Glenbrook ballet star en pointe Gifted dancer accepted into the prestigious Australian Ballet School ERIN MAMO

lenbrook ballet star, Nicholas Stevanovic, is set to shine bright with the Australian Ballet School.

At only ten years of age, Nicholas, a student at Glenbrook Ballet Theatre, was recently accepted into the Australian Ballet School’s Level One Interstate Training Program.

“I am really excited about getting into the program and getting the chance to extend my training and work hard towards being a professional dancer,” Nicholas said.

The Mt Riverview local auditioned for the interstate program back in July, along with around 700 other hopefuls.

The interstate training program allows a small number of gifted ballet students the chance to travel from interstate and overseas to attend classes with the Australian Ballet School based in Melbourne.

Hearing the good news last week, Nicholas and his family are now planning to fly to Melbourne next year for the program, something Nicholas is particularly excited about.

Next year, he will also travel into Sydney’s CBD regularly to attend masterclasses and workshops that are all part of

Man murdered in Leura home A 28-year-old man accused of murdering a man at Leura last Thursday has fronted court.

Sporting a short, light brown beard, Henry Walcott appeared slightly dazed as he briefly faced Penrith Local Court via audio visual link from Amber Laurel prison on Friday.

His lawyer did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused.

It comes after police were called to an address on Kings Road, Leura just after midday on Thursday, November 10.

Officers attended and located the body of a 34-year-old man in the home.

Walcott was arrested at the scene and taken to Katoomba Police Station where he was later charged with the man’s murder.

Walcott is yet to enter a plea and is due back in court on January 20 next year.

The young dancer, who has been with Glenbrook Ballet Theatre for the last five years, currently studies classical ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dance at the Theatre.

Glenbrook Ballet Theatre Principal, Jessie Garbellini, said the school is very proud of Nicholas.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for Nicho-

las,” Ms Garbellini said.

“He has worked hard to achieve this recognition and has a lot of potential with a big future ahead of him.”

Nicholas is the second of Glenbrook Ballet Theatre’s students to be accepted into the prestigious program.

13-year-old Amelia Perri has also been re-accepted into the 2017 program for the fourth year in a row.

The Federal Government has approved the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek.

The decision, which was announced late last week has been condemned by Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill.

“Astonishingly, the Minister for Environment and Energy has approved an EIS for an airport with unknown flight paths”, Cr Greenhill said.

“How is this even possible? It is ridiculous in the extreme.”

Lending our homeless a helping hand People living rough in the Mountains have their details captured in a bid to get them off the streets ERIN MAMO

ast week, Wentworth Housing took to the streets of the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury in the early hours of the morning to connect with individuals experiencing homelessness.

As part of Wentworth’s Heading Home: Ending Homelessness Here program, the Record attended one of the early morning sessions with case workers and volunteers as part of registry week, and visited local areas where people experiencing homelessness have been identified.

Wentworth Case Worker, Vanessa Thomas, said the three days during registry week were about making contact with individuals and capturing their information so that they can receive assistance.

“We are aware of most of the people experiencing homelessness in the area,” Ms Thomas said.

“So these three days are about finding them and capturing detailed information so that we can get them into the system and start to help them find a place to stay.”

Some individuals were happy to tell their story of how they became homeless to the Record.

Wentworth Housing case workers and volunteers are working together to end homelessness in our area the last three months, was one of these people that case workers identified.

Wentworth weren’t previously aware of him, but noticed him on the street during the session and approached him.

In his thirties, Daniel, who has experience in administration and wants to work in web design, is currently homeless because of a falling out he had with his family.

“I had a place to stay but I moved out and it was a bit hard to find my own place because I couldn’t find work and only had the payments from Centrelink,” Daniel

said.

“My family aren’t far away from here but I don’t really seem them that often.”

Daniel said he went to Housing NSW and tried looking for a house when he first became homeless but competition was fierce.

“I applied for a few houses at first, but I kept getting knocked back because there were about 20 or 30 other people applying for the same places.”

Wentworth captured Daniel’s information through a 100-question survey and will now help him communicate with

Housing NSW to get some temporary housing while he looks for his own place.

Ms Thomas said there seems to be this idea that people experiencing homelessness actually chose that lifestyle.

“A lot of people think these people want to be homeless,” Ms Thomas said.

“Nobody wants to be homeless, cold and on the street without any food.”

Wentworth will now work through all the data they collected across the three local government areas and try to get each person experiencing homelessness into housing as soon as possible.

Springwood to play host to onestop-shop expo for job seekers ERIN MAMO

ave you just finished Year 12? Are you looking for a job?

