Marching together to fight a vicious killer Springwood local Bettina Synnott and her family will take part in this Sunday’s Melanoma March ERIN MAMO

ext month, Springwood resident Bettina Synnott will take part in the annual Melanoma March, which aims to raise funds and support Australians suffering from a cancer that kills one person every six hours.

Mrs Synnott, who will walk in the Sydney march on Sunday, April 2, said she is participating in support of her mother, Bernhardine, who has stage four metastasised cancer in her lung.

“Mum was diagnosed just over 18 months ago and we were all really distraught at how quickly the cancer developed,” Mrs Synnott said.

“Mum had undergone surgery three years ago for a lump and the doctors thought they got it all.

“But melanoma is a sneaky beast and now it’s come back again.”

Mrs Synnott is planning to walk in the march with her husband and two young sons, who understand that they are walking on the day for nana.

“We decided to register for the march

as a family to raise awareness and to try and help future generations who may eventually go through what we are going through,” Mrs Synnott said.

“For our family, it’s really now just about trying to spend as much time as we can creating new memories with mum.

“If we can help to raise money and awareness for future research to one day find a cure for melanoma, then that would be amazing.”

Melanoma March events are being held in 17 locations around Australia this year, to raise money for Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA).

All funds donated from this year’s events will go towards a national research project, focusing on pooling data about the treatment that patients receive across the country, and the outcomes. Mrs Synnott is aiming to raise $700 towards vital research.

Grannies unite to support refugees ERIN MAMO

s part of recent Harmony Day celebrations, the Mountains-based Grandmothers against Detention of Refugee Children (GADRC) group campaigned through a silent vigil last weekend.

The group, who regularly campaign in the Mountains, donned their purple t-shirts, held banners and handed out flyers to reach out to the community at a special Springwood Growers Markets last Sunday, which celebrated Harmony Day. GADRC member, Denise Newton, said Harmony Day celebrations seemed like an appropriate time for the group to come together and advocate.

“Our group is all about getting the word out about children who are suffering in detention but in a peaceful manner,” she said.

“Some people don’t know organisations like ours exist, and we really need the public to be more active and involved so that we can make a difference.”

Mrs Newton, who became involved in the group after losing a refugee friend, said she wants to see changes in government policies that allow refugees to be processed quicker, so that children aren’t growing up in detention centres.

“There’s an increasing level of sexual

abuse in detention centres, and this is just one of the issues,” she said.

“Imagine as a child or teenager sleeping in a tent, on a camp stretcher bed, night after night and sharing a bathroom with people of all ages and both sexes.

“No child should have to live like that, a child belongs in a home, safe, with their family or loved ones.”

Mrs Newton added that a recent study undertaken by Amnesty International

suggested that many children who grow up in detention centres have suicidal thoughts because they have no hope for their future.

“These children have no hope because they don’t know how much longer they are going to be in detention and if they will be sent back to the country they fled from originally,” she said.

On Saturday, March 18, a number of police and a drug detection dog conducted a drug operation across the Blue Mountains area.

As a result of the operation 23 individuals were searched.

At a Katoomba address, a 33-year-old female was searched and it is alleged that a quantity of cannabis and a number of ecstasy tablets were found.

The female was arrested and charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’ and ‘possess prohibited drug’ and has been granted conditional bail to appear at Katoomba Local Court next month.

A further arrest was made during the recent Blue Mountains Music Festival when the drug detection dog approached a 15-year-old male from a Blackheath address and gave an indication that the teenager was carrying something.

The individual was searched and it is alleged that police located a small amount of cannabis.

The male was arrested and taken to Katoomba Police Station and is to be dealt with under the ‘Young Offenders Act’ by way of a caution.

Police arrested a 23-year-old male in a licensed premise in Katoomba after finding a quantity of cocaine and ecstasy in his possession.

The male made admission to owning the drugs and he will be issued with a

Court Attendance Notice to attend Court on the charges of ‘possess prohibited drug.’

It is also alleged that the drug detection dog gave an indication that a 39-year-old female from Queensland was carrying a prohibited substance after she made attempts to avoid police detection.

A search of the female located a quantity of cocaine in her handbag.

The female was issued with a Future Court Attendance Notice to appear at Katoomba Local Court on Monday, May 8.

Police concerned over an unwanted tradesman

Between 12.30pm and 1pm on Sunday, March 19, a male entered a store on Katoomba Road, Katoomba, through the rear entrance.

