he argument over whether an independent panel or Blue Mountains City Council itself should determine the future of the well-known Wayzgoose building in Leura continues.

At last Tuesday’s Council meeting, an item was on the agenda for Council to approve the process of establishing an Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel (IHAP) for the purpose of assessing Council’s development application for 170-174 Leura Mall.

Independent Councillor Shae Foenander said she wouldn’t usually condone sending powers elsewhere but, as a collective, Council had already experienced a lot of scrutiny about the on-going issue.

“We have had a lot of scrutiny for not handling this issue correctly,” she said.

Cr Foenander added that this particular development application had become a political matter because of a few Councillors who insisted on getting involved in the issue, attending fundraisers and constantly speaking to the media.

Councillor Kerry Brown, who assumed Cr Foenander was talking about her, said the issue was not political rather privatised.

The Wayzgoose building’s future will be decided by an independent panel “This was a process that was privatised by me not being able to have access to Council reports before I was a Councillor,” Cr Brown said.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said he agrees that Council should be dealing with all development applications in chambers.

“I agree we should be dealing with this matter in Council but I won’t be voting in favour of it tonight,” Cr Greenhill said.

“I think if we make this decision it runs the risk of ruining our reputation.”

In the end it was a tight vote, with six Councillors in favour of the motion and six against it. Cr Greenhill then used his casting vote as Mayor to pass the motion.

Now, an independent panel will assess the pending development application and the future of the Wayzgoose building.

Bin fight rages on in Council The great waste debate continued in Council chambers last week.

Unhappy residents sat front and centre holding their banners, shaking their heads and even interjecting into Council’s debate, fighting for the refund they believe they deserve for being charged for two waste services for a number of years.

‘What part of it’s their money don’t BMCC understand?’, read one of the angry resident’s banners as Councillor Kerry Brown took to the floor to again fight for her constituents.

As part of a rescission motion, Cr Brown said she wants Council to remove the resolution from last month’s meeting where it was decided that residents would only be reimbursed for a maximum of five years worth of overcharging.

“This money isn’t ours,” Cr Brown said.

Wentworth Falls resident Eric Brown said he is disappointed and angry that Council won’t return the full amount of money that they took in error from locals.

Mr Brown said ideally he would like to see the full amount of money returned to residents but that if that cannot happen then a percentage of what each resident has paid in error should be returned.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill stood by his original position that if Council was to reimburse the residents who have been overcharged for their waste service in full, that it could come at a cost to other ratepayers.

The rescission motion was lost but residents have vowed to keep fighting.

The introduction of the Western Sydney Wanderers has given football a new lease on life in Australia.

But the A-League season simply drags on way too long and its impact disappears by the time April and May rolls around.

The A-League goes for a whopping 27

rounds (not including the Finals), longer than the much more established NRL and AFL seasons.

It picks up momentum through November, December and January as the news cycle is quieter, the weather is good and people are craving good quality sport.

The last couple of games the Wanderers have hosted at Spotless Stadium have attracted paltry crowds.

The competition would be far better if it ran for 18 weeks from October with a Grand Final in late February, where the code can still dominate the headlines.

Respiratory illness in kids on the rise With winter fast approaching, doctors are warning local parents about respiratory illness among children ERIN MAMO

espiratory illnesses are the leading cause for hospital admissions among young children in the Blue Mountains, a local paediatrician has revealed.

According to Dr Arman Babajanyan, Head of Paediatrics at Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital, around one-fifth of children who come to the emergency department with respiratory illnesses will need to be admitted to hospital.

“In 2016, we saw more than 1,450 presentations of children with respiratory illnesses,” Dr Babajanyan said.

“At this hospital alone, we may see up to 160 children a month for respiratory illnesses.”

Dr Babajanyan said recent statistics are worrying, especially among young children.

“Overall hospital admissions and emergency presentations of children with respiratory conditions have not dropped significantly in recent years,” he said.

