t’s been more than a year since my father has called me with a problem with his computer, phone, iPod, iPad or some other piece of technology that was giving him trouble.

And how I long for that phone call.

Sunday will mark the first Father’s Day I’ll be spending without my Dad. Friday meanwhile will mark a year to the day since he was told he was losing his brave battle with kidney cancer and had only three months to live.

After being delivered that news on September 1 last year, he would be with us for only 24 more days. At 61, he was way too young to leave this planet but over time you come to accept that you’re dealt a hand in life and you simply have to deal with it.

Look at the beautiful young teenager Hannah Rye, who captured our hearts when she attended her school formal with Newcastle Knights rugby league star Trent Hodkinson earlier this year.

She lost her battle with cancer last week at just 15-years-old. She left this world without experiencing most of what it has to offer.

The old saying ‘there is always somebody worse off than you’ is generally always true even if it is cold comfort a lot of the time.

The last 12 months has provided a lot of reflection.

Dad wasn’t really the sentimental type and while Father’s Day will be sad on Sunday it’s not really because of the day itself; moreso because it serves as a reminder that he’s no longer with us.

I am sure I speak for a lot of you who have lost a parent, particularly from illness at a young age.

I don’t think a day has gone by in the last 12 months where I haven’t thought of Dad. The smallest thing will spark a memory.

When Glen Campbell died recently, I thought of Dad’s love of rock ‘n’ roll and country music; and the fact that he’d seen Campbell perform live several times.

Cliff Richard released a new song recently – that was tough because Dad was a huge fan and would have been so thrilled at the arrival of some new material.

Something as little as a TV show like ‘Blue Bloods’ returning prompts reflection; he would always ask me when the latest episode was airing in the US so he could be up to date.

I’m moving house at the moment and the plethora of questions I have about how bits and pieces work are not going to the person I wish they were.

And these last few weeks have been

particularly weird. Father’s Day specials, present ideas, posters in the shops… it makes you realise that for some, these special occasions we celebrate in retail land are tinged with sadness and heavy hearts.

I presume it gets easier over the years.

And not being a father myself yet, I guess there’s a strange gap that is yet to be filled around this time of the year.

With my dad’s death, Father’s Day and his birthday all falling within four weeks of each other, September and October will forever have a tinge of sadness attached for me and my family.

In the year that has passed since he died, the roller coaster of emotions have been in full swing.

There is regret – no matter how much time you spend with somebody, I think this is almost impossible to ignore.

There is laughter – memories and old stories still bring a smile, even if he’s no longer laughing with us.

There is learning – you often learn a lot about yourself and the way you handle a difficult chapter in life.

If you are lucky enough to have your Dad with you, make this Father’s Day a special one.

Too often we can look at days like this as a chore; call it a ‘retail stunt’ or a commercial venture.

But I assure you that when he isn’t around, you’ll wish you had another hundred Father’s Days to spend with him.

If your Dad isn’t around and Sunday is a little tough to deal with, then let’s do it together. Reflect, remember and celebrate. Smile because he was here, don’t cry because he’s gone.

Recruits ready to serve and protect Four new police officers started work in the Blue Mountains last week as latest class graduates Academy ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains community can feel a little safer now that four new police officers have joined the force.

Class 331 welcomed 226 new probationary constables to the NSW Police Force in Goulburn on Friday, August 18.

Of those 226 are Aaron Wright, Shane Woodland, Max Peake and Melissa Shepphard, who will now be based at Springwood Police Station for the next 12 months.

Constable Peake, who grew up in Springwood and attended Saint Thomas Aquinas Primary School and St Columba’s High School, comes from a family of law enforcers with both his father and grandfather serving.

“Policing and policing values surrounded my upbringing and household,” he said.

Now Constable Peak is very excited about what’s next and is keen to give back to the community.

“This community gave so much to me growing up,” he said.

“I loved growing up here and now I will aim to offer local knowledge and be another friendly face in the police force with a passion for serving and protecting

the community that I was raised in.”

NSW Police Commissioner, Mick Fuller, said the new recruits will experience all facets of policing over the next 12 months.

“Police are an integral part of the fabric of the communities they serve and these men and women have worked hard to reach this milestone,” he said.

“As they embark on their new careers, they will uphold the values and honour of what it means to be a NSW police officer.”

Blue Mountains Local Area Command Superintendent, Darryl Jobson, said the new recruits are joining a committed and dedicated team who serve the local community.

