Council stands firm on anti-airport campaign despite internal rumblings Councillors Christie and Schreiber taken to task over airport backflip at first Council meeting of the year ERIN MAMO

ozens of anti-airport protestors descended on Council last Tuesday to hear what both the Mayor and Councillors had to say about the latest scandal surrounding the contentious development.

In December last year, Council was attacked and publicly outed by The Daily Telegraph after two of its own Councillors stated they now supported plans for a western Sydney airport and suggested Council had blown all of its money on the anti-airport campaign.

With their signs, t-shirts and strong voices on display, members of the Residents Against a Western Sydney Airport (RAWSA) sat in the gallery and listened intently as Liberal party member, Councillor Brendan Christie, defended his new stance.

“Badgerys Creek Airport is going to be built, it has been approved,” he said.

“By opposing the second Sydney Airport, after the Federal Government has eliminated one of our biggest concerns, being the merge point over Blaxland, we are denying the single biggest employment opportunity for our young people.

“Now instead of rock throwing we need to put together a strategy to move forward.”

In his Mayoral Minute, Mayor Mark Greenhill stated first and foremost that the Telegraph had got it wrong.

“We are not a broke Council,” Cr Greenhill stressed.

He then went on to denounce the disunity.

“It isn’t good enough to vote ‘yes’ for a budget and then publicly say we are broke,” Cr Greenhill said.

A number of other Councillors took to the floor at the meeting to express their disappointment with both Cr Christie and Councillor Kevin Schreiber, with Independent, Shae Foenander, appearing to be

At one point, the Ward 3 Councillor used the words “show pony” and stated that a particular Councillor was using the media and attention for political gain.

She said she was “totally disillusioned” with local politics.

“Two Councillors said one thing here before the election and then did another,” Cr Foenander said.

“I knew that happened in Federal and State politics, but I didn’t think it would happen here.”

Ms Foenander then tabled two documents that showed prior to the election, Cr Christie and Cr Schreiber both supported the motion to oppose the airport.

Both Cr Christie and Cr Schreiber proposed amendments to the Mayoral Minute at last week’s meeting but they were all rejected.

All other Councillors re-confirmed their support for the anti-airport campaign.

Last Friday I had the honour of meeting NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian at a small gathering arranged by State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres.

The Premier is on something of a charm offensive in her first few weeks in the role, wanting to meet as many people as

possible before getting down to the serious business of Parliament.

Ms Berejiklian worked the room superbly well, and even remembered local Blue Mountains resident Graham Chapman’s idea of a Nepean River hovercraft!

She spoke to local business people for around an hour, chatting about everything from tourism to education.

It was quite clear that the Premier is a very good operator, and will certainly win people over as she continues to meet and greet them throughout the state.

Neighbours express concern after approval of ‘glamping’ site ERIN MAMO

Development Application (DA) proposing to offer ‘glamping’ style accommodation in a remote spot in Blackheath has been approved by Blue Mountains Council, much to the concern of nearby neighbours.

At last week’s Council meeting a DA was approved for owner of My Adventure Group, James Castrission, to trial corporate weekends on his property for 28 days a year.

Mr Castrission said that tourism is an important part of employment in the Blue Mountains and he wants to share the beautiful surroundings he has with other people.

“It’s fantastic to get the OK from Council and I’m really excited to be able to provide a world class experience in our amazing part of the world,” he said.

But Mr Castrission’s neighbours are not happy with the approval of the camp site.

Retiree, John Sommerlad, said he will be directly affected by the entertaining that will be going on next door to his place.

“The neighbours hosted camps last year, even after being told by the Council to stop and there was noise and lights and up to 20 people sitting around a camp fire of a night,” Mr Sommerlad said.

Leura: Concern for man missing from care facility

Police are appealing for the public’s help as they search for a man missing from a nursing home in the Blue Mountains since yesterday (February 6).

Frank Mifsud, 69, is believed to have left an aged care facility at Leura where he is a resident sometime after 2.30am on Monday.

