C

anberra coach Ricky Stuart has probably let a few expletives flow from his mouth in recent weeks but nothing could be worse than the C word.

And by C word, I mean CRISIS. While coach Stuart watches the Parramatta side he took to a wooden spoon last season emerge from the depths of the NRL basement, his pain is further compounded by the amateur performances displayed by his Canberra Raiders over the past two matches.

They’ve had 108 points put on them in the space of two matches thanks to a 54-18 thrashing at the hands of Manly and a 54-12 loss to the Warriors last week.

They looked disjointed, disinterested and totally outclassed in both games.

It’s safe to say that the Raiders will turn things around at some point. In fact, it was only a month ago they produced a solid performance to down Melbourne 24-22 at Canberra Stadium.

And it is that performance against the Storm that Ivan Cleary should be focusing on this week – not the losses to Manly and the Warriors.

The closeness of the NRL competition means that it’s easy for teams to bounce back, and given Canberra’s problems primarily look to be in their preparation, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see the broken down Green Machine back in some sort of normal operation as quickly as Sunday.

Stuart is probably one more big loss away from making wholesale changes to his team, and to that end he has spared captain Terry Campese the axe this weekend. Campese is struggling big time but it’s understood he had a heart to heart with

Stuart during the week, which may spark him into action against the Panthers.

Penrith have already played Canberra once this season and fought out a 12-6 victory at Sportingbet Stadium, but horrible conditions on the night mean there’s no real form line to take from the game.

The Panthers were impressive in demolishing Newcastle 32-10 last Sunday, with Jamie Soward, Matt Moylan and Josh Mansour having particularly good games.

The task this weekend is to win two games in a row – something the side hasn’t done all season. In fact, the win/loss/win/loss pattern is now a major talking point in the game and the sooner the Panthers manage to break the pattern, the better.

Penrith do have some injury concerns to worry about and there’s a chance that the team named by Ivan Cleary on Tuesday may change before Sunday’s kick-off.

James Segeyaro has again been named to start at hooker, with Kevin Kingston’s ankle injury clearly worse than first thought. Many fans won’t be complaining and Segeyaro certainly won’t be as he has made it very clear he wants to become an 80 minute player sooner rather than later.

Nigel Plum hasn’t been named after

being knocked out last week but has been replaced by Tim Grant who returns from injury, so really the Panthers have lost nothing up front compared to the team they fielded against Newcastle.

Adam Docker has been named at lock but was injured last weekend and surely is in some doubt heading into this one.

If he’s out, it could force a re-shuffle that would see Tyrone Peachey play at lock and Ben Murdoch-Masila potentially make his Panthers NRL debut.

Injuries to key men are starting to test the Panthers but at this stage, coach Cleary has been able to cover it.

Isaac John being ruled out for the season robs Cleary of his back-up plan in the halves, but poses no week-to-week problem unless something goes wrong with Jamie Soward or Peter Wallace. In short, Penrith are coping with their problems.

Penrith have enough quality across the park to put a big score on Canberra.

Playing their own game and not worrying about whether Canberra do or don’t turn up will be the big key to ensuring the team bus ride back to Sydney’s west is an enjoyable one.

Tip: Panthers by 14.

Moylan silences the critics A t the start of the year, many people were questioning whether Matt Moylan would be Penrith’s best long-term fullback option. In the last few weeks alone, Moylan has answered those questions in emphatic style.

After a scintillating start to the season including a City Origin representative berth where he picked up ‘Player’s Player’ a fortnight ago, all the questioning regarding Moylan’s ability has been put to bed.

With plenty of fullbacks like Kevin Naiqama, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Kieran Moss all chasing Moylan’s number 1 jersey, the 22-year-old local junior hasn’t

flinched once and has become an increasingly more confident player in the process.

“I was pretty confident going into the season,” Moylan told Extra Time.

“I knew there was competition but I think that’s healthy for any club to have competition for spots.

“I feel more confident now after a few games last year. I’m just trying to build on that and try and play more consistent footy.”

That newfound confidence led Moylan to his first major representative selection when he was chosen for City Origin late last month.

Moylan said it was a thoroughly enjoy-

able experience getting to play and learn from players he’d idolised after watching games on television.

“It was good getting to know a few other players and play alongside a few different people you don’t normally get to play with,” he said.

“Every training session we had everyone was performing good and you’ve got to put your best foot forward in every session.

You can’t just have a ‘cruisey’ day.”

With teammates like prop Jeremy Latimore chanting “Origin candidate” to Moylan during this interview, the 2013 Penrith Rookie of the Year admitted his recent stint playing footy at a high level

has given him the urge to play more.