“The new recruits have undertaken an arduous program of learning and have demonstrated that they have the tenacity and resolve that is required to be a police officer,” he said.

“In their first 12 months they will build on their training by putting into practice what they learned at the Academy.

“They will be challenged with something different everyday and their training has well-equipped them for those challenges.

“It is an exciting time for them and their families, and I wish them all the very best with their careers, which I know will be very rewarding.”

New Blaxland fire station on the way The Blaxland Rural Fire Brigade station will receive a $1.2 million upgrade to combat ongoing fire threat TROY DODDS

laxland Rural Fire Brigade has more than a million reasons to smile after the State Government confirmed it would build a new station for the crew.

Emergency Services Minister, Troy Grant and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres visited the Blaxland Rural Fire Brigade station last Wednesday to confirm the $1.2 million upgrade.

The new station will replace the current shed with a modern facility to include four truck bays, training amenities and a divisional command post.

Mr Grant said the new station will enable volunteer firefighters to further build upon their firefighting skills.

“Once completed, volunteers will be able to undertake a variety of training courses at the station, such as basic firefighter and crew leader qualifications, making it really convenient for firefighters to enhance their skills,” he said.

“The new station will also serve as a divisional command post during serious emergencies. It will have the necessary infrastructure to manage frontline firefighting resources across the region.”

“The Liberals and Nationals Government continues to place the highest priority on the safety of NSW RFS volunteers, so they can carry out their lifesaving work for generations to come.”

“The current station, which was built by volunteers in the 1970s, has served the Blaxland brigade and local community

well but I am confident the new facility will further boost the NSW RFS’s presence in the region.”

Construction of the new station is likely to commence in coming months.

Mr Grant also visited the Medlow Bath Rural Fire Brigade station to officially handover a new $315,000 Category 1 firefighting tanker, which can hold up to 4,000 litres of water.

emale students from Our Lady of Nativity Primary School in Lawson have been praised by CSIRO’s chief scientific researcher for developing two powerful mobile phone apps.

Students developed the apps as part of Technovation’s Tech Girl Movement, which encourages Australian female school students to identify a problem that exists in their local area and create an app to solve the problem, aligning the app with one of the United Nations Development Goals.

With these instructions two groups of 10 and 11-year-old students developed ‘Outshine the Sun’ and ‘Figures of Hope’.

‘Outshine the Sun’ teaches kids about global warming and what they can do to stop it, while ‘Figures of Hope’ was created to educate kids about poverty and the joy of giving.

The two teams of students, who developed the apps, spent an average of 90 hours working on their projects to get them to where they are now.

Next month the students will attend a conference in Sydney where a competition winner will be announced. The winners will travel to San Francisco.

Mayors demand meeting with Gladys Following recent changes to legislation surrounding DAs, five western Sydney mayors now want answers ERIN MAMO

ayors of five Councils in western Sydney have expressed deep concern over recent changes to NSW Government legislation in relation to development applications.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill along with the Mayors of Campbelltown, Liverpool, Penrith and the Hawkesbury are calling for an urgent meeting with Premier Gladys Berejiklian to discuss what they say is a retrograde piece of legislation.

Earlier this month, NSW Parliament passed a Bill seeking to change the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 so that local Councils will no longer have the power to decide on the outcomes of certain local DAs. Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels (IHAPs) will now be given the authority to decide on the fate of DAs that are worth between $5-30 million, as well as other contentious proposals of lesser value.

Applications fewer than $5 million will be dealt with under delegated authority to Council Chief Executive Officers.

Western Sydney mayors are very concerned over recent changes to DA legislation and it’s essential for them to retain a say in shaping how their suburbs develop.

“That only happens when their elected council representatives have a role in

determining development applications in their own local government areas,” he said.

Each of the five Mayors agreed that there

was no debate around the legislation and no community consultation.

They all acknowledged that this is a removal of the democratic process at a basic level, denying community-elected representatives a say on deciding local development applications.

Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts who, with Minister for Local Government Gabrielle Upton, announced the changes in legislation said that mandatory IHAPs would bring expertise, transparency and integrity to the assessment of DAs at the local level.

“It is essential the Government has a transparent and accountable process in place when assessing DAs of significant value, when there is a conflict of interest for the council or developer, or when they are of a sensitive nature,” Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts pointed out that Wollongong and 15 Sydney metropolitan councils were already successfully using IHAPs on a voluntary basis.

