New in blue: Recruits ready to serve Two new Probationary Constables start work at Springwood after graduating from Academy ERIN MAMO

ver 130 new police officers began their first week of work across the State last week with two new recruits joining the ranks at Springwood Police Station.

Probationary Constables Mark Rudd and John Sanderson joined the Force after being sworn in at an attestation ceremony at the NSW Police Force Academy in Goulburn on Friday, December 9.

Mark Rudd, who resides in the Lower Blue Mountains, said he always wanted to join the Police Force.

“I grew up in the Blue Mountains, so it’s great to be able to give back to my community,” he said.

“I believe my local knowledge and understanding of the area and the lifestyle will help me in my new position here.”

Superintendant Darryl Jobson from the Blue Mountains Local Area Command, said the new recruits have been well trained and are equipped for the challenges that lay ahead.

“It is always pleasing to receive new officers to the Command and I wish our two latest recruits all the very best in their chosen career,” Mr Jobson said.

The new recruits will now spend a year under the supervision of experienced

officers and continue online learning before graduating with an Associate Diploma in Policing Practice.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione welcomed students from ‘Class 329’ into the NSW Police Force at the recent attestation ceremony.

The Commissioner was joined by the Governor of NSW, David Hurley, to inspect the new recruits on the parade ground.

Before graduating, officers spend a mandatory eight months in training at the Police Academy in Goulburn to prepare for their new careers.

Green light given to Badgerys Airport Turnbull rubberstamps Stage 1 of 24/7 airport • Local MPs condemn approval, vow to fight for protection ERIN MAMO

he Airport Plan for the Western Sydney Airport has been finalised and construction is now authorised to start.

After decades of studies and planning, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull recently announced that all the approvals are in place and Stage 1 can now begin.

Stage 1 of the airport will comprise of a single runway and facilities to cater for 10 million passengers per year.

Mr Turnbull said the need for an airport in western Sydney “has been extremely obvious for many years”, but Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, is not convinced.

Ms Templeman said the Government has broken its own promise that they would develop flight paths and a comprehensive noise mitigation plan in the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the airport.

“The Government have now approved a 24-hour a day airport with no flight paths and no serious studies into the impacts on people, or on the World Heritage Area,” Ms Templeman said.

“Western Sydney and Blue Mountains

An artist’s impression of what the airport will look like in 2063 are left being treated as second-class citizens compared to people in the east and north of Sydney, with no restrictions on the number of planes that can fly over their homes day and night.”

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, also condemned the Prime Minister’s approval of Western Sydney Airport.

“The Prime Minister has approved an

incomplete Airport Plan which is based on a grossly inadequate EIS and tokenistic community consultation,” Cr Greenhill said.

“The Australian Government has blatantly ignored significant concerns important to the Blue Mountains and western Sydney community, including the aircraft noise, air quality and greenhouse

gases, human health, traffic and transport, airspace architecture and operation and landscape and visual amenity.

“The World Heritage Area listing is not guaranteed and the tourism economy of the Blue Mountains, and indeed NSW, is also at stake.”

But the Government claim that the Western Sydney Airport will deliver real benefits to the western Sydney economy, creating jobs, encouraging investment and ensuring that western Sydney is a source of economic growth for many years to come.

Ms Templeman responded stating that the Blue Mountains community will not be silent about the need for protections from flights from Western Sydney Airport, in spite of the Government’s decision to approve an Airport Plan.

“Whoever puts their hand up to build this airport needs to know that we will be fighting for genuine protections for the Blue Mountains every step of the way,” Ms Templeman said.

Stage 1 of the airport is expected to be operational in the mid-2020s.

A second parallel runway is expected to be required by around 2050.

The airport will generate about 9,000 jobs by the early 2030s.

How to keep kids safe this summer Drowning still leading cause of accidental death of children under five ERIN MAMO

ederal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, has joined forces with Olympic swim coach, Laurie Lawrence, to keep kids safe in pools this summer.

Ms Templeman recently met with the ‘Kids Alive do the Five’ founder to talk about the importance of swim safety and what she can do to make the community more aware.

On average, one child drowns in Australia each week.

Ms Templeman said being that there are many pools within the Blue Mountains, it’s important that people know the steps to prevent the risk of drowning.

“Drowning is the greatest cause of accidental death in children under five in Australia,” Ms Templeman said.

“I urge families to take heed of this tragic reminder, and to ‘Do the Five’ this summer.

“We need to do everything possible to ensure that summer days in the pool are safe and happy ones.”

