ot only can you shop online and date online, now you have the opportunity to join an online composting community.

Last week, Blue Mountains City Council launched the trial of their Compost Hub, which aims to link households that are not composting with households that do compost via an interactive online platform.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said the Compost Hub trial aims to reduce food waste to landfill.

“We know that on average food waste is the biggest component of the household garbage bin, which is something we can change by composting,” he said.

“The Compost Hub trial is a clever way of extending the ‘sharing’ economy to managing our household waste more sustainably.

“The Compost Hub trial provides an innovative way for those residents who are keen to compost but find it difficult to manage their own compost bin, to get involved and reduce food waste to landfill.”

Once residents register, they can pin their location on a map as a compost champion or a compost contributor,

Champions receive food scraps from their local contributors in the neighbourhood.

Contributors simply drop off their food scraps to a compost champion nearby.

Once a Compost Hub is set up, Council will provide a limited number of compost bins to compost champions and kitchen

caddies to the compost contributors.

The Composting Hub trial will run from this month until July and will involve up to 10 Hubs.

To evaluate the success of the trial, Hub trial participants will be asked to record how much food waste they collect.

300 hours for despicable crime A Katoomba man who punched his pregnant girlfriend in the face, flattening her teeth to the roof of her mouth, has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service work.

The man, 24, faced Penrith Local Court for sentencing last Thursday, May 18, charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ stemming from the 2014 attack.

The court heard the couple became involved in a verbal argument at a motel they were living at on Bathurst Road, Wentworth Falls, which spilled over to the bus stop across the road.

The victim, who was six months’ pregnant with their first child at the time, woke to a large amount of blood coming from her mouth.

Before handing down his sentence, Magistrate John McIntosh did little to hide his disgust.

“This is an... offence where you punch your six-month pregnant girlfriend in the mouth during an argument while you’re waiting at the bus stop, and she had to have her teeth pulled because of your actions,” he said.

“Unbelievable! My goodness!”

It wasn’t until the victim attended Springwood Police Station earlier this month for a separate incident that she disclosed the October 2014 offence in an interview, court papers reveal.

The local man was found guilty and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service work.

Toll cost an unfair burden on struggling families I certainly understand the anger surrounding the reintroduction of the toll on the M4, but I also accept that we need to pay for such significant infrastructure somehow.

However, a $4.56 charge each way for motorists for the Parramatta to Home-

bush section seems not only excessive, but financially crippling for many struggling families.

It adds more than $2000 a year to the family budget if someone is driving to work each day and needs to use the M4.

The one month grace period is a slap

in the face to motorists who have put up with months and months of delays and construction work on the M4.

And let’s not forget that $4.56 is just the start of the pain. We’re set to pay $3.95 to travel on the M4 East from Homebush to Haberfield when that section is finished.

Mountains continues to lead the way Former High Court judge visits Blue Mountains to celebrate IDAHOT ERIN MAMO

ormer High Court judge, Michael Kirby, visited the Blue Mountains last week as the guest speaker for this year’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).

Each year, IDAHOT is observed globally on May 17, marking the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases list.

Mr Kirby said that just a few years ago, people would not be gathering like they did last week.

“Unfortunately, in many parts of the world and even some parts of Australia, events such as this could not take place,” he said.

“So I thank the citizens of the Blue Mountains for taking a lead in this direction.

“The outlook in the Blue Mountains has always been farsighted and clear.”

Mr Kirby is a renowned human rights advocate and was Australia’s longest serving judge when he retired from the High Court of Australia in 2009.

He has served as a UN Special Representative on Human Rights in Cambodia, as a Member of the UNESCO International

expressed her delight in having Mr Kirby attend the event.

“On behalf of the Blue Mountains City Council, I thank Mr Kirby for taking the time to attend our IDAHOT event, which is now in its eighth year,” Cr Hollywood said.

This year’s IDAHOT theme was families, recognising that in 2017, the word ‘family’ includes all kinds of relationships.

Councils pledge to work together With combined assets valued at over $4 billion, the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith City Councils are working together to explore options for the future management of their infrastructure assets in the region, with exciting possibilities.

The vision of the recently formed Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith City Council Regional Strategic Alliance centres on harnessing the collective resources and commitment to strengthen the long term future of each City and their respective communities.

Regional Strategic Alliance CEO, Belinda Szafraniec, said: “Asset management is one of the biggest challenges facing local councils. It makes sense to put our heads together and think regionally about how we can better manage $4 billion worth of infrastructure assets.”

