he Penrith Panthers take on arch rivals Parramatta tonight in the second ‘Battle of the West’ for 2014, and both sides have plenty to prove to not only themselves and their supporters, but to the wider rugby league world who haven’t quite woken up to the fact that both of these sides could well be the real deal in 2014.

For the Eels, that doubt comes on the back of consecutive wooden spoons and the controversy over coach Ricky Stuart’s defection to Canberra.

For Penrith, the fear is that the side – despite being 3rd on the ladder – fails to ‘show up’ when it matters. Or to put it more simply, they fail to fire in big games.

With tonight’s game broadcast live to the masses on Channel 9 and against a side now running fourth on the ladder, the Panthers again have a chance to fire in a big game and prove any knockers wrong.

Victory here would really solidify Penrith’s top eight credentials and start to put to bed some of the doubters who still believe Ivan Cleary’s men don’t have what it takes.

The good news for Cleary is that the rest of the rugby league planet has been dominated by State of Origin, leaving this big game to go under the radar – an unfortunate by-product of the Origin period but a blessing for the Panthers.

Penrith didn’t have one player in either of the Origin sides, which has allowed Cleary to have a disruption-free preparation for this game.

There is little doubt that he would have spent much of the past fortnight getting his players mentally right for this game, particularly after such a long stint on the road.

In fact, since Penrith were last at home (against the Titans way back on April 21) so much has happened.

There was that controversial loss to the Sharks, the big win over Newcastle and most recently the important victory over Canberra.

In the process the Panthers managed to get the win/loss/win/loss routine out of their system and from here, can focus purely on the game in front of them.

The real danger from the opposition tonight comes in the shape of two players – Jarryd Hayne and Chris Sandow. Hayne is obviously in some doubt after playing for the Blues just 48 hours ago, but a bye last weekend will ensure that the redeemed Sandow is chomping at the bit for this big game against the Panthers.

After being recalled to first grade against the Panthers back in round four, Sandow has been a revelation for the Eels and is a big part of the reason they sit in the top four. The little number seven is finally showing signs of why the Eels bought him for such an extravagant price in the first place, and his energy and enthusiasm will be difficult for the Panthers to contain.

Difficult, but not impossible.

As for Hayne, he’ll obviously be a little tired and sore following Origin I but that’s unlikely to stop the pieces of magic he’s often able to produce.

Penrith and Parramatta play very different brands of football. The Panthers are a little more predictable and perhaps a little safer, while the Eels can be wild and produce something from nothing multiple times during a game.

The latter makes for some exciting football and is harder to manage for the opposition, but often calm heads prevail in matches like this and that’s where the games of Peter Wallace and Jamie Soward really come to the fore.

If they can control the game from the outset, they have a real chance to frustrate the Eels. The more frustrated they get, the more risky their play becomes.

The return to the Penrith team of Elijah Taylor is significant. His defence has been a highlight of the Panthers’ resurgence this season and will be a welcome addition against a big Eels back. Same story for Lewis Brown who also returns.

Tonight, the Panthers arrive on the big stage to prove they’re the real deal.

enrith Panthers NSW Cup stars George Jennings and Daniel Foster were carted off to jail last week, not because they had a run-in with the law but for a good cause.

The pair got stuck into some delicious caramel slice and posed for photos with staff at the John Morony Correctional Complex in Berkshire Park, just outside of Penrith, as part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Jennings, who’s currently sidelined with a season-ending elbow injury, said he wasn’t too nervous about getting the callup to visit the correctional facility.

“I wasn’t really nervous because we’d visited some prisons in the past for other initiatives like NAIDOC week, so I was pretty excited to come out and meet all the people,” he told Extra Time.

Fortunately the 2013 Holden Cup premiership winners didn’t have to mix with criminals, instead they were allowed to mingle with staff of the prison who made them aware that many inmates were actually Panthers fans.

“We’ve heard stories like that before,” Jennings said.

“Some of our friends are in prison and they told us they’ve watched a couple of our games on TV.”

The event raised almost $5,000 for the Cancer Council.

“We’re a really tight bunch. The boys coming through like myself, George and Bryce [Cartwright], we’d hang out even if it wasn’t for footy but it just comes together on the field,” Foster said.

