THE NEED FOR SPEED Blaxland man Ben Felten will become the first blind person in the world to compete at a motorsport event next year when he challenges the world record for the fastest motorcycle speed ridden while blindfolded. More than five years in the making, the local daredevil will attempt to beat the Guinness World Record of 265.33km/h set by UK man Billy Baxter when he competes on a salt lake in outback South Australia during Speed Week 2017.

Station upgrade to begin next month Construction on Leura Train Station to add lift and accessible ramp plus “Kiss and Ride” area imminent ERIN MAMO

ocals will be happy to hear that construction work is set to start on the Leura Train Station upgrade in January 2017.

Transport for NSW announced recently that the detailed design for the upgrade of the station is progressing well and works should be able to start in the new year.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said Leura is a unique location and they have taken this into consideration to ensure the design for the upgrade maintains the heritage look and feel that characterises the Mountains village.

“The detailed design has been developed by architects with experience working with heritage buildings and areas, while the community feedback has helped to guide the design,” the spokesperson said.

The upgrade of Leura Station will include a lift and accessible ramp which will make it easier for less mobile commuters, including those with a disability, parents with prams and travellers with luggage.

The upgrade will also include the relocation of the new ‘Kiss and Ride’ area to the front of the taxi rank on Railway Parade, and an accessible path from this area to

The awnings around the station will reflect the heritage verandahs around Leura Mall and the canopies have been designed to provide protection from the elements while allowing in as much natural light as possible.

New facilities will also include bicycle racks and signage, and Transport for NSW has also committed to improve lighting and CCTV surveillance at the station.

In January 2017, Transport for NSW will set up the work site, with construction due to start shortly after.

The works will take approximately 14 months to complete.

The upgrade at Leura Station is being delivered as part of the Transport Access Program, which is an initiative to provide safe and accessible public transport infrastructure across NSW.

Cheering each other on to victory Local cheerleading studio thrilled with success at national championships ERIN MAMO

ower Mountains kids recently cheered their way to the top at the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation’s (AASCF) National Championships.

The Championships are the largest and most prestigious cheer and dance championships in Australia with over 10,000 competitors.

Students from the Blaxland-based Fanci Footwork Dance and Cheer, travelled to the Gold Coast recently to take part in the three-day competition against squads from all over the country.

The studio took five cheer squads, two stunt groups and two dance teams.

Owner, Natasha Shandler, said she was bursting with pride at the teams’ efforts.

“We were able to win three championships in the competition which is fantastic,” Ms Shandler said.

“But what makes me more proud is the fact that they achieved personal goals that they had set themselves, like to have fun and support the team.”

Fanci Footwork’s Mini Novice Level 1 team were one of the three teams who came first at the championships, for the second year in a row.

Fanci Footwork Dance and Cheer squad members Ms Shandler said there’s always a level of suspense when the team takes the floor.

“The Mini’s hit their marks instantly which was great,” Ms Shandler said.

“We were so proud of their tumbling and stunting techniques.”

Prior to the competition, Ms Shandler said the squad had come together and put up personal goals.

“We wanted the girls to know it doesn’t

matter if they win a trophy or not, but that they did their best,” she said.

“We are so proud of each and every one of them, because they boosted one another up.

“If one was nervous, they were all there to show their support and we really hope that these skills that they have learnt through cheer, about being a part of a team, stays with them as they grow up.”

Toys destroyed after major blitz Dozens of dangerous toys were steamrolled last week as part of NSW Fair Trading’s annual product safety blitz in the lead up to Christmas.

This year’s pre-Christmas blitz saw NSW Fair Trading inspectors visit 746 businesses across NSW and inspect 10,727 individual products, with a particular focus on toys aimed at small children and projectiles.

“The team found 47 non-compliant and dangerous toys sold in retailers across the state, significantly lower than last year’s 83 toys,” Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said.

“Thomas the Tank Engine, Winnie the Pooh and Pikachu toys might look adorable, but if they’re non-compliant and unsafe, we must act to protect consumers.

It is our job to keep the shelves safe – we make no apologies for that.

