Nathan Taylor gets the lowdown on one of the most mythical and fiery extravaganzas to ever hit western Sydney...
RARMIAN LEARNS TO TRAIN A DRAGON
E
veryone between five to 85 years of age are in for a real treat this month when one of the most successful animated movies of the last decade, ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, comes to life right before their eyes. RZO Dragon Productions and Global Creatures – the masterminds behind the worldwide phenomenon ‘Walking With Dinosaurs: The Arena Spectacular’ – are bringing high-flying, fire breathing dragons to life in an unprecedented live entertainment event for an international audience, beginning right here in Australia. ‘How To Train Your Dragon – Arena Spectacular’ is an epic arena adventure inspired by the Academy Award nominated DreamWorks Animation film of the same name. The local performances will ignite at Sydney Olympic Park’s Allphones Arena on Thursday, March 15 and will run with subsequent performances until Sunday, March 25. Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, said he was excited that one of DreamWorks’ biggest movies has taken on this new form. “In our film, audiences around the world were transported to the mythical world of Vikings and dragons, and now, we are excited to immerse them in a one-of-a-kind live event in ‘How To Train Your Dragon – Arena Spectacular’,” he said. “The innovative team at Global Creatures and the creative storytellers at DreamWorks Animation have done an inspired job in every imaginable way to present this story on an unprecedented scale that will take audiences to unforgettable new heights.”
FYi Issue 74 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au
The 2010 animated blockbuster ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ was a worldwide box office smash, grossing approximately $500 million and was one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. In the upcoming highly anticipated arena spectacular, audiences at Allphones Arena will have the unique opportunity to experience the world of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ in this unique theatrical event that promises to break every rule of traditional arena entertainment. The astounding cast of characters features 24 dragons, some with wingspans of up to 14 metres, Viking warriors and world-class circus and acrobatic performers. It will also host unrivalled production values, projections, flying, stunts, fire and pyrotechnics. The show centres on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view. Playing the starring role of Hiccup is young Melbourne actor and Helpmann Award winner, Rarmian Newton. Rarmian was last seen in the 2008 production of ‘Billy Elliot the Musical’, for which he won his coveted Helpmann Award. This time Rarmian will really be put to the test when he flies around the arena on the back of an Animatronic dragon, falling, being caught in mid-air and at times hanging by a dragon fin! Rarmian said he did plenty of training to help him prepare for his acrobatic new role. “Well I did part-time training at NICA

(National Institute of Circus Arts), which I think really helped with the acrobatic circus aspects of the show,” he said. Rarmian is no stranger to the big stage. Along with his major role in ‘Billy Elliot’, he has also starred alongside Australian acting royalty by the name of Hugh Jackman in ‘The Boy From Oz’, as well as being a star performer at 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Rarmian said the audition process for the role of Hiccup was unlike anything he had experienced before. “It was probably the strangest yet most enjoyable audition I’ve been to yet,” he said. “The audition was made up of improvisational ‘clowning’ exercises with the dragons. But of course we didn’t have the physical dragons at the time, so we were basically acting to a brick wall.” Rarmian’s brilliant improvisation acting didn’t just earn him the lead role in Australia but a ‘round the world’ ticket to stardom, as he prepares to tour the ‘How To Train Your Dragon – Arena Spectacular’ across the globe. “I can’t even begin to describe how much of an amazing experience it will be, I’m doing what I love and getting to see the world at the same time,”
Rarmian said. Rarmian isn’t the only Aussie cast in the worldwide production with 19-yearold Queenslander, Sarah McCreanor, earning the female lead of Astrid, the finest dragon slayer amongst the crew. Rarmian said there were so many exciting elements to the show that would have audiences wishing they were among the cast and dragons on the arena floor. “It’s the mixture of amazing visual effects such as projections, lasers, Animatronic dragons, all teamed with a talented group of performers that makes this show truly unique,” he said. The Dragons in the ‘Arena Spectacular’ were created by the clever team at The Creature Technology Company and will use state-of-theart computer software to make the creatures perform in ways that were previously unimaginable.
‘How To Train Your Dragon – Arena Spectacular’ will perform at Sydney Olympic Park from Thursday, March 15. Tickets start from $49.90. For more information and to purchase tickets call 132 849.

