Council to chase fire money

ellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week, an initiative that was started by a Springwood family, is happening this week, May 7 to 14.

The week, which aims to promote initiatives that will bring about improved road safety and highlights the rise in Australia’s road toll, is the biggest to date with the Sydney Harbour Bridge currently lit up bright yellow.

Springwood local and President of Safer Australian Roads and Highways, Peter Frazer, said people need to get involved in road safety.

“Last year, 1300 people were killed and 35,000 were seriously injured on Australia’s roads,” he said.

“I believe that each of us has a responsibility and a role to play in making our roads safer and in reducing this unacceptable level of trauma.”

Mr Frazer started Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week with his family after his daughter was hit and killed by a truck in 2012.

Sarah Frazer, 23 at the time, was travelling to Wagga Wagga when her car broke down and a truck crashed into both her and the tow truck driver, who had arrived to help her.

Mr Frazer said road safety is not just about protecting yourself but everyone on our roads.

“It’s about protecting everyone who becomes vulnerable on our roads and highways,” he said.

“So drive as if your loved ones are on the road ahead.”

As part of the week, the Governor General of Australia provided the centre-

piece statement for the launch of Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Week at the Sydney Opera House last Sunday.

To show your support, wear a yellow ribbon or place one on your car.

Yellow ribbons are available by donation at Blue Mountains Council’s customer service counters in Katoomba and Springwood.

You can also become a road safety champion by taking the pledge to drive safely at www.sarahgroup.org/pledge.

Blue Mountains Council has committed to trying to recover $268,149.52 of debt that they accrued during the 2013 bushfires.

At the last Council meeting, Councillors passed a motion unanimously, strongly agreeing that the money that they used during the natural disaster should be reimbursed to them by the State Government.

“Let’s go in hard and get what we are owed,” Councillor Kevin Schreiber said.

Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said he couldn’t agree more.

“The legal framework says that, when an emergency declaration is made, Councils and communities will be supported in being part of the firefighting effort,” Cr Greenhill said.

“The Department of Public Works expressed support for our reimbursement.

Yet the State Government has gone back on this, effectively short changing the rate payers of a community beset by a natural disaster.”

Council accrued a total of $905,202.52 worth of natural disaster relief reimbursements from the October 2013 Winmalee bushfires under the NSW Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRA) scheme.

So far Council has been successful in claiming $637,053 of what they spent during the disaster, they will now continue to liaise with the Department of Public Works to fight for what they believe they are owed.

Greenhill and Doyle ready for battle Blue Mountains Mayor and State Member will go head to head in ‘The Great Debate’ this Friday ERIN MAMO

n celebration of Neighbourhood Centre Week, State Member for the Blue Mountains Trish Doyle and Mayor Mark Greenhill will battle it out in a war of words.

In an event set up by Lower Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and Blaxland High School, ‘The Great Debate’ will see two high school student teams championed

by Cr Greenhill and Ms Doyle take to the stand.

Cr Greenhill said he wants Ms Doyle to know that he twice represented Australia at the World Debating Championships.

“Debating is a craft that I love,” he said.

“It will be a pleasure to come out of retirement for a one-off.”

Ms Doyle said she will be doing some serious preparation for the night.

“Mark Greenhill is a great character,” she said.

“I imagine, from what I know of his past, he will be a fearsome and formidable debating opponent.

“I’m sure the Blaxland High students will teach us both a few things too.”

Manager of the Lower Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Peta Williams, said the

debating event was organised to ensure that the centre continues to have a good relationship with the local schools in the community.

“It’s important to us to get young people involved in the community sector,” she said.

“With Cr Greenhill and Ms Doyle both agreeing to be involved, this is also a great opportunity for the students to work with professionals and to learn from them.”

With the debating topic remaining top secret until just one hour before the event, Ms Williams said it is possible that it will have something to do with the fact that Neighbourhood Centre Week is being celebrated.

“It will be interesting to see how both sides take the subject,” she said.

Blaxland students are expected to speak on behalf of their teams first, with Greenhill and Doyle taking positions as the third and final speakers.

Entry to the event is by gold coin donation and bookings are preferred.

