Women promise to be bold for change Standing up for themselves: Locals take part in International Women’s Day celebrations ERIN MAMO

L

ast week, women all around the globe came together at different events for International Women’s

Day. On Friday, March 10, women in the Blue Mountains gathered at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub in Springwood to hear from prominent females within the community about what this year’s ‘BeBoldForChange’ campaign means to them and how others can make positive change.

Founder of the Queen of Hearts Foundation, Michelle Ellery, whose organisation supports survivors of domestic violence and child sexual abuse, said ‘BeBoldForChange’ isn’t about being the loudest person in the room.

“Be bold for change to me is about being thoughtful, passionate and committed and targeting bold action to create a more responsive and responsible member in the community,” Ms Ellery said.

Delilah Scott, who is part of the Blue Mountains Youth Council and a Corporal in the Air Force Cadets told a story about how she believes she faced discrimination in the workplace recently.

“Staff would come around at dinner and talk to us each night and each night this

Senior Officer would go out of his way to greet all the males and then mock all the females in the room, picking on them about their uniform, their hair and what they ate.

“One night he came over to me and greeted the male next to me and in front

of me and then he turned to me and said, ‘You look good in your uniform’, and then proceeded to turn to the two males and said ‘For once the girls aren’t letting you down’.”

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, talked about how she believes that the work women do is always under valued.

“It isn’t as obvious when you’re young that women aren’t making the same amount of money as men in the workforce, but as you get older you start to notice it,” Mrs Templeman said.

Mrs Templeman also touched on the recent changes in legislation to public holiday and weekend penalty rates for those who work in retail, saying it will impact women enormously.

“It’s so obvious that women are going to suffer from this change because women are far more likely to be the ones working weekends in the juggle of child bearing responsibilities that they might have,” she said.

“Be bold for change is about taking those small steps along the way and I’m determined if ever there is legislation before me where I can speak for women, I am prioritising it, we cannot keep waiting for equality.”

Time for new Premier to stand up and be counted Parliamentary Secretary Catherine Cusack was left with no choice but to resign after sending a late-night scathing email to Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

But after the resignation last week, which Ms Berejiklian quickly accepted, we’ve been left with one question.

Did Ms Cusack have a point?

After all, many have written that Ms Berejiklian’s Cabinet was not picked on merit, but instead is based on ensuring different factions are kept happy.

The honeymoon is very close to being over for Gladys Berejiklian.

While the circus of federal politics is overshadowing what’s happening at a state level, at some point Ms Berejiklian needs to make it clear what she stands for. Politics is very much about image and perception, and Ms Berejiklian needs to make her mark.

Reversing our growing waistlines New telephone health coach service to help Blue Mountains locals make a positive change ERIN MAMO

he St Vincent de Paul Society in Springwood has partnered with the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District in a bid to get the community healthier.

The two organisations recently announced that they would collaborate to offer the community a free telephone health coach service as part of NSW Health’s ‘Make Healthy Normal’ campaign.

St Vincent de Paul Area Manager, Sergio Foernges, said he is hoping that people in the Mountains will get involved in the new initiative.

“The partnership will offer both staff, including volunteers, and customers across the 21 Vinnies stores in western Sydney, including Blaxland, Springwood and Katoomba in the Mountains, the opportunity to make healthy lifestyle changes,” Mr Foernges said.

“I think a lot of people could benefit from being a little healthier. Whether it’s swapping a piece of chocolate for a piece of fruit or parking the car further away from the entrance to the grocery store, to get that extra bit of exercise, everything helps.”

“Something like this is a great tool because it gets people committing to changes together,” he said.

“I’ve already heard volunteers talking

about exercise they can do together, new recipes and new ways of cooking food.”

The qualified health coaches that are part of the program will provide motivation, advice and support on healthy eating and physical activity to participants through 10 free telephone sessions.

Since 2013, more than 1,500 people in western Sydney have signed up for the free telephone coaching service.

On average people lose 3.8kg in weight and 5.1cm off their waist circumference.

Springwood volunteer, Jan Zammit said she participated in the program a few years ago after seeing it advertised on the TV. “I lost about 10 kilos in 12 months and I felt really good,” Mrs Zammit said.

“For me, it worked because I was motivated to eat well knowing the health coach was going to call me the following day and ask me what I had to eat.”

Ms Zammit said she is planning on signing up for the program again this week to get back in shape.

“I know if I do what they tell me, I can do it,” she said.

