SHANNON COCHRANE discovers the two sides of Rodney Rude, and how political correctness is fuelling the resurgence of bawdy and borderline offensive comedy...
T
o his many fans, Rodney Rude is known for his hilariously bawdy, borderline offensive jokes but off-stage the comedian is an entirely different person. While his stand-up routines are littered with every four letter word imaginable, and based around the cruder aspects of human behaviour, Rude said that his family has never been shocked by his performances and understand that his stage persona is just an act. “Everybody’s been able to put it in its department... I’ve never been rude in real life, I’m not a swearing person or anything, it’s just an act, it’s from 8 until 10 at night and that’s the end of it, so my family and the kids know it’s just a part of what I do,” Rude said. The legendary comic will be bringing his stage show to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, October 4, where audiences can expect his classic, boisterous and rude humour. Rude has become one of Australia’s most renowned and infamous comedians, and has been honing his performing skills ever since he was a little boy. His first ever moment in the spotlight came when he was just eight-years-old, when he sang a song on the local radio dedicated to his mother. “I think that was the first and everybody liked it and they all clapped and everything... I think that gave me the taste so when I was in my teens, I went away on the showgrounds with the carnivals... I worked in the tent shows and started to change the words of songs,” he explained. From those humble beginnings, Rude went overseas, working in America and Canada for

almost 15 years before returning to Australia and finding success, achieving a number one album without having any radio airplay. Rude’s funny diatribes have won over his audiences, but they also got him into a lot of trouble in the 1980’s, when he was arrested by police in Queensland for the content of his show and also faced censorship in Western Australia. He chose to take the charges to court, and after a long legal battle was eventually exonerated. Despite the expense and time it took, Rude said he does not regret his decision to challenge the arrest and believed it was a matter of defending freedom of speech. “For the police and all those magistrates to think that using swear words was worse than some of the content you saw on the screen of crime and the constant shooting and that all the time, I didn’t get it and that’s why I just got really angry about it, it just about sent me broke, it took years but I ended up getting satisfaction,” he said. Over the years that Rude has been in show business, society has changed greatly with less tolerance for potentially offensive humour but surprisingly, the comedian thinks that the rise of political correctness has helped his routines. “Political correctness for me has been a great bonus, it’s created a platform for me to really go hard... the more politically correct it gets, the better the form for the jokes and it’s just really good... I think I’m just a really lucky person that’s been able to hold onto that attitude for a long time,” he said. After a highly successful career in comedy, Rude ‘retired’ in 2006 to take care of his

It just about sent me broke, but I ended up getting satisfaction mother, who unfortunately passed away six months ago. He decided to return to the stage on the suggestion of his father. But blink and you might miss him, because Rude has suggested that this year’s tour may be his last ever. “I know everybody says it and who knows, I might not be able to stay away from it, but I’m guessing this is the last tour,” he said. If and when he retires for good, Rude won’t stop releasing his creativity and instead said he will always be writing in some form and hopes to focus on poetry, short stories and songs. “Writing and poetry and all the songs I’ve written, I’d like to sing those, a lot of that was
motivated by my mother too, she’d just ask me for poems,” he said. “It’d be funny if they [fans] bought an album or something and there was nothing rude on it at all, they might be annoyed, who knows.”

fter being forced into an early retirement, Rod Gregory fended off boredom by pursuing his dream of being on stage. The grandfather first debuted his comedic talent on the hit television show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, and has since become a household name, touring the country with his hilarious stand-up routines. Gregory will be performing at Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, October 5, with his show set to have audiences in stitches as he displays his one-of-a-kind humour. His risqué jokes and down-to-earth stage presence give Gregory a universal quality that means his shows are enjoyed and appreciated by a diverse range of people. And despite Gregory’s self-confessed status as a joker, his formidable spirit and motivated attitude are inspirational – his shows bring a bit of country charm to the suburbs, much to the adoration of audiences. Prior to achieving fame and success on
‘Australia’s Got Talent’, Gregory spent most of his years leading the humble lifestyle of a country farmer until he was afflicted with a severe back injury. He reluctantly went into early retirement, but Gregory quickly became bored and listless with his life and decided to fill his time by writing stories about his experiences. This sparked a creative flame for Gregory, who went on to undertake a comedy course and began performing for others, pursuing his passion by working as a comedian. When he first attended the auditions for ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, Gregory only hoped to appear on national TV for a few minutes but, to his shock, he was a hit with audiences and finished in fourth position in the show’s grand finale in 2011. The exposure from being on television has helped Gregory’s career blossom, with the comedian since releasing a CD and travelling Australia on tour. His hilarious yet touching stand-up