Man charged for carrying knife down main street A 36-year-old Springwood man was detected walking along Macquarie Road, with a knife on Tuesday, April 25.

The male attempted to gain entry into the Oriental Hotel but was refused due to having the knife on display in a sheath on his hip.

Police were called and located the male and conducted a search locating the knife.

He was issued with an infringement notice for ‘custody of a knife in a public place’.

Between Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30, a number of young persons aged between 17 and 19 entered the old Queen Victoria Hospital in Wentworth Falls wanting to take photographs.

The youths from Wollongong were issued with infringement notices for ‘enter enclosed lands’.

The old hospital has been subject to graffiti and trespassers since its closure this past year. There is now signage stating ‘no trespassing’ and a caretaker on the property.

On Friday, April 28, police stopped a vehicle travelling eastbound along the Great Western Highway at Wentworth Falls after it had been sighted travelling at a high speed and wandering all over the road.

The 44-year-old male driver from Bathurst was pulled over by police and a vehicle

search was conducted, locating cannabis and a bat.

The male was charged with ‘cannabis possession’, ‘breach bail’, ‘having custody of an offensive implement in a public place’ and ‘licence expired two years or more’.

The male has now been bailed to appear before Katoomba Local Court on May 29.

Man charged after cannabis detected during RBT Police were conducting a random breath test at Faulconbridge on Tuesday, April 25, when they detected the smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle they had stopped.

The driver tested negative to the breath test but appeared to be affected by an illicit drug.

The vehicle and passengers were searched with cannabis being located in the pants of a 20-year-old male from Blacktown, who then admitted that he had recently smoked the cannabis.

He was charged with ‘cannabis possession’ and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on May 16.

Man charged with low range PCA after Medlow Bath event At around 10.40am on Sunday, April 30, police stopped a number of vehicles leaving an event at the Point Pilcher lookout in Medlow Bath.

The driver of one vehicle, a 39-year-old Katoomba man, tested positive to a roadside breath test and was conveyed to Katoomba Police Station where he registered a low range PCA.

Firies win battle for brand new base Blue Mountains Council finally approves the re-construction of the Lawson Fire Station ERIN MAMO

Last week, Blue Mountains Council approved a long-standing development application (DA) that will see a brand new station built in a new location.

At a recent Council meeting, Councillor Chris Van der Kley said that the approval of this particular DA had been a long-time coming.

“As long as I’ve been on Council we’ve been talking about the possible re-construction of the fire station at Lawson,” he said.

RFS District Manager, David Jones, said the new station is being built mostly to accommodate for the latest tankers that firefighters use.

“As time goes on our vehicles are refined and updated,” he said.

“The latest model, the ‘cat 1’, can’t actually fit into the current fire station.”

The new station at Lawson will also provide the space that the RFS needs to achieve a command point in the midMountains in the event that a major incident occurred.

Volunteer rural firefighters from Lawson will soon be getting a brand new base Mr Jones said he is very happy that the DA has been approved after working towards it for six years.

“This is an important milestone in developing the Lawson brigade,” he said.

“It’s a DA we can work with using a purpose built standard design and adhering to heritage requirements.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to get into the new building by December

this year.”

The new station will be located along the Great Western Highway in Lawson, next to the BP petrol station and the Fire & Rescue NSW Fire Station.

Giving back after times of heartache Blaxland’s Cherish French is giving back to Starlight after they helped her family through tough times raise money.

“The funds raised by Starlight don’t just go to the hospital and the rooms but also towards the sick children and the ‘Make a Wish’ program that grants wishes for terminally ill children.”

Starlight relies solely on donations to deliver fun and happiness to sick children.

Last Friday, the charity appealed to the community through Starlight Day, to raise $1.3 million to go towards helping 33,000 seriously ill children around Australia.

The children’s charity are now continuing to ask individuals, corporations, universities, schools and community groups to get involved in fundraising throughout the month of May or to give their time as a volunteer.

Starlight CEO, Louise Baxter, said the charity is encouraging all Australians to dig deep to help them improve hospitalisation for seriously ill children and their families.

