alcolm Turnbull was desperate to be Prime Minister.

So desperate in fact that he stabbed a sitting leader in the back to get the top job.

Perhaps we should have known then that listening to the people was not going to be his government’s best asset.

After all, Turnbull created turmoil by getting rid of Tony Abbott despite the public’s disdain for parties dumping leaders mid-term. After years of the Rudd/Gillard war, people were sick of it.

Instead of heed that message, Turnbull pushed ahead, turfed Abbott and showed little regard for public opinion.

We shouldn’t be all that surprised then that Turnbull appears to be blocking his ears when it comes to the public’s view on same sex marriage.

What a shame that Turnbull will end up on the wrong side of history on this issue.

Even if he was to do a remarkable backflip, allow a free vote in the Parliament and ultimately be in charge when the sensible decision to legalise same sex marriage is made, it’s all too late to save his damaged reputation.

For supporters of marriage equality, Turnbull is dead and buried.

For those who don’t support the legalisation of same sex marriage, Turnbull is still dead and buried because he’s allowed the issue to become the major talking point in Australian politics and has fumbled his way through trying to sort it out.

It is not only embarrassing for Turnbull, it is fatal to his leadership.

The fact that Turnbull could ultimately be turfed as leader as a result of same sex marriage is quite incredible.

It can only come down to the utter incompetence of the current Liberal Party and its lack of ability to listen to the people – and it’s lack of backbone.

They say that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is a sign of insanity and trying to push through the plebiscite again was certainly on the verge of madness.

Just plain crazy.

A postal plebiscite? What’s that going to achieve? It can’t be binding nor compulsory which means you might get 30 or 35 per cent of the public voting (if that!). If 51 per cent of that number are in favour of changing our marriage laws, can Turnbull really then say he has a mandate?

This is just an absolute mess.

With the world on edge, fearing Islamic State and terrorism, we’re somehow still debating the same issue we were debating years ago and getting nowhere fast.

At the end of the day, we elect our politicians to make decisions on our behalf, that reflect our beliefs and ideals.

As time goes on, more and more polls suggest that most Australians are in

favour of marriage equality. It is the right thing to do.

You only have to speak to people in the street, in pubs, at the footy or browse through social media to know that public support is with the ‘yes’ campaign.

So why can’t we just get on with it?

What is Malcolm Turnbull so scared of?

Surely it is not alienating the Liberal support base, which are already sick of Turnbull’s handling of this issue.

Turnbull, ego and all, had an incredible opportunity to be part of history by being the Prime Minister when marriage equality was approved in this country.

He had the opportunity to be the Prime Minister who backed love over hate; who backed progression over backwards thinking.

Now he’ll be remembered as the Prime Minister who was in charge when Australia embarrassed itself on the world stage over this issue.

And he’ll be remembered for somehow losing his job over it.

Bill Shorten isn’t totally free of blame either – he’s playing plenty of politics himself. But he is indeed on the verge of being the Prime Minister on the day that the Australian Parliament comes to its senses.

And that is incredible to believe given most believed Shorten had no real hope of ever taking the top job. The seat warmer has become the likely next PM. This whole thing is no longer about marriage equality. It’s about Malcolm Turnbull’s failure as a Prime Minister.

And if marriage equality does somehow get through Parliament when Turnbull is in charge, he’d better not take any of the credit. This is just an absolute farce.

Local man sets up new political party Fed up and frustrated, Winmalee resident Mark Ptolemy has established the Australian Workers Party ERIN MAMO

new political party has been established with one of its founding members hailing from our very own backyard.

Mark Ptolemy, from Winmalee, is one of three individuals who officially registered the Australian Workers Party earlier this year with the Australian Electoral Commission.

As a former Labor supporter, who even ran for the seat of Macquarie in the 2004 Federal Election against Kerry Bartlett, Mr Ptolemy said he started the new party because he was frustrated.

“It got to a point where I didn’t think Labor was sticking to their fundamental beliefs of looking after the underdog and the disadvantaged people in society,” he said.