“Every Christmas, Fair Trading does invaluable work to protect children and promote important product safety measures. We also value our partnership with Choice, whose experts test suspect toys and help keep them off the shelves.”

The largest category in non-compliant toys was those aimed at children three years and under, with dangerous small parts and choking hazards the most common feature.

Under Australian Consumer Law, individuals caught selling dangerous toys face a maximum fine of $220,000 while companies can face fines of up to $1.1 million.

Hitting the high notes: Opera star set to delight ERIN MAMO

stellar Soprano will take the stage at this year’s Christmas Music and Readings service at St Finbar’s Church in Glenbrook.

Taking place on Sunday, December 18, this year’s festive season service will feature the talented Briony Davidson, who recently graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Ms Davidson said she is very excited to be performing some of her favourites at the service.

“It should be really great,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to performing ‘Oh Holy Night’ with the choir and my solo, ‘He Shall Feed his Flock’.”

At only 21, the Leura local already boasts an impressive resume.

Earlier this year she took on a solo role in Opera New England’s ‘La Traviata’.

She has also performed as a Soloist with the Orpheus Strings Chamber Ensemble and in Rowan Fox’s opera ‘Change and the Moon’.

In 2015 she performed as a Chorister at the Sydney Opera House for Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Mass’ which was part of the Conservatorium of Music’s 100th Anniversary show.

Talent tenor, Michael Francis, is also expected to perform a solo at the St Finbar’s service, while Penrith Symphony Brass and Blue Mountains Grammar School’s Handbell Ensemble will also have audience members tapping away their feet with an array of entertaining musical numbers.

Sticking with tradition, a Christmas story will be read at the service by members of the congregation.

Congregation Member and Organiser, Robert Ampt, said church members are always encouraged to get involved in the event.

“The 500 strong congregation always adds much with its thrilling singing of favourite carols like ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, and ‘Silent Night’,” Mr Ampt said.

He said this year’s service will feature a special fixture, which promised to delight parents and youngsters alike.

“This year as a special treat, the children will be invited to sing ‘Away in a Manger’ by themselves,” he said.

The Christmas service will be held at 7.30pm on Sunday, December 18, at St Finbar’s Church, 46 Levy Street, Glenbrook.

Blue Mountains Police Rescue Coordinator, Dallas Atkinson, said it’s important that people take precautionary steps to ensure their own health and safety, including preparing before they go.

“Summer, particularly the period surrounding Christmas, is our busiest time for rescuing bushwalkers,” he said.

Mr Atkinson said the ‘Think Before You Trek’ initiative set up between Police NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service promotes the four most important things to keep in mind when planning a bushwalk.

“The acronym TREK reminds bushwalkers to Take adequate food, water and supplies, Register your plans with a friend or family member, Equip yourselves with an emergency beacon and Keep to the planned route or walking trail,” Mr Atkinson said.

e’s described it as “the greatest adrenaline rush of all time”, now 49-year-old Blaxland blind man Ben Felten is set to take on a challenge that even people with full 20/20 vision would never attempt.

Early next year, on a salt lake in outback South Australia, Felten and the Blind Speed team will challenge the world record of 265.33km/h for the fastest speed for a motorcycle ridden blindfolded at Speed Week 2017 (February 27-March 3).

With the support of his brother Leo, radio communications expert Paul Simpson and his navigator Kevin Magee, Felten will be the first blind person in the world to compete at a motorsport event.

For the former Penrith City Council worker, this won’t be the first time he has given the world record a crack.

In 2014, Felten set an Australian speed record of 219.96km/h at Temora in the state’s south west. However, due to the inclement weather, he fell short of breaking the Guinness World Record of 265.33km/h set by UK man Billy Baxter.

“This project has been going on for more than five years – I’ve put my life savings into it,” he admitted.

“When I heard about Speed Week I got in touch with them, flew down to South Australia and convinced the organising committee to take part.

“To actually attempt this record again is a massive undertaking and I can’t wait to get back on the bike.”

