Mountains on track for new services State Government introduces brand new Blue Mountains trains to keep up with growing demand ERIN MAMO

ommuters and tourists will have more express services, more seats and reduced travel times to popular Blue Mountains destinations following a major surge in demand.

The NSW Government’s ‘More Trains, More Services’ program will boost tourism and small business by transforming travel to the world heritage district with: * 24 new express services between Sydney and the Blue Mountains on weekends; * Dedicated 8-car express tourist trains to boost Blue Mountains tourism with around 20 minute cuts to return travel times; * More than 25,000 additional seats every week, including an extra 18,000 on weekends; * A new weekday Sydney – Lithgow return express service to increase capacity for customers travelling to and from the Blue Mountains on weekdays as well as improving journey times for regional coach customers who interchange at Lithgow on their way to and from Sydney.

In addition, the NSW Government will fast track some improvements in coming weeks by: * Doubling capacity on six current weekend Blue Mountains services from four to

eight carriages; * Providing more than 4,000 additional seats on weekends imminently.

“We know many weekend trains are packed to the brim so we’re taking action right now, ahead of the new timetable due to be implemented late this year,” Mr Constance said.

“Late this year, we’ll then introduce more 8-car express tourist trains that will get to popular destinations like Leura, Wentworth Falls and Katoomba faster.”

On weekends, a journey on an express service between Sydney and Katoomba will take around two hours, saving almost 20 minutes on a return trip while a return trip from Parramatta to Katoomba will take about 90 minutes, saving more than 15 minutes.

A new weekday Sydney – Lithgow return express train will also better service regional customers who interchange at Lithgow on their way to and from Sydney.

The morning Sydney to Lithgow express service will connect at Lithgow with coaches heading to Bathurst and Orange while the return Lithgow to Sydney service will connect with coaches arriving from destinations like Nyngan, Dubbo, Wellington, Molong, Orange, Lucknow and Bathurst.

Pop! Council considering balloon ban Councillor Brent Hoare suggests banning the use and release of helium balloons at Council events ERIN MAMO

s an item of discussion, helium balloons caused quiet a stir at Blue Mountains City Council’s latest monthly meeting.

Greens Councillor Brent Hoare put up a notice of motion that Council receives a briefing on the feasibility of banning the use and release of helium balloons at Council events or on Council managed reserves.

Cr Hoare said while it’s not the biggest cause of the pollution crisis, it is something that Council could do something about.

Liberal Councillor Daniel Myles was infuriated by the motion, claiming that Cr Hoare has an unhealthy obsession with climate change.

“Now we are supposed to tell parents that no your children can’t have a balloon at local community events,” Cr Myles said.

“Shame, shame, shame.”

Cr Myles then went on to question how Council would possibly police a ban like this.

“Are we going to use our rangers at events to go around and fine parents whose children have a balloon?” he questioned.

Councillor Brendan Christie also condemned the motion.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill took to the floor supporting Cr Hoare’s notice of motion for a briefing, noting that the Councillor should not be mocked for his sincerity.

“He’s not seeking to ban helium balloons, he is just asking for a briefing on the feasibility of it,” Cr Greenhill said.

In response to his critics, Cr Hoare said he couldn’t believe how controversial the topic quickly became.

“This is not a trivial issue,” he said.

“It may come as news to a few people in this room but it’s been illegal in NSW for a number of years to release balloons of quantities of more than 20 at a time.

“All I was proposing was that we look at using more environmentally friendly alternatives like paper lanterns, rather than balloons that don’t break down.”

Recently, both Eurobodalla Shire Council and Lithgow City Council have moved to ban the use of helium balloons at Council events and on Council managed reserves.

The motion for a briefing was carried.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said that in a number of cases identified so far, the lived experience has not matched the intention of the reform for commercial and industrial sectors, particularly for small and medium businesses.

“The FESL is a complex reform and we always knew there would be challenges during the transition phase,” he said.

“It’s not enough for this reform to work on paper – its real-life implementation has real life consequences for families and businesses, and we need to make sure they are not placed under unfair strain.”

Opposition Leader Luke Foley said the Premier and Treasurer clearly hadn’t done their homework.

“The community, emergency service workers, councils and insurers were all looking to government for certainty and all they are getting is chaos and confusion,” he said.

“You have to question the Government’s motivation for backflipping. It’s not because they want to do the right thing but rather they have been caught out trying to pull the wool over the community’s eyes.”

The FESL will continue to be collected via insurance policies until the NSW Government has completed its review of the policy, with all current funding requirements to be met.

he State Government has delayed the introduction of the Fire and Emergency Services Levy (FESL).

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian made the shock announcement last Tuesday, saying the Government had listened to community concerns.

Currently, the Emergency Services are funded through State contributions (14 per cent), Local Government contributions (11.7 per cent) and levies attached to privately held insurance, mainly for building and contents insurance policies (74.3 per cent).

But from July 1, the funding was to come largely from the FESL, collected quarterly by Council as part of rates.

Funding would no longer be collected via insurance policies, reducing those premiums for the end user.