The new Bill will propose a standard model for IHAPs comprising three independent expert members and a community member.

The community member will represent the geographical area of the proposed development to provide local perspective.

The vote was unanimous at last week’s Council meeting to fly the flag from the following day until after the postal plebiscite has been counted.

In his Mayoral Minute, Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the issue of same-sex marriage is really just about human rights.

“I’ve been married twice and no one ever had a say to determine whether either of those went ahead,” he said.

Cr Brent Hoare spoke on the issue, stating that Australia was lagging behind many other countries.

“We should have won this by now,” he said.

Cr Shae Foenander, who is a nurse by trade, told a story of a 95-year-old patient who hadn’t told anyone that he was gay in over 60 years after enduring severe abuse and exposure to shock therapy in his youth because of his sexual orientation.

“No one should ever have to go through their lives without hearing the words ‘I love you’,” Cr Foenander said.

Blue Mountains City Council is supporting same-sex marriage longstanding supporter of social justice and equality, including supporting the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) community.

The Council’s position is guided by the community-endorsed Community Strategic Plan 2035, which identifies the community’s main priorities and aspirations for the future, some of these being that the region is safe, caring, diverse and inclusive.

While the majority of Councillors

supported the Mayoral Minute, Councillors Brendan Christie, Chris Van der Kley and Kevin Schreiber opted to leave the room while Council voted on the issue.

Cr Van der Kley said that while he supports same-sex marriage, the postal vote was a deeply personal issue.

“It’s up to an individual person to make the decision on how to vote,” he said.

Better rental data available For the first time consumers will have access to raw rental bond data, giving them a rare insight into the property market, Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean announced last week.

“As the Minister for Fair Trading I want to put consumers first and this data does that by allowing open, transparent access to useful rental information,” Mr Kean said.

“This untouched data can be analysed by individuals trying to decide where to rent or invest, as well as innovators who could use the data to create apps and other programs to help consumers.

“The comprehensive range of data includes postcodes, rent prices, period of tenure, number of bedrooms and types of dwellings.”

The data is sourced from Rental Bonds Online, the NSW Government’s secure online lodgement system, which currently holds more than 800,000 rental bonds.

Registration is compulsory for property agents and self-managing landlords, and the service must be offered as the first option for new tenants for the lodgement of their bond.

Monthly Rental Bond lodgement data – provided by the agent or landlord at the beginning of a tenancy – includes dwelling type, weekly rent amounts and number of bedrooms. Quarterly data indicates the length of the tenancy and proportion of bond refunded at the end of a lease.

Sydney lost a broadcasting icon when former 2UE star Gary O’Callaghan passed away at the age of 83.

O’Callaghan was a legend of Sydney radio, pioneering the current breakfast format heard on stations across the dial. He was the first Australian broadcaster to include live traffic reports as part of his programs. Best known for his coverage of the Petrov affair and his sidekick Sammy Sparrow, O’Callaghan was at 2UE from 1956 until 2003. He will be sadly missed.

Locals needed for bushfire safety survey ERIN MAMO

ith bushfire season just around the corner, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and the University of Wollongong are conducting a survey with the aim of improving community bushfire safety.

The two organisations are asking anyone who lives in a bushfire prone area to take roughly 30 minutes out of their day to complete the questionnaire.

NSW RFS Commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons, said the research will focus on community preparedness and actions taken during the fire conditions across January, February and March this year.

“Earlier this year we experienced the worst ever fire weather conditions in NSW, with large parts of the state affected by forecast catastrophic fire danger and several areas being impacted by significant fires,” he said.

“This research will help the NSW RFS and other fire services across the country better understand the community’s perception of the bush fire risk and how people prepare for it.

“It’s important that we look closely at these events and how the community responded, to learn and improve.”

Locals impacted by recent bushfires are asked to fill out a survey to improve safety

The survey will look at how people received information and warnings during the fires, to see if there are other systems or steps that can be taken to improve the way that the RFS gets information out to communities.

Once the study is complete, a report with recommendations for improving community bushfire safety will be written for the NSW RFS. Findings from the research may also be reported at scientific conferences and in research journals.

The university are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was directly threatened or impacted by bushfires in NSW during the summer of 2016-2017.

The survey is anonymous and can be completed online by anyone over 18 before Sunday, September 10.

The survey follows face-to-face interviews with researchers and people in bushfire affected areas earlier this year.