Speed Week is an annual five-day motorsport event held on a gigantic salt lake at Lake Gairdner, South Australia.

Unlike his last record attempt where Felten had just a few days to prepare, organisers at Speed Week have given the local daredevil a whole week to practice.

“The way the land speed record works is I do one run in one direction and once I put down a time then I must do a return run in the opposite direction within one hour,” Felten explained.

“Timekeepers then add up both runs and give you an average time. Then I submit all that data to Guinness World Records to verify the land speed record.”

Since going completely blind 12 years ago due to a degenerative eye disease, Felten always had a dream of getting back on the saddle again.

“For me, personally, it’s extremely rewarding. I get this sense of freedom and being in control,” he said, when asked why he continued to put his life at risk “People say I’m crazy but I just want to be like everyone else. I want to prove to people you can overcome barriers if you are prepared to work hard enough for it.”

Back in December 1935, farmers were seen chasing a pig down High Street in Penrith after the animal escaped from a lorry. It was a strange sight indeed, but plenty of people saw the irony, as a local lady had just days earlier won the Penrith Pig Catching competition.

Lawson store unveils biggest display yet ERIN MAMO

ick Rutherford’s Country is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and to commemorate, the shop that specialises in all things Christmas has opened its doors to their biggest Yuletide display yet.

Since unveiling the display to the public on October 30, a huge new supply of Christmas trimmings and treasures has arrived in store, making it hard for decorators to keep up, Owner, Rick Rutherford, said “Exhibits have had to be changed and updated daily because we have so much to display,” Mr Rutherford said.

“Each and every one of the rooms in the heritage gallery is boasting breathtaking new Christmas presentations and loads of wonderful gift-giving ideas.”

Rick’s gallery features ten rooms full to the brim of Christmas delights, all of which reflect one individual theme such as, Victorian, English, children’s, retro and cottage.

Some of the treasures that Christmas enthusiasts can pick up from each of the different rooms include such things as fine English china, folk wares and American glass.

Mr Rutherford said his annual Christmas tradition has been a labour of love and a good 12 months in the making, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We import a huge cache of festive goods from all over the world,” Mr Rutherford said.

“So we spend much of the year sourcing and ordering the unique pieces, many of which are one-of-a-kind and can only be found in our store.”

He said customers travel from near and far to bag that special piece to adorn their Christmas tree or mantel.

“We have people who come from all over the Mountains and surrounding regions to buy their Christmas pieces from here,” he said.

Nessie’s Daffodil Tearoom is also located at Rick’s and is open for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

For those who can’t go past an opportunity to sit amongst the tinsel and twinkle, lunch can be served inside one of the ten gallery rooms.

Rick Rutherford’s Country is located at 3 Badgery Crescent, Lawson.

The gallery will be open from 10am to 5.30pm, seven days a week, until Christmas Eve. Nessie’s Daffodil Tearoom is open 10am to 4pm every day.

being exploited by some companies. In fact, the ATO estimated as many as two million Australians are being (legally) short-changed on their superannuation contributions. Here’s how: There are a number of ways to contribute to superannuation, but for now, we are only interested in two: salary sacrifice and the 9.5 per cent compulsory employer contri-

bution (SGC).

As you know, salary sacrifice is your decision to contribute a portion of your gross salary into your super fund. By doing so, it saves you tax and bulks up your retirement savings. The 9.5 per cent contribution is from your employer and calculated on your gross salary. Now here’s where it get’s crazy.

The calculation for SGC is based on what is termed your ‘ordinary time earnings’ (OTE) and looks like this: 9.5% x OTE = SGC. But when you enter into a salary sacrifice arrangement, it has the effect of actually reducing your OTE and therefore reduces the amount of SGC your employer needs to pay.

But wait, it gets worse.

Oddly, all ‘salary sacrifice’ contributions are classified as ‘employer contributions’, even though they are coming off the top of your salary.

Therefore, they are actually counted as being part of your employer’s super guarantee payment to you! And should your salary-sacrificed contributions be more than the SGC required amount, guess what? Your employer won’t have to pay anything into your super.