“The Australian Workers Party is passionate and we want to make sure that vulnerable people are looked after.

“We want social and economic justice and we want people to know that there is another alternative party that actually wants to help.”

At present the new party has almost 3,000 members across the country, with

around 200 of them living in the Blue Mountains.

The party has a strong stance on generating employment and ending discrimination of welfare recipients, free education that all citizens have access to and equal rights for all Australians, whether it is in relation to equal pay for men and women or same sex marriage.

Mr Ptolemy said the Government is run too much like a business these days.

“Privatisation has failed,” he said.

“Look at electricity prices, people can’t even afford to pay their bills.

“In the workplace there’s no security and housing is insane, I don’t know how young people will ever buy a home.”

With the new party now registered, over the next few weeks the executive committee will start to largely promote who they are and what they are about.

“We are looking to reach out to people who hold similar values to our party,” Mr Ptolemy said.

“We are also looking for people who would consider running for candidacy at all levels, if their values align with ours.”

Difference makers Boomerang Bags to sweep through Mountains ERIN MAMO

oomerang Bags are about to be launched in the Blue Mountains.

The idea of the biodegradable bags is that local shops will have stock available to give to their customers in the hope that they will use it for their shopping and then either return it or keep it with the commitment to re-use it in place of a plastic bag.

The driving force behind the Blue Mountains Boomerang Bags group, Trish Adams, said the idea is to get people into the habit of using a cloth bag for their shopping.

“The main thing is to try and get rid of single-use plastic bags,” Ms Adams told the Record.

Ms Adams first discovered Boomerang Bags while on holiday in Queensland where the grassroots movement originated.

To date, the movement has carried overseas far and wide to countries like New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Germany, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Back home in Australia, there are around 285 Boomerang Bag communities across the country.

The Katoomba local said, for her, it’s an individual choice not to use plastic bags and to find another alternative.

“For me it is not a political thing to ban the bag,” she said.

“I don’t care if the Government ever ban the bag, it’s an individual choice and I think it will catch on by itself. You don’t have to punch it down people’s throats.

“This is my contribution to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Blue Mountains Boomerang Bags will now officially launch their bags at the Blue Mountains Food Co-op on Saturday, September 2.

“We will have about 600 bags made by the launch date,” Ms Adams said.

Residents can pick up a bag from the Blue Mountains Food Co-op, Turning Page bookstore, Gallery 118, Katoomba Bargain Books and Arabesque clothing store in Springwood.

Blue Mountains Boomerang Bags are also accepting second-hand fabric that might usually end up in landfill to make bags, as long as it’s clean and light weight.

On Thursday, August 3, at about 9.30pm a 24-year-old man from Leura went to a local supermarket and allegedly assaulted a woman.

The man started talking to the female before he patted her on the buttocks and then proceeded to squeeze her breast area before grabbing her by the wrist.

A short time later when police were notified the man was arrested at a Leura address and taken to Katoomba Police Station where he was charged with, ‘assault with act of indecency’ and ‘common assault’.

Police will allege that the male and female are known to each other.

The female did not sustain any injuries as a result of the incident.

The man was granted strict bail with a condition that he does not enter the supermarket at Leura.

He appeared before Katoomba Local Court yesterday.

Springwood: Teenager busted selling pot at school

At about 10.50am on Friday, August 4, police were called to a high school in the Springwood area where it is alleged that a 17-year-old was caught selling cannabis.

The young person was arrested and charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’.

Police also seized cash that was made from selling the cannabis.

The young person was granted unconditional bail and is due to appear before Parramatta Children’s Court on Wednesday, August 30.

Katoomba: Man steals secondhand watches from Vinnies

About 5.20am on Sunday, August 6, it is alleged that a male wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a light coloured backpack went to the St Vincent de Paul shop on Waratah Street, Katoomba, and repeatedly kicked the front window of the store attempting to break it.