The motivation for the project is the potential to gain economies of scale and develop a common methodology for asset management which, in turn, will improve the financial sustainability and organisational performance for each of the three councils.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill welcomed the initiative as an interesting and transformative way of working together.

“Through true collaboration there is potential to achieve better value for money and improve the way we deliver services to our communities,” Cr Greenhill said.

He said it was exciting to be involved in a “bold and leading edge” initiative.

mall businesses in the Blue Mountains are set to financially benefit from a new Government initiative where welfare recipients will be given a job.

Federal Member for Mitchell, Alex Hawke, recently visited the Mountain Grind Coffee Shop in Winmalee to talk about PaTH, a new program which will aim to get welfare recipients a job on a trial basis with the potential of it becoming permanent and rewarding small businesses for taking a chance on the individual.

Mr Hawke said a problem the Government is seeing right now is that a lot of small businesses can’t find people to employ.

“Through PaTH the way it would work is, a small business will take on a welfare recipient on a trial basis and then if the employer decides to keep the individual after the trial period is over, the Government will pay the employer $10,000,” he said.

“The Government is doing this to try and help everyone grow, both small businesses and those individuals stuck on welfare and unable to be given a go.”

he finalists for the annual Altitude Awards have been announced and several are from the Mountains.

The annual awards, which are run by Women with Altitude, a Blue Mountains business that was established to create a professional community for women to connect, is now in its eighth year.

Women with Altitude Founder, Andrea Turner-Boys, said the awards are a great opportunity to shine a light on the great work people in the Blue Mountains and surrounds are doing.

“These awards are really important to us,” she told the Record.

“So many of us are working with our head down and bum up. We are pushing and surviving and making things happen and are often not where we want to be yet.

“By looking back at your business to answer some questions or preparing an awards submission, it makes you realise that you have achieved far more than what you give yourself credit for and for us that’s the magic.”

Popular lake to receive major upgrade Tourists and locals rejoice after Wentworth Falls Lake receives huge Government funding boost ERIN MAMO

he popular hot spot for tourists and locals alike, Wentworth Falls Lake will be upgraded thanks to a Government grant.

Under the Community Development Grants Programme, the Government recently announced that $652,774 in funding will be given to Blue Mountains City Council to modernise the venue.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, who visited Wentworth Falls Lake recently, said she is pleased to welcome the significant milestone, which will see the upgrade and modernisation of facilities at the lake.

“This project will include the construction of an accessible walking track, new toilets, additional car and bus parking, viewing platform and the installation of educational signage,” Ms Payne said.

“The Coalition promised the Blue Mountains a tourism upgrade to Wentworth Falls Lake Reserve and the Coalition is delivering.

“It will benefit Blue Mountains locals and the wider community, and I am proud to be seeing it through to fruition.”

the funding and said it’s great that the Federal Government is honouring a promise made at the last Federal election.

“Tourism is a major part of the economy for Wentworth Falls and the upper Blue Mountains,” he said.

Fellow Councillor Romola Hollywood also welcomed the funding.

“Wentworth Falls Lake is a jewel in the Blue Mountains crown,” she said.

“It is increasingly popular with visitors and an important place of recreation for local residents and families and improved car parking and toilet facilities are much needed to meet the demand and community expectations.

“What is most exciting is that this funding allows us to start Stage 1 of the boardwalk, which will enable people to walk further around the lake shore and appreciate more of the lake’s beautiful vistas.”

Council will co-fund the project contributing to a shared investment of over $1.3 million in local community and regional economy. While the Coalition is investing in the project, Council is managing the delivery of the project.

The granted funding was a 2016 election commitment by former Liberal Member for Macquarie, Louise Markus.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is back, raising money for Cancer Council ERIN MAMO

ne Australian is diagnosed with cancer approximately every five minutes, which is the length of an average tea break.

This month, Cancer Council is calling on Blue Mountains locals to get involved in their annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, to raise money for cancer research.

Maria Laria, who co-owns Mountain Fresh Growers in Winmalee, is preparing to host her eighth morning tea, which will be held this Saturday, May 27.

Ms Laria started fundraising for Cancer Council after her father, Joe, passed away from lung cancer.

She has since raised over $17,000 for the charity.

“After my Dad passed away, I saw the ad on TV for the Biggest Morning Tea and I wanted to do something to help, so I registered to hold an event,” Ms Laria said.

“It’s such a good cause, everyone is touched by cancer and this is a great community event where we can all come together and help.”

