Coming to Sydney for his first performance here in eight years, DJ Jazzy Jeff tells SHANNON COCHRANE that although the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ was a career highlight, he still hasn’t served his true purpose yet...

A

lthough Will Smith may have emerged as the most famous alumni of hit television show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, his funny sidekick DJ Jazzy Jeff has also made a successful career for himself in the rap scene.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Jeff first began dreaming of a music career after seeing a DJ working at a party.

“I went to a block party and saw how the DJ controlled everyone with the songs he played and I said ‘I want to be that guy’,” he explained.

He began building his skills, influenced by the musician Kenny Gamble, and his big break came when he had a chance meeting with a young Will Smith, who he teamed up with to create music.

The pair’s styles complemented each other well, forming the hip hop group DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince in the late 1980’s and becoming majorly successful.

They released many chart-topping songs that reflected teen culture and resonated with young Americans, including ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble’ and ‘Boom! Shake the Room’.

Many American hip hop stars in the 90’s and today created controversy by littering their songs with four lettered words and explicit, sexual themes, which made Jeff and Smith’s PG-rated music an interesting point of contrast.

Although his early songs were squeaky clean compared to some of his contemporaries, Jeff claims that he has no opposition to profanity in rap and hip hop music.

“I don’t have a problem with it. If it bothers you, don’t listen… I’m really against censorship,” Jeff said.

With five studio albums under their belt, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince were pioneers of hip hop and received two Grammy Awards, including the first ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance.

They made the transition from radio to screen when they signed on for the television show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, in which Smith played a savvy teenager sent to live at his posh uncle’s house with Jeff appearing as his funny but clueless friend.

The show combined a street smart vibe with a catchy soundtrack and clever plots that dealt with important teen issues, making it wildly popular and iconic for a whole generation who grew up in the 1990’s.

Going from a rapper to a television actor without any background in drama might seem daunting, but Jeff said he never felt uncomfortable on set.

“There were 150 people on the set while we were filming and we were used to doing shows for 30,000 so I wasn’t nervous until I found out there were five million people watching it [the show],” he said.

Despite the success of Jeff and Smith’s collaborations, the duo went in separate directions, with Jeff embarking on a solo career and forming his own production company called ‘A Touch of Jazz’, where he gets to mentor up and coming hip hop artists.

He regularly performs, and will be visiting Australia this month, playing at the Ivy Pool Club on Saturday, December 14, in an appearance that will be his first visit to Sydney in more than eight years.

People always want to do the handshake, but I can only do it with Will The concert will be a fun-fuelled party with all of Jeff’s hits and turntable acrobatics on display, with the DJ himself promising a gig that is: “high energy… we try to take people on a musical journey with all types of music so you never know what you might hear”.

Looking back at his career in the 90’s, Jeff has fond memories of working with Smith on the ‘Fresh Prince’, although hardcore fans might be disappointed that he only likes to do his character’s unforgettable special handshake with his former cast member.

“It was great working with one of your closest friends and I spoke with him [Smith] a few days ago… people always want to do the Fresh Prince handshake, but I can only do that with Will,” Jeff said.

Although he may have helped many young DJs begin their careers and will forever be remembered as a legend of 90’s hip hop, Jeff still believes he has yet to reach the highlight or peak of his career.

“I haven’t had it yet… I totally appreciate all I have done, but I think I haven’t served my true purpose yet,” Jeff said.

ADAM MADA: ILLUSIONIST MAGICIAN

T

he magic tricks that Adam Mada pulls off on stage may be seriously aweinspiring, but the magician himself has a fun, humorous stage presence that combines the best of illusionism and comedy.

The Australian magician is constantly showcasing and perfecting his craft, and performs every Saturday night at his home venue of Slide Cabaret in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

He is a founding member of the popular venue, and has performed there for the past six years, wowing spectators with his mystical, astounding close up magic and larger-than-life personality.

Mada is known as one of Australia’s most prominent and talented magicians, and has appeared in the media numerous times and toured across the country.

He showed off his skills in the Channel 9 and BBC UK series ‘The Real Hustle’, in which he exposed some of the most elaborate heiststyle scams in the world and has also worked as an illusion consultant on the film ‘Sleeping

Beauty’.

He has been chosen as a guest judge for magic panels, and passed on his skills by conducting workshops for other professional magicians.

Mada first got into magic when he was a child, and transformed his youthful dream into a reality when he attended the Jeff McBride Magic Masterclass in Las Vegas and studied with mentors from across the world.