When the male was unsuccessful he picked up a brick and used it to smash the window and then entered the store and stole approximately 15 second-hand watches, before fleeing the scene.

Police are now investigating the matter and are urging anyone with information to contact Katoomba Police Station on 4782 8199.

Hazelbrook: Man accused of assault out on bail

A Hazelbrook man accused of assault and stalking has been granted strict bail.

Andrew Culverston, 34, faced Penrith Local Court via video link and gave two thumbs up when he learned he would be conditionally released.

Despite acknowledging the facts were “extremely serious”, Magistrate Roger Clisdell said their was nothing to suggest he wouldn’t turn up to court.

Culverston’s lawyer formally entered not guilty pleas.

Doing it for Paul this Daffodil Day As she does every year, Glenbrook local Lorna Gradden will help raise funds for the Cancer Council ERIN MAMO

n memory of her late son, Paul, Lorna Gradden will volunteer her time on Daffodil Day later this month, to raise money for cancer research.

Like she has for over a decade, the Glenbrook resident will fundraise at Blaxland Shopping Centre on Friday, August 25.

“I’ve been volunteering as team leader at Blaxland since 2004,” Ms Gradden told the Record.

“This year we will be set up along the highway near the taxi rank and inside the mall, just near the IGA Supermarket, selling daffodils, pins, bears, soccer balls and footballs.”

Over the years the retiree has successfully raised around $35,000 for Cancer Council through the local stalls.

As well as her team leader duties, Ms Gradden hosts a morning tea for the notfor-profit each year and also volunteered at their head office for a number of years.

The 83-year-old said taking part in Daffodil Day each year is important to her because not only does she assist in raising much-needed funds but she also gets the word out about Cancer Council and the work they do.

“My son passed away from secondary stomach cancer in 1995,” she said.

“It was very quick from the time of his diagnosis to his death – it was eight weeks.

“Now I’m inspired to raise money for research that may help other people have the chance that my son didn’t.

“If there were the number of trial treatment programs around when my son died, would it have helped?

“That’s what keeps me coming back.”

In the greater western Sydney and Blue Mountains region alone, it is estimated that approximately 11,085 people will be diagnosed with cancer in a single year.

By supporting Cancer Council through Daffodil Day on Friday, August 25, people can help to beat the awful disease by funding vital research, support services, prevention programs and advocacy campaigns.

As one of the largest national fundraising events in the southern hemisphere, Cancer Council hopes to raise $2.1 million across NSW this year.

Last year, $5.6 million was raised for Daffodil Day across the country.

Historic pro-choice motion passed State Parliament moves motion to support the right of choice for women regarding abortion ERIN MAMO

he NSW Parliament moved a historic motion last week to support the right of choice for women when it comes to abortion.

Greens Member for Newtown, Jenny Leong tabled the motion asking that the NSW lower house support the right for women to make the choice that is right for them, which includes respecting the right to access safe, legal abortion.

State Member for the Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle spoke to the motion reiterating her position.

“For too many years we have been fighting for women’s reproductive rights and autonomy in the public and private sphere,” she said.

“I believe a woman is best placed to decide what is best for her.

“She knows the circumstances around a pregnancy and understands what she needs.

“She is the one who best knows her capacity to parent and her personal circumstances.”

Ms Doyle went on to acknowledge the work of feminists before her, like those

who spearheaded the Women’s Abortion Action Campaign in 1972.

Ms Doyle also touched on the Minister for Women, Tanya Davies and her pro-life stance.

“The Minister for Women’s statement that she is personally pro-life is problematic,” she said.

“It is commonly understood in women’s politics that the pro-life label is shorthand for anti-choice.

“Long ago, fundamentalist Christian organisations generated the label and they are well known for being steadfastly anti-abortion and anti-choice in all circumstances.”

Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jenny Aitchison also spoke to the motion in parliament, stating that women everywhere in NSW have the right to make the decisions that affect their own lives.

