Residents left in the dark over NBN Forum hears of major concerns surrounding roll-out of high speed Internet in the Mountains ERIN MAMO

ver 200 residents from the Upper Mountains came to the National Broadband Network Forum last Thursday night to voice their concerns about the new Internet service.

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman and representatives from NBN Co and Telstra meet with residents from Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls, Bullaburra and Lawson, where the service is currently being rolled out.

Ms Templeman said the large turnout, and the volume of questions asked at the forum, made it clear that Mountains residents are unhappy and dissatisfied with the services they are getting.

“It is evident that Blue Mountains residents are unhappy with the rollout and want fibre to the premises, rather than fibre to the node,” Ms Templeman said.

“But given that right now they have only fibre to the node, at the very least they want it to be functional.”

Forum attendees raised a variety of issues, including ‘drop outs’ in service, speeds lower than those guaranteed in their plan, connection problems and bad customer service experiences.

Residents said they had evidence that they are receiving speeds below those guaranteed by NBN Co and their service providers, and that the outdated copper network and overloaded nodes are to blame.

It also emerged that a switch to NBN may leave people without vital access to a phone or Internet when the power goes out.

Telstra representatives present at the forum said they will now work with Ms Templeman and the community to sort through some of the issues that the residents are experiencing.

To do this they have committed to implementing pop-up shops temporarily in the Upper Mountains where residents can go to get help and advice about their service so that they don’t have to travel to Penrith or Lithgow.

Ms Templeman said she also plans to speak to the Shadow Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, about the service in the Mountains, and will be making the views of residents very clear in the Parliament.

lue Mountains residents need to accept that the new western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek will be built, but it doesn’t mean they should give up the fight.

Mayor Mark Greenhill was scathing of the Australian Government last week following its approval of the airport.

“Astonishingly, the Minister for Environment and Energy has approved an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for an airport with unknown flight paths,” he said.

“How is this even possible? It is ridiculous in the extreme.”

The Mayor has a point – the full story must be known before any sort of approval is given.

The airport will be built, and there will be impacts on the Mountains, but the question is how big those impacts become.

The airport at Badgerys Creek will be one of the most significant infrastructure projects in western Sydney’s history.

We’ll need to accept it, but the Mountains must be protected in the process.

A new look for Blaxland town centre Locals urged to have their say on future of Blaxland town centre amid development of new master plan ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains City Council wants the community to have their say on the future of Blaxland town centre.

Council is developing a master plan to guide the future direction, planning and improvements of the town centre for the next 15 to 20 years and is inviting residents to be a part of it.

A drop-in community workshop will be held on Saturday, November 26 at Blaxland Community Centre, where community members can voice what they would like to see in the future town centre.

The workshop will be family friendly, with interactive material available for viewing and Council staff on hand to answer questions.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said it is important that Council hear from the community in the early stage of the master planning process.

“I encourage Blaxland and lower Mountains residents and business owners to share their ideas and views with Council on what a future Blaxland town centre could look like,” he said.

The current town centre hosts an IGA supermarket, Blaxland Tavern, a butcher,

florist, fruit and vegetable shop, bakery and other more specialised stores, many running parallel to the Great Western Highway.

Blaxland local Glenda Browne said she feels like the current town centre caters to most of her shopping needs but could do with an upgrade.

“I do most of my shopping at IGA and the fruit and vegetable store,” Ms Browne said.

“I’m very happy with both of these stores and definitely wouldn’t want to see either of them go.

“I do think there is a lack of a centre though; I’d like to see it as more of a whole where people can gather together if there is an event on.”

Ms Browne said she thinks the centre could also benefit from some kind of business that provides activities for teens and young adults in the area.

The drop-in community workshop will be held at Sharon Burridge Hall, Blaxland Community Centre from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, November 26.

All of the information gathered from the workshop will be considered in the development of a master plan document, which will then be placed on display for community comment in February 2017.

“It makes sense”: bid for Fire HQ Council resolves to write to Baird, Doyle in a push to get NSW RFS headquarters moved closer to home ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains could soon be the new home of the NSW Rural Fire Service headquarters.

Councillor Chris Van der Kley put forward a motion at last Tuesday’s monthly Council meeting suggesting that Council write to the State Government seeking a commitment to relocate the RFS headquarters to the Blue Mountains.

“I know it’s a long shot,” Cr Van der Kley said.

“But the State Government committed to de-centralising government agencies, so I just want to let them know that we’re interested and in full support of the re-location of agencies to the Blue Mountains.”

In 2011 the State Government committed to a ‘decade of decentralisation’, which aimed to improve regional economic development in NSW. In 2012, the Government appointed the NSW Decentralisation Taskforce, which reviewed policies and committed to relocating public sector jobs and agencies out of the Sydney CBD and into more regional areas.

forward at the Council meeting after attending the Annual Local Government Conference last month in Wollongong.

