Emily Crane catches up with the legendary rocker Bobby Rydell, who is performing at the Blacktown Workers Club next month...
STILL PLAYING THE OLD CLASSICS
F
ootage of a youthful Olivia Newton John and John Travolta dancing and flirting with each other at Rydell High will be forever etched into history thanks to the hit film ‘Grease’. But what about the music legend whose name originally inspired the famous Rydell High to begin with? To say that Bobby Rydell’s influence on popular music has been quite profound would be an understatement. So much so that when the producers of the world’s largest selling movie soundtrack album, ‘Grease’, wanted to pay tribute to the era in which it was set, they named the school where most of the action took place as Rydell High. In 1995 his hometown of Philadelphia named the street he was born the ‘Bobby Rydell Boulevard’ – quite a tribute to a city’s favourite native son. And even Wildwood, New Jersey, has a street named for Bobby in appreciation for his massive hit ‘Wildwood Days’. But despite his worldwide fame, Bobby is still humble and says he is only in it for his fans. “I have a very good fan base and each time I come down to Australia it’s like a love affair,” he gushed. “I just see the looks on their faces and no matter what I do, it’s like I can’t do anything wrong in their eyes.” Bobby’s career spans six decades and encompasses every area of entertainment – making him deserving of his reputation as a classic performer. He is a superb singer whose voice has matured over the years and he has proved to be an outstanding drummer, an agile dancer and an extremely fine

actor, with an unsurpassed knack for comedy. His debut in the late 50s as a rock n roll teen idol lead to starring roles on such hit films as ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ and plays such as ‘West Side Story’. Bobby has also made countless network television appearances throughout the world on shows such as ‘Ed Sullivan’, ‘Jack Benny’, ‘George Burns’, ‘Milton Berle’, ‘Perry Como’, ‘American Bandstand’ and ‘Brian Henderson’s Bandstand’. A polished performer at the age of 19, Bobby was the youngest ever person to headline the famous Copacabana in New York. But it’s his successful singing career that brings him back to Australia year after year. Bobby’s recording career earned him 34 top 40 hits placing him in the top five artists of the era. His hits include singles ‘Volare’, ‘Wild One’, ‘We Got Love’, ‘Kissin’ Time’, ‘Swinging School’ and ‘Forget Him’, which sold more than 25 million records over the years. Today, Bobby enjoys a busy schedule throughout the world as a headline performer. Whilst he performs regularly in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, for the past 25 years he has also performed on hundreds of shows with Frankie Avalon and Fabian, with the trio as the Golden Boys. Australia has welcomed him for some 20 years and now Bobby is gearing up for another tour next month. “Every chance I get I can’t wait to come back to Australia,” Bobby said. “My first appearance was in 1969 at the old Sydney Stadium. It’s exciting to see the people I’ve met over those years

every 18 months when I come back. “I could just live [in Australia] tomorrow. Everything is great and the reception is really phenomenal.” Despite his myriad of hits, Bobby says his Australian fans are always keen to hear the old records – some of which he doesn’t even play in the United States. “There are some big hits that are bigger in Australia than America and I never did them when I first came here,” he said. “Fans came up to me and said ‘what about this, what about that’, so I started playing them.” Pre-1962 songs like ‘The ChaCha-Cha’, ‘Good Time Baby’, ‘Swingin’ School’ and ‘Kissin’ Time’ are crowd favourites here in Australia, according to Bobby. “‘Kissin’ Time was a hit for me in the States and Australia, to the point where I even recorded an Australia version of the song,” Bobby said. The seasoned performer plays with local bands and musicians when he tours abroad, and he’ll tour Australia with the Allstars Orchestra and The AllStars when he comes down under in March. “The musicianship in Australia is
absolutely phenomenal. I’ve never had a problem with any band in Australia – that’s the least of my worries,” he said. “The only time I worry is if I’m in a city and there’s no Oyster Kilpatrick on the menu, then I get really mad.” Of all the teen idols of the day the singing and performance of Bobby Rydell was unquestionably the most polished. The teen idol, now a seasoned performer, continues to sell out shows throughout the world, and without any doubt Bobby Rydell is a true American music icon. He is well regarded in the music industry with the likes of Bob Hayden from Big Beat of The Fifties saying: “If you have not seen Bobby Rydell perform you have deprived yourself of something very special. When he returns to Australia make sure you are there!”
Bobby Rydell and The All Stars will play live at the Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, March 17 at 8pm. Tickets are $45. For more information and to purchase tickets call 9830 0600 or visit www. workersclub.com.au.