Police are searching the local area for Mr Mifsud and have concerns for his welfare as he suffers from a medical condition.

Mr Mifsud is described as being of Caucasian appearance and about 165175cm tall with tattoos on his arm and chest. He was wearing a bright yellow shirt and dark shorts.

Anyone who sees Mr Mifsud should contact police immediately.

Police are investigating after a multivehicle crash at Blaxland on Sunday, February 5.

Emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway at Blaxland around 10.40am on Sunday, following reports that several cars collided.

Several people were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before three adults were taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition, two children were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital and four adults were taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment of minor

injuries. Officers attached to Blue Mountains Local Area Command attended and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The Great Western Highway was closed in both directions for several hours.

Mount Hay: Woman rescued after leg becomes trapped

About 6pm on Friday, January 27, a 31-year-old female from Bondi Junction had been undertaking the Butterbox Canyon in Mount Hay with a group of canyoners.

While negotiating a section of cliff, the female’s right leg became wedged in a crack in the face of the cliff, which was exposed by a drop of about 120 metres below.

Police Rescue Operators and Special Operations Paramedics abseiled to the female where they worked for about five hours with a hammer and chisel to free the female’s leg.

Once free, the woman was hauled to the cliff top and conveyed to hospital for treatment.

Aged care services to change hands ERIN MAMO

ged day services in the Blue Mountains that are currently managed by the local health district will soon be taken over by a non-government organisation.

Due to changes in the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) will transition their aged care services over to Uniting and their Healthy Living for Seniors Program.

Mondeval Day Centre in Leura and Springwood Community Health Care will be affected by the changes.

NBMLHD General Manager, Kylie Burke, said Uniting have a long history of providing support services for aged residents, including day services.

Aged day services operate as a place where the elderly in the community can come together and socialise and take part in recreational activities.

“I have been assured by Uniting that the transition will ensure the needs and preferences of clients will be secured,” Ms Burke said.

NBMLHD, which has provided aged day services to the community for more than 20 years, said the transition is expected to begin in March this year.

“Staff at Uniting will also be able to provide tailored home and community care to

clients to help them continue to live in their own homes.”

The new program that will be offered by Uniting is set to establish social groups that offer get-togethers and activities with the aim of helping people have some fun while boosting their wellbeing and independence.

Current evidence suggests that spider bites are very unlikely to cause necrotic lesions as commonly believed and such cases presenting as suspected spider bites should be thoroughly investigated for other causes.

Play it safe and get to hospital.

Ukulele Festival takes centre stage Katoomba gears up to host the world’s largest ukulele festival this weekend for the eighth year in a row ERIN MAMO

or three days each year, Katoomba transforms into the Ukelele capital of the world, where locals have fallen in love with the humble little instrument and its soothing sounds.

And uke enthusiasts will once again get the chance to play and listen until their hearts’ content when the eighth Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival kicks off this Friday, February 10.

Festival Director, Steve Roberts, said the popular festival is always a fun event.

“This year we have a new stage and we can accommodate over 140 acts ranging from pop to folk and punk,” he said.

The event, which is held across nine stages in and around the Carrington Hotel, will showcase several ukulele artists including Hawaiian songstress YOZA. YOZA’s style is uncanny, with Hip Hop, R&B and Latin influences all intertwined into her acoustic sound.

Another standout feature of the festival is its focus on encouraging new talent and community music.

Mr Roberts said the festival has become a popular platform for locals to jam.

clubs from across the country, and friends who strum together can now actually put a set together and have a go at the big stage,” Mr Roberts said.

The festival is a free event and will begin on Friday with a dinner at the Carrington Hotel from 7pm.

Then on Saturday there will be five free ukulele workshops held at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. These include a beginners in ukulele workshop, a song workshop and singing with your ukulele workshop.

While on Sunday there will be numerous jam and strum sessions on offer.

Run by volunteers, the Blue Mountains Ukulele Club puts on the event each year purely for their love of music and the instrument.

And it draws huge crowds, with about 9,000 people tipped to converge on the region across the three days.

