Push to re-open Katoomba Airfield ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains could have even more aircraft in its skies after Council agreed to look into the feasibility of re-opening Katoomba Airfield.

Labor Councillor Don McGregor tabled a motion asking Council to consider re-opening the airstrip on Grand Canyon Road in Medlow Bath, for emergency use only.

He said there’s been numerous requests for such action to be taken.

“I’ve had representatives from Blue Mountains Aviators Club and various flying schools and air charter companies, based in the central west, asking for this to be considered,” Cr McGregor said.

“In rough country like the Blue Mountains, where there isn’t a lot of open space like other parts of Australia, this is an important facility that should be available.

“The airstrip is the only possible landing field in what is a decidedly inhospitable 45 nautical mile sector.”

Cr McGregor added that the airstrip would only be used in times of emergencies and that operators using the space would have to meet certain strict aviation criteria.

“Angel Flight, Air Ambulance, Care Flight and fire fighting aircraft have all been users of this facility in the past and I

think they should be able to use it again if necessary,” Cr McGregor said.

Fellow Councillor Chris Van der Kley gave his full support to the motion and said the re-opening of the airfield should be considered.

“I think this is an important issue to look into for emergency use only,” Cr Van der Kley said.

Greens Councillor Kerry Brown proposed an amendment to the motion, asking that Council also assess the environmental impacts that could come from re-opening the airfield.

Blue Mountains General Manager Robert Greenwood said now was not the time to undertake such investigations, with further research required.

“We would need to see the report on the feasibility of re-opening the airfield before any further steps were taken, including preparing an Environmental Impact Statement,” he said.

Cr Brown’s amendment was defeated but the original motion was carried unanimously.

Council will now prepare a report on the feasibility of re-opening and reinstating the use of the airfield for emergency use requirements.

Katoomba Airfield was closed in May last year, months after its long-term caretaker, Rod Hay, was tragically killed in a single engine plane crash in nearby scrub.

Debate over plastic bag ban Brown v Hollywood: Pair debate ban of plastic bags at fiery Council meeting ERIN MAMO

reens Councillor Kerry Brown has been knocked back in her attempt to ask supermarket giants in the Blue Mountains to ban plastic bags.

At last week’s meeting, Cr Brown asked Blue Mountains City Council to support the steps the community is already taking in banning plastic bags by writing to local supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles and asking them to trial a temporary ban on plastic bags.

“Australians use and discard 10 million plastic bags a day,” Cr Brown said.

“We are the only local government area in Australia that is a city within a World Heritage Area.

“We should flex our environmental muscles with Coles and Woolworths.”

In the notice of motion Cr Brown put forward, she asked that Council enquire with the supermarket chains as to whether they could trial a 12 month pilot where they encourage shoppers to purchase an environmentally friendly shopping bag and remove plastic bags.

But Labor Councillor Romola Hollywood strongly refused to support the motion.

“This is a State Government matter and I think it’s important that the community is aware who has the power to implement a ban like this.”

After a heated debate, Cr Brown’s motion was defeated.

Cr Hollywood then put forward a foreshadowed motion that proposed writing to the Minister for Environment and the State MP asking them to support and take

action towards implementing a ban.

The foreshadowed motion was carried unanimously.

Cr Brown said Cr Hollywood’s foreshadowed motion was a weak copy of hers, which disregards the community.

“It also removes the advocacy with the supermarkets, as well as expanding Council’s educational role through its existing communications, which was in my original motion,” Cr Brown said.

Drunk driver thrown in jail A drunk driver who left a path of destruction in his wake at Springwood when he attempted to get to another pub has been ordered to do jail time.

Adrian Paul Squires, 53, of Warrimoo, was sentenced to 12 months in jail at Penrith Local Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to a number of offences, including high-range drink driving.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said it was the offender’s “continued determination to keep driving” despite three collisions, as well as a history of drink driving that left her with no other alternative than to send him to prison.

“In my view, the only appropriate penalty is one of imprisonment,” she said.

The court heard Squires was driving along Macquarie Road near the Hawkesbury Road roundabout when he mounted the kerb and crashed into a street sign.

Unperturbed, he kept driving over the overpass only to rear-end the vehicle in front of him before crossing onto the wrong side of the road and crashing into an on-coming car.

When police attended the scene, they found Squires in the process of trying to change one of his tyres that had burst.

When they tried to breathalyse him, he refused, wrestling and kicking out at two constables when they tried to place him under arrest.

