Local women bond over the hardest of circumstances

Pollies team up to fight to keep volunteer organisations funded EMILY NEWTON

he funding for volunteer support services is at risk, but local MPs and volunteer organisations are ready to fight for their fair share of funding.

Minister for Social Service Christian Porter is conducting a redesign of the Strengthening Communities program, which provides the only source of Federal funding for volunteer management and support services.

Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman has joined Member for Lindsay Emma Husar and Leep CEO Cecily Michaels, to ask the Turnbull Government not to turn its back on these vital community programs.

“We are very concerned that the Government will not commit to funding for volunteer management services,” Ms Templeman said.

“These organisations provide vital support to community services that rely on their volunteers – from community sporting groups to disability and aged care services, to emergency response and more.”

Ms Templeman said the Department of Social Services have admitted they are experiencing problems with the proposed changes, saying they are reconsidering their proposal to remove their dedicated

nce every three months, a group of resilient women come together across the Mountains, Penrith and the Hawkesbury regions for support.

At the recent NSW Police Legacy Legatee local area lunch, the women all share a special bond, having all lost someone in the police force.

Pauline Taylor, who lost her husband when she was just 26-years-old, said the meetings form friendships where the women understand one another.

“You’ve all got a common link, we have

husbands that all wore blue uniforms and went to work one day and never came home, or became ill and passed away,” she said.

“Legacy’s motto is ‘we will remember them’, and I tell you what, that’s something that we all live by.”

Legacy supports the widows of police officers from complex issues like accompanying them to court cases, to simply helping to fix broken washing machines.

At the Legatee lunch at Lapstone Hotel last week, NSW Police Legacy Chairman Paul Bousfield said the meetings enabled people to connect with others going through similar circumstances.

She believes this leaves hope that there is a chance it won’t be defunded.

“What we want to do is highlight that it’s only a little bit of money, but it makes a huge difference in having an organisation that can recruit, train volunteers, distribute them and facilitate them,” she said.

The local MPs are imploring the Government to drop these changes and give the sector the certainty they need.

Healthy competition could save lives Police in the Blue Mountains are getting behind the 2017 Emergency Services Blood Challenge EMILY NEWTON

lood has been spilled between local area commands as they battle it out in the 2017 Emergency Services Blood Challenge.

The life saving blood drive aims to help combat the traditional drop-off in blood donor numbers each winter while, at the same time, challenging groups to vie for the highest blood count.

“We’ve got 120 staff, so I’ve been encouraging all staff to donate if they can,” Blue Mountains local area commander Superintendent Darryl Jobson said.

“We don’t mind if we don’t play fair as long as we get the most donations and do the greatest good for the recipients of our donations.”

Behind the competition there is a serious message our emergency services men and women are pushing.

“When we were doing the drive last year, it was on the back of Sergeant Luke Warburton getting shot,” Penrith commander Superintendent Brett McFadden said.

“I think it brings it home because he was perilously close to dying in that incident that occurred up at Nepean Hospital.

“It reminds us of the dangers of the work we do.”

Blood Service spokesperson Ronny Maroun said more than 900 new donors were needed across western Sydney this winter, with many regular donors knocked out by the cold and flu season.

“We are hoping that through the Emergency Services Challenge and the example of these amazing men and women, who save lives on a regular basis through their profession, that more people will be encouraged to donate blood to give others a second chance at life,” he said.

While friendly competition helps get the blood flowing, it’s not about which command wins or loses, because ultimately the community wins.

“No matter what we do, or the trauma that we come across, we know there’s a need for blood,” Superintendent Jobson said.

“Even through it’s competitive with the other commands, the winner really will be the recipients of these donations.

“If we can use the competition and the banter to raise the profile within our ranks to encourage the most donations, that’s what we aim to do.”

Big NBN win for residents in lower half of Mountains he big revelation in the last week was that the Turnbull Government has abandoned its plans to roll out the secondclass NBN from Hazelbrook down, after it has caused so many problems in the upper Blue Mountains.

As I researched a speech on the problems of the NBN, I found that the mid and lower Mountains plans had quietly been changed, so that those areas will now all receive the high quality fibreto-the-curb (FTTC) over the next two years. Previously, people south of the railway line were slated for FTTC, while everyone to the north was due to have the fibre-to-the-node (FTTN), which has been a nightmare.