“Starlight’s programs replace pain, fear and stress with fun, joy and laughter and give seriously ill children the opportunity to simply be kids again,” she said.

“Every donation is vital in helping us reach our goal.”

Through Starlight Express Rooms and Captain Starlight, the foundation operates in three NSW hospitals, to bring happiness and laughter to sick children, seven days a week.

Blaxland local, Cherish French, said Starlight Foundation played a huge part in her life as a child.

“My older brother fell very ill when I was young and I basically grew up in the hospital,” she said.

“Starlight Foundation really helped my family and gave my brother and I something to do, and a way to create fun memories in all the bad that was happening.”

Many years later, Ms French now volunteers with Starlight to give back to the charity.

“I’m proud to be a volunteer,” Ms French said.

“I volunteer in the express room at Westmead and I also get involved in events like the Royal Bank of Canada Race for Kids, to

Huge international honour for Valley Heights small business ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains skin care company Paudha Healing has two of the best products in the world, according to the Beauty Shortlist Awards that were held recently.

The Valley Heights company, created

by Renee Tilley, recently won ‘Best Value Day Moisturiser’ and the ‘Editor’s Choice’ awards at the largest, annual beauty and wellness awards in the United Kingdom.

Each year, the global Beauty Shortlist Awards judges spend six months reviewing a number of companies for their awards from major international companies to smaller businesses, aiming to discover and celebrate the most diverse and deserving beauty products on the market.

This year, Mrs Tilley beat out brands from 38 other countries to win awards for two of her products that were made right here in the Blue Mountains.

Mrs Tilley, whose small business turns one this month, said she started Paudha Healing out of a passion for creating affordable skincare products using naturally derived ingredients.

“To be given these awards is really rewarding because it means we have achieved the goal of providing a quality product without the big-ticket price,” she said.

While studying a Bachelor of Health Science, Mrs Tilley said she started experimenting with herbs that she had growing in her own garden.

“We had an abundance of chickweed growing in our garden and I wanted to put it to good use,” she said.

“I started using it to make a cream with calendula for my friends and family, and they couldn’t get enough of it.”

Given the creams’ popularity, Mrs Tilley now has a range of mostly locally sourced and Australian Certified Organic products that are all available online.

ucked away in Blaxland shops could be the town’s biggest and best secret.

Benny’s Family Bistro, at Blaxland Tavern, is a familyfriendly restaurant with some killer burgers, a sumptuous parmigiana, and a kids eat free with one main meal policy.

Head Chef Ben Abbott, who previously worked at the Lapstone Hotel for almost a decade, has worked at the bistro for around five years in between living abroad.

With Ben a father himself, the Blaxland Tavern has become a great place to bring the kids for a meal.

“We’ve just installed a chalkboard for the kids to draw on in the bistro,” Ben said.

“And a PlayStation is coming soon.”

This year, Blaxland Tavern plans to make some big changes to the establishment, renovating the entire space to give it a new look.

In terms of the menu, the bistro certainly doesn’t disappoint.

They are best known for their

burgers like the ‘Heartattack’, which comes with four beef/pork patties, four rashes of bacon, American cheese, mayo, barbecue sauce and liquid cheese drizzled on top. And if your still hungry, you can also eat the fries that it comes with.

If you don’t think you could finish a ‘Heartattack’, the bistro also has the make your own burger option and, if your creation is a success, they will even consider putting it on the menu!

On Friday night there’s ribs and during the week there’s everchanging specials, plus the surf and turf is always hit.

Ben said the bistro isn’t really known in the community yet, but he is hoping that will change.

“We serve good, fresh food that isn’t too expensive,” he said.

“Were hoping the community will come in and have a bite to eat.”

For Mother’s Day, the bistro will also host a special lunch with a menu that includes a Thai beef noodle salad, stuffed chicken breast and a chocolate mud cake.

n the ‘good old days’, small businesses simply sold their products and services, and the customer generally knew little about the company. Background information was usually limited to when the business was established.

But these days, consumers want to know far more about the businesses they are interacting with. With a plethora of choice, most customers prefer to interact with a company that contributes in some way to the world.

For some customers, it is about ethically sourced products, for others, it is the level of altruism that is important.