“From a hospital perspective we expect an increased number of children presenting with viral respiratory illnesses, pneumonia and asthma,” he said.

“Our hospital is preparing for winter, but it’s also important that parents be aware of how critically ill a young child with a respiratory illness can become within just a few hours.”

The paediatrician recommends that if a child has a respiratory condition, like asthma, that parents stay up-to-date with their asthma action plan and double-check the dosage and technique of medication frequently with their local doctor.

Further, Dr Babajanyan said that parents also need to recognise the first signs of illness in their child.

“If parents are concerned, and especially if you have young children less than threemonths-old, do not hesitate to go and see a doctor because children this young can critically deteriorate within a short period of time,” he said.

Blue Mountains Hospital recently hosted an ‘Acute Paediatric Respiratory Update Day’ for nursing and medical staff from children’s wards and emergency departments across Nepean, Blue Mountains and Lithgow hospitals.

Local school lights up competition Blue Mountains Grammar School finish with impressive results at prestigious Kids’ Lit Quiz ERIN MAMO

ear 6 students from Blue Mountains Grammar School competed in a war of words recently at the national final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz.

The competition, held on Saturday, March 18, saw Tien Attwater, Emily Colbran, Oliver Drew and Maeve Magner face-off in a wide-ranging literature quiz that tested both general literature knowledge and knowledge of specific authors, books, characters and opening lines.

Blue Mountains Grammar School Principal, Trevor Barman, said it was a nail-biting race to the finish line for the final three teams.

“In the final round our team was in equal second place, which brought on a tiebreaking single question contest against the team from Moreton Bay Boys’ College in Queensland,” he said.

“Our team then won the tiebreak question to finish the competition in outright second place.”

Blue Mountains Grammar School finished only half a point behind the winning team, Canberra Grammar, who will now contest the world finals over in Canada later this year.

Only 10 teams from Australia qualified for the recent finals through a series of regional heats across the nation.

At the final, each team participated in five rounds of 13 questions each.

An incorrect answer meant a reduction in points, so the pressure was well and truly on all teams to be both fast and accurate in their responses.

Mr Barman said the enthusiastic Blue Mountains Grammar School students showed determination and composure throughout the thrilling and challenging competition.

“I am extremely proud of our students’ wonderful achievements,” he said.

In the lead up to the competition, the students participated in mock quizzes to hone their skills.

The quiz, founded by quiz-master Wayne Mills, was developed to encourage reading in age groups where reading for pleasure can sometimes taper off in favour of technological devices or sporting pursuits.

For finishing in second place in the competition, the Blue Mountains Grammar School students received a small cash prize each and a selection of books.

Blue Mountains millennials making a positive impact

ey, hey! Blinky Bill is back on the bus shelter in Glenbrook.

Many locals will remember that Blinky Bill stood proudly on the bus shelter out the front of Glenbrook Cinema on Ross Street from 1992 until 2013 when a car destroyed it.

Now, local artist Jayne Shephard has finished putting the final touches on the new artwork and said she is very happy with the result.

“I’ve had a strong emotional connection with the bus stop since 1992, and I am thankful for the chance to restore the mural,” she said.

“I feel that the new mural is truer to the books than the original mural.”

The original mural was a collaboration between Ms Shephard and children from Glenbrook Public School, to celebrate the centenary of the school by way of a tribute to Australian children’s literature.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill, who visited the bus shelter recently with Ms Shephard, said he is delighted to see the new-look mural.

“I thank Jayne for her skills and dedication in bringing the iconic bus stop back to life for Glenbrook residents,” Cr Greenhill said.

It is certainly getting expensive around here. Private health insurance premiums are going up, Cyclone Debbie has just put the price of fruit onto the top shelf, and energy costs are out of control. You name it, and it’s going up. So I thought in this week’s column, we would look for some savings. Here are 10 tried and true ways to cut down on your expenses 1. Move bank accounts to take advantage of reduced fees, better interest and whatever else they may be offering to tempt you to join.