If so, the 2016 Blue Mountains JobShop Expo is coming to Springwood on Wednesday, November 16.

Hosted by the Blue Mountains City Council, JobShop is a mini employment, skills and careers expo that will offer a one-stop-shop for information to help job seekers gain employment, including learning about what jobs are currently available in the Blue Mountains, what employers are looking for and how to successfully apply for their jobs.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said the expo, which will be held at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, is a great way for residents to meet local employers face-toface and is free to anyone looking for a job or a career.

“The Council are proud to support this event and give residents the opportunity to meet employers, training organisations, educational institutions and employment support services all under the one roof,” Cr Greenhill said.

Right now employers from Woolworths, Coles, the Fairmont Resort, Australian Defence Force, Council and Oasis Horticulture are recruiting in the region.

Current Trainee, Jennifer Pallister and previous Trainee and now Seedlings Grower, Warwick Seach Oasis Horticulture, based in Yellow Rock runs a successful Nursery Apprenticeship program where individuals can obtain an accredited Certificate III in Horticulture.

Oasis will be at the JobShop Expo and are currently recruiting for two new apprentices to join their team.

Representatives from TAFE will also be on hand to offer advice on apprenticeships or traineeships, as will support organisations like Max Employment and Nova Employment.

Hazelbrook man arrested and charged with 12 offences

A 62-year-old from Hazelbrook was arrested and charged on Thursday, November 3 with 12 offences including possession of a fire arm.

Police were called to a Hazelbrook address after reports of domestic violence were made.

Upon arriving at the location, Police found three unauthorised and unregistered firearms and cannabis.

The man was later charged with Possess Unauthorised Firearm (x3), Possess Unregistered Firearm (x3), Not Keep Firearm Safely (x3), Possess/Use Prohibited Weapon Without Permit (silencer), Possess Ammunition without Holding a Licence/Permit/Authority and Possess Prohibited Drug (41.9g of cannabis).

54yo Lawson man to face court on cannabis charges

A 54-year-old man from Lawson was arrested and charged on Thursday, November 3 after Police attended a domestic violence report and found cannabis at the scene.

Police were called to the Lawson address and found 16 zip-locked bags containing cannabis totalling 492.45 grams of the drug.

The man was charged with Supply Prohibited Drug, Possess Prohibited Drug and Domestic Common Assault.

Injured female bushwalker rescued at Wentworth Pass

A 28-year-old female who injured herself while bushwalking has been assisted by emergency services.

The woman was bushwalking at Wentworth Pass between Sylvia Falls and Lodore Falls on Saturday, November 5 when she injured her ankle.

Emergency services, including Police, attended the scene and the bushwalker was assisted out and taken to Katoomba Hospital for further treatment.

Man caught drink driving while filling up his car

At about 12.05am on Sunday, November 6, a 32-year-old from Orange was arrested and charged with drink driving at Hazelbrook.

The male drove into the Caltex Service Station where Police were purchasing petrol.

He began speaking to the Police and telling them that he had been banned from the Mt Panorama race track in Bathurst.

Police immediately observed that the man seemed to be intoxicated and initiated a breath test.

The breath test result came up positive with a blood alcohol reading of 0.105 being recorded.

The man was charged with Drive With Mid-Range PCA and had his licence suspended.

Upon being arrested the man continued to speak to Police.

“You should be patting me on the back; I’m a legend,” he said.

Talented muso sought to star in new local movie ERIN MAMO

lenbrook Film Director Heath Davis is calling on local musicians and bands to appear in his latest

movie.

The creator of the successful local film ‘Broke’ is now planning a ‘Battle of the Bands’ where local musicians will rock it out to win the chance to perform their own song in his latest film offering, ‘Book Week’.

Mr Davis believes there is a lot of great talent in the Blue Mountains just waiting to be unearthed “We want to showcase the talent in the Mountains and give unsigned acts a platform to be heard,” he said.

“We also want locals to share in the process of making a movie.”

‘Battle of the Bands’ will run every Sunday from November 27 to January 8, Christmas Day and New Years Eve excluded.

Local bands are invited to take part in the event which will be held at the Aussie Arms Hotel in Penrith.

On the final night, a panel of judges including Triple M’s Mark Geyer and members of the ARIA award-winning band ‘The Jezabels’ will choose and

announce the winner.

Mr Davis said he is looking for fresh, emotive and passionate artists that offer a point of difference “We’re looking for an original voice that cuts straight from the heart,” he said.

“Nothing manufactured or contrived or simply trying to crowd please, something unique and genuine.”