He later returned a reading of 0.223 and was charged with ‘refuse breath test’, ‘resist arrest’ and ‘high-range PCA’.

Glenbrook: Vehicle destroys turf at Knapsack Park

Between 5pm on Saturday, June 24 and 8am on Sunday, June 25, someone gained access to Knapsack Park in Glenbrook, with a vehicle and performed ‘donuts’ on the oval, tearing up the turf.

The cost of the damage is estimated to be in the thousands.

Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact Springwood Police Station on 4751 0299.

Katoomba: Teenager bashed with a glass bottle

At some time between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday, June 24, an altercation occurred outside a property on Civic Place, Katoomba, where numerous offenders punched a 16-year-old Hazelbrook male several times.

One of the offenders then struck the victim in the head with a glass bottle, which caused multiple lacerations to the victim’s face.

The victim was taken to Katoomba Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. A crime scene was established at the location where police seized some items.

Katoomba: Man punched in head, loses consciousness

About 1.20am on Sunday, June 25, an altercation occurred in the Harp and Fiddle bar which is part of the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba.

A male offender punched a 33-year-

old man in the head and as a result of that one punch, the 33-year-old victim fell to the ground and immediately lost consciousness.

The victim was conveyed to Katoomba Hospital where he underwent scans.

He was later discharged from hospital suffering from concussion, bruising and swelling.

The offender fled the scene and is currently wanted by police.

He is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 25 to 30 years of age, 180cm tall, skinny build, short trimmed hair, wearing a grey and white check shirt and light coloured pants.

Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact Springwood Police Station on 4751 0299.

Katoomba: Numerous arrests at Winter Magic Festival

The annual Winter Magic Festival was held on Saturday, June 24, and this year saw a significant increase in violent and antisocial behaviour, including violence towards police.

The number of assaults increased threefold compared to 2016, with this year seeing four incidents of ‘assault police’ and/or ‘resist/hinder police’ that were directly related to the festival.

No officers sustained injuries as a result of the assaults but police are reminding the public of the need for the responsible consumption of alcohol and lawful behaviour at highly anticipated events such as Winter Magic.

Outraged Leura locals fight for safety After 25 years of arguing, Leura residents are finally fed up over the safety of busy Railway Parade ERIN MAMO

esidents in Leura have been arguing with Council and the Government for almost 25 years, to have improved road safety measures implemented along Railway Parade.

At the recent Council meeting, Councillor Kerry Brown put forward a notice of motion requesting that something is done about the lack of footpath access along the road and the speed limit, which residents believe is set too high.

“This road is dangerous to both walk and drive on,” Cr Brown said.

“I have been using it for the last 20 years and the safety issues are getting worse and worse.”

Leura resident Michael Maclaurin said he has been fighting with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), who at one point assured him that changes to the speed limit were going ahead, for far too long.

“In 2016, a man from RMS, whose name I remember very well, assured me that he had signed off on the rezoning of Railway Parade all the way to Govett Street,” he said.

“Then nothing happened.”

“We have a number of elderly residents living here, 80-year-old women forced to share the road with vehicles because there’s no footpath for them to walk on,” he said.

Currently, pedestrians walk along the road because, on the north side of Railway Parade, there is a high railway embank-

ment and fence and on the south side there is a narrow shoulder that dips in and out and is covered in overgrown vegetation.

Mr Maclaurin said Council have also been involved with the issue in the past, committing to do something.

“In 2000, Council agreed that pedestrian safety was compromised and a footpath was included in the Capital Works Program, but then later removed,” he said.

“Then, in 2010, Council gave ‘high priority’ to constructing a footpath on Railway Parade from Leura Mall to Murray Street and ‘moderate priority’ for the path to continue to Commonwealth Street, but nothing has been done.”

At the latest Council meeting, Cr Brown’s motion was passed and Council will now write to RMS requesting a speed review of Railway Parade.

Residents in the mid Mountains are doing it the hard way after upgrades to stations fall on deaf ears ERIN MAMO

esidents in the mid Mountains want to know why their train stations have been forgotten about when it comes to accessibility upgrades.

After the recent announcement that planning will start this year on upgrades to Glenbrook Train Station and the completion of upgrades at Wentworth Falls, concerned residents in Lawson, Hazelbrook and Woodford want to know when it is their turn for a new shiney elevator.

Secretary of the Hazelbrook Association, John Crichton, said he and his members started advocating for accessibility upgrades when they heard the story of a Hazelbrook man whose daughter is wheelchair bound but catches a train to work five days a week.

