Teen set to make his mark on Wanderers ERIN MAMO

Springwood teenager is well on his way to achieving his football dreams after signing a deal with the Western Sydney Wanderers.

17-year-old Henry Davies will play his first game in the red and black for the Wanderers’ National Youth League team against Newcastle this Sunday.

The teen, who has spent the last two years living in Canberra while playing for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) through a scholarship, said he is happy to be home and part of the team.

“I’ve been signed with the Wanderers for a year, so the aim now is to play my best and hopefully be offered a professional contract with the A-League team in the near future,” Davies said.

On top of playing soccer, the Springwood local is currently completing his High School Certificate by correspondence, so he faces a busy time ahead.

Davies started playing soccer when he was just six with Springwood Football Club.

His talent was quickly recognised when he attended Westfields Sports High School in Fairfield West and from there was offered a place at the AIS in Canberra.

Although he is a talented player, Davies admits he still gets nervous before each game.

“I pretty much just try not to think about a game until I get to the venue,” he said.

“I play music, make sure I eat well in the lead up and keep busy.”

Although this Sunday will be Davies’ first time playing as part of the National Youth League, he has actually already taken to the field in the red and black stripes before.

“I just finished a season playing for the Wanderers in the National Player League,” Davies said.

“We played 28 games and came second in the competition.”

In terms of his game, Davies wants to work on being more of a figure on the field.

“I play central defence, so I think I could work on being more of a leader on the field,” he said.

While Davies will now look to consolidate his spot in the Youth Team, there’s no doubt he has aspirations of playing in the A-League under Tony Popovic.

With the Wanderers going through huge change, it may indeed become a reality.

The Western Sydney Wanderers Youth team will play the Newcastle Jets Youth team at 4pm this Sunday at Jack Mclaughlin Oval in Newcastle.

Another week passes and more lives have been lost on Australian roads.

The road toll is out of control this year, with the number of people killed on NSW roads increasing by 14 per cent.

We are driving safer cars, yet having more accidents.

Something is seriously wrong.

There can be no doubt that distraction is an ever-growing problem on our roads.

You only have to drive around for a few hours to see how many people are focused on their phones – talking, texting and inexplicably checking social media while behind the wheel.

People will always run the gauntlet – but speeding and drink driving campaigns over the years have certainly made an impact.

Police now have a new battle to fight on

our roads and it’s not always as obvious as a speeding car or drunk driver.

Personally I think it’s time we increased fines, introduced licence suspensions and really cracked down on people using their phones while driving.

Perhaps it’s the only thing that will get the message through.

If we don’t act, it’s going to be an awful Christmas for too many families.

Lights, camera, action for students Teens from Blue Mountains Grammar School show their future may be in filmmaking ERIN MAMO

tudents from Blue Mountains Grammar School have walked away with not one but two wins at the recent Blue Mountains Youth Film Festival.

This year, the school entered seven films into the festival, five of which were shortlisted for the final which was held at Mt Vic Flicks in Mount Victoria.

Two of the five finalists were then awarded first and second place in the festival.

‘Brian and His Quest to Get Down and Boogie’, produced and directed by Year 10 students Alice Knight, Olivia Holmdahl and Claire Gillman, took out first place, while ‘Edge of Reality’, directed by Miranda Pecovnik with Cameron Grivas, Sarah Herrmann, Geraldine Weiss and Claire Gillen, was awarded second place.

Principal Trevor Barman said he is very proud of the talented students whose films were selected in the film festival.

“It was so pleasing to see so many of the students receiving recognition for their work,” Mr Barman said.

“This is a great achievement, not only for them, but also for our drama teachers at Blue Mountains Grammar School.”

The students who worked on the awardwinning film were given a ‘Golden Goat Award’ and sponsored entry into the prestigious Sacramento Film Festival taking place early next year in California.

recent ‘Screen It’ competition hosted by the Australian Centre for Moving Image and Blue Mountains Grammar were advised late last week that the film is actually the winner in their category.

The students who made the film will now travel to Melbourne in the next few weeks for the formal awards ceremony.

Blaxland grandad stars in new health app ERIN MAMO

laxland grandfather David Wilkinson has spent the last five years fighting prostate cancer and is now telling his story through a visually stimulating app.

‘Advanced Prostate Cancer Xplained’ is a free app available for download through mobile phone or iTunes, which has been designed for patients and families who are suffering the effects of prostate cancer.

Mr Wilkinson, who is also the President of the Nepean/Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group, features as the main character in the app, which charts his journey from diagnosis to now.

