sustainable investment’ fund, managed by US Vice President, Al Gore. Although his keynote address was more notable for its presidency anecdotes, it did introduce the concept of sustainable investment to 1200 jaded financial planners. These days, investors are just as concerned about a company’s contribution to society as they are about the profitability being extracted. So it’s not surprising that ethical standards are playing a large part in corporate mission statements along with the rise of ‘corporate responsibility’ pages displayed on company websites. It would seem that today’s executives have shed the ‘greed is good’ mantra of the 1980’s. Unfortunately though it appears some executives still believe their responsibility stops at ‘turning off lights’ and ordering recycled paper. For them, ‘societal impact’ is a fall in share price which impacts their bonus, rather than any effect their actions have on customers. Sadly, the moral pulchritude that is so eloquently portrayed on corporate websites forms merely a veneer. When you scratch the surface you will still see Gordon Gekko smiling back at you!

Sarah finds her groove

I

KATE REID

t may have taken Aussie rocker and The Superjesus lead singer Sarah McLeod just three months to write her new solo release ‘Rocky’s Diner’, but it took 12 years to finally feel ready to complete an album. “During that time I never had the discipline to finish a full solo album that I loved and wanted to follow through with,” Sarah explained. “I’ve got a lot of albums that are sitting on my hard drive that I just changed my mind about.” To overcome the fear of that final stage of the process, and create her first solo release since 2005’s ‘Beauty Was a Tiger’, Sarah committed to a three-month songwriting trip to New York. While there she hunkered down in an apartment in the snow-covered city and did nothing but write. “I went a little nutty but I loved it,” she said. “When you reach a point of insanity and you’re on a creative wave it’s really exciting. “It was a really beautiful mindset and it helped me learn a lot about myself.” The album – which the singersongwriter describes as having a ‘dirty, feel-good vibe’ – mixes Sarah’s love of

the golden oldies with her signature dirty rock sound, resulting in hints of Sinatrajoined-an-Aussie-pub-band. “The old stuff is where my brain is, it’s all I listen to really,” Sarah said. “So I write songs in the style of the old stuff but then I produce it dirty and heavy to make it sound more current and more like where I’ve come from.” Sarah is currently in the middle of a national tour with Baby Animals drummer Mick Skelton, which will stop off at Katoomba’s beautiful Baroque Room next month. Though it’s a two person show there’s a very special addition to the entourage in the form of Sarah’s dog, Chachi. “Chachi comes with us absolutely everywhere, she wears little headphones and sits in the crowd, sometimes she gets on stage, she’s happiest when she can hear the music,” Sarah said. “She’s stealing my spotlight but I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the mantel,” she laughed. Between the joy of touring, and creating ‘Rocky’s Diner’, it seems Sarah has managed to spark a newly-inspired musical flame that isn’t going out anytime soon. “I feel like the ball is rolling and I would be a fool to stop because it’s taken me so long to get the freaking thing moving,” she said. “Now that I’ve got the inertia I’ve just

got to roll with it, pardon the pun,” she laughed. Sarah McLeod will be performing at The Baroque Room in Katoomba on Friday,

October 13 at 8pm. Tickets start at $23.50. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.sarahmcleod.oztix. com.au.

CLOSING DATE 4 October

He’s shown at Yard Dog Gallery, Austin TX, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, Philadelphia PA,

Penrith Performing & Visual Arts is on the hunt for an Associate Producer, a part-Ɵme role working alongside the CreaƟve Producer – New Work and Development and a team of seasonal creaƟves to deliver Q Theatre’s annual season of projects at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

The Cleveland International Airport, The Omaha Museum of Art, Shoom Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia, The Baikmin Museum of Bosung Gun, in South Korea, and Firecat Projects in Chicago. In 2016 he was commissioned by Lock Haven University to create two large canvases for their newly renovated Ulmer Hall. He currently lives and works in the mountains of central Pennsylvania where he recently built a new studio. “I was born and raised in a small town in central Pennsylvania where the landscape, seasons, and wildlife profoundly influenced who I am and what I do,” Kurt said. “These elements possess infinite mood, and are ever changing in feel, look and sound. Painting, like everything else has few absolutes – dead right can be dead wrong, beautiful can be grotesque, stupid can be sublime, and funny can be terrifying – all at the same time. My paintings don’t represent anything, they are themselves – the way a song is a song and the sky is the sky.”

