Hour of darkness for a bright future Lights off! Blue Mountains residents encouraged to take part in Earth Hour this Saturday night ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains residents will be called upon to turn off their lights this Saturday night in support of a brighter future for the planet.

In its 10th year, Earth Hour is now celebrated in over 170 countries and aims to support low pollution and a clean energy future.

Launched by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Australia, this year’s ‘Earth Hour’ theme is children and future.

With schools and pre-schools across Australia being encouraged to take part in the annual event, Blaxland Pre-school plan to have a pyjama day for the children that attend their school this Friday, March 24.

Director Deidre Wilde said that the pre-school’s philosophy embraces environmental education, so it is important to acknowledge the annual event.

“We will have lights off for the day and use lamps if needed,” Ms Wilde said.

“I think it’s important for the future sustainability of the world that we live in, that we educate the next generation.”

She said initiatives like Earth Hour enhance what children already know and

learn about improving the environment locally and globally.

“Our children have a very good understanding about the environment and when we have conversations about how we conserve energy or conserve water they have the answers as we are learning about it all year round,” she said.

CEO of WWF Australia, Dermot O’Gorman, said Australians should feel proud of the role they’ve played in starting a decade-long, global conversation about climate change.

“It’s a great Australian success story,” Mr O’Gorman said.

“What started as an Aussie movement has grown into a global phenomenon for climate change.

“We have seen a huge number of positive steps towards a brighter future in the decade since Earth Hour started, proof that one person can make a difference.”

Saving lives one strand at a time Big hearted youngster throws support behind blood cancer research by shaving locks for charity ERIN MAMO

fter growing his locks for three whole years, Sam Attard’s big moment finally arrived last Friday when the youngster shaved his head to help find a cure for blood cancer.

The 11-year-old Blaxland local, who showed maturity well beyond his years, said he chose to shave his hair because he wanted to help save lives and support families living with the disease.

“I have been growing my hair for three years just so I can shave it off to raise money to help people living with cancer,” the primary school student said.

“I just want to make sure everyone has an equal chance at life.

“I am lucky enough to have people support me and my hair will grow back.”

Sam’s mother, Rebecca Hackney, said as someone living with Autism, ADHD and learning difficulties, her son is no stranger to hardship.

Ms Hackney said Sam has been asking her for the last two years to shave his head as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’, which takes place every year in March, but she was hesitant.

“I thought he was a little young to

participate until this year. Shaving your head is a big commitment and Sam would not have been happy just colouring it,” Ms Hackney said.

“He has the biggest heart and I can see how proud he is to be raising money for this great cause.”

Blood cancer is currently the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.

Every day another 35 people will be diagnosed with the condition.

Those taking part in the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ make a difference by funding research that will mean more people survive blood cancer, while improving their quality of life.

So far, Sam has raised $364 and is hopeful he can raise more money before he hands over the proceeds to the Leukaemia Foundation in June.

Around 9.30am on Monday, March 13, a 45-year-old man fell one-storey through a plate glass window onto pavers at a quarry in Winmalee.

The man reportedly lay injured for at least an hour before a passer-by heard his calls of distress and contacted emergency services.

He suffered facial, head and potential spinal injuries after falling an estimated three metres.

He was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

At around 8am on Wednesday, March 8, a 78-year-old female from Lithgow parked her Mercedes on Katoomba Street, Katoomba.

On return to her vehicle at 9.30am, she found that an unknown person had rubbed bread and meat over the roof of her vehicle.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Knife wielding man arrested after fight breaks out

Burglar gains entry through open front door

About 12.30am on Sunday, March 12, a 23-year-old Katoomba man was involved in a fight where he pulled out a knife and threatened another man.

The accused was walking with a large group of people through the railway underpass of Katoomba Train Station when they were approached by another group.

A male from the second group asked the accused for a cigarette and threatened him.

It is alleged that the accused then pulled out a nine centimetre knife and held it next to the initiators leg. A witness then intervened and a fight broke out.

A number of people were injured, including a 20-year-old male from Bullaburra, who sustained an injury to his head as a result of being knocked to the concrete pavement.

Police attended the scene and placed the accused under arrest.