Historic trip through the Mountains Chance for locals to go back in time thanks to train trip to Capertee Valley this weekend ERIN MAMO

he chance to ride in a vintage train through the widest canyon in the world is on offer again this month after a successful journey last year.

This year the Capertee Train Trip and High Tea will be held on Sunday, March 19, departing from various stations in the Mountains early in the morning and arriving in the small village of Capertee, north of Lithgow, at 10.30am.

Secretary of the Capertee Progress Association, Dorothy Pike, said she was surprised and overjoyed last year when tickets to the event sold so quickly.

“We had an exceptional response to the train trip last August, so we decided we really wanted to do it all again,” Ms Pike said.

Because of last year’s success, Ms Pike said this year the community wants to give people from all over Sydney the opportunity to experience Capertee Valley.

“This year the train ride will start in Sydney, stopping to pick up passengers at Strathfield, Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith,” Ms Pike said.

“The train will then continue up the Mountain, stopping at Springwood,

From Wallerawang, the train will then travel non-stop to Capertee where passengers will disembark.

In Capertee, if passengers choose to they can board a bus which will take them down into the Capertee Valley, where they will have high tea while taking in the stunning landscape and rock faces from

the valley floor. After this experience, passengers will have the rest of the day in town where they can check out the Capertee Hall markets or venture to one of the local eateries for lunch.

At the markets there will be an all-day sausage sizzle, a ball pit for the kids, a car show and local entertainment.

Alternatively, there is the option to skip Capertee altogether and stay on the train

through to the town of Kandos taking in more scenery along the way.

With either option, the day trip will come to an end at 4.30pm when the train departs Capertee to start the trip home.

Mr Wren, CEO of Nova Employment, received the award for Leadership in Employment Inclusion at the Disability Industry Innovation Awards.

While the award bears his name, he said it reflects the hard work of his colleagues and the support of the local community.

“As the company’s figurehead and on behalf of all the people who do all the work, I was very happy to take the award,” he said.

“What it recognises is not so much what I have done, but what the work of 175 hard grafters have achieved.

“It represents the most dedicated team in town. It’s their efforts that are truly being recognised.”

The not-for-profit, based out of St Marys, helps job seekers with disability find award-wage work in open employment.

Since 2015, the numbers of people NOVA has placed into work has more than doubled.

he sale of unhealthy food and drinks at hospitals could soon be a thing of the past with local hospitals set to remove them from the premises.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is in the early stages of phasing down the availability of unhealthy food and drinks at retail outlets and vending machines at Local Health District facilities.

NBMLHD Chief Executive, Kay Hyman, told the Record education on nutritious

food and drink items is extremely important.

“As providers of health care, NBMLHD plays a vital role in informing and educating the public and our community about the health risks associated with the excess consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and unhealthy foods,” she said.

“Our priority is the health and wellbeing of the local community and the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and unhealthy eating are major contributors to overweight and obesity.”

Westmead Hospital announced recently that it would ban the sale of sugary beverages across the campus.

All hands on deck for kitchen reno Art Centre’s 40yo kitchen gets the chop to make way for new model thanks to State Government grant ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains Creative Arts Centre (BMCAC) has started work on major renovations to their premises in Glenbrook thanks to a $12,000 government grant.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, recently met with the President of the BMCAC, Allison James, to congratulate the organisation whose application for funding under the 2016 Community Building Partnership Program was approved in December last year.

Ms James said the funding will now be used to replace the kitchen, which is more than 40-years-old and in dire need of an overhaul.

“We desperately needed funding to replace the kitchen,” Ms James said.

“The old kitchen was in a shocking state, we basically had one cupboard and a sink.”

In the last three weeks the members of the BMCAC have taken it upon themselves to start demolishing the old kitchen.

Ms James said the members decided they would remove the kitchen to save money.

“The members decided if they pulled out the kitchen then we wouldn’t need to

spend money on labourers and we could use the grant money to purchase a bigger and better kitchen,” Ms James said.

The BMCAC, which stands out proudly in Glenbrook with its brightly coloured exterior walls, runs a variety of art classes for adults and children throughout the year, including pottery, weaving and life drawing.

The centre also hosts a number of exhibitions, demonstrations and market days.

Mr Ayres, who recommended BMCAC as a recipient for funding, said it was his pleasure to put the organisation forward.

“The upgrade to the kitchen of the Arts Centre will no doubt be a benefit to all that utilise this facility,” Mr Ayres said.