A lot of agreements are formulated to not disadvantage staff, but it is a good idea to check the numbers anyway.

aving been in business for a while, I have observed that resilience is one of the most important traits to have. By ‘resilience’ I mean the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt well to change, and keep going in the face of adversity.

The generic definition of resilience is: “the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity” and “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness”. I particularly like those two almost opposing words: elasticity and toughness. Those attributes must go hand-in-hand for resilience to exist: if you are only ‘elastic’ with no toughness, you will be taken for granted and pulled in all directions. If you are only ‘tough’ without any flexibility, you won’t be able to go with the flow when required or stretch to accommodate a new situation.

So what does the future look like for business owners? Do the upcoming generations have the resilience to be successful business owners?

Mark McCrindle (from McCrindle Research) says that “Generation X

(those born 1963-1980) are reacting against the baby boomers’ overindulgent and free-spirited parenting style… they are also swinging back to… an emphasis on notions such as work ethic, etiquette, resilience, fortitude and taking responsibility for oneself. All the research we’ve done shows Gen Y (those born 1981-1994) lacks resilience and a work ethic. Generation Z (those born 1995-2009) is different”.

His research is showing a stronger emphasis on social justice and a generation of highly educated, technologically savvy, innovative thinkers, amongst Generation Z. So according to this research, there is likely to be a generation amongst us (Generation Y) who are highly unsuited to running a business. Before all the Gen Y’s get up in arms, this is of course a generalisation! But it does show us that the environment in which you’ve been raised, and your experiences, have a significant bearing on your level of resilience. Perhaps resilience can be learned later in life and the benefits of that new learning can be reaped?

ome sole traders start their business from their own home. According to Business.gov.au approximately one million individuals started their business from home. There are serious implications for a home-based business that individuals need to bear in mind.

Tax Issues: Your home is a principal place of business if you keep the business records there, and you have a dedicated space set aside for your business. In that case, you cannot claim home office expenses against other assessable income. But you can claim a proportion of the expenses related to the size of the dedicated space. This includes deductions for electricity and other utilities, depreciation of furniture and fixtures used in the space, interest on the mortgage over the property (if you own the home) or rent paid to a landlord. This usually totals to a bigger amount than the standard home office deduction. In addition, using your house as the principal place of business will attract Capital Gains Tax (CGT) when you sell the home. The tax office factors in the duration the

home was used as a principal place of business and the size of the area for the business when calculating the CGT. This does not apply to people who only claim a home office deduction.

Insurance Issues: When you start your business from home, you should advise your home and content insurer; also indicate if you are registered for GST. If you don’t, the insurer will decline a claim for damages or loss if they learn that the event occurred whilst using the home for business purposes. This may lead to increased premiums, but remember that such premiums are deductible from your revenue (Don’t forget to advise your car insurer too).

Compliance issues: Check with your local council to see if your business contravenes any council regulations related to the use of your home for business purposes. The local council’s LEP will provide this information but it’s always best to check. This is especially true for food-based businesses. Some businesses operating out-of-home have been shut down because the kitchen does not meet the required standards.

Big Poppa’s Burger Bar’s signature burger, Big Poppa, is a mouthful in itself with four pieces of Wagyu Beef, four pieces of Crispy Maple Bacon, four slices of American Cheese, topped with onion and their signature Juicy Sauce.

“We have spent months creating our menu and will only provide the best burgers by sourcing the best produce locally, so you only get the freshest and tastiest burgers every single day,” Mr O’Shea said.

The menu boasts an array of burgers, loaded shakes, desserts, cocktails and more.

The duo are already scouting new locations in Sydney and as far as Perth to grow their empire.

Big Poppa’s Burger Bar will be located at 1/269 High Street, Penrith. It’s scheduled to open in early January.

f you have a child then there’s a good chance you know the name Jimmy Giggle, or have at least seen his smiling face on your TV screen.

Children’s entertainer Jimmy ‘Giggle’ Rees plays the human face of the ABC’s hit children’s TV show ‘Giggle and Hoot’, where he stars alongside a host of characters with cute-as-pie names like Hoot, Hootabelle, Pirate Hootbeard and Gigglefangs.