“I found out I had prostate cancer when I went for a routine annual health checkup,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“When a doctor looks at you and says ‘you have cancer’, it’s mind blowing.

“I don’t remember much more from that day, other than those words.”

Soon after he was diagnosed, Mr Wilkinson underwent radical surgery to remove the cancer but it had already spread to other parts of his body making it difficult for doctors to remove it all.

He is still fighting the cancer and recently finished a round of treatment.

The app, which has the support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, follows Mr Wilkinson in an attempt to explain the complicated disease through storytelling – considering things like surgery and treatment options, side effects, psychological issues and the role of patient support groups.

“For me, the prostate cancer diagnosis was terrifying and I looked for whatever support I could find,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“In this respect Dr Google was extensively used as was the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, but an app like this one would have been helpful as it shows that there is a life after a diagnosis.

“My wife Jan also features in the app as prostate cancer also affects partners.”

Dr Kim Chilman-Blair, Founder and CEO of Medicine X, the company behind the app, believes colourful and entertaining storytelling is the best way for patients to understand and retain information in order to make serious treatment decisions.

“Around 80 per cent of medical information provided by doctors is forgotten straight away,” Dr Chilman-Blair said. “’Advanced Prostate Cancer Xplained’ is designed to fill these gaps in a creative and powerful way.”

Historic Leura building staying put Council confirms heritage building housing Wayzgoose Cafe won’t be demolished as previously feared ERIN MAMO

he historic building that houses the much-loved Wayzgoose Cafe in Leura wont be knocked down, Council has announced.

For over a year, there has been talks that the entire building would be demolished due to structural damage, but Blue Mountains City Council has now confirmed that the heritage building will remain in place and undergo extensive repairs to improve its current condition.

General Manager, Robert Greenwood, said it was always Council’s intention to investigate all possible options for the redevelopment of the building.

“The nature of the redevelopment, being either alterations and extensions, or demolition and rebuild, was always pending a thorough review of options and designs based on the advice of an architectural team, including expert heritage advisors,” Mr Greenwood said.

The redevelopment of the site proposes to maintain the primary and recognisable heritage features, including the building facade, chimneys and fireplaces, the roof form and side awning.

Owner of the Wayzgoose Cafe, Mark Alchin, said this was all news to him.

“I haven’t had any contact with the Council. Unfortunately they wont respond to me,” Mr Alchin said.

Council are now planning to lodge a development application (DA) in early November which will detail the plans that they have for the building.

The proposal and design, as well as other supporting documents, will then go on display for public viewing and comment.

A decision regarding the DA will then be made after all public comments and submissions have been reviewed and taken into account.

At this stage it is unclear whether Mr Alchin will be able to move back into the building after it is re-developed.

Mr Alchin said due to the events that have surrounded the cafe over the last 12 months he has had trouble with both hiring and retaining staff.

“We don’t know how much longer we are going to be here so we have lost a lot of staff to other positions that can offer them more security,” he said.

“I understood initially that I was going to be offered a lease in the re-developed building.”

For now, Council maintains that the Wayzgoose Cafe is able to continue their interim occupancy agreement.

Should you be adding gold to your portfolio?

So should we be buying gold as an investment or not? That is actually an easy question to answer. As part of a diversified portfolio, yes, you should have exposure to this commodity. But commonsense, as well as investment theory, suggests no more than about five per cent of your total portfolio.

There are a lot of doomsayers talking up the prospects of the metal as a result of the US election and the uncertainty surrounding the new president. Gold tends to be the commodity of choice whenever fear permeates the investment markets. But prices going up because of bad news can just as quickly fall with good news.

For me, gold investments are best done with jewellery or coins. A large ingot of gold may look impressive but it can’t really add any pleasure to your life the way wearing a nice piece of jewellery or a coin collection can. And no matter what form it takes, as long as it’s pure, you will always be able to convert it to cash when required. Time to check the fillings!

re you always sick and just can’t seem to get over it? Are you having trouble concentrating? Do you have a constant headache that just won’t go away? Are you having trouble sleeping well? Chances are you are over-stressed; and being a business owner, the likely cause of that stress is your business!

‘Stress’ is not an inherently bad thing.

When stress is within your comfort zone, it can help you to stay focused, energetic, and alert. It can help you perform under pressure, motivate you to do your best, and even keep you safe in dangerous situations. Stress is what keeps you alert during a presentation to a new client, or drives you to study for an exam.

