Development

New Katoomba estate taking shape Omnia Health and Fitness will open its doors this Saturday at the Escarpments Estate in Katoomba ERIN MAMO

mnia Health and Fitness, part of the development extravaganza that is being built where the old Katoomba Golf Course once stood, is opening its doors for business this Saturday, July 1.

As part of Escarpments Estate, Katoomba can look forward to having 24 brand new townhouses, a new restaurant, a driving range and a golf pro-shop, which will soon join the health and fitness centre on the site.

Owner of Escarpments Estate, Edward Fernon, said the development will be unique and provide something for everyone in the community.

“I’m very excited to be able to offer a new health and fitness venue as the first part of the development in the Mountains,” he said.

“No matter how old you are or what your level of fitness is, we are really encouraging everyone to get involved and to know that it’s never too late to get fit and healthy.”

Mr Fernon said the new centre will offer a number of differences to many of the gyms that are currently operating in and around the area.

First off, there are no contracts or binding agreements that people need to enter into to use the facility – people can come and go as they please.

In terms of working out, a specialised circuit program will mean that classes run every five minutes and to a customer’s pace rather than having to keep up with others in a scheduled class.

Mr Fernon, who himself competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games in Pentathlon, said the aim for the centre is also to offer an elite training facility to athletics teams and squads.

“Eventually we hope to be able to host athletes who can come out for a week or weekend and train here in the lead up to an event,” he said.

The new driving range is set to open in a few weeks, while the restaurant, which will offer smoked and slow cooked meat, is due to open in October.

Townhouses in Escarpments Estate are currently being sold ‘off the plan’.

The estate will also boast upgraded parklands, cycling trails and walking paths, which are currently very popular with local dog walkers.

Unique concept to get people reading Ethel’s Library in Leura encourages locals to grab a book out of a fence and read to their heart’s content ERIN MAMO

ocal film maker Heath Davis has teamed up with Dymocks and artists from the Blue Mountains to create a street library in Leura.

As of this Saturday, July 1, Ethel’s Library will be open to the community at the former home of English-born author Ethel Turner, who wrote over 40 classic books including the children’s story Seven Little Australians.

Mr Davis said the motive behind the library is to give the community access to some great stories.

“There’s no library in walking distance in Leura,” he said.

“So this is something free that everyone can enjoy.”

Using the library is simple. All you need to do is make your way to ‘Yanalla’ at 4 Balmoral Road, Leura, where a man-made cubby has been built into the home’s fence. You then choose a book you would like to read and simply take it.

When you are done reading the book either return it or donate a new one.

The little library will be open indefinitely at the historic home, and the idea is that people share all of their favourite stories

“My latest film, ‘Book Week’, is a movie about connection, story telling and the community through books and that’s what this library is all about,” Mr Davis said.

Iconic Ethel Turner stories will also be stocked in the library for fans who regularly come from far and wide to see the author’s home.

In celebration of the library, creators are throwing a launch party at the Paragon Café in Katoomba this Friday, June 30 from 7pm.

There will be live music, poetry readings and everyone is encouraged to bring a book to donate to the library.

Tickets are $10 at the door and all money raised on the night will go towards the filming of ‘Book Week’.

‘Book Week’ is the latest film from Mr Davis whose previous release, ‘Broke’, was a huge success in Australia and around the world.

Many scenes from ‘Book Week’ are set to be filmed in and around the Blue Mountains.

The film also features many local acting and behind the scenes talent.

Colour, fun and plenty of sun as huge Party atmosphere as thousands head to Katoomba to celebrate annual festival, with the grand parade TROY DODDS

he biggest event in the Blue Mountains every year lived up to its hype yet again on the weekend, with a huge crowd flocking to the Winter Magic Festival in Katoomba.

The noticeable chill in the air didn’t stop thousands attending the annual event, highlighted by a major parade that travelled through Katoomba Street and Main Street.