He was spoken to by store personnel and claimed that he was a tradesman who had been contacted to fix a leak on the premises.

The male person then proceeded to walk through the entire store before leaving.

Police were called, due to the suspicious activity, as no tradesman had been contacted to attend the location.

The male left prior to the police arriving, with CCTV footage currently being reviewed in an attempt to identify him.

Local students learn how to be green ERIN MAMO

tudents from Glenbrook Primary School have joined with Greening Australia in a bid to re-vegetate land across the Cumberland Plain.

As part of the ‘Cumberland Stepping Stones Project’, Greening Australia recently visited Glenbrook Primary School to educate some of the students about habitat loss and fragmentation in the Blue Mountains and to plant new trees at the school.

Project Officer, Rafiqul Huq, said habitat loss and fragmentation due to rapid development in western Sydney is impacting heavily on the plants and animals in the area.

“We believe that a healthy future for western Sydney and Blue Mountains residents depends on a healthy environment,” he said.

“Through our ‘Cumberland Stepping Stones Project’ we are working to reconnect the land by re-vegetating key areas of degraded land.”

Mr Huq said students play an important role when it comes to the future of the environment.

“By getting involved, students can play an active role in helping their local environment and building a healthier future,” he said.

Principal of Glenbrook Primary School, David Brown, said the school was very excited to be involved in the project.

“We got involved with Greening Australia because we believe it’s important to protect the beautiful area we live in,” he said.

“As educators, the staff and I here think it’s important for the kids to understand the positive impacts that they can have on the environment.”

Mr Brown said each class at the school will now be tasked with looking after a specific tree that was planted, ensuring that it is watered regularly and growing to its potential.

In 2015, the Australian Government announced funding for four environmental projects as part of the ‘Cumberland Stepping Stones Project’, which would aim to restore vegetation in the western Sydney region.

The Cumberland Plain sprawls across western Sydney from Liverpool through to Penrith and up into parts of the Hawkesbury.

Greening Australia have extended their conservation efforts into the Blue Mountains region to further improve connectivity in the significant landscape.

wimming teacher Hayden Bousfield recently returned from a two week trip to the state’s central west where he taught vital swimming skills to the local Indigenous community.

The Springwood local visited Wilcannia, which is home to 600 people, 520 of whom are Indigenous.

The town is situated on the Darling River, which is where many locals get relief from near 50 degree days but unfortunately, the majority of residents can’t swim.

Wilcannia is home to a public pool but no one is offering swimming lessons.

With Indigenous people still over represented in drowning statistics, Paul McCabe, Principal of St Theresa’s Community School in Wilcannia, is working hard to make a change and address the community’s lack of swimming ability.

Mr McCabe called Bousfield, a family friend, about the possibility of a two week intensive swimming program in Wilcannia.

Bousfield, who works at Nepean Aquatic Centre, made the 10-hour trip in midFebruary and discovered a community in desperate need of swimming lessons.

Local swim teacher Hayden Bousfield taught many Indigenous kids how to swim during a visit to Wilcannia recently Once the thick layer of bugs and live frogs were removed from the under utilised public pool, Bousfield was able to begin working with 28 Indigenous children, aged from five to eight-years-old, enrolled at the school.

While the end result was deemed a major success, Bousfield recalled the many challenges during the trip.

“It was all about filling the kids with confidence – despite being keen to learn

many would get to chest deep and freak out, and run to the edge or the steps of the pool,” he said.

“Sometimes it was challenging to get them into a lesson in the first place, and continue the lesson for a 15 minute block.

“We had meltdowns, very colourful language, and I came away with many new insults… but they were all gorgeous children, and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.”

Blitz on “no refund” signage One in five NSW businesses visited during a recent blitz on illegal “no refund” signs was found to be breaking the law, the State Government has revealed.

Under the Australian Consumer Law, retailers are not permitted to post “no refund” signs in their shops or print similar messages on receipts or invoices.

This is because they imply a refund is not possible even when a product is defective.

“Consumers aren’t always entitled to a refund – for example, if they have just changed their mind,” said Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Matt Kean.

“However, they certainly do have the right to a refund if there is a problem with a product, and to suggest otherwise is illegal.”

To improve compliance with the law, NSW Fair Trading conducted Operation Refund with consumer protection officers visiting 561 retailers at 52 locations across metropolitan and regional NSW. 125 businesses – or about one in five – had illegal messaging about refunds on signs, invoices or receipts.

