Local nurse: “It’s a reckless decision” Nurses fear the sick and elderly will be worse off unless the Government backflips on legislation change ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains nurses are blowing the whistle on harsh conditions in aged care homes in the hope that the Federal Government will change its mind about altering legislation.

In a senate inquiry into aged care facilities, nurses and aged care professionals have claimed that the sick and elderly are being forgotten about while the Government makes plans to allow privatelyowned aged care homes to remove registered nurses from working in homes 24 hours a day.

Jocelyn Hofman, a registered nurse who works at an aged care home in the Blue Mountains, said she is devastated by the decision that has been made.

“It’s a reckless decision,” Ms Hofman declared.

“I’m devastated, I’ve dedicated my whole working career to aged care and to taking care of these people who are sick and dying, how can society just forget about them?”

Due to changes to the Commonwealth Aged Care Act 1997 in the definition of what high and low care is, the legislation relating to registered nurses in aged care

Because of the change in the Federal legislation, State legislation will also need to be amended, which will allow individuals aged care facilities as businesses to

decide whether or not they have registered nurses in homes 24 hours a day.

According to Ms Hofman some facilities in the Blue Mountains have already removed nurses from the late night shifts

and replaced them with carers, some who have had only five weeks training online.

“Carers unfortunately aren’t able to give the elderly the quality care that a nurse can,” Ms Hofman said.

“Nurses are the ones who develop care plans and assess medical conditions and direct the team on how to adequately care for each person.

“If an elderly person’s medication needs to be adjusted it’s the nurse that does that, or if they aren’t eating properly it is the registered nurse who will change their diet.”

Although changes will be made to State legislation, Minister for Health Julian Skinner, said the issue is a Commonwealth matter even though she did raise concerns about it at a recent Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting.

“We discussed quality and safety in residential aged care and noted the work being done by the Commonwealth to develop a single quality framework for aged care,” Ms Skinner said.

The Federal Government stated that they are continuing to develop the single, quality framework for aged care.

Ms Hofman said she is looking forward to the issue being addressed at the next COAG meeting on December 9.

aving a fair degree of will power is critical when it comes to losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle, but even that isn’t the sole answer.

After all, despite being a pretty persistent and mentally strong person, the scale constantly tells me I’m doing something wrong when it comes to my health.

My guess is that it’s got something to

do with my love of fried chicken, the soft drink machine in our office and the ridiculous number of birthday cakes we seem to have here at the Western Sydney Publishing Group office.

We are an obese society and evidence suggests it’s only getting worse.

Which is why a proposed ‘supertax’ on sugary soft drinks is not such a bad idea.

The suggestion comes via a report

from Stephen Duckett, a former head of the federal Department of Health, who suggests it would add 80 cents to the price of a two litre soft drink.

While it would only be one step in tackling the obesity crisis, it would be a positive one.

One of the key reasons why people get attracted to junk food is its affordability and ease of access.

It’s worth investigating.

Sporting facilities set for upgrade Local sporting clubs are thrilled improvements to Mountains’ grounds and facilities are on the way ERIN MAMO

ar parks at local sporting facilities in the Lower Blue Mountains should finally be getting the upgrades they deserve.

At a recent Council meeting, a motion was passed on draft plans to improve parking amenities at Warimoo Oval, Knapsack Park and Lapstone Netball Courts car parks and to grant partial funding to the improvements under the 2016-2017 Asset Works Program.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said he was happy to move the resolution at the latest Council meeting, which will make the developments actually happen.

“Sporting groups and residents have been calling for these changes for years,” Cr Greenhill said.

“While increasing rates was a tough decision, it has enabled projects like this to happen.”

Ward 4 Councillor, Brendan Christie, was proud that Council passed the motion for much needed car parking upgrades.

“This is five years worth of notices of motion, lobbying, liaising with clubs and residents all coming to fruition,” he said.

Traffic congestion has been a serious

issue at each of these venues for many years, disturbing neighbouring residents and putting players and their families at risk of a serious car accident.