Ms James said as a not-for-profit organisation, the Arts Centre is extremely appreciative of receiving assistance from the state government.

She said the new-look facilities will also make the centre more appealing.

“It means so much to have a fully-functioning kitchen and the upgrade will make the centre so much more viable to hire out to other members of the community,” she said.

The main room at the centre is currently available for hire to the public for individual exhibitions and workshops.

friend of mine, who also runs her own business, posted on social media recently that her style doesn’t suit everyone. She is completely OK with that, but conceded that it has taken her a long time to get to that point. Like many of us, in the past she thought she needed to adapt or curb her natural mode of operating to suit others. She was trying to be all things to all people. But instead she has now found her ‘client niche’ and is reaping the rewards of that.

Your social media content is another great example of this. We all use social media for different reasons and respond to content in different ways. Some people will love your witty Facebook posts – the same posts will annoy others. Some people will be bored by a stream of factual posts – others prefer to read only useful information. For some businesses, a combination of both types of posts might work. But for most of us, we need to provide content, and provide it in a particular style, suited to our audience. Your social media followers decided to follow you for a

reason: they liked what they saw. They won’t remain followers if the content strays too far.

This is not to say that your service delivery has to take a ‘cookie cutter’ approach and treat everyone exactly the same. Some people need more help than others. Some people need more information than others. My swim coach described this well to me recently.

He stated that he tailors his feedback and advice to each person. There is no point demanding the same changes to technique for each person, when they are at different ability levels, or have bodies that are incapable of making that particular change. However, his approach and coaching style is the same with everyone.

You can’t be everything to everyone and not everyone is going to like you. Assuming you aren’t the world’s meanest ogre, you are going to find customers who respond to your way of operating and relating. Do not adopt a style that is naturally not ‘you’ for the sake of attracting customers. You won’t be authentic and it is not sustainable.

oday I’m sharing a story with some very strong learnings for customer service and cash flow within small business.

Recently a colleague bought lunch. He ordered two sushi rolls and decided to top up the order with two dumplings.

The server started packaging when the supervisor stopped them and said: “No you can’t have that, we only sell five dumplings. You can have five dumplings.

They cost under $5�.

My colleague was happy to have two at say $2, but he did not need or want to eat five.

The supervisor insisted: “No you can only have five. You have to have five.�

But that’s the thing, he doesn’t have to have five. He can have none, and no sushi rolls either. So after no joy with the staff, he left and went elsewhere and they missed out on a $10 sale.

Worse for them, this customer was a two to three times a week regular. This ‘service’ completely put him off and he won’t go back for some time, if at all.

If we say he averages 2.5 visits a week, for say 40 weeks and spends $10 a time,

they have foregone $1000 in annual sales!

They now need to acquire new customers to cover the overheads his $1000 paid for. Often acquisition strategies cost money.

Packaging is something we as advisors often encourage. However did they need to insist on five dumplings and lose a customer over it?

Is the customer always right?

No, but in this case they only have a desire for a smaller portion size and it seems little imposition on the business to meet the client’s need. Where possible the client’s needs and wants should be met.

Short term decisions can make or break the business.

If 10 regulars felt the same way about this decision, they could lose a whopping $10,000 in business!

Customer feedback needs to be collected and discussed.

If the regulars over the course of a month start disappearing the business owners need to be aware!

Customer service can make or break a business – let it make yours!

To say the world has changed over the last 40 years, is somewhat akin to suggesting “it can get a bit cold” to Napoleon prior to him invading Russia – grossly understated, and failing to fully grasp the ramifications.

We have certainly been morphing into a ‘globalised’ society, moving towards a much freer system of trade, and travel becoming the norm. Tearing down the Berlin Wall, followed by China’s entry into the World Trade Organisation, are regarded as probably the two main catalysts that created this

path to globalisation. I guess it doesn’t require a PHD in Political Science to comprehend the major ideological changes required for these events to occur. And the third contributing factor has been the rapid technological progress we have experienced. As a result, apart from a few Amazonian tribes eschewing external contact, the people of Earth are now

connected for all manner of transactions, making us one big happy family.

But strangely these incredible “once in a lifetime” events have not been enough to halt the ‘circle of life’ (thank you Elton), because currently we are experiencing a completely different story. Donald Trump has sent a clear signal to the rest of the world that they are adopting an ‘America First’ policy in everything from trade to defence. Britain has left the EU, which has created rumblings from other members also contemplating similar actions. And it would seem a wave of nationalism is sweeping the globe with voters empowering political parties whose policies would have seemed almost absurd just five years ago.

