lue Mountains City Council has started to make plans for the future of Lawson Golf Course.

The golf course was closed by the Council in April 2004 because of changes in community needs and the cost of maintenance to the site.

Now, its future is back on the agenda.

“I am pleased that Council has responded to my call for the future of the former Lawson Golf Course to be placed back on the table for discussion,” said Councillor Romola Hollywood.

“Council’s 2016-2017 Budget has been amended so that we can commence the master planning process, in consultation with the community, for this important community land.”

As Crown Land owned by the NSW Government the property is held in trust for recreational purposes to be managed by Council and to date is used as a 24 hour off-leash dog park.

In 2007, Council conducted extensive consultation with the community on options for the future use and development of the Lawson site, and options for how this could be funded.

This process was stalled because of the Crown Lands review and in the absence of a funding agreement with the NSW Government to allow for the development of community and recreational facilities on the land.

“I look forward to hearing from the community what they would like to see on the former Lawson Golf Course,” said Councillor Chris Van der Kley.

“It is important to get it right for such an important site in the mid-Mountains.”

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in the Blue Mountains last Thursday.

About 10.45am on Thursday, July 21, police and emergency services responded to reports of a car and truck crash on the Great Western Highway at Blackheath.

A man driving the car, aged in his 70s, was trapped for a short time but died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was taken by NSW Ambulance Paramedics to Katoomba Hospital for further medical checks.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are underway and a crime scene was established.

The Great Western Highway was closed for several hours.

New EIS by the end of the year Templeman says government is missing the public’s point on airport ERIN MAMO

esidents of the Blue Mountains can expect to have some more concrete answers about the development of the Western Sydney Airport by the end of the year when the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is released.

Last week the new Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, appeared on breakfast radio to talk about the airport, not long after he had been sworn into the new cabinet.

Mr Fletcher spoke about why the Government thinks an airport in the west is crucial to the livability of people in western Sydney.

“It’s very important that our cities be as liveable as possible, that we can get around quickly and efficiently, that they’re as productive as possible and of course infrastructure is key to that,” Mr Fletcher told the ABC. Mr Fletcher reminded listeners that a single point merge over Blaxland will not be proceeding as first suggested in the original EIS. Last October the Government released the draft EIS for review and comment.

at Badgerys Creek and the surrounding area.

The Government received over 5000 submissions from the public and are now reviewing the community’s feedback.

According to Mr Fletcher the final EIS will be issued later this year and then things like flight and route planning will begin.

When asked if he accepts the idea that perhaps there has been some taking for granted of the people from western Sydney by the Government, Mr Fletcher was adamant that the airport was needed.

“It is incumbent on the Government to be delivering the infrastructure that western Sydney needs so that people have the connectivity that they need,” he said.

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, believes that the Government is missing the message from the election results in western Sydney.

“The Government lost not only Macquarie but every Liberal seat in the vicinity of the airport,” Ms Templeman said.

“That’s got to tell them that we are not going to sit back quietly and let them proceed with an airport built on a flawed EIS, which doesn’t take into account

s somebody who writes 50-odd opinion columns a year, I understand that criticism, the odd abuse-laden letter and angry phone calls come as part of the territory.

Different opinions are at the crux of most constructive arguments whether it be about politics, sport, entertainment or the general news cycle.

But enraged criticism of somebody just for expressing their view is something I will never understand.

I’m not saying I agree with Sonia Kruger’s comments on Channel Nine last week that Muslim immigration into Australia should be banned, but why has expressing her opinion on – wait for it – an opinion panel, attracted so much angst?

It seems to have become commonplace in the Australian media that if anyone expresses an opinion outside of the accepted politically correct view, they’re heavily criticised and attacked.

Kruger’s comments were the lead story on The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph and Sydney Morning Herald websites last Monday, feeding the media’s obsession with reporting on itself.

The suggestion that she “courted controversy” (SMH) is ridiculous. She gave her view on a panel that asks for opinions. How dare she not conform to the pretty, safe and flowery answers.

Her response on social media last Monday afternoon in the face of some fairly hefty criticism was defiant and should be applauded.

“I believe it’s vital in a democratic society to be able to discuss these issues without automatically being labelled racist,” she said.

Too often the response to comments like Kruger’s is hypocritical in that it desperately attempts to label the writer or speaker racist when in reality they’re having an opinion based on their true feelings, fears and concerns which may actually have some legitimacy.

Maybe I’m just the ultimate Devil’s advocate but the old adage that there’s two sides to every story generally rings true on most social issues.

Kruger’s desire to stop Muslim immigration into Australia may indeed be a step too far, but she has every right to have that view and express her opinion, particularly in the wake of yet more terror atrocities.