This is a big win for the whole of the Mountains. It shows the hundreds of complaints are valid, in spite of the fact that the Government and NBN have been in denial about how bad the roll-out has been for Lawson up. This is an admission that the technology is not up to the job.

Since I came to office 11 months ago, my office has advocated on behalf of hundreds of customers with NBN, Telstra and other providers, to try and

get the connection problems sorted, as well as improve the slow speeds, drop outs and intermittent service. It’s been one of the top three issues that we’ve made representations on in the first period of parliament.

And I’ve been highlighting the dangers in rolling the same technology out through the rest of the electorate.

We obviously can’t undo the decision the Abbot/Turnbull Governments made to deliver FTTN to the top of the Mountains.

But with this admission of the inferiority of connecting 21st century fibre technology to a copper wire from the dark ages, the Turnbull Government and the NBN now must look to improve and upgrade the technology so there is fairness in the quality that different people receive.

So the fight continues for the upper Mountains to ensure that NBN delivers FTTN in the best possible way, until we can get them to upgrade it (as they are in New Zealand) to a full broadband service.

Local RFS volunteer up for big award Mt Victoria’s Mina Howard has been nominated for her role as Communication Engagement Officer ERIN MAMO

t Victoria Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer Mina Howard is being recognised for her service to the community as a finalist in the 2017 Rotary NSW Emergency Service Community Awards.

The emergency service awards take place each year, recognising individuals from fire, marine, ambulance and rescue emergency services across the state.

As well as being a rural firefighter, Ms Howard has been nominated as a finalist for her outstanding accomplishments as the Communication Engagement Officer for Blackheath RFS. In 2010, shortly after she took on the role, Ms Howard developed the ‘Heads Up For Fire’ program to assist her local community to get better prepared for a potential fire near their home.

“I basically went out into the community and held 25 street meetings to try and find individuals who wanted to get involved and help roll out the program to all of Blackheath and then Mt Victoria,” Ms Howard said.

“Then it was a matter of working with the volunteers to knock on every door of

every home in the area to find out whether or not residents had a fire plan and encourage and assist them to make one.”

The retired school teacher said she originally got involved with the RFS, which her husband and son were already a part of, to help out with catering.

“Then after the terrible fires in 2009 I felt like I needed to do more,” she said.

Minister for Emergency Services, Troy Grant, said the awards celebrate the outstanding contribution of emergency services workers.

“These awards celebrate the outstanding sacrifice and spirit of so many quiet achievers who tirelessly work to ensure the safety of others in times of disaster,” he said.

“We should never take for granted the work our emergency services staff and volunteers do and it is important to acknowledge the unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond.”

The 24 finalists now in the running will attend an awards night on Friday, August 4 where winners for each service will be announced plus overall winners of the Emergency Service Officer of the Year serving in a volunteer capacity and Emergency Service Officer of the Year serving in a paid capacity awards.

en’s Health Week is on now until Sunday, June 18, and to acknowledge its importance, Mt Riverview Men’s Shed will hold a Men’s Health Expo.

On Saturday, June 17 at Springwood Presbyterian Church, the local men’s community development group said they are hoping to get men together to talk about important issues.

Chairman of the Mt Riverview Men’s Shed, Cameron Phillips, said the Expo is for all men, not just the oldies, to come along and find out more about serious health issues that can occur in males.

“We want to encourage all men to look after themselves a little better,” Mr Phillips said.

“Men are known for ignoring their health and the bottom line is that we want them to be prevention orientated.

“It’s also important for men to look at their family history and medical conditions that they are prone to already.”

The Expo, which will run from 9am until 2pm, will have a number of industry experts on site offering free health checks and advice.

Religious leaders unite More than 100 religious leaders from all major religions in Australia have signed a joint statement calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to legislate for civil marriage equality now.

This joint statement recognises that civil marriage equality is based on the values of love and commitment and is about ensuring every Australian is afforded the same dignity and respect for their committed relationships.

The leaders signing the joint statement want to see Australian marriage law include all Australians, which requires a change to the legal definition of civil marriage to include LGBTI people’s relationships and families.

“The majority of the people of faith in Australia support marriage equality, so it’s important that their voices are heard,” Executive Director of The Equality Campaign, Tiernan Brady said.

“Marriage Equality is about civil marriage and will have no impact on anyone’s faith, religious institution or sacrament. It is about allowing the State to treat every Australian with dignity.”

