SHANNON COCHRANE speaks to Australia’s most successful crowdfunding musician, Kate Miller-Heidke, about going independent, producing songs via the internet and her love of the Blue Mountains...

W

hile most musicians would love the support of a major record company, Kate Miller-Heidke decided to spurn her former label and turned to her fans to fund her latest album.

The Australian singer parted ways with Sony Music, who had produced her three previous albums, to create the newly released ‘O Vertigo!’, which Miller-Heidke had more creative control over.

“I felt it was time to step up and take ownership of it. I’m not really making music for mainstream commercial radio, I’m making music for my fans and I just wanted to experience complete creative freedom and not have to answer to anyone really,” she said.

She used the innovative method of crowdfunding via the website Pledge Music, which allows fans to donate funds and pledge to pre-order the album.

In return, fans who assisted or donated got the chance to receive merchandise items, fan bundles and unique experiences such as having their name printed in the album’s liner notes or being on the guest list of every MillerHeidke show for life.

While Miller-Heidke wasn’t initially sure how effective the process would be, her campaign was the most successful of any Australian artist on Pledge Music, with her target for funds reached in just three days.

“I feel enormously grateful. I suspected they [fans] would be really supportive but I didn’t expect that it would happen so quickly.

We reached our target in three days and now it’s up to over 200 per cent and I certainly didn’t expect that,” she said.

“It means that I’ve been able to make a record on the same budget as I ever had on a

major label, which is amazing.”

Now, after generously donating their money, Miller-Heidke’s fans will finally get to hear the final product when she performs at the Garden Grooves event at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden on Sunday, March 9. Two of the songs from ‘O Vertigo!’ have already been released, but the majority of the album is yet to be unveiled and the singer said she was excited to perform her new music.

“I always love playing in the Blue Mountains and this will be our first gig touring the new album, so it’s exciting, we’ll be debuting a lot of brand new, never heard before material,” she said.

The music on ‘O Vertigo!’ provides a strong contrast to her third album ‘Nightflight’, with Miller-Heidke inspired by early 90’s pop and wanting to escape from the moody sound of her previous record.

“I think what inspired me was feeling like I wanted to react against my last record, ‘Nightflight’, which was quite a dark, introspective, complex record. And I wanted to create something that was a lot more colourful and straight forward,” she said.

British musician Passenger, who wrote the chart-topping hit ‘Let Her Go’, collaborated with Miller Heidke and provided vocals for the song ‘Share Your Air’.

Rather than meeting in a recording studio, the pair embraced the digital advances in music and worked over email.

“It felt really easy, we’ve worked together before, Passenger and I, I sang on his record a few years ago so I sort of already had a sense of who he was as a musician and I could already hear his voice singing the melody in my head,” Miller-Heidke said.

I wanted to create something that was a lot more colourful Although the singer’s main focus is her self-penned music, she also has a classical and operatic background and believes her music education has helped her pop career.

“I do think it’s really shaped me as a musician definitely, and I think having a solid technical basis has really come in handy, particularly when I’ve got fairly punishing touring schedules,” the singer said.

“Just being able to stay in good vocal health night after night, I think having a good warm up and warm down routine and knowing the basics of how to breathe correctly has helped me a lot.”

She has never fully abandoned her love for theatre, and will be performing in an opera in New York later this year as well as writing

her own children’s opera with Opera Australia, which will be debuted in 2015.

So, it seems that Miller-Heidke has finally escaped from the control of the industry and can express herself freely.

“There was certainly the pressure to get to the chorus before one minute and put more hooks in and all that sort of stuff and now it’s great, I can do whatever I want to do.”

CHAMBERS’ A REGULAR AT ROOTY HILL

L

earn where country music sweetheart Kasey Chambers got her musical skills from when her father Bill brings his monthly ‘Hillbilly Jam’ to the local are for country fans.

Chambers, who has long been a veteran on the country music scene, has signed up for a once a month gig at the Fred Chubb Lounge in Rooty Hill RSL, and will be playing on Thursday, March 6.

His Hillbilly Jams are bound to become a highly anticipated event at the club, with Chambers’ musical talent, spontaneity and passion creating an atmosphere where anything could happen.