Clothing shops were the worst offenders, with non-compliance detected in 68 – or more than half – the premises visited, followed by discount variety shops (13) and pharmacies (six).

At each business, Fair Trading personnel educated the traders about the law, removed unlawful signs, and provided alternate signs with legal wording to assist the businesses in question.

New community choir hits the Blue Mountains ERIN MAMO

roup singing is set to be the next big thing in the Mountains, bringing locals together all in the name of song.

Inspired by the popular American television show ‘Glee,’ the community choir, Adult Glee Club, opened recently in Blaxland.

Under the musical direction of local Henrik Enerberg, the aim of the club is to revolutionise what it means to join a local choir by introducing mainstream music into the mix.

Founder Sandra Lie said Adult Glee Club is more than a choir.

“Glee Club is a diverse group of people that contribute to the fresh, modern vibe that is unlike any other community choir,” she said.

“Whether you’ve been part of a choir or vocal group before, you’re an ex-pro performer, solo singer, karaoke champ or shower singer, the Adult Glee Club caters for all.”

Adult Glee Club, which started in Sydney, will now get its Mountains members together every Wednesday night at Blaxland Community Centre from 7pm to 8pm.

Ms Lie said the club will aim to organise special performances at live local music venues throughout the year, rather than sticking to conventional choir settings in churches or community halls.

“This year, we plan to host open mic nights, Glee Goes Solo Nights and an end of year concert with a full band, lighting and stage production,” she said.

“We’ll hold these all at local venues like pubs and clubs.”

Blaxland is the first Adult Glee Club that is situated outside the inner city metro area.

Ms Lie said she is hopeful that the club will gain popularity.

“I hope Glee Club will bring the Mountains community together in a new way, that doesn’t involve mobile phones and technology,” she said.

Adult Glee Club is becoming more and more popular throughout the country with a presence currently in St Kilda in Melbourne, Wynnum in Brisbane and Marrickville, Gordon and Bondi Junction in Sydney.

There is one, immutable ‘law’ of investment which states – in order to achieve greater returns you have to expose your funds to the risk of loss.

Consequently, it is the management of this risk/ return ratio that becomes the hallmark of a successful investment. Unfortunately, the world not being as perfect as we would like it, throws ‘curve balls’ at our investments on a pretty regular basis with many being too difficult to ‘hit out of the park’.

termed ‘sequence risk’. Put simply ‘sequence risk’ is the risk of experiencing poor investment performance at the wrong time, typically when your investment portfolio balance is at its greatest.

“At the wrong time”, you say “surely getting a poor return is always at the wrong time?” It most certainly is, but with very long term investments such as superan-

nuation, timing of losses are incredibly important.

For example, a negative 10 per cent return for your super fund in its first few years would be easy to accept.

Your balance in those years is small and a 10 per cent reduction is barely missed.

But it becomes a much different story if the negative return occurs a year before you retire. This is the time that your fund has had the benefit of 30 years of continuous saving and returns, and is therefore enjoying its highest balance.

A 10 per cent market fall at this point results in a much bigger monetary reduction which will definitely make you think twice about your ability to retire. It is at this time that you suddenly acquire a very clear understanding of sequencing risk.

There is no absolute solution to this issue but I have always recommended that superannuation balances be transferred into cash options within particular funds about two years prior to retirement. Yes, it does seem ludicrous to move from an investment that has been achieving 15 per cent return, as a result of boom conditions, into an option generating no more than three per cent – until of course a market correction.

ome people have an enormous capacity for creative thinking and analyse the world differently than most. They have epiphanies about solutions to everyday ‘problems’ or an ability to produce products and services that society doesn’t know we ‘need’ yet.

But great ideas do not necessarily translate into a great business. If you have seen any episodes of the TV show ‘Shark Tank’, you will know it is a common theme: someone presents a great idea, but they haven’t created a viable business model for it. Although there are many paths on the business journey, there are some important steps that are vital to success, to move from a ‘big idea’ to a viable business: • Identify and develop a customer base before you develop the product. You may think you have produced the most amazing, brilliant and essential product ever created. But if you haven’t tested your idea with real customers, you will almost certainly waste time and money fixing mistakes. Find people

in your target market who can give you real feedback on your product.

