Police are now investigating the break-in, and are appealing for the medals to be returned. The Widow says the medals are the “last link” she has to her husband, who passed away 13 years ago.

Heartless thief takes medals ERIN MAMO

hree World War II medals have been stolen during a break and enter in Glenbrook last month.

On Tuesday, October 18, Widow Sue Summers arrived home from taking her mother to lunch to find that someone had forced entry into her home.

On greater investigation, Mrs Summers found that a laptop, iPad and three World War II medals that her late husband, William, had been awarded were gone.

Mrs Summers’ grandmother’s engagement ring and a sentimental watch were also stolen.

“It’s very sad,” Mrs Summers told the Record.

“These medals that were taken were the last link we had to my late husband who passed away 13 years ago.”

The three medals that were taken are confirmed as an ‘Australian Service Medal 1939-1945’, a ‘War Medal 1939-1945’, and a ‘Pacific Star’ medal which Mr Summers received for his time stationed in Borneo during the Second World War. Inspector Peter Scheinflug, from Blue Mountains Local Area Command, said Police are now appealing for public assistance to locate the whereabouts of the medals.

Photo: Melinda Jane “If anyone in the general public saw any unusual behaviour in the vicinity of Levy Street, Glenbrook, on the day in question or is aware of the whereabouts of the three medals they should contact Police immediately,” Mr Scheinflug said.

Mr Scheinflug said he is not aware of the monetary value of the three medals, but they may have some collectible value.

“The medals have more significant sentimental value to the family they were

taken from than monetary value and we would certainly like to be able to return them,” he said.

“Hopefully the people who took the medals will do the right thing and return them.”

Police took forensics and DNA from the scene of the break and enter and are now awaiting results.

Katoomba’s CBD set for a re-vamp?

Council agrees to look at establishing advisory committee to overhaul Katoomba’s outdated Master Plan ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains City Council has taken the first step in improving Katoomba’s CBD. At last Tuesday’s Council meeting, Councillor Kevin Schreiber took to the floor to support a motion to establish a council advisory committee that will look at transforming Katoomba’s CBD. “I’d like to put forward the motion that Council receives a report on the feasibility of establishing a council advisory committee to establish a Master Plan for Katoomba’s CBD,” Cr Schreiber said at the meeting.

“We need to make Katoomba what it should be, a tourist destination that is the first place people come to when they stop off in the upper Blue Mountains.”

Mr Schreiber said the area from Yeamans Bridge to the top of Katoomba Street needs a re-vamp, as well as the train station and the top of Parke Street down to Pioneer Place.

“Katoomba needs a tourist information centre at the top of Katoomba Street, clean 24-hour toilets, increased low-level parking near the information centre and a comprehensive traffic management

plan to alleviate the daily congestion, not to mention the train station” Cr Schreiber said.

“Thousands of tourists flock to the Blue Mountains each year, many by train and the facilities aren’t up to scratch.”

Mr Schreiber strongly believes if Katoomba can be upgraded and recognised as a tourist destination with a visitors centre then businesses and employment would follow.

“The tourism industry would follow if there was an upgrade to Katoomba,” he said.

“New restaurants and boutique stores would all recognise the potential if tourists were coming into town to go to the information centre.

“Employment would also boom, which we greatly need in this area.”

Cr Schreiber’s motion was passed unanimously with all Councillors in favour at the recent meeting.

Now, Cr Schreiber will work with the Council to develop the report on costings.

If an advisory committee is then established it will look at developing the new Master Plan for Katoomba.

Katoomba’s current Master Plan is more than 20-years-old and is in desperate need of an overhaul.

$38 million up for grabs in lost super Mountains residents have a whopping bounty of unclaimed super to seize ERIN MAMO & DALE DRINKWATER

hile quick to claim their winnings from the 2016 Melbourne Cup, Blue Mountains locals have proven very slow at claiming their share of millions of dollars in lost superannuation.

From Lapstone to Katoomba, there is a whopping $38 million that is sitting unclaimed in residents’ superannuation accounts.

In the hope of winning big, 3.2 million committed punters across NSW had a flutter on last year’s Melbourne Cup race through Tabcorp alone, spending $54 million.

But why aren’t we as committed to retrieving money that’s already ours?

John Richards from Richards Financials in Katoomba believes that most people aren’t thinking about their super because they are a long way off retirement.

“Super is a funny thing, people don’t really think about it I don’t think and aren’t following up on it until later in life,” Mr Richards said.

“I also think these days most people have many different super accounts from each time they change jobs.”