Chambers will be joined by his brilliant country band and a special guest each month, bringing a new, unpredictable element and exciting feel to each concert.

While he may be best known as the father of his ARIA Award winning daughter Kasey, Chambers is an Australian country pioneer in his own right, with his growling voice and raw

country sound creating unique music.

He draws inspiration from musicians such as Bob Dylan and John Prine, and introduced his musical family to his favourite artists from an early age.

“My kids, Nash and Kasey, grew up listening only to the music I played on cassettes or on my guitar around the campfire.

Songs of Hank Williams, the Carter Family, Johnny Cash, Jackson Browne and John Prine. I’m entirely self taught. I guess that’s why I sound like I do,” he said.

With his talent for guitar and songwriting, Chambers is considered by many to be Australia’s premier alt-country guitarist.

He has also produced albums for country musicians Catherine Britt, Audrey Auld, Bec Willis and the Dead Ringer Band and amazingly has the time to write most of the songs on his own albums and tour solo and with his family.

“What I love the best is to get out on the road and perform the songs. I still play in

Kasey’s band when she’s on the road and the gigs take us all over the world. That’s where I get many of the stories for my songs,” Chambers said.

opular all-male performance troupe Manpower Australia is heading back home to strut their stuff for adoring and swooning fans.

The troupe, which has been impressing audiences for more than 20 years now, is on tour and coming to Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 1.

ENCHANTING AUSTEN AT JOHN LEES

W

ith its exploration of the trials and tribulations of love and family, Pride and Prejudice has enchanted readers in the years since it was first written, and is set to do so again when it comes to the stage.

Jane Austen’s classic novel, which was published in 1813 and has been adapted for film many times since, will be staged by local theatre company Ruby Productions.

The first performance will be held on Saturday, March 8 at the John Lees Centre in Penrith, and will be followed by shows on Saturday, March 15 and 22.

‘Pride and Prejudice’ follows the lively, dynamic Bennet family, who have five young unmarried women living under the same roof and a mother desperate to get them to the altar.

Their lives become a flurry of excitement and romance when a wealthy young man named Bingley comes to stay at their home town of Loungbourn, inspiring love from many

of the village’s women.

While Mr Bingley is well-mannered and polite, his fellow bachelor Mr Darcy who is visiting with him is less pleasant and ends up getting off on the wrong foot with Elizabeth, the cleverest Bennet daughter.

The feisty duo end up regularly getting into arguments and verbal sparring but begin to appreciate each other’s quick wit and fall in love.

Elizabeth’s sister Jane also finds romance, growing close to Mr Bingley, and the young Lydia Bennet runs into trouble with the dashing but deceptive soldier Mr Wickham.

As the Bennet girls search for true love, they struggle as their lower social status threatens to put a halt to their relationships with the much wealthier bachelors.

The joys and pain of courtship and the unfairness of class barriers are explored in this brilliant adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Ruby Productions is a Penrith-based theatre company that celebrated its second

birthday in January, and has given young, local actors plenty of opportunities to shine on stage.

LOVERS’ TWILIGHT TWIST

T

he ‘Twilight’ films may have won over young adults with their vampire themes, but it can’t rival the dark, gothic glamour of William Shakespeare’s finest work.

Local theatre company The Acting Factory is staging an exciting, new production of the classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’, using a gothic style to bring out all the rich, violent passion of Shakespeare’s original.

The play will be performed at the scenic, historic location of Mamre House in St Marys, from Saturday, March 8.

Previews will be held on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 by the river in Regatta Park, Emu Plains.

While most people don’t associate Shakespeare with gothic fantasies, director Mitch Rist is ready to change perceptions of the famous playwright’s work and bring it to life for modern audiences.

Rist has a long history in theatre, and previously directed productions of

Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ and Michael Green’s ‘Julius and Cleopatra’.

When conceptualising the new ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Rist sought inspiration from directors such as Tim Burton and Len Wiseman, using colour and spooky kitsch imagery to create a vibrant play.

The setting and design of the production help to illustrate and deeply explore the major themes of the play: love, death, fear, romanticism and eternity.

