Nathan Taylor chats with Chopper Read impersonator and all-round funny-man Heath Franklin about taking on Australia’s most high-profile criminal, as well as his upcoming show at St Marys Band Club…
MEET AUSTRALIA’S BRAVEST COMEDIAN
H
eath Franklin would have to be Australia’s bravest comedian. Why, do you ask? Well, Heath’s made a living impersonating one of Australia’s most notorious criminals – Mark ‘Chopper’ Read. Heath’s been taking on the character of Chopper Read since 2005 when he debuted it on Channel 10’s comedy skit show ‘The Ronnie Johns Half Hour’. “I got the inspiration to do the Chopper character from watching the ‘Chopper’ film with Eric Bana too many times,” Heath laughed. “Whenever anyone else was charging around at parties quoting ‘Austin Powers’, I was the weird guy quoting ‘Chopper’. “After doing it for a while my girlfriend said ‘Could you please stop impersonating Chopper at home, why don’t you do it in a show instead?’ So I wrote a sketch for it, put it in the show, ‘The Ronnie Johns Half Hour’, and the rest is history.” Mark Chopper Read is one of Australia’s most well-known criminals, who’s made a living writing crime novels about his tales in prison. Chopper’s rap sheet over the years has been fairly extensive ranging from armed robbery and firearm offences to assault and kidnapping. In 2000, Chopper had a film about his life detailed on the big screen. The film starring Eric Bana did exceptionally well at the Australian box office and catapulted Bana’s career in Hollywood. Heath said when he first started portraying Chopper at a student performance through university he never really expected the character to get as

popular as it has. “When I started out the Chopper routine I was just performing for 20 or 30 people in this dingy little university theatre and then all of a sudden it was on TV and people were commenting on it, I soon realised holy moley it’s out there now,” Heath said. But how did the real Chopper Read, who I’m sure most people would be very afraid of if you caught him offside, feel about Heath pretending to be him on stage? “Chopper didn’t have much of a problem with it from what I could gather,” Heath said. “I met him when the show (‘The Ronnie Johns Half Hour’) first came on and he was like ‘Yeah, alright, no worries, you’re obviously doing an impersonation of Eric Bana and not me’, but he has been alright with it from what I can tell.” Next month Heath’s bringing his hilarious portrayal of Chopper Read to the St Marys Band Club for the ‘A Hard Bastard’s Guide To Life’ show. “It’s been a few years since I’d done my last Chopper tour and I started getting a big catalogue of material that’s never seen the light of day,” Heath said. “This show will be a good chance to get all that material out there for a good night of stand-up and hopefully give people a rocking good time.” ‘A Hard Bastard’s Guide To Life’ is a comprehensive ‘hit list’ on how not to just survive, but thrive in a modern world that thinks it’s better than it is. With Chopper’s easy step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to punch life in the guts, take compromising photos of its wife and watch it cry as it hands over the keys to your future. “The big joke of the whole show is

no one should be taking advice from a career criminal who spent so much time in jail,” Heath laughed. “If people turned up with notepads and pens looking for proper life advice I’d be pretty surprised, but it’s really just Chopper’s take on the modern human condition where things like the internet and Facebook have started to change the way we live – as you can imagine Chopper is fairly disgruntled about it.” Heath said he loves travelling around Australia and New Zealand doing the show but would think very carefully if the real Chopper one day said, in a nice way, he’d like him to stop. “It would depend on how annoyed he was if I’d give the whole thing up,” he said. “If he was miffed and sending me an email from the next state I’d be less inclined (to stop doing it) then if he was quite angry and standing next to me.” ‘A Hard Bastard’s Guide To Life’ isn’t the only thing Heath has on his radar in the next few months. Beginning this Wednesday, May 2, Heath will be starring in a brand new ABC quiz show created and hosted by popular funny-man Andrew Denton. ‘Randling’ is billed as show where smart people can be funny and funny
people can be smart, where actual knowledge may help you but just as likely won’t. “The show has been so much fun to make,” Heath said. “‘Randling’ is best described as a word and language quiz show that’s played by comedians and entertainers. Having Andrew Denton host it and getting the chance to work with him has been absolutely incredible. “I don’t think there’s too many people who aspire to work in TV in Australia who would turn down the chance to work with Andrew Denton and I can’t wait for people to see it.” Catch Heath Franklin as Chopper Read in ‘A Hard Bastard’s Guide To Life’ at St Marys Band Club on Saturday, May 5 at 8.30pm. Tickets are $35. To book or for more information call 9623 1211 or visit www. stmarysbandclub.com.au.