The parade featured plenty of fun and colour but some also used it to make a point, with the Western Sydney Airport, mining, coal and the environment in general all getting airplay.

The Winter Magic Festival is a not-forprofit event that is self supporting and is run entirely by community volunteers.

The atmosphere on the weekend proved that the tradition is very much alive in the Mountains, with the Winter Magic Festival seemingly getting bigger and better every year.

Plans are already underway for next year’s Winter Magic Festival, held each year in Katoomba around the time of the winter solstice.

Mountains schools miss out on funds State MP Trish Doyle blasts NSW Government after recent State Budget ignored local schools in need ERIN MAMO

he NSW Government released the 2017-18 State Budget last week with a commitment to social infrastructure, health and education, but State Member Trish Doyle said Blue Mountains schools have been totally left out of any funding.

Ms Doyle blasted the State Government and Premier Gladys Berejiklian in the wake of the Budget, pointing to Budget papers that show Blue Mountains schools will not receive a single dollar from the education infrastructure spend in 2017.

“After years of privatisation and public asset sales, this Government has billions of dollars of our money at its disposal, but they have failed to reinvest any money in our local schools,” she said.

“When you look at a map of the schools who are getting upgrades under this year’s Budget there’s nothing between Emu Plains and Bathurst.

“They’ve completely ignored the needs of Blue Mountains schools and continued with their Sydney-centric view of the state.”

As part of the Budget, the NSW Government announced that 120 schools across

Ms Doyle said a number of Blue Mountains schools have borne the brunt of successive funding cuts from State and Federal Governments recently.

“Blaxland High School is in desperate need for new industrial kitchens to allow them to undertake HSC-level coursework in food technology,” she said.

“And the industrial technology facilities at Katoomba High are from another century, not to mention the crumbling infrastructure at Springwood High, which has not been renovated or upgraded since it first opened in 1967.”

The arts and culture community in the Blue Mountains have also missed out big time in the latest Budget.

Last week NSW Arts Minister, Don Harwin, revealed that while $100 million will be allocated to arts in rural and regional NSW through Regional Cultural Fund grants, groups in the Blue Mountains are not eligible to apply for these.

Mr Harwin said he made no apology for this decision.

“This fund has been set up specifically to target the needs of regional communities,” he said.

Locals urged to support Red Nose Day Opportunity to have some fun and raise money for an important cause on Friday, June 30 EMILY NEWTON

ore than 3000 Australian families experience the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child every year.

Red Nose is fighting for a future where no child dies suddenly and unexpectedly during pregnancy, infancy or in childhood.

Yvonne Amos, from Red Nose, said this Red Nose Day on Friday, June 30, the organisation is relying on the generosity of the community to help save the lives of babies and children.

“Red Nose Day is our annual fundraising event, it’s the one time nationally we go out with our messages, encouraging people to buy a red nose,” Ms Amos said.

“Funds raised go towards safe sleeping education, help with bereavement support for families that have lost someone, and research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.”

Red Nose Day is fundamental in highlighting the devastating reality as each day nine children die suddenly through sudden unexpected death in infancy.

“There’s still no known cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,” Ms Amos said.

“Families are passionate about our cause because we provide information about reducing the risk.”

Money raised from the day goes to a range of services to help families, including counselling services, additional research and education programs.

Ms Amos is calling for support as the trauma of losing a child changes the whole community.

“There are about 60 people impacted by the death of one child,” she said.

“You’re really supporting Australian families at one of the most devastating times of their lives.

“Grief is universal but the journey is individual, so every person will face the situation in a slightly different way that is comfortable for them.”

Penrith Panthers boss Phil Gould and his team are throwing their support behind the campaign, helping to shine some light on the traumatic issue.

“It’s one of the great awareness programs that we’ve had in Australia, it’s been growing every year and it’s a really important subject,” Mr Gould said.

Big concerns over education with schools to miss out Last week in Parliament the Turnbull Government’s Schools Package was passed. Far from making school funding fairer, it has different rules for different schools.