His shows are always explosive and eventful, with Mada promising, “a hilariously good time, some very strong visual effects, some jiggery pokery, audience participation and I mean the entire audience, and definitely a few things people won’t have ever seen before”.

Performing at venues across Australia, Mada has many regular clients who love his shows, including author Tara Moss who based a character on the magician in her best-selling novel Siren.

NEW SOUND: GRUNGE TO LOVE SONGS

hile she may be most famous for her edgy, rocky sound as lead singer of The Superjesus, Sarah McLeod is set to debut a softer, more classical side with a new EP and tour.

The musician has embarked on a national tour to present the music from her EP ‘96% Love Songbook Part 1’ and will also be playing at the Tattersalls Hotel in Penrith on Friday, December 20.

McLeod first rose to fame in the 90’s as the lead singer of The Superjesus, with the band winning three ARIA awards, selling hundreds of thousands of records and becoming recognised as one of the quintessential, iconic Australian rock outfits.

Her new EP is in stark contrast to her previous alternative rock music with The Superjesus, and fans will be surprised to learn that the singer has always had an interest in writing more emotional, personal songs.

“This style of music has always been my foundation, however in the 90’s I pushed it very

firmly aside in order to focus on my ‘grunge’ phase. I never confessed to anyone that my tastes were living in the past, but now I feel I have come full circle and it’s okay or me to just write what comes naturally,” McLeod said.

The tracks on ‘96% Love Songbook Part 1’ are classic love songs featuring touching lyrics and simple chord changes.

McLeod said she was inspired by the songs she enjoyed when she was younger, including the early recordings of The Beatles and artists such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, The Ronettes and The Platters.

The EP’s lead single ‘Scouts Honour’ was premiered on Channel Seven’s ‘The Morning Show’, and fans will get to hear the rest of the songs at McLeod’s Penrith concert, which follows a nation-wide tour in November.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN IN FREE SHOW

A

concert will be held to celebrate the launch of an exciting new music agency in the Hills area, with seven very different bands set to perform.

The free gig, called ‘The #1 Get Together Show’, will be held at The Galston Club on Sunday, December 15 and will showcase seven talented local bands.

It will also mark the birth of newly formed music agency All Things Entertainment, which is run by a small yet experienced team in the Hills District and will represent artists and venues and offer a range of entertainment services.

Regardless of musical tastes, anyone can enjoy the concert, which will feature a range of genres from acoustic jazz to soul and folk and plenty of anthemic party hits to keep the energy up.

The night will be opened by the Brad and Dan Acoustic Experience, who will warm up the crowd with their instrumental renditions of modern blues, rock and jazz favourites and will

be followed by fresh new Sydney act Acoustic Autograph.

Swedish born Martin Lincke will ease the atmosphere with his talented piano skills, playing a series of classic jazz songs and contemporary hits.

Singer-songwriter Snez will demonstrate her unique musical style, playing songs from her second album ‘8 Lives Left to Lose’, which are strongly emotional and pull on the heartstrings of listeners.

Folk group The Blue Ruins are also set to perform on the night, bringing their expertise from playing at the country’s best festivals and supporting artists such as Lior, Lloyd Spiegel and Josh Pyke.

The band were also nominated for Best Blues and Roots Artist, Best Singer Songwriter and Best Pop Artist at the 2012 MusicOz awards, and are steadily rising up the ranks on the Australian folk scene.

Smooth soul tunes will be played by Ardastra, with lead singer Nakia lending her

graceful vocals to songs by Whitney Houtson, Alicia Keys and Norah Jones.

After an evening of varied music, the concert will end on a rock and roll high with five-piece party band Mothership, who specialise in classic rock, jazz, funk, pop and

soul music.

The artists will perform at Rooty Hill RSL for a special Christmas Party on Thursday, December 19 in an event that’s sure to be unforgettable.

The party will be started by young musicians Georgia Fall, who are due to release their debut album ‘Love the Hard Way’ at the 2014 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Mallee-born Paul Costa is emerging as one of Australia’s strongest country artists, with his fourth album ‘Wheels and Steel’ bearing a tough, gritty sound.

The album was mostly co-written by Costa himself, and collaborators Drew McAlister, Rod McCormack, Tamara Stewart and Allan Caswell, and features electric guitar-driven music with lyrics inspired by the beautiful landscape of rural Australia.

He will be joined by Sydney-based country

duo Baylou, made up of sisters Victoria and Barbara Baillie.

Baylou are already making a name for themselves after their debut album ‘Go To Hell & I Love You’ was released in March, with lead single ‘Target On My Heart’ reaching number 1 on the Australian Country Charts.

