Push to decrease speed limits Council agrees to write to Roads Minister calling for 10km/h reductions along Blackheath strip ERIN MAMO

lackheath residents wanting the speed limit reduced along the strip of the highway that runs through their home have been dealt a small win, with Council unanimously agreeing to agitate for the change.

At the recent Council meeting, Ward 1 Councillor, Kerry Brown put forward a motion that Council writes to the NSW Minister for Roads, Melinda Pavey, to express their concerns over speed limits in the upper Blue Mountains, particularly along the Great Western Highway at Blackheath.

“This motion has come from the community,” Cr Brown said.

“The Great Western Highway really shapes our townships in the Blue Mountains.

“It would be much more pleasant to have the vehicles passing through some small towns, like Blackheath, slow down.”

Cr Brown said the ideal change would be reducing the 80km/h zone to 70 and reducing the 60km/h zone to 50.

A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesperson said it recently reviewed the speed limits on the Great Western

Highway through the Blue Mountains.

“The review determined the speed limits on the highway between Blackheath and Mt Victoria, including through the Blackheath township, are appropriate and in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines,” the spokesperson said.

“The Great Western Highway is the main arterial route for motorists between Lithgow and Penrith and is the primary access for all of the townships across the Blue Mountains.”

Local residents, Michael and Carolyn Vanlangenberg, said they have been pushing to have the speed limit through Blackheath changed for seven years.

As part of the Blackheath Community Alliance, Mr and Mrs Vanlangenberg have developed an action group to continue to push for the change in speed limits.

Cr Brown said if nothing else, installing a safety camera at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Govetts Leap Road would help reduce speeding drivers.

“Trucks are a big problem along this strip particularly at night,” she said.

The RMS spokesperson said speeding is addressed through high visibility policing and the use of mobile speed cameras.

There are currently no plans to install a speed camera at the location.

Sylvanvale celebrates 70 years Quiet achiever marks 70 years of providing disability services to locals ERIN MAMO

ne of the region’s longest running disability service providers celebrated 70 years of working alongside people in the Blue Mountains community last Friday with a morning tea at the Carrington Hotel.

The Sylvanvale Foundation, which was established in 1947 by a small group of parents committed to giving their children with a disability a better quality of life, has gone from strength to strength over the years, providing group homes, transportation as well as the first centre for children with an intellectual or physical disability to gain an education.

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, who attended the morning tea, said Sylvanvale has been a quiet but important service in the Mountains.

“It is important to acknowledge that Sylvanvale have made a real difference to the lives of many people in the Blue Mountains,” Ms Templeman said.

“In just our region alone, there are currently 11 group homes run by the organisation which house adults with complex disabilities.”

Executive General Manager at Sylvanvale, Cathy Quinn, said the organisation would not be where it is today if it wasn’t

“Sylvanvale was founded by community so there has always been a lot of community warmth in the project,” Ms Quinn said.

“This structure keeps everything

grounded and connected to the purpose, which is quality of life for people with a disability.”

State MP, Trish Doyle and Councillor, Kerry Brown, were also in attendance on the day, as were family members of the original founders of Sylvanvale.

Refunds would hurt rate payers Blue Mountains residents who have been overcharged by Council for garbage bins won’t be getting a full refund.

At last week’s Council meeting, Councillors deliberated as to what the solution was for residents who were being charged for two waste services for a number of years.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said he firmly believed that the money that has been taken accidentally from residents is in fact their money and should be returned to them.

However, Cr Greenhill and many other Councillors agreed that if they are to reimburse the residents who have been overcharged for their waste service, it could come at a cost to other rate payers.

“I would give all the money back if I was satisfied there was no effect to other rate payers,” Cr Greenhill said.

“But if we go and reimburse people for over five years’ worth of what they are owed, we risk having to raise rates again.”

In mid-2016 it came to light that some residents in the Blue Mountains were being charged for more than one waste service when the new green bin service was rolled out.