This year there will be raffles and festival merchandise for sale as well as donation boxes on each stage, which will help to cover the costs of the festival.

The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, The Carrington Hotel and The Paragon Café all generously provide venues for the festival as well as offering a range of meals and drinks for festival goers.

My number one piece of advice just has to be: ‘If it seems too good to be true, it probably is’. Over many years as a financial planner, I think I must have seen every outlandish invest-

ment scheme used to coax money from investors. From ‘ostrich breeding’ through to ‘jojoba bean plantations’, it would seem amazingly easy to lure innocent investors by promising incredibly high potential returns.

A very close second comes: ‘The higher the return, the higher the risk’. In the investment world, all returns are measured against what is termed the ‘risk free’ rate. Usually taken from a Government bond (but a bank deposit suffices just as well), this rate represents the current investment return available with no risk. Any investment that is offering returns higher than this rate carries with it the risk of loss.

And yes, that applies even when the advertisement proudly proclaims the investment to be a ‘gilt-edged, blue-chip opportunity’.

And finally, there are many people who mistake their investment hubris for expertise, so it’s a good idea not to take any investment advice from your social circle. We all have money, but that certainly doesn’t make us experts, so the best advice is to steer well clear of ‘amateurs’ when deciding on your investment choices.

But how do you motivate yourself when you would rather be back on the beach with a margarita and a trashy novel? You know that you still love running your own business, but how do you kick start yourself again?

Reward yourself regularly Small rewards (e.g. chocolate) for smaller tasks and larger rewards for ticking off the bigger goals (e.g. a night out at the end of the week).

These give you something to look forward to, and have the added bonus of giving your brain and/or body a rest from work for a period.

Trade your ‘reluctant to do’ tasks with someone else For example, you might need some content written for your website, and the copywriter you know needs something you can offer: win-win!

While we all have to sometimes do tasks we are less fond of, there is nothing wrong with delegating them

when we can.

Set ‘milestones’, not ‘deadlines’ Sometimes the subtle change in language can shift the negative feelings about a task.

Some people respond positively to the stress of a deadline, but for many, this just decreases motivation and creates inertia (i.e. a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged).

Remember the reasons why you are completing a task or working towards a goal Or more broadly, remember why you are in business in the first place. This can help re-focus you and retrieve your confidence and enthusiasm. We can get bogged down in the detail, but being mindful of what the end result will be can be highly motivating.

Find a ‘goal partner’ with whom you can be accountable for your goals Working on a task alone, while necessary for many of us, can give us great opportunities to procrastinate and make excuses.

Try finding someone in a similar position to you.

I always said to myself that if I ever thought ‘oh here comes ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ again’ I’d stop doing it,” Tom Burlinson said when asked about his almost 20-year career singing the songs of Frank Sinatra.

With his first Sinatra show in 1998 the singer/actor opened the door to a lifetime of shows, bringing the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes to audiences around the country.

This love affair has provided the entertainer – known to many for his role in the classic Aussie film ‘The Man From Snowy River’ – not only with a stable career in an unstable industry, but the chance to honour one of music history’s most iconic and unique performers.

“I suppose I keep in the back of my mind that I am trying to do justice to the great man himself,” Tom said.

“I don’t impersonate him but I am trying to celebrate him and make people appreciate the wonderful career he had, the fantastic output of material that he had and his talent.”

While his shows are not an impersonation as such, Tom does admit that Sinatra’s style has started to permeate all his performances.

“I am very, very influenced by his interpretation of songs and his singing style, so even when I’m sort of trying not

to sound like Sinatra people still say ‘oh gosh you sound like Sinatra’,” he laughed.

“For me Sinatra was the greatest of them all, so it’s not such a bad style to imitate.”

Tom’s latest show is ‘Simply Sinatra’ – which takes audiences through all of the Rat Pack legend’s greatest hits.

“It goes right back to the early days of the 1940s when Sinatra first rose to stardom with that beautiful, romantic lyrical kind of singing that he did then,” he said.

Backed by a five piece band, Tom will be bringing the show to Penrith this month.