The ‘Kids Alive do the Five’ program was established in 1988 and educates the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of preschool drowning: 1. Fence the pool;

Mr Lawrence established the water safety program after retiring from the professional swimming circuit where he represented Australia in World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games as a swim coach.

As part of the ‘Kids Alive do the Five’ program Mr Lawrence used to offer a free pantomime show, which during its time visited over 225,000 students Australia-

wide. Although the show no longer runs, schools can now hire the costumes from the pantomime and put on their own show, using the devised skit.

The show explores the tale of Boo, a naughty alien who does not believe in water safety.

One day Boo falls into the pool and he doesn’t know how to swim.

Luckily, Wise Owl and Lifesaver Lil were supervising and knew resuscitation to save him.

Blue Mountains City Council wants to know when Lower Mountains residents will have access to the National Broadband Network (NBN) that is currently being rolled out in the Upper Mountains, from Lawson to Katoomba.

At the Council’s final meeting for the year, Ward 4 Councillor, Darryl Bowling, put forward a motion to the Council suggesting that they write to the Communications Minister seeking clarity on when Lower Mountains residents can expect the new service “The progress of the NBN in Katoomba has been positive but now I want to know when works will start in the Lower Mountains, particularly in Glenbrook and Blaxland,” Cr Bowling said.

“Past reports suggested the work would start in the fourth quarter of 2017. But now it’s looking like it could be 2018.”

The Record can now confirm via a spokesperson from Communications Minister, Mitch Fifield, that residents of the Lower Mountains can expect to see construction begin for the new service as early as June 2017.

“Using fibre to the node technology, construction is due to start between June and December 2017 for residents from Lapstone to Hazelbrook and out to Yellow Rock,” the spokesperson said.

Over 15,000 residents can expect to benefit from the new service which will bring the total number of residents using the NBN in the Blue Mountains to approximately 23,000.

number of the Blue Mountains’ finest restaurants and producers have been recognised in a new book that explores the culinary delights of NSW. Flavours of NSW investigates over a dozen restaurants and producers from the region in its latest publication in the award-winning ‘Flavours Of’ series.

Blue Mountains eateries like Vesta in Blackheath, Restaurant Como at Blaxland, Darley’s Restaurant at Lilianfels Resort & Spa, Josophan’s Fine Chocolates, Lyttleton Stores in Lawson and the Wintergarden at the Hydro Majestic Hotel were just some of the local dining spots that made the edition.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors have found 47 non-compliant and dangerous toys being sold in retailers across the State in the lead-up to Christmas. The toys have now been destroyed. This year’s pre-Christmas blitz saw NSW Fair Trading inspectors visit 746 businesses across NSW and inspect 10,727 individual products, with a particular focus on toys aimed at small children and projectiles. On Monday, January 16, Megalong Books, in conjunction with Mt Victoria Manor, are inviting kids to spend a magical day in the Mountains.

The all-day event will kick off midmorning at 10.30am, with a double-decker bus arriving at Bloom Park in Leura to pick up the kids.

The bus will then travel to Manor House in Mt Victoria where wizardry magic classes will be set up, including potion lessons, a Care of Magical Creatures class with real barn owls, and a chance to ride on Hagrid’s motorbike, a 3-wheeler trike.

Lunch, which will be served in the transformed great hall, is included as part of the cost of the day.

A Quidditch team will also be coming from the University of Western Sydney to teach the kids the tricks and skills behind the game.

Gorman said there will be lots of fun to be had at the event.

“Everyone needs some escapism from their normal day-to-day life,” Ms Gorman said.

“And if you’re a Harry Potter fan, here is your chance to see what going to wizard school might be like.”

Tickets for this Harry Potter extravaganza are $82 per child or $77 per child if more than one is coming from the same family.

Ms Gorman said tickets to the event may serve as a fun and different Christmas present.

“We are sending out letters to children in the mail with an invitation inviting them to the wizard school,” Ms Gorman said.

The age recommendation for the event is six to 13-year-olds.

Some of the proceeds of the day will be used to support the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), a national charity founded in 2005 by members of the Australian book industry.

ILF aims to address children’s literacy levels in remote Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander communities.

Despite the fact that most of the country is winding down, Courts across the country are going full steam ahead with a number of high profile public interest cases being decided upon in the last week.

Firstly, the Supreme Court of NSW found Sydney factory worker, Brendan King, was not entitled to a share of a $40 million Powerball win won by members of a syndicate in his workplace, despite the fact he had been playing the lottery with the group for a number of years.

about $2.7m, argued he had been a part of the syndicate for a very long time, and the only reason he had not contributed to this particular ticket was because syndicate organiser, Robert Adams, had not approached him to make a contribution.