So what does this mean for your small business? Depending on your customer base, and the size of your business, it could be as simple as sponsoring your local sports team, or getting your staff involved in local community events.

Or it might be on a larger scale, where your business creates a social enterprise to work towards solving a problem (e.g. homelessness, poverty, disability access, and so on).

Above all though, it needs to be authentic. If you contribute to a cause,

just because of the marketing results it might reap, your efforts to appear generous are likely to be viewed as opportunistic. The most successful ‘social ventures’ are those with a personal story attached to them: the plumber who sponsors the ‘walk for cancer’ event because their sister died of cancer; the florist who donates $10 from every sale to an organisation working towards the eradication of human trafficking because they have seen firsthand the devastation it causes; the pet shop who chooses to only sell rescued animals because they have witnessed the condition of dogs in ‘puppy farms’; and so on.

There needs to be purpose to the contribution you want to make. It needs to align with your values, and with the values of your customers, if you want to make a big impact. It involves talking with experts and planning a strategy, rather than jumping on the first bandwagon that comes along. And above all, you need to have commitment and longevity to the need or cause you are seeking to support.

s an advisor I too often meet business owners that are praised by their clients yet lack self-belief.

It is okay being modest, and we don’t want a world of narcissists running around, but you must believe in yourself, and value your work accordingly.

Self-belief It’s a fact – if you don’t believe in yourself, why would anyone else believe in you? You need to display a level of confidence so that your customers feel comfortable dealing with you, and believe you will deliver to their expected level. Regularly review your SWOT Analysis for yourself and your business (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). When you’re doubting and questioning yourself then focus more on your strengths and opportunities, though looking at your soft spots is still of use – if you don’t dwell on these areas.

If you find it hard, consider what values your business exudes and compliments it receives. There is something behind that praise!

Self-worth Hand in hand with self-belief is self-

worth. If we don’t believe in ourselves, we tend to drop our prices well under competitor pricing, and continue to drop them whenever queried. Sometimes we use the excuse we are portfolio building, or testing out a service, and therefore can’t justify a market price. However, if you find yourself continuing to do this, you will not be doing yourself or your industry any favours.

If a customer queries your price, if the automatic reaction is to drop it further, first consider is there justification in dropping that price. Did you articulate the value the customer is getting? This is often missing in the sales or quoting process. Customers must understand the combination of scope, quality and timeframe that contributes to the price. If you need to adjust the price, then one or more of the other factors should change.

For instance, a builder may reduce the quality of a building material to offset a lower price.

Learn to know your real worth and walk away if people won’t pay – they’re not your customers!

I recently received a phone call from my bank. The usual thing, “how was I going with my banking? Am I happy with the service? And could they help me with anything else?”

“Actually, there was something you could help me with,” I said. “Could you give me the current mortgage rates?”. “No problems” was the response, as the sound of a keyboard in the background tapped in the request.

of 5.13 per cent” she announced with a modicum of pride. “Wow, your rate is lower than the comparison rate!” I replied, with tongue planted firmly in cheek – an obvious jocular remark to a well trained bank officer, but apparently not in this instance! “Absolutely”, was her emphatic answer, “it’s much better than the comparison rate in fact?” “By the way”, I

added, by now curious as to her definition, “what exactly is the comparison rate?”.

“The comparison rate is the average of all the other banks rates”, she immediately quipped, and “It allows you to compare loan rates instantly, because we have done all the research for you”. Cue buzzer, and descending trombone note scale, “I’m sorry but that answer is... (pause)... incorrect!”

So what really is the comparison rate, and what purpose does it serve?

The comparison rate is an indicative interest rate designed to identify the “true cost” of a loan. It takes into account most fees and charges that relate to the loan and expresses these costs plus the interest rate, into a single rate – which is called the comparison rate. It allows a potential borrower to see an accurate picture of what they will be paying.

By the way, the closer the comparison rate is to the loan interest rate, the better it is for the borrower.

Remember, when you are shopping around for loans look closely at the comparison rate as this is what you are ultimately going to be paying, and it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with any other lenders rate.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

t’s been 13 years since the Penrith Musical Comedy Company (PMCC) took on the highly-acclaimed musical ‘Chicago’.

