NSW Government fails the test

I

n 2014, when Gladys Berejiklian was Transport Minister in NSW, she said Redfern Station was “a major transport hub” when announcing an important upgrade. She was right, too. Redfern is indeed crucial to Sydney’s transport network now with more and more jobs being created in the general area including a major new office for the Commonwealth Bank that will attract thousands of jobs. Three years later Ms Berejiklian, now Premier, is presiding over a Government that via some backwards thinking is making Redfern harder to access for Penrith and Blue Mountains commuters. As has been widely reported, Redfern is no longer a stop for Blue Mountains Line express train services in the morning or afternoon peak. There’s a range of other issues with the new timetable, which started this week, that have also created frustration for commuters right across Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Local and major papers across the city have been reporting on these problems, while both Channel Seven and Channel Nine ran separate stories this past week. It would be impossible for Transport Minister Andrew Constance and local MPs to be unaware of these frustrations, but it seems change is unlikely now that the timetable has commenced. The problems were ignored. The stubborn State Government pushed ahead with its plan to make getting to and from work harder each day for so many. It is embarrassing. Redfern Station provides access to major employment hubs like Channel Seven, as well as to Sydney University.

“The stubborn State Government pushed ahead with its plan to make getting to and from work harder” Soon, it will be the station of choice for thousands of employees at the major new Commonwealth Bank office currently being built. But under the new timetable employees and students from the Mountains won’t be able to get there via an express train service, even though they were able to do so last week. Yes, that’s called going backwards. Mr Constance said last month: “On the weekday morning peak, five times as many customers from Blue Mountains stations are travelling to Central rather than Redfern, which means that the majority of these customers will enjoy quicker journey times.” Mr Constance has either been misinformed or is playing with the truth. A comparison of the old and new timetables proves that nobody is getting to Central “quicker” under the new model. It just isn’t true. So, I figured I’d ask him to explain. I sent an enquiry along to one of his media advisors, asking him to back-up that statement – which trains were getting commuters to Central faster? The response was extraordinary. Oh, and it didn’t come from Mr

News..............................................1-10 Entertainment ......................11-15

Constance – he passed the buck to a spokesperson for Transport for NSW. “The statement refers to the reduction in overall journey times Blue Mountains customers travelling to the city would see as a result of the Redfern stop being removed, compared to if Redfern was retained as a stop on the line.” I’m sorry, but that is an absolute load of crap. In other words, “we have made your journey slower but don’t worry, it could have been worse”. I have watched this timetable story unfold with great interest as I saw it as a big test for the State Government to prove it actually listens to the people. It has failed that test epically. I can only advise commuters now facing more time away from their loved ones each day one thing: seriously consider your vote at the 2019 State Election. What else can one suggest? Labor may not reintroduce the Redfern stop but at least it will send the sitting Government a message that this just isn’t on. Governments prattle on about faster journey times, more time at home with the family and better services. But this Government is taking us backwards in those regards. I am struggling to find an improvement anywhere in this new timetable for local commuters. Journeys are generally longer, there seems to be less peak services overall and a major hub like Redfern has been removed from the express option. And nobody in the Government is standing up for commuters. That is perhaps the most outrageous point of all. Andrew Constance now doesn’t even want his name attached to the debacle.

Explosive claims suggest Council knew of asbestos issues but didn’t take action ERIN MAMO

t’s been a big few weeks for Blue Mountains City Council after a number of explosive claims revealed Council may have ignored asbestos issues at numerous local sites in the region. 2GB’s Ray Hadley said leaked reports suggest Council were aware of asbestos at a number of properties, including Wentworth Falls Pre-School Kindergarten, but took no action to fix the problem. After the news broke on Hadley’s program, Council posted a lengthy fact sheet to their Facebook page acknowledging that the safety, health and wellbeing of the community and their employees are of paramount importance to them. The fact sheet also stated that Council is not in the position to make detailed comments about the allegations that have been made about them until current investigations are completed. At Council’s last ordinary meeting on November 14, it was resolved that they would appoint an independent investigator to look into the matter. Greens Councillor Kerry Brown said she is disappointed by Council’s response. “I don’t think an investigation run by Council’s lawyers and therefore subject to