Emily Crane chats to music legend Rick Price about his remarkable career
A
ustralian singer/songwriter Rick Price has walked the journey many musicians’ dreams are made of. From the very beginning, as a nine-year-old and the youngest member of his family’s band, music was Rick’s passion. Since those humble yet defining days set amongst the backdrop of country Queensland, the self-taught artist has forged an internationally praised and respected career spanning more than three decades, earning him double platinum status for his greatest hits and numerous industry awards. Rick relocated to Nashville, USA in 2009, primarily to tour with his buddy and great friend, Tommy Emmanuel. Together they toured for one year around the USA and Europe.
Following the tour, Rick jumped straight into co-writing with other artists in Nashville. The result will certainly be a surprise to some of his diehard fans. Love is a recurring theme in his new work – where it once spoke of heartbreak and loss, there is now hope and transformation. “I guess songs can often reflect what’s going on in your life. I got married this year and that kind of turned the tables,” Rick said. ‘The Water’s Edge’ indicates new influences and a broader style for Rick. While there are still echoes of a great pop artist, country and blues meld beautifully with folk sounds to create an album that transcends genre. Rick Price returns to Australia and Asia in March to launch this stunning album. ‘The Water’s Edge’, which is his first release of new songs since 2003, has been crafted and honed and is receiving critical acclaim from fellow artists in the industry. “I took a five year break from recording my own stuff… but I’m always writing. Some of the songs recorded [on the new album] were written between 2003 and 2008,” Rick said. ‘The Water’s Edge’ has 10 tracks including ‘I’ve Got It Good’, ‘River’ and ‘It Starts With A Kiss’. Produced, recorded and mixed by Ben Wisch in New York and additional recording by Don Kerce in Nashville, this album has all the elements of an international sound combined with the Aussie Rick timbre we know and love. “I really love the album – I wanted it to feel uplifting, so naturally the lyrics followed,” he said. “‘Shape of my Heart’ is probably my favourite, it is a song that has come out really well.” Rick Price is currently touring Australia. Henry Szeps returns to Penrith for hilarious oneman play
F
ollowing on from his previous successes with ‘I’m Not A Dentist’ and ‘Why Kids?’, writer and performer Henri Szeps returns to the Q Theatre stage in his latest one man play, the touching and hilarious ‘Wish I’d Said That’. Joe Bleakley is a ‘retired’ actor who reached for the stars but never got much further than mediocrity. After recently arriving at Foggadieu Retirement Village, Joe decides that he will stage a performance for the other residents and puts together a selection of his favourite speeches
from some of the great roles he never got to play. Throughout his show, audiences are treated to excerpts from ‘King Lear’, ‘Teahouse of the August Moon’ and titbits of wisdom from Neil Simon, Eugene O’Neill and Oscar Hammerstein II. In between we learn about the man, his joys and triumphs, his disappointments, his difficult relationship with his daughter and his irrepressible hope. And it’s all peppered with humorous anecdotes, jokes, songs and observations about life, family and getting older. This is a play about growing older, family, career, global warming and pollution, racism and what it means to be human. Henri Szeps draws on his wealth of experience as a performer, father and husband to create a gregarious and likeable character in the form of Joe Bleakley. Henri was most recently seen in the Ensemble Theatre’s touring production of ‘Halpern & Johnson’, which reunited him with his on-screen brother, Garry McDonald, from the classic ABC hit series ‘Mother & Son’. Henri’s previous two one-man shows, ‘I’m Not A Dentist’ and ‘Why Kids?’ also toured throughout the country to great acclaim. The entertaining ‘Wish I’d Said That’ plays at the Q Theatre from Tuesday, March 20 to Saturday, March 24. Tickets are $48 for adults, $43 for concessions and $42 for groups of 10 or more. To book or for more information call 4723 7600 or visit www.qtheatre.com.au.

hey came to listen to the man who’s mission it is to transform the local community’s biggest asset – the Penrith Panthers. What they got was an inspirational talk on leadership from Phil Gould, who had everyone transfixed by his words. Mr Gould was the guest speaker at the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Business Matters luncheon, held last Thursday at Panthers. Around 100 people attended, mainly local business people keen to hear Mr Gould’s words of wisdom. Those in attendance enjoyed a three course cour meal and beverages.