Before joining forces, both sisters were already successful country music artists in their own right – Victoria was the winner of the 2010 Golden Guitar for Best New Talent, while Barbara toured with artists such as Adam Harvey, Beccy Cole and Troy Cassar-Daly.

They have also spent time overseas in Nashville, USA, showcasing their work and writing with talented country songwriters including Phil Barton and Eric Paslay, as well as Trey Bruce, Jamie Paulin and Steven Lee Olsen.

Their country-pop sound has a slight rock edge, which has helped Baylou gather a strong fan base in the short nine months since their debut album was released.

eisty five-piece cover band The Frocks are proving that the fairer sex can rock out just as well as, if not better than their male counterparts.

The Sydney-based group is well-known on the pub and club circuit, and will be playing at St Marys Rugby League Club on Friday, December 13.

Made up of entertaining, spirited performers, The Frocks specialise in creating music that gets audience members up off their seats and dancing all night long, with a combination of popular funk, pop and rock covers.

The Frocks’ extensive repertoire includes all the classic party songs, ranging from the groovy disco hits of the 70’s to the bubble gum pop of the 80’s, breakdancing beats of the 90’s and the contemporary rock songs of today.

ICY TAKE ON CLASSIC FAIRYTALE

T

he classic, beloved fairytale Cinderella will be staged by the graceful, talented performers of Sydney Ice Theatre this weekend!

The theatrical skating club, which features many young locals, will be performing ‘Cinderella on Ice’ at Penrith Ice Palace on Sunday, December 15.

Sydney Ice Theatre will be putting a theatrical new twist on the age old tale of Cinderella, which has captured the imagination of centuries of young readers.

The tale of Cinderella and her struggle against the abuse and neglect of her stepfamily and ultimate triumph in securing her happy ending has been told many times on stage and in films but Sydney Ice Theatre has managed to put a new spin on it.

Their show is a modern and comedic version of the beloved story, and is sure to be a hit with kids and anyone who is young at heart.

While performing in any stage show and communicating characters’ emotions to

an audience is difficult enough, the cast of ‘Cinderella on Ice’ also show off their amazing skating skills while acting.

Sydney Ice Theatre was founded in 2005, and once upon a time held meetings in Blacktown but now train locally at Penrith Ice Palace.

They are coached by Linda Aubrecht, who has been teaching ice skating for 12 years in Sydney, Canberra and Taiwan as well as performing professionally, and appearing on the TV show ‘Skating with the Stars’.

The team at Sydney Ice Theatre is made up of skaters from across New South Wales, and has participated in national competitions and travelled overseas to France, Spain and the USA to compete.

They have competed in the last three Nations Cup events, and also recently came first in a national competition held in Canberra.

With multi-talented young performers and a fun, unique twist on an old classic, ‘Cinderella on Ice’ is a great show for the

whole family to enjoy in the lead up to the school holidays.

Along with his seductive partner in crime Sydney, Irving joins up with eccentric FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) and together they delve into the seedy, corrupt world of New Jersey’s most powerful and dangerous.

Their sting ultimately ends up reeling in a big shot mayor, who is stuck between the ploys of the criminals and police. So far, critical reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the movie has already won awards at the Hollywood Film Festival.

hen it was first released as a smartphone app, ‘Angry Birds’ had people glued to their screens and now the addictive game has combined with the Star Wars franchise for a fun new saga.

‘Angry Birds: Star Wars’ keeps the main basic function of the previous ‘Angry Birds’ games but is themed with a Star Wars setting and characters.

In a galaxy far, far away, the rebel Angry Birds need to free their world from the control of the evil Pig Empire and their nasty Imperial Pigtroopers, with players given the task of using the force to achieve justice.

The game is essentially a mixture of the two franchises, and Star Wars lovers will be pleased with the appearance of iconic planet Tatooine, Jedi powers to unlock and bonus levels that feature beloved characters R2D2 and C3PO. While the ‘Angry Birds’ format and gameplay may be familiar to most people, this version has enough extra, fresh content to keep players amused, with 20 never-before-played levels and new features specific to the console.

lassic buddy cop movies usually star smooth talking, macho men but ‘The Heat’ gives this stereotype the flick as it places Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the lead roles.

Bullock plays FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn, a conservative Yale graduate who once worked in the prestigious New York City FBI office but has been paired with street smart, rough police officer Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) in the Boston Police Department.

The duo make a hilarious odd couple, with their natures and working styles completely differing, but after a rocky start, they begin to play off their strengths and make a formidable team.