Cr Christie said he himself lived on Richard Road in Warrimoo for five years and experienced first hand the chaos that arrived each time a football game was on.

“Over the years I saw numerous accidents and near misses just outside of my old house,” Cr Christie said.

Blue Mountains Football Club President, David Smith, said he is looking forward to the completion of the works at Knapsack Park, where his club’s home ground is.

“Our car park is in desperate need of development to increase safety, and to increase the capacity of the car park thus reducing the need for street parking on weekends,” he said.

“We are really appreciative of Council for this upgrade plan.”

Construction for the initial stage of parking improvements at Lapstone Oval will begin shortly and is estimated to be completed by March 2017.

Council will now actively look for further funding from both the State and Federal Governments to progress both Knapsack Park and Warrimoo Oval upgrades to the design and construction stage.

Helen’s Great career comes to an end Community transport visionary enters retirement after 30 years helping local people in need JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s the end of an era for Helen Walker after serving the Blue Mountains and Penrith communities for more than 30 years through Great Community Transport.

Volunteering has been in Ms Walker’s DNA from the beginning when she got her start with Meals on Wheels.

She also volunteered her time, and was one of the first to do so, at the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre.

“I’ve been able to help a lot of people over the years and it’s been fantastic,” she told the Record.

On November 18, Ms Walker officially retired from the community transport business and was given a farewell she will never forget.

“It was a lovely ending to a 30-year commitment that I had made to the community transport program,” Ms Walker said.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, deciding to retire from Great Community Transport has been one of the most difficult things I have had to do. My decision wasn’t taken lightly.”

Ms Walker was heavily involved in

Great Community Transport and was the manager right up until she retired.

“What started as a local response to a clear transport problem in 1986 with my attempts to establish a community service, has grown into the service you see today,” Ms Walker said.

The business has now grown in leaps and bounds. Great Community Transport provides transport for eligible disadvantaged people living in the Blue Mountains and Penrith.

In 2014 and 2015, Great Community Transport provided transport to 3,291 individuals, with a total of 78,080 trips.

Over the years, Ms Walker has been recognised for her many community commitments through various awards.

She has been the recipient of an Order of Australia Medal, the Bi-Centenary Medal and the Western Sydney University Woman of the West Award.

Ms Walker said she was looking forward to retirement, acknowledging she would miss coming to work each day and providing a wonderful service to the community.

“I just want to thank everyone who travelled the community transport roads with me over the past 30 years and thank everyone for their continued support,” Ms Walker said.

Quick thinking debaters win in David and Goliath battle of words ERIN MAMO

tudents from Lithgow’s La Salle Academy have won the 2016 Debating State Championships for Catholic Schools.

On Friday, November 18, Yr 11 students Lauren Corney, Dalton Neville and Callum Woodrow travelled from Lithgow to Edmund Rice College in Wollongong to face off with schools from all over the state in a competition of words.

The day started with the trio narrowly defeating local school Mary Star of the Sea, which secured their place in the final.

The students then defeated Edmund Rice College in the State Regional Championship final, leaving them one step away from being crowned overall state winners.

In the final, the students battled representatives from Penrith’s St Dominic’s College, who had come into the competition as winners of the Sydney Metropolitan Catholic Schools round, beating 80 schools along the way.

English Teacher, Frances Leighton, said the team put in a tremendous effort.

“It was a very hot summer’s day on the day of the finals,” Ms Leighton said.

“The students were given their topic for the debate, ‘We get the politicians we deserve’, just one hour before they had to present their argument.

La Salle Academy win state debate title “They then had to prepare in a room with no air conditioning and no devices other than a dictionary.”

The team had to argue the negatives of the topic they had been given.

Ms Leighton said the school is very proud of the trio.

“We are only a small school compared to those we were up against, so the students did so well,” she said.

The three students have been debating together since Yr 7 and this is the first time they have won the prestigious championship.

