Stadium wars over
O
nly in politics could two sports stadiums cause so much discussion, so many issues and outlast a couple of
Premiers. We finally have a resolution, however, which is more of a “you get a car, you get a car, everyone gets a car” scenario. Both Allianz and ANZ Stadiums will be knocked down and re-built, joining the new Parramatta Stadium to complete an impressive new stadium network in Sydney. I’ve always been in two minds about this whole thing. I get that $2.3 billion is a lot to spend on a couple of stadiums that won’t even be half full for most of the events they host annually across a range of sports. But I don’t quite join the brigade of people who believe the cash should just be directed to hospitals, schools and transport instead. That’s such a simplistic way of looking at the whole situation and while health and education are critical cogs for any State Government, sport and recreation is also vitally important. There can also be no denying that the current State Government spends plenty of cash in those critical areas like health and education and will continue to do so. Allianz Stadium apparently has significant safety issues and is some 30-yearsold. It probably needs more than just a fresh coat of paint (even though, to be honest, I’ve always found a trip to Allianz pretty stress-free and comfortable). ANZ Stadium is perhaps the more controversial one. It’ll be less than 20-years-old when the bulldozers move in, having opened just before the Olym-

pics in 2000. Safety is not so much an issue there, but the Government feels it needs significant change to be successful and attract more major events. But ANZ already attracts sell-out crowds when it comes to key events such as soccer internationals, NRL Grand Finals, concerts and State of Origin matches. Despite what NRL boss Todd Greenberg thinks, the upgrades are unlikely to attract one extra person to a club game, because even with a slightly reduced capacity of 75,000 and the fans being closer to the action, it’ll still feel like a ghost town. But not all of us run our cars into the ground before we splurge on a new one. Perhaps this is a bit of forward thinking from a government aware that the needs and wants of sports fans are changing. But for the NRL to think this will solve the issue of dwindling crowds is crazy. Fans simply don’t want to travel to
watch their local team at centralised stadiums, particularly when there’s often trackwork on train lines or long traffic delays on approach to the venues. The NRL has convinced itself its fans don’t travel to Allianz or ANZ Stadium because of the quality of the venues but that’s simply not true. One disappointing thing in all of this is that the Outer Western Sydney Stadium, which many hoped would be built in Penrith, appears to have fallen off the radar. There was not a single mention of it in the press release issued last Friday when the Allianz and ANZ Stadium upgrades were announced. And yet at one stage a couple of years ago there was expectation that an announcement of such a stadium may only be a few months away. As late as April 2016, the NSW Government was saying a new rectangular stadium was still on the long-term agenda. But one gets the feeling longterm may be never. When all is said and done, the three new stadiums Sydney will have make a lot of sense – one in the heart of the city, one in Homebush and another in Parramatta. They will be the envy of the nation. But the extraordinary growth of areas like Camden, Liverpool and Penrith means a fourth stadium is needed to truly complete the puzzle. The State Government however is likely to argue, if it comes down to it, that the content may not exist to push ahead with the outer western Sydney venue. While the stadium battle may be over in theory, there’s still a few things to play out in the coming years.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley will conduct a timetable review if he wins in 2019 TROY DODDS
pposition Leader Luke Foley says if Labor wins the 2019 State Election it will review the new train timetable and “restore some fairness”. It comes as Sydney University joins the growing backlash against the timetable, particularly the decision to remove Redfern as a stop on Blue Mountains Line express services. Vice-chancellor Michael Spence said the decision had “added greatly to the university’s already significant public transport pressures”. “We are disturbed that we were not consulted about such a significant change,” he said. Dr Spence said Transport Minister Andrew Constance had identified demand for trains “going through the roof”, and “yet he had allowed a timetabling change which makes train travel for thousands of our students and staff lengthier and more challenging”. Access to Sydney University for students and the growing employment area of Redfern and Eveleigh makes the decision to remove Redfern as a stop baffling. “It has become abundantly clear that many people in western Sydney are worse

not better off under this new timetable,” Mr Foley said. “The Premier called the new timetable an early Christmas present for commuters but it’s more like Scrooge has been drafted in to help.” Mr Constance continues to stand by the timetable. When asked why he believes the majority of Blue Mountains customers enjoy quicker journey times as a result of cutting Redfern from the Blue Mountains express services, despite a comparison of timetables revealing the journey was actually two minutes longer, Mr Constance bizarrely stood firm. “The majority of people travelling from the Blue Mountains now get a quicker service as a result of that decision,” he said. “If you have a train turn up once every 10 minutes, and you reduce the frequency of that train down to once every 7.5 minutes, what happens to the dwell time on the station? It improves, people aren’t lingering on the station as long. “It’s all very well to sit here and look at smart phone apps and say ‘point A to point B with a train’, [but] look at people’s experience, they’re turning up, [and] there is a frequent train lobbing up.”