Many of the comments about Sonia Kruger I’ve read from my own friends on Facebook, and others across social media, have been hate-filled, disgraceful and unrepeatable.

Social media has also been filled with

“#prayfornice” over the past week, but we eventually need to realise that God isn’t going to fix this.

Given the enormity and complexity of terrorism around the world, expressing a view on how best to combat it should not be howled down in criticism.

It’s troubling that an issue like this can’t be discussed without it descending into name calling, labelling and attempts to bring individuals down.

The days of having an opinion outside of the politically correct box seem to be numbered, if they’re not over already.

And I feel we’ll be all the poorer for it.

And another thing...

Leaving Tony Abbott out of his newly announced ministry could well turn out to be a dangerous move from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

With a reduced talent pool to pull from and Abbott’s experience in senior roles, it seemed an obvious olive branch to extend in an effort to show solidarity within the Liberal Party.

Turnbull rejected that path, instead allowing the experience of Abbott to waste away on the back bench.

The Liberals may well have limped back into government but the next three years loom as a difficult time in the Australian Parliament.

Behind the scenes, party strategists will be desperately trying to work out how they can reclaim vital seats such as Macquarie come 2019.

The first step is installing a proactive Liberal voice in Macquarie almost immediately, otherwise much of what Turnbull says over the next three years will fall on deaf ears.

t’s time for the kids of Blaxland to have some fun now new play equipment has been installed at Blaxland Oval Park.

Blue Mountains City Council recently installed the new equipment which includes custom-built scaling walls, a spider net, banister slide and a nest seat swing.

“It’s a pleasure to see local children enjoying the new and improved playground,” said Mayor, Mark Greenhill.

“The new play equipment meets the community vision for the Blaxland Oval precinct which includes partial wheelchair access; reuse of the existing spinner and swings; and complements the retained equipment for younger children.”

Blaxland Oval Park is well utilised by the local community and children of families visiting Blaxland Oval for sporting events. The new playground equipment has a combination of soft fall mulch and rubber soft fall pads for underlay.

The new equipment has been chosen to suit the demographic of the local community and to be age-appropriate for the range of ages of children using the park.

funded by the special rate variation that have been brought forward to improve services sooner rather than later to meet community needs,” Cr Greenhill said.

Blaxland Oval is one of a number of playgrounds across the city upgraded by Council in the last year.

In recent months Council has conducted comprehensive research and community consultation on open space areas.

The rapid popularity of the Pokemon Go mobile phone app has motivated masses of people to search public spaces for the Pokemon creatures, who live in a virtual world only available through the screen of a smart device.

While the game has encouraged people to head outdoors and become active, its use has also prompted a reminder to play it safe.

NRMA CEO Rohan Lund said he was impressed with how Pokemon Go encouraged families outdoors together.

“I spent the weekend with my kids hunting for Pokemons as a family around our local neighbourhood and I know how much fun it can be,” he said.

“But it also made me realise just how alert hunters have to be of their surroundings, so they don’t break the law and also so they don’t hurt themselves.”

Mr Lund said all road users held the responsibility to play it safe.

“Pedestrian deaths on NSW roads are up 44 per cent so far this year compared with 2015, and up by 50 per cent for the past 12 months compared with the same time last year,” Mr Lund said.

“If a pedestrian is concentrating on their screen and not where they are going, they are immediately at a much higher risk of a potentially horrific injury.”

Taking care of their own backyard Local students to get their hands dirty as part of Schools Tree Day

apstone Public School will again take part in Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day on Friday, July 29.

Each year more than 2,500 schools get involved in Australia’s biggest community tree-planting and nature care event where students have the opportunity to plant and care for the seedlings as they grow.

Assistant Principal at Lapstone Public, Paula Bonnett, said the school has always had a close affiliation with nature and the environment.

“Being a school that backs onto bushland, many of the kids have grown up around this kind of environment so we are very aware of taking care of nature and plant life,” Ms Bonnett said.

“I think the children know how lucky they are to be surrounded by nature each day.”

The school will plant a mix of 11 trees and shrubs on July 29, one for each class.

After that special eco-rangers – students who already help with composting and gardening around the school – will keep an eye on the new plants and shrubs.

Bowel cancer prevention charity, the Jodi Lee Foundation, is calling for further measures to be taken to raise awareness of bowel cancer, a largely preventable disease, after figures released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) showed participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) has increased by only one per cent on the previous report.

The 2016 monitoring report shows just 37 per cent of people invited to participate in the NBCSP between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014 undertook screening.

