t appears ANZAC Day marches will go ahead in the Blue Mountains this year despite debate over who will pay for security measures and traffic management plans.

There were fears last week that four ANZAC Day marches that take place annually in the Mountains were to be cancelled due to additional costs of anti-terrorism measures imposed by the NSW Government.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill attacked the State Government, blaming them for the possible cancellations.

“The cost to cover the marches at Glenbrook, Springwood, Katoomba and Blackheath is about $70,000,” Cr Greenhill said.

“For the Government this is a small amount, for the veterans and communities it is priceless.”

The $70,000 expenditure covers the cost of water-filled barriers to close roads, among other things, which are now mandatory since the State Government imposed new regulations in late 2016.

While it’s primarily up to the event organisers in the community to fund the ANZAC Day marches, Blue Mountains City Council said over the years they have been supporting the event and have given local organisers an estimated $35,000 for traffic management plans.

A Spokesperson for the Minister for Justice and Police, Troy Grant, said it is the responsibility of local council to fund these events.

“The NSW Government wrote to the Council last year, offering additional financial support with road management connected with ANZAC Day,” the spokesperson said.

“It is perplexing that the Blue Moun-

tains City Council can afford a $130,000 campaign opposing Badgerys Creek airport, yet it cannot afford to honour our veterans.”

Roads Minister Duncan Gay also laid the boot into Council, calling Mayor Greenhill “dishonest” as the debate took a nasty turn late last week.

“The Council are up there crying poor – this is a Council that would spend $130,000 opposing Sydney’s second airport in western Sydney… yet they couldn’t find the $17,000 to honour our diggers,” Mr Gay told Radio 2GB on Thursday.

“This Mayor – this nasty little leftie Mayor – went out yesterday and absolutely lied… he said the State Government should have offered money… he completely ignored the fact that we sent a letter on December 15… it went to Council on December 20 and was acknowledged by Council having received it, where we offered to fund half given it’s on the Great Western Highway if they funded half.”

Mr Gay said Mr Greenhill had “demeaned” ANZAC Day and was dishonest.

“I can’t believe that this guy has been out there playing politics over ANZAC Day when he and his Council actually knew that the State Government had last year promised to pay half,” Mr Gay told 2GB. Less than 24 hours after its initial press release calling on the State and Federal Governments to cover costs, Blue Mountains City Council issued another statement, saying it would pledge its support for the traditional ANZAC Day marches across the Blue Mountains and would “assist local RSL branches meet the crippling costs of new anti-terrorism security measures imposed by the NSW Government”.

“I am stunned that the NSW Government seems to think they have no responsibility for the safe conduct of ANZAC Day marches” by all event organisers, including the local RSL sub branches, in the Blue Mountains.

I cannot say why these security measures are not required in other locations at this point in time, but this is what we have been told,” Mayor Greenhill said.

“Despite the new security measures, such as the installation of water filled barriers to prevent vehicle incursion, being a NSW Government requirement, there is no funding forthcoming to cover the unexpected additional costs for event organisers, the majority of which are community groups and non-profit organisations.

“I am stunned that the NSW Government seems to think they have no respon-

sibility for the safe conduct of ANZAC Day marches in this state.”

The Mayor said that Blue Mountains City Council will again support the local RSL branches as best it can, within available resources, to ensure the ANZAC Day marches have the best chance of going ahead in 2017.

“The possibility of ANZAC Day marches being cancelled is unacceptable,” he said.

“We will continue our discussions with NSW Police and ex-services organisations in the Blue Mountains to find a workable solution.

“The Council will consider providing one off, limited financial support or the provision of heavy vehicles as an alternative to water-filled and concrete barriers to help the RSL branches meet the new security requirements. We fully expect the NSW Government to do the same.”

It would appear Council and the NSW Government will now share the costs.

A senior police officer has also expressed his disappointment at the situation.

North West Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford says he will do everything he can to see the marches go ahead.

“For many years I have been part of the ANZAC Day ceremonies across Sydney and I am extremely disappointed to hear reports that some areas may not go ahead with their regular marches this year,” Assistant Commissioner Clifford said.