Last week, Executive Director of the Bathurst Diocese, Jenny Allen, presented the team with their trophy.

Uni cameras stolen from Point Pilcher Lookout, Medlow Bath

Tourist has backpack stolen from Echo Point, Katoomba

Cameras used by the University of Melbourne to monitor waratah flowers and animal movements for a PhD project at Point Pilcher Lookout, Medlow Bath have been stolen.

The cameras were strapped to trees at the location and were marked the property of the University.

It is alleged that between 1pm on Monday, October 24, and 1.40pm on Tuesday, November 1, persons unknown have removed a number of the cameras from the location.

The cameras cannot be operated without the remote, and as a result are useless to the thieves.

Between 11.10am and 11.15am on Tuesday, November 15, a male tourist from the UK was at Echo Point, Katoomba and had placed his backpack on a bench at the viewing platform.

The back pack contained a laptop and assorted clothing items.

Whilst taking photographs at the location, persons unknown have removed the backpack and left the scene.

Thieves force entry, ransack Mt Riverview home

Commuter charged after urinating on train floor

About 4.25am on Tuesday, November 15, a 39-year-old male on a train between Lithgow and Katoomba was observed by railway security urinating on the carriage doors and on the floor.

Police met the train at Katoomba and issued the man with a Criminal Infringement Notice for offensive behaviour.

Rock thrower damages Hazelbrook house then flees

About 8.40pm on Tuesday, November 15, persons unknown have attended an Albert Road residence where it is alleged they have thrown a rock towards the front door of the house, smashing a glass panel next to the door.

It is alleged that between 5pm and 6pm on Sunday, November 20, persons unknown have forced entry to a premise on Rusden Road, Mt Riverview.

Whilst inside it is alleged that they have ransacked the premises and stolen property including a laptop and camera, before fleeing the scene.

Landcruiser found with door wide open after steal attempt

On Friday, November 18, the owner of a white Toyota Landcruiser parked their vehicle on Meredith Street, Blaxland.

It is alleged that between 10pm on the Friday and 7.45am the following day, persons unknown have forced entry to the vehicle and attempted to steal it.

They were unsuccessful as on Saturday morning the owner awoke and found the vehicle on the opposite side of Meredith Street with the driver’s door wide open.

Funding up for grabs for volunteers Volunteer groups, including those previously unsuccessful, urged to apply for 2016 grant program ERIN MAMO

ederal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, is currently urging all Blue Mountains volunteer groups, including those who may have been knocked back before, to apply for the 2016 Volunteer Grants Program.

Offered by the Department of Human Services, the Volunteer Grants Program gives community groups the opportunity to apply for up to $5,000 in funding.

Ms Templeman, who is a strong advocate for volunteer groups in the area, said the Blue Mountains has a huge range of active, hardworking volunteer groups.

“Volunteers strengthen and enrich our local community and provide a critical service to those most in need,” she said.

“I am constantly inspired by the hard work of volunteers in this region.”

Although designed to support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers and increase participation in volunteering, not all volunteer services are eligible for the grant.

The Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, based at Lawson, offers a range of services including palliative care to the terminally ill, but were denied the grant

last year without much of an explanation.

Manager, Mick Barrett, said the neighbourhood centre applied for funding to reimburse staff members who had to start travelling to and from Lithgow to assist terminally ill patients, but were told they didn’t fit the criteria.

“Because of the knock back our budget was compromised and we haven’t been able to provide our volunteers with the full reimbursements they are owed for the extra travel they have done,” he said.

According to the Department of Social Services, the grants can be used for equipment, training, fuel and transport costs and background security checks.

Mr Barrett said the centre will consider reapplying again this year.

“We were a little disheartened last year but we will always try if we have the time,” he said.

Ms Templeman encouraged community groups and volunteers to contact her office if they require further assistance or support in applying for these grants.

