Stephen Bisset chats with legendary Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor about their remarkable, yet controversial career and their upcoming tour in Sydney…
STILL CAUSING WAVES AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
W
hen it comes to pop icons, few are more iconic than UK powerhouse Duran Duran. Leading what was to become known as the ‘second British invasion’ with acts like Depeche Mode and Echo & The Bunnymen, Duran Duran set the world on fire with such classic tracks as ‘Girls on Film’, ‘Planet Earth’, ‘Rio’, ‘The Reflex’ and ‘Hungry Like The Wolf’ – all together selling more than 100 million albums across the globe. Now, 31 years after releasing their self-titled album, Duran Duran are returning to Australia on the back of their highly acclaimed, Mark Ronsonproduced album ‘All You Need Is Now’ – and the guys couldn’t be happier. “We’re all really looking forward to getting back down to see our fans because we all love Australia and we’ve been coming there for years, so there’s a lot of history between us,” drummer, Roger Taylor said. Roger added that Aussie punters should prepare for a bit of a musical extravaganza that will be a highly polished affair once it reaches our shores. “We started the tour about one year ago at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and then took it all around the UK before taking it to the United States twice, so by the time we get to Australia everything will be kicking along nicely. “It’s going to be a two-hour show and we’ll be playing some tracks from the new album as well as a few classics, so there’ll be something in there for everyone.” While Duran Duran’s star may have faded in the ‘90s and early 2000s, it seems that ‘All You Need Is Now’ could well propel them back to the top of the tree, thanks in part to producer-of-the-

moment, Mark Ronson. Ronson, who also provided his fair share of sonic architecture to the careers of Amy Winehouse, Adele and The Kaiser Chiefs, discovered a mutual musical sensibility with the band after they shared a bill in Paris. “There is no question that Mark understands groove and pop,” Roger said. “In a way, I guess he treated the album like a bit of an experiment – he had us use old analogue gear, so Nick (Rhodes) had to get all of his old keyboards out of storage. “We had been chasing a few different ways of making music in the past – for our last album, for example, we had Justin Timberlake and Timbaland producing and Nile Rogers before that, but I think with Mark we found something very special.” It seems Roger may be right with pundits hailing the new record as the band’s best since their blockbuster 1982 album ‘Rio’. Roger said while he always had an inkling that the band was going to be something special, he had no idea they would become such a musical juggernaut. “There was one moment, though, when I realised things were getting much bigger than we thought,” he said. “We had just been on a TV show in the UK called ‘Top of the Pops’ where we performed ‘Planet Earth’ and Nick and I were walking down the high street in Birmingham and it was like the Pied Piper – first it was two girls following us, then before long it was 20, then 30 – that’s when I knew we were on to something.” Duran Duran was so popular with men and women through the 1980s that

their music wasn’t the only thing that was catching eyes. All five members of the band were extremely photogenic and were labelled the “prettiest boys in rock” by American People magazine. Teen and music magazines in the UK latched on to their good looks quickly and the US soon followed. There was rarely a week that went by in the ‘80s that the popular magazines such as Smash Hits didn’t feature the famous fivesome. There is no doubt that Duran Duran had the sound and the look but it was also their pioneering use of the music video that helped propel them to superstardom. Iconic clips like ‘Rio’, ‘The Wild Boys’, ‘Planet Earth’ (all directed by Aussie Russell Mulcahy) portrayed the lads as well-to-do toffs sailing around the Azures with models draped lazily off their arms. However, as Roger explained, the reality was far different from the fiction. “Russell is an absolute genius,” he said. “We basically had a $12,000 budget to make a video which, in those days, meant hiring a studio and jumping around in front of a green screen. Russell had this idea to spend that money on going to Sri Lanka and driving
around in a beaten-up bus. We got quite a few clips out of that trip and, while it certainly wasn’t glamorous, the end result was.” The highly visual band, who had their racy 1983 clip for ‘Girls On Film’ banned by the BBC and censored by MTV, were up to their old tricks again recently when they were censored by MTV for the clip to their single ‘Girl Panic’. The clip features supermodels Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova, Cindy Crawford and Yasmin Le Bon at their lascivious best. “The ban didn’t really surprise me. I mean, after all the clip is pretty bloody raunchy,” Roger said. “I think it’s pretty bloody fantastic to still get that kind of reaction from MTV when we’re a bunch of 50-yearold guys. We’re not too worried about it, though. It’s all about YouTube these days anyway.”
Duran Duran will play live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Tuesday, March 27 at 7.30pm. Tickets start at $99.90 for adults. For more information and to purchase tickets call Ticketmaster on 136 100 or visit www. ticketmaster.com.au.

STILL ROCKING
Despite many years of music, 10cc has never lost its relevance
A
nother one of England’s classic rock bands is making the trip to the heart of the west tonight, March 23. 10cc are considered the missing link between everyone’s favourite band The Beatles and modern day alternative chart-toppers, The Gorillaz. 10cc ruled the pop charts in the 1970s and instead of being the centre of attention like other stars of their time, they preferred to focus on the art of turning highly sophisticated rock masterworks into simple-sounding pop hits – and did so very very well. For most of the band’s lifespan, 10cc featured two strong songwriting teams, one ‘commercial’ and one ‘artistic’, both camps combined to inject sharp wit into lyrically and musically varied songs. From their breakthrough number two hit ‘Donna’ in 1972, to their iconic 1975 worldwide smash ‘I’m Not In Love’, to their final number one ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ in 1978, 10cc stood for the kind of heightened pop sensibility achieved only by the very greatest music practitioners. In truth, they could have topped the charts in any era. 10cc would have been as at home in the
dynamic early days of pop in the 1950s, as they would have been in the digital download culture of today. Founding member and vocalist, Graham Gould, always made the point that it was all about the songs. Not the image or who the singer was or who played which instrument. This philosophy is what stood 10cc apart from all the ‘fame hungry’ acts around at that time. The band was also unique in the fact that each of the four members could sing, play an instrument and produce. One could argue that it could be somewhat damaging to a group having each member good at just about anything, but in fact it allowed more creative sessions to take place and meant their albums were diverse with each track having an individual sound. The band have achieved immense worldwide success over the years including selling more than 30 million albums, their hit ‘I’m Not In Love’ has been played more than five million times on US radio and their song ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ was featured in the 2011 Oscar nominated film ‘The Social Network’. 10cc over the years has gone on a number of ‘breaks’, as well as a number of line-up changes but one thing that hasn’t changed is their focus on playing good music and nothing else. 10cc play their greatest hits live at Rooty Hill RSL tonight, Friday, March 23 at 8pm. Tickets are $61. To book or for more information call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

FUN AT THE FESTIVAL

The Penrith CBD came alive last weekend for the Penrith Festival of Fun
T
he early morning rain did little to dampen the spirits of those searching for fun at the Penrith Festival last Saturday. Much to the disappointment of many locals, the annual festival was cancelled last year, but Penrith City Centre Manager, Gai Hawthorne, promised it would be back in 2012 – bigger and better than ever – and it was! The Festival of Fun included a grand parade, entertainment on the main stage and children’s stage, plus extra activities throughout the CBD. The Western Weekender was also there handing out papers and soaking up the fun. This year’s festival took place along High, Woodriff, Station and Riley Streets. Whilst the weather kept numbers down, a good crowd was still in attendance.
