FROM STREET BUSKING TO SUPERSTARDOM Nathan Taylor chats with Samson Cosray Smith of Justice Crew about their rise to fame, touring with international artists and their upcoming tour at Penrith Panthers…
T
he seven member dance troupe Justice Crew are much more than just your run-of-the-mill dance act. Why? Because in a little under two years Justice Crew have gone from relatively unknown street performers to an explosive ARIA award nominated music act. Justice Crew were thrown into the limelight after winning the 2010 series of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and founding member of the dance group, Samson Cosray Smith, said the ride to success over the last two years has blown him away. “Before we hit the big time we used to busk on the city streets for money,” he said. “We’d go to Pitt Street in Sydney at about 11 o’clock in the morning and finish at about 6 o’clock at night. The money we earned would pay for our food and train ticket home. “Fast forward to this year and we’ve toured with the likes of Janet Jackson and Chris Brown, as well as travelling and performing interstate, which has been an amazing and crazy experience.” To kick off 2012, Justice Crew will be taking their singing and dancing talents to the EVAN Theatre at Penrith Panthers for their ‘Sexy And You Know It’ tour, which will explore the individual skills and talents of each Crew member. “Our previous tour went really well and we were performing sell-out shows but this tour will be more focused on our individual talents,” Samson said. “Each member of the Crew has their own little dance and it’s real personal and very intimate with the audience. We’ll be doing a lot of crowd interaction which is always cool.” A school motif has worked well in the past for the troupe - who impressed ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ judges Dannii Minogue, Kyle Sandilands and Brian McFadden with a schoolyard themed dance in the finals of the television show. For their latest show the boys from Justice Crew will be revisiting the theme with a twist. The members of the Crew will each

play the role of school students with their own individual superpowers, before they all come together to combine forces to become one big superpower crew. “There are seven members and each Crew member has their own little story,” Samson said. “It starts off with how they got their power and how they can use their power in the dance routines. “During our first tour my power was my helmet, which meant strength to be able to do head spins. In this tour I no longer need my helmet and it’s all about inner strength. We’ll have a narrator telling the story, so the whole audience can follow along.” Samson said a lot of preparation goes into putting together a full stage show like the ‘Sexy And You Know It’ tour. This forces the boys to practice their routines in crazy places any spare moment they get. “Any time we have a spare minute we’ll be training,” he said. “We’ve trained at airports, hotels, it’s been crazy because we want to try and get the routines down pat before Christmas when everyone goes away on holidays.” Joining Justice Crew at their show at Penrith Panthers will be pop and RnB group Young Men Society (YMS), who most recently featured on this year’s ‘X Factor’. Samson said he’s looking forward to catching up with some of his old dance buddies in YMS. “A long time ago I used to be in the same dance group as the three boys in YMS and we competed in the Australian Hip Hop Nationals together,” he said. “It’s crazy because we were supporting them on ‘X Factor’ and now they’re coming on tour supporting us.” It’s been a wild ride for Justice Crew ever since they took out the title of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2010. Justice Crew became the first dance act ever to win the Australian version of the competition, which has since inspired dance acts all over the world to

follow in their footsteps. Their win landed them $250,000 in prize money, which the boys all split evenly amongst each member. “We all put a percentage of the winnings into an account so we can all stay together as a crew,” Samson said. “With the rest of the money we all had to pay off debts, pay our families back through that whole process on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, as well as go on one big shopping spree, which was crazy good.” Not long after the show, Justice Crew had another secret talent under their sleeve – the ability to turn their dance act into a music act after they revealed they could not only dance like seasoned professionals but sing as well. “After the show we went to Sony Music and did a proposal,” Samson said. “We performed in front of the CEO and other management and Sony said let’s give the first single a try. Sony threw a song at us ‘And Then We Dance’, we went straight into the recording studio and then found out a couple of weeks later the song went Gold (35,000 units sold) and now they just keep giving us more singles to record.” Justice Crew have so far released
four pop/dance singles including the now platinum ‘And Then We Dance’, the double platinum top 20 hit ‘Friday To Sunday’, ‘Dance With Me’ featuring American rapper Flo Rida and their latest offering ‘Sexy And You Know It’. Samson said singing wasn’t the plan at the beginning because the opportunity wasn’t there. “Singing wasn’t our number one priority because dancing was our passion,” he said. “Singing was something we always wanted to do, so when we went into Sony we’re like ‘This could actually happen!’. The Sony label is huge and that was a big drive for us to go hard and give it our all.” Justice Crew will kick off the New Year at Penrith Panthers on Friday, January 13 at 7.30pm. All tickets are $41.50. To book or for more information call 1800 061 991.