Council’s airport stance to be tested Mayor orders councillors to publicly reconfirm their opposition to 24/7 airport amid disunity in ranks ERIN MAMO

his month, the Blue Mountains City Council’s opposition to Badgerys Creek will be tested after two Councillors made comments recently to suggest that money had been wasted on Council’s anti-airport campaign.

In December last year, The Daily Telegraph reported that Liberal Councillors, Brendan Christie and Kevin Schreiber, did not agree with the amount of money that the Council had spent on the campaign to oppose the controversial 24/7 airport, which could potentially threaten the Blue Mountains’ World Heritage status.

Mayor of the Blue Mountains, Mark Greenhill, immediately took to social media stating that the Council had been unanimous in its support for the campaign against the airport.

“Councillors opposed the airport unanimously before the election,” Cr Greenhill wrote.

“I was shattered to read the story in the Telegraph, I knew that a story was running because I was asked to comment.”

In response, Cr Christie told The Record that his position on the Badgerys Creek airport, which was given the green light

by Prime Minister Malcolm Turbull in December last year, is consistent with the position he took to the election.

“Now the Blaxland merge point issue is resolved it’s time to move forward with a positive agenda,” Cr Christie said.

“Our city needs to determine how we will accommodate this new airport in our social and economic framework.

“We need to come together and work on a strategy to tap into the benefits of the airport by boosting tourism, creating local jobs and lifting the performance of the villages that line our once-great tourism corridor.”

Cr Greenhill now plans to bring the matter to the first Council meeting of 2017, on Tuesday, January 31.

“I will be presenting a Mayoral Minute at the beginning of the next meeting,” Cr Greenhill said.

“Given that Council’s position has been publicly challenged, it is right and proper to test the support on the floor of Council.

“My Mayoral Minute will ask all Councillors to recommit to the campaign and our position of opposition to an airport at Badgerys Creek.

“I would like to see the community attend the meeting so that they can assess the position of Council,” he added.

While the chemo the toddler has is sporadic and is planned according to her health, Mr Olsen said she is expected to undergo another round this week.

“Chemo will be this week, depending on her blood levels,” Mr Olsen said.

“The doctors need to make sure her body is strong enough.”

Mr Olsen said that at the moment, Jane’s doctors cannot provide any insight into when she will be able to stop chemo.

“Cancer is a very individual beast and in Jane’s case the way forward adjusts with each round of chemo,” he said.

Since Jane’s admission into hospital her aunt, Karla, has set up a Go Fund Me page to help Jane’s parents cover some of the medical expenses they are facing.

ver Christmas, while most threeyear-olds opened presents and played with their new toys, little Jane Olsen and her family prepared for another round of chemotherapy to treat the toddler’s rare form of cancer.

In August 2016, Jane was diagnosed with Embryonic Rhabdomyosarcoma after doctors found a tumour in her abdomen.

Since then, Jane has undergone surgery and numerous rounds of chemo to stop the cancer that was growing at a rapid pace.

Jane’s parents, Rachel and Angus Olsen, who live in Katoomba and own CAFÉ Xpresso Comics, said their daughter is remarkable.

“Her strength and ability to adapt is unbelievable,” Mr Olsen said.

“If it wasn’t for the physical signs you’d assume by her personality she is a happy, healthy little girl with not a care in the world.

“I think she assumes all children go through this horror.”

Lady Luck returns to the Carrington Hotel ERIN MAMO

he Lady Luck Festival is on again at the Carrington Hotel for its eighth year in a row.

This year, the festival will take place on Saturday, January 21, with food, fashion and entertainment available for the whole family.

The vintage-themed celebration gives enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase rocking customs and culture from the 1950s’ era.

