he local team behind the award-winning new Australian film ‘Broke’ is set to announce a second film that will be shot in locations in the Blue Mountains.

Director, Heath Davis, will host an event at Scenic World in Katoomba this Saturday, August 6, to introduce his latest venture, ‘Book Week’. “‘Book Week’ is a comedy/drama about reading and writing which will be produced and shot entirely in the Blue Mountains,” Mr Davis said.

“Our hope with this film is to encourage adults and kids to switch off their iPhones and pick up a book or pen again.

“We really want to drive people back into reading and using their imaginations.”

Saturday’s event is open to the public and will include live music, food and drinks, a special screening of ‘Broke’, Q & A with cast and crew of both films and the opportunity for locals to hear about upcoming plans for ‘Book Week’.

Producer James Nightingale said he is hoping that local businesses, residents and creative geniuses from the area can get involved and be part of the journey too.

“Filmmaking is all about collaboration and we are really adamant about including the townsfolk,” Mr Nightingale said.

‘Book Week’ will be a crowd funded film, which will rely on funding from the local community and businesses. Filming is set to begin in March and locations that can be confirmed include The Carrington Hotel and Station Bar in Katoomba.

The event kicks off at 6pm this Saturday, August 6 and tickets are $20.

Italy calls for talented local artist Huge opportunity for Glenbrook-based artist to showcase her talents internationally ERIN MAMO

osaic artist Marian Shapiro will travel from her home in Glenbrook this month all the way to Sardinia in Italy to work with world renowned artist Guilio Menossi.

Ms Shapiro has been chosen as one of just 10 international artists to work on a large wall hanging mosaic piece with the Italian artist, which will then be on display at a public exhibition.

From August 10 to 21, Ms Shapiro will meet up with artists from Argentina, Canada, Israel, Brazil, USA and Mexico.

Ms Shapiro is the only artist attending from Australia.

The Blue Mountains local has been a mosaic artist for 13 years and is very excited about the opportunity she has been given.

“I’m extremely honoured and humbled by this opportunity to work with Guilio Menossi,” Ms Shapiro said.

Ms Shapiro makes original art and architectural mosaic for private and public spaces.

She also teaches mosaics at her studio in Glenbrook and is the Editor of the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Over the years, Ms Shapiro has won many awards in Australia and internationally and has studied mosaics all over the world.

As a contemporary artist she loves the nature and texture of the materials she uses for her pieces.

“I’m often inspired by the materials I use and by the contrasts that I can achieve by mixing different textures in the same piece,” she said.

“The roughness of marble against the smoothness of glass.

“I am fascinated by the creative tension of using ancient techniques and traditional materials to make modern art, I also love the way colour itself can lend movement and dimension to a piece of artwork. ” For the piece Ms Shapiro will work on with Mr Menossi, she plans to use lots of reds, blacks and neutral tones.

The theme is the mother of goddess of Sardinia, who represents fertility.

The finished piece will be on display in a former monastery for a two day exhibition.

After that it will be donated to the local town of Ploaghe in Sardinia.

illian Skinner should resign from her post as the Health Minister in New South Wales.

It is time for fresh eyes to look at the state of the health system and get our hospitals back on track.

Mrs Skinner’s handling of the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital debacle that has left one baby dead and another with severe disabilities has been woeful to say the least and should be the final straw for Premier Mike Baird to step in and take action.

Mrs Skinner says a full investigation will take place into how the two babies were incorrectly administered with nitrous oxide instead of oxygen at the hospital.

If I was the Health Minister and such an indefensive disaster had happened on my watch, I’d be on the doorstep of Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital demanding to know how it happened.

I’d be wanting to be shown first hand how, why and where the situation took place in an attempt to get an understanding of how such an immense failure could possibly happen.

I certainly wouldn’t be relying on a report, potentially a butt-covering exercise, to explain what occurred.

A report should be secondary to personal intervention by the Minister to understand how and why it happened.

According to the 2UE Breakfast show last Tuesday morning, NSW Health actually tried its best to “shut down” the story when Macquarie Radio started revealing details on Monday afternoon.

Mrs Skinner herself confirmed she knew of the situation last Thursday but didn’t publicly reveal the deadly mix-up until Monday night.

As the story was taking hold on Monday night and as a major scandal erupted, Mrs Skinner attended the glitzy Helpmann Awards at The Star.

Based on the facts presented so far it seems that only good luck has prevented more babies from dying or being left disabled at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.

If Mrs Skinner was still in Opposition, she would have demanded the Health Minister’s immediate resignation.

The incidents at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital come after revelations of another scandal at St Vincent’s Hospital, where dozens of patients were given incorrect chemotherapy dosages from 2012.

And they come as our hospitals remain under intense pressure.