DON’T MISS THIS The film everyone is talking about comes to Hoyts Penrith
I
t’s ‘awards season’ over in Hollywood and it’s time for Aussie audiences to catch all the films that the critics love and the big golden statues get awarded to – ‘The Artist’ is one of those films. It’s Hollywood 1927, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky’s the limit – major movie stardom awaits. ‘The Artist’ tells the story of their interlinked destinies. The foreign film stars French actors Jean Dujardin, as silent star George Valentin, and Bérénice Bejo, who plays Peppy Miller, a young actress who’s chasing her big break. Most of ‘The Artist’ is silent, it is purely shown in black-and-white and has been receiving nominations from nearly every international movie awards ceremony across the globe. At the recent Golden Globe Awards, the film was nominated for six statues, the most of any film that year. It took home half, winning ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’, ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy’.
Probably the coolest thing about this movie is how authentically true it is to the silent movies of early last century. ‘The Artist’ was made in the same screen ratio commonly used in the silent film era. Even though the film is presented in blackand-white, it was actually shot in colour. All the technical aspects including lenses, lighting and camera moves, were calibrated to get the look just right. ‘The Artist’ is a critics’ dream. It’s almost impossible to find a critic out there who doesn’t have something good to say about this film. On review website Rotten Tomatoes, 97 per cent of critics gave the film a positive review based on more than 160 reviews. One critic loved all the emotional levels the film portrays: “A gift that keeps on giving, ‘The Artist’ is a film that demands your attention at every moment. All senses are glued to the screen and director Michel Hazanavicius delivers with drama, laughter, romance and stellar performances from his cast”. Another critic from the UK’s Uncut Magazine commented on the film’s silent aspect: “Initially, the lack of spoken dialogue is discomfiting. Once you’ve adjusted to its storytelling conventions, though, you almost forget that this is a silent film”. So in the words of Molly Meldrum, do yourself a favour this week and head back in time to the golden age of Hollywood cinema and check out the movie that has everyone talking… well? ‘The Artist’ is rated PG and is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith.

This debut album of yours is fantastic, how would you sum up the album? It’s a little jigsaw puzzle about Jess Holland. It’s a great insight into my personality, who I am and my experiences. I consider it to be a strong album with quite a ‘ballsy’ kind of lyric, which sums me up quite well.
How have people responded to the album? I’ve received great feedback, which I’m very excited about. I’m establishing quite a good fan base, which is very exciting. From a young girl you were learning the crafts of country music, was there any question that you were going to head in that direction? I don’t know whether it was always on the cards to be a country artist. I’ve always loved country music and performing, it’s in my blood and in my genes. I guess it was a natural progression for me but it was never a definite thing, I just knew I really enjoyed it. You were part of this successful band called McGee for many years, why did you decide to leave that and go solo? McGee was a flat out rock band, I did enjoy it but I really always enjoyed country music and I wanted to get myself out there
as a solo artist. For me that was the next step for people to get to know who I am and enjoy my music and it really was a great way for me to come out of my skin and step out of the shadows of McGee. Everyone knew me as the frontwoman of McGee but didn’t know Jess Holland as a person. 2011 was a huge year for you as a solo artist with plenty of touring and plenty of awards won, can you believe all this success has happened so fast? I’ve been extremely lucky and a lot of it has been purely the right place at the right time. I’ve really enjoyed every part of it and it’s such a great experience. What do you have on the horizon for 2012? I’ll be doing a lot of touring and promotion for my new album. I’ve got a film clip coming out this month on the Country Music Channel, which I’m really excited about.