I

legal professional privilege will pass the pub test as an ‘independent’ inquiry,” she said. “I think that the staff and the public would be more comfortable with an independent body investigating.” Cr Brown said all Councillors are still being kept in the dark about the issue. “I have been repeatedly refused copies of the terms of reference for the asbestos inquiry,” she said. “The inquiry and its terms of reference were the subject of a mayoral minute at the meeting this month. “We had half an hour to look at them and other mayoral minutes, but we were not allowed to keep copies. That is ridiculous!” Cr Brown said she is hopeful that Council will choose to make this crisis an opportunity for change. “I would like to see us step up immediately and resource our work, health and safety so that it qualifies for Australian Standards 4801 accreditation,” she said. “The accreditation would mean Council’s safety management, including of asbestos, was regularly checked by independent auditors who would advise on corrective actions as necessary. “I proposed this at the last Council meeting and it was rejected, but I will continue to push for it.”

We want to ensure you that we care about the environment, and whilst it’s important to get the news to you, we do it with that care in mind. The newspaper is totally recyclable. In addition, the plastic that protects the paper from the weather is provided by EcoPure. EcoPure is a patented plastic additive, which uses the presence of microorganisms to make polymer plastics completely biologically degradable without any environmentally harmful residues. If a product is manufactured with EcoPure technology, it – apart from the fixed decline time – is compostable without restrictions. The plastic product is not suitable due to the EN 13432 conditions for local and institutional Compost System, but it can be composted at home, it can be deposited, it can be buried, it can even be used for agricultural products and for products in the land filling.

Refugees welcome here Lithgow City Council recently declared itself a Refugee Welcome Zone ERIN MAMO

ast Wednesday, Lithgow City Council joined its neighbours in the Blue Mountains and formally declared their town as a Refugee Welcome Zone. Lithgow Mayor Stephen Lesslie officially signed the Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration at Lithgow Library, stating that the declaration reflects a recognition that there are many people across the world, including in our own neighbourhoods who, through no fault of their own, are in desperate need of asylum and new opportunities for themselves and their families. “I’m delighted to be able to sign this declaration on behalf of the City and the community,” he said. “I think it is vitally important that we send the message to refugees and asylum seekers that we have an appreciation of their dire circumstances and that we extend a welcome to them.” Council made the decision to sign the declaration after the Lithgow Asylum Seeker and Refugee Support Group brought the matter to their attention. Blue Mountains City Council declared they were a Refugee Welcome Zone back in 2004.

L

Musicians set to play at this weekend’s local concert The Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration states that towns will, welcome refugees into the community, uphold the human rights of refugees, demonstrate compassion for refugees and enhance cultural and religious diversity in the community. The declaration does not confer any formal obligations and zones are not required to uphold any financial commitments. Locally, Blue Mountains Refugee

Support Group supports refugees in the community and aims to provide practical assistance to those released from detention, financial support to asylum seekers in the community, and to raise public awareness of refugee and asylum seeker issues. The group is currently selling tickets to a concert that will be held at the Mavis Wood Hall, Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre in Lawson this Saturday,

December 2 at 7pm. The concert, known as Skorba: Great Siege of Malta 1565, will take guests on a musical and visual journey through the Ottoman Siege of Malta in 1565, with music in Maltese, Turkish and English. Tickets are $25, and proceeds will go towards the cause. For more information and to purchase tickets to Saturday’s concert, visit www. eventbrite.com.au.

Anala Art Advisory proudly presents – “Cover Versions’’ a new body of work by Blaxland artist Ben Tankard In the last two years Ben has had a lot of success with pop art paintings based on classic books and board games, he has now turned his attention to some of the most iconic album covers of the last 50 years. Ben has taken inspiration from the original album covers, and painted large, dynamic and explosive interpretations. ‘I wanted to choose albums with striking covers, from a diverse selection of musicians and in a range of styles. Even though the original album covers are all very different, I’ve unified them by the way they are painted, with thick paint, spatters and splashes. It gives them a rich texture and energy.’ – Ben Tankard Ben’s latest show is ‘Cover Versions’. Please join us for the official opening Saturday the 2nd of December at Anala Art Advisory, 6 Ross Street, Glenbrook from 10:30am. There you will be able to meet and greet the artist, along with light refreshments and a wonderful mixed platter from Con’s Continental Deli Glenbrook. The body of work will feature ten large album cover paintings, many of which will be instantly recognisable, from bands such as Nirvana, Guns N Roses, The Clash, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Ramones, and more. Ben has had several successful solo and group shows in the last few years, and his paintings have been included in prestigious prizes such as the Sulman Prize, Mosman Prize, Gallipoli Art Prize and the Calleen Art Prize. His practice of reinterpreting pop icons into textured works of art has proven very popular, and his work is held in collections in Australia and overseas. Michael and Ben look forward to celebrating this unique body of work with the public which has been brilliantly executed by one of the top emerging artists this Country has to offer. New airport Experts fear thousands of turtles could EMILY NEWTON