However, the plan is now on the back burner with Ms Berejiklian confirming that there were concerns about the burdens to be faced by small and medium sized businesses.

“We are a Government that listens, and we have heard the concerns from the community, and we will take the time to get this right,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“While the new system produces fairer outcomes in the majority of cases, some people – particularly in the commercial and industrial sectors – are worse off by too much under the current model.”

rominent local businessman Jim Aitken claims his real estate agency and café in Glenbrook could be forced to shut down if significant changes are made to Hare Street and the Great Western Highway intersection.

Mr Aitken recently started a petition which has over 300 signatures from locals concerned that the proposed changes to the intersection will create more traffic issues in the village.

“Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) are proposing to stop traffic from turning right at Mann Street onto the Great Western Highway. They also want to stop people from crossing over the highway coming from Hare Street into Mann,” he said.

“These changes won’t work, it will create more congestion.

“People living across the highway on the other side of Glenbrook won’t be able to get into the village easily and people wanting to go to Penrith will have to go further into the village, just to get out.”

Mr Aitken said shifting the traffic from the Mann Street intersection to the Ross Street intersection will not fix the problem.

“We need another entrance in and out of Glenbrook, not one to get in and one to get out,” he said.

Mr Aitken is so concerned that he may have to close down his popular café, if people stop coming into the village due to traffic issues.

Contrary to their website, an RMS spokesperson advised the Record that no specific design has been decided on for the intersection yet.

“At this stage RMS are still reviewing options for the Hare Street and Great Western Highway intersection,” the spokesperson said.

“There was an original, preferred option that was highlighted when Blue Mountains City Council went out to the public for consultation but this has not been finalised.”

RMS advised that once a final design has been completed they will consult with the community.

On their website, RMS has stated that construction is due to start at the intersection in mid-2017 and be completed by late 2017.

Could you walk 100km in 48 hours?

Local Blue Mountains team to trek 100km in just two days to raise much-needed funds for Oxfam challenge for her and her team is to stay positive in the long haul sections of the trail.

“We could easily give in to the physical pain but we are learning to be mentally strong and to push through,” she said.

Since its establishment in 1999, the Oxfam Trailwalker in Australia has raised more than $70 million towards vital work in countries of need.

Ms Searle and her team originally started with a fundraising goal of $1,500 but have now raised well over $4,000.

They have now set a new goal of raising $5,000 before the walk begins on June 16.

azelbrook local Madeline Searle has a big walk ahead of her after committing to this year’s Oxfam Trailwalker, a charity event that will see her and her dedicated team walk 100km in 48 hours.

Taking on the Brisbane track from Friday, June 16, Ms Searle and her team mates – partner Brent, sister Kate and good friend Jane – said they are ready to challenge themselves while raising money for a great charity.

“The Oxfam Trailwalker makes a huge difference to people living in poverty around the world,” she said.

“Every dollar we raise helps to lift whole communities out of poverty.”

In preparation for the event Ms Searle has been sweating up a storm, taking on 30km walks in Wentworth Falls and recently walking from Springwood Train Station to her work in Penrith.

“We are following the training guide provided to us by Oxfam, which started quite tame with 45 minute walks three times a week and a bigger weekend walk, but has ramped up over the last few weeks to daily one hour walks and bigger week-

This movie follows three African American women as they work tirelessly to win the space race in the racially segregated NASA computing department.

You’ll be forgiven for not knowing the names of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P Henson), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) off the top of your head.

But, by the end of the film, the determination and intelligence of these women, who were faced with discrimination every step of the way, will make you wonder why you don’t see them in the history books more often.

Blue Mountains City Council has completed the finishing touches on the upgrade of Lawson Hall, which can now accommodate larger groups in the much loved multi-purpose venue.

Also known as the Mechanics Institute, the hall now has a new portico entrance with accessible ramp; a new car park to accommodate 100 people; a further upgrade of the back room; a new accessible toilet; and landscaping and stormwater treatment. “I am very happy that Council has worked with our community to realise the vision of a performing arts venue in Lawson,� said Ward 2 Councillor, Romola Hollywood. “Lawson Hall will now be able to meet a higher demand and can now better meet community expectations.�

Stamp duty relief First home buyers have had a big win thanks to a raft of measures announced by the State Government last week to improve housing affordability.

First home buyers could save as much as $34,460 under the new plans, which include abolishing all stamp duty for first home buyers on existing and new homes up to $650,000. There will also be stamp duty discounts all the way up to $800,000. “I am confident these measures will make a difference and allow us to meet the housing challenge for our growing State,� said NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian. “I want to ensure that owning a home is not out of reach for people in NSW.�

Local businesses to unite at Expo The 9th Regional Business Expo to be held tomorrow in Springwood ERIN MAMO

he 9th Regional Business Expo is on tomorrow (Wednesday, June 7) at the Blue Mountains Community Theatre and Hub in Springwood.

The annual event will bring together a number of different businesses from the local community, giving the public the chance to find out what products and services are available to them in their very own backyard.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from this year’s Federal Budget

W

elcome to my weekly column in the Record, which will focus on Federal issues affecting the Blue Moun-

tains.