Recollecting aspects of a bushfire can be emotionally distressing.

The RFS advises that should you require support, Lifeline Australia provides telephone crisis support on 13 11 14.

It’s time for Marriage Equality We didn’t have a survey for the other 20 changes to the Marriage Act, and we don’t need one now.

Parliament created these laws and the cheapest, quickest way to amend the laws would be to have a Parliamentary vote. It could be done next week, when Parliament sits again.

However, the Turnbull Government has made its decision and, unless the High Court says otherwise, the postal survey will go ahead.

So for people, like me, who think it’s time for marriage equality, this is not just about having a say, but also about actively encouraging others to vote YES. What has been impressive is the number of people who have updated their enrolments or enrolled for the first time, particularly young people. I know of one young man, living with his lesbian aunts in the Mountains, who has never bothered to enrol to vote in an election, but has now taken the step to ensure his aunts are able to have their long term union recognised.

There are people on both sides of Parliament who support same sex marriage, but this vote won’t be decided by politicians.

There is going to be a lot said about marriage equality over the next few weeks. The Government’s postal survey is, in my mind, a total waste of money.

Can the Government not think of even ONE thing that might be a better use of $122 million than a non-binding, noncompulsory survey?

I can. Whether it’s investing in our local community facilities, mental health services or boosting employment opportunities, there are dozens of ways you could actually make a difference with $122 million. In the Mountains alone there are a dozen projects that could be funded in a heartbeat, not least a new library for Lapstone Public or improvements to Springwood High School’s aging buildings. The list of what is being neglected by the State and Federal Governments means there’s no shortage of need.

Nor do we need a survey. The issue has been surveyed endlessly, with the results routinely showing that more than half the country supports marriage equality. We didn’t have a postal survey on the Race Discrimination Act, the Sex Discrimination Act, Native Title legislation, scrapping of the White Australia policy or whether women should get equal pay.

Chef to showcase Mountains to world Celebrity chef Luke Nguyen filmed segments for his new SBS show ‘Food Diaries’ in the local area he Greater Blue Mountains region will be showcased to billions of potential tourism visitors when SBS airs the next Luke Nguyen cultural foodie series early next year.

The celebrity chef spent a whirlwind two days in the area recently, filming interviews with food producers in the Jamison and Megalong valleys; visits to cultural identities such as the Escarpment Group-owned Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath; fusion cooking at Echoes Restaurant; and inspiration gathering sessions with Darley’s Restaurant Hatted executive chef Lee Kwiez.

The SBS ‘Food Diaries’ series, which will be shown in 160 countries, will trace Mr Nguyen’s journey from his childhood roots and connections in Vietnam to his first restaurant in Surry Hills and his current international success.

Escarpment Group director Huong Nguyen has known Mr Nguyen (no relation) since he was a child, growing up in his family’s restaurant at Cabramatta.

“Our fathers were both in the military before the war ended in 1975 and his family came to Australia shortly after mine,” she said.

Mr Nguyen is best known as the host of television series ‘Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam’ and ‘Luke Nguyen’s Street Food Asia’. He is also a judge on ‘MasterChef Vietnam’ and has appeared several times on ‘MasterChef Australia’ as guest chef.

Mr Nguyen also owns a cooking school and restaurants in Hong Kong and Vietnam, the Red Lantern in Surry Hills, Fat Noodle in The Star Sydney and the Treasury Hotel & Casino in Brisbane, and has penned several cookbooks.

“Now Luke is bringing Australia to the world,” Ms Nguyen said.

“Yes, Luke’s latest series is definitely a fantastic showcase of our Blue Mountains properties, but it’s also great exposure for the region and will introduce millions, if not billions, of viewers throughout the world to the abundance of fresh regional produce available to them when they visit any restaurant, café, B&B or hotel that offers local flavours on their menus here.”

Two sides to the story The same-sex marriage debate has produced two camps which are at war with each other and who can’t see that there are two points of view on this question. They may both have a point.

The religious community rely on the Bible for their outlook on marriage and how it works. The same-sex community believe they have been left out of the picture when it comes to committed relationships. If we don’t want an ongoing war on this matter it may be wiser to let the religious community have their marriage ceremony and for the same-sex community to be invited to create a new name for their ceremony. They should have the same legal rights as everyone else and that is where the real equality will be satisfied. Could we all be a little more reasonable about this and get down off our soap boxes to settle the matter in a way which will give our society more peace and cohesion in the future.

here are many articles for business owners that describe the qualities it takes to be successful. And there are just as many detailing the qualities that tend to result in an unsuccessful venture. Ironically, those traits are often the same: that is, the same things that can propel a business owner to greatness, can also hold them back.

