Nathan Taylor chats with 2011 X Factor winner Reece Mastin about becoming an instant star, being the busiest teenager in Australia and his recently released debut album…
THE 17-YEAR-OLD WITH TALENT TO BURN
T
his is the face of a kid who’s going to have one very happy Christmas. At just 17-years-old, 2011 ‘X Factor’ winner Reece Mastin is currently the Australian music industry’s hottest property and also probably the busiest. In just a little over three weeks, the Adelaide teenager won Australia’s highest rating singing contest, signed a contract with Sony Music, released a number one single, filmed his first music clip, strolled the red carpet at the ARIAs, recorded his debut album and celebrated his 17th birthday. “It’s been a full-on three weeks and I haven’t really had a breather yet,” Reece told FYI. “But in saying that it’s been so fun and I can’t remember a time when I haven’t had a smile on my face.” Reece said the release of his debut album, which features 11 studio versions of his best tracks performed on the show, has been a long time in the making. “I’ve been waiting a long time to put this album out, since basically the start of the show, so it’s great it’s finally out there for people to buy,” he said. Just like after any television singing contest it’s important for the winner to release an album as soon as possible in order to capitalise on the popularity the show has given them. Reece’s album took just three days to record in what he describes as an extremely gruelling process. “We had to get the album done in three days in order for it to come out early before my upcoming tour started,” Reece said. “Most of the songs I sung on the show were high-energy rock songs, which meant I had to belt out every

song. I was definitely straining and putting a lot of pressure on my voice but I pulled through and the songs I recorded sound great.” One of the tracks on the album is Reece’s debut single ‘Good Night’, which rocketed to number one on the Aussie charts just hours after he was crowned winner. ‘Good Night’ was so popular fans were purchasing the song every 2.7 seconds, turning the hot pop/ rock track into a Gold record (35 000 units sold) in just two days of release. What was even more amazing was his ‘X Factor’ mentor Guy Sebastian had the number two song on the charts at the same time with ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’. Reece said he wouldn’t have gotten so far in the contest if it wasn’t for his mentor, Guy. “Guy (Sebastian) is amazing and I owe most of my time on the show to him,” he said. “He helped me with a lot of things and made me a better musician tenfold.” Reece had plenty of highlights throughout his ‘X Factor’ journey including weekly standing ovations, utter praise from judges Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and former Spice Girl Mel B and even had the opportunity to perform a duet on finale night with none other than Australia’s highest selling artist Kylie Minogue. “Kylie (Minogue) was amazing and it was an honour to get to sing with her,” Reece said. “I was very nervous when we first met but she made it very comfortable because she was such a nice person.” Born in the UK, Reece and his family relocated to South Australia nearly seven years ago with the aim of seeking better opportunities and living a more comfortable lifestyle. Whilst he

admits he wasn’t the best student in the classroom, Reece did indeed have an interest in music which was ignited even further by his school music teacher Mr Elsey. “Mr Elsey is a great man and he just taught me so much about music,” Reece said. “Mr Elsey didn’t just teach me about the theory behind music but some of the great things that have come from it as well. He really sparked up a bigger passion in music than I’d ever had before.” Unfortunately for Reece and his beloved teacher they’ll be without each other next year as Reece plans to finish the final year of his education on the road. Reece said the decision to leave school and study out of a tour van wasn’t a hard one to make. “It wasn’t really that hard because if I had gone back to school it wouldn’t have been very easy to learn because I would’ve been hounded all the time,” he said. Reece won’t only be leaving behind his teacher but also his friends, and if it wasn’t for them convincing him to attend ‘The X Factor’ auditions to get the day off school, he may not be where he is today.
“The reason we came out to audition for the show in Adelaide was for a bit of a laugh and because a few of the boys wanted a day off school,” Reece said. “My friends now keep telling me the reason I won was because they told me to go down to the auditions.” Next year is set to be a big and busy year for the teenager as he prepares to go on a national tour, head back home to crack the big UK music market and write and release his own album of originals. “I’ve been writing my own music since I was 12 and I’ve got a lot of originals ready to go for my next album,” Reece said. Reece said it didn’t bother him that 2010 ‘X Factor’ winner Altiyan Childs still hasn’t released his own album of original material more than a year after winning the Channel Seven series.
Reece had locals screaming last week during a visit to Westfield Penrith. Thousands turned out to greet the singing sensation, who performed and signed copies of his album. People of all ages turned out to the event.