Nicole Scheinflug, Sales and Event Coordinator at the Carrington, said they are expecting this year’s event to be the biggest one yet. “This year we are holding the festival in just one day, so there will be something on for everyone for most of the day,� Ms Scheinflug said. “There will be a jumping castle for the kids, a hot rod and vintage car show on Katoomba Street, lots of stalls and markets, swing dancing and dancing lessons for all ages with the Sydney Swing Katz, and a huge party into the night.�

Festival organisers have also decided to hold the Miss Lady Luck Competition again which was a big hit last year. “The Miss Lady Luck Competition for

2017 is calling all dolls to showcase the best in vintage style, character and confidence,� Ms Scheinflug said.

And for the first time, Little Miss Lady Luck will be part of the event which will allow children to dress up and be part of the fun.

Other things to looks out for at the festival include the Boogie Bop Dame ladies who will be transforming hair into vintage master pieces, a mobile bar for the adults and Americana-inspired food stalls.

A ‘Diner and Dance’ party will take place on the evening of the 21st, with guests encouraged to frock up and dance the night away to live bands and performances from Miss Death and MC Jay Katz, the Sydney Swing Katz, The Wasted Ones and That Red Head and The Fire Down Below.

The Lady Luck Festival is a free event and is a proud supporter of the Black Dog Institute.

How amazing is this young lady! She loves to run and chase balls, toys and will always sit for a treat when asked. She has come into the shelter as a stray and her owners have until the 24th to collect her otherwise she will be available for Adoption.

Do they come any cuter than this little fella? He is well looked after and is a very sweet and happy little dog so someone must be missing him. With a friendly and happy personality this cutie would make a great addition to most families out there.

Biggie came into the shelter in November with his beautiful girlfriend Jessie.

Sadly for Biggie, Jessie got Adopted and now he sits and waits for someone to notice him. He is quite stressed not having Jessie in his life and he needs a kind understanding home to let him settle in.

Spot will need a very special owner, one that can devote time and love to him and show him that everything is OK. Sadly he suffers from separation anxiety and also doesn’t like fireworks and the like.

This is the reason he was surrendered as his owner just could not care for him any more.

Poor Molly is very distressed at the shelter, she has been surrendered after her owner passed away and there was no one to take her in. Molly will require a very caring and kind owner that has the patience to let her settle in to her new home and get used to a whole new life.

Her stunning coat makes her look tiger-like and her eyes look right into yours.

She is stressed in the shelter and doesn’t seem to like the other cats getting in her personal space. If you have more than one other cat it might be too much for her.

We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.

Turtles gifted safer breeding areas Glenbrook Lagoon cleaner and safer for wildlife thanks to basin upgrades ERIN MAMO

he turtles of Glenbrook have a new home!

Recent upgrades to stormwater basins around Glenbrook Lagoon are now complete and have provided new homes to turtles and other wildlife.

The basins, which are located at three points around the Lagoon, are designed to collect stormwater, capture rubbish and sediment, and filter pollutants before slowly releasing cleaner water to the lagoon.

The basins form part of a series of linked stormwater treatments, which includes a wetland in the eastern basin to further improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife such as turtles and frogs.

Blue Mountains City Council said it is trying to establish and maintain turtle habitat at the Lagoon to help protect and enhance turtle breeding areas.

Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said local residents nearby have expressed how happy they are with Council’s work.

“Anything we can do to protect or enhance turtle breeding habitats will help Eastern Long-necked Turtles have a future,” Cr Greenhill said.

“It is very satisfying to have all the basins done now and the prospect of

The newly-created wetland area offers a sandy beach area for turtles to nest in, complete with basking and perching logs.

While Eastern Long-necked Turtles are currently a common species throughout the Blue Mountains, they are faced with a rapidly ageing population due to predation of nests by foxes and high rates of road kill in urban areas.

Council is now looking at other ways to provide habitat for turtles at Glenbrook Lagoon, including using innovative ‘floating wetland’ technology to outfox the foxes and protect turtle nests.

Surveys found an absence of turtles under 10 at Glenbrook Lagoon, reflecting high juvenile mortality rate trends around Australia that show very few baby turtles are surviving to breeding age.

Christmas was a little brighter The Blue Mountains Youth Council worked with the community to collect 71 gifts through their Community Christmas ‘Giving Tree’ drive for 2016.