The pro-choice motion was passed unanimously through the NSW lower house and Ms Leong is now calling on the Minister for Women to take steps to decriminalise abortion in the state.

Campbell was one of music’s biggest stars in the late 1960s and early 1970s and at one stage was selling more records than The Beatles. He recently appeared in a documentary outlining his battle with the disease, which included one final new song.

Important time to get bushfire ready ERIN MAMO

xperts in all things bushfire related are coming to the region for the annual Bushfire Building Conference and Community Forum next month.

Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise (BMEE) CEO, Bernie Fehon, said the twoday event which will run from Friday, September 8 to Saturday, September 9 is for both local community members and specialists in the industry.

“Many locals have experienced the devastating impacts of a bushfire in the Blue Mountains, so the expo is a great opportunity for the community to increase their knowledge on how to protect their home,” he said.

“If residents are considering extensions or putting on a deck there’s special information they can pick up at the expo to make it easier for them to make the right decision.

“The conference is primarily for specialists in industry, architects, builders, designers and planners to hear from global sustainability experts and building innovators.”

On Friday, the conference will delve into topics like technology and research, vegetation and landscape, product compliance and installation.

A Bushfire Building Conference and Community Forum will be held next month

expert Joost Bakker will headline the event.

Mr Bakker designed and built a fireresistant house out of straw that can withstand a CSIRO fire test in temperatures over 1000ºC. Associate Professor Geoffrey Cary will also take the stage at the conference.

Mr Cary has published numerous research papers on bushfires and specialises in teaching bushfire dynamics and management.

On Saturday, a large expo will feature leading local businesses and BMEE are promising that the event will be bigger than ever.

The local Rural Fire Service and Blue Mountains City Council as well as bushfire protection services will each have a stall at the expo.

The community forum, which is also on Saturday, will then allow locals to hear from bushfire experts who will share tips and advice through an interactive program and presentations.

This year an Experts Lounge will be set-up to allow the public to meet with the experts and get their specific questions answered.

Tickets to the conference on Friday are $205 while entry to the expo and forum are free.

Unis set to lose vital funding greater west.

In answering questions before a recent Senate hearing, the university said that for a region with above average unemployment and a substantial skills deficit, the impact will be devastating. Taking resources away from the only university based in Greater Western Sydney will have a significant negative impact on job creation and the skills gap in the west.

It will widen the gap that exists for education and ultimately income between those in the eastern part of our city and those in the west.

And it isn’t just WSU being hit. Many Mountains students go to Sydney University, UNSW, UTS and Macquarie, and all of those unis will face cuts totalling $165 million. Collectively, universities will lose $1.16 billion in base funding over the next four years.

Well resourced, effective higher education is crucial for the education of current and future generations, for the contributions made to research and new discoveries, and for providing skilled people for our demanding labour market. In no one’s book of fairness should WSU face the second biggest hit in the country, and nor should the goal of completing a university degree be made harder than it already is.

Western Sydney University (WSU) has been flagged as NSW’s ‘biggest loser’ as a result of the Turnbull Government’s proposed changes to higher education funding, losing $54.1 million over the next four years.

For the more than 1000 Blue Mountains students currently attending WSU, the cuts mean they will face higher fees, an increase in class sizes, and cut backs in programs offered.

WSU caters to a wide range of students, and a significant number from low SES backgrounds. It’s also a uni where nearly 62 per cent of their students are the first in their family to attend university. The measures the Turnbull Government is recommending would undermine the university’s ability to support these students by putting at risk things like free e-textbook access for first years.

The impact of the cuts goes beyond the individual students and their families.

The cuts will affect the university’s capacity to skill and re-skill people for the jobs the future will demand.

From its willingness to develop courses like “leadership and entrepreneurship” and “social media analytics” through to robotics and automated manufacturing, the university has a statutory obligation to support economic development in the

New members are being encouraged to join the Blue Mountains Lantern Club.

Established in 1969, the Blue Mountains Lantern Club was established as a volunteer fundraising arm for the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC).