In the last few years the entertainer has also started taking his musical talent to the seas, with performances on cruise ships throughout the Pacific and South East Asia.

“It’s another source of employment for entertainers now,” Tom said.

“It’s an industry that is growing and I think the standard of entertainment on cruise ships has improved in recent years.”

It’s not a bad way to earn a living when you consider the perks of the job.

“I keep saying to myself ‘everyone else is paying for this and I’m being paid’,” Tom laughed.

he NSW New England is not a wine region we hear a lot about, yet like so many of our other younger, smaller and sometimes off the beaten track hideaways, it’s one that’s full of great surprises for the wine adventurer.

And amongst its many gems is a winery called Topper’s Mountain at Tingha near Armidale on the New England Tablelands. One that owners Mark and Stephanie Kirby never cease to surprise with the quality of the grapes they grow in this high elevation (900 metres) cool climate region, and the resultant wines that are made for them by celebrated contract maker Mike Hayes.

Their 2015 Barrel Aged Gewurztraminer is one such drop, an absolutely top-notch Gewurz whose aromatics are all about clouds of Turkish delight, stone fruits, a little honey, marzipan and musk, and which couple on a creamy, fruit-laden palate that’s also got gorgeous hints of spice, oaky tannin, acidity and has a lovely crispy finish.

This wine is worth every cent of its $35 price tag.

One to note: Down in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, Garry and Julie Hounsell at Toolangi Vineyards also grow their own premium fruit, and have their wines made for them – in their case by a number of makers who are supremos in individual varietals.

It’s a philosophy that rewards all from grower to consumer as it results in wines of wonderfully unique and distinctive personality. One such that’s just been released is their Toolangi 2016 Rosé made from Shiraz grapes off their Dixons Creek vineyard, and crafted for them by Dominique Portet Winery.

The burden of diabetes in Australia is extensive. There are two main forms of diabetes – insulin dependant (Type 1) and non-insulin dependant (Type 2) diabetes.

In Type 1, the body has an inability to produce insulin. In Type 2, the body produces less insulin and the bodily tissues are resistant to, and unable to adequately utilise the insulin produced.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that in 2014-15 1.2 million people in Australia have a form of diabetes, with one million of these being Type 2 diabetics. This is significant considering the preventable nature of the disease.

Currently there is no cure for diabetes, but rather it involves a lifelong allied health approach to managing the condition. Podiatrists play an integral role in the management of individuals with diabetes.

At a very minimum, yearly check-ups are recommended to assess and monitor changes within the lower limbs and feet.

We carry out both vascular and neurological assessments to determine a patient’s

risk status, and are able to provide the necessary advice and treatment relating to this, further minimising the risk of developing long-term complications.

When not managed properly, diabetes can wreak havoc on the body. It can affect the eyes, kidneys and also cardiovascular health. One of the most important things that we look for as a Podiatrist is the level of protective sensation within the feet.

High blood glucose levels can damage nerve fibres as well as sensitive vasculature, impacting on one’s sensation and ability for the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

he Penrith Panthers have flown home with a cheque worth $240,000 after they unexpectedly finished runnersup at last weekend’s Auckland Nines.

After sending over a team largely full of unknowns, the young Panthers shocked the competition by winning every single game leading into the final before falling short to the Sydney Roosters 10-8 in the decider.

The Roosters held a 10-0 lead at half-time, with Daniel Tupou and Bernard Lewis scoring tries.

Malakai Watene-Zelezniak and Nathan Cleary crossed for the Panthers in the second half, but goal kicking proved the only difference in the end.

Earlier in the tournament, the Panthers won all of their pool games including victories over the Bulldogs 28-18, the Sharks 16-14 and the Titans 22-4.

In the elimination quarter final, Penrith prevailed over Manly 16-12 in extra time before dismantling old foes Parramatta 13-0, to book their place in the final.

New recruit James Tamou made his club debut a memorable one by scoring two long range Penrith Panthers centre Waqa Blake scores a sensational try against Parramatta at the tries in Penrith’s opening match.