At the conference, both Forbes Shire and Parkes Shire councils proposed moving the headquarters to regional NSW. Cr Van der Kley said relocating the headquarters to the Blue Mountains would be a more suitable idea.

“We are one of the most bushfire prone areas in the state,” Cr Van der Kley said.

“If the State Government is going to de-centralise their agencies and re-locate them, it makes sense that the RFS headquarters are moved out here.

“I think moving the headquarters to the Blue Mountains would be a major benefit to the area in many ways.”

The motion was passed unanimously at the Council meeting and a letter will now be written to the State Government.

Council also plans to write to the State Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, requesting her support on the matter.

The NSW Rural Fire Service headquarters is currently based at Lidcombe.

In addition, the RFS has District Fire Control Centres, Regional Offices, Customer Service Centres and Operational and Mitigation Support Services in various regions throughout NSW.

Startling stats show true cost of homelessness ERIN MAMO

omelessness across the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury has cost the public health system almost $250,000 in the last six months alone.

Wentworth Community Housing revealed the startling statistic at their recent community briefing where they presented the facts and findings from their latest on-the-ground survey.

Earlier this month, Wentworth took to the streets of the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury to identify and record people experiencing homelessness in the area as part of their registry week.

Chief Executive Officer, Stephen McIntyre, said the survey findings showed not only the significant social and health challenges of homelessness, but also the enormous economic cost to the community.

“The cost of $250,000 to the health system over the last six months relates to the people we surveyed,” Mr McIntyre said.

“If we also take into account the people we found but couldn’t survey, this cost would be significantly greater.”

During registry week, 75 volunteers

visited over 70 locations, including cars, parks, riverbanks, drop-in centres, train stations, refuges, stairwells , carparks and bushland.

The project surveyed 78 respondents including 66 individuals and 12 families.

Forty-four people across the three local government areas were identified but not surveyed because they either declined or couldn’t be woken up.

Mr McIntyre believes community collaboration on housing solutions and support for people experiencing homelessness would reduce the financial burden on the health system, and most importantly, be successful in ending homelessness in the region.

“The cost to government of homelessness is greater than the cost of providing permanent supportive housing, and ending homelessness,” Mr McIntyre told the Record.

The Heading Home project will now be calling on the broader community, from business owners to community service providers, to help find solutions to put an end to homelessness and people living rough.

In particular the service will be working towards a housing first solution, with wrap-around support services for those who need it.

Culture night organised to help African children ERIN MAMO

he Dehwa Mission with St Hilda’s Church in Katoomba is holding a fundraiser next month to raise money for children in need in Liberia, Africa.

On Saturday, December 17, Dehwa will host an African culture night where members of the Blacktown Liberian community will perform in a singing, dancing and instrumental spectacular.

Meridith Southern, Co-Founder of Dehwa Mission, said the fundraiser is to raise money for a mission trip to Pynetown and Greenville, Liberia, where children are in desperate need of help.

“The population in Pynetown is 90 per cent youth, children who are raising children,” Ms Southern said.

“They don’t have clean water to drink, healthcare or education and are unable to take care of themselves, let alone their families.”

One of the focuses of the mission’s 2017 trip is to finish the school that they started building on their last trip to Pynetown earlier this year.

Ms Southern said the mission is also hoping to plant seeds on two acres of land they have purchased so that the local

community can then make a profit, and to build two new wells so they have clean drinking water.

“This will be the mission’s third trip and we have a lot of big plans and things we want to achieve,” Ms Southern said.

Each of the mission workers travelling to Liberia will be paying for their own transport and accommodation costs and the money raised at the culture night will be purely for projects.

The mission is hoping to raise $5,000 at the fundraising event next month.

Ms Southern said she has always held a special place in her heart for Africa and the children there.

“I got involved with helping these local communities in Africa through my church initially, because I wanted to do something to give back,” Ms Southern said.

“My husband and I, we really want to teach our son to learn how to do that and to leave a legacy.”

The African culture night will be held at 68 Katoomba Street, Katoomba from 7pm on Saturday, December 17.

Tickets are $30 for an adult, $20 for a pensioner and $5 for a child.

So what about all the other financial planners giving advice? The majority of the advice industry divides itself into two main areas.

There are planners who

provide advice under an ‘umbrella’ licence from a large institution. Being licensed is expensive and onerous to comply with on an ongoing basis. To avoid this, planners wishing to be self employed, can utilise the administration services of a large institution and in return, yes you guessed it, they recommend that institution’s products. Our big four banks actually have numerous brand names spread between them. Planners entering these arrangements are tied to recommending product from the owning institution.