The State Opposition last week revealed that one quarter of the 74,000 patients awaiting elective surgery in New South Wales are in greater western Sydney.

Nepean Hospital has the worst waiting list in the state.

When Mrs Skinner was the Opposition Health Minister, she said the Labor Government was “incompetent” because the wait list at Nepean had grown to 3,327 in June 2010.

It now stands at 3092 – only a minor change after more than five years of Liberal Government.

Back in 2008, the wait list at Nepean Hospital sat at 2030 patients.

What does that tell you about how successive governments have handled population growth in this part of Sydney as far as health infrastructure is concerned?

Jillian Skinner was a superb Opposition spokesperson for Health and as the state lurched from debacle to debacle, she was front and centre demanding it be fixed.

In 2011 she was given that chance.

Five years later, the state of our health system remains a major concern and as the Federal Election results in western Sydney showed, an issue of monumental importance to local people.

If Jillian Skinner was in charge of a private company the Board would have given her a gold watch and sent her on her way.

Being the Health Minister in NSW is one of the toughest gigs in politics.

It is never going to be easy, and there will always be scandals to navigate.

But there are now serious questions about the way this government has handled the portfolio since coming to power in 2011. It’s time we thanked Mrs Skinner for her enormous contribution to the health portfolio for many years, and took a different and fresh approach.

Success for Blue Mountains at major tourism awards ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains restaurants and resorts shone bright at the recent 2016 Tourism Accommodation Australia Awards.

As one of the only two hatted restaurants in the Blue Mountains, Darley’s Restaurant at Lilianfels Resort & Spa, Katoomba, took out Best Regional Restaurant for the second year in a row.

The Hydro Majestic Hotel also had great success on the night winning two awards, one for regional Chef of the Year, which went to head chef Mate Herceg, who oversees four dining venues.

“Delivering quality food experiences over four venues, all with their own different menus, can be tricky but I have great teams of kitchen and restaurant staff who help make sure everything is perfect,” said Mr Herceg.

Both Darley’s and the Hydro have a strong focus on featuring local and regional produce at their venues which they believe helped set them apart from competitors.

lue Mountains residents will continue to see improved waste management services across the region with the completion of a major upgrade of the Blaxland Waste Management Facility.

The improved waste facility features a new recycling and reuse shed and resource recovery centre which aims to reduce landfill by providing a sorting area for recyclable items, including mattresses, textile and e-waste.

“The upgrade of the Blaxland Waste Management Facility is a significant investment in providing a modern, convenient facility that will ensure the Council and the community can continue to reduce waste to landfill and increase recycling,” said Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill.

“Lower Mountains residents and customers now have a simple, clean method of sorting recyclable items from waste, similar to the resource recovery centre currently offered at Katoomba.”

The entrance to the waste facility has also been improved and includes a new weighbridge, improved traffic flow, sealed roadways, a heavy vehicle turning circle, an all-weather awning and acces-

An extension of the landfill lining provides critical environmental protection and management of the liquid draining from the waste material into the landfill.

The extensive upgrade follows the introduction of Council’s new waste service on July 4, which is already showing early signs of success in reducing waste to landfill with garden vegetation being recycled for the first time.

Talking to a loved one or friend about a gambling problem has become less awkward thanks to an innovative new animated e-card initiative developed by the NSW Government.

The Talkward program provides free e-cards aimed at breaking the ice and initiating a conversation with someone facing a gambling problem.

The e-cards, which can be customised and personalised, humorously focus on a thorny subject but carry a serious message: now we’ve got the awkward bit out of the way, let’s have a talk in real life.

Director of Stakeholder Engagement at Liquor & Gaming NSW, Natalie Wright, said the Talkward program recognises the key role family and friends play in encouraging problem gamblers to take the vital first steps towards recovery.

“One of the biggest challenges can be raising the issue of problem gambling. It can be a very awkward thing to do. People are often afraid that mentioning someone’s gambling problem may damage their relationship with that person,” Ms Wright said.

The Talkward initiative has grown in popularity since its launch in May as part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week 2016, with almost 700 e-cards created and sent.

Take an historic ride back in time Opportunity for locals to explore Capertee and its amazing landscape and history ERIN MAMO

his month, the small town of Capertee, north of Lithgow will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their community hall with a scenic train ride starting in Lithgow.

On Sunday, August 21, a historic motor rail train will depart Lithgow Train Station at 9am and travel one hour to Capertee passing through the Gardens of Stone National Park with views of sandstone cliffs and canyons along the way.

The track that the train will travel along is usually only open to long distance freight trains.

Secretary of Capertree Progress, Dorothy Pike said this is a rare opportunity for tourists and locals alike to experience landscape that is not always reachable to the public.