WRITERS TELL THEIR OWN TALE
E
xplore the troubling issue of youth violence in the Philippines with the new documentary theatre play ‘Kids Killing Kids’. This gritty, realistic play will be showing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Thursday, October 17 to Saturday, October 19. Written by talented young playwrights David Finnigan, Sam Burns-Warr, Georgie McAuley and Jordan Prosser, ‘Kids Killing Kids’ was inspired by the writers’ experiences of being involved with the highly controversial cult-theatre event ‘Battalia Royale’. The writers had been commissioned to go to Manila to collaborate with experimental theatre company The Sipat Lawin Ensemble on a theatre adaptation of Koushun Takami’s controversial Japanese teensploitation pulp thriller ‘Battle Royale’. Their work, ‘Battalia Royale’, premiered in March 2012 and garnered an unexpectedly large audience and a fiery response to the
show, with packed-out performances and plenty of positive feedback. There was also a strong backlash against ‘Battalia Royale’, with critics condemning its violent content and members of the UN’s Subcommittee for the Victims of Torture even seeking to shut down the play for “merchandising brutality”. After all the fanfare and interest in ‘Battalia Royale’, media outlets began quizzing the cast and creators about whether the ‘kids-killingkids’ craze had been taken too far and if it was irresponsible for the writers to glorify violence in a country where teenagers face civil war and gang violence daily. Now, a year after their infamous production, Finnigan, Burns-Warr, McAuley and Prosser have reunited to examine the surreal events and understand why ‘Battalia Royale’ triggered such a strong reaction. They use interviews, stories and footage to examine the socio-cultural environment of the Philippines, the Pinoy people and the ‘Battalia

arch 2014 will kick off with a loud and DJ fueled bang as the Future Music Festival (FMF) hits Sydney early next year. The FMF is coming to the Royal Randwick Racecourse on March 8, bringing with it some of the leading names in electro house, DJ and hip-hop. The FMF claim it will be the biggest and most spectacular line up in Sydney concert history. Huge stars will be showing off their electronic dance music talent as well as some new artists. Leading the many house talents is DJ icon Deadmau5, who proclaims his work as a “technological orgy” and that his show is more than just a DJ set, it’s an experience. Joining him on the big stage is world renowned hiphop artist Macklemore, who decked the charts with 725 million viewers on YouTube, topping Triple J’s and Billboards Hottest 100 with his hit singles ‘Thrift Shop’ and ‘Can’t hold us’. Also sharing the FMF stage will be Australia’s own, Knife Party, who is set to
perform their own signature Haunted House arena production, an “energetic and aweinspiring” performance that will take fans to chilling new heights. Their dubstep claims to have wrecked the stage with epic base drops worldwide, and they don’t want their Aussie fans missing seeing them tear it up on home turf. Not only does the festival include the big stars but also the rising ones as well, with new electronic dance music talent set to perform and breakout next to the big names. ailing from New Zealand, seven-piece band Katchafire are creating some of the finest roots reggae of our time. The band, who initially started off as a Bob Marley tribute show, have recently released their album ‘Best So Far’ and are going on tour to celebrate, performing at Penrith Panthers on Wednesday, October 16. From humble beginnings as a family-based band made of lead guitarist Grenville Bell and his sons – vocalist Logan Bell and drummer Jordan Bell – Katchafire has grown to become one of the most popular reggae bands with an international reputation. Fresh from the success of their sold out tour of the United States, Europe and the UK, Katchafire are bringing their reggae beats and feel good atmosphere to Australia. DENHAM PLAYS THE FITZROY
J
ayne Denham is quickly building a reputation for being Australia’s country rock princess, but despite her image she has also proven her versatility. Denham, who has become a rising figure in the Australian country music industry, will perform at the Fitzroy Hotel in Windsor on Saturday, October 5. Her most recent release ‘Renegade’ was officially launched earlier this year, to positive reception from both fans and critics. The album sticks to Denham’s strong country-rock roots but also features elements from different genres, with the lead single ‘Shelter’ surprising her fans with its slow and melodic sound. “I wasn’t sure how they’d react to me bringing out something really different but I thought, ‘well hey, the album’s called Renegade, if you’re going to go renegade why not start with something they’re not expecting’, which was a bit cheeky but that’s the whole idea of the album really,” Denham said.
Despite her initial fears that the ballad might not strike a chord with listeners who are used to her rockier repertoire, Denham said her fan base enjoyed hearing a new style from the singer. “I’ve got to admit, I’ve got the most incredible reaction from people just saying how it was so nice to hear me sing a different style and I’ve had eight singles out on radio previously and eight video clips and they were pretty much country rock so this shows another side of what I do,” she said. The album follows Denham’s previous records ‘Sudden Change in the Weather’ and ‘Shake This Town’. Denham comes from a family of music lovers and first began performing when she was just five-years-old. She then progressed onto playing in bands and touring around Europe and America as a backing singer before coming back to Australia and penning her own country songs. Since then, Denham has scored a contract
with a major record label and collaborated with major industry names such as award-winning producer Garth Porter and pop star Shannon Noll. “The sound of country music has changed