They work together on a difficult case, trying to solve a murder mystery that has plagued Boston as a serial killer is still on the loose and potentially striking again at any moment.

McCarthy is the true star of the movie with plenty of laugh-out-loud hilarious scenes, although Bullock does a fine job in supporting the comedy.

aul McCartney may forever be remembered for his role in legendary band The Beatles, but the British musician’s solo work continues to do well critically.

He is set to release his 16th studio album, ‘New’, which is his first record in six years and transforms his classic rock style with an electronic flavour.

McCartney teamed up with talented, well-known producers Giles Martin, Ethan Johns, Paul Epworth and Mark Ronson to create ‘New’ and the result is a fresh, modern sounding album that reflects McCartney’s life and image while still taking the artist in a new direction.

The title track, which is also the album’s lead single, has already been released and was received positively by critics who enjoyed its catchy, orchestral pop sound and dreamy lyrics.

UNUSUAL BLEND HAD US ASKING, WHAT IS EMANAI?

hardonnay and Viognier aren’t something you see as a blend too often on bottle-shop shelves, so when Yarra Valley growers Garry and Julie Hounsell used these two from their low-cropping and somewhat exceptional Dixon’s Creek vineyard in a 2013 Toolangi label Emanai, it had us asking: just what is Emanai?

And we got an interesting answer, for Emanai has nothing whatsoever to do with oenology, and is not even in the dictionary: it was purely created by Garry and Julie from the first two letters of the names of their children Emma, Andrew and Aimee.

It’s an equally interesting wine, made for the Hounsell’s by Franco D’Anna at Hoddles Creek Estate, with white peach and apricot suggestions to the front on the taste buds, hints of citrus, and is quite crisp and lively with somewhat tart acidity.

We found it both enjoyable on its own for a bit of luxury in the shade on a hot summer’s day, and for enjoying with (at Julie’s

suggestion) grilled whiting. And it’s nicely priced at around $20; if you can’t find it in your local outlet give Garry or Julie a ring on 03 9827 9977, or order at www.toolangi.com.

One to note: When the Clare Valley’s Tim Adams and wife Pam Goldsak visited Spain in 2002 and saw how well Tempranillo flourished there in the Rioja region, they were convinced it could do equally well back home in the Clare.

So they planted their first Tempranillo on their return, and now have some 16ha under the vine, saying their confidence has been entirely justified by the straight Tempranillo wines they make under their Tim Adams and Mr Mick labels, and a blend with Grenache under their Tim Adams The Fergus label.

“The Fergus is primarily Grenache and Tempranillo, with smaller contributions from Mataro and Shiraz,” Tim says.

“Our latest Fergus from the 2009 vintage has lifted red berry flavours and is a mouth filling wine that can be kept for up to 10 years.”

or any parent, watching a child take their first steps into kindergarten is a heartbreaking, nerve-wracking experience, which is captured in the book First Day. While it’s the little ones who are embarking off on a new adventure, more often than not, their parents are more nervous than they are – a reality that is dealt with in the book.

First Day, which is written by media personality Andrew Daddo and illustrated

by Jonathan Bentley, is a timely release with future kindergarteners attending orientation days before their first year of primary school in 2014.

With emotions running high at the school gate each year, it is not uncommon to see tearful mothers and fathers bidding their children farewell as they excitedly enter school for their first day.

In a role reversal, the children take care of the adults in First Day, reassuring them that being sent off to school is a positive experience for them.

“There’ll be new rules, new games and

even news friends. Letting us go through the school gates next year might be scary at first, but it’ll get easier every day, we promise,” one unnamed four-year-old said of the experience.

The book retells a typical first school day experience, from having a big breakfast to prepare for the exciting hours ahead, to trying on a flash new uniform and kissing parents goodbye after a pep talk.

Speaking of funny people, star of ‘Ja’mie: Private Schoolgirl’ and ‘Summer Heights High’, Chris Lilley, was in town on Sunday signing copies of his new DVD at Westfield Penrith.

The event, which was held at the Mondo precinct, attracted more than 500 people who waited in the blazing sun for hours to meet the

KHAOLAK’S BLEND OF OLD AND NEW AFTER TSUNAMI DISASTER

A

s part of her job as Leader of Guest Service at Thailand’s Sensimar Khaolak Beachfront Resort, Sirawadee ‘Ann’ Sareethongchai regularly takes guests on tours to two nearby monuments commemorating those killed in the country’s horrendous 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

It’s a day she has particularly vivid memories of; children running into the lobby of the resort she was working in at the time and asking, “where has the ocean gone?”