The city media rarely considers how Federal decisions affect us, west of the Nepean, so it’s great to look at things at a more local level.

Parliamentarians have just finished an intense two weeks debating aspects of the Budget.

More detail has come out about the impacts on the Mountains.

We know that public schools will be $5 million worse off over the next two years under the Turnbull Government’s changes to the funding formula, and we also know that low-fee Catholic schools are concerned about what the changes will mean for them.

We also know that Blue Mountains university students will pay higher fees and have to pay back HELP debts sooner; that unfreezing the Medicare rebate will take another three years; and nothing was offered to seriously address the housing affordability crisis that we all know about.

We also now know that Black Spot funding for our roads has been cut.

The community did have some wins in the Budget: the government has dropped its plans to prevent women from accessing their full paid parental leave entitlement. So now, if you’ve negotiated leave with your employer, you can take it on top of the universal leave that Labor introduced.

This is better for mums and their babies, not to mention other family members, who all benefit from a secure start in life.

The government has also realised that pensioners are doing it tough and offered a one-off Energy Supplement of $75, and they’ve reinstated the Concession Card for pensioners who lost it at the beginning of the year.

I’m also pleased to see them drop plans to privatise Australian Hearing, a wellrun and efficient organisation that helps children, Aboriginal and elderly people who have hearing difficulties.

ouncil has saved a whopping $235,000 in project funds after coming in under budget on the recent Lapstone Oval upgrade, with the remaining funds to be allocated to upgrade Warrimoo Oval.

As part of Council’s 2016-17 Asset Works Program, $675,000 was allocated to the Lapstone Oval improvements but the work was completed at a total cost of $405,000.

Councillor Brendan Christie believes Council has done a great job with the upgrade.

“Knowing that this project came in under budget to fund another upgrade at Warrimoo Oval is outstanding,” he said.

Council used a number of cost saving initiatives during the Lapstone Oval project, including minimising the need to remove spoil from the site; ruling out the use of costly retaining walls and drainage infrastructure; and programming the works during the off-season of netball.

The left over $235,000 will now be reallocated to fund the Warrimoo Oval upgrades, which have previously been identified as high priority because of safety issues.

Australian Hearing is the leading hearing specialist and the largest provider of Government funded hearing services.

As part of the recent 2017-18 Budget, the Government decided to retain full ownership and control of the provider.

“This is great news for our local community who fought hard, signing petitions

and attending forums against privatisation,” Ms Templeman said.

“We have an Australian Hearing centre in Springwood, with outreach visits happening through the Mountains and Hawkesbury and as far west as Lithgow.”

In 2015, the Government was approached by a consortium led by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, Cochlear Limited and Macquarie University, with a proposal for the transfer of Australian Hearing into nongovernment ownership.

In 2016, the Government announced it would formally assess the proposal before later withdrawing.

Warrimoo Oval is set for an upgrade children’s playground, a new shared path, improved entry and exits, and better drainage.

Cr Christie said the upgrades will make the recreational facility a safer place for pedestrians, families and players, as well as easing congestion on roads.

lue Mountains residents are preparing for the biggest overhaul of waste collection services in decades.

The new service, which involves the introduction of a new green organics bin, starts on July 4.

Blue Mountains City Council has been delivering the new green bin to residents since May 16.

This will continue until June 13.

“I look forward to July 4, when the first green bin collections take place,” said Mayor Mark Greenhill, who presented the notice of motion for the new bin system.

“The new waste service will see the Council and the community working together to continue reducing waste to landfill in the Blue Mountains.”

The new bin was proposed after the Council undertook extensive research for more than two years to establish the best waste service option for the community.

Three options were then presented to the residents during a month long consultation period.

Over two thirds of the residents who provided a submission were in favour of receiving a green bin of some sort.

“I can’t wait for the garden organics bin to arrive,” said Lapstone local, Sophie Barrett.

“I love composting but it will be so much easier to put all our grass, leaves etc straight into a bin.”

housands of international guests visit the Blue Mountains each week and now sporting royalty has joined the list.

Arsenal club legend Freddie Ljungberg visited the Three Sisters at Katoomba to promote the 2017 Arsenal in Sydney tour, where the EPL giants will play back-to-back blockbusters against Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Ljungberg, 39, played 328 games for the Gunners in a glittering 10-year career.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the Gunners will be in Australia in July next year.

“Football fans around Australia and the world can get these dates in their diary, and book their trip to Sydney for two blockbuster matches,” Mr Ayres said.

“The atmosphere will be electric with Arsenal bringing their first team squad to go head-to-head with two of our top sides.”

Tickets to the games at ANZ Stadium go on sale tomorrow – Tuesday, July 19.

Arsenal Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gazidis said the Club was looking forward to the matches.

“Our pre-season matches enable the squad to complete final preparations ahead of a new campaign, and Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers will provide a strong test for the team,” Mr Gazidis said.

“The trip also gives our travelling squad a wonderful opportunity to see our loyal supporters in a country so passionate about football.”