n small dams across western Sydney, hundreds, if not thousands, of turtles and other wild animals are at risk of dying as sites are cleared to make way for development. It is the hidden story behind a Sydney that is growing quickly and losing much of its natural open space areas. Shane Davies and Kane Durrant, from Turtle Rescues NSW, believe not enough is being done to protect the native wildlife at the development sites of the Western Sydney Airport and surrounding road upgrades. “When you look at the airport site by the maps that the government put out, it shows maybe 16 dams on this site, and they’re the bigger dams, Mr Davies told the Record. “But when you look at the big picture, and you look at all the little dams, there are heaps of them, they don’t even come up on the map. At the future development site for the airport in Badgerys Creek, the pair believe there are about 200 small dams in the area, each that could be home to between 20 and 50 eastern long-necked turtles.

I

“We estimate between 8,000 and 10,000 eastern long-necked turtles on this site, and that’s not including all the surrounding areas where the roads are getting built, Mr Davies said. “That’s just this area here, it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sydney. Mr Davies, who grew up in Luddenham, said they’re also finding echidnas, an increase in dead kangaroos as well as snakes and eels in the area. Mr Durrant added that through Environmental Impact Statements, developers are often only looking for endangered species and ignoring more common species. Their concern comes as turtles are facing an aging population with few surviving babies born each year due to foxes raiding 95 per cent of their nests,

be lost when construction on Western Sydney Airport ramps up in years ahead and now development placing additional pressure on them with fears they could soon become at risk. A Department of Infrastructure spokesperson said that a Biodiversity Construction Environmental Management Plan will be developed before main construction commences. “This plan must include a protocol for decommissioning dams on the airport site, including relocating aquatic vertebrate fauna, including turtles, to areas of suitable habitat retained on the airport site or adjoining habitats,” the spokesperson said. “Specialist services are expected to be procured to assist in implementing the Biodiversity CEMP.” Mr Durrant said the pair are concerned after previous developments where they have heard similar claims, only to find upwards of 40 turtles in dams that were about to be filled in. “Nothing gets buried alive on Earth. This is Australia, and it’s inhumane,” he said. “We want to know that there is someone doing the job properly, or we’d like to do the job.” We want your feedback! You’re invited to a TV reunion ERIN MAMO

or eight years, millions of people tuned in every Wednesday night to watch savvy sisters and farmers on the hit TV series ‘McLeod’s Daughters’ and now some of the cast are coming to the Blue Mountains. Over a number of days in early to midDecember, Bridie Carter, Lisa Chappell, Myles Pollard, Aaron Jeffery and Zoe Naylor will host fans from all over at a private 50 acre farm in Bilpin. Zoe Naylor, who will MC on the day, said the event will be unforgettable, and will provide the opportunity for fans to get up close to some of the show’s biggest stars. “The show finished eight years ago and still, to this day, we get an enormous amount of fan mail asking us to please get the cast back together,” she told the Record. “So we thought this would be the perfect opportunity, the show really helped so many people through difficult times in their lives and we want to give something back.” Event-goers can expect to be wined and dined on the day of their choice with cider on arrival and a gourmet lunch.