Although Shakespeare is far removed from Twilight in the literary world, Rist believes that fans of the young adult book and film series would enjoy the romantic drama and dark themes of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

The Acting Factory was formed in 2001, and has staged 18 major productions on top of smaller shows, with their most recent offering ‘Snow White and Those Short Guys’ performed in January.

hakespeare would have had his 450th birthday this year and to celebrate, an exciting production of his classic play ‘Twelfth Night’ will be staged.

Sydney theatre company Sport for Jove will be bringing their production of ‘Twelfth Night’ to the Riverside Theatres in Parramatta this March.

Known as one of Shakespeare’s funniest romantic comedies, Twelfth Night is a timeless play that explores themes of love, loss and self-discovery.

It follows a pair of twins who get washed ashore and separated in a strange land, forced to fend for themselves in a new society as they each experience an extraordinary adventure that will change their lives forever.

The hilarious yet touching play was performed to critical acclaim last year in an outdoors production, and was praised

by Sydney Morning Herald reviewer Jason Blake, who wrote: “Ryan’s accomplished, clear and free-spirited production is the play

entire… absolute clarity of intention from its performers… typified by generosity of spirit”.

Starring talented performers Abigail Austin, Megan Drury, Anthony Gooley, Robin Goldsworthy and James Lugton, ‘Twelfth Night’ transports its audience to the beautiful coast the play is set on.

While ‘Twelfth Night’ may have been written centuries ago, its themes such as refugees, revenge, love and family will still reach out to the modern viewer. “‘Twelfth Night’ asks us, ‘What country friends is this?’. It’s a powerful question. It’s a country where refugees fight to find their families again, a place called Illyria, that bears a strangely similar sound to the name of another country I know,” director Damien Ryan said.

Sport for Jove’s beautiful production of ‘Twelfth Night’ is a must-see for HSC students studying Shakespeare, and is a perfect way to introduce audiences to the work of the most acclaimed playwright in history.

WICKED RETURNS TO LAND OF OZ

T

he beloved hit musical ‘Wicked’ is coming to Sydney this year, with its imaginative re-framing of classic tale ‘The Wizard of Oz’ bound to capture audience’s hearts.

The musical is based on the novel Wicked

by Gregory Maguire, which follows the story of the Wicked Witch of the West before she became notorious in the Land of Oz, presenting a different side to the character.

Set years before Dorothy dropped into Oz, ‘Wicked’ focuses on two very different girls who will go on to become powerful witches – the smart, fiery, green-skinned Elphaba and the beautiful, popular Glinda.

It has been wildly successful across the globe since its official Broadway debut in 2003, and now it’s coming to Sydney from Saturday, September 20 at the Capitol Theatre.

Tickets for the Sydney season go on sale on Monday, March 17 and are sure to be ordered quickly, after the Melbourne season faced an unprecedented demand by the

public.

The tenth anniversary tour of the show will star the talented Lucy Durack as Glinda and Jemma Rix as Elphaba, who are both reprising the roles that shot them to fame in the original Australian tour of ‘Wicked’.

They will be joined by Steve Danielsen as Fiyero, Maggie Kirkpatrick as Madame Morrible, Edward Grey as Boq and newcomer Emily Cascarino as Nessarose.

The Australian cast are currently performing in Manila, where they have been met with a rapturous response from audiences and critics alike, breaking all box office records for the number of tickets sold in a week.

‘Wicked’ has been Broadway’s number one show for 10 consecutive years, and has won more than 50 major awards including the Grammy Award, three Tony Awards and six Helpmann Awards including Best Musical.

The New York Times referred to ‘Wicked’ as “the defining musical of the decade”, while Time Magazine has written: “If every musical

had the brain, the heart and the courage of ‘Wicked’, Broadway really would be a magical place”.

‘Wicked’ will begin its Sydney season at

ine years ago, small independent horror film ‘Wolf Creek’ took the world by storm with its extreme violence and scary holiday-gone-wrong plotline.

Now outback serial killer Mick Taylor is returning to the big screen with a brand new set of victims waiting to become his playthings.