Interesting times The representative season concluded early this month and the players and staff were recognised on Tuesday night at their Presentation Night for what was a great season, with both teams reaching the Grand Finals. Big thanks to NRL players Bryce Cartwright, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Isaah Yeo for attending to give their insight and assist with the presentations. Also to Tim Gilbert, who through the Junior League Sponsor Channel 9 ran the night smoothly as the Master of Ceremonies.

We move into Round 6 in the Junior League this weekend with the following weekend being a BYE in the district for the long weekend.

Our A Grade Division 1 competition is fiercely competitive with only a point between first placed Brothers and second placed St Marys. Last weekend saw the top of the table clash, with Brothers coming away with the win. These teams are being closely followed by Emu Plains and St Patricks. Looking at our Under 15 Division 1 competition there are four teams within three points of each other: St Marys, Windsor, Brothers and Blacktown Workers.

On another note our inaugural competition for the girls is a very competitive one with the two top teams close to the half-way point being St Clair and Lower Mountains. Well done to all the clubs who have the girls teams, I am told they have brought a new dimension to the game and some great crowds as well.

Regrading – the word of the day in Junior League at this time of the season will be looked at over the next week with any required changes taking affect after Round 7. A reminder, there are 6, 8 and 10 team competitions in our junior league so not every team will be able to win!

T

he 1991 Grand Final is a game no Penrith Panthers fan will ever forget – the club’s first premiership, the fairytale farewell for Royce Simmons and a win that sparked celebrations throughout the city.

But it’s incredible to think just how close Penrith were to not qualifying for that magical September day back in 1991.

Two weeks earlier, in the Grand Final qualifying match, the Panthers faced North Sydney at the SFS and even though they were clear favourites, the side only just managed to scrape home and make it through to the big one.

In fact, had Darryl Halligan not had an awkward day with the boot, the Penrith squad may have been on holidays on September 22 rather than lifting the Winfield Cup. The Bears scored three tries to the Panthers’ two, but it was Greg Alexander’s boot that made the difference – he kicked four goals. Halligan kicked just one from five attempts. Incredibly, three – yes, three – of those attempts were from in front of the posts.

Had Halligan been his usual self with the boot that day, the Panthers would have never won the 1991 premiership.

Penrith walked onto the SFS on September 22, 1991 a much more mature looking side than the one that had been on the same turf a year earlier and lost.

So many things went against Penrith in the big one – Mark Geyer was sent to the sin bin, the Raiders scored a try off a controversial refereeing decision and Mal Meninga was having a stellar game.

At half-time, with his side down 12-6, Penrith coach Phil Gould delivered a blast to his players.

Rumour has it the speech finished with the words: “Are you going to be losers?”

The second half was terrific from Penrith, but with 10 minutes to go, the scores were locked at 12-all and it was anyone’s game.

Then, the man they call Brandy stepped in.

Greg Alexander potted a 38 metre field goal that would give Penrith a 13-12 lead and the advantage heading into the final stages of the game.

Alexander confirmed victory with a sideline conversion that gave the Panthers an unassailable 19-12 lead.

It was a magical day in the history of the Penrith Panthers, one that would define the club’s future.

It didn’t quite spark the dynasty many had hoped, but nobody will ever forget that incredible day in September and the memories it created that will last forever in the minds and hearts of Penrith fans.

The Penrith Panthers NSW Cup side have continued their strong form with a huge 42-8 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles last Saturday at Brookvale Oval.

In what can be described as a scrappy and fiery affair, the game failed to reach any heights with the Panthers superb in attack but very poor discipline-wise.

In his comeback game after a year on the sidelines though injury, half Tom Humble was one of the standout performers in the match alongside Sam Anderson and Ben Murdoch-Masila, who were both enormous in defence.

But it was Penrith’s backline who was the real difference in this one with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Kevin Naiqama, Eto Nabuli and Kieran Moss all crossing the line.

With the emphatic win, the Panthers move into second place on the NSW Cup standings and will take on the Illawarra Cutters this Sunday afternoon at Collegians Sports Complex on the NSW south coast.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Holden Cup team will look nice and refreshed after a muchneeded week off when they take on the high flying Parramatta Eels this afternoon at Sportingbet Stadium. The Eels are currently sitting in second place with only two losses to their name.

anthers boss Phil Gould believes tonight’s Friday Night Football clash between two of western Sydney’s powerhouse clubs, Penrith and Parramatta, will be the biggest game of the year thus far for both teams.

