Top authors to grace the Mountains Australian novelist Di Morrissey leads all-star cast of authors at the Sydney Writers’ Festival ERIN MAMO

slew of talented authors are coming to the Blue Mountains as part of the 2017 Sydney Writers’ Festival including highly regarded Australian novelist Di Morrissey.

From Saturday, May 27 to Tuesday, May 30, Katoomba Library, Varuna House and the Carrington Hotel will host the acclaimed writers, giving them a platform to showcase their current work and inspire future novelists.

On Saturday, Varuna, also known as ‘The Writers’ House’ where budding writers seek refuge to fully immerse themselves into their craft, will invite locals in to listen to poet Vanessa Kirkpatrick.

The Katoomba-based artist will lead a workshop for people who are inclined to exercise their own poetic craft and give them a chance to share their work.

Saturday’s program will also include an event at Katoomba Library, where audiences can hear inspirational insights about the highs and lows of becoming published from authors Lisa Chaplin, Catherine Cole, Craig Cormick and Malcolm Knox, who is a Sydney Morning Herald journalist and author of The Wonder Lover.

Then on Monday, May 29, the prolific Di Morrissey will be at the Carrington to talk about her journey.

Although Ms Morrissey has written 24 successful novels, she admits she still doesn’t feel qualified to tell aspiring authors how to achieve because she still questions if she is doing it right.

“I still worry if people will like what I write,” she told the Record.

“I will answer questions people have the best I can but I don’t know that I can give specific advice on how to succeed.

“I think with writing, like a lot of art forms, you either have it or you don’t.”

Ms Morrissey, whose fictional books are mostly based in Australia, said she often doesn’t know how her book will play out until she is writing it.

“I don’t often have a plan for how the book will go,” she said.

“I usually let it play out chapter by chapter, I think you have to be open.”

Another famous face, Witi Ihimaera, who wrote Whale Rider and most recently worked on the hit Disney kids’ film ‘Moana’ will also be a part of the festival at the Carrington Hotel on Monday, May 29.

Food and sustainable living on show The Upper Mountains will once again play host to the popular Leura Harvest Festival this Sunday ERIN MAMO

he local community is expected to gather in numbers this weekend in Leura to celebrate food and sustainable living.

The fourth annual Leura Harvest Festival is on this Sunday, May 7 and will honour the Blue Mountains region’s natural food bowl and showcase the latest in sustainable living initiatives.

With over 75 stores registered to attend, the event will take place in Leura Mall with stall holders displaying solar-powered cars, upcycled fashion and jewellery, handcrafted ceramics, handmade beauty products, art and locally produced wines and ciders.

Leura Harvest Festival Vice President, Piercarlo Cuneo, said local support has ensured the annual festival will be the biggest yet.

“This is a magnificent time to be in Leura with the changing colours of the season as we celebrate harvest time,” he said.

“The festival is a wonderful celebration of all the unique and progressive initiatives taking place throughout the Mountains region.”

New clinic to tackle obesity head-on Nepean Hospital is now home to Australia’s first ever family-centred obesity clinic EMILY NEWTON

he Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District launched Australia’s first ever family-centred obesity clinic to help educate and treat families that struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle last week.

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard joined Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres to officially open the $1 million Nepean Blue Mountains Family Obesity Service that will help thousands of families break the cycle of obesity.

“It is very significant that we try and come together to really put an emphasis on what we can do proactively about obesity,” Mr Hazzard said.

“To have the Family Obesity Service here in Nepean Blue Mountains is absolutely fantastic.”

The service draws on the expertise of specialists including doctors, dietitians, endocrinologists, paediatricians, psychologists, nurses and midwives to work together in tackling obesity.

Patients, including pregnant women, children and adults, are referred to the free service by their regular GP. With 60 per cent of people either over-

Woman falls off horse in Megalong Valley At about 3.30pm on Saturday, April 18, a 54-year-old female from Waverton fell off a horse while riding in the Megalong Valley.

The horse got a fright and stood up on its hind legs causing the rider to fall.

The woman suffered facial injuries and possible spinal injuries.

She was air-lifted to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.

Glenbrook pair busted after drug plants and seeds found At around 8am on Thursday, April 13, police executed a search warrant at an address on Hillside Crescent in Glenbrook.