“We know much more needs to be done to increase awareness of bowel cancer and encourage eligible Australians to screen using the simple at home test,” said Jodi Lee Foundation Founder and CEO, Nick Lee.

In the book she talks about her son James who in 2011 was unexpectedly diagnosed with a severe form of brain cancer at just 21-years-old.

The doctors said he would be dead within six months, but incredibly he is still alive today.

Lisa also tells the story of October 17, 2013, the day the artist was at home painting when a devastating bushfire roared up through the gully behind her property and surrounded her home within minutes.

Lisa was trapped inside her home, with fire all around her.

Windows started smashing and thick black smoke began to fill each room of the home that she had lived in for years.

Lisa hopped in a cold bath of water, fully

clothed and covered her mouth with a wet towel waiting to be rescued.

One hour into the ordeal and Lisa was rescued by three firemen.

Lisa thought she would die that day and while she came very close to it, she managed to live to tell the story.

For a long time after the fires Lisa lived with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Depression.

Lisa believes her PTSD may have been building when her son got sick in 2011, but didn’t actually surface until she was trapped in her home in 2013.

Now, Lisa wants to tell her story so that she can help other people who may be experiencing something similar.

“I find it therapeutic to talk about some of the things I have been through recently,” she said.

“If it can help even just one person going through a similar thing and assure them that they can get through it, then my job is done.”

Major crash A huge crash closed lanes of the Great Western Highway at Springwood last Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the crash involving two trucks, a mini bus and a car just after 12pm.

The trapped driver of the rear truck was rescued by emergency crews.

10 people were assessed by ambulance paramedics with only one person, the driver of one of the trucks, requiring further treatment.

He was taken by road ambulance to Nepean Hospital.

Fire hazmat crews worked to clean up a large diesel spill from one of the truck’s split tanks.

Contra-flows were put in place and traffic was extensively delayed during the afternoon.

Driving workshops Teaching a young person to drive can be a daunting task and they’re the first to tell us they know it all. But on our roads they can be our most vulnerable road users.

Blue Mountains City Council, in conjunction with the NSW Roads and Maritime Service, are offering two free workshops for parents and carers who are teaching a young person to drive.

These workshops are an excellent way to get practical advice on how to help learner drivers become safer drivers.

Sessions will be held at Katoomba on Saturday, August 13 and Springwood on Saturday, August 27.

Club brings community together LGBTIQ community has a new location to meet, chat and socialise ERIN MAMO

here’s a new place in town where the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) community can meet.

The Rainbow Coffee Club at Lawson is a place where the LGBTIQ community in the Blue Mountains can come together to socialise and make new friends.

Founders, Kevin Hardwick and his partner Glen Williams, started the club recently because they felt there was a need to offer a service in the Blue Mountains where the community can come together during the day.

“There are some other services in the Mountains that organise events for our community but they are all at night time,” Mr Hardwick said.

“We felt there was a need to offer something as an alternative that is during the day where people can come for a chat and a cup of tea and to meet new friends or people they may have met before.

“We also wanted another option for people like students, the elderly, pensioners, the unemployed, shift workers and those with flexible working hours who cannot make it to events that are on at night.”

“Once the weather warms up we plan to have guest speakers on subjects of interest and screenings of short films,” he said.

At 67, Mr Hardwick has lived in Lawson for over 40 years with his long term partner.

Now a retiree he devotes a lot of his time to the LGBTIQ community and is a

Co-Convenor for PinkMountains, which is a popular LGBTIQ online community information guide that advertises local resources, events and businesses.

The Rainbow Coffee Club meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 10am to 12pm at the Mountains Community Resource Centre in Lawson.

Founders ask that people who wish to come along give a gold coin donation to help cover the cost of tea, coffee and cake at the events.

This week I thought I’d run through some of the lesser known cuisines on the Australian dining scene.

With a range of delicious side dishes including kimchi, which is made from fermented seasoned vegetables, and the fun of cooking meat on a grill in the middle of the table it’s not hard to see why so many diners are embracing this cuisine.

One of the most popular dishes in Korean cuisine is bulgogi, thinly sliced beef marinated in a soy based sauce.

Vietnamese Similar to its southeast Asian neighbours Vietnamese cuisine features a balance of sweet, spicy, salty and sour flavours.

Vegetables, salad and herbs feature prominently on the menu making this cuisine fresh and nutritious.

Dishes tend to vary from north to south Vietnam with each area bringing their own specialties to the table.

You really can’t go past a big bowl of pho, a noodle soup that is full of flavour and perfect for winter.

Ethiopian Still very much in its infancy on the dining scene, cuisine from African nations such as Ethiopia is a great option if you want to widen your dining borders.