8. Check your tyres regularly. Correct tyre pressure will really improve on fuel consumption but apparently most people have tyres that are under inflated.

9. Pack food for your road trips instead of takeaway.

Not only money saving, but you will be guaranteed quality fresh food.

10. Remove credit card numbers from your online accounts – I have ‘one touch’ purchasing option with Amazon, very convenient but so, so easy to spend.

ave you ever thought how awesome it would be to start up a business with your best friend?

Or to go into partnership with your spouse? While these arrangements can work well, it is very important to analyse those relationships thoroughly before embarking on any business relationship. Here are some things to consider: Can you communicate well?

You need to ensure that you can talk openly and honestly with your potential partner.

Any communication issues that exist outside the business relationship will be massively magnified when you are working side by side.

When (not if!) issues arise, you will both need the ability to have frank conversations without egos being bruised.

Do your values clash?

You may have different personal values to your potential business partner, and for many of those values, this may not be an issue.

But it is important to ascertain core values from the outset, as those values

will influence your actions and decisions. If your business partner has a value that is in complete opposition to yours, you both need to decide if that will be a deal breaker.

Do your goals align?

If your partner’s goal is to work part time and create some extra ‘pocket money’, while your goal is to create a company that will eventually be listed on the stock exchange, you may want to have a re-think.

Although your goals may not be as extremely different as this example, it is still imperative that you have identical (or very similar) goals for your business venture.

Your goals should (and will) determine the direction you take and the decisions you make.

If those goals are not the same for both of you, it will make your ability to progress very difficult, if not impossible.

Do your skill sets and personalities complement one another?

Try to choose a business partner who can balance your weaknesses, and vice versa.

When searching for a business name, or a business type and location, businesses can appear on the first page of results on the right hand side of the page. They will also appear correctly in Google Maps, allowing customers to search based on location, and to find the addresses and directions of businesses. The best news is, Google My Business is absolutely free to use, with absolutely no catch or hidden advertising fees.

Google My Business showcases contact details, photos, trading hours and virtual tours, plus maps, with specific directions.

If you operate a home based business, you can still use Google My Business without a physical address listed.

To register for Google My Business, all you need to do is type it into Google and sign in with an active Gmail account.

Complete your business details to register your business. Google will then send you

a postcard with your nominated address with a unique verification code to verify your listing.

Your customers also have the opportunity to review your business on Google which will appear on your profile. This allows potential customers to see the quality of your business easily, similar to Facebook Reviews.

Insights allow users to see where their customers come from and how they’re interacting with your business. You can track the number of clicks on your phone number, website visits, see the number of views and see how many people click to get directions to your business. The Insights also give you an insight into how your business ranks compared to other businesses like yours, so you can ensure your listing is as effective as possible.

Now it’s the Mountains’ turn with the hit show ‘Puppetry of the Penis’ making its way to the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood this April.

Audiences will be in stitches as two

men, wearing nothing but shoes, turn their downstairs bits into a range of shapes that will be projected onto a huge video screen for all to enjoy.

The show will feature the most popular impersonations including the Loch Ness Monster, the Eiffel Tower, the Pelican and the iconic Hamburger, plus plenty of new installations such as Miley Cyrus, the Kardashian and Yoda.

This is the latest incarnation of the show, which has been playing to packed out audiences in Las Vegas.

“We are so excited to be bringing the show back down under again,” Creator and Puppeteer, Simon Morley said.

“The Australian audience is always

amazing and ready to have some fun.

“I’m sure they are going to love the incredible talents of Rich and Barry, straight from Las Vegas.”

Performers Rich Binning and Barry Brisco are looking forward to the opportunity to bring the show back to our shores.

“We’re excited to come to Australia because Australians like to get their penises out – it’s a complete different vibe especially because Australia is where the show came from,” Barry said.

There’s even an chance for audiences to get involved.