This leaves probably by far the biggest group of advisers; those who are salaried and employed by one of the big four banks directly. Often referred to as a distribution channel, these ‘guys’ are totally restricted in what they can offer clients. But the banks are like any other branded product outlet. Try asking for KFC at McDonald’s; so don’t be surprised that you won’t get CBA products at ANZ. So if you want advice from someone who can claim to be independent, you will need to search carefully.

Financial planners now have a legal obligation to provide advice that will be in the ‘best interests of their client’.

arketing is one of the first things any new business has to tackle – and it is an ongoing strategy for all businesses.

Most of the time, when we think of ‘marketing’ strategies, it is things like advertising, social media, billboards, direct mail/email, brochures and so on.

All of those are what I term ‘external marketing’: they are all ways to promote your business to potential customers in an attempt to convert them to paying customers. Careful and measured attention should be spent on these strategies as most of us don’t have an unlimited marketing budget, and we want to get the most value for our dollars.

But have you considered how important your ‘internal marketing’ is? By this, I am referring to the way you continue to ‘market’ yourself to current customers, clients and stakeholders. Your business could have award-winning advertisements, and promotions across every form of media showcasing your amazing product or service. However, all of this is pointless if the experience your customer has

Your employees significantly determine this perception and experience. If you have an employee who acts contrary to the mission, values, practices and policies of your business, it will be this interaction that shapes your customer’s opinions. ‘Word of mouth’ marketing is the most powerful form of advertising: if my friend tells me a company is great, I am far more inclined to try it than if an advertisement tells me the same.

Conversely, if my friend tells me about their bad experience, I am highly unlikely to become a customer, and my friend is also highly likely to tell many others about her bad experiences.

Isolated negative issues do not have to define a customer’s experience of your business. However, it takes a great deal of time, energy and resources, to regain trust. It’s far better to invest in quality staff/training.

Asset Insurance These insurances exist to cover you in case any of your assets or property sustain damage during the course of business. This includes theft of property or cash, physical damage to stock or plant and equipment due to malfunction, even interruption of business events such as fire or flood that will cover fixed expenses if you cannot trade.

Personal Insurance Unlike companies, if you fall ill or suffer an injury, then your small business also suffers. Personal insurance ensures that you can wind up the business without too great a loss and receive an income flow should the need arise. Income protection insurance is highly recommended. This ensures you still receive regular income if you become unable to earn an income from that specific occupation. Furthermore, income protection insurance is tax deductible.

Liability Insurance Of the three categories of insurance, this category warrants serious consideration.

Liability insurance protects you against potential damages sustained by other

people who interact with your business.

The three forms are Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Product Liability.

Public Liability was discussed in an earlier article but in short, it covers damage sustained by a third party during the operation of your business.

Product Liability covers customers and maybe other individuals who sustained damage during the use of a product provided by your business.

The final form is Professional Indemnity. This form of insurance is for those businesses in which part of the service delivery requires the exercise of your professional judgement. So if an accountant gives accounting advice and the customer suffers damage because of that advice and the accountant was found to be negligent in giving that advice, then the insurance kicks in to cover the cost of the damage.

It is strongly advised that all businesses review liability insurance, income protection insurance and a general form of asset insurance in order to ensure the smooth operation of your business.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

Damien’s decade of hits

ime flies when you’re having fun and that’s certainly been true for Damien Leith.

A decade on from his ‘Australian Idol’ win and the singer/songwriter has managed to produce a consistent string of successful creative projects.

It’s a feat that few of his fellow talent show alumni have managed to replicate.

Though he may not have done it with the same pop fanfare as artists like Guy Sebastian, the humble family man has been working hard over the last 10 years on albums, tours, novels and a stage play.

But it’s his understanding of the ‘business’ part of show business which he credits for his success.

“A lot of musicians and artists in general are so caught up in the art of it that you sometimes forget about the business side,” Damien said.

“It’s really the business side where the longevity is.”

Since August, Damien has been touring in celebration of the milestone.

Though the tour includes a mix of music from across his back catalogue, it’s also given him the chance to revisit some of those early hits.

“I get to really go right back to the start,

even to songs that I did on ‘Australian Idol’,” Damien said.

“That’s great for me because I haven’t played some of those songs for a long time and they really are great songs.”

Of course when you see the name ‘Damien Leith’ it’s normally followed closely by ‘Australian Idol winner’. But for Damien, even 10 years after the win, he doesn’t mind the association one bit.

“At the end of the day, for me it is where I got my break and it’s been great, 10 years later I wouldn’t necessarily be doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for Idol,” he said.

“I would never turn up my nose about it or anything like that, it really helped me out an awful lot.”

Continuing on from a busy year the singer/songwriter already has big plans for 2017, including more touring, another book and a new album, which he worked on with one of Roy Orbison’s co-writers Joe Melson.

“He’s an amazing guy and what I’ve learned from working with him has just been phenomenal,” Damien said.