“This day trip will give people a taste of this awesome and dramatic landscape that we are lucky enough to be surrounded by,” Ms Pike said.

“The area isn’t too well known, but is a breathtaking part of the world with 236 species of birds and 10 per cent of Australia’s biodiversity.”

Capertee Hall hosts many of the town’s local events including birthdays, weddings, funerals and even the recent election polls, but after 60 years of service it needs some repairs to help preserve its history.

“The roof is leaking pretty badly,” said Ms Pike.

“Every time it rains, it’s a bit of a concern, the water comes straight in.”

If a household cannot participate online, there will be directions in the letter on how to order a paper form.

In some locations, households will receive a paper form upfront, with the option to complete it online.

The information gathered by the survey helps estimate Australia’s population.

This information is then used to distribute government funds and plan services for the local community, such as housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals and the environment.

Census data is also used by organisations to make informed decisions on policy and planning issues that impact the lives of all Australians.

Census data from 2011 shows that there was a total of 75,942 Blue Mountains residents and of these 48.3 per cent were male and 51.7 per cent were female.

The data also showed that there were 37,458 people who reported being in the workforce in the Blue Mountains and of these 56.2 per cent were employed full time, 33.3 per cent were employed parttime and 4.9 per cent were unemployed.

The Census of Population and Housing is the nation’s largest statistical collection which provides a snapshot of Australia and how it has changed over time.

The aim of the Census is to accurately collect data on the key characteristics of people in Australia on Census night and the dwellings in which they live.

This year’s survey will be Australia’s first predominantly digital Census.

NSW Census Director, Liz Bolzan, said this Census will be the easiest and most accessible ever.

“Whether you want to complete the Census on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or just with a pen and paper, we’ve put the systems in place to make the process as quick and easy as possible,” Ms Bolzan said.

“By pausing for just 30 minutes once every five years, you are being included in the Census, which informs some of the biggest decisions of your future, many of which will be funded by your tax dollars.”

Opportunity for youth to get creative Council calls for young adults to help design new logo ERIN MAMO

alling all young creative Blue Mountains residents!

Blue Mountains City Council, in partnership with the Blue Mountains Youth Council are looking for creative young adults to design a logo for an initiative called Project NOW. Project NOW is a new three-day youth congress which is organised by young adults aged between 12 to 24.

The focus of the event is to engage with other young adults in the community to discuss environmental and social issues.

Participants are encouraged to advocate for their community by developing ideas for projects that could receive further support and a share of the $6,000 grant funding which is available.

Most of the participants are still in school and have taken this opportunity on board as a way of making a difference in their local community.

Mayor Mark Greenhill believes Project NOW is a positive initiative which will develop and strengthen young people’s leadership skills, and improve community connections.

“Together with the Blue Mountains Youth Council, I invite you to submit a logo design for Project NOW that repre-

Double win for Council at Awards Blue Mountains City Council has won two Stormwater NSW Awards for Excellence for integrated stormwater design and stormwater research and innovation.

A partnership between Council and the Leura Falls Creek Catchment Working Group, the award winning Leura Falls catchment improvement project treats 11 key nodes in the catchment.

The stormwater devices were designed to be functional and sympathetic to the local environment.

The high level treatment of stormwater runoff effectively removes litter, sediments and nutrients.

The whole-of-system approach to stormwater and catchment management features the use of soft engineering techniques and adapting solutions to suit the specific site. This project is now a model for other areas because it is a sustainable and cost effective way of restoring creeklines.

The second award, received for excellence in research and innovation, was presented to Council, with partners, Water NSW, Wollondilly Council, and Melbourne University.

The Stormwater Pollution Investigation pilot project highlights the innovative use of new technologies applied to water pollution problems.

The new sampling techniques eliminate the hit or miss nature of traditional stormwater water quality sampling and offer Water NSW a new approach to dealing with pollution offences.

Continuing on from last week’s column, this week we examine a wonderful old chestnut, a staple of investment spruikers and a notion deeply embedded into the psyche of the Australian investor – ‘you can’t lose money investing in property’. This concept seems so ingrained and sacrosanct that I am surprised Watson and Crick didn’t include a ‘strand’ named “property investment” into their double helix.

I will be referring only to investment properties, not for owner/occupied.

The majority of investors borrow money to purchase their property, so let’s start with this aspect. The term often bandied around is to ‘negative gear’ – a literal translation is to ‘borrow money for the purpose of making a loss’. No doubt the only investment strategy

that actually commences with the intention of losing money! Hang on you are saying, the bank wouldn’t approve a loan if they thought it was a bad deal!

That’s certainly correct; they don’t want to make a loss, that’s why they take security over the investment property and your home, in the majority of cases. They give themselves two properties to protect them from loss – do you see what they are telling you?