SUPER SOUNDS
Seattle Sound set to rock the Penrith RSL this weekend
O
ne of the Sydney’s hottest and most experienced live bands, Seattle Sound, are back to send off the year in a huge way when they rock out the Penrith RSL tonight, December 16. Beginning in 1996, Sydney’s number one cover band formed at the height of the grunge music era. Bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were taking the world by storm, selling millions of albums across the globe and creating anthems for a generation. Interestingly, these bands all came out of one place – Seattle, Washington, USA. Back in the early days of Seattle Sound their playlists were flooded with the popular hits of those Seattle-based bands. Over time they’ve had to update, adapt and develop with people’s changing tastes in music. “We originally started doing Seattle sound music but now it’s not really like that,” lead singer, John Perry said. “It started off with Pearl Jam and when Nirvana broke big 15 years ago, but from then on it’s evolved into a lot of other things. We’ve changed a lot in 16 years and some of those songs and artists we did before just don’t really work now.”
John said over the years the band have had to update their playlists largely due to the rather youthful crowds they play to at some of Sydney’s most popular nightspots. “If we were to go to a popular venue these days and play ‘Spoonman’ by Soundgarden or ‘Even Flow’ by Pearl Jam, it’s basically blank faces,” he said. “A lot of this Seattle area music we started doing 16 years ago and some of these 20-yearold’s in the crowd would’ve been five at the time when these bands were big. “So now in a two-hour show we’ll do two sets that include music by the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, U2, Green Day, Kings Of Leon, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.” Seattle Sound has performed at a countless number of venues in the Sydney area over the years but a local stage here in Penrith is among the band’s favourites. “Every time we play at the Penrith RSL we have an awesome time and I’m not just saying that,” John said. “We have a really good time at the RSL because at the Showroom we play in there’s nothing else in that room except for the band. “We go to other venues and the management will turn around and say to us ‘that’s a great crowd tonight’ but you can still get a lot of people at the venue that don’t really care about the band. However, the RSL gives you a really good gauge on how strong the band really is.” Seattle Sound return to one of their mostloved venues on Friday, December 16 at 8pm.

STELLAR SEASON
Q Theatre reveals a strong line-up of works for 2012 season
T
his year was an amazing year for first run and high-class productions at Penrith’s Q Theatre. And 2012 is already set to be a knockout season with 10 fantastic productions promising audiences a bit of everything from vibrant comedies to powerful drama, from inspirational music to high romance, from nail-biting circus to opera to die for! Featuring a host of great performers including Annie Byron, Henri Szeps and Kristy Best, and productions from touring companies including Bell Shakespeare and Circus Oz, as well as three premiere productions from the Q Theatre Company, 2012 is set to be one of their best ever seasons. The season kicks off in March, when one of
THEATRE Australia’s favourite actors, Henri Szeps, takes to the stage in his one-man show, the touching and hilarious ‘Wish I’d Said That’. Henri takes his audience on a comic journey to prove that the world may be a stage but not everyone is a star. In May, acclaimed performer Darren Coggan returns to the Q with ‘War Stories: A Salute In Story And Song To The ANZAC Spirit’. Inspired by his own family history, Darren connects us to an iconic part of our heritage in this moving and magical piece of theatre. Also in May, ‘Truck Stop’, the new Australian play by award-winning playwright Lachlan Philpott (‘Silent Disco’) will have its world premiere at the Q Theatre. Commissioned by the Q Theatre Company and developed in Penrith, this important, funny and confronting work, shines the headlights on sex, gender, raunch culture and growing up in the ‘burbs’. In August, Bell Shakespeare brings an exhilarating new production called ‘Moliere’s School For Wives’ to town. September see’s a new play by Don Reid called ‘Biddies’, which casts a loving and mischievous eye over the female species. The hilarious Wharf Revue team are back again in October to take another swipe at our politicians and popular culture. In November, the Q Theatre Company and CarriageWorks present the Australian premiere production of ‘Full Gallop: The Vreeland Project’, based on legendary Vogue Editor, Diana Vreeland. Vreeland reigned as Empress of Fashion for over 50 years and was one of the most influential women of the 20th century. She was adored, loathed, feared and outrageously original. ‘Full Gallop’ is a run amok comedy about a
remarkable woman. The 2012 Q Theatre Subscription Season is on sale now with special discount offers for
subscribers who book before December 31. To book or for more information call 4723 7600 or visit www.qtheatre.com.au.