Ms Laria and her family, who have owned the fruit and veggie shop in Winmalee for 11 years, are now busily trialling cupcake recipes and gathering

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is back materials for this Saturday’s morning tea.

On the day, there will be a range of cakes and cupcakes as well as cake pops, biscuits, jelly and lots of other goodies available for purchase at the stall, which will be located in the middle of Winmalee Shopping Centre.

The morning tea will also feature a big raffle, which includes the major prize of

a $100 Coles Supermarket gift voucher.

Other items to be won include a porcelain tea set, pizza maker and delicious meat trays.

Cancer Council Australia CEO, Professor Sanchia Aranda, said Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a great way for Aussies to support the one in two Australians who will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85.

“The morning teas that will take place in workplaces, communities and peoples’ homes play a vital role in ensuring Cancer Council can continue to provide a wide range of support services across Australia to those affected by cancer,” he said.

The funds raised by this year’s events across Australia will go towards providing almost 60,000 Australians with information about cancer via Cancer Council’s info line and over $1.6million in financial assistance to those in need.

In addition to support services, Cancer Council also works in the areas of cancer research, prevention and advocacy.

Spring has sprung early in the Katoomba CBD, with flowers of all varieties blooming in the Katoomba Street gardens, thanks to volunteers from the local business community and Blue Mountains City Council.

Council is working with a group of dedicated volunteers from the Katoomba Chamber of Commerce to refurbish the garden beds and plant pots throughout the town centre with great results over the past 12 months.

Locals and tourists just love all the colour and smells the flowers bring.

“This partnership is a positive relationship between Council and the community to do something practical,” said Ward 1 Councillor and member of the Katoomba St volunteer group, Kerry Brown.

“It shows what we can achieve when we work together.

“The volunteer group started with the aim of improving the look of Katoomba, the Mountains’ major tourism town, but we quickly discovered we were also improving the happiness of passers-by.”

he floods that hit South East Queensland and the NSW border caused immense damage to property and business in the area. Business Connect sent three of our advisors to the region to help in the recovery centres and they had some interesting findings.

Insurance: Many small businesses had no insurance at all, some due to high risk and prohibitive premiums (over $50k).

However some unknowingly had access to other affordable insurances. Insurance does not have to be all or nothing, so consider what you can insure. Get advice and quotes from three different brokers.

Each will have their own views, expertise and access to a limited panel of insurers.

Business Continuity: If your phone, email, premises or website goes down, can you keep trading – for a day, week or month? Many businesses for weeks after the floods had no property access.

Around 20 per cent of businesses may not reopen, but they also didn’t know how to close!

Lost Records: With the current malware issues, this is a risk for ALL businesses daily. Are your important documents

stored in multiple locations? To access some disaster grants businesses needed to have utility bills, business name records etc. Can you access your banking remotely without your password cheat sheet hidden in your desk? (Not a good idea by the way!).

Back-ups: Have back-ups onsite, offsite (maybe home and office, or even an accountant’s office) and in the cloud. This applies to everything – paper documents, photos, data, templates…

You also have a responsibility to make sure all personal and confidential data is safely maintained and protected from theft and fraud.

Risk Assessment: You can hire people, or conduct your own risk assessments.

For each potential risk on a scale of high, medium and low, assess the likelihood and impact of that risk occurring.

This creates a matrix. If a risk has high likelihood and high impact, make sure to reduce or mitigate that risk through procedures (like backing up), insurance or other action.

Disasters can occur at any time. Prepare ahead, and your future will be secure.

ogether they’ve taken a musical journey through the British Isles and the Southern Skies and now singer Katie Noonan (pictured right) and guitarist Karin Schaupp (pictured left) are diving into the world of Latin American music on their latest album, ‘Songs of the Latin Skies’.

Exploring the sounds of the great South American songbook – including bossa nova, salsa, samba and tango – was an obvious choice for the incredibly talented and experienced duo. “The guitar has been at the centrepoint of that music for centuries, so it was kind of a fairly logical next step because we just had such an incredible wealth of

material to choose from,� Katie said.

Coming from very different musical backgrounds has provided the duo with a broad range of skills to draw from. “I’m across the jazz and pop worlds and Karin is really across the classical world, so we bring different strengths and we can learn from each other,� Katie said.

Her collaboration with Karin is just one of many projects Katie has worked on throughout her musical career.

The busy working mum has performed with several bands including george and Elixir, along with solo projects and collaborations with fellow artists.

For the singer/songwriter, working with Karin has become a familiar place to return to over the years. “It’s like putting on a pair of comfy pyjamas,� she laughed.