While the grotesque acts of violence are still as hardcore as ever, it’s unlikely that ‘Wolf Creek 2’ will shock audiences as much as the original film did, with viewers knowing what to expect this time around.

The film is about three unwitting youngsters going on a roadtrip to Wolf Creek Crater and relishing the chance to experience the real Australian outback.

Despite the last film ending with the deaths of two women, a killer on the loose and a massive police investigation into the area, it seems that the eager trio of campers in ‘Wolf Creek 2’ are blithely unaware of the danger they’re stepping into. Naturally, they fall victim to Mick Taylor’s sadistic games and have to struggle for their survival.

his violent, gory game definitely isn’t for children or anyone who’s squeamish, with all the gothic bloodshed of previous ‘Castlevania’ games.

In ‘Lords of Shadow 2’, gamers play Dracula as he is again resurrected and weakened. As the game progresses, numerous evil adversaries face off against Dracula, including Satan himself, who wants to bring about an apocalypse and seek revenge on his old enemy.

To fight the devil and save himself, Dracula has to team up with Death for an ultimate battle of evil versus slightly less evil. There’s also an appearance from the Belmont clan, from previous ‘Castlevania’ games, who trespass onto Dracula’s castle and seek his destruction.

The castle itself is a highlight of the game, with massive labyrinth-like corridors and passageways to explore, as well as brand new environments and settings.

Dracula has loads of cool powers and abilities to outsmart and ward off opponents, and can transform into

his touching and historic story gives a thoughtful perspective on race relations in America while also presenting a deeply personal

story.

In ‘The Butler’, Forest Whitaker plays the main role of Cecil Gaines, an African American man whose life changes dramatically, from humble beginnings on a cotton farm in the South to becoming a servant and eventually going on to work as a butler in the White House.

His stint as a butler to the highest office in the land lasts for an amazing three decades, giving Cecil an insight into a range of presidents and working for eight Commanders in Chief.

A string of Hollywood celebrities have stepped in for cameos as historical figures, with Robin Williams playing Dwight D. Eisenhower, James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, Live Schrieber as Lyndon B. Johnson, John Cusack as Richard Nixon and British actor Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan. Cecil faces a serious dilemma when his son joins the radical organisation, the Black Panthers, which threatens his professional life.

orrissey, ex-frontman of The Smiths, has been back in the spotlight recently with the release of his autobiography and tour, making it the perfect time to rerelease his 1992 album ‘Your Arsenal’.

The album, which was his third solo record, has been remastered and branded as the ‘definitive master’, with improved audio.

‘Your Arsenal’ was the first album that made Morrissey’s solo career skyrocket in the US and marks an important era in his discography. The two-sided album features 10 tracks, with side one having a loud, gritty rock and roll sound.

Legendary, influential guitarist and arranger Mick Ronson, who worked on Spiders From Mars, produced the album and gave it a glam rock tinge.

In contrast, side two of ‘Your Arsenal’ is more classic, yet still clever and unique with pop music that has reflective, sweet touches.

Desserts are mouth-watering, with options including lemon curd cup served with ginger gravel and vanilla cream and Jaffa style chocolate mousse.

awkesbury Herpetological Society’s Annual Reptile Show is back, with a day jam-packed with fun for the whole family.

The event, which is the fifth annual show, will be held on Sunday, March 2 in the Marquee at Penrith Panthers on Mulgoa Road. This great family day out has plenty to see and do, with live reptile shows, a reptile competition, live music from local performer Sarah Mitchell and exotic reptile displays with photo opportunities.

The reptile competition, which gives owners the chance to show off their beloved pets, will have nine categories to enter: frogs, geckos, skinks, dragons, turtles, monitors, pythons, colubrids and elapids.

Entry forms are available on the organisation’s website, and animals will be vet checked on the day. Prizes for the competition include reptile equipment items donated by gold sponsor Kong’s Australia, and plaques, medallions and certificates.

There’s also items for sale for reptile lovers to take home, including reptile caging, lighting, accessories, food and even class one and two reptiles.

If you’re curious about owning reptiles but haven’t taken the plunge yet, volunteers from the Hawkesbury Herpetological Society will be available to answer questions about how to get a licence, choosing reptiles and caring for them.