Between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday, March 12, an unknown person entered a house on Neale Street, Katoomba through an open front door.

The person then stole an Apple iPhone 5S before leaving the house.

Thief targets Springwood Public School, steals cash On Monday, March 6 at around 11pm, it is alleged an unknown person gained entry into a classroom at Springwood Public School by manipulating a locked door.

While inside the room the person stole small amounts of cash located within photo money envelopes before fleeing the scene.

CCTV images may have captured the incident and Police are investigating.

alley Heights resident Kathryn Temple was acknowledged with a Highly Commended Award at the ‘Women of the West Awards’ last week.

Last Friday, Ms Temple competed against eight other nominees in the ‘Community’ category at the awards, which were hosted

by Western Sydney University, for her significant contribution to the lives of families in the Blue Mountains.

A long-standing teacher at Western Sydney TAFE, Ms Temple was nominated for the awards by her colleagues for the work she did with her local community during and after the 2013 Winmalee bushfires.

Ms Temple said when the devastating bushfires ripped through her community in 2013 she simply could not sit back and watch without trying to help in some way.

“As a Landscape Designer and Horticulturist, I worked with residents in Winmalee who had lost their gardens as well as their homes,” Ms Temple said.

“We basically went out to see what we could do to help, what plants could be saved and how we could help the residents move forward.”

While Ms Temple narrowly missed out on winning the major award at last week’s event, which went to Jenny Bombardieri who works for a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with a disability, Ms Temple said she was just honoured to have been nominated.

“I was blown away to even get this far,” she said.

“Competing against the likes of the Mayor of Hills Shire Council and a Chief Executive of a disability service provider is an honour within itself.”

Western Sydney University Professor, Denise Kirkpatrick, said the University was proud to host the Women of the West Awards, and shine a light on the many women who are doing great things to enrich the lives of those in western Sydney.

“Once again, we had an outstanding group of Women of the West finalists this year, who are all making their mark on the region and helping to make our community a better place,” Professor Kirkpatrick said.

Ms Temple, who is now working with families affected by the 2013 bushfires to re-design their gardens, was awarded a grant of $1000 to put towards the community.

Local Blaxland artist opens her doors Corinne Loxton set to exhibit her latest body of work to the public at her Blaxland studio next month ERIN MAMO

ocal artist Corinne Loxton is opening her studio to the public next month.

The landscape painter, who is based in Blaxland, will host two open days on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9 to exhibit her latest body of work, ‘In Progress’.

Ms Loxton said the collection aims to establish a connection with its viewers and to inspire them to develop a deep connection with the natural world.

“I have always loved mountains and their changing atmospheric conditions,” Ms Loxton said.

“As a child I lived near mountains and water and learned that to create art in response was life-giving.

“Art enables you and me to know and cherish our shared humanity and to see the world with fresh eyes.”

The South African-born artist has been painting and exhibiting her work in galleries in Australia and internationally since the early 90s.

Since then, she has won a number of awards and residencies including the Blackbird Art Prize in Sydney, the Elioth

Gruner Art Prize in Sydney and Residency Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.

In 2014, Ms Loxton was also a finalist in the NSW Parliament Plein Air Art Prize.

Currently, the artist shares her expertise and passion by hosting workshops that cater to all abilities, from beginners to advanced, in her studio at Blaxland.

The lower Blue Mountains local said the longer she continues to live in the WorldHeritage area the more her paintings reflect the dramatic land-forms that make up the Blue Mountains.

She said she particularly enjoys being at one with nature and being surrounded by people who have common interests and values.

“Having a studio in the Blue Mountains provides the most wonderful opportunities to connect with nature and likeminded people,” she said.

Ms Loxton will open her studio from 11am to 4pm on April 8 and 9.

The open days are free events but a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

love running my own business – and shudder at the thought of working for an employer again! But there are times I wonder: if I knew then, what I know now, would I do it all again? If I were to pen a letter to my younger self, here are the truths I would write: It’s nerve-racking You will experience great joy and thrills, but in between you will be anxious, nervous, stressed and fearful about the future. But use these as your motivation and learn quickly that you can use this nervous energy to propel you forward.

Remember not to get bogged down in a bad day, but use it as a learning opportunity.