He died trying to repair a damaged walking trail in a harness at Wentworth Falls when the sudden rockslide caught him unaware and tragically ended his life. His body was recovered on Thursday, some 24 hours after the incident, with the remote location making it difficult for emergency crews to access. The rockslide happened at 11.40am last Wednesday, November 29 with two other men also injured in the incident. “The scene has been examined and has been handed back over to National Parks and Wildlife Service, Police said in a statement last Thursday. “Police from Blue Mountains Local Area Command are investigating the incident and are preparing a report for the Coroner. Safe Work NSW have been notified of the incident. Tributes to Mr Gliddon spoke of a passionate man who loved his family. “A legend across the board, Dave made one feel safe, excited, beautiful, fun, one friend wrote. Site closed due to asbestos fears SafeWork NSW has issued a prohibition notice to Blue Mountains City Council in relation to asbestos at a site in Wentworth Falls. The Day Street site is owned by Blue Mountains City Council and occupied by a pre-school. Two SafeWork NSW inspectors visited the premises last week following media reports about asbestos safety issues. Their inspection revealed asbestos cement sheeting (fibro) in the roof of the covered entrance that was weathered and in poor condition. SafeWork NSW Executive Director Peter Dunphy said Council has consequently been issued with a prohibition notice in relation to the premises. “The notice requires Council to contract a licensed asbestos assessor to conduct a full and thorough inspection of the site, Mr Dunphy said. “The purpose is to identify and assess the condition of all asbestos-containing materials, and to put in place appropriate controls to safely manage those materials. “The site will be closed while this assessment is carried out and the weathered asbestos-containing material at the entrance is safely removed. Mr Dunphy said when fibro or other bonded asbestos sheeting is broken, damaged or mishandled, fibres can become loose and airborne and may pose a potential risk to health. He said it was understood the risk was “low.

ights, camera, action! Local filmmakers are set to begin filming ‘Book Week’ – a comedydrama about an out-of-luck school teacher – in the Blue Mountains this January. After spending the past year crowdfunding for the film, production will commence early in the New Year for around a month. Director Heath Davis said the crew are now working hard to lock in all the logistics, including specific locations that will be used. “We are so excited to show off the area,” he said. “This film won’t be a postcard, it will be an authentic look into what life is like here.” The film will feature some familiar Australian faces like Susan Prior, Eamon Farren, Al Dukes, Steve Bastoni, Joelene Anderson, Kahn Chittendan, Maya Stange and Pippa Grandison. Locals are also set to be involved – both on and off camera – with Mountains actor Tiriel Mora, who is best known for his work on the TV series ‘Frontline’ and in the film ‘The Castle’, signing on to be part of the glitz and glamour.

Lacaze FINANCE MATTERS
So the Government has finally announced a Royal Commission into the banking system. They certainly delayed as much as they could, but it seems our Prime Minister succumbed to the pressures of public demand. No doubt concerns about the outcome of a couple of crucial by-elections helped tip the scales in favour of an inquiry. The public certainly has a right to know about the incompetence and greed that flows across most levels of these once esteemed institutions. And boy, are you going