Adams argued there were strict protocols in place that meant syndicate members had to pay in advance and

hold a copy of the winning ticket in order to be included.

Justice John Sacker found the winning syndicate was in fact distinct from previous syndicates, and that Adams bought the winning ticket only using funds he received from the winning syndicate members, with no contribution from King.

In another high profile case, the High Court found Flight Centre guilty of anticompetitive conduct after it was accused of seeking to induce Malaysia Airlines, Emirates and Singapore Airlines from offering international airfares lower than prices it offered directly to consumers.

A majority of the High Court bench held that Flight Centre was attempting to influence flight prices, the result of which would have meant consumers paying more, despite the airlines concerned seemingly willing to offer cheaper flights.

Flight Centre reportedly faces a fine of some $11m as a result, and is a lesson to shop around when looking for international flights.

These two cases indicate how the law quite often interacts with everyday lives, despite sometimes seeming beyond the reach of regular citizens.

n my experience there are more poor leaders than wise leaders. But often the actions and decisions that define those poor leaders, are things that could so easily be remedied if they put themselves in another person’s shoes.

Recently I heard about someone who received a bonus from their boss. It was considered a lovely gesture, until they realised that another employee (on the same pay level and same seniority) had received double the bonus she had. The bonus was not linked to a formal performance incentive, nor was there any explanation given to either employee of the reason for the bonuses.

This boss may have had some ‘logical’ reasons for doing this – and when it boils down to it, the boss is entitled to reward whoever she wants, in whatever way she wants.

However, just because you are ‘entitled’ to do something, doesn’t necessarily mean it is a wise decision.

By giving no explanation, the employees in this situation were left to wonder what the meaning was behind the disparity in bonuses.

An action like this has the potential to cause division and create uncertainty.

Wise leaders operate with transparency and honesty, seeking not to manipulate situations, but where possible, to engineer the best outcomes for everyone. It may involve consulting with stakeholders to involve them in the process, and giving people a platform to raise concerns and ideas. This doesn’t mean that employees and stakeholders have to be privy to all the reasons behind your decisions. But it does mean carefully considering how an action might be interpreted.

Every good leader will have to make tough calls and stick by them, despite backlash.

What those affected will remember, is the way you communicated a decision and your willingness to listen to concerns. There will still be employees who dislike decisions, but they will have far more respect for you if you treat them with dignity, and strive to alleviate any negative consequences. Good leaders consider how they would feel if they were in their employees’ situation.

hile business may slow down around the holiday season, social media activity increases. People have more spare time and spend a decent amount of it browsing their social feeds and shopping online. This is the time when you want to actively post fresh content and engage with your followers.

Schedule your Facebook posts: But don’t over schedule. If you know you are going to be away from your socials, schedule content to automatically post so you don’t have to do it manually. This doesn’t mean that you can disappear from your socials completely – your fans will still continue to engage with you and contact you. Don’t leave them sitting there with no response until you return back to normal trading.

Ensure you post valuable content: Don’t post just for the sake of it. It will not get interaction and will reduce your organic reach, which will only hurt you in the long run.

Advertise: If you haven’t tried social media advertising, now is the high time to do so. You can improve your visibility

during the holidays by paying a certain amount of money and appearing to the news feed of your target audience.

This will not only help you get the best business out of this holiday season, but also boost your number of followers and potential future customers.

Get into the holiday spirit: Add a holiday theme to your platforms to create a fun and festive element to show your followers you are enjoying the season as much as they are. Something as simple as putting a Santa hat on your logo or changing your cover photo can be effective.

Post a special holiday offer: Boost your sales over the coming months by offering coupons valid only during specific holiday times.

Post your best wishes: While you may not be directly marketing your products or services, by wishing your followers a Happy Christmas and New Year you’re positioning your brand as thoughtful, whilst thanking your followers for their support.

Make a list, check it twice: Use your downtime wisely to create a content strategy for 2017.

he new faces of popular kids entertainment group Hi-5 have been announced and two of them hail from the Blue Mountains.

Courtney Clarke, 18, and Siobhan Clifford, 18, are part of the five new cast members that were recently chosen from more than 450 individuals who auditioned to be part of the group.

Siobhan, also known as ‘Shay’ said she is really excited to be joining the Hi-5 cast and is particularly looking forward

to coming home in January to perform in the Mountains.