Co-Chair of Australians for Equality Anna Brown said the recent cross-party Senate Report into Marriage Equality shows how it is possible for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples to marry while providing assurances around the continued protection of religious freedoms.

She said the campaign was promoting some of the greatest human values.

Once upon a time, a husband and wife came to my office. They carried with them a large folder which was filled with papers and assorted documents.

After the perfunctory pleasantries, standard for a new client/adviser meeting, they embarked on a particularly detailed description of their financial position. As I recall, it went something like this.

They had, in addition to owning their home, three investment properties, all of which were negatively geared. A share portfolio

comprising various Governments floats as well as selections from the mining, banking and retail sectors. A varied array of cash investments, some in term deposits and the rest at call. Four superannuation funds and the possibility of another two, presuming they could find the paperwork.

And finally, just for good measure, they also produced

a spreadsheet of their salaries, three years of group certificates and a complete list of their insurance policies.

So, after listening patiently for what seemed like an eternity, my prospective clients finally arrived at the crux of the meeting, and asked: “We just want to know if we are doing the right thing”.

Now, I must say their question was quite a common one, as I was often asked for consideration of someone’s financial situation. But this time it was being asked by a couple who obviously had the ability to amass a formidable asset base. Yet here they were, asking me, if they were doing the right thing?

Didn’t they have even the slightest inkling of why they were investing?

Investing is a strategy rather than a goal. It is used to achieve a predetermined outcome. If there is no desired outcome for the investment then there is no point in going through all the rigmarole and risks associated with doing it.

Always start any investing with a plan.

The great John Lennon once asked: “How can I go forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?”

Investors should be asking themselves this question as well.

ountry music darling Melinda Schneider will pay homage to her musical hero this July when ‘Melinda Schneider Does Doris Day’ heads to the Blue Mountains Theatre.

The show, which has already had a hugely successful capital city tour, will feature timeless hits like ‘Sentimental Journey’, ‘Que Sera, Sera’, ‘Everyone Loves a Lover’, ‘Love Me or Leave Me’ and many more.

Melinda’s first memories of Doris were from the 1953 hit film ‘Calamity Jane’.

“She was such a huge talent, a triple threat as they say – she could sing, dance and act,” Melinda said.

“I thought then she was the best of everything a woman can be and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her.”

Melinda still remembers the joy of first watching ‘Calamity Jane’.

“It didn’t matter to me that the real Calamity Jane was an overweight, alcoholic, genocidal maniac, Doris looked gorgeous and sang like a bird and that was good enough for little Melinda,” she said.

star in her own right, with six Golden Guitars to her name, along with an appearance on Channel Seven’s hit show ‘Dancing with the Stars’.

In a career which began with a stage debut at the age of three, (appearing with her mother, Mary) she has kept her family tradition alive by becoming one of Australia’s most sublime singers and popular live performers. But it is through her assured and accomplished songwriting that she has really discovered her true voice.

In November 2014 Melinda and Beccy Cole collaborated on their number one charting album ‘Great Women Of Country – and The Songs That Made Them’.

I find John’s Edition Noir range particularly interesting because it allows him and Alex, his son and now senior winemaker, to go out on a limb and produce some quite edgy wines, though inevitably ones with elegance and the potential to reward cellaring.

entworth Falls Country Club held a Trivia Night last weekend to raise money to help their youngest golf star.

10-year-old Harry Daniels recently qualified for the Kids Golf Championships in the United States this August.

Little Harry made the World Championships after winning the local qualifying tournament in Sydney a few months ago.

His dad, Tom Daniels, said his son will now compete in the Boys 10s category in Pinehurst, North Carolina, against junior golfers from all around the world.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” Mr Daniels said.

“Harry started playing golf two years ago after we moved closer to the golf club. One day he just asked if he could go to a free clinic that they were running.

“He went along and then watched a video online about the World Championships and asked us if he could start playing golf competitively.

“The next thing we know we receive an email to say he has qualified for the World Championships in America.”

After Harry learned the news that he qualified for the Kids Golf Championships, he wrote to local businesses in Wentworth Falls and Leura asking if they could help.

cal businesses came together, donating prizes and packages which were auctioned off.

One local tradie auctioned himself off at the event, and will now spend a whole day offering free trade services to the lucky winner.

The total amount raised from Harry’s Trivia Night is still being calculated.