A motion was passed that noted three recommendations acknowledging that all overcharging claims are historic, that there’s a two year limit on credits for overcharging and an amendment of guidelines which would allow Council to provide up to five years’ credit to individual applicants.

Local artist donates work to hospital David Robert Hill gifts large collection of paintings to Nepean Hospital in thanks for recent treatment ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains artist, David Robert Hill, has generously donated a collection of his paintings to Nepean Hospital in appreciation of his treatment there recently.

Last Tuesday, the artist visited the South Block corridor of Nepean Hospital with Urological Surgeon, Mohamed Khadra, to view the 22-piece collection that is now hanging proudly on the walls.

Mr Hill said he decided to donate the collection to the Penrith hospital after spending two days there.

“I was in the hospital to have some prostate tests done,” Mr Hill said.

“I hadn’t been admitted into a hospital since I was a child and I was very impressed by the duty of care and friendliness of the nurses and doctors at Nepean.”

At 79, the well-known Katoomba-based artist has been painting for over 40 years and said the collection he has donated is inwardly focused.

“This collection has a dream-like, subjective aspect to it,” Mr Hill said.

“It’s about looking on the inside rather than the outside.”

Blue Mountains artist David Robert Hill looks at some of the work on display at Nepean Hospital to the hospital came to him when he woke up one morning and looked in the mirror.

“I realised, I’m not getting any younger,” he said.

“It occurred to me, I have a house full of paintings, what am I going to do with all of them?”

He said it dawned on him that others could get enjoyment out of his work.

“In the hospital, lots of sick people who are coming in and out will be able to see them,” Mr Hill said.

Locally, Mr Hill’s artwork is currently on show at Gallery One88 in Katoomba.

The London-born artist has also just released an art book called The Painters Art that is available for purchase at Gallery One88 for $35.

The book features a collection of Mr Hill and other local Blue Mountains artists’ works, as well as poetry.

Local songstress secures spot in Eurovision Song Contest 2017 ERIN MAMO

ocal, Anja Nissen, who won ‘The Voice’ in 2014 will now compete in the all singing, all dancing Eurovision contest in May. The 21-year-old, who attended Winmalee High School, recently competed in the ‘Melodi Grand Prix’ in Denmark which secured her a place in the massive singing contest, which draws an estimated 180 million viewers each year.

Ms Nissen, who was born in Sydney, said representing Denmark, where her parents are from, is something she had always dreamed of.

“My parents moved to Australia when they were young and I was born in Westmead Hospital,” she said.

“To represent their home country in Eurovision is like a dream that’s become a reality.

“I’m super excited about getting to Kiev in May.” After a whirlwind following her success on ‘The Voice’, the songstress is currently living in Denmark where she is recording music and learning more about her native culture.

While there, Ms Nissen was invited by a national broadcaster to perform at the ‘Grand Prix’, for the second year in a row.

Winmalee school student gets bitten on ankle by spider About 2.20pm on Thursday, February 23, Winmalee High School students were abseiling at the rear of the school when a 16-year-old male student was bitten by a spider on his ankle.

An ambulance was called and Police Rescue attended and the victim was carried out of the bush by stretcher.

The male was taken to hospital but released a short time later.

“I still have a room at my parents’ house who live on property,” she said.

“I miss it – swimming in the dam, and just being able to relax and be completely alone.”

Shortly after winning the Aussie competition, Ms Nissen flew to Los Angeles to work with her former ‘The Voice’ coach Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas.

Since then Ms Nissan has released three hits and enjoyed success on iTunes.

Recently her song ‘Who Had a Heart’ featured on Channel 9’s ‘Love Child’.

On Saturday, February 25, a 20-year-old female from Hazelbrook, with three outstanding warrants, was recognised by Police out the front of a café on Katoomba Street, Katoomba.