FIT AND FUN: FESTIVAL OF THE BICYCLE

ycling is one of the most fun ways to get fit, and now it will be even more entertaining with the Festival of Cycling. This year’s festival is shaping up to be the biggest to date, and will be held at Sydney Olympic Park, with activities and events starting on Saturday, September 28 and finishing on Sunday, November 17. Jam packed with action and entertainment, the Festival of Cycling will have featured events and activities for everyone to enjoy, all in the name of fitness and charity. There will be 11 spectacular headline events, including the first ever Bicycle and Lifestyle Show and the Spring Cycle, making Sydney Olympic Park the city’s ultimate destination for cyclists. On top of the great activities, Sydney Olympic Park also boasts 35 kilometres of free cycling tracks and some of Australia’s best sporting facilities for residents to use and enjoy.
The festival will also be a chance to support charity, with the 2013 Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer to be held over two days, starting on Saturday, October 12 to raise money for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Adventurous bikers will enjoy the Urban Obstacle Challenge, an event that is open to individuals and groups aged 14 years and over that involves a 5km course with 10 obstacles that will make competitors work their hardest to run, push, pull, lift and climb until they reach the finish line. The newly established Bike and Lifestyle Show, sponsored by Cycling Australia and SBS, will be heaven for cyclists with a broad range of products and services on offer including sports gear and lifestyle accessories. If you love a bit of good spirited competition, then the inaugural Duathlon is the perfect activity, while more experienced cyclists can try their luck at winning cash and glory in the Tom Kerr Cycling Criterium

he NBA video game franchise returns this week, with all new players, setup, and features for ‘NBA 2K14’. The NBA drew much popularity and claimed more than 38 ‘Best sports game of the year’ awards when it officially began its ‘2K’ franchise last year. COULD THE TEMPRANILLO BE OUR NEXT BOOM WINE? by David Ellis
A
few years ago Tempranillo was little known in Australia, but in just the last few years plantings of the vine have doubled and indications are that they’ll double again. Spain’s most famous wine, Tempranillo is an easy drinking red that goes well with warm-weather outdoor dining, so now is the time to start thinking about it for the coming months. The Clare Valley’s Tim Adams and his wife Pam Goldsack are amongst Australia’s greatest enthusiasts of the variety, Tim pointing out the similarity in climate between the variety’s homeland in Rioja and La Mancha, and the Clare. “They’re all Mediterranean in climate, with hot, dry summers and cool-to-cold winters. And like Rioja and La Mancha, Clare is continental rather than maritime, and we are similarly around 500 metres in elevation,” he said. His Mr Mick label Tempranillo is an easydrinking style with juicy, rich cherry, plum and
strawberry fruit flavours and a nice velvety finish. At just $15 it’s a great-value drop too, especially to pair with (naturally) a Spanish seafood paella outdoors on a sunny day, or with simple ham croquettes. One to note: 30-year-old Hunter Valley vines gave Andrew Margan marvellous fruit for his 2012 White Label Chardonnay, and by picking that fruit while still at lower sugar levels it’s given the resultant wines leaner structure and nice citrus overtones. This is a wine that’s all about lovely forward stone-fruit flavours with those citrus overtones and a flint-like complexity to it. Certainly one to enjoy now with barbecued Tasmanian salmon or barbecued pork chops with an apple compote. And at $35 and showing all the signs of maturing nicely over the next five years, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to enjoy a bottle now and put a couple away to enjoy with a bit more maturity to them around 2017/18 – when doubtless you won’t find it on the shelves.