Through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), lost super can be tracked and then

By doing a free search on the ATO’s website you can find funds that are sitting with them as well as other superannuation providers.

Mr Richards said most people who have at least two superannuation accounts have no strategic reason why.

“We’ve seen people with as many as 30

different super funds in extreme cases,” Mr Richards said.

“They’ve moved houses and they aren’t getting the letters from the super funds so they’ve forgotten about that particular fund.”

Give expired gift cards a try NSW consumers are being encouraged to dust off their expired gift cards and attempt to redeem them.

Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said that Australians spend around $2.5 billion a year on gift cards but arbitrary expiry dates mean millions of dollars go to waste.

“Consumers often fail to redeem their gift cards and those who try to use them after the expiry date, do so with mixed success,” he said.

“Gift cards operate like a contract. After the expiry date, it is really at the whim of the trader whether they choose to honour the contract.

“We’re calling on NSW consumers to make a special effort this week to dig out their expired gift cards and vouchers and try their luck redeeming them.”

Fair Trading has established an online survey to enable disgruntled and pleasantly surprised expired gift card owners to report their experience. The survey is available at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

“Fair Trading’s experience is that many retailers are prepared to extend the expiry date of cards when requested and we are encouraging consumers to ask the question and report their experience,” Mr Dominello said.

So far this year NSW Fair Trading has received 271 complaints relating to gift cards.

Gift cards are a popular present option but consumers may not be aware of terms and conditions.

Man to front court after being found with replica sword

About 4.30pm on Thursday, October 20, Police attended the area of Bathurst Street and Parke Street, Katoomba, where they located a man carrying a one metre long replica Lord of the Rings sword.

The man aged 20-years-old was also said to be carrying a long metal pole with the intent to use the two items in self defence in a neighbourhood dispute.

Police seized the items and the Katoomba man has been issued with a future service court attendance notice for December 5, 2016.

From a huge trick or treat event through to entertainment from Jason Jackson and plenty of great festivities, the event was a huge success.

Of course, the highlight was the tremendous costumes, with plenty of people getting into the dress-up spirit to celebrate the scariest day of the year.

The event is likely to return in 2017.

About 8am on Sunday, October 23, a 22-year-old man entered the Blaxland rail corridor and walked along the train tracks from Blaxland train station towards Glenbrook.

He was sighted in Blaxland by two Transport NSW employees who contacted the police.

Police attended the scene and found the man walking along a dirt track east of the lines.

When police called out to the man he ran into the bush and officers chased him for approximately 500 metres, ending up in Prince Street, Glenbrook where the man was arrested.

During a search of the accused, police found a green plastic bag that had two

spray cans in it and a number of black textas. Police also observed that the man had black texta on both of his palms.

The accused has now been charged with intentionally marking premises without consent, trespassing and possessing graffiti implements.

He is set to appear in court later this year.

Woman’s birthday party takes unlucky turn

A 50-year-old woman has broken her right leg during birthday celebrations at Hatters Hideout Cave in Daragan.

The woman was celebrating with friends on Friday, October 21, with a bush walk to the cave and had to be rescued on the track when she became injured.

Police Rescue, Paramedics and SES attended the scene and the woman was treated by paramedics before being taken to Lithgow Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old woman has been rescued in Blackheath after she tripped down some stairs while bush walking.

At about 12.30pm on October 19, the woman was walking along a clifftop between Govetts Leap and Evans lookout when she tripped and injured her right leg.

Other bush walkers saw the woman and called for an ambulance after speaking with her.

Submissions open for rainforest art display ERIN MAMO

n art exhibition of a different kind is calling on Blue Mountains artists to apply to join its display.

‘Sculpture at Scenic World’ is inviting artist submissions for Australia’s only exhibition located in a rainforest.

From April 7 to May 7, 2017, Scenic World at Katoomba will showcase artwork from local, national and international artists all vying for the chance to win $20,000 in its annual art exhibition held on the rainforest floor.

Artists are being encouraged to enter the event before the November 28 deadline.

However before they do, Exhibition Manager Justin Morrissey is urging potential applicants to get in touch with Scenic World, and if possible actually visit the site where the exhibition will be held to ensure they get a feeling for the surrounds and what is required.

“It’s particularly important that artists visit us at Scenic World before they make a submission as we’re looking for immersive and interactive artworks that respond to the environment,” Mr Morrissey said.

Earlier this year, Michael McIntyre took home $20,000 when he won the annual competition.

Mr McIntyre said being a part of ‘Sculpture at Scenic World’ was a rewarding experience with many positives flowing from his win.