As a result of the warrant, police located and seized a number of cannabis plants and cannabis seeds.

A 52-year-old male and a 53-year-old female were arrested at the location, and were both charged with the offences of ‘cultivate prohibited plant’ and ‘possess prohibited drug’.

The pair will now appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, June 13.

Fight breaks out at Bullaburra Station, man’s nose broken On Friday, April 21, at around 1.30am, a 40-year-old man from Linden and a 32-year-old man from Leura were involved in a heated argument at Bullaburra Railway Station which turned physical.

The 40-year-old man grabbed the 32-year-old man’s head and kneed him in the face numerous times.

As a result of the assault, the victim sustained a broken nose and was sent to Katoomba Hospital for further treatment.

The attacker was arrested at the scene and taken to Springwood Police Station and charged with the offences of ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and ‘affray’.

He was refused bail and appeared before Penrith Local Court on the same day as the offence, where bail was formally refused.

The man is now due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Thursday June 1.

Bushwalker stumbles upon human remains in Blackheath On Wednesday, April 19, a bushwalker was walking in dense bushland near Shipley Road, Blackheath, when the individual came across human remains.

Due to the terrain, the remains were extracted by police the following morning and a report will now be prepared for the Coroner.

Vehicles collide on busy Great Western Highway At about 5.30am on Friday, April 21, a collision occurred between a utility and a heavy vehicle on the Great Western Highway, Bullaburra.

The occupant of the utility, a 41-year-old male, was trapped for a short time and then removed from the vehicle by Police Rescue Units.

The male was air lifted to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Why your phone is a pain in the neck Local chiropractors are concerned with the amount of patients presenting with ‘text neck’ ERIN MAMO

oncerned chiropractors from across the state are being kept busy because of a new condition coined ‘text neck’.

According to a recent survey released by the Chiropractors’ Association of NSW (CAANSW), chiropractors are seeing between 11-20 patients a week suffering from chronic neck pain, headaches, poor posture and repetitive strain injuries in the wrist and hands from texting.

Chiropractor Mykel Densley, from Glenbrook Chiropractic Centre, said he isn’t surprised by the latest survey results.

“A large percentage of clients that I see here present with posture issues due to excessive mobile phone use,” he told the Record.

“The head and neck are not designed to be in a forward head carriage position for long periods of time.”

According to the latest survey, it’s not just teenagers or the younger generations who are experiencing health issues due to the condition.

a weekly basis were adults and 45 per cent were teenagers.

“I have one patient in his mid 40s who is experiencing a lot of hand and arm pain and discomfort because he uses his mobile for work and regularly checks emails,” he said.

Dr de Voy, who owns and operates a chiropractic clinic in Sydney, said he is seeing an increasing number of patients who have more complex issues stemming from their overuse of mobile devices and technology.

“Postural bad habits over time can develop into more serious health conditions such as spinal degenerative disease, osteoarthritis, hunchback and reduced mobility,” he said.

“CAANSW is now encouraging more health policy makers to address the dangers of text neck disorder and smartphone addiction.

“Already, 84 per cent of people worldwide are addicted to smartphones and 81 per cent of smartphone users have their mobile phone switched on all of the time even when they are in bed or in the bathroom.

“We see smartphone addiction and text neck as a serious health risk and something that needs to be addressed.”

The Penrith Panthers will be playing in Bathurst for the next 10 years, with the NRL club signing a new deal with Bathurst Council last week.

The agreement continues a partnership that began in 2014 and has already seen the Panthers play three NRL fixtures at Carrington Park in Bathurst. The new deal sees Penrith travelling to Bathurst until at least 2028. The Panthers face the Canberra Raiders at Carrington Park on Saturday, June 10.

Charming upgrade for local lookout Tourists and locals will enjoy Chalmers Lookout even more thanks to recent much-needed upgrades ERIN MAMO

halmers Lookout, which offers views of Glenbrook Gorge and the Nepean River, has been upgraded

by Blue Mountains Council.

Council recently contributed $30,000 towards the project to improve the viewing platform, replace the safety railing, formalise the natural stairs and install sandstone block seats to admire the amazing view.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said the lookout is a local gem in a network of walking tracks and lookouts on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Mountains.

“To be able to experience the expansive vista of natural bushland and enjoy quiet solitude so close to an urban setting is wonderful,” he said.