This May the show will return to The Joan, bringing together both old and new cast

members.

“There are a couple of cast members whose first show with PMCC was ‘Chicago’ and now they’re back to do it all again,” PMCC President Grant Jones said.

“For example, one of the cell block tango girls is playing the same role that she played last time, but 13 years on she’s bringing a whole new dimension to the character.”

Having a mix of experienced performers and newcomers has had benefits for both groups.

“The ensemble are learning from the more seasoned performers which is great to see,” Grant said.

“It’s also good for the cast members that did ‘Chicago’ last time because there’s new cast members to work with so they’re able to keep some of the original show but bring in a new vibe as well.”

Considering its popularity it’s no surprise that PMCC have decided to once again tackle the hit Broadway show about

infamous murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.

While it takes place in the roaring 20s, Grant says there’s plenty of themes that are still just as relevant to audiences.

“Roxy’s yearning for people to take her photo and wanting to be famous is still relatable today,” he said.

“In today’s day and age we see it through our addiction to social media and Instagram.”

Throughout its almost 40-year history, PMCC has drawn in performers from all across Sydney to take part in more than 60 musicals. One of the things that sets the company apart from other theatre groups is its collaboration with The Joan.

“We work very closely with The Joan and being able to perform in a venue that is a professional venue – it’s an opportunity that not a lot of companies get,” Grant said.

Having such a high-quality performance space in Penrith also has its benefits for local audiences.

“It’s a great night out without having to deal with the city and the road works,” Grant laughed.

“You can come to The Joan and be home before midnight.”

‘Chicago’ will be on at The Joan on Friday, May 12 at 8pm and Saturday, May 13 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $35-$40.

The deceptively-simple concept is an original format in which the duo sit down in the studio with everyday Aussies who have a particularly memorable tale, sometimes elaborate and sometimes simple. As we are listening to the story being told, viewers will see it all come to life in the shape of clever re-enactments. A roll call of actors will see Craig McLachlan, John Wood, Kat Stewart, Richard Davies and Glenn Robbins in guest roles. Busting food safety myths: What can and can’t you do?

From leftovers to reheating, there’s plenty of questions surrounding food safety. So what’s fact and what’s fiction?

When it comes to food safety there’s lots of myths and misinformation.

Considering the effects of food poisoning can be quite severe, it’s important to understand how best to reduce your risk.

One of the most common myths is that hot food should be left out to cool before being placed in the fridge.

The truth is that food should be cooled as quickly as possible to avoid spending too much time in the danger zone – between five degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius. At this temperature bacteria will start to multiply, increasing the risk of food poisoning.

If you have leftovers place them in the fridge as soon as they stop steaming and be sure to store food in small portions as large portions will take longer to cool.

With meats it’s best to slice before storing and for liquid foods use a shallow container of less than 5cm deep.

It’s also important to avoid stacking food containers on top of each other as cool air is required to circulate around the food to help with the cooling process.

When it comes to reheating be sure to

reheat food rapidly to 75 degrees or over i.e. hot not luke warm.

If using a microwave it helps to take the food out half way through and stir it to ensure it’s evenly heated.

Another helpful tip to keep food as safe as possible is the two hour/four hour guide.

Food that has been sitting out for less than two hours should be used immediately or refrigerated.

Between two to four hours it should be used immediately or thrown out, and more than four hours it should chucked.

Another myth you often hear is that frozen food can be left on a bench to defrost.

In reality the safest way to defrost is either in a microwave (cook or reheat immediately if using this method) or in the fridge.

When defrosting remember that raw foods should never be stored above or near cooked foods, so it’s best to store defrosting foods on the bottom shelf.

Lastly, keep in mind that while meats and dairy products tend to be linked to food poisoning, it’s not just animal products that are potentially hazardous.

Prepared salads and fruit packs, cooked rice and pasta, and processed foods containing eggs, beans, nuts and other protein-rich foods like soy products can also pose a risk.