“Audience participation is very important which is why we’re happy we’re

coming back to Australia,” Barry said.

“We’ve introduced a second audience participation – we’ll have a lady on stage to do a trick with her and now we actually invite gentlemen to come on stage to learn how to make a burger in front of the audience – it’s had an amazing response.

OFFSPRING LATE 2017 CHANNEL TEN

Ê ‘The Big Bang Theory’ has officially been renewed for two more seasons, making it a whopping 12 seasons in total.

It’s quite unbelievable to think that this show will run longer than a number of major US sitcoms in the past including ‘Seinfeld’, ‘Friends’, ‘Frasier’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’. Ê Former ‘The X Factor’ judge James Blunt will perform at the upcoming Logie Awards. Recent ‘I’m a Celebrity’ winner Casey Donovan is also expected to be performing. The Logies air on April 23. Ê With the new series of ‘Prison Break’ premiering in the US today, many Aussies, including myself, have been wondering when the show will finally air here.

Unfortunately, Channel Ten (who have the rights to the series) have no current plans, with the network keen to see how the series performs in the US first. I must say this is a stupid move by Ten, considering how awful their ratings have been already this year – if anything a huge show like ‘Prison Break’ could give them the boost they need. Ê ‘Grand Designs Australia’ returns this month kicking off with a one hour special, ‘Kevin McCloud’s Top 10 Grand Designs Australia’. The special is filmed in historic Homewood House in Sur-

rey, England, with host Peter Maddison sitting down with Kevin McCloud, a cup of tea and an old fashioned slide show to reminisce about highlights from the past six seasons. The new season of ‘Grand Designs Australia’ will then begin the following week on Thursday, April 27.

Ê After the success of the Aussie series, LifeStyle will air episodes of ‘Gogglebox UK’ from Wednesday, April 12 at 7.30pm.

Simple ways to reduce your consumption of meat If you’re trying to have less meat in your diet, it doesn’t have to be a painful journey full of boring vegetables...

While there’s no chance of vegetarians and vegans taking over the world anytime soon, there does seem to be a growing interest in reducing our meat consumption.

With the rise of terms like ‘flexitarian’ many people are looking for healthy and delicious ways to find a balance between meat-heavy and meat-free eating.

If you’re ready to include more plantbased meals into your diet here are some things to keep in mind.

Start small While drastic changes may work for some, for most of us change is easiest to adapt to when it’s gradual.

A great way is by cutting down on the quantity of meat you eat with each meal.

Another option is to change to meat free Mondays, which is a great way to cut down on your weekly meat intake while giving you the chance to test out new recipes.

Don’t forget the protein When we think protein we often think of meat and dairy, but there are many plant-based sources of protein.

Try including legumes – such as lentils, chickpeas, black beans and kidney beans – into your diet, along with nuts and nut butters, seeds, soy-based products like tofu and tempeh, quinoa and grain-based products such as wholegrain breads.

Try the ‘meaty’ options No one is going to love all vegetables – not even a raw vegan. There are always going to be some plant foods that are more appealing than others.

When making the switch try to include ‘meaty’ vegetables like mushrooms – which are often referred to as the meat of the vegetable world due to its texture – or eggplant, which is delicious when grilled on the BBQ or made into parmigiana.

Modify your favourite meals It can seem tricky to forgo meat because it tends to be the star of our meals, with vegetables and salad playing a supporting role.

But cutting down on meat doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite meals.

It’s really just a matter of making a few simple swaps.

Find pizza drool-worthy? Then ditch the meat lovers and opt for a mix of meat and vegetable toppings. Have a soft spot for burritos? Try black beans instead of beef/chicken. Love a big bowl of spaghetti bolognaise? Swap half your mince for lentils.

he growing season for vintage 2016 in NSW’s Central Ranges that local maker Logan Wines summed up as “unpredictably kind”, gave ve the company both the biggest harvest in its 20 year history, istory, and its earliest.