‘Book Week’ is a comedy/drama about a jaded English teacher who is forced to re-evaluate his life after his latest book is passed over as the work of one of his students.

The film will be produced and shot entirely in the Blue Mountains and Penrith regions and will feature some well known talent, including Brendan Cowell from ‘Beneath Hill 60’, Susan Prior from ‘Animal Kingdom’ and Steve Bastoni who is currently starring in Channel Ten drama ‘The Wrong Girl’.

The ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition will officially be launched at a special screening of ‘Broke’ at the Aussie Arms Hotel at 351 High Street, Penrith on Wednesday, November 23 from 8.30pm.

In 1813, explorers Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth carved their initials into a tree 5km west of Katoomba. The tree died in the 1950s but the three metre stump of the tree remains to this day, adjacent to the Great Western Highway.

Time and progress often ruins many traditions, but it was great to see so many people stop and pay their respects to those who fought for our country on Friday. We will remember them.

Life-saving discounts for local pets Low income earners and pensioners offered subsidised vet services ERIN MAMO

RSPCA NSW, Blue Mountains Volunteer Branch and Blue Mountains City Council have partnered with local vets for the second year in a row to offer low income earners and pensioners living in the Blue Mountains the discounted services.

RSPCA NSW Blue Mountains Shelter Manager, Nicole Balzer, said the service hopes to provide desexing and microchipping to over 120 local cats and dogs.

“The RSPCA Blue Mountains Volunteer Branch has raised $15,000 for this program which is $5,000 more than last year,” Ms Balzer said.

“Blue Mountains City Council has also pitched in another $5,000, so we’re confident this will make a life-saving difference to many pets in the area.”

As part of the program, pet owners wont have to pay more than $50 per animal for their entire appointment or services required.

Ms Balzer said desexing, microchipping and vaccinating are all important aspects of responsible pet ownership.

“They are really vital, and unlike collars and ID tags, a microchip lasts an animal a lifetime.”

Eight local veterinarians who took part in the program last year are all participating again this year and are spread out across the region from Blaxland to Blackheath.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said microchips were not painful and helped to significantly reduce the amount of animals that wind up in shelters because their owners can’t be found.

Blue Mountains City Council hosts the Australia Day (Local Citizen of the Year) Awards each year to recognise the achievements of individuals in the community.

Cr Greenhill said he has no doubt that we all know someone that represents the local community at its best.

“Those residents who are role models for us all; who inspire us through their achievements or their selfless contribution to creating a better Blue Mountains,” he said.

Previous recipients of the Blue Mountains Local Citizen of the Year Award have been recognised for their achievements in a broad range of fields, including education, emergency services, community development, safety, cultural events, welfare sports and business.

Wow, how about that, Donald Trump is now the new President of the USA. Who would have thought an ex-reality TV star and bankrupt, with a litany of pending court cases and questionable morals, could possibly achieve the most powerful position in the western world. Putting aside the political implications of his appointment it does though demonstrate just how fragile investment markets can be when these macroeconomic events occur. When news spread of a Trump victory, world markets began plum-

meting in a blind panic, only to rebound 24 hours later when everyone realised he may not be the ogre they first thought.

These events though certainly act as a reminder that macroeconomic events can create havoc with investments and it is very difficult to guard against their affects.

Most investors are familiar with the old saying, “don’t

put all your eggs in the one basket” – the classic risk reduction method. And yes, the process of diversification is the best defence against volatility and when done well works a treat, but not always.

According to the man who ‘wrote the book’ on this stuff, Harry Markowitz, there are actually two types of risk factors affecting our investments; diversifiable risk and non-diversifiable risk.

Which simply means that there are risk factors that can be eliminated through diversification and there are risk factors that can’t be? So there will certainly be times when world events will make your impeccably diversified superannuation fund fall like a lead balloon?

But there can be a bright side. These macroeconomic events always send investors scurrying for the exits which in turn send prices tumbling.

It is at these times that astute investors are given a golden opportunity to increase their investments at much cheaper prices. And guess what, at some point in the future, (one day this time around) that same macroeconomic event, fades into oblivion accompanied by the usual increase to share prices.

uring my first few years of running my business, I would often encourage friends and family to start a business. Gradually, though, I found myself saying it less and less, as I realised that it takes a particular temperament, and a clear understanding of exactly what you are ‘getting yourself into’.

There are certainly some really great things about being your own boss. You can set your own hours, there is no ceiling on what you can earn, and you can often choose the location of your work day. Personally I could never go back to working for someone else! But that doesn’t mean there are not some ever-present realities, including the following: 1. You have ultimate responsibility.