“He hasn’t really written with anyone or worked with anyone since Roy passed away, so it’s a real honour from that point of view as well.”

With confirmation that Australia’s been invited back for Eurovision in 2017, could we also be seeing the star representing our fair country on the world stage?

“I was actually asked to represent Ireland for Eurovision a few years back,”

Damien laughed.

“I was touring so I couldn’t do it at the time.

“But look, if it came up I wouldn’t necessarily say no, I think it’s a great event and a great show.”

Damien Leith will be performing at the Evan Theatre at Panthers on Friday, December 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $42.50.

Your guide to being a master of the barbecue this summer We all love a steak during summer, but what cut is best and how do you cook it?

As we come into summer you can almost hear the sound of barbecues lighting up across the country.

So this week I spoke to Hux Grill’s Jay Huxley to get the lowdown on how to choose and cook that perfect steak.

Rump According to Jay, rump has a fantastic true beef flavour and the way to ensure it is as tender as possible is to break down the rump into the five muscles, then cut those at 90 degrees to the grain. Best eaten medium.

T-bone While this is a popular cut, Jay advises that it can be hard to cook because it contains two different cuts (porterhouse and a small side eye fillet), which require different cooking times. Look for cuts that are 400 grams and over, start it on the grill and finish in a 110 degree Celsius oven. Best eaten medium rare.

Porterhouse This is the cut that is on the big side of the T-bone. According to Jay, this is a nice cut that has a fatty edge but relatively lean meat. Ideal around 300 grams. Best eaten medium rare.

Scotch Fillet

Scotch fillet offers a combination of flavour and tenderness made up of the centre eye and the delicious cap that runs over the top. It is best cut around 300-350 grams and with the bone still attached it is known as ribeye. Best eaten medium.

Eye Fillet This is the most expensive and tender cut but Jay advises that it has little to no fat and can be lacking in flavour. For that reason he suggests using it in a raw beef dish like steak tartare, or pairing with a strong flavoured sauce. Best eaten rare.

Cooking instructions for the perfect steak: 1. Bring the meat to room temperature

2. Season the meat with salt and pepper prior to cooking 3. Put a small amount of oil on the steak, not on the grill or pan 4. Pre-heat the grill or pan 5. Buy yourself a meat thermometer!

Use this to check the ‘doneness’ of your steak by sticking it into the thickest part of the meat Rare: 45 degrees Celsius Medium rare: 55 degrees Celsius Medium: 58 degrees Celsius Medium well: 62 degrees Celsius Well done: 70 degrees Celsius 6. Lastly, rest your steak for half the time you have cooked it.

Chemotherapy and exercise – how does it work?

Cancer treatment can be difficult and draining, but exercise can make a big difference...

For people undergoing treatment for cancer, the idea of exercising directly after having chemotherapy is the last thing on their mind.

Finding the motivation to exercise whilst battling all of the side effects of the chemotherapy, including fatigue, is difficult.

The latest research has found that exercising directly before or after chemotherapy can help reduce the side effects associated with treatment as well as increase the effect the chemotherapy has on the tumour.

Chemotherapy is used to weaken and destroy cancer cells in the body. However, tumours have poor blood supply and therefore a lot of the chemotherapy chemicals are not reaching the targeted area. During the process of treatment, chemotherapy also weakens our immune system which is our body’s natural ability to fight off diseases.

So how does exercising directly before or after chemotherapy help?

Exercise increases blood flow and therefore exercising directly before or after treatment can increase the potential

for more chemicals to reach the targeted tumour site.

Our body is constantly producing potential cancer cells all of the time, however our immune system finds them and destroys them with our natural killer cells. Exercise releases adrenalin into the bloodstream, a chemical in our body that inhibits a natural killer cell used to fight any unwanted cells. The idea of exercise is to encourage our natural killer cells to target the tumour site and help with the breakdown of the tumour.

fter a roller coaster couple of years up north, new Penrith Panthers recruit James Tamou says his young family is happy and settled in their brand new surrounds.

Following eight seasons with North Queensland, the 27-year-old Origin forward signed a four-year deal with Penrith in June, which Tamou admits was the toughest decision of his career.

Speaking on his second day of pre-season training, the Cowboys premiership winner opened up about the challenges of living away from family and why he decided Penrith was the next destination for his decorated career.

“I have three kids and up there I was a bit far away from family, and that was the main reason I came down,” Tamou said.

“But I wasn’t going to sign with any team.

What Penrith did this year was nothing short of impressive and I was watching them closely in the 12 weeks after I signed.”

Fortunately for Tamou and his family, Panthers boss Phil Gould and coach Anthony Griffin came to the rescue – offering the former Test star a lucrative deal reportedly worth $3 New Panthers recruit James Tamou started training with the club last week. million.