Not all advice is good Most people who are not in business will advise you to give up, telling you it’s not worth the stress. But because they haven’t been in your position, they won’t understand that for you, the benefits generally far outweigh the negatives.

Talk to people who have been through the same stage as you and can give you valuable advice for solving your current

problem. Those same mentors will realign your vision for the future and show you what is possible.

Change is inevitable And in fact, you should expect it. If not, your business won’t be flexible and won’t be able to easily change when required.

Have goals and outcomes to aim for, and be proud of the business you have built. But be prepared to change direction and accept that your business may look different to what you envisioned.

Perfection is not a requirement As much as you’ll want to spend extra time on some projects so that they meet your perfectionist standards, you will need to learn the hard truth that ‘time is money’.

There is an art to knowing when to launch a new idea, and when to keep honing it. This doesn’t mean you need to aim for mediocrity. But it does mean learning the difference between what matters and what doesn’t. Vince Lombardi once said: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence�.

ow many times have you been asked “What do you do?� when meeting someone? The typical response is “I’m an X� and maybe we embellish a little with how we do it, or what we consider our unique value proposition to be. These introductions may be at a networking meeting (one-on-one or in front of the group), a training workshop or when introducing ourselves to a new contact in business or in pleasure.

These introductions can get quite tedious, when you’ve heard four times at that event, “I’m an accountant, I do tax returns and BAS statements for business owners� – all a ‘what’ statement. Yes, the question is answered, but did it trigger anything but, “oh gosh another one?�.

How could the accountant, or you more importantly, have handled the question differently?

There is a famous TED talk by Simon Sinek, ‘Start With Why’, which is worth viewing. It is key to note that we are triggered by emotion and gut reaction, so your introduction must spark emotional interest.

By addressing the why and how more than the what, we can elicit interest.

This can be done other ways like communicating a short story where you’ve helped a client, but if in doubt this approach is great.

Lukas Gilkey has a less known video on the ‘Elevator Pitch’.

Elevator Pitch gets its name from being a ‘sales pitch’ that you’d do in an elevator if you met the Chief Executive of a target company while catching the lift.

It must be short and do enough to grab attention. Lukas also focuses on the Simon Sinek ‘Start With Why’ approach but concludes with a question, which is such a different approach, and can only encourage further engagement!

Being different and passionate definitely stands out at an event.

An example of the why, how, what with a question to encourage further conversation may be: “Clients love that I can restore clarity and passion for their business, by addressing barriers in their way, through providing quality tailored business advice. How are you feeling about your business?�.

Back in my advising days, I once spoke to a prospective client whose attitude towards investment risk still astounds me to this day. He had come to see me on the suggestion of the Lending Manager, with whom he had arranged an appointment immediately after mine. This client had $15k in superannuation and was interested to look at alternative funds.

After going through the usual perfunctory tasks of a financial planner, I ended up suggesting to him a standard, long-term portfolio comprised mainly

of growth assets, such as local and global shares. By the way, you didn’t need to be Warren Buffett to make a recommendation like this considering his funds would be locked into super for at least another 30 years.

I then sought his opinion on the strategy. Unbelievably, his immediate response was, “that’s too risky, shares are just like gambling, I pre-

fer cash or property”.

Although I was certainly surprised at this response, I felt it necessary to counter his argument in a factual manner, and I did so with care and in detail. Alas, it was to no avail, as he seemed convinced that share investment ranked alongside betting on a fly crawling up a wall.

It suddenly dawned on me that nothing was going to alter his opinion, so I suggested he think about it and get back to me if he changed his mind. As we walked to the door of my office, I enquired as to why he was seeing the Lending Manager. “I’m signing up for a loan to purchase a home unit, off the plan, for $340k!,” was his excited reply. “Isn’t that a bit risky?”

I suggested. “Not one bit,” he said, adding “you can’t lose money buying property”. (I am sure he also wanted to add, “you idiot”.)

Wow, talk about putting a capitol ‘P’ in paradox! On one hand, the bloke had no trouble committing to borrow $340k for a totally unbuilt home unit, but saw a carefully selected, professionally managed $15k share investment, as being riskier than a ‘south face’ ascent of Annapurna.