“Exhibiting in the Jamison Valley transformed my work’s meaning, scale and presence,” he said.

“Winning the award has given me greater freedom to work unencumbered by financial concerns and has assisted me in funding an arts residency in Paris.”

Each year, all of the artist submissions are assessed by an independent selection panel, which will be announced after submissions close.

The 2016 panel included Felicity Fenner, Director of the University of New South Wales Galleries and Artist Claire Healy, who has had her artwork displayed all over the world.

‘Sculpture at Scenic World’ has supported more than 170 exhibiting artists over the past five years, attracting over 280,000 visitors to ride the world’s steepest railway into the Jurassic rainforest to view the sculpture and installations.

The deadline for submissions for the event is Monday, November 28 and successful artists will be notified on Monday, December 5.

Evaluating a share for inclusion into a portfolio can certainly be accomplished innumerable ways. From the ultra-sophisticated methods of a professional ‘quant’ fund manager, right down to using a dart as the main selection tool, every investor will have their preferred methodology. Most certainly though, careful analysis of any equity is required in order to create a portfolio that abides by our personal tolerance for risk.

It is therefore a good idea to have at least a couple of indicators which will aid us in establishing which prospective investment candidates may be suitable for us. One such example is the ‘beta’ value, which is calculated for

all listed securities.

Quite simply, a share’s ‘beta’ is a numerical representation of how an individual share’s price will move in relation to the total market movement to which it belongs. It is derived from a simple calculation that provides a number either greater, or less than 1.0 which we then compare to the market benchmark (1.0).

As an indicator of market risk, the more responsive a share is to market movements, the higher its ‘beta’ number. And subsequently, the less responsive, the lower its ‘beta’ number.

Therefore a high ‘beta’ will indicate a greater tendency for outperformance whilst lower ‘beta’ numbers will normally underperform the market. By knowing a share’s ‘beta’ enables you to select suitable securities for a portfolio depending on your appetite for risk. The good news is that share betas are calculated and freely available through numerous avenues such as direct broker sites etc. So there is no reason not to add this analytical tool to your ‘toolbox’ and improve your share selection.

f you are a regular reader of this column, you will know that I do like my motivational quotes. I think they have the potential to keep me focused and positive, even when things are not going to plan. There is, however, a broad spectrum when it comes to the quality and usefulness of the quotes that we can come across.

For those on social media, you have no doubt seen your share of cheesy quotes, often accompanied by a background image of a rainbow or a cute kitten. The following examples spring to mind: • “Keep calm and carry on” • “You have to look through the rain to see the rainbow” • “Be yourself” • “Things only get as bad as you are willing to let them” Some of these have some truth to them and having a positive outlook on life is vital. But motivational quotes are subjective: what one person loves may go straight over the head of another.

And when a quote is overused or offered as a clichéd response to a situation, they are far from useful.

In addition, a sentiment isn’t going to change the world around you – often when you are in need of motivation there are circumstances out of your control. All the motivational quotes in the world are not going to change that.

However, here are some of my favourite quotes that are hopefully not in your ‘overused’ or ‘clichéd’ categories!

ome of Sydney’s most dynamic musicians will converge on the beautiful Hydro Majestic later this month as the hotel hosts its final Majestic Concert for

the year.

‘Symphony Under the Stars’ will be the third concert by The Metropolitan Orchestra at the hotel and promises to live up to the grand musical traditions that the Hydro is famous for, according to Escarpment Group General Manager Ralf Bruegger.

Mr Bruegger said the iconic venue has played host to some of the biggest names in modern opera during its first two Majestic Concerts and the final concert for the year will not disappoint.

“We’ve had some of the biggest stars of modern opera perform at the Hydro this year, so I’d say the grand traditions of culture and elegance that the Hydro Majestic is renowned for have well and truly been revived,” he said.

“The music, the dining, the view and the magnificent heritage building itself combine to create unforgettable occasions.’’

Lead by Chief Conductor, Sarah-Grace Williams, The Metropolitan Orchestra is

recognised as one of the country’s most versatile and vibrant.

A 55-piece showcase will include a program of Mendelssohn’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture’, KatsChernin’s ‘Ornamental Air’ and Andrew Doyle displaying the exceptional range of the clarinet in the lyrical ‘Symphony No 7’ by Beethoven.

Over the seven years that the orchestra have been playing together, the group have performed alongside a number of established artists, including Marina Prior, Anthony Warlow, John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John, James Morrison and Kate Ceberano.