Throughout the year, the group holds several events with street stalls, guest speakers, open gardens and bus trips.

There are 18 Lantern Clubs throughout New South Wales with a combined membership of over 750.

The Blue Mountains club has raised more than $700,000 during its long existence.

Meetings are held at 10am on the third Thursday of each month at Springwood Court in Springwood.

The club is also holding a fundraising lunch in East Blaxland on August 22.

Re your article ‘Doyle pushes for locally built trains’ (Record August 8). You report Trish Doyle as saying “The new trains are being built to a design which is currently incompatible with tracks, tunnels and platforms on the Blue Mountains line west of Springwood”. You might like to ask her why the last intercity trains to be purchased by the NSW Government, the Oscars, have the same problem. These trains were ordered in 2003 by the then ALP Government led by Premier Bob Carr.

If these trains were capable of travelling up the Mountains we would not be having to put up with packed four car trains during the day. As she does not seem to be able to recall what occurred when the ALP was in power, you might point out to her that the Oscars were based on the Millennium trains that were built in NSW and purchased by the ALP. These trains were an absolute disaster, being delivered years late due to bad design. In fact at one time they had to be withdrawn from service until the problems were sorted out. Given these facts, the current government has made a sensible decision to buy trains that are of a proven design. They are also going to fix the problems with the Blue Mountains line so that all intercity trains will be able to go to Lithgow. Even those purchased by the ALP. I ask you to advise her as she refuses to communicate with anyone who does not share her

opinions. She obviously does not seem to realise that she is supposed to represent all Blue Mountains constituents, not just those of her political persuasion.

hen you first started your business, you most likely gave some thought to your branding. This may have been at a rudimentary level, or a full blown branding process. Either way, you are probably aware that your brand is the face and voice of your business. It is what customers think of when they hear or see your company’s name.

Over time, it is highly probable that you will need to rebrand to some degree. The following are some common reasons: Your mission or vision has changed If you find that your goals have shifted or you are offering a different product or service, you may need to adjust your brand so that it is a more accurate reflection. This reduces any confusion your customers may experience trying to connect with your marketing messages.

The needs of your customers have changed While your original focus may have been the perfect solution for your customers, sometimes your customers’ requirements or desires may have

shifted. Aside from shifting your focus to better meet their needs, your brand will also need to be tweaked or overhauled to ensure that you still attract (and retain) them to your business.

You need to stand out Your business may be one of many similar offerings, or have a similar name to another company.

It is imperative that your customers can easily find you and that there is no confusion. You may need to make a major change, such as changing your name, to ensure that you continue to attract your ideal customer.

Or you may simply need to refresh your branding collateral to present a more relevant and coherent message to potential customers.

While branding in general may just seem like an exercise in pretty design and a bit pointless, it is anything but.

Branding is more than your logo or your corporate colours.

It is more than your business name and marketing materials.

It is a combination of all that and much more.

rofit gets talked about by small business owners, but often incorrectly!

Being over a month past financial year end, ideally business owners should have a good idea of their profit for the year, but for small business that is regularly not the case! How can we fix this?

Separate bank accounts As a company or trust you must maintain a separate bank account, but for a sole trader it is optional as you are the legal entity. Best practice is to maintain separate accounts, because it makes your accounting easier. No more going through all your accounts to find your transactions. If your banking is primarily electronic/EFTPOS, many banks offer base fee free accounts, so there is no excuse!

Bookkeeping and administration The key is to keep up with your administration and bookkeeping. How often depends on the transactional volume – this may mean daily, weekly or monthly reconciliations. Regardless, do not leave longer – our memories fade the longer we leave it, especially when

the name means nothing to you! Catch up on the backlog and keep up this year.

With regards to system, if your volumes are small, spreadsheets are fine, but for higher volume specialist systems are best. Remember systems alone don’t fix poor bookkeeping, people do!

All expenses Make sure all expenses you can legally claim for are being deducted.

For instance, don’t claim laundry if you don’t have a uniform, unless you must undertake washing for your business.