“I think that’s everyone’s goal when playing NRL footy to one day play rep footy,” he said.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to play more, that’s for sure.”

But Moylan will have to continue working on his game if he’s ever to be considered for a sky blue number 1 jersey in the future.

“There’s still a few things I need to work on like getting bigger and stronger and also working on my defence,” Moylan said.

“David Farleigh, our defensive coach, has been doing a bit of work with me lately.”

There’s no better round during the NRL season than the annual Women in League round which takes place this weekend. While I could talk about how much of a real privilege it is being a female covering the game and the first full time female panellist on ‘The Footy Show’, this round isn’t just about us women in the media reporting on the game.

It’s true, the landscape has changed over the past few years and there are a lot more women covering rugby league but we are certainly not the ones that should be applauded during this round.

It’s the mums, the wives, the female volunteers who without, this game wouldn’t function.

Most women involved in rugby league are involved in a voluntary capacity. In the rural parts of the country, a lot of women whose kids play rugby league at some point in their lives end up sticking around in the game their entire lives, long after their kids have stopped playing or move out of town.

These women continue to volunteer in the tuck shop on the weekend because they love the game and want it to stay alive.

They are the women that should be applauded, they never get recognition but that’s what this round should be about, not about the people who have a great job working in television getting paid to be involved. Fans should not look at this round as a token round where we all wear pink and acknowledge women but we should really think about what this round is about and that’s the thousands of women around Australia who make the game what it is today.

A quick little story before I go and last week I had a 92-yearold woman come up to me in Chatswood, who was an AFL fan mind you, that loves watching ‘The Footy Show’, she thinks it’s hilarious. If we are attracting people who aren’t even league fans, who are 92-year-old women, to watch the show and take an interest in rugby league then we are certainly doing the right thing.

He has made a name for himself as an impact player off the bench, but James Segeyaro makes no secret of the fact that he wants to play the full 80 minutes

here’s no question about it, James Segeyaro wants to be Penrith’s full-time hooker… the sooner, the better.

Last Sunday the 23-year-old PNG international started his first game of the season at dummy half in place of injured co-captain, and the man that’s held the job for the past five seasons, Kevin Kingston.

Segeyaro enjoyed his best game of the year playing the full 80 minutes. He scored his first try of the season and his combinations with Penrith’s other key men played out seamlessly.

Speaking exclusively with Extra Time on Tuesday morning, Segeyaro fell just short of demanding the full-time hooker role go to him permanently.

“I actually rather starting than coming off the bench because you get used to the game straight away and I can get my rhythm going a bit earlier. When I come off the bench I suppose I try a bit too hard sometimes,” he said.

Segeyaro revealed conversations have occurred between himself and coach Ivan Cleary about the possibility of having him start over the more experienced Kingston as the season rolls on.

“Before I came to Penrith I sat down with Gus and Ivan and it’s in the plans for the

James Segeyaro. Photo: Melinda Jane future because that’s what I came here for, to have the starting jersey and be a consistent NRL hooker,” he said.

“I look at blokes like Michael Ennis, Cameron Smith and Jake Friend and I just want to be like them.

“Ivan and I have a chat every now and then and it’s what he feels is best for the team at the moment. Whatever he has

planed I’m happy to go with but, at the end of the day, I want to be here for as long as I can and stay out on the field for as long as possible.”

With the ball now firmly in Cleary’s court, a couple of huge decisions must be made in order to not only keep Segeyaro happy but to maintain a strong line-up capable of making the finals.

The Panthers enjoy a rich history of cooperation with the Indigenous community. In keeping with this wonderful tradition the club has announced an outstanding initiative to commemorate the 2014 Close the Gap Round. Fans are invited to enter a design competition for an exclusive Panthers Indigenous jersey to honour this celebration in Round 23. All entries are welcome, no restriction or limit to the number of entries however entries will be shortlisted and the final selection will be made by a panel of Panthers Indigenous players. The proposed pre-season calendar for 2015 will start with the Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines. And, as promised by the league, the Indigenous All Stars game returns on February 14. Mrs Masked Panther will be thrilled with this Valentine’s Day scheduling. The All Stars game will be followed by the World Club Challenge (in the UK) and NRL trials on February 20, 21 and 22. The Telstra Premiership will begin on March 5.

The Penrith Panthers wore black arm bands in their match against Newcastle last week following the loss of club legend Ross Gigg (pictured) last week. The 58-year-old played his junior football with Blacktown Leagues before signing with Penrith in 1974. He was the 111th player to make his first grade debut with Penrith against Newtown, and had a very successful career spanning 10 years. Most of his rugby league career was spent with Penrith, except for the two seasons he spent with Group 10 club Lithgow Shamrocks in 1980-81. After retiring in 1984, Ross served the club as Assistant Secretary, before taking on a role as General Manager of Western Australian Rugby League in the 1990’s.