MUSICAL TREASURE
You’ll be amazed when The Jolly Boys play at the Joan Sutherland Centre
T
he Jolly Boys are one of the world’s great living music treasures and they’re headed to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre for their very first Australian concert on Friday, January 6. The Jolly Boys are a six-piece Mento band from Jamaica whose music fuses classic mento with contemporary rock and pop standards. They even do an amazing cover of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab’. Mento was the music of the Jamaican dancehalls before ska, rocksteady and reggae came along. Dating back to the late 19th century and often confused with calypso, it has a rawness and rhythmic feel that is uniquely Jamaican. For nearly 60 years, The Jolly Boys have
been integral to the fabric of Jamaica’s musical landscape and cultural heritage. With their latest album, ‘Great Expectation’, The Jolly Boys give a mento makeover to the likes of Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’, Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’ and even New Order’s classic ‘Blue Monday’. The Jolly Boys’ rise into the music industry is a story worth telling. In 1946, actor Errol Flynn purchased Navy Island in Jamaica. Here Flynn berthed his yacht and staged unending parties that became the stuff of legend.

The entertainment Flynn featured most often was a small local group called the Navy Island Swamp Boys. The mentos, calypsos and rumbas they played were the perfect soundtrack for the excesses of Flynn and his friends. When the band expanded, Flynn dubbed them ‘The Jolly Boys’ and their music quickly came to define mento and calypso entertainment in Jamaica. The Jolly Boys had a committed core of musicians, even though up to 18 members
have passed through the group over the years. By the end of the ‘60s, the band had become an important part of Jamaica’s north coast entertainment industry, often performing with dance troupes in floorshows for VIP visitors. Few artists come close to matching the longevity, potency and originality of The Jolly Boys in terms of their sound, style and impact. The Jolly Boys light up the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Friday, January 6 at 8pm. To book, call 4723 7600.

10 BOXING DAY MOVIES
MOVIE MAYHEM
funny pair Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller team up in the hit action comedy ‘Tower Heist’.
Our entertainment experts Nathan Taylor and Jonathan Pullen take a look at the big blockbuster movies headed your way this Boxing Day…
I
t’s that time of year again when all the festivities of Christmas are over, the presents have been unwrapped and when all the year’s biggest flicks are about to be released. This Boxing Day there’s an enormous six major movies hitting the Australian silver screens including ‘Happy Feet 2’, ‘We Bought A Zoo’ and ‘The Adventures Of Tintin’ for the families, ‘War Horse’ and ‘Iron Lady’ for the history buffs, and
‘Happy Feet 2’ is the hilarious new sequel to 2008’s Oscar-winning ‘Happy Feet’. The film contains a mammoth amount of Hollywood star power with Robin Williams, Elijah Wood, Pink, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Sofia Vergara all lending their voice talents to the movie. Mumble (Wood) the penguin has a problem – his son Erik (Ava Acres), who is reluctant to dance, encounters The Mighty Sven, a penguin who can fly! Things get worse for Mumble when the world is shaken by powerful forces, causing him to bring together the penguin nations and their allies to set things right. The movie was released late last month in the United States and so far has grossed over US $100 million at the box office. Movie critics have had their varying opinions and so far ‘Happy Feet 2’ has received mixed reviews. Time magazine gave the film a positive review stating: ‘Director George Miller is not content to duplicate the pleasures of his first penguin film; he dares to go bigger, deeper, higher — happier.’ ‘Happy Feet 2’ is perfect viewing for the family and is rated PG. ‘We Bought A Zoo’ is the feel good family movie of the year starring Hollywood A-listers Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (‘Jerry Maguire’) directs an amazing and true story about a single dad (Damon) who decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places – a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family
works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory. The movie is based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee about how the author and his family used their life savings to buy Dartmoor Zoological Park, a rundown zoo, full of over 200 exotic animals facing destruction, in the English countryside. The film has yet to debut anywhere in the world but critics have so far been raving about this movie from early preview screenings. One critic from Entertainment Weekly said: ‘From the high-concept title to the family-friendly story line, it’s basically a Tim Allen movie, only made with taste and feeling.’