he new hosts of Chanel Ten’s upcoming breakfast show ‘Wake Up’ aren’t too worried about their longstanding competition on the other networks, instead the trio want to focus on making the best TV possible for their viewers. Natasha Exelby, James Mathison and Natarsha Belling are currently on a whirlwind Australian adventure hopping from town to town in their big red ‘Wake Up’ bus to find out what real Australians want in a breakfast show. “This new show is about finding out what our audience wants and I think certain markets are forgotten,” Belling told FYI. “We’ve had some fantastic feedback but one of the main messages people have

Another exciting initiative the show is introducing to viewers is localised news bulletins in each state, something which is common overseas but very unique in the Australian breakfast TV arena. “Often you’ll watch the national news and there’ll be a shooting out west but if you’re living in Queensland that’s not really relevant to you. Similarly if there’s a storm in Queensland you don’t really care in Penrith, so I think that will be a major difference,” Exelby said. While Belling and Exelby have been longstayers on Ten’s various news bulletins over the years their male co-host in Mathison has joined the team with a very different television upbringing behind him. Mathison’s claim to fame was co-hosting ‘Australian Idol’ from 2003 to 2008 before quitting the hit show to work on fellow Channel Ten series ‘The Project’. “I don’t know if I’m fully prepared to work in news but the beauty is I’m working alongside two excellent journalists who can fill in any gaps I might have,” Mathison said. “I think not being of a news background, my approach to interviews will be different, so I think we’ll compliment each other really well.” Interestingly ‘Wake Up’ isn’t the first time Channel Ten has entered into the breakfast television market. In February 2012 the network launched the short-lived ‘Breakfast’, which ran for 10 months before getting the chop after poor