After starting, in the words of owner and winemaker, maker, Peter Logan “scarily hot and dry”, the 2016 season n soon gave way to much needed rain and mild temperatures, atures, which all proved that even cold climate wine can benefit from a good dose of vitamin D and a wash-down with a healthy amount of water.

“As a result we squeezed in our biggest harvest ever in the shortest number of days,” said Peter.

And he’s particularly happy with the season’ss 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, a variety that loves sunshine, but ut with too much heat can ripen without developing flavour, avour, and also lose the all-important acid that it needs.

“But this one’s proved absolutely true to variety, y, with complexity and round but fresh drinkability,” Peter er said.

With prominent grapefruit and guava flavourss on a core of lime and minerality, it’s a delightful match h with pork four-quarter chops and apple sauce; well-priced iced at $23.

One to note: Wolf Blass Grey Label wines have a wellearned reputation for being rich and powerful, yet et with a wonderful approachability from their time in bottle before release.

A 2014 Grey Label McLaren Vale Shiraz (pictured)) that’s now available is just one such of these wines.

At $45 this one makes for a really rewarding pairing with slow-roasted lamb shanks under a star-anise se and plum marinade.

Netball v Traditional Runners Netball is a high impact sport that often requires short sharp bursts of agile movements.

Whilst running shoes are soft and cushioned, they lack the ability to control side to side movement and pose a risk of lower limb injuries as they best work for forwards-backwards motion.

The thick rubber sole found on runners reduces the ability to change direction quickly and is not as durable and the sole found on netball shoes that is designed to withstand high levels of abrasion.

Sport Aussie Rules’ popularity boost ERIN MAMO

espite muddy conditions, the Blue Mountains Kangaroos Junior AFL Club kicked off their 18th season in the greater western Sydney competition last weekend.

The club, based in Springwood, currently has around eight teams ranging from an under 9s Auskick team to an all girls under 15s team.

Club President, Danny Croucher, said all of the teams performed really well this past weekend in their opening games particularly the all girls team.

“Going into their second season, the under 15s girls team won their first game ever,” Croucher said.

“Against the Penrith Giants, the team with a lot of new players took a little while to find their feet but eventually got up, scored a few goals and beat the opposition 41 to 33.”

The under 12s team also got a win under their belt dominating their game against

Blue Mountains Kangaroos President, Danny Croucher, with players from the Under 11s and Under 12s the Ingleburn Magpies from the first bounce, with the final score 95 to 30.

Croucher said he has witnessed extraordinary growth in the local club recently due to an increased popularity in the sport.

“Since the Greater Western Sydney Giants entered the competition the

interest in AFL has grown in our area,” Croucher said.

“This year the Kangaroos will have two under 9s teams for the first time in many years and have over 40 Auskickers ready to go.”

Croucher said AFL is also proving to be popular with girls in the area too.

“Our under 15s girls team has doubled in size compared to last year, which is really exciting,” he said.

“We are now looking to field an under 12s girls team and need a few more players to get this up and running.”

Wiped out by Storm anthers coach Anthony Griffin admits his side panicked at times as it tried to play catch-up against Melbourne at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

Penrith went down 28-6 but the scoreline didn’t reflect the visiting team’s effort.

“The thing that disappointed me the most was how easy they got their points,” Griffin said after the game.

“They got them too easy and we had to fight to get to ours. To their credit they were there a few times when we were going over the line and forced us to lose the ball.”

Melbourne got to a 10-0 lead during the first half but the Panthers struck back to make it 10-6 at half-time. At that stage, Griffin thought his side were getting on top.

“There was some errors individually at times but I thought at 10-6 we got ourselves back into the game and we started to win the battle in the middle,” he said.

“If it had stayed 10-6 into that second half we would have been right in the game but we conceded that really easy one straight after halftime and just panicked a bit after that.”

The Storm remain the only unbeaten team in the NRL after beating Penrith.