to get some stories! Having been employed in the banking industry for most of my advising career, I for one have witnessed some incredible behaviour. My very own planned submission to the inquiry will indeed be rich with stories of the most self-centred, conniving and downright stupid actions ever perpetrated in a corporate environment! And I only worked in the western
suburbs! Stay tuned. In last week’s column I left a small conundrum to ponder during the ensuing seven day interval. If you recall it was a ‘sure fire’ money spinner, a client of mine had devised regarding an impending dividend and partial capital return. Well, what the client failed to grasp was a share price is automatically adjusted, down, for the amount of any dividend (and capital return) when it trades as ex dividend. Hence any immediate sale of his shares would have resulted in him only getting back his investment amount less the amount of the dividend. He would therefore have been no better off. When you’re investing, a little bit of knowledge is certainly a dangerous thing, which conveniently brings me to the topic of investment workshops mentioned in last week’s column. For all those investors out there interested in building up your investment knowledge, these workshops are for you. So from the complete novice wanting to learn, right through to the seasoned veteran keen to learn a bit more, send through an email to info@investortuition.com. au for more detail. See you next week!
Mr Davis said he is now holding an open audition, and is calling on locals to fill some juicy support roles. “There are lots of great roles to cast, especially for kids as the movie is predominantly set in a high school,” he said. “So we are inviting locals with or without acting experience but plenty of passion to come along and get involved. “This movie will play everywhere, so it could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.” Mr Davis said the filmmakers really want to showcase the region’s local talent to the world. “Movies that are filmed here from time to time never really invite the community into the process,” he said. “We want to ensure this experience is special for the local area. “Art projects like this have an amazing ability to connect and unite.” Open auditions will be held on Saturday, December 16 at the Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre in Lawson. If you’re interested in being in the new film – young or old – send a bio and a current head shot to bookweekcast@ gmail.com. Or just pop along to the open audition, held next weekend.

Summer warning The first week of summer has prompted a safety warning from Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean who has urged consumers to be vigilant when firing up their barbecues. “There’s nothing more Australian than a summer barbecue, but it’s important to ensure gas appliances are safe to use,” Mr Kean said. “Keen outdoor cooks should regularly check the connection point at the gas bottle. Soapy water can help identify a leak in the connection. If you find a leak or smell gas, immediately turn off the gas at the bottle and discontinue use. “Fittings and hoses should be checked frequently for wear and tear, and replaced as needed.” Mr Kean also warned consumers to avoid using barbecues indoors.

Better testing More than one million women overdue for their Pap test are being urged to have the more effective, five-early Cervical Screening Test, expected to reduce cervical cancer deaths by at least 20 per cent. NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, also urged women to speak with their GP about the new test. “Cervical screening has been one of the great public health success stories of our generation, halving both the incidence and mortality rates for cervical cancer,” Dr Chant said. Eight out of 10 women diagnosed with cervical cancer have not had regular screening.

STAR OF X FACTOR AND EUROVISION
After 601 days of Labor calling for a Royal Commission into the banks and finance sector, the Prime Minister and Treasurer finally announced one last week. The terms of reference are yet to come out, but it is expected to investigate the conduct of banks, wealth managers, superannuation providers and insurance companies. The inclusion of the insurance sector into this Royal Commission is a win for Blue Mountains residents. Many people who went through the 2013 bushfires have a real understanding of how the insurance system failed them as they attempted to make a claim to rebuild their home. Ironically, the people who had been with the same insurer for a very long time were often those worst affected by unintentional under-insurance. Labor promised a Royal Commission into the banks at the last election, and we have continued to pressure the Turnbull Government each and every day into holding one. The Prime Minister has finally caved in but for all the wrong reasons – he’s doing it because the banks asked him to. We now need to make sure that the Turnbull Government does it right.
I am concerned about the Government’s lack of consultation on the terms of reference of the Royal Commission with victims of unscrupulous behaviour by the financial services industry. Mr Turnbull has always been on the side of the banks. Now it’s time to be on the side of consumers. For a successful and comprehensive Royal Commission now occur, it is critical that victims groups, the Opposition and other stakeholders are formally consulted on its Terms of References. This Royal Commission should not be driven by a desire to give banks and the insurance companies some sort of tick of approval, but for a desire to see justice for individuals and businesses who’ve been systematically mistreated by these powerful institutions. It’s about us as customers and about how trust that has been betrayed I’ve written to the Prime Minister and the Treasurer to ensure that the inquiry extends to the massive underinsurance of fire-prone Blue Mountains residents, and I will be fighting to ensure that any unscrupulous conduct of banks, the financial services sector and insurance companies is brought to light in this Commission. See you next week.