“Each day a local, who is quite known in the community, carries his daughter and her wheelchair up and then down the stairs so that she can get to and from work,” he said.

“The mid Mountains have got to have at least one train station that has wheelchair access.”

“The mid Mountains needs urgent public transport infrastructure investment as communities like Woodford have waited long enough,” Ms Doyle argued.

The NSW Government said Transport Access Program projects are planned and delivered under a prioritisation assessment framework.

When deciding which improvements to deliver they consider factors like current and future patronage; the demographics of customers who use the location; whether important services like hospitals or schools are nearby; and the accessibility of other nearby transport interchanges.

For residents in the mid Mountains you either need to travel down the mountain to Springwood or up the mountain to Wentworth Falls, to find a station with a lift.

A spokesperson from Transport NSW said as of January this year more than half of the stations on the suburban and intercity networks are accessible.

There’s still no news for Lawson, Hazelbrook and Woodford though, with the Transport NSW unable to confirm when these three stations will be upgraded.

Construction is also currently underway at Leura Train Station, to upgrade accessibility, The work includes a new access ramp, stairs and formalised taxi bays.

he 2017 National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) is being celebrated this week until July 9.

As part of the annual week, Blue Mountains City Council, the Aboriginal Advisory Council and the Blue Mountains Aboriginal Culture and Resource Centre are hosting a number of events.

Each year, NAIDOC celebrates and highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture, history and achievements.

The week long events give all Australians the opportunity to come together with Aboriginal communities, providing the chance for the broader community to gain a better understanding and appreciation of local Aboriginal culture.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said NAIDOC week is a vital part of the community calendar.

“For me, respect and recognising the cultural heritage of our first Australians is deeply important,” he said.

“The week provides a time for us to unite and recognise the strength, resilience and importance of Aboriginal culture.”

NAIDOC is being celebrated in the Blue Mountains this week

Yesterday the festivities kicked off with the annual NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

Other activities to look forward to include the Aboriginal Culture Learning Family Workshop on Wednesday, July 5; Aboriginal Community Day in the Gully on Saturday, July 8; and the Tracey Moffatt Art Exhibition at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre from Saturday, July 8.

The year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Our Languages Matter’, which emphasises and celebrates the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity.

A language links Indigenous people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, identity, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

When Europeans arrived in the late 18th century, there were some 250 distinct Indigenous languages being spoken by the various Aboriginal nations across the continent.

Today, only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on.

For years, there have been calls for a Royal Commission into violence and abuse against people with a disability.

In 2014, the ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ report revealed the scale of abuse in institutional care, which eventually prompted the Government to establish a Senate Inquiry in 2015. The inquiry made 30 recommendations including establishing a Royal Commission.

Again this year, ‘Four Corners’ further revealed cases of physical and sexual abuse of people with disabilities, by the very people who are supposed to care for them, and still no Royal Commission It is disappointing that the Turnbull Government has so far turned its back on people with disability, their families, carers and advocates by refusing to support a Royal Commission Disabled People’s Organisations Australia say that people with disability experience significantly higher levels of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation than people without disability They estimate that 90 per cent of women with an intellectual disability have been sexually assaulted in their lives and children with disability are three times more likely to experience abuse than other children.

And to compound the problem, disability advocate groups say that police and lawyers frequently do not investigate and prosecute incidents of abuse as crime, due to people with disability not being recognised as “reliable witnesses�, resulting in people with disability having no mechanism for justice or redress.

This is why we need a Royal Commission into violence and abuse of people with disability.

Only a Royal Commission has the weight, authority and investigative powers to examine the horrific accounts of violence and abuse against people with disability.

Labor is calling on the Turnbull Government to begin the work to establish a Royal Commission into violence and abuse of people with disability immediately.

And if they won’t, Labor will. We will consult widely with the disability community about the terms of reference.

The Mountains has many organisations delivering high quality support and care to people with disabilities.

The voices of people with disability who have been abused must be heard and justice must be delivered.

n a recent episode of the television show ‘Shark Tank’, an entrepreneur appeared before the panel to pitch his idea. It was quite a bold concept and he matched it with a bold amount of investment requested from the ‘sharks’.

At first, the panel were curious about his product and were keen to find out more.

He seemed to be well thought out, and spoke articulately about his business model.