Insulin is a hormone that is released into the bloodstream by the pancreas to collect sugars and take them to the cells for fuel. When we consume certain foods particularly carbohydrates and sugars, they are broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream – this is referred to as blood glucose.

Type 2 Diabetes is a lifestyle related chronic condition where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body becomes resistant to insulin levels and therefore ineffective at managing blood glucose levels. Over a long period of time of trying to lower your blood glucose levels, your pancreas wears out the cells that produce insulin. By the time you are diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes you have on average lost between 50-70 per cent of the cells that produce insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of Diabetes affecting 85-90 per cent of all diabetic cases. Whilst it is more common in older adults, we are seeing more young children and teenagers presenting with type 2 diabetes.

Whilst exercise can not reverse the

damaged cells of the pancreas, it can certainly change the way our muscles respond to insulin, which in turn helps regulate blood glucose. There are many ways you can take control of your glucose; here are five tips to help manage blood glucose control: Exercise Maintaining a regular exercise program increases tissue sensitivity to insulin so your cells are able to use the insulin to uptake the glucose stored in your body.

Check your blood glucose levels daily This is important to keep track of whether your medication is working and to reduce your risk of severe complications related to consistently high blood

glucose levels.

Eat low GI carbohydrates The glycaemic index (GI) measures the effect carbohydrates have on your blood glucose levels. Low GI foods are absorbed slowly by the body resulting in a steady rise of blood glucose.

Eat small portions of good carbohydrates Aim for 15-30 grams of low GI and high fibre carbohydrates per meal or snack.

Blood glucose level targets When testing our blood glucose levels before a meal our range should be between 6.0-8.0mmol/L. When testing two hours after a meal our range should be between 6.0-10.0mmol/L.

reast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is calling on all local sportsmen and sportswomen – no matter what age, sport or level – to be a legend in their community and hold their very own Pink Sports Day event.

This year 48 families will be affected by a breast cancer diagnosis every day in Australia. More than 17,000 Australians will hear the words “you have breast cancer” this year.

Pink Sports Day is a fantastic way for communities to come together and show their support for those in their local community affected by breast cancer.

Events can be big or small – whether it’s a sausage sizzle or cake stall at the local club, holding a raffle competition or wearing pink on game day – the sky is the limit.

Long-time BCNA supporter and Pink Sports Day Ambassador, Shane Crawford, said Pink Sports Day isn’t just about supporting the women who have been diagnosed, it’s also about supporting the husbands, partners, family members and friends who are also on the journey.

“I would love to see all sporting groups pink up for Pink Sports Day this year to

help raise awareness of breast cancer and the work of Breast Cancer Network Australia,” she said.

While many clubs hold an event over Mother’s Day weekend, Pink Sports Day runs for 365 days a year and clubs are welcome to participate on a day that best suits their fixtures.

“Pink Sports Day is a wonderful event that inspires great community participation and spirit while raising awareness and vital funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia,” BCNA CEO, Christine Nolan said.

“We really encourage all sporting clubs to get involved, no matter how big or small that involvement may be.”

In 2016, more than 890 clubs across Australia took part in Pink Sports Day and raised $391,000.

This year BCNA is aiming to raise $550,000 which will help ensure Australians affected by breast cancer receive the very best support, information, treatment and care appropriate for their individual needs.

Pink Sports Day will be held this Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14.

ising local swim star Matt Wilson will travel to Budapest, Hungary, in July to compete in the World Swimming Championships.

The 18-year-old Springwood resident recently discovered he was selected in the Australian Swimming Team, to compete in the 200m breaststroke.

Wilson said representing Australia is always a major highlight.

“I’ve had the honour of representing my country for the past five years now,” Wilson told the Record.

“This team is extra special, after the disappointment of not qualifying for the Olympic team last year by 0.26 seconds.

“I can’t wait to get over there and race.”

While Wilson admits he started his swimming career a little later than most of his competitors, he has certainly made up for the lost time with a slew of wins and new records.

“The most memorable record I’ve broken would have to be the 100m breaststroke on my first Australian junior team,” he said.

In preparation for Budapest, Wilson said he is in the pool nine times a week, and does two gym sessions and pilates on the side.