As well as funding from Council, the upgrade was made possible by a $20,000 grant from the State Government’s Community Building Partnerships Program, which supports projects that deliver positive social, environmental or recreational outcomes.

Council staff used an innovative approach, including the use of a lightweight aluminium gantry used in the

mining industry, to manoeuvre half tonne sandstone blocks into place without damaging the bushland.

Chalmers Lookout was named in 1932

after Hugh Chalmers, who was the Founding Member of Faulconbridge Progress Association and contributed to the Blue Mountains community significantly during his time.

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, who recently visited the lookout, said natural areas play an important role in how Blue Mountains residents spend their recreation time.

“It is important that public spaces are as accessible as possible,” he said.

Council’s Draft Masterplan for the Scenic Eastern Escarpment is currently on display, and Council are encouraging Blue Mountains’ residents to make comment before submissions close on Wednesday, May 31.

The eastern escarpment extends from Darks Common in Lapstone, adjoining the Blue Mountains National Park, to Knapsack Reserve in Glenbrook connecting with Yellomundee Regional Park in Yellow Rock.

The objectives of the Master Plan is to guide the future development of recreational infrastructure, improve recreational and tourism opportunities in the region and support the promotion of the site’s cultural and nature-based recreational opportunities.

ecently my eight-year-old and I were cycling around Centennial Park in a two-seater pedal bike. He could barely reach the pedals, so my idea of a leisurely cycle around the park went out the window! But on our two laps of the park, I was given some food for thought in relation to running a business: 1. Work together. Our two-pedal bike became much harder to propel if we didn’t work together. This didn’t mean that we both always pedalled at the same time (although that did make things easier!): at times it was good to give each other a break. But it was vital that we encouraged each other to keep going. And important that we lifted the spirits of the other when the going got tough. Sound like a good way to operate with your business partners?

2. Focus on what’s in front of you.

Each lap of the park was a long distance and being circular, we couldn’t see the end. So it was important to focus on the immediate step or challenge, not just the

end goal. We set our sights on each incline in front of us and put our efforts into making it that far. There was always a flat or slightly downhill section where we could recharge, ready for the next hill. But if we had only focused on a goal that was out of sight, we would probably have given up. It helped immensely to break down our journey into ‘doable’ sections. This is no different for your business journey: break tasks and challenges into achievable, smaller actions and focus on getting those done. Before you know it, your goal will be closer and you will achieve what you set out to do.

3. Competition is good. Although we weren’t competing in a race, we had decided that we couldn’t let the other pedal bikes beat us to the end. This spurred us on to push that bit harder and provided us with additional goals. Likewise in business, our competitors can provide motivation to keep searching for better ways to conduct our business to get an edge on the competition.

hilst it is important to have a presence on social media, it is also important to ensure you keep your socials appealing and relevant to your audience.

Relevant Content Treat your socials like a portfolio and a communication platform to engage your audience and keep them updated with the latest and greatest. Create posts that are relevant to your business and don’t just post for the sake of it.

Be Creative In addition to posting consistently, try using vocabulary, images and video that appeal to your target audience (age, gender etc) to connect with them on their level. If you are photographing your product or service, keep the theme consistent so your fans recognise your posts instantly and visually associate your posts with your business.

Don’t delete negative comments and reviews. Respond to them professionally, be apologetic and offer a solution like a discount or some free coffee cards. Your other followers will appreciate your great customer service and won’t be so quick to judge any negative comments and reviews. Business owners are human, too!

This is for all you existing shareholders, as well as trustees SMSF’s that contain share investments. Normally, as an investor, you wait for the dividend cheque every six months and for the rest of the time the shares are in the proverbial bottom draw. Well go and dig them out because with a little know how, you can extract money every

month. It’s done through what are termed Covered Calls. Quite simply, you sell an option giving the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to purchase your shares at a predetermined price at a point in the future (usually month’s end).

Now the reason someone buys this option is because they believe those shares are currently undervalued and will go up. But they can’t be certain. So to avoid outlaying huge sums of money, on a hunch, they outlay a fraction of the cost for an option. On the other hand, the seller of the option (you) believe the opposite is true and the share price will remain flat.

The transaction is all about setting the right sale price of the option. This is where the ‘know how’ is needed. The desired outcome is for the option to just expire, meaning you keep your shares, plus pocket the premium received for selling the option. Should the option be exercised, you do have to sell the shares but you also have the option premium.