‘We Bought A Zoo’ is rated PG. ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ stands as this year’s premier performance capture 3D film. Based on the original comic books created by Belgian Georges Remi (Hergé), the film follows The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham’s Treasure. Tintin, the irrepressible young reporter, relentlessly follows a good story, which throws him into a world of high adventure and danger. Starring a stellar cast including Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Daniel Craig as Red Rackham, the film has fit each original character perfectly.

BOXING DAY MOVIES ‘The Iron Lady’ is an upcoming British biopic about England’s only female and longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century, Margaret Thatcher. The film is narrated through a series of Thatcher’s flashbacks, including the 17 days leading up to the Falklands War in 1982. Almost over-shadowing the content of the film is Meryl Streep’s outstanding performance as the ‘Iron Lady’, Thatcher. While the film has drawn criticism that it exploits Thatcher’s infirmities, Meryl Streep’s portrayal has attracted nothing but universal praise. Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail wrote: ‘Only an actress of Streep’s stature could possibly capture Thatcher’s essence and bring it to the screen. It’s a performance of towering proportions that sets a new benchmark for acting.’ ‘The Iron Lady’ is bound to receive widespread accolades and is rated PG.
Directed by Hollywood’s undisputed master, Steven Spielberg, the comic classic’s transition to the big screen has prompted many critics to hail it as being at the forefront of motion capture. David Stratton of ‘At the Movies’ said: ‘Steven Spielberg’s faithful adaptation of the Hergé comic books about Tintin, the journalist and boy detective, is the best example yet of the motion capture process.’ ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ is a must for families and is rated PG. ‘War Horse’, directed by Steven Spielberg, follows the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called
Albert, who trains and tames him. The two become forcefully parted which then sees Joey move through a WWI torn Europe, inspiring the lives of those he crosses paths with. Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter wrote: ‘An atmospheric, tear-jerking, highly cinematic melodrama.’ Before the emotional climax of the film, moviegoers will witness a story driven by joy and sorrow, unyielding friendship and unbreakable will. Starring relatively unknown, but talented actor Jeremy Irvine, this is a must see film for the summer. ‘War Horse’ is rated PG.
So far the movie has received nothing but positive reviews from the critics with one reviewer praising Eddie Murphy’s return to comedy saying: ‘As a special message from me to Eddie Murphy...man, I really missed you. Welcome back.’ ‘Tower Heist’ is rated M.
‘Tower Heist’ is a crime comedy flick directed by Brett Ratner (‘Rush Hour’ series) and stars two of the world’s best comedians in Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. The movie is a comedy caper about working stiffs who seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them. After the workers at a luxury Central Park condominium discover the penthouse billionaire has stolen their retirement, they plot the ultimate revenge – a heist to reclaim what he took from them. Along with Stiller and Murphy, the film also stars Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick and Tea Leoni. ‘Tower Heist’ did exceptionally well at the US box office, raking in over US $122 million when it was released back in October.