Speaking with Extra Time ahead of tonight’s top four blockbuster, Gould said both sides deserved their position on the ladder and that tonight’s game was a “massive” occasion for rugby league in western Sydney.

“It’s great to see both sides going well.

Parramatta has had their troubles, the Panthers have been in a rebuilding phase but tonight is three versus four and it’s a big night for both clubs,” he said.

“It’s only early in the season, there’s still a long way to go but both clubs are in good positions at the moment. In saying that, we’re only a couple of points from being out of the eight because the competition is very congested.

“The winner of this game will take a huge leap forward, so it’s a big game for both clubs.”

“I think the coach and players have done a good job. We’ve had some injury concerns, we haven’t had the same side on the field in consecutive weeks yet, but we have good depth this year and players who have come in have done the job,” he said.

“I think where we are positioned is pretty fair and it’s a big few weeks coming up during the Origin period that we can hold our head up high and be there for the run to the finals in July and August.”

With the Panthers performing spectacularly well on the field, Gould revealed there were some exciting announcements to be made off the field in terms of the club’s recruitment for next season.

“We have a couple of nice announcements coming up, some signings and re-signings. Our roster is nearly done for next year, we’ve already begun working on the 2016 roster,” he said.

“I think the most exciting thing is we’ve got some youngsters ready to debut in first grade between now and the end of the year. Over the next few years fans are going to see some youngsters come through the top grade that they’re going to love. That’s the exciting part for us.”

Biggest Battle of the West yet

Footy on fire in western Sydney

The western Sydney derby is one that has many supporters including myself anticipating a great Friday night of footy. No one would have been expecting this to be the clash of teams three and four on the ladder especially given Parramatta’s previous two years as wooden spooners and the inconsistency of the Panthers.

No matter what is happening in terms of the teams’ fortunes these games are always intense so the added weight is the perfect opportunity for the true team leaders in both sides to step up to the plate.

The Panthers should be expecting to play in front of what should be the biggest home crowd of the season and there is certainly no reason why the club should not expect upwards of 18,000 people.

It’ll certainly be a magical night at Sportingbet Stadium and a big occasion for everyone.

As I anticipated but didn’t expect it to happen so soon, Steve Price has bitten the dust over at the Dragons. Steve is a great bloke and underwent a great learning experience under Wayne Bennett but he was always on a hiding to nothing to replicate the success of 2010 especially when Bennett’s recruitment was always based mainly on his short term timeframe not a long term plan.

Monday night saw the 19th player and another hooker join the 300 Club with John Morris of the Sharks reaching this game milestone. Unlike my 300th game which was a victory against the Gold Coast the Sharks could not muster a performance to make it a winning occasion for him but regardless when you consider the average NRL career is around 45 games he should be congratulated.

Finally my former skipper Craig Gower and his family have been dealt some terrible news with his father Mal facing a huge battle health wise.

I am sure I speak on behalf of all Gowie’s former team mates and friends in passing on all our prayers and best wishes to the family.

Who would have thought at the start of the season that tonight’s Battle of the West between the Panthers and Eels would see two of the NRL’s top four teams going head-tohead.

There are so many things to get excited about in this one at Sportingbet Stadium with plenty at stake as well given it’s one of the best local derbies in today’s game.

Firstly, people always say when rugby league is doing well out west, the game is in a really good place, and that’s certainly very true on this occasion.

The league can promote junior development and pump millions into grassroots footy all they like but unless teams like Penrith and Parramatta are doing well on the table, it’s hard to keep some fans interested, so I think it’s fantastic both clubs are flying high.

I’ll start with the Eels, and even though they’ve taken home two wooden spoons in the past two years I’ve always believed they didn’t need to recruit too many new players because when their good players like Jarryd Hayne and Chris Sandow are playing well they can carry anyone else in that team.

For the Panthers, they’ve got some players out to prove something as well.

Jamal Idris and Tim Grant I’m sure would have loved to have been a part of Origin I the other night and will want to put forward their claims ahead of Game II in Sydney in a few weeks time.

Jamie Soward is another player to watch tonight. If he has an absolute cracker, which we all know he is capable of, I think it could set up some cracking tries for the home side.

And lastly who can forget last year’s Battle of the West at Penrith when then debutant Matt Moylan went on a rampage against the Eels and totally outplayed the more experienced Hayne Plane. Moylan got the better of him on that occasion so I’m confident Hayne won’t want to be shown up by the young gun again.