Ethiopian cuisine offers a selection of meat and vegetarian stews, known as wats served alongside traditional sourdough flat bread known as injera. The injera is used as a utensil to enjoy the delicious wats.

There’s plenty of spice for those who like their meals hot, and community is a big part of the dining experience in Ethiopia.

Try everything! With most Australians being unfamiliar with Ethiopian cuisine it’s worth trying as many different dishes as possible.

“DIGS FOR DINGOES” (Sydney Dingo Rescue) is a sub-project of Sydney Fox Rescue. As well as working to assist captive born dingoes (ex-pets) to find new homes, “Digs for Dingoes” also exists to advocate for, and assist wild-born dingoes who are unfairly targeted, and slaughtered in their thousands by the Australian Government.

Each year due to wide spread baiting, trapping and hunting hundreds if not thousands of dingo pups are left orphaned and in need of assistance. These pups are often left to starve. In 2016 we have began to expand our program to begin working directly with rural and remote wildlife rescuers and community leaders both to support rescue groups on the ground and to bring orphaned and injured dingo pups and juveniles to Sydney for socialising, training and rehoming.

markets is near on impossible. It can also be used as a form of verbal salve, applied to a nervous investor to calm their ire during any sudden volatility in markets.

The phrase is usually accompanied with the additional “and I can assure you, over time, the market will certainly move higher, so don’t worry” dutifully recited to dispel any remain-

ing investor uncertainty. So what is the problem? Well the “time in” phrase represents a type of quasi advice that sounds good but really means nothing.

It’s more like an advertising slogan than scholarship.

Let’s look at some global market indices. Take Japan’s Nikkei index; in 1990 it was just under 40,000 – today, the same index languishes at 16,600. So over a 26 year period the Japanese market has not even reached 50 per cent of its 1990 value.

How much time do I need to invest? What about the Australian market? In 2007 the index hit 6,754, currently it sits at 5,500, some nine years later. If you had invested in an index fund back then, you would still be under water.

Investment markets, whether they are property, shares or cash, have a distinctly cyclical nature, and it certainly doesn’t require the services of Nostradamus, to determine when a suitable entry point is present or not. Timing is most certainly not about picking the top, or bottom of a market, that is impossible. Rather it is the understanding and acknowledgment of when it is a reasonable time to invest in certain assets and just as importantly, when it is not. the right time.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

So many sounds

ith a resume t h a t includes r o l e s s u c h as the sound of Michael J Fox’s feet in the Moonwalk scene of ‘Back to the Future Part III’ it’s clear that Michael Winslow’s career has been anything but ordinary.

While audiences would most likely know him as Larvell Jones from the ‘Police Academy’ films, Michael – aka the man with 10,000 sound effects – has worked in all areas of the entertainment industry; from film to video games and music, he has added his skill with sound to a long list of projects.

Chatting to Michael isn’t your usual interview experience. Across the course of our 15 minute phone call several different characters join us including an Australian mechanic and the Pokemon character Pikachu.

It’s exactly what audiences can expect from Michael’s live shows, which feature a mix of comedy, impersonations, sound effects, beat boxing and storytelling.

“I can assure you it’s not going to be just a microphone and a stand and an empty stage,” he laughed.

“We’re going to make a lot of noise. It’s not just a stand-up show, we have a lot of music because I’m a Louis Armstrong fan, I’m a Led Zeppelin fan, I’m a hip hop fan, I listen to everything so my environment becomes a lot of what I hear.

“Every night when I do shows I also teach people how to do their own noises, so people come up to me now and offer me their sounds and it ends up changing my shows.

“It’s great because everyone makes noises, everybody does.”

Those noises that Michael speaks of first appeared in his comedy shows in the 80s and then went on to feature in films like ‘Terminator’ and ‘Spaceballs’.

He’s also done sound effects for video games like ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’, has appeared as himself on ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy’, and has even worked with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

“They had me put the sound to a Charlie Chaplin movie while the orchestra played the score in front of an audience,” Michael explained.

“It wore me out but I was so happy to do that.”

Michael’s passion for creating iconic sounds and noises started when he was a kid and has helped sustain a decadeslong career.

“Things that I thought I would get bullied for at school they ended up paying me for,” Michael laughed.

“You’d be surprised the stuff people ask you to do.”

But of course it’s the ‘Police Academy’ franchise that has become his most wellknown role.

“It’s been a great career gift for me and I’m just hoping that there continues to be better days ahead of me than behind me,” he laughed.

To Michael a career in sound is an exploration in the way humans communicate, though he does admit there can be some

pitfalls to being able to replicate sounds so well.