It may seem a little odd for a 29-yearold to spend his days hanging out with puppets, but for Jimmy getting paid to be silly is the ideal job.

“I really love being able to make kids laugh,” he said “The show is sweet and beautiful and nice at times as well, but it does also rely a lot on that slapstick comedy.”

The creative team are constantly coming up with new funny ideas.

“The guys at work say ‘we just need to give Jimmy a prop or a new costume and he’ll go to town’,” he laughed.

“Some of the magic comes from messing around on set and going ‘oh we have this new prop, what can we do with it’.”

For Jimmy, ‘Giggle and Hoot’ has also been the perfect training ground for his latest role – father to son, Lenny.

“I think I kind of understand what all

those other parents were going through that I’ve met over the years,” he laughed.

But beyond sympathising with the sleepless nights, Jimmy has also picked up a few tricks when it comes to communicating with the little ones.

“On ‘Giggle and Hoot’ we don’t tend to speak down to kids, we just sort of get on with it,” he said.

“I think that’s something that’s influenced the way I speak to kids and Lenny too.

“You can’t dumb things down because they are smart, they’re really intelligent.

“He’s only 20 months old but he gets a lot, he understands everything. It’s amazing how quickly they pick things up.”

Along with his popularity with the kids, Jimmy has also become somewhat of a hit with mums who find him just as cute as his owl friends.

“In the early days there was this Facebook page that popped up called ‘I Could Teach Jimmy Giggle a Thing or Two’, which my wife and I found kind of funny,” he laughed.

“I thought sideburns went out in the 80s.”

The return of scurvy: Why we should have seen it coming The reported return of scurvy is hardly surprising when you consider we’re a society that’s overfed and undernourished...

There’s always plenty of weird and wonderful stories about food and nutrition in the media, but last week I came across a particularly surprising one.

It seems that scurvy has been identified among a group of diabetic patients at a western Sydney hospital.

Now if the word scurvy sounds familiar to you it’s probably from primary school history lessons.

Scurvy is a disease that was common among sailors on long trips due to a lack of vitamin C-rich fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet.

This comeback may seem odd but it makes sense when you consider that as a population we are overfed but undernourished.

We eat too many nutrient-void processed foods and less of the vitamin C rich foods i.e. fresh fruits and vegetables like citrus, kiwifruit, berries, broccoli, baby spinach and capsicum.

This resurgence of scurvy also highlights how important it is to take nutrition advice from reliable sources, rather than listening to the current trend which

seems to suggest that fruit is bad for us.

So how do we ensure that we don’t end up with this historical disease?

First off it’s important to include plenty of fruits and vegetables into the diet. Aim for variety and focus on eating a range of colours to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs.

The other problem that was identified was overcooking of vegetables.

While some of the patients were eating vegetables regularly they were being overcooked which leads to the loss of nutrients like vitamin C. When cooking vegetables try steaming or stir frying rather than boiling and avoid

cooking to the point where they become mushy and fall apart.

Also, try to have a mix of cooked vegetables and raw salads.

This story is a stark reminder that we need to focus on eating more of the good stuff, rather than focusing solely on eating less of the bad stuff.

In my opinion the best approach is to swap foods e.g. instead of chocolate have an orange, or instead of chips have a side salad with baby spinach and capsicum.

If you think you may have issues with your diet it’s best to speak to an Accredited Practising Dietitian for personalised dietary advice.

One to note: A novel idea if you’re still looking for something different and rewarding for that wine-loving friend or relative this Christmas, is an Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, a McLaren Vale Shiraz or an Adelaide Hills Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay that are all excellent wines from Wolf Blass, and which bear wonderfully colourful one-offf labels by acclaimed Australian artist David Bromley (pictured).

We’ve all heard about doing 10,000 steps a day, but is it really the key to losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle?