CHRISTMAS PLAY
SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS ImagineNations Church set to present amazing play this weekend in Penrith
A
sweet family Christmas show will take place at ImagineNations Church tonight and over the weekend. Young Bella is sick in bed, so Nanna comes to tell her a story. At first Bella is not so keen but as the story unfolds, Bella’s imagination begins to bring the story to life – and sometimes makes the characters even larger than life. ‘Once Upon A Kingdom’ is a Christmas production for all ages. With a giant book (artwork by well-renowned artist Di Hoath, pictured) and a cupboard that is filled with all sorts of characters, the audience will rediscover the wonder, the joy and funny side of the Christmas story through the eyes of a child. The production includes an amazing song and dance by a local 50 member voice choir, as well as moments that will make you cry with laughter as Bella’s imagination takes over. Every child will receive a story book of their own to keep and all visitors will have the opportunity to win some great family prizes. There will be food and drink for sale to support Westcare Community Services. ‘Once Upon A Kingdom’ will be held tonight, December 16 at ImagineNations Church at 7pm. There will also be performances on Saturday, December 17 at 7pm and Sunday, December 18 at 5.30pm. Plenty of parking is offered on the grounds and there’ll be no reserved seating in the auditorium, so make sure you get there early to get a great seat. This promises to be a fun-filled and festive night! ImagineNations Church is located at Cnr Northern Road and Frogmore Road, Orchard Hills (near the M4 motorway). MUST SEE MOVIE
CRUISE IS BACK
Mission Impossible series gets a new chapter, and Tom is along for the ride
T
om Cruise is back doing what he does best – being an action star! ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ is the fourth and latest installment in the popular spy movie franchise. Cruise reprises his role of IMF (Impossible Missions Force) Agent Ethan Hunt and also, as always, has a hand in producing the movie alongside big-time Hollywood producer J.J. Abrams. A terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin while Hunt (Cruise) is carrying out an undercover operation in Moscow. The Russian Government categorises the attack as ‘an undeclared act of war’, prompting the US Government to initiate a black operation known as ‘ghost protocol’, disavowing the entire IMF. Hunt and his four-person team are allowed to escape from the government’s custody as part of
a plan to enable them to operate outside of their agency’s command structure. However, when the IMF is ambushed, they are forced to operate without any kind of official support in an attempt to locate an intelligence source connected to the Moscow bombing and the attack on the IMF. Along with Cruise, the film also stars twotime Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘The Town’), Simon Pegg (‘Hot Fuzz’) and Anil Kapoor (‘Slumdog Millionaire’). Filming for the movie took place in various exotic locations around the globe including Dubai, Prague, Moscow, Mumbai, Bangalore and Vancouver. One of the movie’s most iconic scenes is where Hunt scales the outside of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa tower, which is the tallest building in the world. Cruise filmed the entire scene without the use of a stunt double. First reviews so far out of the US have seen the movie gain a mostly mixed response. One critic from Screen International said: “Fuelled by Tom Cruise’s propulsive, sometimes literally death-defying performance, this fourth installment is arguably the strongest of the series”. Another critic also praised the movie: “The script won’t take home any awards but you won’t care once you’ve seen the unrelenting action sequences. My eyes were glued to the screen and my heart rate definitely increased!” A critic from Variety wasn’t that complimentary: “It’s a movie of dazzling individual parts that don’t come together to fully satisfying effect in the final stretch”. So whether you’re a Tom Cruise fan or not – it doesn’t matter! ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ is set to be one of the year’s best action flicks and will have you jumping on the cinema seats in excitement! ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ is now showing at Hoyts Penrith and is rated M.

HARRY POTTER FANS GO WILD
FYI gets the lowdown from Global Experience Specialists’ Chief Creative Officer, Eddie Newquist, on why families should visit ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ these school holidays…
T
he ‘Harry Potter’ franchise is one of the biggest money makers in entertainment history, spanning film, DVD, video games, consumer products and books. And now thanks to the newly opened ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ at the Powerhouse Museum, fans have the chance to look inside the famous wizard’s magical world and get the opportunity to experience the amazing craftsmanship of hundreds of authentic costumes and props from the ‘Harry Potter’ films. Hundreds of artefacts will be displayed in impressive settings inspired by the film sets, including the Great Hall, Hagrid’s hut and the Gryffindor common room. Fans will encounter iconic props and costumes including Harry’s original wand and glasses, costumes from Hogwarts Yule Ball, props from the most dramatic Quidditch matches, a study model of Dobby the house-elf and much more. ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ is currently on show at Sydney’s Powerhouse
Museum until March 18, 2012. For more information and to book tickets visit www.powerhousemuseum. com. Why should Harry Potter fans visit this Exhibition? ‘Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ is the ultimate celebration of the ‘Harry Potter’ film series. It’s an absolutely amazing experience because we have props, artefacts and costumes from the entire film series. When the film fans come in it’s a whole other story, they get to really understand and appreciate some of the things that go by so fast in the film, so it’s really an opportunity to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that go into making a film series like this. What can people see at the Exhibition? We have over 200 original props, costumes and dressings from the
film series – from the very first film ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ to the very last film ‘The Deathly Hallows Part II’. We have Harry’s glasses, his wand, his invitation to Hogwarts, those are really cool and I think everybody wants to see those. We also allow you to see some brand new things from ‘The Deathly Hallows Part II’ like Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, we’ve got the sword of Gryffindor for the very first time in the Exhibition (which was a major prop used in the last film) and we’ve also got the invisibility cloak that Harry uses throughout the entire film series. What interactive things can fans do at the Exhibition? The Exhibition has a lot of pretty cool interactive things. We allow you to play Quidditch, sit in Hagrid’s chair and go into his hut and explore some of the things that he’s doing in there. We also allow you to pull your own Mandrake in the Herbology vignette, so there are lots of fun things for kids and families to do.