Police approached the female and attempted to arrest her, but she became extremely violent and was attempting self harm by resisting arrest and hitting her head on the ground.

Shortly after, the female was subdued and taken to Katoomba Police Station and charged with the outstanding warrants.

The female’s bail was refused.

Woman seriously injured after falling down fire escape About 5.30pm on Friday, February 24, a 63-year-old female resident of The Ritz Nursing Home in Leura was seriously injured after she fell four metres down the stairs of an external fire escape.

The female was conveyed by Care Flight to

Westmead Hospital where she had surgery two days later.

The woman’s injuries included a fractured left femur, possible fractures to both lower limbs and a possible facial fracture.

Stolen car destroyed by fire at Springwood tennis courts In the early hours of the morning of Wednesday, February 22, residents in Spring Street, Springwood were awoken by the sound of a car alarm going off.

The noise was found to be coming from a car that was on fire in the tennis court car park on Spring Street.

Police attended the scene, however the vehicle was well alight by this time and was completely destroyed.

After the event, the vehicle was reported stolen from the Penrith area. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Teenagers to face court over train seat removal Two teenagers will face court next month after allegedly removing seats on a train travelling between Lithgow and Katoomba.

The seats were allegedly damaged between 10.20pm and 11.20pm on Tuesday, February 14.

The incidents were reported to officers attached to the Police Transport Command and an investigation commenced.

ixons Trees, a local, reliable and professional tree removal company is now offering the Mountains a crane hire service.

The Lawson-based company, which has provided tree removal services to the Mountains and surrounding areas for more than seven years, is offering the equipment for hire following the recent purchase of a Liebherr mobile crane.

The 30 tonne crane has a boom extension length of 30 meters with two further attachments to gain a total of 46 meters, giving Dixons plenty of range to work with.

Owner, Phil Dixon, said he is looking forward to expanding the business with the new crane and has already gained several clients requiring regular crane hire.

“In the tree removal business, the new crane allows us to comfortably remove trees efficiently,” Mr Dixon said.

“We are finding our clientele are really pleased with the versatility of the crane and being able to access difficult, tight areas.”

Outside of tree lopping, Dixons has been working with local builders, lifting frames, trusses and steel beams.

Other customers have also hired the team to lift pools, spas, landscape materials, site sheds, water tanks and machinery.

Mr Dixon said his crane goes out at an hourly rate of $220 and is billed from yard to yard as opposed to charging customers a four hour minimum, which makes it beneficial and feasible for clients with small, quick jobs.

“We are also happy to work in conjunction with other tree businesses to assist in tree removal and are looking forward to building positive relationships,” he said.

Mr Dixon and his professional crew are experienced in all aspects of their service and are currently the only crane service in the Blue Mountains.

Conversely, have you had a fantastic idea, only to find that someone else has beat you to the punch and created a successful business around it? Or have you had a great idea in your head for ages but haven’t made any progress on it?

But at some point, you need to think about a range of practicalities. You need to have the capacity to produce the product or deliver the service. You need to know how to market the idea. You need to determine how you will deliver your product or service, the costs involved and how you will make a profit. A business model will give you direction.

Be in it for the long haul There are very few ideas that find success ‘overnight’.

If you want your idea to move from dream to reality, you need to be prepared to work extremely hard and keep believing in your idea.

Build anticipation by letting your audience know you’ll be going live a day in advance and try to broadcast for at least 10 minutes. Facebook allows a maximum of 90 minutes and Instagram 60, so make the most of your time as it’s another free tool to promote your business and get across social media.

Try different types of broadcast topics such as a Q&A, breaking news, behind

the scenes or conduct an interview, performance or demonstration.

To go live on Facebook, click ‘What’s on your mind’ at the top of your news feed and select ‘Live Video’ from the dropdown menu. Add a catchy description, choose your audience and hit ‘Go Live’.