It seems they have finally seen the light, no doubt as a result of all the recent industry ‘kerfuffle’, and ensured that practitioners must now attain the educational levels required of other professions. As wacky and kooky as this will sound, until this bill, entry level educational requirements had not really evolved much since the start of the century. Quite simply, for anyone wishing to enter the industry you were only required to complete a foursubject qualification, a task

that could easily be done in four weeks.

Once completed, you were then considered to have achieved ‘RG 146’ status, a government-stipulated standard, and were then ready and able to join the financial planning ranks as a fully fledged adviser. There was absolutely no apprenticeship period required. In fact, the only real requirement was the ability to find a willing employer to hire you, and the big four banks were certainly accommodating .

And as you can imagine, an industry with such low entry requirements did attract candidates who may otherwise have been deemed unsuitable.

Thankfully as a result of recent media scrutiny, we have finally seen the results of allowing ‘all comers’ into such an important industry.

For a while there, our large financial institutions treated, what should have been a professional role, as merely a sales channel and applied performance metrics accordingly. Having been a bank employee, I can assure you the costs they have subsequently borne in reputational damage and financial compensation are well and truly deserved, as there were plenty of internal warnings that went unheeded.

This guy loves his treats and will happily “sit” and “shake” to get them. He has a friendly nature and enjoyed playing in the run along side other dogs. He came into the shelter together with his mate PCC 659.

This girl also knows how to “shake” and “sit” nicely for treats. She got on well with other dogs and enjoyed playing ball! She came in with her buddy PCC 658 and it would be great to see them adopted together.

This guy loved to pose for the camera! He was friendly with other dogs next to him and has a very friendly nature. He will need some TLC as he came in with glue in his coat.

Such a gorgeous looking girl with the personality to match! She was doing zoomies in her kennel and on her way past the water bowl would stick her face in and splash water everywhere! She loved cuddles and would sit really nicely for a treat.

Such a handsome little guy! He loved to splash in the clam shell pool and also play ball! He also enjoyed play with the other dogs next to him!

This is one big boy! When I first met him he was hiding, but once I came over he was out for a cuddle.

We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.

ave you noticed that many companies have great incentives and rewards for new customers? Banks offer interestfree periods and many bonus features for signing up to their credit cards.

Telecommunication companies offer discounted rates and ‘bundles’ to entice people to switch over.

But what about existing customers?

I have heard many stories of people who have discovered they are paying far more for a service than new customers, with the company choosing to ignore its existing customer base.

Is this a wise business decision?

It can be tempting as a small business to focus all your marketing efforts on obtaining new customers. And often the seemingly logical way to do this is to provide incentives and discounts to entice people. But are you rewarding your loyal customers?

Do you think a loyal customer is going to remain loyal, if they discover that they are paying more than someone who has just joined you? Loyal customers are generally people who will

recommend you to others (free advertising!) and will champion your business to others. How long will they continue to do this for you if they feel neglected or you take them or granted?

Research shows that it takes far more time, money and resources to gain a new customer than it does to retain an existing one. Surely it makes more sense, then, to focus a significant portion of your marketing efforts on your existing customers?

Loyalty programs are one such way to do this. Bakeries and coffee shops are some of the most well-known examples: frequent buyers of their products receive free items after a certain number of purchases. It creates incentive to continue to buy their products and to potentially purchase multiple items in order to reach their reward.

But you don’t need to have an official loyalty program in order to look after your current customers. Sometimes it is simply about treating long-term clients with the same enthusiasm and respect that you do a new customer. Always make them feel special and appreciated.

Your domain name should be a strong match with your trading name in order to make a positive impact on your customers and suppliers. Customers who have bought from a business that used a different domain name from its trading name, found it disorienting.

Domain name tips Keeping your domain name short makes it easy to remember for several reasons.

Long names are hard to remember, special characters like dashes, underscores and dollar signs also hinder recall. ‘.com.au’ domains are essential. Australian customers can readily see that you are an Australian business, but may go past a ‘.com’ site thinking it is American.