The exotic reptiles available at the photo booth include a Burmese Python, Yellow Anaconda, Green Iguana, Tegu and American Alligator, while there will also be a selection of skeletons on display including crocodile and dinosaur remains.

CORAL REEFS, ACTIVE VOLCANOES AND A TASTE OF LUXURY

he islands of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean are often overshadowed by other tropical destinations such as New Caledonia and Fiji – yet there is nothing underwhelming about this culturally rich and enchanting volcanic island nation.

A three hour flight from Sydney on Air Vanuatu will see you touch down in Port Vila (the capital of Vanuatu on Efate island) and welcomed by local women playing ukuleles.

Tourists with a penchant for relaxation and style have a range of five-star hotels and resorts to choose from, but for a truly unforgettable experience, the Warwick Le Lagon resort half an hour from the international airport is 75 acres of tropical paradise.

Le Lagon is situated on the edge of Erakor Lagoon, where on any day dozens of local children can be seen snorkeling the shallow reef waters. The charmingly friendly staff will help you navigate the lagoon with snorkeling and fish feeding tours, even sailing lessons and kayak hire.

And watersports should be on your to-do list in Vanuatu – visitors come from all over the world to swim in the tropical, warm waters that

harbour a kaleidoscopic myriad of corals and fish. Hideaway Island is home to the world’s only underwater post office (complete with waterproof postcards), but more impressive is the 80 metre wall of coral that can be snorkeled along, or for those with the skills, scuba dived. You will literally take one step off the coral shores to be amongst schools of tropical fish.

Vanuatu is still a developing nation, and a fledgling set-up that deserves a visit is the Blue Lagoon marine sanctuary on the western side of Efate. Hand feed 90-year-old sea turtles, walk through their hatcheries and enjoy the best-value seafood platter in a delightful restaurant overhanging the ocean.

Just 20 minutes further down the road is Blue Lagoon itself, a truly picturesque waterhole with turquoise waters so clear you can see the white sand two metres below the surface. An absolute must is trying the rope swing but be prepared for sore biceps the following day!

Driving around the island and visiting a local village is also an experience to treasure.

Outside of the lavish resorts, the Vanuatu

locals lead quite different lives. Largely untainted by western society, many locals live off the land; building cyclone-proof homes out of palm leaves and dried out vines, hunting wild pigs and cattle, and walking from village to village with “stick fires” in the dead of the night to meet up with friends and family. There wouldn’t be a more hardy, self-sufficient and happy bunch of people in all of the world. Be sure to wave and say hello as you pass by – some of the best memories you will take away from Vanuatu are created by the people you meet.

However, if there is one aspect of Vanuatu that you simply cannot miss during your travels, it’s Mount Yasur volcano on Tanna Island. No where else in the world can you stand on the edge of a fully active, erupting volcano and somehow walk away alive.

The twilight tour is your best option for seeing the truly violent mother nature at work.

After a 50 minute flight from Port Vila to Tanna Island on Unity Airlines, there is then a 1.5 hour drive across Tanna to the volcano.

Incredibly, while Mount Yasur is spewing black ash into the air above, the Tannese go

about their daily business. Tour guide Rex is simply a joy to travel with, and will tell you all about the customs of the people.

The volcano is surrounded by ash-plains that have smothered the vegetation; all that remains is an eerie, trembling moonscape punctured by boulders that have been hurled out of Mount Yasur.

Driven to within 150 metres of the top of the crater, a steep 15 minute walk will see you standing on what feels like the edge of the earth. Mount Yasur thunders with tremendous force, larva and rocks bubbling and exploding just 100 metres below your dangling feet.

And although every second you are fighting a basic instinct to run away as the explosions take place, Rex’s advice? Look up.

“When the volcano launches rocks up into the air, you need to know where they will land!”

As the sun sets and you trudge back down the mountain with ashen faces, there’s a sense of relief that only those who have visited Mount Yasur could understand.

ustralia’s favourite children’s band The Wiggles are bringing their colourful stage show to Penrith.

The band is currently heading out on their 2014 ‘Apples and Bananas’ Tour, which will see the quartet entertain children across Australia.