“One thing I did figure out is that you should try not to make sounds in front of animals because if it’s really good they’ll bite you,” he laughed.

ĂŠ The Madden brothers, Joel and Benji, could be the latest exits from ‘The Voice Australia’. The pair aren’t yet committing to another season next year, with the revival of Good Charlotte their immediate priority. Earlier this month, fellow coach Jessie J announced she wouldn’t be back in 2017. Meanwhile, the new single by recent ‘The Voice Australia’ winner Alfie Acurie, ‘Cruel’, has bombed beyond belief and is already on its way out of the charts.

No local broadcast details for the new version have been announced. ĂŠ The new series of ‘The Bachelor Australia’ will premiere on Wednesday, July 27 at 7.30pm on Channel Ten. ĂŠ Lastly, the X-Men are heading from the big screen to the small screen with FOX developing an action-adventure series. Queenslander!

O

ne night at a dinner with colleagues in Victoria back in the mid-1990s, Queensland businessman Terry Morris mentioned how he’d recently enjoyed a great wine from Queensland’s Granite Belt – and was almost laughed out of the room amid cries of there being “no such thing as a great wine from Queensland”.

It was the proverbial red rag, and on returning home the entrepreneurial Terry immediately searched that Granite Belt, bought a substantial parcel of land, and established vineyards and a winery that are today not just amongst the most successful in Queensland, but indeed in Australia.

Terry named his venture Sirromet Wines and in 2000 launched his first reds and whites out of this cool-climate region in high country three hours south-west of Brisbane.

The rest is history… and guess who’s laughing now?

Particularly rewarding is his 2013 Sirromet Signature Collection Chardonnay, a must-have for Chardy buffs that’s beautifully rich-bodied with creamy green apple and pear flavours, suggestions of cashew paste and ripe rock-melon, and a finishing touch of lime acidity.

At $35 it’s a perfect pairing with steamed or grilled fish, or a winter’s chicken pot pie.

One to note: It’s over half a century now since winemakers in the Clare Valley started putting together a blend of 70 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 per cent Malbec, one that as the Valley’s Tim Adams says has come to represent for many serious wine lovers the “Holy Grail” of Clare red wine production.

Indeed some of the greater vintages have seen the style attain almost mythical status, with Tim Adams’ own justreleased 2012 blend an absolute ripper.

NSW team falls just short of major win p.24 ERIN MAMO

awson Bowling Club is set to compete at the NSW State Pennant Flag Championships.

Both the men’s grade 7 team and the women’s grade 2 team will be competing this year to take out the flag.

Christine Wright from the Women’s Bowling Club said the teams are very excited to play in the competition.

“Both the men’s and women’s teams are looking forward to the challenge of playing other teams from all over the state,” said Ms Wright.

The Flag Championships is an annual event that sees the best 16 lawn bowls teams from all over NSW come together to battle it out for the State Pennant Flag.

The 16 teams who make it to the finals have all competed and won against local teams in their districts and then at a zone and regional level.

This will be the third time the men’s team will compete at a state level, having won the competition the last two years in a row.

While the women made it into the championships last year, they are yet to have a win.

Chasing the Flag Teams from Lawson Bowling Club will chase glory at major Championship events

The men’s team will play four games over July 30 and 31 in Kingscliff.

If they make it to the final they will play again on August 1.

The women’s team will head to Berry on August 15 for their competition.

If either of the Lawson teams win their competitions they will be awarded with a State Medal and the State Pennant Flag which will be kept proudly at the Bowling Club.

“If we win, we plan to hang the flag on our flagpole and raise it for special occasions,” said Ms Wright.

Lawn bowls is open to all ages and sees some players as young as 14 and 15 getting in on the action.

Good luck to both of the Mountains teams in the coming weeks.

Pride remains despite loss he NSW Under 16 Metropolitan Girls basketball team has finished as runners-up at the recent Australian under 16’s Junior Basketball Championship.

15-year-old Springwood local, Meg Jefferson, was one of 10 young girls selected from across the state to represent NSW in the national finals.

Held in Victoria, the Championships are an eight day tournament that sees 14 teams come together from across the country.

“We came into the tournament thinking we were the underdogs, coming out of last year’s losses,” Jefferson said.

“We lost the first two games we played, making our chances to get into the finals slim.”

By day three the NSW team took out their first win against WA Country 61 to 29.

They then went on to win in their quarter final on day six and semi final on day seven, getting them through to the gold medal match on day eight against Victoria Metro.

“The final game was physically hard and we were all exhausted by the end and a little disappointed about how close we were to actually winning,” Jefferson said.