“The best I’ve seen”: Mayor praises current Councillors ahead of election

t just 15-years-old, Jenna Jones will today begin her journey to Rio, to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games.

Jenna, a talented swimmer, will compete in a number of events as part of the S13 vision impaired team.

“I’m excited now but I know when I go away I’ll be very nervous,” Jenna told the Record.

The Falconbridge teen was diagnosed with Con Dystrophy when she was five-years-old, a degenerative eye impairment that makes it difficult for her to see details clearly and blurs colours together.

“I have trouble seeing things from a distance but I’ve had to learn ways around doing things, so it doesn’t affect me too much,” she said.

Jenna certainly hasn’t let her impairment stop her from achieving big things. Last year she broke an open age world record at the National Short Course swimming competition.

Now she hopes to break a couple of personal bests in Brazil.

“I just want to do the best I can do,” Jenna said.

“I’d be really excited if I broke a PB, and a medal would be great.”

Jenna will stop over in the United States this week to take part in a training camp before heading to Rio. Once in Rio she will be competing against swimmers of all ages.

Jenna attributes a lot of her success to the supportive network she has around her, which includes her school – St Columba’s in Springwood.

“My school has been so supportive, it’s actually really unbelievable sometimes I feel like they are more excited then me,” she said.

“Mr Malone, Ms Hall and my Principal and Deputy Principal have all been really great.”

Outside of school, Jenna said her parents and swimming coach, Mick Robinson, have helped her to get to where she is today.

Mr Malone, who is the head of PE at St Columba’s, couldn’t be prouder of his star pupil as she embarks on the journey of a lifetime.

“Jenna is a remarkable athlete, I taught her in Year 7 and she has always been a standout athlete,” he said.

St Columba’s celebrated Jenna’s achievement last week by decorating the school in green and gold, and hosting a special farewell assembly.

io Olympic Bronze medallist Jessica Fox received a hero’s welcome when she surprised students at her former high school in the Blue Mountains.

Students from Blaxland High School greeted the two-time Olympic medallist with cheers as well as hundreds of requests for ‘selfies’, to which the lovable Leonay local gladly obliged.

Fox was so appreciative of the support she

received from home, that she even passed around her Rio bronze medal and London silver medal for every single student to touch and hold.

Speaking with the Record, Fox said she was overwhelmed by the amount of love she received from students and her former teachers.

“It’s really lovely to be back here, I have so many great memories at this school,” she said.

“It was a bit emotional and slightly overwhelming with the amount of selfies, but it

was really awesome to see all the students supporting me and the other Blaxland High Olympians.”

Fox was one of three former Blaxland High students to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, along with fellow paddler Ian Borrows and shooter Jennifer Hens.

Having not been home due to various commitments since April, the 22-year-old finally returned to Australia last Wednesday – one week earlier than the rest of the Australian Olympic Team.

With another two major competitions right around the corner, Fox said it was important to return home early to recharge the batteries.

“I wasn’t planning on leaving again so soon but I’ve decided to race the last two World Cup events in Prague and Slovenia in early September, so I came back from Rio a week early to have at least one week at home in my own bed and to see friends,” she said.

With two Olympic medals of the silver and bronze variety already around her neck, Fox will aim for gold in Tokyo in 2020.

ushfires, amalgamation speculation and the emergence of the Western Sydney Airport as a key agenda item – it’s been a busy four years for the current Council, which wrapped up its term last month.

Blue Mountains residents will go to the polls this Saturday to vote for the Councillors they want to represent them until 2020.

Mayor Mark Greenhill addressed Councillors at Council’s August meeting, reflecting on some of the successes they have had since he took on the role in 2013.

“Daniel Myles lied to me, he told me this gig was easy,” Cr Greenhill said.

“Five weeks into the Mayoral term all I was confronted with was smoke, blue and red lights and a whole lot of trouble.”

The flashing lights and smoke came from the disastrous 2013 bushfires in Winmalee and Springwood.

Looking back Cr Greenhill commended each of his Councillors for their support and help during a very difficult time and in taking over the recovery process after the State and Federal Governments moved on.

“A four month recovery process for something as devastating as that wasn’t good enough,” he said.

“Every single family benefited because you took a stand and took on the Government.”

Other successes Cr Greenhill touched on included avoiding amalgamation of the Council with other nearby local Councils including Penrith, the Hills District and Hawkesbury.

“The critics said we should be amalgamated but we stayed strong and we succeeded,” he said.

Cr Greenhill praised all of the Councillors he’s worked with over the last four years.

“I’ve seen them come and go but this lot is the best I’ve seen yet,” he said.

“We have operated as a unified team with political interests taking a back seat to community interests.”

Councillors Anton Von Schulenburg and Brendan Luchetti also spoke as neither of them are running for a spot this time around.

Cr Von Schulenburg said he was proud to have been a member of a Council that had improved its finances, implemented green bins and worked hard on a Local Environmental Plan for the community and region.

Cr Luchetti, an independent who was Deputy Mayor for part of the recent term, said it had been a roller coaster ride but one that he was glad he was a part of.

n original Norman Lindsay painting that is believed to be over 70-years-old is now on display at the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge.