“We are performing at the Fairmont in January, so we are really excited to be so close to home,” Shay said.

“It’s going to be such a fun and lively show and it will be really special having all of our friends and family there!”

At 18, Shay has just completed her HSC at Winmalee High School.

Courtney, who grew up in Lithgow, graduated high school last year and has just finished a gap year in Cambodia where she taught English at a local primary school.

The two ladies actually already knew each other before the Hi-5 process began and have the same vocal coach in Leura.

The new cast of Hi-5 is now preparing for their first performance together at the children’s segment of Channel Nine’s ‘Carols by Candlelight’ on Christmas Eve. After the carols they will then start their ‘Hi-5 Summer Holiday Show’, which will bring them to the Fairmont.

Since she first appeared on our screens in 2001, Bridget Jones has become one of our favourite romcom characters.

This week she’s back with the release of ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ on DVD and Blu-ray.

In the third film in the ‘Bridget Jones’ franchise Renee Zellweger reprises her role as unlucky-in-love Bridget, but this time the world’s favourite singleton is about to welcome a new addition to her life.

After Bridget breaks up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) she finds herself single once again. To take her mind off things she decides to shift her life’s focus to her friends and her job as a news producer.

Reviews for the film have been positive and it appears that the franchise is looking up after a more negative critical response to 2004’s ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’.

Handy salad idea for the Christmas Day table this year Sick of the same, boring Christmas meals? If you want to try something unique with the family this year, consider this awesome salad!

Manu Feildel is one of our favourite celebrity chefs.

To celebrate the release of his new cookbook More Please! we’re bringing you one of the lovable Frenchman’s delicious recipes to add to the table this Christmas.

Pineapple and Cucumber Salad Serves 4

• 1 golden pineapple • 2 Lebanese (short) cucumbers • 80ml (2½ fl oz/L cup) white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons sugar • ½ teaspoon sea salt • 1 fresh bird’s eye chilli, thinly sliced (optional) • handful of coriander (cilantro) leaves, coarsely chopped, plus extra sprigs to garnish (optional) Less of a salad and more of a palate cleanser, you can serve this with almost any curry or rich dish. The trick here is to achieve a nice balance of salty, sweet and sour, with

a hint of chilli, if desired.

1. Cut off a generous slice from the top and bottom of the pineapple. Stand the pineapple upright, then work your way around, carefully cutting off the skin. Like the top and the bottom, the core can be very woody, so it’s best to remove it. Cut the rest of the pineapple (the sweetest and juiciest part) into rough 1cm dice.

2. Peel the skin off the cucumbers and cut them in half lengthways. Scoop out the seeds with a teaspoon or cut them out with a small, sharp knife. Cut the re-

maining flesh into cubes a similar size to the pineapple.

3. Put the pineapple, cucumber, vinegar, sugar and salt in a medium bowl, add the chilli and coriander and mix well with your hands. Taste to make sure you have a balance of sweet, sour and salty – adjust the flavours if necessary.

4. Serve at room temperature, garnished with coriander sprigs, if you like. If you’re making this ahead of time in warm weather, store it in the fridge until needed, then bring it back to room temperature to serve.

e all like to have a nice bottle or two on the table for family and friends joining us for Christmas Day. And in anticipation of the big day ourselves, we started the month with a bit of early shelf-gazing, inspired by the fact we plan to offer a different wine to suit each course come Christmas Day, rather than just one white or one red to see through the whole meal.

We also set a price target of “$10 or so” for each choice to see if we could contain costs without sacrificing quality and flavour. And remarkably we came home within budget, and more than impressed with our purchases.

And if you too are looking to offer a different wine appropriate to each course this Christmas, and not break the bank doing so, here’s what we chose in our test run.

For welcome drinks as guests arrive, bubbly is an obvious. We opted for Yellowglen’s special Festive Season “Yellow Glitter Pack,” a nice crisp, elegant and dry fizz that bursts with melon, pineapple and citrus flavours.

If seafood’s your option this Christmas, at just $10 is McGuigan Wines’ Black Label 2016 Chardonnay. With Hunter Valley master, Neil McGuigan behind this one it’s an ideal match with seafood.

And for traditionalists for whom turkey is the only option on Christmas Day, from the Riverina comes a 2016 Shiraz under the renowned Calabria Family Richland label (pictured). A recommended $11, this one’s full of varietal fruit and spicy black pepper flavours that go so well with that turkey, baked veggies and gravy.

And finally, for those with still enough room for Christmas pudding, put a bottle of Penfolds Club Reserve Tawny Port on the table with this.