The two traits most likely to fall into both lists is confidence and self-reliance. Both of these traits are inherently good, but an abundance of one or the other can lead a business owner to think they are capable of doing everything with no help from anyone else.

Of course, many of us start out in business with no choice but to ‘do everything’. Limited finances and slow growth can create a situation where everything from marketing to accounting to product development is done solely by you! But some business owners fool themselves into thinking that this is the only way to operate, even after revenue does start rising.

This is often due to a couple of fairly common character flaws: arrogance and

dis-trust. It may be difficult to admit that someone else might be able to do something as good as we can. Business owners can convince themselves that no one else can be trusted to do the job the way they want it done. The problem is, an overextended business owner will wind up producing inconsistent, low quality work. And it can cement a business in maintenance mode, rather than growth mode: who has time to strategise when you are entrenched in the day-to-day details?

The most successful business owners are those who have confidence in their own abilities, but who also have realistic views of their talents, strengths and weaknesses. They also recognise that there are limited hours in a day, and therefore delegation may be required, even in areas of strength.

Effective leaders exhibit humility.

Humbly acknowledging limitations in time or skill sets has a twofold benefit: it creates more time for the business owner, and it shows employees and colleagues a willingness to learn and collaborate.

ne of the most common questions people ask about social media is how often they should be posting their content on the platforms they use.

The answer is, there is no across the board rule for how often you should post, but with some experimenting and monitoring, you can definitely figure out what works for your business and the platforms you are using.

You don’t want to over post, so that you lose your fans and followers by flooding them with content, yet you don’t want to under post, so that you get lost within the social world or look like you don’t actively use your socials to promote your brand and keep in touch with your clients/ customers.

For Facebook and Instagram, as a general rule, you’ll want to start with a post at least once every day. As a bare minimum, start with at least three to four posts per week.

First, this gives your followers consistency; people will be more likely to continue following you if you’re providing them with a consistent flow

of content. Second, this shows your commitment to being active. New prospective followers who browse through your older posts will see how consistent you are in posting every day, and will be more likely to follow you.

Twitter and other fast-paced feeds, typically favour multiple posts per day.

Time is crucial when it comes to social media posts. For example, most platforms see a spike in activity after people finish work between 5pm and 8pm. You can aim to post at the most popular usage times to get in front of more people, but keep in mind that others are pursuing this strategy as well—it may be worth testing your posts during off times, when your content is less likely to be lost amongst the noise – possibly before work or during lunch breaks.

Use this as a guide for the rest of your socials too, as people tend to browse different platforms at the same time.

3. Someone close passes away. Money is at its most superficial when a loved one passes. But you still need to travel interstate for the funeral, and an emergency fund keeps the expenses off your credit card.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

hile it’s common in the music world to take classic tracks and either remix them or sample them on contemporary hits, it seems some music is best left alone.

1940’s big band The Glenn Miller Orchestra is one such example.

“Audiences expect to hear the band play the tunes virtually identical to the way they were recorded 80 years ago,” Music Director, Rick Gerber (pictured) said.

“Any attempt to put beatbox solos or something else in it just doesn’t work,” he laughed.

“We play them the way they were intended to be played, we don’t ‘modernise’ them with electronics or with a rock ‘n’ roll beat.”

Known as one of the greatest big bands of the 1940’s, The Glenn Miller Orchestra is responsible for unforgettable musical arrangements from the Golden Era of Swing including ‘Chattanooga ChooChoo’, ‘In the Mood’, ‘Tuxedo Junction’, ‘A String of Pearls’, ‘Moonlight Serenade’, ‘Little Brown Jug’ and ‘Pennsylvania 6-5000’.

This year the orchestra is celebrating its 80th anniversary, and it’s clear from the constant sold-out tours and numerous trips to our shores that audiences are just as in love with the music as they were in the 40’s.

“Our unique jazz sound is sought all around the world and in addition to recreating the golden era of swing, we bring to life the colour, costumes and spirit,” Rick said.

Helping to continue the legacy of these World War II era melodies is fans from the 40’s who’ve passed the music down through the generations.