Whilst you are live you’ll see comments and interactions start rolling in on your screen. Once you are finished broadcasting, your video will save to your timeline for others to view if they weren’t active whilst you were live.

To go live on Instagram, tap the camera icon on the top left of your screen, tap ‘live’ and ‘start live video’. Just like Facebook, you’ll start to see comments and hearts roll in. When you are done, your live video on Instagram will disappear.

I bet you didn’t know that the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes actually suggested saving money could harm an economy; he called it the “Paradox of Thrift”. Saved money is not spent money, and it is spent money that ‘oils’ the economic wheels. If money is withheld (saved) from an economy, demand for goods and services diminishes, this lessens output and therefore profits. But wait, there’s more. The reduced productivity causes incomes to drop which then sends the economy into a downward

Now, Mr Keynes didn’t postulate his theory based on an individual’s saving regime, rather as a consequence of the whole population doing it at the same time. It seems that we tend to start saving ‘en masse’ at the worst possible time. As soon as we think the economy is starting to slow, we begin to pay down our debt and put money

aside for the inevitable ‘rainy day’. Unfortunately it is just this type of sensible preparedness that actually makes everything worse!

Strange isn’t it. Saving money has always been regarded as a good trait and is certainly encouraged. Yet according to Keynes, if we were all to adopt this “good trait”, our economy would contract into recession and possibly depression.

So it really is a case of too much of a ‘good thing’ bringing us all undone. You might recall during the GFC, Australian taxpayers were given $900 to spend. This was the Government’s antidote to an anticipated wave of thrift.

Well guess what, the most recent national account figures show the Australian economy has grown by 1.1% in the last quarter, reversing the 0.5% decline from the previous three months to December 1. GDP falling in two successive quarters is considered to be a recession, so it seems our spending has saved the day.

Therefore, any arguments with your partner about spending habits can now be easily settled just by quoting Keynsian economic theory, while noting your purchases as vital economic stimulus rather than wastage. Give it a go; I’m sure it will work.

amien Leith is back in the Mountains as part of his Hall of Fame Tour celebrating the legendary American singersongwriter, Roy Orbison.

The Irish musician, who won ‘Australian Idol’ in 2006, is set to perform at the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood on Saturday, March 11 and is excited to be returning to the area. “My family and I love coming out to the Mountains, it’s a place we visit a lot,�

The Hall of Fame show will commemorate 30 years since the late Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll and Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

Damien plans to perform some of the Rock and Roll pioneer’s well known hits such as ‘In Dreams’, ‘Crying’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Oh Pretty Woman’, ‘Only the Lonely’ and ‘Blue Angel’.

The singer said the show is a favourite of his because he gets to stand on stage and celebrate Roy Orbison’s incredible career.

But he said he doesn’t try to emulate the distinctive, brooding sound Orbison was known for.

“I don’t try to impersonate Roy or sound like him,� Damien said. “It’s really a case of me saluting one of the all-time greatest singers. “Roy’s songs are raw and real and melded together with that distinct melancholy intensity of his voice.�

Damien said he has always had a strong affinity with Orbison’s music.

Growing up in Ireland he distinctly remembers his aunty always singing Roy Orbison songs to him, and when he is up on stage performing it takes him back to those earlier years.

To add to the memories, Damien was lucky enough to work with Orbison’s late wife, Barbara. “I was able to work with Barbara a few years ago, so that was pretty special,� he said.

And if he could ask the talented Roy Orbison one thing, what would it be? “I’d love to know how he developed his voice and prepared for a show,� Damien said. “It’s funny, because most singers open their mouth wider when they want to sing higher notes, but Roy never seemed to do this.�

Roy Orbison died of a heart attack on December 6, 1988.

He was aged just 52.

Ê It might seem unbelievable but it’s true, American soap ‘Days of our Lives’ has been renewed for a 52nd season.