But beyond your comfort zone, stress stops being helpful and can lead to a host of serious mental and physical health problems. The way most of us run our businesses these days, we can be so used to operating at a high level of stress that we don’t even realise the damage we are doing.

There are some daily things you can

do to alleviate your stress levels to a healthier, more sustainable level: • Move your body often. If you primarily sit at a desk, don’t sit for more than an hour. If your tasks involve a lot of standing, move to a different position or take a short walk outside.

• Listen to music that energises you and makes you feel good.

• Visualise your next holiday destination or your favourite place to relax.

This has the effect of switching your brain to a different ‘gear’ and can make you feel peaceful.

• Assess your diet and ensure you’re not ‘stress eating’. Many people crave sweet, empty calorie foods when they are stressed. Instead, ensure you are eating plenty of fruit/ veges and drinking lots of water.

• Get enough sleep. For those of us with younger children, this can be easier said than done! But most of us are aware that good quality sleep is best had by going to bed well before midnight, and limiting the use of screens in the hours before bed.

costs of running the business and add them to your costs for living – e.g. groceries, clothing and health. If your business is capable of covering the total then it is financially feasible.

But is there a market out there?

Look at your product/service and determine who is likely to use it. Then talk to those people, interview them or offer a survey to complete.

In that survey, or in that conversation, ask them how much they would pay for the product/service, offer at least three prices or price ranges. If they don’t wish to buy ask them why.

A good pilot study is normally 20-50 people. The larger your target market, the more people you need to talk to.

Analyse those responses to gain information about price range to charge, features to include in the product/service, and a profile of the market.

So that you can enhance the appeal of your product and minimise the outgoing costs.

Do this, and you have a better chance at avoiding business failure in the first three years of operation.

n a recent broadcast of ‘Q & A’ on the ABC, Melbourne journalist, Grace Collier suggested that one way to find a job was to start a business. And at the Western Sydney Business Centre we see a lot of individuals who want to do just that.

But even before then, you need to realise that running a small business is not a guaranteed cure to a finding a job.

The statistics related to start-up businesses are not encouraging.

orkin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a living.

It’s the song lyric that’s been stuck in our heads since the 80s, and now the classic Dolly Parton hit is coming to Penrith.

Penrith Musical Comedy Company will be bringing their production of ‘9 to 5: The Musical’ to The Joan stage in November.

Based on the 1980 hit movie, the show is set in an office where three of the female employees – Doralee, Violet and Judy – set

out to get revenge on their lying, misogynistic boss.

Taking on the role of Doralee is Fiona Brennan, who was drawn to the unexpected complexity of the character who was played by Dolly Parton in the film version.

“I like that at face value she seems kind of two dimensional but really when you delve a bit into it she’s quite multilayered,” she said.

“She’s not just this kind of Barbie figure, she’s got feelings and there’s a lot more going on upstairs than people might think.”

This will be the first time the musical

has been performed in Australia, and for Leanne Smith, who plays the role of Violet, this is part of the reason she was keen to be involved in the show.

“You have no real benchmark to go off, it’s a completely fresh new direction from the director,” she said.

“You can really explore and take the show in many different ways because no one really has any preconceived ideas.”

The Penrith Musical Comedy Company has been a staple in local theatre since 1978, having produced more than 60 musicals.

Rachael Gillfeather – who plays the role of Judy and has been involved in multiple

productions with the company – said that it’s the people and the work environment that keeps her coming back.

“I really like this company, it’s so easy to work with them,” she said.

“It’s a great space to work in and everyone, right from the president down to the last ensemble member, they’re all really fun to work with, so that’s why I do it.”

Making changes to your diet is a very worthy goal to set.

Unfortunately with so much conflicting information it can be easy to think you’re making healthier choices when you’re not.

This week I thought I’d run through some of the common mistakes people make and how to avoid them.

Cutting out all your favourite ‘junk’ foods There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a donut every now and then. In fact, cutting out the foods you love altogether is the perfect trigger for a future binge session.

No matter how many people tell you they have the answer to a healthy diet the best approach always remains the same: eat mostly nutritious foods with the occasional treat and you’ll be doing well.

Thinking all salads and sandwiches are healthy It always pays to be wary when ordering lunch from places that sell salads, wraps and Turkish bread sandwiches.

While these stores are a great place to grab a healthy meal, some of the ingredients are just as high in calories, fat and sugar as a fast food burger.