This role calls for innovaƟon while working to a project brief, and works closely across all teams including technical and venue to ensure smooth delivery of events. It requires excellent interpersonal and communicaƟon skills, pracƟcal know-how and a flair for organisaƟon as well as creaƟve thinking.

Please join Anala Art Advisory on Saturday, September 23 for the opening of ‘’Colour Bombs’’. Time: 10am-2pm, refreshments will be available. This vibrant body of work will be on display at Anala Art Advisory, 6 Ross Street Glenbrook from the September 23 until October 6.

Ê After the city of Melbourne decided it had enough of drunk B-list TV stars trashing hotel rooms, the party hot spot of the Gold Coast has decided to put its hand up and host next year’s Logie Awards. Despite a late push by the NSW Government to hold TV’s night of nights out west, the Queensland Government have secured the Logies for the next four years. Recently Karl Stefanovic said he would boycott the event if it was not held in Melbourne, however after the Goldie was named it’s understood he changed his mind very, very quickly. This will be the first time the Logies have been held in the Sunshine State.

GOGGLEBOX AUSTRALIA OCTOBER 4 LIFESTYLE

Ê Channel Ten and Foxtel have announced that ‘Gogglebox Australia’ is returning early next month. The show returns to the LifeStyle channel at 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 4 and is once again screening the following day on Ten at 8.30pm. One slight change to the upcoming season, with Zina and Vivian not returning. Ê Season three of ‘The Bachelorette’ starring Sophie Monk begins this Wednesday, September 20 at 7.30pm. Ê Award-winning US comedy ‘Veep’ will end its long run with a final seventh season in 2018. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won five consecutive Emmys for outstanding lead actress for ‘Veep’ and is up for a sixth this month, while the show has won two Best Comedy trophies. Ê Those rumours about ‘Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge’ coming next year to Channel Seven appear to be on the mark, with a casting notice for ‘Australian

Spartan’. Teams of all males, all females or mixed gender teams can apply by visiting go.mycastingnet.com/Apply/Show/ Spartan.

Ê I told you all last week that ‘Survivor’ was due back very soon and I can confirm that 9GO! will be airing the new series from Thursday, September 28 at 7.30pm. Ê Channel Ten has started airing episodes of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ after it mysteriously disappeared from their schedule for a while. Maybe CBS purchasing Ten, which airs Colbert in the US, had something to do with it.

Ê Good news for fans of ‘True Detective’ with season three proceeding. HBO confirmed late last week that the next instalment will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks. A mystery will deepen over decades and play out in three separate time periods. Ê Greig Pickhaver (aka HG Nelson) has a new series coming to SBS called ‘Secrets of our Cities’. In this three-part series, Pickhaver visits Fremantle, Fitzroy and Bondi, to uncover the “hidden history and unsung residents who’ve helped shape these places into the cities they are today”. It premieres on September 26.

he Lawson Trail Run is on in the Blue Mountains this Sunday, September 24. The short course event, organised by not-for-profit Running Wild, offers enthusiastic runners the chance to take part in a 9.2km or 17.4km trek. President of Running Wild, Ian Sargent, said the event always gets a good turn out. “Lawson isn’t too far up the mountain but it still has some great views,” he said. “We tend to get a lot of people from Sydney who decide to make a weekend of it and stay overnight.” Starting north of Lawson, the course promises not to disappoint. Runners will start with a 500m out and back, followed by a decent climb. Towards the end of the two lap course, participants will then head into Echo Bluff and Dante’s Glen. Over 100 people have registered to take part. “We are seeing a trend with more and more women participating in our events, which is great,” Mr Sargent said. “We also want to encourage anyone who may be interested in trail runs to give it a go.” Registration is $40. For more information, visit www.runningwildnsw.com. Runners taking part in last year’s event in Lawson