“A big congratulations goes to the Blue Mountains Youth Council for the continued success of their ‘Giving Tree’ initiative,” said Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill.

“They are really showing us what great young leaders and ambassadors they are. I am also greatly appreciative of the community’s generosity and Christmas spirit by helping those less fortunate.”

Blue Mountains Youth Councillor Grace Faulder thanked those who contributed to the concept.

“Thank you to the community for donating so many gifts through the Christmas ‘Giving Tree’. Together we have been able to give presents to so many local young people in need,” she said.

The gifts were collected through the Springwood Library and Council headquarters in Katoomba.

The Platform Youth Services organisation greatly assisted by distributing the 71 gifts to people between the ages of 12-25, in need during Christmas in the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury areas.

“The staff that passed on the gifts to the young people saw the look of anticipation and excitement on their faces when they were told that they had received Christmas gifts,” said Leanne Reihana, Manager at Platform Youth Services.

Well, stranger things have happened, and singlehandedly raising global GDP should be a piece of cake for a man who has brow-beaten ‘celebrities’ into achieving business success on his reality TV show, ‘Celebrity Apprentice’.

I even read recently that Dr Harry Dent, the economic equivalent of “Wrongway” Feldman, reversed his December forecast of impending economic doom to one of strong economic and investment market gains in the year ahead.

Although Dent’s predictive powers are ranked alongside the record company executives who turned down the Beatles, if current market optimism has enveloped even him, then we must certainly be in for a nice upward trajectory well into next year.

Then again, he is not referred to as “Wrongway’ for nothing, is he?

We can only hope the rest of the world’s governments will be following the same script as “the Donald”, and we move into a prolonged period of peace, prosperity and progress across the globe.

If nothing else, the year 2017 is set to be a particularly interesting one in both the financial markets and the political arena.

Well here we are at the start of a brand spanking New Year.

We certainly finished last year on a particularly high note, at least from a financial markets perspective.

Donald Trump is yet to be inaugurated, but he certainly lit up equity markets across the globe. They have really taken a shine to him, particularly in the US where the new-found investment exuberance has the Dow Jones index pushing into record territory.

And add to this our own property boom, coupled

hristmas is over for another year. And with it came another opportunity for us all to experience a variety of customer service examples.

One of the best in my Christmas travels was at my local fruit and vegetable shop. On Christmas Eve, I arrived late in the morning to a full carpark, expecting to find chaos inside. Instead, I found numerous staff topping up every item as soon as it appeared low. Each checkout had two staff: one to scan the items, one to pack the bags. All staff were keeping a keen watch on customers, calling them over to checkouts and ensuring everyone received assistance where they needed it.

On the other end of the customer service spectrum was my visit to a large department store. After scanning my fragile Christmas decorations, the staff member asked if I needed them wrapped in paper. I indicated that I did, and he gave an audible sigh, and proceeded to wrap the first decoration.

A few minutes later, as a line of customers grew longer behind me, other staff

members came to the counter asking if he needed help. He said ‘No, I’m OK’, as he struggled to wrap and tape my items, and as the line behind me got longer. The other staff members left and the customers behind me got more exasperated.

Busy and stressful periods bring out the true colours of any business. In the first example above, it was apparent that my local fruit shop had fully prepared for a very busy day. Their primary focus was on their customers and they had processes in place to ensure all our needs were met.

The large department store on the other hand, were far less customerfocused. The staff members I observed were far more concerned with their tasks than with the comfort of customers. Their responses to situations were reactive rather than proactive, and they seemed to lack the capacity to respond to needs.

A business that can look after its customers, and pre-empt difficult situations, will reap loyalty and raving fans for their efforts.

ow are your 2017 New Year’s resolutions going? Many people don’t last until the end of January, so how can we turn resolutions into a success? By implementing SMART goals and action plans!

When setting your business goals it is a good idea for a small business owner to first consider their family and lifestyle goals, and the time they have to run a business and live life.

Conflicts can lead to a feeling of disappointment in all areas of life.

Know your ‘why’, it can get you through tough times.