After a short time, his presentation started unravelling. The panellists’ questions revealed that despite initial appearances, the product was still very much in testing stage (despite indications to the contrary). The value of the business was based purely on speculation, not on previous sales or solid market research. In addition, they discovered that in a timeframe of approximately 10 years, he had started up (or been involved in) eight business ventures; and not one of those ventures had been successful. It was no surprise when all five members of the Shark Tank announced that they were ‘out’.

This entrepreneur may have been trustworthy. But unfortunately, for him, there were too many ‘alarm bells’ for the investors, and they were unable to believe in what he was pitching to them. There is a difference between ‘being’ trustworthy and ‘proving’ your trustworthiness.

Although your customers are unlikely to ask you the in-depth and hard-hitting questions asked on ‘Shark Tank’, they will still form opinions about your business based on their interactions (either directly or indirectly). Everything, from your branding, to the end point delivery, gives your customers ‘clues’ about your trustworthiness.

Your branding might entice them to contact you in the first place. But if they experience delays and excuses, or receive inferior products, they are highly likely to distrust you. This may be despite the fact that you are not intentionally providing poor service, and are genuinely very trustworthy.

But if the customer experience doesn’t reflect your values, your honesty and integrity will mean nothing.

ocial Platforms are constantly updating and upgrading to create better user experience. Here are a few recent changes you may have missed and how to take advantage of them.

Facebook Covers Business Pages now have the opportunity to use a 20-90 second video instead of a regular image in the cover photo.

Your cover photo is “prime real estate” when it comes to your Facebook page so make the most of it and create an engaging, eye catching video.

Facebook Stories Similar to Snapchat and Instagram, Facebook now offers the opportunity for its users to upload stories to their Facebook page. It’s starting to look like Instagram, and Facebook are slowly starting to eliminate Snapchat, which can benefit those who use all platforms, meaning less posting work.

Instagram Story Stickers Hashtag and location stickers are available for Instagram stories. This means you and your customers can now tag your business location or hashtag, and viewers

can tap on the stickers to “see location” to see a map or “see hashtag” to view all images connected to that hashtag.

Instagram Story Links You also now have the opportunity to include a link with the ability for viewers to swipe up and be directly taken to your chosen link.

Instagram Story Ads You may have noticed when watching through Instagram stories, a business ad may appear between stories. As a business, you have the opportunity to do this too, and with over 250 million daily users for stories, it’s worth adding it into your marketing strategy. Set up a campaign through your Facebook Ads manager and when selecting placements choose Instagram. You can also still select your audience and other demographics when setting up this campaign.

And as is the tradition with each new financial year, it’s also time to ‘deliver the shoe box to the accountant’. That’s right, it’s tax time again. What could be more exciting than spending countless hours, sorting through pieces of crumpled paper? The great battle between us tax payers and the ATO has always been the definition of an expense. Work expenses are probably the main tax deduction most of us have, and it is therefore very important to get them right to avoid ongoing problems.

So this week I thought was an opportune time to remind ourselves of the obligations

when claiming work-related expenses.

First and foremost, as a seasoned tax person once instilled in me, “there must always be a nexus”. Put simply, a connection must exist between what you spent and how you earn your income.

No connection, no claim.

So a plumber can’t claim for guitar strings just because they practise during their breaks. Or a nurse can’t claim for sunscreen just because they chose to sit outside to eat lunch.

Pretty easy really, but here are a few pointers for when you decide to open up that ‘shoe box’: 1. You actually spent the money and weren’t reimbursed by your employer 2. The money you spent was a work-related expense 3. You have an official record of the expense – such as a receipt, bank statement or diary entry (though in some cases you may not have to show evidence if your total claim for work-related expenses is $300 or less) 4. If the cost was for both work and personal use.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

It’s the music that matters he music industry has its fair share of egos, but Shannon Noll – aka Nollsie – isn’t one of them.

His knockabout bloke personality, and willingness to have a laugh at himself, has helped the ‘Australian Idol’ alumnus embrace his newfound popularity after becoming the subject of Internet memes in recent years.

“As my mum always said, ‘you can’t laugh at anyone else until you can laugh

at yourself’. It’s been great because it’s definitely helped my profile that’s for sure,” he laughed.

After more than a decade in the music industry it’s also given the singer the chance to get his music out to a whole new audience.

“You might get people come to the shows purely because they’ve become aware of me through the memes etc, but when they come to the show I try to put a lot of emphasis into making sure they go away having enjoyed themselves,” Shannon said.

After a busy start to the year with the Red Hot Summer Tour – which featured Aussie greats like John Farnham, James

Reyne and Daryl Braithwaite – there’s no slowing down for Shannon.