The orchestra has also been involved in special events such as the BBC’s ‘Blue Planet’ and ‘Planet Earth in Concert’, ‘Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular’, ‘Opera in the Vineyards’, the National Rugby League grand final and sailing the high seas as the resident orchestra aboard the Bravo! Cruise of the Performing Arts.

Symphony Under the Stars will be held at the Hydro Majestic Hotel at 52-88 Great Western Highway, Medlow Bath, from 5.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday, November 19.

The cost of the event is $150 per person and includes cocktails and canapes, a two-course dinner, a four-hour beverage package and the concert.

Tarzan swings onto the small screen this week with the release of ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ on DVD and Blu-ray.

The story picks up after the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgard) has left the African jungle with his beloved wife Jane (Margot Robbie).

Now living a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, he is invited back to the Congo to act as a trade emissary of Parliament.

Unfortunately Tarzan is unaware that he’s being used as a pawn in a deadly game of revenge and greed, which has all been masterminded

by Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz).

Along with Skarsgard, Robbie and

Waltz, ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ also features Samuel L. Jackson as historian George Washington Williams.

Oliver has played lovable character Lou Carpenter since 1988 but his appearances on the ELEVEN soap have been scaled back in recent years. Fortunately his character will not be killed off, so there’s a good chance we may see Lou on ‘Neighbours’ again one day in the future.

Ê I must say I was very happy to hear the exciting news that Channel Seven is bringing back ‘First Dates’. I absolutely loved this show when it aired earlier this year. ‘First Dates’ returns tonight (Tuesday, November 1) at 7.30pm. Forget the beach body diet, just make simple changes Making subtle changes to your diet can make a huge difference to your health, and most importantly, it’s achievable!

I love the warmer weather. But I have to admit there’s one thing I do hate about summer: the ridiculous ‘beach body’ diets that pop up in the media.

Rather than inspiring healthy change, these articles just end up shaming you into feeling like your body isn’t fit for public viewing, unless of course you live on juices and lose 20 kilos in a month.

It’s all pretty ridiculous really, especially considering summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and make some realistic, sustainable changes to your health.

So this week, instead of giving you a boring, impossible-to-follow diet plan, I want to run through a few tips to help you enjoy summer while still making healthy choices.

Go one-for-one This is a trick I’ve been using lately when I’m craving something that’s not so healthy. Instead of denying myself the food I want, I pair it with a nutritious option.

For example, if I want a big bowl of hot chips I have half a bowl and pair it with my favourite vegetable or salad. This way

you’re satisfying the craving while still getting the nutrients your body needs.

Start simple You know that chocolate bar you have every afternoon? Replace it with your favourite summer fruit (frozen fruit is great for a cool snack on a hot day) or a handful of your favourite nuts.

It may seem like a small change, but with that one swap you’ve reduced your discretionary food intake and increased your intake of nutritious plant-based foods.

Get more H2O Hotter days mean that keeping hydrated is even more important than ever. If you find water tasteless and boring, then put

together a water bottle filled with fruit slices such as lemon, lime or orange and a fresh summery herb like mint. Water is a lot more inviting when it has a little flavour.

Use that body You’re more likely to improve your health by actually going to the beach, rather than trying an impossible-tomaintain beach body diet. Get together a healthy picnic lunch and spend the afternoon swimming and playing ball sports on the sand.

It’s much more fun than a juice cleanse and you’ll be more likely to stick with simpler healthy lifestyle changes.

eter Logan has been making Chardonnay at his Logan Wines at Orange in the NSW Central West for some 19 years now, yet he still muses over whether he’s got it as perfect as has been his goal.

“In fact, I’m not sure that goal will ever be reached,” says Peter, “even though every year we continue to evolve this wine towards an even better place”. And that includes as a sideline to that continuing evolution, now achieving exceptional sales not just here in Australia, but throughout Asia and in northern Europe as well.

Made from cold climate fruit (his vineyards are some 970m above sea level), Logan Chardonnay has always been a wine of elegance and sophistication, and with his latest, now-available 2015, Peter strove to create a drop that would be “elegant but not anaemic, savoury with a touch of fruit, and having minerality with texture”.

And beautifully balanced, it boasts a nice mix of subtle fruit flavours, plus a touch of almond, on a mineral palate with a gentle smoothness to it. And while it spent some time in oak prior to bottling, this has not overpowered the wine’s fruit characters.

Pay $25 and enjoy it with shellfish, a seafood pie or chicken terrine. Is that perfect?

One to note: Although launched only in 1996, the Barossa Valley’s Pepperjack Wines have amassed an extraordinary following of devotees to their bold, rich and vibrant reds that are made purely with steak lovers in mind.