Last Thursday, ‘Woman with Satyr’ was unveiled at the Blue Mountains gallery that it will now call home for the next 12 months.

The NSW Police Force has loaned the original oil painting out which is valued between $30,000 and $40,000.

The details of how the police came to own the authentic piece of artwork is yet to be clarified, however, the painting’s existence came to life after the Art Gallery of NSW found the piece in its storage facility in 2010.

Documents associated with the artwork indicated that the NSW Police had loaned the painting to the Art Gallery of NSW in 1980.

After the discovery of the painting, the police established ‘Operation Matisse’, a search to try to locate the owner of the artwork.

Several months of investigation revealed that at one stage the painting belonged to a prominent art-collecting family in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Blue Mountains Local Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson, who presented the artwork to the Norman Lindsay Gallery, said he is pleased to have the opportunity to loan the artwork to the community.

“It’s wonderful that this unique painting will be loaned to a regional gallery already dedicated to showcasing this iconic Australian artist’s work, where it will benefit the entire local community,” he said.

ark Greenhill says he is “blown away” by the result of the Local Government Election.

Cr Greenhill dominated the poll in Ward 4, taking out 50.9 per cent of the votes and gaining enough of the primary vote to be able to secure running mate Darryl Bowling a spot on Council for the next four years.

“I’m blown away,” Cr Greenhill said.

“I was so shocked when reports of votes started coming in at 50 per cent, I spent all of Sunday trying to get it to sink in.”

Liberal Councillor Brendan Christie will also be returning for another term on Council in Ward 4.

Independent Shae Foenander, who vowed to always speak for the residents, clearly won them over, with 28 per cent of the primary vote in Ward 3.

“I am extremely honoured and humbled by the community’s response in voting for me in the local Council elections,” Ms Foenander said.

Labor Councillor Mick Fell and Liberal Councillor Daniel Myles will also see out another term on Council.

In Ward 2, Labor were the clear front runners with Councillor Romola Hollywood topping the polls. Longstanding Liberal Councillor Chris van der Kley also won a seat as did Greens candidate Brent Hoare.

In Ward 1, Labor Councillor Don McGregor won the top spot with Greens newcomer Kerry Brown coming in second.

The decision was unanimous, Greenhill for Mayor, with long-standing councillor Chris Van der Kley elected Deputy Mayor.

Cr Greenhill thanked his new team for their support and went on to talk about the important roles they would all hold within the community.

“If you’re elected you’re here equally, it doesn’t matter if you received 50.8 per cent of the vote or 15 per cent of the vote,” Cr Greenhill said.

“Now, together, we have to make decisions for our community.

“We’ve made a commitment about the sort of people we would be and we have to stick to it.”

The seat of Deputy Mayor went to an open vote, with both Cr Van der Kley and Cr Kerry Brown vying for the spot.

Cr Greenhill then moved a motion proposing Council introduce a new role of Alternate Deputy Mayor, who would step in for the Mayor and/or Deputy Mayor if they were both unavailable to attend a civic duty.

It was decided that this motion would be voted on at Council’s October meeting.

New Councillors Shae Foenander, Darryl Bowling and Brent Hoare also spoke to the floor for the first time, talking about some of the key policies they intend to work on during their term.

he Greens have launched a strong fivepoint plan to protect biodiversity in the Blue Mountains.

Recently, Blue Mountains and western Sydney Greens councillors and candidates met with NSW Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi in Lapstone to launch the new plan.

The plan has been developed to oppose the Government’s new Native Vegetation Act which is part of the NSW biodiversity reforms.

The Native Vegetation Act regulates land clearing and would allow for the process to take place more freely across the state.

“The Government has a raft of so-called ‘biodiversity reforms’ that will greenlight land clearing across the state and be devastating for our biodiversity,” Ms Faruqi said.

“We live in an urban corridor containing significant biodiversity and entire ecosystems that play a critical role in conserving the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area to either side of us. We must protect the environment, not overdevelopment.”

The Greens’ five-point plan supports stronger local planning laws that would protect and conserve biodiversity and the development of new nature reserves and green corridors for wildlife.

Greens Candidate for Ward 1 Kerry Brown believes the Blue Mountains are particularly at risk with 10 per cent of all threatened species in NSW found in our region.

he local team behind the award-winning new Australian film ‘Broke’ is set to announce a second film that will be shot in locations in the Blue Mountains.

Director, Heath Davis, will host an event at Scenic World in Katoomba this Saturday, August 6, to introduce his latest venture, ‘Book Week’. “‘Book Week’ is a comedy/drama about reading and writing which will be produced and shot entirely in the Blue Mountains,” Mr Davis said.

“Our hope with this film is to encourage adults and kids to switch off their iPhones and pick up a book or pen again.

“We really want to drive people back into reading and using their imaginations.”

Saturday’s event is open to the public and will include live music, food and drinks, a special screening of ‘Broke’, Q & A with cast and crew of both films and the opportunity for locals to hear about upcoming plans for ‘Book Week’.