While some saw it as a better option than the $30 billion funding cut Tony Abbott presided over, it falls short of the six year agreement the States signed up to under Labor. It’s up to $20 billion less for schools.

The changes restrict the Commonwealth Government’s contribution to public schools to only ever being 20 per cent of the cost of educating a student, leaving the States to fund 80 per cent.

For private schools, the Commonwealth funds 80 per cent of the cost of educating each student.

So it’s one rule for some schools and a different rule for others, creating an inequity that is totally sector-specific.

While it is electorally popular to reduce the funding of 24 elite private schools, it’s not really scratching the surface.

Over the next two years alone, Blue Mountains public schools will lose $5 million in federal funds, while the King’s School gets a $19 million increase over

the decade. The biggest losers in the Government’s model are public schools and local Catholic schools.

The original Labor funding was real reform.

It wasn’t perfect, but it was true to the principles of sector-blind and needsbased.

Our ability to educate every child in every school to a world standard is vital for our wellbeing and our economic future.

The question to the Federal Government and the crossbench Senators who passed this legislation is why didn’t they simply stick with the existing funding structure that Labor introduced which we’ve had for four years and was agreed to for six years?

And the answer from the Government would be that they wanted to save billions.

It’s a money-saving exercise, not a fair funding reform.

his is one of those articles that I am writing for myself as much as every reader! There are very few business owners who are not perpetually busy. And that busyness can result in stagnation: we do the same things week in, week out, in order to get the job done. While order and procedures are important to ensure efficiency, we do also have to remind ourselves to create situations where we can find inspiration. That inspiration might be simply coming to the conclusion that yes, everything is running as well as it can. But more often, creating the space for inspiration will result in amazing new ideas.

Here are some tips to generate inspiration: Be active Most people don’t get their best ideas sitting behind a desk. Walking or any type of exercise can help to clear your head and give you clarity of thought.

It also has the added bonus of unplugging you from technology. Try to go somewhere outdoors where the primary sound is that of nature.

Rest I saw an article recently about what you should do on a Sunday to get ready for the week. This may work for some, but for many people, this will be yet another day where we are not completely breaking from work. Even a short period of time tidying up emails or thinking about the week ahead can create additional stress. Give your head (and body) at least one day a week break from your business routine. This will clear your head to allow inspiration to flow, instead of being inundated with everyday tasks.

Change your scenery If your type of work allows it, take your ‘office’ mobile for an occasional day.

Head to the beach, or the mountains or the river, as new sights and sounds get your brain working differently, increasing the potential to find inspiration that could benefit your business.

Look around Actively look out for things to inspire you, and keep a record of your findings.

This might be taking interesting photos or notes.

e often need to acquire the services of other businesses.

How do you avoid pain and build a great relationship?

Conversely, how do others assess you, and how can you show yourself in a good light?

Recommendations Many people start by requesting recommendations from friends and acquaintances, or post on a Facebook group. Some recommendations are from people referring a friend or business network referral partner, but who have not actually used the service. Some may have had a genuinely great experience, but was it recent and doing what you require? Great recommendations don’t automatically equate to a great service!

Therefore you must conduct your own due diligence.

Conducting due diligence • Look for reviews and testimonials from real clients or review actual work completed • Make sure the business has adequate contact details – someone that hides behind Facebook Messenger or a

disposable free email address only may not be a safe option • Check whether they have an ABN and registered business name on abr. business.gov.au or on ASIC • On the abr site check for GST registration. A business may only issue a tax invoice if they are registered for GST, otherwise it must be an invoice with no GST • For an expensive contract you should be speaking to customer referees and questioning the process as well as the completion Negotiating Remember negotiation is not just on price, but also scope, value and quality.

If nothing else moves, expect no move in price. Agree on a contract that protects both parties.

Ongoing checks Make it business practice to regularly check that the ABN and GST status are current. If a business does not provide a valid ABN you must withhold 49 per cent of the payment and forward to the ATO. If you paid them already in full, you can be made to pay an equivalent penalty.