PLAY WITH EMOTION Top local cast lined up for famous show at Glenbrook Community Theatre
O
ne of the world’s most incredible stories of a man with severe deformities paraded on public display will come to life when the Glenbrook Community Theatre performs ‘The Elephant Man’. Disfigured beyond belief by a disorder that defies diagnosis, John Merrick (performed by local actor Brad Teodoruk) is forced to spend his formative years being carted about London as the star attraction of a travelling freak show where relentless crowds pay tuppence to gawp and jeer at him. Although he dreams of escaping the torment of the freak-show circuit to lead a ‘normal’ life like others, John is an orphan with little hope of independent survival outside the confines of the big top and so resigns himself to life as ‘The Elephant Man’. Thankfully fate intervenes when moneyhungry ringmaster Ross turns John out onto the street where he’s discovered by famous young surgeon Frederick Treves (performed by Costa Karagounis). Dr Treves admits The Elephant Man to a London hospital for observation. There John fast becomes the urbane and witty favourite of high society, a far stretch from his former life. But will John’s dream to become a man like others ever come true?
A poignant tale of hope, courage, friendship, love and longing, The Glenbrook Players’ adaptation of Bernard Pomerance’s Tony Awardwinning play holds a valuable message about the nature of humanity and the capacity of the human spirit. In actual fact, the story of John Merrick as ‘The Elephant Man’ was true. John Merrick was an English man who began to develop abnormally during the first few years of his life. His skin appeared thick and lumpy, he developed an enlargement of his lips and a bony lump grew on his forehead. Not only was John’s face an unpretty sight but his arms and both feet became enlarged and at some point during his childhood he fell and damaged his hip, resulting in permanent lameness. The story of ‘The Elephant Man’ has not only been very successful on the theatre stage but in 1980 a feature film about the life of John Merrick hit the screens. The movie starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins was nominated for an incredible eight Academy Awards including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actor’ at the 1981 ceremony. The local production of ‘The Elephant Man’ will be held at the Glenbrook Community Theatre over the first two weekends in May on the following dates: Friday, May 4 at 8pm, Saturday, May 5 at 2pm and 8pm, Friday, May 11 at 8pm, Saturday, May 12 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets start at $22. To book or for more information call 4739 1110 or visit www.glenbrookplayers.com.au.

T
he Nepean Art Society will present its Autumn Exhibition next weekend, with approximately 130 paintings by local artists on display. Among the exhibitors is St Marys based artist, Steve Leadenham, who will be donating a framed print of one of his Sydney ferry paintings as the raffle prize at the exhibition. Born in the United Kingdom, Mr Leadenham has lived in the local area for 30 years. He specialises in transport-themed paintings including road, rail, aviation and marine subjects. His client base comprises transport enthusiasts and professionals who demand a high level of realism and technical accuracy in the artwork they commission. He paints predominantly in oils and has won a number of prizes for his work including best oil painting in the Art of Sydney Awards, 2009. Mr Leadenham has a close association with the Qantas Founders Museum at Longreach in Queensland, having provided artwork in connection with a number of the museum’s aircraft preservation projects. Prints of his paintings are available through
the Qantas Museum, as well as the Sydney Bus Museum at Leichhardt and the railway enthusiasts’ bookshop at Sydney’s Central Station. He has recently completed a commission for the Ambulance Service of NSW portraying the three helicopter types presently operated by the air ambulance service. A member of the Nepean Art Society for 10 years, Mr Leadenham enjoys the benefits of membership and the chance to meet and interact with fellow artists ranging from professionals to hobbyists encompassing a wide range of ages. The society offers members the opportunity to attend classes in all mediums, as well as workshops, demonstrations and field trips, including camping weekends. The Nepean Art Society, a not-for-profit group, aims to bring creative people together to enjoy the exchange of ideas with other artists. It has a membership of more than 125 and new members are always welcome whether beginner or practicing artist. The Nepean Art Society’s annual Autumn Exhibition will open at 7pm on Friday, May 4. It will run from 9am-5pm and 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. It will be held at the Nepean Art Society’s premises at The Cottage, 3 North Street, Penrith.