Producer James Nightingale said he is hoping that local businesses, residents and creative geniuses from the area can get involved and be part of the journey too.

“Filmmaking is all about collaboration and we are really adamant about including the townsfolk,” Mr Nightingale said.

‘Book Week’ will be a crowd funded film, which will rely on funding from the local community and businesses. Filming is set to begin in March and locations that can be confirmed include The Carrington Hotel and Station Bar in Katoomba.

The event kicks off at 6pm this Saturday, August 6 and tickets are $20.

lue Mountains City Council has started to make plans for the future of Lawson Golf Course.

The golf course was closed by the Council in April 2004 because of changes in community needs and the cost of maintenance to the site.

Now, its future is back on the agenda.

“I am pleased that Council has responded to my call for the future of the former Lawson Golf Course to be placed back on the table for discussion,” said Councillor Romola Hollywood.

“Council’s 2016-2017 Budget has been amended so that we can commence the master planning process, in consultation with the community, for this important community land.”

As Crown Land owned by the NSW Government the property is held in trust for recreational purposes to be managed by Council and to date is used as a 24 hour off-leash dog park.

In 2007, Council conducted extensive consultation with the community on options for the future use and development of the Lawson site, and options for how this could be funded.

This process was stalled because of the Crown Lands review and in the absence of a funding agreement with the NSW Government to allow for the development of community and recreational facilities on the land.

“I look forward to hearing from the community what they would like to see on the former Lawson Golf Course,” said Councillor Chris Van der Kley.

“It is important to get it right for such an important site in the mid-Mountains.”

t just 21, Ashleigh Walker, a chef at the Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath, is already making waves in the culinary world.

Recently Ashleigh competed in the Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award, the longest running culinary competition in Australia and took home a silver medal.

The Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award is a competition that is dedicated to helping junior and apprentice chefs develop their cooking skills and broaden their horizons.

The regional cook-off saw Ashleigh competing against the best up-and-coming young chefs throughout the New South Wales metropolitan area over a two day period.

The challenge was for each youngster to deliver their best dishes, and Ashleigh and her teammate Tegan Friedl certainly did that.

Some of the items on the winning menu included a butter and thyme poached pork loin with an oat and pork neck scotch egg, juniper berry jus and a tomato polenta.

And for the most important part of any meal, dessert, was a coconut pannacotta with rhubarb jelly, grapefruit curd, tuile and spun sugar.

Ashleigh entered the Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award to see how she would stack up against other young chefs in Sydney.

“I competed last year, so when the opportunity came up again I didn’t hesitate,” Ashleigh said.

“I enjoyed the experience and it’s a great way for young chefs to further their culinary skills.”

Western Sydney Airport a key issue on new Macquarie MP’s agenda

usan Templeman travelled to Canberra for the first time as a Federal MP on Friday, attending her first Labor caucus meeting after winning the seat of Macquarie earlier this month.

The Labor MP will be spending plenty of time in the nation’s capital in the next three years after winning Macquarie at her third attempt.

“I’m feeling really excited about the privilege I’ve been given, it’s something I have been working towards for a long time,” Ms Templeman said.

“Now, there will be a number of issues I’ll be starting to pursue.”

The biggest priority for Ms Templeman is the Western Sydney Airport and she vows to work with the community on this issue to have the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) reviewed.

“I want to make sure proper investigations are done in regards to this document,” she said.

Gonski is also an important issue for the new Macquarie MP who acknowledges that it would be devastating if schools were to miss out on additional funding that would ensure all kids get a good education.

“I’m going to be talking to teachers and parents in the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury area as a priority to find out what I can do to help them in regards to this issue,” she said.

Other issues that Ms Templeman vows to look at include budget cuts in mental health services, aged care and hospitals.

It will be a few weeks before we see the member move into her new home at the Macquarie office in Windsor.

Preparing for the worst chool kids will be better prepared in a bushfire emergency thanks to Premier Mike Baird, who visited Warrimoo Public School last Tuesday to launch a new NSW Rural Fire Service program.

Mr Baird, along with the Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott and NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, visited the school to watch volunteers teach the program to students for the first time.

“Unfortunately we are all familiar with the devastation a bushfire can cause and it’s important that communities have a plan and know exactly what they will do,” Mr Baird said.

“We know the bushfires will come and what we need to do is be prepared for them.”

By having a comprehensive educational bushfire safety program across primary schools, more communities will gain an understanding of their bushfire risk and know what they have to do to be prepared.

As part of the three-step program which has been 18 months in the making, students will learn the information, practice in scenario-based exercises and share their knowledge with family and friends.

Many RFS brigades are already working with their local school community, so the NSW RFS Guide to Working with School Communities program will support those relationships with a structured learning plan aligned with the curriculum, and encourage other schools to introduce the lessons into the classroom.

he highly anticipated 23rd Blue Mountains Winter Magic Festival will be held this Saturday, June 18, in Katoomba.

The free annual community event is celebrated around the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.

The streets will be lined with stalls and musicians, dancers, drummers and choirs will all be performing.