Recently, whilst luxuriating in my office atop the Blue Mountains Record building, I was reminded of an incident that occurred way back in the early days of my banking career.

The incident still amazes me to this day.

Back then, banking hours were between 10am and 3pm. Businesses however closed at 5pm. So to protect their earnings overnight, they utilised a service known as a ‘night safe’.

of the bank. The idea being, that all businesses subscribing to the service were issued with a lockable leather satchel, which they would fill with their day’s takings.

They would ‘deposit’ this through a sliding draw which lodged the satchel directly into the small safe. This would then provide a secure overnight resting place for their money.

The next morning the client would front up, have their satchel retrieved from the safe and the contents deposited into their accounts.

A tried and true system that was absolutely foolproof.

That is until someone had the idea to take a mid size steel tool box. Paint the banks logo on it and literally, chain it to a post next to the night safe. They then placed a large sign on the night safe that informed customers “night safe facilities are under repair, could you please place all satchels in the secure box provided. Thank you Branch Manager”. And with the addition of a large hand drawn arrow pointing to the rather dubious alternative night safe facilities, the most brazen of traps was set.

Many businesses had their employees lodge their takings after hours. But it would seem these employees were certainly not paid to possess even the slightest bit of common sense.

That’s right, you guessed it, at least 10 businesses as I recall, placed their takings into the “secure box” which ‘miraculously’ disappeared before the bank opened the next morning.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

ince meeting at Western Sydney University in the late 80s, David Collins and Shane Dundas have mimed and mimicked their way into Australia’s physical comedy Hall of Fame.

Known to audiences as The Umbilical Brothers, the duo have also cracked the international market through sell out tours and TV appearances alongside US late night legends like Jay Leno, David Letterman, and more recently, Stephen Colbert.

Such is their popularity the pair have even found themselves the proud owners of an Emmy Award and a couple of BAFTAs. This July, the comedy stars will be bringing their most popular show ‘Speedmouse’ – which is celebrating its 15th anniversary – to the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood.

“No matter where we are around the world we always get ‘when are you doing ‘Speedmouse’ again?’,” David Collins, one half of the duo, said of the show.

“For some reason it is our most popular and in-demand show.”

Based on a simple yet highly engaging premise, the show acts as a platform

for the pair’s talent for mime and vocal sound effects.

“Shane and I play ourselves while somebody else has the remote control and is stuffing around with the show,” David said.

“They can stop the show, they can fast forward, they can skip the boring bits. It’s basically our show gone digital.

“It also has a ‘Sixth Sense’ style ending where people go ‘oh, right, that’s what was happening!”

While ‘Speedmouse’ may have done a fair few laps of the comedy circuit, it gets regular makeovers to keep things fresh for the audience and its performers.

That means if you’ve seen the show before, there will still be something new.

“I don’t want people to come and say ‘oh I’ve seen that show and they just did it exactly the same’,” David said.

“We’re not like one of those bands that play the song exactly the same way, we’re one of those ones that go off and do a death metal version of a jazz song.”

While the shows may have changed, the motto behind the Umbilical Brothers’ work hasn’t changed: “If we find it funny, so will others”.

“We play around with parts of the show just because we’re trying to keep ourselves on our toes and make each other laugh,” David said.

“That’s how Umbilical Brothers started.

If we’re making each other laugh then we can make an audience laugh.”

Winter is the time of year when colds and flus start to run rampant.

It’s also the time of year when we all start looking for ways to ‘boost’ our immunity, to try to avoid that cold that’s been going around the office/school/home.

While there may be plenty of products on the market that claim to do just that, one of the most effective ways to fight off the nasty germs that cause colds and flus is with a healthy diet full of whole foods.

Healthy eating alone won’t prevent colds and flus, but it is an important part of a multi-pronged approach to help reduce the likelihood and severity of colds.

The Dietitians Association of Australia recommends a focus on foods that contain vitamin C, zinc and protein, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly, or those whose immune systems may already be compromised.