F

Cast members of the show will spend from 11am to 5pm with guests, answering questions, telling untold stories and taking photos. There will also be a special guest appearance by the TV show’s horse wrangler Graham Ware, live acoustic music and the chance to take a dip in the large spring fed dam that is on the private property. Ms Naylor, who played Regan on the South Australian-based series from 2005 to 2009, is married to original cast member Aaron Jeffery, with the loving couple living locally. “I’m very passionate about the Blue Mountains and we really thought it would be amazing to bring this reunion of sorts to the region,” she said. Locally, Ms Naylor runs a series of workshops under her brand Kaftan Mama, that aim to inspire women to awaken and take control, owning difficulties that they have encountered in the past. The mum of two also just finished shooting a guest appearance on hit Channel Seven drama ‘Home and Away’. Tickets to the upcoming McLeod’s events are $250 per person and are selling fast. To purchase tickets, visit www. eventbrite.com.au/e/mcleods-daughtersreunite-tickets.

WW31506

On November 15, our Blue Mountains turned rainbow as we joined the nation in voting overwhelmingly in favour of marriage equality. While across the country 61.6 per cent of eligible voters cast a YES vote, the electorate of Macquarie voted YES at an above average rate. In the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury 63.9 per cent of voters supported the YES vote – the highest rate west of Sydney. There was no need for this postal survey in the first place, and I know talking to LGBTIQ+ people in our community that it has been a painful process, even though so many people were able to express their differing views in a respectful way. However, the result confirmed what we already knew – that the vast majority of Blue Mountains residents believe that all individuals should be able to access the right to marry, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. I want to congratulate and thank all of the local community activists, volunteers and Pink Mountains members who raised awareness for the Yes vote at street stalls, at train stations in the early morning, or by chatting to their neigh-

bours and friends. This was a victory that was fought for, and one which our community deserves to be proud of. Of course this week I should be in Parliament, voting on the marriage equality legislation. The Prime Minister’s decision to cancel Parliament for the week, using the bill as an excuse, is insulting. All MPs should be in Canberra this week – there are 53 pieces of legislation awaiting debate, so there is plenty for us to be working through while the Senate deliberates on the same-sex marriage bill put forward by Senator Dean Smith. The bill is the result of a cross-party working group that spent months on consultation. Religious freedom is a core component of our civil society and denying services to individuals based on their gender or sexual orientation is already illegal in Australia, so I will not be voting to rollback discrimination protections. I look forward to finally having the chance to do what I should have been able to do a long time ago – vote YES in the Parliament, so that no matter who we fall in love with, everyone has the same chance to declare their commitment by marrying.

ENTERTAINMENT

It made us cringe, but we loved it!

T KATE REID

hough it’s the decade that often gets stereotyped as the time that taste forgot, there’s no doubt that the 80s provided us with some of the catchiest and most iconic pop

and rock hits. It’s also a time in music that people love to revisit, and nothing proves this better than The Absolutely 80s Band. This supergroup – made up of an everchanging line-up of some of Australia’s

favourite 80s musicians – has been touring for more than a decade and is currently heading out on another round with their ‘1 Louder Tour’. The current incarnation features Uncanny X-Men’s Brian Mannix, Boom Crash Opera’s Dale Ryder, Wa Wa Nee’s Paul Gray and Kids in the Kitchen’s Scott Carne – who believes the group’s longevity comes down to a few different factors. “I think the key to it is we do really enjoy it and we have a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a bit of a revolving line-up too with different shows, so it’s not the same all the time, there’s variety for the fans.” Touring with fellow 80s stars has been a cathartic process for those involved.

“As much as it’s fun it’s also been good therapy for all of us because we share similar stories of touring and the sharks in the ocean that took a big bite of us all,” Scott said. Together The Absolutely 80s Band put on a high-octane show full of the collective members’ biggest hits like ‘Everybody Wants to Work’, ‘Change in Mood’ and ‘Onion Skin’. For Scott, the 80s was a particularly special era in music due to the sense of possibility and fun that was in the air at the time. “With the music of the 80s there was no rules,” he said. “I think it was a very naive time and

people just kind of made it up as they went along. The 80s was the decade where everything was happening, the world was a really promising place to be.” Along with their own hits, The Absolutely 80s Band will also revisit other iconic tracks from the decade including tributes to ‘fallen comrades’ like Michael Hutchence. “We’re recreating the sounds and taking people back in a time machine to the 80s,” Scott said. The Absolutely 80s Band will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, December 8 at 8pm. Tickets are $35. To purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9677 4916.

recently attended the inaugural launch of the Penrith-based Men’s Altitude networking group. The group promotes collaboration, partnership and success in small business. The keynote speaker for the event talked about the secret of his business success. It was built on relationships. He described how small conversations he had early on in his business converted to significant business opportunities, sometimes years later. He aims always to project a positive impression of himself in any interaction with people. The result of this approach is that people like him, and 80 per cent of his business comes from referrals and word of mouth. The essence of being successful at relationships is being an engaged listener. Business guru Steven Covey says “seek to understand before being understood”, a principle worth applying to any social interaction, not only business.