They will perform at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 15.

Kids in the audience will get to hear all their favourite songs from the new ‘Apples and Bananas’ CD and DVD including The Wiggles’ version of nursery rhymes such as ‘This Old Man’ and ‘The Wheels on the Bus’.

Parents may remember a few songs too, with The Wiggles reprising some of their old school hits including ‘Hot Potato’ and ‘Rock a Bye Your Bear’.

The Wiggles are one of the best-known children’s groups on the planet, with more than 21 years of history entertaining and educating kids behind them.

They have sold more than seven million albums, 23 million DVDs and eight million books and even won 11 ARIA Awards for the prestigious award, ‘Best Children’s Album’.

While The Wiggles were initially all-male, a

recent line-up change has brought fresh blood to the beloved band and a new female presence.

Blue Wiggle and founder Anthony remains in the band, along with Purple Wiggle Lachy, Red Wiggle Simon and the first ever female Wiggle Emma.

“I grew up listening to The Wiggles and so the songs are there in my brain. To be asked to be part of this group is a dream come true,” she said.

Young fans have also reacted positively to the change, with many coming to concerts dressed with a bow in their hair to emulate the Yellow Wiggle.

“They are the most adorable ‘army’ I’ve ever seen, they’re quite ‘bow-tiful’,” Emma said of her yellow fan club.

The four Wiggles will be joined on stage by long-time dancing companions Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus.

The Wiggles will perform at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 15 at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm.

elbourne born author Frank Coates developed a passion for Africa after joining a UN team as a technical specialist in Nairobi.

The amazing experiences he had overseas and his views on the socio-political environment of Africa fuelled his newly released novel Whisper at Dawn, which is set in the exotic continent.

“Africa changed my life completely,” Coates said.

“It fired up a passion in me to tell its many stories, and in so doing to realise an ambition to write – an ambition I had suppressed for thirty years as I raised a family and paid the mortgage.”

Set at the beginning of the 20th century, Whisper at Dawn follows Dan Sullivan as he signs up to fight the Boers but quickly discovers the horrors of war, both on the battle fields and in society.

In the beautiful environment of East Africa, wild animals roam the path where rugged landscape meets railway, providing the perfect conditions for the white hunter in search of ferocious, unknowingly dangerous game.

LITTLE DROP OF VERMENTINO NEEDS A JUG TO BE ENJOYED

A

growing band of Aussie winemakers are broadening their portfolios with an interesting white of somewhat ancient Mediterranean origin.

The Little Wine Company in the Hunter Valley have just released their first Vermentino that’s a flavoursome late ripener hailing from Liguria, Tuscany, Sardinia and Corsica.

The 2013 is a ripper drop that shows why the variety is gaining popularity here – although as owners and winemakers Ian and Suzanne Little say, the process was very daunting.

The fruit (from the old Roxburgh vineyard in the Upper Hunter) had to be picked so long after all the other whites were well off the vines, it had them looking at fruit that appeared so weather-beaten it had them wondering if they’d done the right thing.

But already intrigued with the variety after visits to Italy, they were amazed at just how fragrant the resultant juice proved to be, leaving them “happy Little winemakers”.

It’s a rewarding drop with citrus, herb and

mineral flavours – but be warned there are three things you need to bear in mind: never think of the cellar, small glasses or petite sips with this one. Instead buy it, chill it, pour it into a big glass, and relish it by the mouthful.

And on the table match it with deep-fried calamari or roast pork. Excellent value at $26.

One to note: Another Hunter Valley maker, the Scarborough Wine Company has released a 2011 Black Label Shiraz that’s rich with classic Hunter red berry flavours, pepper, spice and identifiable but not over-the-top tannins.

A very stylish wine, it also reflects the fact it’s one made from wonderfully-flavoured fruit off mature vines, giving it what its makers note is its rewardingly “seductive, savoury style”.

Pay $29 and enjoy with hearty-flavoured Sunday roasts (lamb, pork or beef) or game bird dishes; and don’t hesitate to think about an extra bottle or so to put in the cellar for rewarding development and enjoyment over the next five to eight years.