It is an almost unbelievable turn of events from just a few years ago and most certainly, totally unpredictable.

As investors, there are many lessons we can take from this incredible reversal, but for starters, to all those who believe that you can’t lose money investing in property, and the current property boom we are experiencing will just keep going, might like to reflect on the concept of globalisation, before you borrow too much money.

Defying the generation gap

h e n Violent Femmes bassist B r i a n R itchie m a d e the move from New York to Hobart he couldn’t have predicted that it would lead to a role curating one of Australia’s most unique and successful summer festivals.

In a case of serendipity it was at this time that Australian art collector David

Walsh was dreaming up what would become MONA, aka the Museum of Old and New Art – an architecturally striking art museum that overlooks the Derwent River in Tasmania.

The pair’s meeting in sleepy Tassie led to the creation of MONA FOMA – a festival held at the museum which showcases the work of artists from different art forms including sound, dance and visual art.

“He’s a big Violent Femmes fan and he wanted to do a festival but didn’t know how to do it, so he called on me to help out,” Brian said.

MONA FOMA started in 2009 and ran for several years before the opening of MONA. According to Brian the festival

had a significant influence on the direction of the museum.

“It became like an incubator and kind of like a notepad for what the museum was, more based on music than art but still a lot of the same philosophies were involved,” he said.

It’s not surprising that Brian – who is now an Australian citizen – was asked to take on the position. Along with frontman Gordon Gano he founded a band that started in the 80s, but whose music still fits perfectly into the 2017 hipstersaturated alternative rock scene without relying on nostalgia – no easy feat for a band that formed over 35 years ago.

Take for example Violent Femmes’

biggest hit ‘Blister in The Sun’. By avoiding the hallmark sounds of the 80s the American alternative rockers were able to create a classic that has no obvious ties to a particular musical era.

“When we made the first album we consciously avoided any references to the music scene of 1982,” Brian said.

“There was a lot of common devices going on then such as drum machines or cheezy kind of synth keyboards, whatever it was we avoided it.”

This week King Kong returns to the big screen in the gigantic new action release ‘Kong: Skull Island’.

With the release of the muchanticipated Nintendo Switch console comes the latest instalment in the hugely popular Zelda franchise.

Gamers can explore the wilds of Hyrule, where you will battle enemies, hunt wild beasts, collect food and elixirs, and uncover more than 100 puzzle-containing Shrines of Trials.

‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ has been a massive hit with critics and fans, so if you love gaming this is definitely one to add to the collection.

The film is directed by Jordan VogtRoberts, who is known for his work on ‘The Kings of Summer’.

Across cinema history, there’s been an absolute abundance of King Kong movies.

Whether it’s worth once again revisiting this popular ‘monster movie’ story is yet to be seen.

One thing is for sure though, this is definitely a flick that needs to be enjoyed on the big screen with an extra large bucket of popcorn in hand.

Ê Channel Ten has announced that the runner-up from last year’s ‘The Bachelorette’, Matty Johnson, will star in the next series of ‘The Bachelor’. It’s no secret that Australians love Asian cuisine.

These days even the smallest rural town has a Thai or Chinese restaurant; sushi is a staple in shopping centre food courts; while Vietnamese, Malaysian and Korean restaurants are becoming increasingly popular.

There’s certainly plenty to love about Asian cuisine, so what can we learn from some of our favourite foods?

How to build flavour When it comes to flavour, Asian cuisine has it in spades. Chili, garlic, ginger, wasabi, coriander, miso, mint, lemongrass – the options are endless and varied enough to suit all tastes whether you prefer mild or spicy, hearty or fresh.

Getting the balance of sweet, salty, spicy and sour isn’t always easy, but when done right there’s nothing quite as delicious.

If you’re new to preparing Asian cuisine at home start with ready-made curry pastes and sauces, add Asian herbs like mint and coriander to salads, or try simple stir-fry sauce combinations like

soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, brown sugar and a little chili sauce.

How to achieve balance Asian meals are generally quite well balanced nutritionally, often including a protein source (e.g. beef, chicken, seafood or tofu), a generous helping of vegetables/ salad and a side of rice/noodles.

While heavily processed foods don’t feature as much as they do in Western diets, sugar is definitely still on the menu when it comes to Asian desserts, proving once again that moderation is the key to a balanced diet.