Panthers Executive General Manager Rugby League Phil Gould played with Ross for a number of years, and is deeply saddened by his passing. “I personally had the pleasure of playing with Ross back in the 70s and early 80s at Panthers.

Knights in the NSW Cup 38-16. With two of their strike weapons forced to end their night early through injury, Penrith’s night looked done for all money when the Knights took a 16-4 lead mid-way through the second half.

However, their great second half attitude in recent weeks saw them storm home with players including Ben MurdochMasila, Vaipuna Tia Kilifi and Sam Anderson all bagging rare four-pointers.

Unfortunately, the news came through on Monday that Isaac John will miss the rest of the season.

Meanwhile in the Holden Cup, the Panthers put up a great fight in the first half against the competition-leading Newcastle Knights but unlike their older brothers, failed to show the same desire in the second half going down 40-22.

Penrith surprisingly led at the half 18-14 but it was all Newcastle in the second who ran in four tries to one. A late brawl in the match, which spilled over into the grandstand, saw Sam Scarlett from Penrith and Bryce Donovan from Newcastle binned for the remainder of the game.

Tough end to season The Junior Representative season has come to a close with the Penrith boys making it to the grand final in both age groups.

Although we didn’t come away with the premierships, it was a great effort by both squads and all the boys should be proud of their achievements.

Congratulations to the players and staff that have been part of this program since late last season. These boys will now take the knowledge gained from this experience back to their junior league club and share these newfound gains with their team mates.

From our Harold Matthews squad: Jake Gillett-Gow, Jesse Abbott, Samson Kerr, Samuel Radovu, Jonah Metuangaro along with Henry Nafoi from our WSAS squad were selected in the NSWRL U16 Possible vs Probable trial which was held last Tuesday night. We would also like to acknowledge and congratulate our Rep trainer Nathan Mairleitner on his selection as a trainer in the NSWRL U16 squad. Well done to all.

We look forward to seeing all the boys back together at the Rep Presentation Night in a couple of weeks time.

Moving into round four of the junior league season this week and so far ‘mother nature’ has been smiling on us. We hope this continues well into the season so we get to see great junior league football throughout the district.

The junior league staff and board would like to say thanks for all the messages and support received from the rugby league family after the recent passing of our beloved board member, Jan Cameron.

From the vault this week comes a 2004 season ticket.

Long before membership was the buzz word in rugby league, dedicated fans who turned up each week would usually buy a season ticket.

This one is particularly special as it features Craig Gower holding up the 2003 trophy. It was certainly a season ticket full of expectation after the Panthers had won the grand final in 2003.

ou could call it the last season before rugby league lost its innocence.

The year before Super League became a major talking point, the year before the introductions of teams like the Warriors and Cowboys.

1994 still saw the use of a top five system, and rugby league remained very Sydney centric despite the success of the Broncos.

For the Panthers, the club was still recovering from the death of Ben Alexander two years earlier and was struggling for consistency on the field.

The season started off well enough – an 18-all draw against the Gold Coast Seagulls at Penrith Stadium, with the big names scoring all the points – Ryan Girdler scored two tries while Brad Fittler and Gary Freeman also crossed.

When you look at that star-studded team in round 1, 1994 you have to wonder how Penrith didn’t make the finals. A backline that featured players like Greg Alexander, Graham Mackay, Brad Fittler and Ryan Girdler; a halves combination of Steve Carter and Gary Freeman; and some real grunt up front with the likes of John Cartwright and Trevor Gillmeister.

Penrith were undefeated after three rounds with wins over the Dragons and Eastern Suburbs helping the side to a prominent position on top of the ladder.

But with rumours persisting about coach Phil Gould’s future, the side started to be inconsistent.

They lost to North Sydney in round four and were thrashed 37-6 by Brisbane the following week. A Matt Sing double would help the side to a 24-0 win over the Tigers the following week, but all it did was sum up how the Panthers were travelling in terms of their inconsistency.

The Panthers sat in the top five at the half way point of the season but losses to Souths, Newcastle and Cronulla (the latter a 32-0 shellacking) saw the side slip out of finals contention. Round 16 would be Phil Gould’s final game in charge – a win over the Gold Coast – with Royce Simmons taking over after that.

The Panthers finished the season in eighth spot with 10 wins, 10 losses and two draws.

Undoubtedly the best win of the season was

against arch rivals Parramatta in round 7. Graham Mackay bagged three tries and kicked five goals to help Penrith a 34-10 victory.

Any year in which there’s a mid-season coaching change is tough – and there’s no doubt that this was the case in 1994 for the Panthers.