Do claim part of your home Internet and electricity costs if you work from home.

Log your car travel and claim for valid business trips – it’s amazing how quickly this adds up!

Your labour This is often forgotten when calculating profit. Your time should be covered in the price charged.

Real profit In simple terms, this happens when your income less all valid deductible expenses and your labour cost are removed. The balance is your real profit on which you are then taxed.

Strangely, this year has been quite the slow year, for any corporate scandal watchers. I know, Fuji Xerox Australia’s recent inappropriate accounting practices did result in a few senior executive and Board resignations. But really, overstating photo copy leases to improve revenue figures, surely they can do better than that.

Things did start to pick up a bit with the ‘Great Egg Substitution’ scandal over in Western Australia. It seems an egg producer there decided that merely putting the words ‘free range’ on their

No need to actually produce eggs via the free range process. Just sell battery hen eggs, because no one can actually tell the difference! I think the chickens certainly knew the difference.

But just when we thought that was it, the good old CBA stepped up to the plate.

You really have to admire these guys for their ability

to create some of the truly great scandals. If you recall it was them that established the ‘gold standard’ of fiascos with their role in the Storm Financial debacle.

But they soon topped that with their very own ‘Financial Planning’ scandal?

And as always, expertly explained away as just a “few loose cannons”. Ah, corporate understatement personified!

And of course there was the Comminsure debacle, where genuine insurance claims were refused as a result of incompetent medical definitions. For this one, the bank’s internal investigation reported the cause as just “individual’s actions” rather than any systemic failure.

Goodness, those damn bad apples were at it again!

And now we have the ‘Intelligent Deposit Machine’ scandal. This one has got the lot; money laundering, drug deals and criminal involvement. Wow, those crazy, zany bankers have really surpassed themselves this time.

But thankfully it’s not nearly as bad as it looks. According to them, 53,506 separate breaches of the Anti Money Laundering Act should only really be counted as just one transgression. And we continue to be told that we don’t need a Royal Commission.

ou’d be hard pressed to find an Aussie who doesn’t know Daryl Braithwaite’s hit ‘The Horses’.

But what many of those voices that sing along enthusiastically to the classic track probably don’t realise is that it’s not an original.

In April this year Daryl took to the stage with the song’s writer, Grammy Award winning artist Rickie Lee Jones, to perform the iconic track together for the first time.

“It was exciting and it was nerve-racking to say the least,” Daryl said.

“I really didn’t know if her audience were going to accept me, but they were very accommodating.

“Not only that but it was just amazing being able to talk to Rickie Lee and get her feelings about the song.”

‘The Horses’ has experienced a certain resurgence in recent years – no doubt boosted by music streaming services which give younger audiences access to a huge catalogue of past hits.

This ebb and flow in popularity is something Daryl has experienced since releasing the track in 1991 – more than a quarter of a century ago.

“When it first came out it was definitely

a grower before it finally became successful in the charts,” he said.

“It didn’t seem to have the effect it’s had for the last decade, in the last 10 years it’s gradually grown into something again.

“I don’t know why, I’m flabbergasted as to whether it’s the melody, the musical aspects of it, the lyrical content or just all those things put together.”

Along with ‘The Horses’ Daryl is also known for hits including ‘One Summer’ and ‘As the Days Go By’ and for his work as the lead vocalist of the Aussie 70s rock band Sherbet.

More recently Daryl has lent his voice to the track ‘Up on the Roof’ on the tribute album ‘Beautiful – A Tribute to Carole King’, and is currently in talks to do a duet with fellow rocker James Reyne.

Daryl attributes his success and longevity in the industry to one particular song off his 1987 album ‘Edge’.

“The first single off that was ‘As the Days Go By’, if that hadn’t had been successful, if it hadn’t have worked, then we probably wouldn’t be talking right now,” he said.

“I’ve been thinking about it over the last couple of days and I thought ‘god it’s nearly been 50 years’.”