Working as a healthcare professional, I see people in pain every day. Despite advances in medicine and science, pain levels continue to rise, with one in five Australians suffering from chronic pain.

Poor education about pain contributes to ongoing pain, so here are three things you need to know about pain.

Pain, tissue damage and pathology do not always correlate Too often people get radiographic imaging and are instantly under the impression that the findings on the report are the reason behind their pain. For some patients, imaging can provide evidence of a significant underlying pathology that can explain their pain and guide further treatment. However, in a large percentage of patients, imaging has no or little correlation with clinical findings and can provide a ‘red herring’. It is essential to find a correlation between symptoms and imaging results to consider the results significant.

Pain is from the brain Pain doesn’t exist until the brain tells

us it does. The brain protects itself from danger. Any situation your brain perceives as harmful will increase your likelihood of pain. However, the amount of tissue damage doesn’t always correlate with the amount of pain experienced. For example, have you ever got a big bruise but can’t remember how you got it? But then you get a tiny paper cut and it hurts a great deal. This is what makes pain so complex!

When we think of drowning incidents we often think of young children and backyard pools, however the Royal Life National Drowning Report contains some surprising, and alarming, statistics on adult incidents and fatalities in the water.

The 2016 Report shows almost one fifth of deaths (19 per cent) occurred in people aged 25-34 years, with 52 deaths recorded.

This was higher than any other age group and a 27 per cent increase against the 10 year average. Alcohol consumption was also a major risk factor for drowning, with 15 per cent of people found to have a positive reading for alcohol in their bloodstream at the time, and of those who had consumed alcohol, 40 per cent recorded a blood alcohol concentration that was four times the legal limit.

Males accounted for 83 per cent of drowning deaths – also the highest percentage in the past 10 years.

It’s obvious more education is still needed, and many local adults are now seeking swimming lessons, from teenagers tired of not being able to join in at

social occasions on the water, to people in their 80s wanting to tick off items on their bucket list that involve the water, and everyone in between.

Terry Spinks is Operation Manager at Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s, but still teaches adult private lessons on a weekly basis because of the personal reward it brings to teach an important and potentially lifesaving skill.

Mr Spinks said: “Learning to swim opens that person up to a whole range of new possibilities and experiences.

I’ve had students come to learn to swim because they want to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, or confidently take the kids to a water park. Some are inspired to learn when their children do, and about 90 per cent of my adult students have had

a fright in the water that has acted as the catalyst for them to pick up the phone and enquire about lessons – which is sometimes the scariest part of the process”.

In addition to Australian residents, 25 overseas tourists drowned last year, with almost half (44 per cent) of these visitors coming from Asian countries.

Terry added: “The majority of the adult swimming lessons are people from immigrant backgrounds, and the common theme is that they simply didn’t grow up with the emphasis we place on learning to swim in Australian society. We have a real United Nations feel, from English and Irish to African and Indian people, Indigenous Australians, the list goes on.

It’s never too late to learn, and everyone is welcome”.

With a great personality and a happy-go-lucky attitude this girl would suit most homes. She would love a family that can take her for a walk daily and keep up with her training as well as offer her quiet time inside of a night.

Sadly this guy has been overlooked for 3 weeks now and is desperate for a loving home. He has the 3 traits that a shelter dog gets overlooked for, he Brindle, he’s big and he’s a staffy x. I bet if you were to come and meet him you would want to add him to your family! He’s a gentle boy that sits for treats and takes them from you nicely.

Just look at that face, have you ever seen a dog so handsome! With a huge smile and a great personality this fella would make a family very happy!

He is only just over a year old and would love to spend the rest of his life with an active family that can keep him busy but also enjoy quiet time as well.

We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.

ayne Peckham, who played in the inaugural Penrith Panthers first grade side in 1967, has passed away aged 72.

Peckham, officially listed as the ninth player to wear the Panthers jersey in the top grade, died last Monday.

The Panthers paid tribute to the foundation player on social media when his passing was made public on Friday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” the club said on Twitter.

Peckham made 41 appearances for Penrith between 1967 and 1969 before joining Canterbury in 1970.

He scored 18 tries over his six seasons in top grade football.

Peckham returned to Penrith Stadium earlier this year, when the club paid tribute to its 1967 team in round two.

He primarily played in the centres and apart from his try scoring ability was known for his toughness in defence.

Peckham was originally from Moree and had played for Northern NSW against the 1966 touring Great Britain team, before coming to the attention of the Panthers.