But I get a tax deduction for my losses. Absolutely correct; the average tax rate is about 31 per cent which means you will be refunded 31 cents for each dollar you lose on the transaction. This is offset against income remember, so if you run out of income tax paid, there are no further deductions. You do the math, as our American friends would say!

Remember, all the expenditure that has not been covered by a taxation refund needs to be recouped through capital gains before a profit can be declared. And we haven’t even touched on the costs of upkeep and repair.

All of the above is going to eat potential profit, not to mention purchasing at the wrong time in the cycle or in the wrong region.

ver the last couple of years I’ve been lucky enough to speak to some of the biggest names in the Australian country music industry.

One thing I’ve noticed about the genre, aside from the fact it’s made up of a genuinely nice bunch of people, is the unwavering friendship and camaraderie between performers.

This support, and the dedication of fans, is likely a big part of the reason why a decades-long career is so achievable for artists like Beccy Cole.

“I think the capacity for longevity in this particular genre of music is probably something that I feel is the saving grace as far as my ability to keep going and not be a spring chicken,” Beccy explained.

“I think it’s what you make of it and the work you’re prepared to do but I certainly find the loyalty of the fan base makes it possible for people to still invest in my talent.

“Record companies and agencies still want to touch me because the audience still wants to buy tickets so I’m very blessed in that sense.

“I don’t want to slow down, I love the opportunities.”

And those opportunities sure aren’t going to waste for the singer-songwriter,

who last year released a new album titled ‘Sweet Rebecca’ and a tell all autobiography Poster Girl.

This year Beccy has been focused on touring with all-female band The Sisters of Twang, which is made up of fellow performers that Beccy has met over the last 20 years.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for a bit of girl power and it’s good fun to be making music together,” Beccy said of the band.

“Over the years I’ve toured with many different bands and wonderful musicians but it’s pretty much a bloke’s world.

“It’s not any particular feminist statement I’m making, I’m just going why not put the girls together because each one of them has a story about being a little bit overlooked because they’re not a guy.”

Beccy is also hoping that The Sisters of Twang may help inspire the next generation of country music artists.

“We have a lot of kids that come along to the show and I love that there might be a little girl looking up at the band going ‘oh, maybe I could be a drummer’,” she said.

Along with The Sisters of Twang Beccy is joined on tour by her partner and fellow country music artist Libby O’Donovan.

“To get to be on stage together is wonderful, I get very proud every night,” Beccy said.

“My favourite thing while I’m getting ready back stage is hearing her warming up the crowd and entertaining them.

“It’s a wonderful working partnership.”

Ê Huge news for fans of ‘Making a Murderer’ with Netflix announcing new episodes are in the works. The next chapter will delve back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery and his co-defendant Brendan Dassey. The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and

Dassey’s legal team, as well as intimate access to the families and people close to the case. ‘Making a Murderer’ was a smash hit when released on the streaming service last year, so it’s a no-brainer that more episodes are on their way.

Ê Netflix has scored the international rights to ‘Star Trek’. Each episode of the new series will be available within 24 hours of its US premiere. Production begins in Toronto this September for a January 2017 premiere. It’ll be rebooted with a new ship, characters and missions.

Fox goes for gold in Rio ERIN MAMO

ustralian kayaker Jessica Fox arrived in Rio last week ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

At 22, the French-born athlete has secured a spot as a single K1 canoe slalom racer at the Games.

The Record spoke with Fox’s manager, Graham Chapman shortly after the athlete touched down in Rio. “Jess is doing well,” Mr Chapman said.

“She is a wonderfully focused and disciplined human being and getting to a second Olympic Games is a testament to this.”

Fox surprised the world at the London 2012 Olympics when she took home a silver medal at just 18-years-old.

Now she is ranked number one in the world for K1 and is hoping to take home another medal in Rio. Fox grew up by the river as a kid. Living in Leonay, she was originally a swimmer and

Both her parents were Olympians, competing in K1 events.

At the 1992 Barcelona games her father Richard finished in fourth place.

A few years later at the 1996 Atlanta Games her mother Myriam took out the bronze medal for K1.

Fox’s mum is now her trainer.

Mr Chapman said whether Fox takes home a win or not in Rio will all come down to the conditions on the day.

“Jess’ approach to the Games has been to get as prepared for the little things as she can, but it really comes down to the day,” he said.

“Approaching every rapid correctly and not touching one single gate as she passes through them will be very important.”

Mr Chapman said any of the 15 athletes in the race could take out the win.

A number of athletes who were born in the Blue Mountains or still live in the area will be in

Rio for the Games, which begin this weekend.

The Olympics will be broadcast on the Seven Network in Australia.

The Opening Ceremony will be broadcast this Saturday morning.