In a generation where technology is the reason we are sitting more than standing, these same tech companies are selling tools to encourage us to move more. A great marketing team is behind the latest craze in fitness watches and activity trackers with sales increasing 110 per cent over the last 12 months.

It’s great to see a nation which is struggling to control a chronic disease epidemic become concerned about the amount of movement we are doing. But is 10,000 steps the answer to increasing our fitness and improving our health?

The most important thing to understand with exercise is one size does not fit all and each individual is capable of and requires a different amount of exercise.

In Australia seven million people, or one in three, are currently diagnosed with at least one chronic health condition. These seven million people all require different levels and intensities of exercise.

The number “10,000” steps has no real scientific background, and yes it is a great target to start with, but based on your health you need to set realistic goals. If

you have no chronic health conditions and want to lose an amount of weight, you may need more than 10,000 steps to achieve your goal. However, if you have chronic arthritis and cannot walk 10,000 steps you may need other exercises such as swimming.

Other factors that influence our weight loss is the speed and intensity that these steps are taken at.

To burn calories, you need to increase your heart rate, so 10,000 nice slow strolls

to the printer and back all day might not be the solution to your weight loss. We also have to look at other factors such as diet.

Let’s get one thing straight, moving more absolutely has a great impact on our health. Wearable fitness trackers are a great tool in assessing our movement and I encourage everyone to get on board.

However, be sure to seek advice on how much movement is right for you.

The latest summer nail trend comes just in time for the festive season! All about adding a bit of extra sparkle and shine, the latest nail craze is ‘chrome nails’.

Creating a unique and magical mirror like effect, every woman is heading out during her lunch break in search of a nail salon that knows how to do them.

Whether it’s shimmery eyeshadow or glimmering highlighter, we all love makeup that shines – we just can’t get enough of that ‘made of fairy dust’ feeling.

Seen all over Instagram, beauty gurus and celebrities are sharing the shiny obsession and jumping on board with trying out chrome nails.

To get the nails, you might want a professional to help you achieve them but, if you are more of a DIY girl, they are actually fairly straight forward to achieve.

First step is to pick a gel base coat.

Different gel-based colours alter the mirrored effect.

If you want a true chromatic silver, choose black! For a rose gold, mirror a bright true red underneath as a base will do the trick. Have a play around, as the

combinations are endless! Paint your base coat and allow it to dry using a UV light to cure them.

Second step is to apply a gel top coat. The magic part of these nails definitely is the chrome powder you put over the top but this step is so important. You want to find a gel top coat that the powder can stick to, a polish with no texture, you don’t want it to be sliding around everywhere as you apply the powder.

Step three is where the fun begins! You will need a little foam eyeshadow applicator or a silicone tipped cuticle stick to rub the powder on with. Chrome powder contains ultra tiny iridescent pigments

that once applied properly reflect back and make your flashy nails look like they have been struck by light!

You can also get holographic powder versions and use it the same way for a shiny after effect every time you move your nail.

Just rub the mesmerising powder firmly and evenly over the nail and then dust off any excess.

Step four, you want to finish with a top coat to prevent your nails chipping and to make sure your chrome manicure lasts throughout the party season, you can get up to three weeks wear so definitely go out and show them off!

fter bouncing around the league for a few years as well as a stint overseas, new Panthers recruit Michael Oldfield is ready to settle down and start fresh.

The 26-year-old winger, who began his career at Manly in 2012 before playing with the Roosters for a season, Catalans in the English Super League for two years as well as South Sydney, is hoping a new one-year deal at Penrith will be the start of a successful stint out west.

“It’s been a hard few years,” Oldfield admitted. “I went to France to chase a regular spot and I got that, but I always knew coming back to the NRL would be difficult because it’s a much greater competition.”

Whilst Oldfield enjoyed his two years at Catalans, which resulted in 29 tries in just 44 games, the speedster was missing home.

Upon return, Oldfield secured a contract at the Rabbitohs for 2016 but only played three games in first grade, scoring two tries.

With nothing in the works at Redfern for 2017, Oldfield received a call from Panthers boss Phil Gould, who was very keen to add the former Tongan international to his backline stocks.