If you’re aiming for a nutritious option, look for meals that include lots of salad, veggies or beans, and keep white breads, cheese, creamy sauces and fatty meats to a minimum.

Going overboard with juices and smoothies Not all juices and smoothies are created equal. Some can contain as much, if not more, calories and sugar than a main meal. Smoothies are particularly bad offenders as they often contain large amounts of milk, yoghurt and ice cream.

While this is fine for the occasional treat, for the best everyday option look for juices that contain vegetables as well as fruit. This will keep the calorie and sugar content down.

An injury can be very painful, but it’s important to know whether ice or heat is the best way to treat the problem...

There is a lot of confusion as to whether heat or ice should be used on injuries. It is important to note that both modalities serve a purpose and provide benefit for different situations.

Keeping this in mind, it is important to understand what you’re trying to achieve so you can utilise the most appropriate modality.

Ice Physiologically, ice causes blood vessels to narrow reducing blood flow to the area. This helps to soothe inflamed, hot, red and swollen tissues.

Acute inflammation can be uncomfortable to tolerate, so ice is a simple, drugless way to help numb pain from the inflammatory process.

However, it is important to remember that inflammation is a normal and essential biological process attempting to protect tissue by commencing the healing process.

You should always ice for a minimum of 20 minutes. The reason being, when soft tissue is exposed to ice or a temperature of under 10 degrees for 15 minutes or

longer, a process called cold induced vasodilation occurs. This is known as the Hunting response. Cyclic periods of vasoconstriction and dilatation help to flush out swelling and fluids in acute injuries.

With chronic pain patients, ice can be applied when pain levels have been aggravated beyond normal day-to-day limits. It can also be useful with the management of headaches. Applying ice to the base of the neck when experiencing a headache can decrease blood flow to the head and stop a “throbbing” type feeling.

Getting your makeup right can be easier than you think

I had the pleasure of bringing Styled

by Alyce Makeup to Westfield Penrith’s Beauty and Wellness Weekend!

Being a makeup artist, I love giving clients and customers little tricks and tips here and there that make doing everyday makeup easier – whether it’s a girl who loves full glam or a mum who prefers a little five-minute situation.

At the event doing tutorials, I focused on different areas of the face. My favourite though, is how to contour/highlight and create flawless skin.

To start off I like to use a good moisturiser to prep the skin before any product is used. Then go in with a makeup primer, a nice pore-filling primer is great and will make your skin appear a lot smoother, filling in any fine lines and helping your makeup to last longer – I love Benefit’s Porefessional.

When choosing a foundation for your skin, you have more to think about than just picking the right colour.

Have a think about how makeup usually reacts as you wear it. Do you get more oily

during the day? Do you find any rough, dry patches?

For more of an oily skin, I like to use a lightweight HD formula – my favourite right now is Makeup Forever HD stick foundation. This makes sure it isn’t too heavy and, being HD, the particles are so small that they blend with your skin flawlessly and are untraceable instead of the dreaded wearing-a-mask look. If you have dry skin go for something more emollient like a cream foundation or a moisturising liquid one.

Next, I like to highlight cheekbones and conceal under the eye at the same time using a high coverage concealer, like Mac prolongwear. Pick a colour a few shades

lighter than your face and take the product, blending it out towards your cheeks.

Powder your face well to set your base.

Using a matte bronzer like Benefit Hoola creates definition applying to the natural shadows of the face.

After contouring always remember to highlight, this further enhances your features.

Layer your highlight products by first applying a cream illuminator with your fingertips, then go in with a powder highlight to really glisten and make those cheekbones pop!

Finish with a peachy blush and you’re ready for any event!

Title beckons for Blue Sox he Australian Baseball League (ABL) heads into its seventh season this summer, but after five finals appearances in six years, the Sydney Blue Sox are yet to yield a Championship.

Into his fifth year at the helm, Manager Jason Pospishil, is driven to end the drought.

“We have had a little bad luck in past years or we have been one piece away, but it’s not something you can lose sleep over,” he said.

For the Blue Sox and their fan base, there is a sense of belief for the upcoming season.

The elusive Championship beckons and Pospishil has taken a philosophical approach to what lies ahead.

“I’ve been so impressed at the shape all the boys are in and their performances so far in spring have been great,” he said.

“At the end of the day, you prepare to the best of your ability.”

In addition to the wealth of local talent across the state, importing quality players from international leagues adds immense value to the squad.

“We have exciting prospects lined up for the season, which will bring another dynamic to the club,” Pospishil said.