I will leave the moral of this story in your hands.

Dr Brown cited his busy commitments hosting his other shows ‘I’m A Celebrity’ and ‘The Living Room’ as the reason for his departure. Channel Ten isn’t willing to can the show yet though, with the network keen to recast the coveted TV vet position.

Ê HBO has announced that the highly anticipated seventh season of ‘Game of Thrones’ will premiere on July 16. By the time July rolls around, fans would’ve waited more than a year to see what happens next. In other news, pop star Ed Sheeran will appear in the upcoming season as a special guest star. Ê Last year’s winner of ‘The X Factor’ Isaiah Firebrace has been announced as Australia’s representative at this year’s ‘Eurovision Song Contest’. Experiment in the kitchen and try making your own pizza Everyone loves pizza and we all have different tastes, so making your own can not only ensure you get what you want, but it’s lots of fun too...

Due to its hot, cheesy and highly customisable nature, it’s no wonder that pizza rates pretty high on many people’s favourite foods list.

While ordering takeaway is great for those nights when you just can’t be bothered, making your own pizza is quick, easy and allows you to experiment with different flavour combinations.

The Base When it comes to pizza bases there’s plenty of options, whether you like a traditional base or something a little different.

Lebanese bread is a great choice for a thin and crispy base, while adventurous home cooks can try making their own dough at home.

For those that are coeliac or gluten intolerant there’s also plenty of gluten free options on the market.

The Sauce If you’re a bit over the traditional tomato or BBQ sauce then it’s time to get creative.

Pesto makes a delicious base as the flavour from the basil works perfectly

with pizza, while hummus is a great option if you’re after a creamy Mediterranean style pizza.

If you’re an olive fan try using an olive tapenade, or if sauce isn’t your thing try a base with crushed garlic, herbs and a little olive oil.

The Toppings When it comes to toppings we’ve all got our favourites. While pepperoni, onions, capsicum and mushrooms tend to feature regularly on pizza menus, there’s really no limit to the combinations you can create.

For something a little different try thinly sliced potato, pumpkin, asparagus, pine nuts and avocado or try rocket on a

finished pizza to add a little freshness to your meal and help get you closer to your daily vegetable target.

The Cheese Mozzarella and cheddar are generally the go-to favourites for pizza, but feta and ricotta also make great cheesy additions.

When shopping keep an eye out for pizza mixes which contain a blend of popular pizza cheeses, or if you’re lactose intolerant or vegan look out for dairy-free cheeses at your local supermarket or health food store.

Cooking If you haven’t already, try using a pizza stone, which helps to heat the underside of the pizza to achieve a nice crispy base.

e’re not sure how they do it, but open a bottle ottle of Dal Zotto Pinot Grigio from the King Valley alley in the foothills of Victoria’s Alps, and you u get the impression you’re treating yourself to something hing straight out of a little part of rustic rural Italy.

Their latest Pinot Grigio, from vintage 2016, is just such uch a drop from this fascinating family, who as pioneers off the King Valley are now somewhat of an institution, having ving started off growing tobacco, then moving into contract tract grape-growing in 1987, and ultimately going on to then create their own-label premium quality wines soon after. fter.

And although now retired, patriarch Otto who migrated ated here from the cool climate Veneto region of Italy, is still very much a prominent character regularly seen around und the Dal Zotto winery, along with his wife Elena. And doubtless Otto still has a bit of quiet input into the business that’s run these days by sons Michael, who is Chief Winemaker and CEO, and Christian who heads up Sales and Marketing.

Do yourself a favour and get hold of a bottle or two wo of their 2016 Pinot Grigio, a drop that on opening exudes udes loads of lovely pear-fruit, fennel and honeysuckle aromas, mas, and on drinking fills the mouth with follow-through ough fresh fruit and a touch of nuttiness.

This is a great drop, particularly at $19 a bottle, with one of our favourite Pinot Grigio matches, crab or prawn awn salad, or do as the Dal Zotto boys suggest, and put it on the table with crispy skin salmon and Asian greens.

he NRL has admitted the Sydney Roosters should never have been awarded their match-winning try against Penrith at Pepper Stadium on Saturday night.