Springwood FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS: As newcomers to the Mountains we are still getting to know the area but have tried out a few of the cafes in Glenbrook and always enjoy a meal at Springwood Sports Club. FAVOURITE PLACE TO HAVE A DRINK IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS: The Springwood Sports Club THE FIRST PLACE YOU’D TAKE A VISITOR TO THE MOUNTAINS: Jelly Bean Pool is nice for the kids but we are discovering new, exciting places constantly now that it is heating up. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE MOUNTAINS: The nature. Having moved from Sydney it is so different to our previous home and surroundings. WHAT IS THE MOUNTAINS’ BEST KEPT SECRET: I don’t think we have discovered it yet!
Whenever we drive past a graveyard my dad says, “Do you know why I can’t be buried there?” And we all say, “Why not?” And he says, “Because I’m not dead yet!”

JOKE of the WEEK
emember that scene from ‘9½ Weeks’ where Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke do stuff with food that meant you never looked at a honey dispenser the same way again? Former ‘MasterChef’ contestant turned author, Beau Cook, has taken that age-old concept of combining food and sex and created a recipe book called Beau Cook’s Food Porn – for those who love a bit on the side with their main course. In a world where millions of Instagrammers are snapping every dish that lands under their nose, #foodporn is a widely used hashtag. Eating with our eyes has never been so popular. Beau Cook’s Food Porn is a feast for your eyes as well as for your belly. Food Porn. We all love the turn of phrase. Beau’s inner teenager loved what this could be. Being sexually suggestive with food is fun so Beau went about
developing a recipe book that took a light-hearted look at food and porn in a humorous and tongue-in-cheek way – or is that tongue in grapefruit? The book is illustrated with a range of bodies, ages, genders and culturally diverse models enjoying food in a variety of positions suggesting that this really is a book about real food for real people with real desires. Beau Cook’s Food Porn will have you rapidly fanning yourself with a banana leaf and blushing like a peach when it shows you more than one use for spaghetti or what to do with a zucchini. Flick through glossy and colourful pages of licks and laughs and create Beau’s recipes to feed your lover this Christmas. Beau Cook’s Food Porn is available through Amazon and other online retailers for $29.99. The Record has five copies of Beau Cook’s Food Porn to give away. For your chance to win one, send an email to competitions@bluemountainsrecord.

Triple J announced last week that its popular Hottest 100 Copy countdown would be held on January 27 instead of Australia Day, where it has found a home in recent years. The Hottest 100 has been caught up in the Australia Day ‘change the date’ debate for some time now, and organisers have decided to move the countdown to what is considered a more appropriate date, after consulting with their audience. Some, however, have reacted angrily to the change this week.

Jessica Fox tops off brilliant year NATHAN TAYLOR
T
wo-time Olympian Jessica Fox has won NSW sport’s highest award after she was named Athlete of the Year at the NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony last week. The Leonay paddler and former Blaxland High School student defeated a star-studded field for the prestigious Athlete of the Year award, which included Olympic discus thrower Dani Stevens, Test cricketer Ellyse Perry, world champion diver Rhiannan Iffland, world number one croquet player Alison Sharpe, surf lifesaving beach sprinter Jake Lynch and Jillaroos player Simaima Taufa. Fox, a medallist at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games, enjoyed an outstanding year winning a total of 13 individual medals and three team medals in the women’s C1 and K1 events at the 2017 World Cups and World Championships. Fox completed her season crowned world champion in the K1 Slalom at the ICF World Championships. At the same event, she teamed up with sister Noemie and Ros Lawrence to win silver in the C1 teams event, following a bronze medal in the K1 teams event.
Despite finishing second in the final event of the C1 World Cup, Fox claimed the overall title after three successive wins earlier in the year. Member for Penrith and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said Fox’s honour reflected the growing popularity and success in women’s sport. “Six of the seven NSW Athlete of the Year finalists were female athletes and Jess has overcome an outstanding group to capture the highest honour in NSW sport,” he said. Sydney FC’s record-breaking 2016/17 ALeague season, where they set a record for most competition points in a season (66 points) and most wins in a season (20 wins) was recognised when named Team of the Year. Netball NSW and AFL NSW/ACT were named joint winners of the Organisation of the Year, while Hockey NSW’s David Thompson was named Administrator of the Year. The ceremony also saw swimming great Ian Thorpe elevated to Legend status while former Penrith basketballer Matthew Nielsen was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions. Sport NSW Chairperson, Joseph La Posta, congratulated the inductees, winners and nominees saying NSW continues to produce Australia’s premier athletes, officials and administrators.