You are responsible for the success or failure of your business. You are responsible for staff and your decisions affect their livelihoods as much as yours.

2. You have no income guarantees.

Whatever financial gains you make depends on what you do, as well as

F r o m opera to plays and musical theatre there’s not many areas of the entertainment industry that she hasn’t been involved in.

It’s this variety that Marina attributes to her longevity in the industry.

“I think that’s why I’ve kept going for 30-plus years,” she said.

“You have to be able to be adaptable in this country and do lots of different things.

“If you’re willing to continue to learn throughout your life and your career then you’ll continue to gain something from all the different projects that you do.”

2016 has been another busy year for Marina, having just finished up a concert tour with Australian tenor Mark Vincent along with a role as Baroness Schraeder in the stage production of ‘The Sound of Music’.

Though it’s a lot to take on for any performer Marina admits she thrives on the busy schedule and the musical theatre environment.

“I love the discipline of eight shows

a week and the camaraderie that you develop,” she said.

“You become like a family when you’re together that much.”

Marina’s next project will see her team up with one of Australia’s best opera singers, Teddy Tahu Rhodes – who’s been described as ‘Opera’s Man Mountain’ – for the duo’s first performance at The Joan.

The show will include a mix of opera arias, musical theatre hits and well-loved popular songs.

It’s not the first time the talented pair have performed together on stage.

“We did some concerts with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra last year and they were fantastic, so I’m really looking forward to it,” Marina said.

“I know him quite well as a colleague, so I’m very comfortable working with him.”

Heading into Christmas Marina will take the stage for one of her most well known roles as part of the star studded line-up at ‘Carols by Candlelight’.

It’s a family tradition for the performer; one that has been passed down through the generations.

“I’m from Melbourne so I’ve been there sitting on the lawn as a kid watching it, never dreaming that I would be up there one day,” she said.

“It’s my family’s Christmas tradition as well. My kids have been to ‘Carols’ since before they were born on stage with me and none of them have missed a ‘Carols

by Candlelight’.

Prepare for outrageous fun and crude laughs in this latest comedy release.

Brothers Mike (played by ‘Pitch Perfect’ star Adam Devine) and Dave (played by ‘Bad Neighbours’ star Zac Efron) are fans of the hardpartying lifestyle.

But when it comes time for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding they’re looking for the perfect ‘respectable’ dates to avoid embarrassing their family.

Unfortunately their plan backfires when they team up with Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), two uncontrollable women who end up outsmarting and out-partying the pair.

The film is very loosely based on

the Stangle brothers whose Craigslist ad looking for dates to their cousin’s wedding became a viral sensation.

The film’s creators decided to elaborate on the story to create a full length comedy feature.

While the film received mixed reviews the cast were praised by critics, in particular Aubrey Plaza who plays the wild and weird character to a tee.

‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’ is the first film release for TV comedy director Jake Szymanski.

Where do you get your protein from and is it enough?

Everyone talks about protein, but how much do you really need? This week, we bust some protein myths and misunderstandings...

Protein sure does seem to be the macronutrient of the moment.

Everywhere you look you’ll see high protein diets and products that have ‘added protein’. Anyone would think we were in the middle of a protein deficiency epidemic.

The reality is that many of us are ill informed when it comes to protein. So this week I wanted to bust some myths around this misunderstood nutrient.

We need large amounts of protein There’s many areas of nutrition where people are not getting what they need but protein is generally not one of them.

The current recommended daily protein intake for the average adult male is 64 grams and 46 grams for the average adult female (these figures will change based on age, height and weight).

So unless your food intake is greatly restricted it’s highly likely you’ll be consuming enough protein.

Protein is only found in animal products If you’re a vegetarian or vegan you’d be very familiar with the ‘but where do you

get your protein?’ question. There seems to be this ongoing myth that protein isn’t found in plants, or if it is, it’s only in very small amounts.

In reality nothing could be further from the truth. Nuts, legumes, seeds, grains, tofu and vegetables like peas and mushrooms all contain significant amounts of protein.

If you don’t consume animal products, include a variety of these foods into your diet to ensure you’re getting all the essential amino acids.

If you’re exercising you need a protein supplement For those who are doing excessive amounts of exercise a protein shake or

bar may help to meet increased protein requirements. But for most people they’re not a necessity.

Focus instead on including a range of high protein, nutrient rich foods into your diet and if you’re looking for a post workout protein hit that won’t cost a fortune, try having a simple glass of milk instead.