Audiences first got to know Katie in the early ‘00s through the band george.

With an impossibly perfect voice she

won many fans’ hearts, and those fans were no doubt over the moon when george recently played a series of shows to celebrate 20 years since they first took to the stage. “It was really interesting because when we started out I was a young girl becoming a woman and now I’m a mother and a wife,� Katie said.

As for whether it’s the start of a new era for george, that’s a pretty firm no... for the

time being. “It was kind of really feeling like a one off thing,� she said. “It made sense to go back but I don’t think we have any plans to continue making music, at least not at this stage.�

Healthy options to beat those hearty winter cravings We all chase a bit of comfort food during the colder months, but there’s plenty of tasty, healthy alternatives available for us to try...

We’re coming into that time of the year when we start to crave hearty, warming, comfort foods.

Unfortunately this can often translate into high fat, high salt, nutrient-lacking foods.

If you’re looking for the comfort factor, without bingeing on hot chips, here’s some tips to get you started.

Bake those veggies Salad just doesn’t cut it at this time of year, so instead try baking vegetables with some olive oil and your favourite seasonings such as garlic or thyme. Add a little gravy and you’ve got vegetables that even the fussiest kids will enjoy. To save time you can also bake a load of vegetables to reheat over the coming days.

Rethink the soup Some varieties of soup can be a little watery and boring, so if you’re after something with a bit more personality noodle soup is the way to go. Whether you like a Malaysian laksa, a Thai tom yum goong, a Japanese udon, a Vietnamese pho or a simple favourite like chicken

noodle soup, these dishes tend to be quite hearty, with plenty of vegetables and loads of flavour.

Warm up your breakfast Cold mornings are about as appealing as a hot dog in a lettuce leaf, but you can make those early hours a little more enjoyable by swapping soggy cereal for a warming bowl of oats. If you hate oats, like I used to, try getting creative with added extras like crunchy peanut butter, a little brown sugar and slices of banana.

It’s also good to remember that while we think of certain foods as ‘breakfast foods’

org Gartelmann is a naturally curious fellow, something that, together with low yields in some years from his own Hunter Valley vineyard, has led him to look further afield to augment his grape supply.

Initially it was to relatively nearby NSW regions such as Orange, Mudgee and Rylestone, but a couple of years ago the search was widened further.

“The 2014 vintage began with promise, with some excellent fruit harvested, but the very low yields inspired us to look at various options for blending,” said Jorg.

“We sourced a number of small parcels of fruit from outside of the region and experimented with various blends. A South Australian Clare Valley component complemented our Hunter Valley fruit beautifully, adding swaths of complexity and further depth of flavour to the Pokolbin material.”

And so it was that Jorg and his wife Jan’s flagship red, the Gartelmann Diedrich Shiraz, named in honour of his grandfather, which has been traditionally made from old-vine shiraz from the Hunter Valley, for the 2014 vintage includes 44 per cent Clare Valley shiraz.

As Jorg points out, while he is constantly aiming to create single vineyard wines he certainly isn’t the first to blend South Australian fruit into Hunter Valley wines.

It’s something that was even done by the late, great, truly iconic Maurice O’Shea.

The inclusion of Clare Valley material hasn’t detracted one jot from my love for this traditionally rich, opulent red that rightly sits at the top of the Gartelmann tree.

he Panthers U20s team will seek back to back titles while the Panthers Opens team are hoping for a bit of luck this season when the second Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) competition gets underway tomorrow, May 24.

Featuring eight franchises from across the state, the NNSWPL is a mid-week netball competition aimed at attracting the best current and emerging talent within NSW. Made up of players and officials from Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury Netball Associations as well as recruits from around the state and country, the Panthers Opens team will once again be coached by Netball NSW Hall of Famer Lisa Beehag.

After a shocking debut season due to injury and player availability, Beehag is hoping her second year in charge of the Panthers is a much more fruitful one.

“Injuries and players unavailable due to clashes with the representative season really hurt us last year,” she told the Record.

The Opens team have recruited exceptionally well for the upcoming 2017 season, with a number of external players – outside of the three local associations – joining the ranks.

“We’ve recruited two players from the Australian Netball League in defender Hayley Mulheron, who is the captain of Scotland,

as well as Leilani Solaese, who has just been named captain of the Samoan side.

Meanwhile, the Panthers U20s team will look to defend their title when they take to the court this Wednesday evening.

Many of the 2016 squad will return this year including Coach of the Year Jaqua Heddle.