Below is a list of immunity boosting foods, along with some simple meal ideas.

Remember variety is key, so try to

include a range of whole foods – in particular fruits and vegetables – into your diet for maximum benefit.

guess many people wonder why a small wine producer such as the Hoskins family’s Brangayne would bother having two vineyards, but those who understand climate know only too well that 100m difference in elevation means the world.

That’s why Brangayne’s home vineyard, at an elevation of some 960-1000m on the higher eastern slopes of Orange’s Mt Canobolas, is planted to early ripening varieties such as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc — and why its Ynys Witrin vineyard, not that far away as the crow flies, but a hundred metres or so lower, is planted to later ripening varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and riesling. Wines of the week Brangayne 2016 Sauvignon Blanc ($22) I reckon that this dry white, made 100 per cent from Brangayne’s home vineyard, shows exactly why I regard sauvignon blanc from Orange so highly.

It has plenty of herbaceous, tropical-fruit aromas but it also has genuine depth of palate flavour and easily passes the second-glass test. Much better than many unsatisfying, overcropped sauvignons from Marborough.

Brangayne 2014 Tristan ($35) A dry red blended from cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz grown on the warmer Ynys Witrin vineyard.

The grapes probably wouldn’t have ripened adequately a hundred or so metres higher up, but here they deliver a wine with distinctive leafy cabernet aromas but an ample, generous palate.

A flavoursome, attractive medium-bodied, excellent food wine — good stuff.

For many of us injuries tend to come on after being overworked throughout the winter sports season, with our bodies taking the toll for this increased exercise load and both new and niggling injuries coming into play. The next thing you know you are struggling to walk come Monday morning.

Often practitioners will have patients presenting with pain around the Achilles, being the tendon that attaches our calf muscle to our heel bone.

Sports or activities involving running and/or jumping can be the main culprits for this!

Achilles tendinopathy is a common injury usually related to overuse from an increase in activity or long periods of time on your feet.

The Achilles tendon and our calf muscles are both important in being our main propulsive mechanism for walking or running and, without the two, we wouldn’t be able to function normally.

Therefore, when there is pain or injury to the Achilles tendon, it can be very problematic for patients.

Don’t be mistaken in thinking only athletes are prone to this, as it doesn’t discriminate and can be caused by simply moving up stairs or moving/landing abruptly.

Initially it is important to have a Podiatrist/Physiotherapist assess the injury and determine what mechanical processes have occurred to cause this injury, and from there we can alter your activity to reduce strain on the structure.

Given that this is your ‘classic soft tissue injury; Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) are initially important in reducing both pain and inflammation.

However, treatment options may include conditioning exercises, heat, footwear changes, taping, manual therapy and if foot posture is an issue, Orthotic Therapy may be implemented by your practitioner.

In short, this can be a very damaging long-term injury if it becomes ignored.

Plenty of athletes and children try to push through this condition and it normally ends up making the overall outcome worse.

If you feel pain in the area then it is advised to ice and rest it, before consulting a practitioner.

wo Mountains men are bringing local sport to the world through live streaming show ‘The Sporting Chance’.

Filmed live at the Lapstone Hotel, former Winmalee High School students Jono Lees and Matt Poynting are again bringing local sport to the homes of Blue Mountains residents and beyond.

The pair kicked off their first show of the winter series from the popular pub last Friday.

In their first instalment, the pair welcomed Sydney Thunder’s Mikayla Hinkley as well as Craig Beacroft from McCarthy Catholic College, who chatted about the school’s win at the Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens Tournament.

Poynting said the show offers an alternative voice to community sport in the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury regions.

“We’re really keen to profile local sports, so we are interested in hearing from anyone wanting to share their story with us,” he said.

“We want to make it an entertaining experience and take the sting out of winter.”

The next show will be filmed live on July 21 at Lapstone Hotel. You can watch the live stream via The Sporting Chance Facebook page.