However, you should also book a ‘.com’ suffix if it is available in order to capture those people who forget to type the ‘au’ suffix.

Remember, your trading name is now your business name and your business name is the basis of a good domain name.

ecent changes to legislation has led to confusion about trading names and company names. Add domain names into the mix and a lot of small business owners are flummoxed.

Some business owners may remember that you previously had to register your name with NSW’s Department of Fair Trading. But that changed in 2011 with the introduction of the Business Names Registration Act. The Act requires people carrying on a business under a trading name to register that name with ASIC. The Act effectively removed trading name from the definitions previously used; any business that uses a particular name now has to have that name registered with ASIC. Furthermore, registering the name does not guarantee exclusive use to the name. In this situation it might be best to trademark your business name.

The final stumbling block for some business owners is the difference between a domain name and a business name. The domain name is the business name’s address on the internet. A domain on the internet is a space reserved to the

Last Wednesday the store, who sells outdoor recreational gear, officially opened their new, much larger store at 86 Katoomba Street.

Owner, Robert Inshaw, who bought the business early last year said he wanted a new space that he could make his own. “I’m a big fan of the outdoors and trail running,� he said. “So when the opportunity came up to buy the business – I jumped at it.�

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

othing brings people together quite like music.

For the touring music troupe, The Young Americans, the ability of music to transcend cultural boundaries has been the basis of their success.

The California-based non-profit global music outreach organisation was founded in 1962 and is the oldest and largest of its kind in the world.

Mariah Strickland, Johnathan Velez and Shelby Wallace are part of the group, which will be offering music education to

the kids of the Blue Mountains in January through their summer camp program.

“Our main goal is to inspire the world through music with our college program, our youth programs and our concerts,” Mariah said.

The 30-member, college-aged cast will present a five day educational program, which includes classes on dancing, singing and theatre performance.

The camp culminates in a two-hour show where students get the chance to perform alongside The Young Americans for their teachers, families, friends and the community.

While music and performing is the focus of the camps, the benefits for students

reach far beyond music education.

“We always encourage kids that you don’t have to sing or dance to take this workshop because it’s about so much more,” Shelby said.

“It’s like life skills almost, and just to see the impact that you can have on these kids is definitely the most rewarding part.

“We just want them to grow as people,” Mariah added.

“Yes there’s the singing, acting and dancing but it’s really just about them as people being more confident.”

Along with the satisfaction that comes with seeing students flourish, The Young Americans cast also gets to travel the world doing what they love.

“I’ve been to Japan, all over Europe, the United States and now Australia,” Shelby said.

“You get immersed in the culture right away.”

With travel also comes new experiences and plenty of new people to meet.

“When we travel we stay in different people’s houses and it’s the best experience,” Johnathan said.

The Young Americans will be running their five day camp at St Paul’s Grammar School in Cranebrook from Monday, January 16 to Friday, January 20 as part of their world tour. Registration is $450.

Do-it-yourself burgers are the perfect answer for a fun meal Australia has a true love affair with burgers, but traditions are out the window and new burger ideas are all the rage as we head into summer...

Along with pizza and hot chips, burgers have to be one of our most loved takeaway foods.

So this week I thought I’d run through some tips for those looking to recreate that perfect ‘burger joint’ burger at home.

Play around with fillings While the old lettuce, tomato, onion and beetroot combo has its place, these days there’s really no ingredient that doesn’t work on a burger.

Try swapping tomato sauce for a spicy tomato relish, cheese slices for haloumi or salad for a delicious slaw, which works particularly well with fried chicken.

Try a different bun Gone are the days when the humble soft white burger bun was the only option to house those delicious burger fillings.

To mix things up, try swapping to a brioche roll, a rich buttery bun that will add a bit of sweetness to your burger.

If you want something a little more nutritious, wholegrain seeded rolls are

the way to go. Or for those who are gluten intolerant, or just don’t like bread, try mixing things up with field mushrooms or lettuce buns.