For goals to be SMART they should be: S – Specific, significant, simple to understand Setting a goal to make more money is weak, as $1 more in 12 months would be a technical success, when we may have intended to double profit in six months.

M – Measurable, meaningful, motivational Without the right measure how will we know if we meet our goal? For instance, going to the gym three times a week is measurable, but is it the right measure?

Ask, what would it look like if I achieved that (remember going doesn’t mean doing!)? Consider creating scales if there is no obvious numerical measure.

A – Achievable, agreed, action-oriented Although it is beneficial to set at least one ‘WAG’ (wildly audacious goal) as they lead to the biggest changes in our lives, goals ultimately need to be achievable.

A WAG for a non-runner may be to run a specific marathon in two years. It may be achievable, but only with an action plan to support it.

R – Realistic, results-oriented As you can see by the meanings, this links to the A eg achievable and resultsoriented versus action-oriented and realistic.

T – Time-constrained, timely Set deadlines and include both some short and long term goals.

Once you’ve created SMART goals check to make sure they don’t conflict with your personal goals, and combined are a stretch but are achievable.

Set priorities, sub goals and action plans to achieve.

017 will see Penrith Musical Comedy Company (PMCC) embracing something old and something new.

The upcoming season will feature the return of the hit musical ‘Chicago’ in May, along with a new direction for the company when they take on the drama ‘Blood Brothers’ in September.

It’s been more than 13 years since PMCC performed ‘Chicago’ and the company’s President Grant Jones (pictured with Annastasia Denton) says it’s been a long wait for it to return.

“It’s pretty exciting because we’ve been asking for many years and then luckily for us they’ve allowed the rights for a limited time,” he said.

“We were the last company in the Sydney region to be allowed to do it before it went off community theatre rights and they’ve only just allowed it again for 2017.”

Though many people would only have experienced the story of murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly through the 2002 movie remake, Grant feels the film doesn’t really live up to the quality of the stage musical.

“The musical’s fantastic, the movie’s not,” he laughed.

“The movie didn’t do the musical justice. It’s such a fantastic show, everyone knows the songs from it, there’s some very iconic songs in the show, it’s funny and it’s sentimental at times.”

While ‘Chicago’ is a PMCC classic, the second half of the year will see the company taking on their most unique project yet.

‘Blood Brothers’ is the story of a woman who surrenders one of her newborn twins to her childless employer who is desperate to be a mother.

She raises the boy as her own but as the pair grow up their lives start to intertwine and the truth of their connection unfolds.

“We’ve shocked a few people because

‘Blood Brothers’ is by no means a show that we would normally produce,” Grant said.

“It’s more of a drama and I think the best way to describe it is that it is a musical but it’s more story driven than music driven.”

PMCC is hoping the change of direction will connect with audiences, and introduce new people to the theatre.

“It’s a touching show and I guess any mother that comes to see it will feel the pain and the anguish that this mother goes through having to give up a child,” Grant said.

Summer of tragedy reminds us all to be more vigilant The bright and happy summer we were hoping for has turned to tragedy with a high number of drownings, but we can all play a part in fixing it...

I had wanted to begin this, my first column back for 2017, with an upbeat ‘Happy New Year’, but after the events of the past few weeks it just doesn’t seem appropriate.

It has been anything but a happy time for the families of the 21 people who have drowned since December 19. That’s three to four times more than usual over the Christmas and New Year period, and almost as many water deaths as car fatalities. Some are calling it a drowning epidemic.

The worst thing is, so many of these tragedies are preventable. From toddlers, including a twin boy and girl from the same family, to teenagers and grown adults, factors such as unlatched gates, unfenced ponds, swimming alone and alcohol consumption all have played their part.

Even more frightening is the fact that, in some of the deaths reported, there have been no obvious risk factors at play.

Fences and gates were safety compliant and closed, there was nothing to be

climbed near the fence, however the child still made it into the pool and lost their life.