And then hone your product to meet their needs. • Find out if your idea exists and whether it can partner with an existing concept. Sometimes you won’t know if your ‘big idea’ has already been done by someone else until you start. So be prepared to find ways that your idea can be adapted or can work alongside an existing product or service. This can be a smart move particularly in relation to marketing costs/success, as well as providing your new concept with a higher level of trust. • Work on a ‘business model’ before a ‘business plan’. This will demonstrate how you will create, deliver and capture value. If you need to involve investors, this information is far more valuable than resource allocation, organisational structure and financial predictions. These are really all guesses anyway – it is far better to explore possibilities than to try and predict.

ales and selling often conjure up negative thoughts, both in the minds of the consumer and small business owner. Too many people think of their worst pushy sales experience or the stereotypical used car salesman. However selling doesn’t have to be this way!

To make a sale, ideally people need to want to buy. People will buy when their problem is solved and they feel good. By good we can mean comfortable, happy, excited and have a lack of remorse. We buy on emotion and justify with logic.

Feel good factor If you think about the last really great experience you had buying something, invariably it will be the service you remember, not the item you bought.

Therefore before selling, get to know your customer, show genuine interest in them and make them feel good!

Solving their problem To solve a problem you need to understand the problem. Avoid making assumptions. Ask questions to work out what the real need is, and whether you have something that could solve

that problem. Think about chemist treatments. Often we go to the chemist and get treatment to sooth a symptom, however often the problem goes undiagnosed and therefore unaddressed.

Solving the root problem will always be better than addressing symptoms.

Benefits Rather than selling think about helping people. Educating and informing people, offering ideas will show you to be an expert – a trusted advisor. This applies extremely well with services, but also products. Letting someone know that a food item is made preservative-free and why that’s important will help sell that food. Look at the benefits, especially the emotional benefits you offer. What feeling will your product or service invoke?

Change your mindset Instead of selling being a bad thing, embrace it as a chance to help people.

You’re solving someone’s problem, and making them feel good. You’ll be providing a benefit they need – so you’re actually doing them a favour. Thinking of sales this way makes it far less scary and far more enjoyable!

ussie country music stars Amber Lawrence and Catherine Britt are making it an all-female affair on their current ‘Love &

Lies’ tour.

Joined by guest opener Fanny Lumsden, the long-time friends will be performing their own set before taking the stage for some special duets.

The tour was inspired by their collaboration on the track ‘Cheers to the Girls’, which features on Amber’s latest album ‘Happy Ever After’ and has been a major hit on the country charts.

“We’ve been friends for a long time, Catherine and I, having both been in the business for a while now, but never really connected musically until this time,” Amber explained.

“It’s really exciting that we’re on the road together and having a great time.”

The pair were in Penrith recently for a performance at the Penrith Working Truck Show at the Museum of Fire.

Though the weather was miserable it didn’t dampen the spirits of the truckloving crowd, who had a particular soft spot for one of Amber’s tracks.

“I’ve got a song called ‘My Big Mack

Truck’, which was a surprise hit song for me last year,” Amber said.

“It was a kids’ song but it seems to have resonated with truck lovers,” she laughed.

The Golden Guitar winner released her fifth studio album in September and this time she’s embracing every aspect of life – both good and bad.

“I think previous albums of mine have been a bit more hopeful,” Amber said.

“Whereas this is more like ‘look, this is life, right here right now, in all its glory’.

“I don’t think there’s anyone that has a perfect life, no matter what you see on Instagram.

“So ‘Happy Ever After’ is kind of saying try to find happiness in the moment, rather than deciding ‘well I’ll be happy when I go on this holiday, or I’ll be happy when I finally have my fairytale wedding, or buy my dream home’.

“It’s hard to do but I try to take my own advice,” she laughed.

Along with her music career, Amber has also recently taken up a position on the other side of the spotlight, with her own radio show ‘Amber Nights’ on iHeartRadio. “iHeart radio is huge worldwide and to be given my own radio show has been so phenomenal,” she said.

While it’s a new role for the country musician, Amber has learned plenty from her time in the public eye and knows the business well.

“I try to avoid the questions I hate answering,” she laughed.

“We try to make it just a bit of a fun show rather than anything too informative.”

Eating breakfast is the perfect way to get your day started, but too many of us fail to get it right.

The answer is a lot simpler than you think...

I’m sure you’ve heard a million times before that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

And it’s true; breakfast helps to break that overnight fast and sets us up for the day.

So this week I wanted to run through some tips on how to create the perfect breakfast.

Include a protein source Protein helps keep you feeling full so aim to include a protein-rich food at breakfast to sustain you until lunch or your mid-morning snack.