Despite his long career, Daryl is showing no signs of slowing down and retirement isn’t even part of his thought process.

“We’re just about to start touring again and we go through till April,” he said.

“Sometimes I look at it in amazement

that we have so much work available and there’s audiences there that still like what I do.”

He is a happy boy that knows how to sit, wait and roll so someone has put in the time training this boy. He is an energetic dog that would love a walk every day and then couch time of a night!

This poor girl is very deserving of a loving Forever Home. After being found in the Penrith area she was bought to the shelter as a stray. She wasn’t microchipped, she has had puppies and was very skinny.

At 6 years of age she has many years left to give a loving family. She is a little shy in the shelter enviroment but also very sweet when you spend time with her. If you are able to offer this girl a home please contact the shelter.

Charlie has been surrendered to the shelter as his owner has gone into a nursing home and there is no one in the family that can take him. Charlie is a bouncy, happy and very friendly boy. He runs a mile a minute and is oh so happy to eat treats!

The lowdown on iron: What it does and why you need it Iron is crucial to our health, but how much do we really know about it, and are we getting enough of it?

By now most of us are familiar with iron, but other than the fact that it can be found in meat how much do we really understand about this important mineral?

This week I thought I’d provide an overview of what it does, how much we need, and where to get it.

Iron’s job is to help transport oxygen around the body. Without enough iron deficiency occurs, which can lead to symptoms including fatigue and lack of concentration.

As with any nutrient certain groups are at higher risk of iron deficiency including young children, women of reproductive age, pregnant women, vegetarians and vegans.

When it comes to how much iron we need each day women require more iron than men due to blood loss during menstruation.

Women aged 19 and over require 18mg of iron per day (this number decreases to 8mg over the age of 50), while men aged 19 and over require 8mg of iron per day.

So now you know how much you need

to aim for let’s take a look at the best food sources of iron.

Though there is a myth that you need animal foods for iron the truth is it can be obtained through either animal or plant sources.

Red meat, tinned tuna, salmon, chicken and other meats are all sources of a type of iron known as haem iron.

Plant sources – including tofu, nuts, beans and lentils, green leafy vegetables, and wholegrain breads and cereals – contain what is known as non-haem iron.

Haem iron is better absorbed than nonhaem iron, but this doesn’t mean you have to eat meat.

For those that don’t consume animal

products it helps to consume plant-based iron sources with foods that are high in vitamin C, think citrus fruits or red capsicum, as this helps to aid iron absorption.

On the other hand calcium tends to inhibit absorption, so try to avoid consuming calcium rich foods with iron rich foods i.e. have a glass of milk between meals instead of with meals.

If you think you may not be getting the iron your body needs it’s important to speak to your GP who can assess your iron levels through a simple blood test.

Supplementation is an option for those low in iron but this should only be undertaken after consultation with your GP or dietitian as excess iron can cause harm.

And what did Tim do with his mid-life crisis? Rather than buying a red sports car, he planted vineyards of pinot gris and tempranillo. And not small vineyards either. he Panthers have roared into top four contention with their sixth straight win, defeating the North Queensland Cowboys 24-16 at Pepper Stadium on Saturday night.

The Panthers came from behind to overpower the Cowboys with Nathan Cleary leading the way with another dominant display.

Penrith coach Anthony Griffin praised the Cowboys, who showed tremendous fight despite a mounting injury toll.

“We really had to earn it but down 16-6 it could have gone either way,” Griffin said.

“But once it got to 16-6 we played our best footy and showed our hunger for the game.”

With his side now in sixth place on the NRL ladder, Griffin will be looking for more improvement from his troops when they take on a fast finishing Canberra in the nation’s capital on Sunday afternoon.

“We haven’t been looking at the ladder all year. We just need to look at next week against the Raiders and if we keep winning, the ladder takes care of itself,” he said.

Griffin will name his side to take on the Raiders later this afternoon. The game will be played at Canberra Stadium at 2pm Sunday.