It can happen to any of us. On Christmas Eve, my two-year-old son somehow managed to get his back float off, and was standing on the edge of the pool, about to jump in, when I saw him. Adults were all around, just metres away, chatting, but no one was looking directly at my toddler. Thank goodness I noticed, but with a house full of guests, I could have just as easily been distracted for the next two minutes, and the splash may not have been heard by anyone amongst the chatter and music... it just doesn’t bear thinking about.

My point is, no one is immune, and we all have to be vigilant. Which is where the layers of protection come in, so if one layer fails, hopefully the next will be the safety net that prevents a tragedy. Fence the pool, always shut the gate, teach your kids to swim from a young age, ensure active adult supervision, and learn CPR, just in case the worst does happen.

Michael Ilinsky, Royal Life Saving NSW spokesman, said in a recent interview with the ABC that it has been a disastrous summer. “It is definitely the season of distractions — the knock at the door, the ringing phone, other children crying out for assistance; they are the things that take our attention away from backyard swimming pools,” he said.

Justin Scarr from Royal Life Saving has a timely warning for us all, saying, “There’s an incredibly tragic risk zone at the beginning of January when people are returning to work after they’ve been in the pool with their kids all summer. Remove pool toys and make sure the gate is working. If you have a portable swimming pool, it’s a good time to pack that away.”

At the time of writing, we have managed not to have the tragedy of drowning touch our local community this summer, and I truly hope that we can continue to heed the warnings and work together.

A firm heel counter This is important because the heel acts as the support of the foot and must be held in a stable position so that it does not lean in or out too much, possibly leading to pain and postural problems.

If you can easily press in the sides of the heel, it is not providing enough support.

Fastening mechanism It is important to have laces or other fastening such as Velcro to hold the foot in place so it does not slip forward and cause the toes to scrunch and claw.

This damages the front of the foot and can lead to the development of hammertoes (where the toes buckle) and clawed toes, which can become permanent.

Flexibility Soles should be flexible, but only at the ball of the foot, not at the mid-point, and with sufficient cushioning.

The sole should not be rigid, but nor should you be able to roll it up into a ball or bend it in half.

Good Quality Material A good quality shoe is made from a

strong rubber sole, good cushioning for comfort, and leather upper for support and longevity.

Leather is a breathable and waterresistant material, which is important for active, sweaty feet.

They are an investment for good foot health even if children outgrow them quickly.

Correct Sizing Don’t be tempted to buy shoes that are too big in order to allow your children to ‘grow into’.

Shoes that are too big wear out more quickly.

Your child will drag the shoes along the ground causing the soles to wear thin.

Consequently, you will likely end up paying for new school shoes sooner than if you were to buy the correct sized shoes in the first place.

Also, always have shoes fitted to both length AND width.

Finding the right outfit to match your baby bump

I am lucky enough to be experiencing the most magical time, being an expectant mother at nine months pregnant!

One thing that I have noticed is the struggle with what to wear!

Maternity fashion is such a tricky one.

Do you want to look upbeat and polished in a nice dress and heels like you don’t have gigantic swollen ankles?

Or do you think about accepting defeat, the reality of not being able to walk for a few metres before that sore back kicks in, opting for track pants and a baggy t-shirt?

I have found that it takes a bit of extra effort to pull together pieces but you can definitely be comfortable and stylish at the same time!

If you have a social event coming up and you want to dress the bump, look out for nude and subtle tones in stretchy dresses.

Go for a midi length, this allows extra material to cover the bump and assure you won’t have to keep pulling it down.

Popovic was visibly upset on the sideline after replays showed officials failed to award a penalty for a certain hand ball in the first half.

It would have given the Wanderers a 1-0 lead and in a tight contest, could have been enough for the side to secure victory in front of more than 40,000 fans at Allianz Stadium.

In the end, the match finished in a scoreless draw.

“It was a penalty. It was clear, it doesn’t get clearer than that,” Popovic said post-match.

“The deflection was so clear. It’s a tight game, it’s a derby, that changes the game.”

Away from the refereeing dramas, the Wanderers were much better on the field than they have been in recent weeks, particularly in defence. It was the first time the Wanderers have had a clean sheet this season.