The Panthers went down 14-12 in a blockbuster game in front of more than 11,000 fans in wet conditions.

But Michael Gordon’s 73rd minute try, which ultimately proved the matchwinner, emerged as the major talking point out of the game after referees boss Tony Archer admitted a pass went forward in the lead-up to the try.

“From the vision you can see that the touch judge is in good position to rule on the pass,” Archer said.

“After reviewing all the available angles and slowing the play up, I have determined that the pass is forward.

“It’s my expectation that the referees should have ruled that way.”

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin refused to target the referees in his post-match press conference despite a night of controversy involving the officials.

got beaten by points on the scoreboard but I thought it was a really good effort and something I’ll be able to build on,” Griffin said.

“I thought we were very unlucky... but I was extremely happy with the performance.”

Griffin called the performance “courageous”.

“Without being technically correct it was a really tough performance that nearly got us the points,” he said.

“I thought tonight was better than last week and last week was better than the first week so even though it’s heartbreaking not to get the reward tonight we are building on our performances.”

Penrith copped an injury blow in the game with James Fisher-Harris suffering a fractured cheekbone, ruling him out for the next few weeks.

The Panthers return to Pepper Stadium this Friday night to take on the Newcastle Knights in the NRL’s new 6pm timeslot.

Officials are hoping a big crowd will attend the game even though the timeslot is not friendly to commuters or those working outside the local area.

Both Penrith and Newcastle have won one match from their first three games to start the season.

Sport Local basketballer shoots for her dreams after invitations NATHAN TAYLOR

alented teenager Ella Edwards is one of the hardest working and dedicated young sport stars around.

Five days a week you’ll find the 13-yearold Faulconbridge basketballer hitting the hardwood playing for a number of different teams around the Blue Mountains and Penrith areas.

“I play for Glenmore Park, reps for Blue Mountains, a school team as well as local competitions in Blaxland and Katoomba – I only have two nights off a week,” Ella told the Record.

The Year 8 Penrith Christian School student has only been playing basketball for four years after one of her ex-teachers introduced her to the sport.

Despite her relatively short amount of time in the game, Ella simply can’t get enough of shooting hoops.

“My former teacher was really passionate and enthusiastic about basketball, and that quickly rubbed off on me,” Ella said.

“I like playing with my friends and the social aspect of it but I also enjoy competing as well.”

And it seems Ella’s competitiveness and natural talent is paying dividends after

she was approached by Princeton University in the United States to train with their players and coaching staff in an upcoming aspiring athletes camp.

Ella was bestowed the opportunity after a scout in the US spotted her playing online.

“My mum got an email from this scout from the NCSA (National Collegiate Scouting Association), who have a website where athletes can upload videos of themselves playing, for colleges to see,” Ella explained.

“One of the coaches from Princeton emailed one of my coaches asking if I was able to come to camp at Princeton University in their school holidays.”

With her dream to play College basketball in the US one day, Ella jumped at the opportunity to see what playing in the American College system would eventually be like.

“I’ve been told the style of play in the US is very different and much quicker, so I’m keen to see how different it is while, at the same time, learning new skills,” the shooting guard said.

“I want to play basketball for a long time – College basketball would be great but I’d certainly like to make a career out of it.”

Ella will fly to the US for the three-day camp in June.

t Columba’s student, Ryan Hackney, will travel to Hobart next month as part of the Under 19s Australian Cricket team.

The 17-year-old recently competed in the Under 19s National Championships in Adelaide and did so well that he was selected to play for Australia in their next game against Sri Lanka.

Hackney, who has been playing cricket since he was 10, said he is excited about the opportunity to play for his country.

“I’ve never been to Hobart, so this will be a good experience,” Hackney said.

“I know the nerves will start to kick in as it gets closer though.”

The high school student, who started out at Springwood Cricket Club, now plays in first grade for Penrith Cricket Club.

In preparation for the Tassie game, Hackney is training everyday and trying to master all of the technical aspects of the game.

“I’m doing fitness training, gym sessions to build strength, stretching, one-on-one training with my coach, batting practice and fielding practice,” he said.

The Australian team will play Sri Lanka in Hobart from April 4.
