Nathan Taylor chats with world famous hypnotist Peter Powers, all the way from his home in London, about using hypnotism for comedy, as well as for good…

EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF PETER

P

eter Powers is one of the most successful hypnotists in the world today. He is known for putting people in the strangest of situations, all in the name of hypnotism. This month he’s set to put locals under a spell when he tours both the St Marys Band Club and Penrith Panthers World of Entertainment. Peter’s live stage shows are so popular that he draws crowds three times larger than his nearest rivals in each of the countries he performs, making him “the biggest box office hypnotist” around today. Peter said you can never really plan for a show like his because each night is always as unpredictable as the last. “You never really know what’s going to happen. You can have routines that you plan to do and you will see somebody react differently each time,” he said. “The shows are so spontaneous and I have a lot of fun with that because it’s almost like winging it every time you do a show.” Referred to as a “comedy genius”, “a hypnotist without equal” and the “best in the business”, Peter seems to delight in the antics of his hapless volunteers almost as much as his audiences. In fits of hysterical laughter, Peter appears to lose himself in each performance, pushing the boundaries of a somewhat wayward humour in his distinctive, mischievous and impish style. Although the audience experiences a rollercoaster ride on the very edge of what could be considered sane and proper, Peter manages to give onlookers an ample glimpse of potential danger and mind-manipulation-gone-wrong, while impossibly striking the balance of

FYi Issue 75 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au

not taking hypnosis too far. “One funny thing I did recently was I had somebody sit on their feet for 20 minutes with one leg crossed over the other,” Peter said. “During that time I was using other subjects and didn’t realise he’d been sitting in that position for so long. I decided to wake everybody up and got them to stand in a line. When the man who’d been sitting down so long came over it was obvious one of his legs had gone dead, as I could see him limping toward the line. I just started laughing straight away. “I said to him: ‘Do you have jelly legs?’ He said: ‘Yes I do!’ I said to him: ‘When I click my fingers twice the other leg will be like jelly too.’ So I clicked my fingers and his legs went from under him!” Peter said not everyone can be hypnotised and not everyone can be perfect subjects. A person’s on-stage personality is key to getting an entertaining show. “The interesting thing about it is it’s all about people’s personalities,” he said. “You might do a show somewhere and virtually every single person on the stage is quite dull even after I’ve gone over a few routines with them. The best people are the ones with big quirky personalities. Even people who have bad tempers or are quite impatient are good subjects.” While Peter loves using his hypnotist skills for comedy and entertainment, he also on the rare occasion uses hypnosis to help people with medical conditions. Peter admits he doesn’t own his own therapy centre or practice and doesn’t take bookings for medical related work but does still receive plenty of emails asking him for such help.

“Sometimes I hear a story that’s so heartbreaking and I’m so touched by it that I just have to help somebody,” he said. “In October last year I treated a girl who was 26 and when she was 13 broke her back at school after a human pyramid she was in the middle of collapsed. She’s had 34 operations since then and is in constant pain even after taking 27 painkillers a day including morphine. “This girl was so lovely and her spirit wasn’t broken. When she came to see me she was in a sprung bed that they used to push her around [in]. I told her that if I hypnotised her I can give her some pain-free moments, but obviously she can’t remain hypnotised 24 hours a day. I said: ‘You’re not going to be painfree but I can reduce your pain’.” Peter ended up giving the girl her first pain-free moments since the accident. The girl’s mother didn’t believe it and wouldn’t even look him in the eye. “I told the girl to spend some time alone with her mum. She then admitted to her mother that she was completely pain-free and there were tears allaround,” Peter continued. “What I did was change the texture

of the pain and when I left gave her advice on how to hypnotise herself. “She used to get three hours sleep a night, now she gets seven and is going for walks and even playing table tennis! That whole experience was very, very rewarding.” Peter Powers performs his famous act live at St Marys Band Club this Saturday, March 10 at 8pm. Tickets are $35. To book or for more information call 9623 1211 or visit www. stmarysbandclub.com.au. Later this month, Peter will also be performing at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 31 at 8pm. Tickets are $37.90. To book or for more information call 1800 061 991 or visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au. Why not book a ticket to either show and experience Peter’s power!