Along with filming a new series of the Channel Ten car show ‘Cruise Mode’ – which he co-hosts with former Hi-5 member Charli Robinson – he’s also finishing off his new album in between shows on his current national tour.

Next month will see Shannon heading to our neck of the woods, with a show at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 14.

Fans will get a good mix of music from the post-Australian Idol era through to recent singles ‘Who I Am’ and ‘Southern Sky’.

There’s also likely to be with a few fun covers thrown in for good measure.

“We did ‘Oh Sherrie’ by Steve Perry the other night which was a lot of fun,” Shannon laughed.

“I’ve been thinking about playing that for a while because I love that song, so we put that in the set and it went over really well.”

As for the recent media obsession with that viral ‘shoey’ video, Shannon said it’s made him a little more cautious of how he interacts with fans.

“You’re sort of damned if you do or damned if you don’t which is a bit of a shame,” he said.

Delicious meal that will have everyone singing your praises If you want to get some winter warmth into your kitchen, why not give this Mexican slow cooked beef stew with corn bread dumplings a try?

This week we’ve teamed up with the Dietitians Association of Australia and Jalna to bring you this delicious healthy winter warmer recipe.

Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1kg gravy beef, cut into 3cm pieces • 1 brown onion, finely chopped • 2 carrots finely chopped • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon ground Mexican chilli • 2 x 400g cans baby roma tomatoes • 1 cup salt-reduced beef stock • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1½ tablespoons brown sugar • Jalna Greek Natural Yoghurt, to serve For the cornbread dumplings • 1½ cups wholemeal flour • 1 cup polenta • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1½ cups Jalna Greek Natural Yoghurt • 1 cup grated cheddar

• ½ cup finely chopped coriander • 1 long red chilli, finely chopped Method: 1. Preheat oven to 160˚C or 140˚C fanforce.

2. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large flameproof baking dish over mediumhigh heat. Cook third of beef for 2-3 minutes or until well browned. Set aside. Repeat in two more batches with remaining oil and beef.

3. Heat remaining oil over medium heat.

Cook onion, carrot, celery and garlic,

stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until softened. Add spices and cook until fragrant. Add tomatoes, stock, paste and sugar and stir until combined. Return meat to pan with any juices. Season and bring to the boil.

Cook, covered, in oven for 2½ hours.

4. Increase oven to 200˚C or 180˚C fan-force. Combine all ingredients for dumplings in a large bowl. Season and stir until combined. Dollop heaped spoonfuls of dough over hot stew.

Bake, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes or until dumplings are golden.

y fondest memory of the late, great Murray Tyrrell is of him at an old-fashioned basket press in his family’s Hunter Valley winery, sometime in the mid-1970s, sleeves rolled up to the armpits, hands scooping up red grapes, the juice running down his arms and staining his white shirt.

“Look at that colour,” he enthused.

“This will make a great wine.”

That was well before the family’s involvement in the Heathcote area of central Victoria in the mid-1990s, though Murray was still around to oversee the beginnings of that venture.

The area is certainly a deal cooler than the Hunter Valley and provides viticulturists with a completely different set of problems.

Murray would certainly be pleased with the latest of Tyrrells’ Heathcote reds, which have a steely firmness to them yet also a warmth and generosity of flavour that characterises the region as one of Australia’s best for shiraz.

Wine of the Week Tyrrells 2014 Lunatiq Heathcote Shiraz ($40).

People thought the Tyrrells were crazy for diversifying to Heathcote and hence the name.

I think that the last laugh has been with them because this is a superb red, with whole-bunch fermentation adding a gentle complexity to the wine.

It’s a big wine loaded with plummy, berry character but also with an elegance that seems to set Heathcote apart.

At $40, it deserves to be paired with a special meal or family event.

Local volunteer honoured ocal cricket volunteer David Williams was acknowledged last Thursday for his hard work and achievements at Springwood Cricket Club and Penrith Junior Cricket Association.

Through the 2017 NSW Community Sports Awards, Williams was commended along with five other cricket volunteers at NSW Parliament House.

The annual awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of volunteers to community sport in NSW. Williams was recognised for his commitment to driving girls cricket at the Penrith Junior Cricket Association where he established the U13s Thunder Girls Cricket League, an all female competition that has grown significantly in the past 24 months.

This summer, the league grew from four to six teams and the number of female cricketers increased to the point where the Association can now field a representative team for the first time in years.

“We want girls to know that the days where they were the only girl on an all-male cricket squad are well and truly gone,” Williams said.