PLENTY TO REMIND YOU OF INFAMOUS AUTHOR IN SAN JUAN by David Ellis
A
merican actor Johnny Depp gave new meaning to “going out with a bang” when he organised the scattering of the ashes of his author-friend Hunter S Thompson on the writer’s Owl Farm in Colorado in 2005. No solemn casting of the ashes into the wind by grieving family or friends, no dropping amid basket-loads of flowers from a hovering helicopter… Depp instead had them scattered far more spectacularly – with a thunderous bang from a canon mounted atop a near-50m high tower built specially for the job. And for good measure to ensure they’d journey even further than the canon could fire, he had a kilo or so of fireworks mixed in with them. It was a fitting end for the fire-brand writer who gave the world “Gonzo journalism” (a style of writing where the author becomes part of the story itself) and whose life was an almost stand-alone chapter in survival on drugs and booze… even Thompson himself once writing: “I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone – but they’ve always worked
for me.” We were reminded of all this when we mentioned to a travel-writing colleague our plans to visit San Juan in Puerto Rico next April, and he pointed out that it was actually in San Juan that Hunter S Thompson had launched into the world of journalism – albeit with not quite the same impact as he’d departed it. Working as a copy-boy with Time Magazine in New York City in the late 1950s, Thompson had aspirations of working up to a writer’s position, but was instead sacked for insubordination. So he headed south to the sunny Caribbean where he scored a junior reporter’s position with the El Sportivo newspaper that went belly-up just weeks later. Thompson then talked his way into a job as a contributor to the New York Herald Tribune, while at the same time writing a novel called The Rum Diary that wasn’t published until nearly 40 years later and well after he’d become famous. It was a thinly disguised autobiography of his almost-maniacal time in a then tawdry and
down-market San Juan where he’d spent most of his time fuelled by rot-gut rum. But as we know he went on to become one of the world’s best-known counter-culture authors and newspaper contributors. In the late 1990s, however, he began retreating more and more into despondency over his health, which he did nothing to help with his mainstay diet of booze and drugs; on February 20, 2005 he put a gun to his head in his farm’s kitchen and ended his tortured life. Exactly six months later to the day his ashes were scattered across the farm as he had requested, with firm friend Johnny Depp orchestrating the job (Depp had played the part of Thompson in the movie version of Thompson’s book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.) Over 250 high-ranking politicians, film stars, entertainers and other VIP guests attended the private event – with an army of security guards keeping at bay hundreds of Thompson followers and devotees camped on the hills overlooking the farm after the bizarre ash-scattering scheme had leaked out.
When we told our colleague of our planned visit to San Juan he suggested we search out the El Batey bar on which Hunter S Thompson is said to have based the seedy Al’s Backyard in The Rum Diary. And for good measure, by comparison we drop into the El Convento hotel just up the road whose simple, unadorned façade belies the fact that it is one of the world’s grandest hostelries – and most certainly not likely to have been a Thompson haunt. Originally built in 1653 as a Carmelite convent, it closed 110 years ago after proving too costly to maintain, and over the next 40 years struggled through life as a retail store, dance hall, dosshouse for the homeless, and ultimately a garage for garbage trucks. Then in the 1960s retail heir Robert Frederic Woolworth saw it, liked it, bought it and converted it into a lavish 100-room 5-star hotel for the rich and famous visiting San Juan. Cold beers at El Batey, followed by cocktails at the El Convento, certainly sound to us like the makings for a good yarn come next April...

uthor Mandy Retzlaff tells the astonishing story of her family history, where they fled from their home in Zimbabwe and had to rely on each other and their animals to survive. The book, One Hundred and Four Horses, charts the journey of the Retzlaff family after they are exiled from their family house during the upheaval and chaos of the Zimbabwean Civil War and their struggle to find somewhere to live. On an early summer morning in 2001, Mandy Retzlaff received the phone call that she and her family had been dreading. Her farmhouse in northern Zimbabwe was being decimated at the hands of an angry mob of Robert Mugabe’s war veterans, who had been tasked with driving white farmers from their homes. In just a few short days, forty-five of Mandy’s neighbours narrowly escaped with their lives and decided to leave Zimbabwe behind. With bloodshed and land invasions becoming more common, the Retzlaffs travel across Zimbabwe and are faced with a string of evictions but work hard to save the beloved horses that live on their land. They promise their neighbours, who flee to New Zealand, to take care of their horses and end up making similar pledges to other farmers and friends they meet throughout
their journey. Despite not knowing clearly whether or not they will have the means to feed or save them, the Retzlaffs end up gathering a herd of more than 300 animals but, facing difficulty on their journey to freedom and safety, they can ultimately only take 104. While the family rescues the horses, they are also in turn saved by the gentle animals with whom they make a connection, learning the different personalities and backgrounds of each one – from Grey, the silver gelding who leads the herd, to Brutus the wild colt and Princess, the moody mare, the Retzlaffs forge a deep human-animal bond. Mandy Retzlaff was raised in Ghana and moved to Zimbabwe, which was then known as Rhodesia, where she married her husband Patrick and began farming. The couple were forced to give over their farm to the Zimbabwe War Veterans Association in 2000, and fled to Mozambique where they now operate a horse safari company and share the joy of riding horses in the beautiful wild country. One Hundred and Four Horses is the story of an idyllic existence torn apart, and a story of incredible bonds—a love of the land, the strength of a family, and the connection between man and the most majestic of animals, the horse. he Peachtree hotel is one of the busiest places in Penrith on a Friday or Saturday night, with the young and the young at heart dancing along to new tunes and enjoying a meal and a beverage.