The grand parade starts at 11.30am and is the highlight of the festival with over 500 participants, ranging from toddlers to seniors, walking in the spectacle.

There will also be multiple live entertainment stages, a family fun zone, a busking competition and fireworks at 6.30pm.

This year’s headline act that will close out the festival will be local award winning artist Claude Hay. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Where The Magic Things Are’.

The festival committee is asking people to consider what magic means to them, whether it is the magic of community, the magic of the Blue Mountains or the magic of winter.

Everyone is encouraged to come in costume.

Unlike many festivals run by Chambers of Commerce and Councils, this event is run by community volunteers.

“This not for profit festival is entirely self supporting and organised by a small group of unpaid volunteers,” said Charity Mirow, one of the event organisers.

“We know that over 30 per cent of household waste sent to the City’s landfill in Blaxland is garden vegetation,” Cr Greenhill said.

mprovements to address safety issues at Hazelbrook Village car park have been proposed in Blue Mountains City Council’s 2017-2018 draft budget.

Councillor Romola Hollywood welcomed the improvements in the draft budget, which is currently on public display.

“Addressing the safety issues in the car park is a top priority for our community,” Cr Hollywood said.

“In 2014, in consultation with local shop owners and community members, Council developed a Masterplan for the Hazelbrook Village.

“It’s been frustrating that we agreed on a solution to the ongoing problems in the car park in the Hazelbrook Masterplan but to date there hasn’t been funding available to complete these much-needed improvements.

“I am thrilled that funding has now been proposed in the draft budget.”

In the draft budget, Council has proposed to allocate $360,000 to improvements at the Hazelbrook car park including making the car park one-way, installing stamped and coloured thresholds to the entries and exits and widening the eastern footpath.

Blaxland man Ben Felten will become the first blind person in the world to compete at a motorsport event next year when he challenges the world record for the fastest motorcycle speed ridden while blindfolded. read an article this week purporting that starting a business in your early 20s is the best way to be a successful business owner. I am making an educated guess that the author of the article is likely to be in their early 20s and has no comparison, because I found it difficult to agree with any of it! Here are some of the reasons put forward: Right time to adopt new technology (“You cannot expect a 55-year-old to have the same level of excitement to use apps as a 17-year-old).

This point was downright insulting!

While there are some older people who are technology averse, there are many, particularly in business, who have embraced it.

Additionally, the author also stated “… in your 20s you can learn and unlearn anything you want”, implying that the same is not true if you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

This shows an embarrassing lack of knowledge about lifelong learning and the ability for the human brain to keep changing and learning as a more mature adult.

Ability to take risks (“When you are young, you can afford to take risks, fail in your business and rise up again”).

Older business owners actually often take on more risk, as they understand that time is of an essence. They are far more motivated to take a risk and make it work for their family or other commitments. They also have the wisdom to know what is a sensible risk and what is not worth it.

High energy level (“The young generation has more energy, enthusiasm and motivation compared to Baby Boomers and Generation X”).

This one actually made me laugh out loud! I suppose all of us in our early 20s thought this about older generations.

But with the benefit of hindsight and experience, I can say without a doubt that my energy and enthusiasm is far higher now than in my 20s. My motivation to succeed has also increased exponentially.

Success in business has very little to do with a person’s age.

Run a competition Run a standalone competition or partner with another business with your target market to do a giveaway – they will post it on their socials so your business name will get to their fans too. One of the conditions of entering can be that they need to be following your socials to be eligible to win. Make sure you are following the Facebook and Instagram competition guidelines.

Like posts (and comment) Keep on the lookout for posts that correspond with the services you offer and like the posts, and better yet, comment.

A strange thing happened in the financial world last week. An event so unusual, that I can’t ever recall seeing similar in my 25 years in the advice industry. And what was this mysterious event?

A fund manager actually closed down their fund, and returned all monies to its investors.

Now I have certainly seen managed funds close before.

And yes, I have seen plenty return money back to investors. But in all those cases, it was because of management incompetence and failure rather than the reason cited

for this closure. And that reason, fear. That’s right, you read that correctly, fear.

The Chief Investment Officer for Altair Funds management, Philip Parker, cited his reason for closing their flagship fund as a genuine fear of an impending financial calamity. It seems this calamity is so great that he expects it to destroy share and property prices by up

to 50 per cent. And because he cites his greatest responsibility is to protect investor wealth, the best course of action was to simply pull up stakes and “get out of town” (my words not his).

It is truly a strange world when a fund manager ‘loses it’ because he sees markets as extremely overvalued and is terrified of the consequence. And a consequence so concerning that he closes his ‘bread and butter’ and totally risks his reputation into the bargain. Call me old fashioned but one would think the whole reason for fund managers, is to navigate the stormy waters of the Investment Sea for us, so we simple folk don’t drown. It now appears not to be the case.

I do hope this doesn’t start a trend in other professions.

I would hate to think my surgeon suggesting halfway through an operation that it was getting really scary, “so let’s sow him up and go home”.