Make sure you get some professional advice before you do anything, so talk to your financial adviser or broker.

This is a very reliable strategy when done correctly, so do some research.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

Makings of a rock star

hen we first met Jimmy Barnes in his e a r l y C o l d Chisel days it was clear he had the makings of a rock star.

But behind that iconic voice and frenetic on-stage personality was a damaged man struggling to cope with the scars of an abusive childhood.

It’s this Jimmy that fans have been introduced to through his best-selling autobiography Working Class Boy. The process of putting his life on the page wasn’t easy, but for Jimmy it drew attention to some important lessons.

“One of the main things I learned is that old adage of what doesn’t kill you makes you strong,” he told the Record.

“A lot of things that nearly killed me as a kid moulded me into being the sort of person I am as a rock singer.

“When I joined Cold Chisel I was aggressive, I was needy, I wanted people to like me, which is really important when you’re a rock ‘n’ roll singer.

“But by the end, because I hadn’t dealt with those issues, they nearly killed me again.”

These days Jimmy Barnes has learned to control his demons by facing up to his struggles and seeking support.

“You’ve got to get help, talk to friends,

talk to professionals – I went and saw a therapist for years because I was out of control,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter how tough you are.

Look how blessed I was, how lucky I was.

I was successful, at the top of my game, I had good people around me, but it was still killing me.”

By sharing his story Jimmy has found he’s also opened the door for others to do the same.

“I’ve had people slipping me notes during shopping centre meet and greets saying ‘help me I’m in a violent relationship’, or ‘I have alcoholic parents’, or ‘I’m an alcoholic, help me I’m out of control and I’m hurting my family’,” Jimmy said.

“The first stage in a lot of this stuff is just to talk to people. If you can get people to open up then you can start the healing process and start change.”

Though he himself is a changed man,

Jimmy says there’s certain struggles that never go away, like those pre-gig nerves.

Luckily though his coping strategy has changed since the Cold Chisel days.

“I used to drink and get smashed a lot because I would get so nervous,” he said.

“When I get up there now I’m still as nervous, it’s still like doing your first show, but the energy is probably more focused.”

That focused energy will be on show when Jimmy, along with fellow rock icons Jon Stevens and Diesel, head to Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa this weekend.

This is the first event of its kind at the historic estate and, for Jimmy, it’s an opportunity to embrace his loyal fans.

“There’s a lot of reasons for me to do this show but I guess first and foremost is that this is the location of fans who’ve been following me for the last 30 to 40 years,” he said.

“I’m really happy to come out and do a festival of this standard in the heartland of my supporters.

“It’s a good location and a good bill, we just need a good audience and we’re ready to rock.”

As for whether he will take his life from the stage to the screen Jimmy says he has been approached about a biopic and he is open to the idea, but only if it’s honest.

“I don’t want to sensationalise any of this stuff,” he said.

“I don’t want to go out and make a movie about me being wild and reckless when it should be about being damaged and the struggle to try to make life work.”

The virtual band behind mega hits like ‘Feel Good Inc.’ and ‘Clint Eastwood’ is back with the release of their new studio album ‘Humanz’.

The politically-charged release features a host of guest artists on tracks that take influence from a range of genres.

Before the album’s release the band premiered singles ‘Ascension’, ‘Andromeda’, ‘We Got the Power’ and ‘Saturnz Barz’, which also featured an animated video. The tracks have already racked up millions of views on YouTube.

It’s the band’s fifth release and the first since 2010’s ‘Plastic Beach’ and ‘The Fall’.

Early reviews have been mostly positive, suggesting ‘Humanz’ will be another hit for the animated group.

It may have been caught up in that infamous Oscars bungle, but ‘Moonlight’ is more than deserving of its own spotlight.

The film focuses on the themes of identity, friendship, family and love as it follows the life of a young black man Chiron (Ashton Sanders) who’s growing up in a rough area of Miami.

‘Moonlight’ takes audiences through three defining chapters from childhood to adulthood as it explores contemporary

African American life.

‘Moonlight’ has earned plenty of critical acclaim, taking home awards for Best Picture at the Oscars and the Golden Globes, and earning Oscars for supporting cast members Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.

Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes described the film as ‘a remarkable and brilliantly crafted look at lives too rarely seen in cinema’.

CINEMA Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Rated M

This week Star-Lord and his fellow misfits are back on the big screen in the latest Marvel release ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’.

This follow-up to the hugely successful 2014 film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sees the team continue on their adventures through the outer reaches of the cosmos.

As they seek to uncover the mystery behind Peter Quill’s parentage, the group must fight to keep their newly formed family together.

During their adventure, fan-favourites from the classic comics will come to their aid, as old foes become new allies.

The film franchise is led by action’s newest golden boy Chris Pratt as Peter

Quill/Star-Lord.

Pratt is joined on-screen by Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket and Vin Diesel as the voice of Baby Groot.

With the debut film winning plenty of fans for its humour and heart, there’s no doubt that this sequel has huge shoes to fill.

There’s also an appearance by John Travolta, the star of ‘Saturday Night Fever’.

The 10-part series follows a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world. “The mythical tale of the Monkey King is a story that continues to captivate global audiences,” said Michael Carrington, Head of Children’s at ABC Television. ‘The Legend of Monkey’ will air on the ABC next year.

Have you ever wondered why your dog destructively chews?

All dogs chew from time to time but did you know that there are plenty of ways to occupy them so they don’t chew on your shoes or mobile phones?

Chewing is one of the most common and frustrating problems that dog owners encounter. Dogs will often become destructive when they are bored.

Boredom can occur if dogs are not given enough ways to release their energy and occupy their minds. Other causes of chewing are exploratory behaviour and anxiety.

It is important that you engage in regular activities with your dog to provide social, physical and mental enrichment. Dogs also thrive on routine and will generally look forward to their daily walk, run or ball/frisbee game. High energy dogs and working breeds may need more strenuous exercise to keep them interested.

There are many options like flyball, agility training or swimming.

Toys are a fantastic way of occupying dogs when they are left alone. Select toys that are appealing to your dog. Play toys should be big enough that they cannot be swallowed and not harmful or toxic if broken apart. Toys that have an interesting texture, scent or sound may

help to maintain your dog’s interest for as long as possible. Toys that can be coated or stuffed with food are ideal. These will keep dogs entertained and they self-reward when the food is released!

Animals love to explore and you can encourage exploratory play by hiding food throughout the environment.

Tug games can also be fun and will allow your dog to burn lots of energy. It is important that toys are durable and designed for tugging games. Train your dog to release the toy by offering more desirable treats or another toy as a reward during play. Be sure that your pet shows no signs of aggression when playing tug games. If your dog becomes possessive

or aggressive during tug games, immediately stop tug games and contact your veterinarian.

Even if your dog has sufficient exercise, play and toys, it may still explore and chew household possessions. Make sure that desirable objects such as shoes, socks, mobiles, tablets and chargers are kept away from dogs when they are unsupervised. If you catch your dog chewing on something inappropriate, make a gentle sound (like a ‘whistle’ sound) to distract your dog and give it an alternative toy to chew on. This rewards your dog for releasing the inappropriate item and allows it to chew on an appropriate toy.

With such skill and patience, Bianca proceeds to place the lashes onto my eyes with the room set to a certain temperature to allow the semi-permanent glue to dry nicely!

hile residents remembered our brave ANZACSs through services across the Blue Mountains last Tuesday, Rotary Club of Blackheath held their annual ANZAC Day Golf Classic fundraiser.

Raising money for important local and international projects, this year’s golf day included lunch, an auction and ANZAC dusk service.

President of Blackheath Rotary, Andrew Hancock, said the four-ball ambrose tournament was very successful.

“We had 69 golfers participate,” he said.

“I haven’t got the official figures yet but we raised around $20,000, which will go to the return of the rocket.”

Blackheath Rotary have been raising money to fund bringing back the rocket slide at Blackheath Soldiers Memorial Park after Council approved their proposal in August last year.

Mr Hancock said the annual golf day has

now brought them even closer to reaching the total amount of funds they need to start building the rocket.

“Our target to have the rocket built and reinstalled has always been around the $75,000 mark,” he said.

“I’m confident that after the recent golf day we are at around $40,000. We want the public to know that if they continue to donate, that we will be pretty close to getting there.”

Kit Newcombe, Adam Preen, Steve Caswell and Andrew King were crowned champions.