Protein-rich foods include eggs, beans, dairy foods (such as milk, yoghurt or cheese), soy milk and oats.

Don’t forget the plant foods With only five per cent of us getting the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, breakfast is the perfect time to get some plant foods into your diet.

Add a piece of fruit to your cereal, or include baby spinach, tomato or mushrooms in a cooked breakfast like an omelette.

I

t’s little wonder that John Riddoch had been dubbed ‘the Squire of Penola’ by neighbours of his vast estate at Coonawarra back in the late 19th century – the property covered 700 square kms, and from the early 1880s had been supporting as many as 160,000 sheep.

But in the early 1890s ‘the Squire’ decided it was time to down-size, and so carved it up into smaller blocks which he sold off to new settlers, while also planting 52ha of vineyards for himself on part of what he had kept.

After his death in 1901 those 52ha somewhat languished, until Melbourne wine merchants Samuel and David Wynn became impressed with the richness and intensity of wines still coming off the old property.

So impressed, in fact, that they bought the place in 1951, renaming it Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

Just a year later they released a 1952 Shiraz under the estate’s name, and a now-released 2014 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz furthers the reputation of this premium Coonawarra Shiraz under the label.

Medium-bodied with lovely flavours of red and black fruits, forest floor brambles and a cool spiciness, this 2014 is fresh, lively and rich, and has a beautifully lingering finish. At $25 it’s a particularly nice choice with barbecued lamb burgers.

One to note: Increasing numbers of growers in Tasmania are reporting great results from trial plantings of Syrah. Amongst one of these successes is Riversdale Estate with its 2016 Syrah off vines planted almost a decade ago at Cambridge, in southern Tassie’s renowned Coal River Valley. With fruit for the 2016 being intensely flavoured, together with bonus natural acidity and fine tannins, it’s all made for a really rewarding drop.

The plantar plate is a thick fibrocartilignous ligament that spans across the bottom of the forefoot.

It is responsible for preventing excessive extension of the toes and stabilising them from compressive stress that occurs with walking.

What to look for?

Injury to the plantar plate usually presents with symptoms such as, forefoot pain, swelling, heat, redness, a sensation of “walking on a marble” or “walking on the bones of the foot”. An obvious plantar plate injury can be seen when one of the lesser digits appears to be lifted above or cross over the rest while standing.

Causes Due to its mechanical role, excessively high and abnormal pressures are the main culprit. This can either be from intrinsic or extrinsic factors.

The first big look we are seeing featured everywhere right now are perfect smudged out cherry stained lips.

Start with a punchy pop of bright coloured lipstick dabbed onto the lip, really focusing on the centre of your pout and working the colour into the skin.

I think fierce orange reds borderlining on neon and daring hot pinks work the best.

The final look to try this Autumn/Winter season is a spin on the classic smokey eye.

Start with brown eyeshadow smoking out the colour on the outer third of the eye.

Then to add a sultry vampire gothica feel, add warm red eyeliner and smudge into the lower waterline and lashline.

Use this instead of your basic typical black.

I find an auburn eyebrow pencil easier to find and use!

pringwood United Football Club is celebrating their 50th season with a new uniform, club crest and ongoing celebrations throughout the year.

Springwood United, which started out as Springwood Baptist in 1965 and then became Springwood Soccer Club in 1968, recently launched their new uniform and crest which has strong ties to the history of the club.

Chairman Chris Gilchrist said the new uniform is a combination of different strip designs that were worn during the late 1970’s to the mid 1980’s at the club.

“We wanted one strong but sharp, simple strip on the uniform that represents all of the previous strips that were worn at the club during successful periods of time,” Gilchrist said.

“As for the crest, the club’s committee also thought it was appropriate to reinstate the lyrebird that was on the original crest, returning to the roots of our history which has always been at the forefront of any kind of planning made.”

This Saturday, the club will celebrate with a season launch and gala day at their home ground in Winmalee.

Players from Springwood United Football Club lies are being encouraged to come along for some fun during what Mr Gilchrist describes as an exciting time for the club.

“This season at the club is a really exciting time for our members as our 88 teams comprised of 990-plus players celebrate the club’s 50th season playing football,” Gilchrist said.

“The 50th season is a significant milestone.

This season is a time to not only celebrate our past but look forward to a strong future.”

The club is also having a ‘Celebrating 50 Seasons Dinner’ on Saturday, May 27, at Penrith Panthers. Tickets are $80 per person for a three course meal, drinks and entertainment.