Then the towering wall of water about to engulf everything; taking refuge in the kitchen; watching terrified as the water started to break through the brick wall…

And finally clinging desperately in those rushing waters to a mangrove tree that eventually saved her life.

Khaolak, a 20-kilometre-long strip of towns, resorts, beautiful beaches and national parks along Thailand’s Andaman coast, 65km or so north of Phuket, was one of the worsthit areas. The official death toll is just over 4,000, but locals estimate 10,000 could have perished.

Perhaps the most graphic reminder of the power of the tsunami is provided by Police Boat 813, an ocean-going patrol vessel that was washed over a kilometre inland from

Bang Niang Beach, where it had been trying to protect a jet-skiing member of the Thai royal family who drowned in the tsunami.

PB813 is today the centre of a memorial being developed to the tsunami victims all that way inland, and well worth a visit.

More sombre and established is the Baan Nam Kem Tsunami Memorial Park in a particularly hard-hit fishing port a little further north.

Its centrepiece comprises an alley created by two walls – one a towering concrete wave, the other tiled and containing names, and sometimes pictures, of hundreds who perished.

There’s also a beautiful park and huge golden Buddha statue.

And almost 10 years on, Khaolak has recovered much of its laid-back charm and become a thriving attraction for international visitors, especially from northern Europe, who chase sun, sea and a good dose of local culture without the hustle and bustle of eversleeping Phuket.

Much of the holiday activity is oceanbased – pristine white-sand beaches, bright blue water, and easy access to world-class diving and snorkelling sites in the Similan and Surin Islands.

There are other attractions, too, including

Takuapa Old Town that’s the area’s main administrative centre and which features plenty of Sino-Portuguese architecture.

But it’s a sleepy old town best visited early in the morning or on Sundays, when the local markets are in full swing.

Other markets, such as those at Bang Niang, provide a diverse range of colourful and intriguing local produce – the freshest of seafood and vegetables, a fascinating array of ‘butcheries,’ and lots of unusual cooked delicacies.

Khaosok National Park features the world’s oldest evergreen rainforest, limestone karsts (rain-eroded cliffs and peaks à la Halong Bay) and magnificent lakes and caves.

Khaolak Lam Ru National Park has both terrestrial and marine components, and a range of wildlife you may, or may not, wish to encounter – flying lemurs, Asian bearcats, macaques, black giant squirrels, Malayan pit vipers, reticulated pythons and southern bigheaded frogs.

And there’s reasonable shopping in the many stores strung along main roads in the townships.

As in most of Thailand, there is great value to be had. Resort restaurants will obviously cost a bit more, but you can find good quality lunch or dinner offerings in street-side cafés

for no more than 120-150 bhat ($4-5). Then add $3, or sometimes less, for small bottles of icy cold Singha or Heineken beer; wine can be sometimes problematic, both in price and quality.

Accommodation is plentiful, diverse and certainly cheap by Australian standards. The quite luxurious four-star Sensimar Khaolak Beachfront Resort has low-season rates from about $130 per night for a double room, about twice that for a beachfront bungalow.

That includes breakfast and access to a range of resort activities such as zumba, yoga, dance classes, and the list goes on.

It has a beachfront restaurant, expansive swimming pools and pool bar with sunken seating.

Getting there: The nearest airport to Khaolak is Phuket, about 65 to 85 kilometres away, depending on the resort you’re staying at. Thai Airways (www.thaiairways.com.au) has flights from Australia to Bangkok and connections to Phuket all year around.

Some Khaolak resorts will provide transport to and from Phuket, otherwise a cab will charge $50 to $60.

omedian Chris Lilley has created plenty of controversy in his time with his humour that know no boundaries.

Lilley’s mockumentary series ‘We Can Be Heroes’, ‘Summer Heights High’ and ‘Angry Boys’, have had us all rolling around with laughter and feeling just a little guilty about it too.

But his recent show, ‘Ja’mie: Private School Girl’, was met with an unprecedented level of fandom and fervor.

Ja’mie Louise King is the model Hillford Girls student. As school captain of Hillford Girls, Ja’mie has dedicated herself to making sure the school experience is an enriching one for all students.

It is a story that lends itself to plenty of hysterical jokes and struck a chord with locals.

On Sunday, Lilley’s Penrith fans queued up at Westfield in the Mondo precinct to meet the mockumentary creator and have copies of ‘Ja’mie’ signed by the man, or school girl, himself. There were over 500 people in attendance and plenty of wannabe Ja’mies!