CULTURE ON SHOW

Penrith Regional Gallery is the place to be during March and April

T

here are plenty of interesting art exhibits that are a true must see currently showcased at the Penrith Regional

Gallery. The first is ‘Hello Dollies’, which presents a range of artwork by accomplished artists who, from the 1940s until the present day, have identified with the symbolic and psychological resonance of the doll. From the portrayal of personal despair to the satirical exposé of socio-political issues, the human condition is scrutinised. This exhibition’s starting point is a painting by celebrated artist Joy Hester, whose touching interpretation of ‘Gethsemane’, a doll belonging to a childless art patron Sunday Reed, will underpin the exhibition’s focus on dolls as human substitutes and holders of desires, hopes, fears and fantasies. More than 20 artists have been chosen for the exhibition with work dating from the 1940s until the present day. One of the exhibiting artists on display is Adrienne Doig, who commissioned 10 craftswomen around the world to create a doll in her likeness dressed in a replica outfit. Relying on photographs, each doll-maker’s portrait of the artist displays a shared likeness but also reveals variations in their perception of her appearance. ‘Hello Dollies’ is a thorough exploration of the doll, which showcases artwork across diverse

mediums including a life size woollen knitted sculpture, intricate pen drawings, photography, paintings, assemblages and projection. The ‘Hello Dollies’ exhibition is open every day from 9-5pm and will run until Sunday, April 22. Entry to the exhibition is free. The second exciting exhibition happening at the Penrith Regional Gallery, which you will need to hurry up and see, is called ‘Big Spread (too much, too little, too late)’. ‘Big Spread’ is a papier-mache-furnished homescape where artist Jane Lennon’s concern for humanity’s future is lovingly disguised in layers of recycled paper. The theme is hidden in the shine of pastel colours and hinted at by the titles of the works themselves. The exhibition is a visual euphemism for a future situation that is most distressing. It is presented by the artist in good grace to focus attention on the absurdly uneven distribution of food in the world, the ecological destruction caused by the western-style diet’s demand for meat and the devastation to be found in global food-related crises, which are yet to come but definitely on the cards. The artist, Jane Lennon, has developed a unique technique to make paper strong enough to be made into durable sculptural objects and furniture. Paper was scarce and expensive back when Jane was at school in rural Queensland in the ‘50s. She remembers carefully removing labels from canned food to cut out images for school projects. 50 years on and Jane is still reusing paper for artworks, motivated by her concern of the planet. This eye-opening exhibition is only on show until this Sunday, March 11 and entry is free. For more information call 4735 1100 or visit www.penrithregionalgallery.org. FILM

READY TO PARTY?

New Todd Phillips film is unlike anything you’ve ever witnessed before

L

quickly escalates out of control. The film is presented as a home video from the perspective of an attendee who is documenting the night’s events. As a classic Todd Phillips movie, ‘Project X’ had been attracting a lot of hype, making the storyline a very tight-lipped secret before its recent release. The film is meant to look like a home video and to increase its authenticity all the characters’ names in the movie are the same as the actors’ names in real life.

Also when initially casting the film, Todd wanted completely unknown actors to play the lead roles, so he decided to create a nationwide open casting call, allowing any United States resident over the age of 18 to audition for ‘Project X’ through a website. Those auditioning were required to provide videos of themselves dancing or telling embarrassing and funny stories. Todd said the goal of the open call was to cast “unknown actors” and “real people of all ethnicity”, who would not normally be given a

chance to star in a film. ‘Project X’ has so far received generally mixed reviews from critics with most of the negative ones coming from reviewers who probably aren’t in touch with their inner teenager anymore. One positive reviewer said: “‘Project X’ isn’t just a party; it’s an experience. It will amuse, excite, sicken and exhaust you”. This film is clearly not going to win an Academy Award, but it’s doing wonders at the Australian and international box-office.

isten up all you party animals! ‘Project X’ is the latest over-the-top hit film from comedy filmmaking genius Todd Phillips. Todd’s previous handy work includes the blockbuster franchise ‘The Hangover’, as well as 2010’s ‘Due Date’ and the classics like ‘Road Trip’ and ‘Old School’ – so before you’ve even seen ‘Project X’ you just know it’s going to be good! This film is for anyone that has either attended or hosted a party so huge and out of control that they can’t remember one iota of exactly what went on. ‘Project X’ follows Thomas (Thomas Mann), Costa (Oliver Cooper) and J.B. (Jonathan Daniel Brown) – three friends who plan to gain popularity by throwing a party, a plan which