But how many of us are good listeners? Often our thought processes and egos get in the way of hearing what other people say. There are three levels of listening. One is downloading, which is not really listening. This is the sort of listening you might do when your partner tries to tell you what sort of day they’ve had at work! A second level is listening for selfinterest. What can I get out of this conversation? How can I assert my point of view? The third level is engaged listening or presence. It is listening with no personal agenda, with no sense of having to get anything at all from the conversation. It is having genuine curiosity and openness, allowing people to reveal themselves to you. Next time you’re having a conversation with a colleague control the urge to jump in. Just listen. Be fully present to what they have to say and see what happens.

ocial platforms are constantly updating and upgrading to create better user experience. Here are a few recent changes you may have missed and how to take advantage of them. Polls on Facebook and Instagram Both Facebook and Instagram have recently introduced a Poll feature to their platforms – Facebook via timeline post and Instagram via Stories post. This means that you can now create a poll and your audience can vote on the poll, based on one of the two options you create as answers. This is available on both your personal or business pages. If you are thinking of adding a new product or service to your business, introducing a rewards program or want to ask your clients for any type of feedback, polls are a simple way to do this and monitor the results. On Facebook, your audience can respond to your poll using images and GIFs as well. cumulated for the purchase of a house, would be far more productive ‘seeding’ his brainwave. His ingenious idea was simply to purchase shares in said company, thus entitling him to receive both the dividend and the capital return portion. And once qualified for this largesse he would then immediately sell the shares. By his estimation the whole process would take no more

than two weeks, which was ample time to have his ‘seed’ money returned in readiness for an impending property settlement. He estimated a 20 per cent profit was in the offing and, according to him, would be the easiest money ever made! Unfortunately, his idea had one major flaw and he was totally oblivious to it. Can you figure out what it was? I will give you the answer next week! So, now that I have conveniently steered the topic of this column toward the potential peril inflicted through lack of basic knowledge. olden has announced pricing and further product details for the allnew Equinox, slated to go on sale in December. With SUV sales booming in Australia during 2017, Equinox has the credentials to take advantage of the trend and battle it out at the top of the mid-size SUV segment, in technology, practicality and performance. Equinox’s enviable list of technology features include active safety aides such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Side Blind Spot Alert, all combining to create a radar-sensor shield to cover the car from every angle. There’s also comfort and infotainment standouts including active noise cancellation, driver’s seat safety alert, heated front and rear seats, hands-free power tailgate and wireless phone charging. Combined with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, nine-speed auto powertrain that boasts more power than its nearest competitor along with the Aussie engineering knowhow that’s ensured Holdens for generations have been great to drive, it’s exciting times for SUV lovers in Australia. “Equinox is a game-changer for Holden and will undoubtedly battle it out at the top of the mid-size SUV segment,” Holden Executive Director – Sales, Michael Filazzola said. Local commentary team locked in ERIN MAMO

T

he Sporting Chance, a local web-casting show, will call all the big games next month at the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens. Next Saturday, December 9, 30 teams will face off at Pitt Park in Wentworth Falls. Sporting Chance host and local resident Matt Poynting said he is looking forward to covering the blockbuster event. “As the commentary partner we will be streaming all the big games live, like we did in January this year for the first ever Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens,” he said. Along with co-host Jono Lees, the pair will also welcome Penrith Emus coach Julian Huxley, NSW Waratah Jed Holloway and NSW Women’s Rugby Sevens coach Nathan McMahon, to their show as guest commentators. Teams set to play on the day include 16 teams in the men’s open division, six teams in the first ever open women’s division, four youth boys teams and four youth girls teams. Traditionally, the competition was open to teams in the local area only but, this year a few wild card teams from the Central Coast, Cronulla, Randwick and Hornsby will enter.

The Sporting Chance will broadcast the upcoming Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens live