To increase the nutritional quality of your Asian meals, try swapping white rice for brown rice, and aim for a serving

size of around a quarter of your plate for your carbohydrate portion.

How to foster a sense of community There’s one reason why Asian dining options are so popular that has nothing to do with the food itself, but rather the way it’s eaten. Asian countries tend to place a strong emphasis on group and shared dining.

Meals are often placed at the centre of the table and are designed to be enjoyed among dining companions.

This focus on communal dining helps to highlight the social nature of food, but it also has nutritional benefits as it encourages variety and the sampling of new flavours and ingredients.

altarni have wrapped a Fume Blanc label around a 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, a lovely wine whose 56 per cent fruit from Tasmania’s Coal Valley and the remainder out of Victoria’s Pyrenees, makes for a really cracker stand-out drop.

With no such thing as a Fume Blanc grape, makers stick the Fume Blanc moniker on Sauvignon Blanc that they’ve aged in oak, the wine taking up a nice touch of smokiness from that oak.

And this Taltarni’s got that touch, along with luscious, mouth-filling flavours ranging from ideas of passionfruit to white peaches, citrus and acidity, and all making for a great lip-smacker on its own, or as a rewarding accompaniment to a whole diversity of lighter food options.

At $26 it’s good-value buying for such food match ideas as easy garlic prawns to chicken saltimbocca, dolmas to simple fish and chips, lemon-herbed pork chops or flavoursome crab cakes.

One to note: Rymill Coonawarra have released just the third vintage of their Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon (pictured), a moreish wine from 2015 that’s showing all indications of being another bolter like its 2013 and 2014 predecessors.

One of those reds to buy now and enjoy now – although it’s showing plenty of signs of hanging in there to give rewarding drinking over the next five to seven years – this one’s all about forward dark cherries and mint on the palate, and dusty, chocolatey tannins.

Overall smooth and with just a delicate showing of oak, it’s a $23 drop that its maker, Sandrine Gimon, suggests will go really well with roast pork and plum sauce, or equally ravioli with mushrooms and pecorino.

Pain in the pelvic region or lower back is common during pregnancy.

This pain is related to a woman being pregnant and can have a variety of symptoms: • Pain may be felt at the back of the pelvis near your buttocks or at the front near your pubic bone.

• It can be sharp and at times stabbing pain which can extend down into the hips and legs.

• It can be aggravated by activities such as turning over in bed, walking, stairs, dressing and getting in and out of the car.

• Pain often eases with rest.

• It can begin as early as the first trimester but more typically towards the 2nd and 3rd trimester.

There are a few reasons for the pain, these include: • The pelvic area is an area under constant change during pregnancy.

• Hormonal changes soften the soft tissues which can increase the mobility in the pelvis.

• The growing baby, placenta and additional fluid increase the load on the pelvis with reduced support from the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles being stretched.

• Changes in your alignment can also create non-optimal loading of the pelvis.

There are many things that can be done to reduce or eliminate the pain.

You often will need to change some of your movement habits and take ownership of the problem by seeking professional advice and completing some exercises.

This is not a dangerous condition for you or your baby and most likely you will make a good recovery by implementing good management strategies.

The checklist below is a guide for you to follow: • Maintain correct alignment in standing, sitting and walking.

• Always stand on two feet.

• Remain active but combine this with restful periods.

• Use pillows between your legs when sleeping.

• Avoid heavy lifting.

• Watch how you carry objects.

eekend parking congestion at Lapstone Oval and netball courts should ease significantly by the end of the month, with carpark upgrades currently underway.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said the works include formalising the existing unformed car park and construction of additional car parking facilities.

“We want to encourage the Blue Mountains community to pursue sport and recreation,” he said.

“It is important that the standard of our sporting precincts meet the needs of the clubs and players, but are also managed so that any adverse impact on nearby residences is minimal.”

Ward 4 Councillor, Brendan Christie, said the project was a great outcome for players, their families and local residents.

“Over the past five years I have spoken to many residents who have been concerned about safety around the precinct and this will go a long way in allaying those concerns,” Cr Christie said.

“As well as boosting the number of parking spaces, the new car park will ensure there will

President of the Blue Mountains Netball Association, Alison Yates, said local families will be very happy about the changes in parking.

“It was so dangerous when both the courts and the oval were being used,” she said.

“We were lucky nothing ever happened to a child there, with parents being forced to use the small car park as a drop off zone and children getting in and out of cars in the busy area.”

The upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of the month, weather permitting.