Sliders are the perfect option if you can never decide what you want to eat. These bite-sized burgers are perfect for testing out a few different flavour combos.

Experiment with proteins Beef and chicken are classic favourites but sometimes you crave something different.

If you’re a meat eater, try kangaroo or fish for a leaner protein option. If you’re vegetarian, or just looking to reduce your meat intake, try a black bean patty for a Mexican flavour with a meaty texture, or fried tofu for an Asian inspired burger.

...or go big If you’ve been on social media lately you’ll have seen those disgustingly amazing looking burgers that are piled high with beef patties and smothered in sauce.

If you want to recreate the towering trend, without putting yourself at risk of a heart attack, try more nutritious fillings like salads, avocado, relish, caramelised onion, pickles, egg or pineapple, or recreate the Big Mac style with an extra bun.

Insulin is a hormone that is released into the blood stream by the pancreas to collect sugars and take them to the cells for fuel. When we consume certain foods, particularly carbohydrates and sugars, they are broken down into glucose and released into the blood stream – this is referred to as blood glucose.

Type 2 Diabetes is a lifestyle-related chronic condition where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body becomes resistant to insulin levels and therefore ineffective at managing blood glucose levels.

Over a long period of time of trying to lower your blood glucose levels your pancreas wears out the cells that produce insulin. By the time you are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes you have on average lost between 50-70 per cent of the cells that produce insulin.

Taking control of your glucose levels is important to reduce your risk of the complications related to Type 2 Diabetes.

There are many ways you can take control of your diabetes.

Here are five tips to help manage blood glucose control:

1. Exercise. Maintaining a regular exercise program increases tissue sensitivity to insulin so your cells are able to use the insulin to uptake the glucose stored in your body.

2. Check your blood glucose levels daily. This is important to keep track of whether your medication is working and to reduce your risk of severe complications related to consistently high blood glucose levels.

3. Eat low GI carbohydrates. The glycaemic index (GI) measures the

effect carbohydrates have on your blood glucose levels. Low GI foods are absorbed slowly by the body resulting in a steady rise of blood glucose.

4. Eat small portions of good carbohydrates. Aim for 15-30 grams of low GI and high fibre carbs per meal.

5. Blood glucose level targets. When testing our blood glucose levels before a meal our range should be between 6.0-8.0mmol/L. When testing two hours after a meal our range should be between 6.0-10.0mmol/L.

The latest trend carries the worn-in denim detailing to another level, making sure that our ankles have a lot of extra love as well.

This trend works best with skinny jeans or a straight cut. Look out for a chewed hemline or a unique step hem where the hem of your jeans are cut slightly higher in the front!

ocal pony club riders have been commended for their horsemanship after carving up at the field at the State Championships.

Five riders from Sun Valley Pony Club were recently presented with a State Representative Award by Blue Mountains MP, Trish Doyle, in recognition of their outstanding achievements this year in horse riding.

Ms Doyle said the small riding club has a very big heart and some mighty talented riders.

“I congratulate the team from the Sun Valley Pony Club for their achievements in the State Championships,” Ms Doyle said.

“The riders competed against much bigger clubs from all across NSW and this achievement is really quite extraordinary!”

With a club consisting of only nine riders, five members, including Rebecca Moss, Georgia Foley, Isabella Witchard, Clare Jessup and Evie Norris, came away with a win or placed at the Championships this year, making them eligible for the State Award.

The NSW Government State Representative Award recognises people who have represented the state in a competitive field.

Ms Doyle also gave a special shout out to the

Britt Moss and Trish Doyle with State Representative Award recipients dedicated volunteers, including parents, who ensure that the club continues to run.

Secretary and Senior Instructor of the Pony Club, Britt Moss, said she is very proud of the club and each of the recipients.

“Each of the riders displayed a fantastic ef-

fort in their events earlier this year,” Ms Moss said.

“A lot of hard work goes into preparing for these championships and everyone in the club is so proud of the riders and they should be proud of themselves.”