And is the fund manager right about a calamity, or could there be a hidden reason for this feeling of concern for his clients. My experience suggests that a kind, caring and concerned nature is certainly not a trait common in the funds management industry.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

T

here may be plenty of opinionated voices on the comedy scene, but lovable Irish funny man Jimeoin isn’t one of them.

“I don’t really have strong opinions on things, I more like to observe,” the comedian explained.

“It’s not really my comedy style to pass judgments on other groups of people or the way we should live.”

With his laid-back and delightfully silly style Jimeon prefers to turn his attention inwards.

“I’m more concerned about my own shortcomings, and believe you me there’s plenty of them,” he laughs.

“If you point them out you realise they’re very common and you don’t feel so bad.

“It helps people to think ‘oh, he’s as big a f**k up as I am’,” he laughed.

Having been a fixture in Australian comedy since the early 90s, Jimeoin has had plenty of time to perfect his craft.

Fine tuning the ultimate set is a work of collaboration between the comedian and his audience.

“You never quite get it right the first time, you might get the wording a little off or something,” Jimeoin said.

“Over time, over maybe five or six gigs, you refine it and get it to a good level.

“Often with my best jokes I was trying to do one thing and then something else got a laugh.”

Jimeoin will be coming to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers this July with his latest stand-up show ‘Renonsense Man’.

When describing the show the popular comedian has the same straight forward, no-nonsense approach he brings to his comedy.

“Well, it’s a comedy show and it’s very funny, if I do say so myself,” he said.

While Australia was the birthplace of his comedy career, Jimeoin is currently focused on replicating that success a little closer to home, with shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a 2018 tour of Ireland.

“I work in the UK probably more now than Australia,” he said.

“It’s started to take off a bit over the last eight years, so I thought there’s clearly a big market here.

Plus I’m from that part of the world, so it makes sense.

“I also don’t want to die wondering.”

Jimeoin will be bringing his show ‘Renonsense Man’ to the Evan Theatre on Friday, July 7 at 8pm.

s part of events for National Refugee Week, Syrian-American composer and pianist Malek Jandali will be using his music to introduce audiences to the history of Syria.

An esteemed artist and humanitarian, Jandali has been internationally recognised for his dedication to building peace through music.

This is an energetic and expressive medium where you can transform drawings by printing them.

The artworks can be developed by adding successive layers, using different surfaces to draw on and by adding colour. Edgar Degas used monotype to start his pastel drawings, and it offers new ideas for further bodies of work. Experienced printmakers will be able to bring along previous plates or prints and add to these images.

anthers utility Tyrone Peachey is a changed man after the birth of his beautiful little princess, Penelope, back in January this year.

The 25-year-old former Cronulla Shark was once the life of the party, often hitting the town for a night of fun and drinks after a Penrith victory.

However, these days, things are a lot different at the Peachey household.

Not only is the Indigenous All Star recently engaged to his partner and mother of his child, Kellie, but he’s also neck deep in daddy duties.

“I do the nappies and all that,” Peachey admitted to the Record.

“It’s been four and bit months since Penelope was born, she’s getting big now.”

Before Penelope’s birth earlier this year, Panthers insiders say the livewire backrower was your typical young NRL star – living life as if the world revolved around them.

However, the birth of his daughter has changed Peachey for the better. He now prefers to stay at home and watch his daughter play than decide who will buy the next round of drinks.

“The best thing is seeing her little smile, everything about her is perfect,” Peachey said.

“She’s so cute and she’s starting to get a little personality now.

“It has settled me down; I don’t want to leave her. She’s too cute and growing up too fast.”

As with all new mums and dads, being a parent certainly has its challenges.

Whether it’s dealing with a sickness, changing a nappy or calming down a tantrum – parenthood certainly isn’t for everyone.

Peachey said he’s received some much needed advice from his fellow Panther teammates, like James Tamou, Sam McKendry and Dean Whare, who are also young fathers.

“Some of the boys told me that if the baby is crying and I’m a bit rattled by it, to make sure the missus is close,” he joked.

“There’s a few of the boys having kids now, so training has turned into a bit of a ‘Father Club’ which is good.”

Joining Peachey in ‘Father Club’ soon will be teammates Josh Mansour and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, who also announced recently that they too were expecting their first children with their respective partners.

layers from the Springwood United Football Club are donating their used boots to a worthy cause.

Boots for Cambodia is a project devised by the club’s chaplain Damon Dreves, who is travelling to Cambodia on June 16 to donate boots to soccer teams in Siem Reap.

“Most of the kids can’t afford to buy soccer boots, so they just play in whatever shoes they have or barefoot,” Dreves said.

“We are really trying to encourage the kids to get involved and play soccer, and the boots will make a big difference.

“I’m told they could also really use some tshirts to play in as well, so we are planning on giving them some club jerseys too.”

Mr Dreves has been travelling to Cambodia to help local communities in need since 2007.

“My first trip over was with my son,” he said.

“We decided we wanted to get involved in a project that built homes for families.”

Currently, Springwood United FC has collected two bags full of boots and jerseys, which is enough to fund a whole team.

If you wish to donate a pair of unused boots, take them to Springwood United FC’s clubhouse in Winmalee by June 12.