It’s something that Rick has noticed in the audiences who’ve come to see the show during his 16 years with the orchestra.

“Very often the adult children will bring their parents to the show, and the adult children will have their kids to bring along as well,” he said.

As with the audiences the 22-memberstrong Glen Miller Orchestra has become its own musical family, with many of the lead musicians having played for a decade or more.

It’s the passion for this classic era of music that keeps them working hard to perfect a show whose nostalgia has been embraced so warmly by fans around the world.

“For the two hours we’re up there on stage there’s probably 100 hours behind the scenes,” Rick laughed.

“But it’s in my blood, as it is for all the musicians.”

Featuring the smash hit Queen song ‘Somebody to Love’, fans are calling it one of the best and funniest promos for a new TV show in a long time. ‘The Bachelorette’ will premiere straight after this season of ‘The Bachelor’, which has less than a month remaining.

Ê Shane Jacobson’s new show ‘Little Big Shots’ finally went to air on Sunday night.

Seven were due to screen it in July but were scared off after the success of ‘Ninja Warrior’ on Nine. It airs again this Sunday.

A delicious recipe to try at home with the family Add some spice to your weekly meal routine with this great recipe from a local chef...

chopped spring onions and stir-fry for a few seconds, until fragrant. Add the pork and half the ground sichuan pepper and stir-fry for 4-5 minutes, until browned, using a wooden spoon to break up any clumps of pork. Stir in the chilli bean paste, dark and light soy sauces, stock and sugar. Cook until the liquid has almost evaporated. Set aside.

4. Cook the noodles in a pan of boiling water for 2-3 minutes, until slippery and tender. Drain and put into a large serving bowl. Pour the pork sauce over the noodles and top with the chilled cucumber and shredded spring onion. Serve with the remaining sichuan pepper, to sprinkle over the top.

Ingredients: • 1 Lebanese (short) cucumber • 3 spring onions (scallions) • 2 teaspoons sichuan peppercorns • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 5cm (2 inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated • 500g (1lb 2oz) minced (ground) pork • 3 tablespoons chilli bean paste • 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce • 60ml (2fl oz/cup) chicken stock • ½ teaspoon sugar • 100g (3½oz) fresh udon noodles Method: 1. Cut the ends off the cucumber and roughly peel. Cut into matchsticks and refrigerate until needed. Finely

udgee’s Robert Stein Winery and Vineyard was established in the mid-1970s but the family’s connection with Australian wine goes back to 1838, when Johann Stein migrated from Germany and brought with him our first riesling cuttings.

They apparently thrived under his supervision at Camden Park, the Macarthur family’s property not far from Sydney. Johann’s brother, Jacob, established his own vineyard, Sandal Farm, also towards Sydney’s south-west.

In 1976, Robert Stein revived the family’s connection with wine when he planted vines at Mudgee, and the rest, as they say, is history. Robert was helped by his son Andrew in establishing the

vineyard and grandson Jacob is now the winemaker at one of the district’s most acclaimed wineries.

Jacob and his team produce quite a broad range of wines, but, understandably, given their Germanic roots, are particularly proud of their rieslings.

Robert Stein 2017 Riesling Citrus and floral notes are obvious here. I’m drinking it on its own as an aperitif, and its dry and highly moreish, but I’d also like to try it with some freshly caught, quickly seared whitefleshed fish such as bream.

Robert Stein 2017 Half-Dry Riesling Like its completely dry brother, the wine has some bracing acidity but shows more fullness of flavour.

alented 12-year-old Cayden Henderson is preparing to compete in the Pacific School Games in Adelaide this December after being selected in the U12s NSW soccer team.

The Faulconbridge Public School student discovered he made the squad after his team, Sydney West, won the State playoffs in Inverell last week.

Cayden, who has been playing soccer since he was five, said it was a shock to get selected.

“It was amazing to win the State tournament, against teams from all over NSW,” he said.

“Then to get selected on top of that for the Pacific School Games was awesome.”

Last week’s game saw Sydney West come up against Hunter in the final, with Cayden’s side prevailing 1-0 in a tight encounter.

Cayden was just one of two local boys who made it into the Sydney West team, the other being his cousin, Owen.

“My cousin and I have been playing soccer together for a long time,” the youngster said.

“It’s awesome that we get to play and train together.”

Cayden will start training with his Pacific Blue Mountains cousins and soccer sensations Owen and Cayden Henderson with their School Games teammates next week.