Protein builds muscle This one is partially true. Yes, muscle is made of protein, but consuming protein is not going to build up those muscles unless it’s coupled with muscle strengthening exercise.

So unfortunately you’re going to have to put in the hard yards to get that toned body you’re after.

Named after pioneer pastoralist and politician, John Riddoch, this 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful yet supple and restrained, with wonderfully concentrated black olive and mulberry flavours, elegant tobacco and cassis, a hint of rosemary, and chalky tannins.

With only limited production due to the grape selection criteria, this one has a $150 price tag to enjoy with a platter of hard and aged cheeses for Christmas, New Year or other celebrations, to share at the table with a rare to medium-rare rib-eye or sirloin steak, or consider as a very special Christmas gift for a VIP red wine buff.

One to note: Although the first vines were planted only in the 1980s, Sauvignon Blanc has now become Tasmania’s third most widely planted wine grape.

And a nice example of the quality that it’s risen to is the 2015 Roaring 40s Sauvignon Blanc of Riversdale Estate.

Osteoarthritis and exercise – how important is it?

exercise is the most dominant non-pharmacological intervention recommended for the treatment and management of osteoarthritis. Exercise is implemented to help improve joint range of motion, improve joint stability and muscle strength in the surrounding areas and help with weight loss.

A structured progressive strength training program that targets muscle hypertrophy will help improve function and decrease pain, particularly in loadbearing joints such as the hips and knees.

Swimming is a great way to get started on an exercise program if pain levels are too high initially. Swimming can help to increase strength in a non weight-bearing environment before moving to a landbased exercise program.

Weight is the biggest modifiable factor to decrease pain associated with osteoarthritis. Being overweight impacts how much weight the joint has to sustain with each step taken; particularly with the hips and knees. Each additional kilogram of body mass increases the compressive load placed on the knee by roughly four kilograms. Evidence-based research suggests to decrease pain, the target weight loss percentage is 7.7 per cent of total body weight.

To decrease your pain related to osteoarthritis, don’t stop exercise, seek a structured progressive land-based training program from an Exercise Physiologist.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions of an entire joint resulting from a gradual loss of cartilage.

Cartilage is the protective cushion between the bones and when this breaks down, bone overgrowth occurs and fluidfilled pockets called subchondral cysts result in inflammation and stiffness within the entire joint.

The most common joints to be affected by osteoarthritis are our hips, knees and hands, with hips and knees causing the most pain due to their weight-bearing load. Fundamentally, osteoarthritis causes chronic pain, reduces physical function, causes muscle wastage and diminishes quality of life.

Due to the pain associated with osteoarthritis, most people feel that exercise will make their pain worse and therefore opt to rest from exercise. It is important to understand why exercise helps osteoarthritis and what exercise you should do to improve your symptoms.

If you are struggling to trade in your sweat pants for a pair of denim shorts and a slinky cami, maybe a hint of colour is just what you need!

I love my pale skin and I love having gorgeous glowy tanned skin even more!

A fresh coat of tan always manages to make you feel skinnier and healthier.

The only healthy kind of tan though is a sunless one and that comes from a handy bottle.

The formulas on the market today are so high tech you can find multiple benefits that come along with your instant glow.

Try St Tropez, a foolproof classic mousse formula. An easy to apply rich golden tan, this one takes a bit of prep but the results are flawless!

Step 1: First use a body exfoliator or polish to remove any dead skin cells and create a smooth base for a longer lasting tan.

Step 2: Shave or even wax your legs for a super sleek look!

Step 3: Apply some moisturiser, especially if you usually have dry skin. Focus on areas like knees, elbows, ankles, wrists and your hairline. This will make sure these areas don’t get too dark absorbing excess product.

he Western Sydney Wanderers have suffered their first defeat since Round 1, hammered by Melbourne Victory 3-0 last Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.

The Wanderers were made to pay for missed chances and controversial decisions, as they lost their first match in five weeks.

The visitors started the match on the front foot with Jumpei, Dimas and Aritz Borda having the first three chances of the match.

Victory’s first chance of the match saw them take the lead as Andrew Redmayne made a wonderful save from Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s shot but when Besart Berisha collected the rebound he was able to tee-up Oliver Bozanic for a tap-in.

The second half began quite evenly before Melbourne’s Jai Ingham made it 2-0 in controversial circumstances in the 65th minute.

Kerem Bulut, Jumpei and Bruno Pinatares all had their chances for Western Sydney late in the game, but were unable to capitalise before Victory scored again to take an incredible 3-0 lead.

The Wanderers return to Spotless Stadium this Friday night when they battle Tim Cahill’s Melbourne City at 7.50pm.