Recently it was speculated that the long running NBC drama may finally come to an end, however that was refuted last week with TV bosses giving the show yet another year of life. In January, ‘Days’ aired its 13,000th episode. Ê

Netflix will screen stand-up event ‘Amy Schumer: The Leather Special’ tonight, Tuesday, March 7. In the show, Schumer targets binge drinking as well as her relationship with her boyfriend.

Ê New Channel Nine action series ‘Lethal Weapon’ has been renewed for a full 22 episodes. While the show hasn’t reached great heights here, it is performing very well in the US. Ê Country music-inspired drama ‘Nashville’ delivered probably its biggest ever

twist in the US last week, but Australian fans still have five or six weeks before they’ll see the episode here, because of Foxtel and Showcase’s insistence on delaying the new season. Unfortunately, the twist was so big that anyone following the show or its cast on social media would have had the surprise spoiled already.

With former reality show winners like Guy Sebastian and Dami Im getting a run in previous years, will 2017’s competition be any different? Let the guessing games begin!

Ê Get ready ‘Survivor’ fans, the brand new series ‘Survivor: Game Changers: Mamanuca Islands’ will premiere at 7.30pm this Thursday, March 9 on GO! The new series, filmed in Fiji, features returning players including Ozzy, Cirie, Tai, Sierra and Brad. It will air express from the US.

Ê Todd Sampson’s new series ‘Life on the Line’ begins on ABC next month, testing the laws of Physics first-hand.

There’s no such thing as unhealthy foods In the pursuit of the perfect diet, we have forgotten that food should be enjoyed in moderation no matter how good or bad it’s deemed to be...

Without fail when people find out I’m a nutritionist they always ask the same question: “is [insert food] healthy?”

My answer often gets met with a confused look.

“There’s really no such thing as ‘unhealthy’ food.”

Now I know what you’re thinking. But what about donuts and chips and pizza and all those other high fat, high sugar and high sodium foods. Surely they’re not healthy?

Well yes, they can most definitely be part of a healthy diet.

You see when it comes to nutrition we spend way too much time focused on individual foods and forget to look at the bigger picture.

For example, if you live on nutrient void foods then yes, there’s a greater chance that your health will suffer. But on the flip side of the coin you can most certainly eat donuts and still be healthy.

You see the real issue is our limited definition of health. We see foods as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or worthy of ‘guilt’ (think

‘guilt free’ recipes). We see slim bodies as healthy and larger bodies as unhealthy.

But as with most aspects of life things aren’t that simple.

You can’t look at a person and know how much physical activity they engage in, what foods they eat or the state of their mental health.

You can’t say lollies are ‘unhealthy’ when they can be a life saver to a diabetic with low blood sugar levels.

The truth is unless you have a medical condition that requires a restricted diet there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the foods you like in moderation.

While that chocolate bar may not offer

many essential vitamins and minerals, if it brings you enjoyment how can it not be good for you?

As a society we’ve become so focused on the perfect diet that we are now seeing a rise in orthorexia, an eating disorder that is characterised by obsessive behaviour in pursuit of a healthy diet.

Again, there’s obviously nothing wrong with wanting to consume nutrient-rich foods, but if it’s getting to the point where your mental and physical health is suffering is it really still ‘healthy’?

The Panthers were embarrassed 42-10 at Kogarah Oval last Saturday by a St GeorgeIllawarra side most expect to finish in the bottom half of the table.

From the opening whistle, the Panthers simply couldn’t compete with a Dragons side that produced one of their best performances in years.

The Panthers couldn’t match the intensity of the Dragons, who jumped out to a 12-0 lead and were never headed.

“It’s a very disappointing way to start the year,” Panthers skipper Matt Moylan said.

“We just turned over too much ball and they were very good when they had the ball.”

The Panthers will be looking to bounce back when they take on the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

The club is also dealing with an off-field issue, with revelations last weekend that a woman was paid $50,000 to have an abortion after falling pregnant to star second-rower, Bryce Cartwright.