On average, Australians gain between two to three kilograms over the Christmas and New Year period.

Now a couple of kilograms doesn’t sound like a big deal, but increasing weight quickly through poor food choices can often take up to three months to get off.

Our average calorie intake on Christmas Day is 7000 calories, which is over three times our recommended daily intake.

Let this Christmas season be the year you take control of your health.

Here are five helpful tips for staying healthy over the Christmas and New Year period: Exercise in the morning Getting your exercise done early in the morning means that you beat the heat as well as ensure you fit your training in.

If your training is done early, you can spend the rest of the day being festive.

One beer for one water

Make sure that we limit our days that we have alcohol to ensure we aren’t including this in our everyday regime.

Also stay hydrated with a glass of water between drinks.

Snack wisely before leaving the house Have a healthy snack before heading to your Christmas festivities, that way you won’t overindulge when you get there.

Don’t set goals It’s unrealistic to set weight loss goals over the Christmas period, however set your goal to maintain your current weight.

This way you can enjoy the festive season without the extra baggage at the end.

Travel and train Take advantage of the exercise facilities whilst travelling. Whether it be the beautiful coastline or the motel gym, take advantage of a different view and continue your training regime whilst away on holidays.

Active presents are a great way to encourage family members to start their health journey, whether it be a fitness tracker, fitness watch or active gym clothes.

Fitness gadgets are the latest craze so if you need a last minute gift idea – jump on board!

Social media plays such a big role in sourcing fashion inspiration, and I recently got the chance to speak with Kim from @kimdvniels on Instagram, a unique budding young fashion stylist.

Alyce: Hi Kim, I absolutely love your fashion Instagram! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Kim: Thanks, Alyce! Well I’m an aspiring celebrity stylist from Perth. I’m currently studying the fashion business to gain some knowledge about how to market and brand myself.

Alyce: Your sense of style is really inspiring, where do you see yourself fitting in the fashion industry, what are your goals?

Kim: Wow, thank you, I appreciate that!

I want to style celebrities and models because I feel that I can completely transform their image. My main goal is to make someone feel amazing in their own skin, which I do through style. I also would love to get into creative directing of editorial photoshoots and movie costumes.

Alyce: Can you describe your style in three words?

Kim: Bold, experimental and classic.

Alyce: Who are your biggest fashion icons/influencers?

Kim: Rihanna, Aaliyah and my mother in the 90s.

Alyce: How do you stay up-to-date with current fashion trends in such a busy, fast-paced world?

Kim: I like to look through the most recent runway collections on Vogue, but I also pay close attention to creative people on Twitter and Instagram.

Alyce: Are there any trends right now we should be trying?

Kim: I definitely recommend trying the lace up trend! There’s so many skirts and pants with lacing detail that makes such a big statement in any outfit. PVC jackets and trench coats for the coming winter are also a must.

Alyce: What are your fashion tips for this upcoming party season?

Kim: Lace detail dresses are a must, along with a leather look mini skirt! These can be dressed up with pumps or lace detailed sandals. It’s such a simple yet easy statement to rock.

Alyce: How do you put together a perfect outfit?

Kim: I like to start with the basics and then make a statement with accessories or shoes! I encourage clients to buy things that they think they’d never usually wear because it forces them to style it and make it work for them. It’s all about risk taking!

Alyce: What is one fashion fail you see women struggle with?

Kim: I’m sorry to say ladies but the clear Perspex boots must go! It’s almost impossible to ignore the fact that they fog up when it’s too warm, let’s leave it in 2016.

Alyce: What is your favourite Westfield Penrith store to shop at?

lenbrook retiree Bob Hector has been given the title of Minor Singles Champion from his local bowls club.

Earlier this month, the Panthers Glenbrook Bowling Club held its annual presentation night where Hector walked away with the prestigious award as well as a few others.

Hector said he was very fortunate to take home the gong.

“It’s pretty hard to win the Minor Singles Award, so many people want to win it,” he said.

The Minor Singles is a knock-out round of bowls where players have to beat as many people as possible to get to the final.

Hector also walked away with awards for placing second in the Men’s 4s event, the Men’s Pairs event and the Mixed Pairs event.

The 65-year-old said he felt very lucky to win four awards in one go.

“I’ve won before but not this many at once,” he said.

Having recently retired, Hector believes his new found freedom may be the reason why he did so well in this year’s competition.

“I retired from being an Electrical Fitter last year and it’s given me a lot more time to play bowls and work on my form,” he said.
