AN EXPO FULL OF ADVENTURE

T

he Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show and Tinnie and Tackle Expo has something for everyone, with a huge line-up of special guests and entertainment planned for the 2013 extravaganza.

The Show, which is held at the Western Sydney International Dragway in Eastern Creek, is an event for anyone who enjoys being outdoors.

Exhibits cover a range of outdoor lifestyle pursuits, with displays of new 4WDs, 4WD accessories, camper trailers and camping gear, boats and fishing gear, and more.

In addition to trade displays, the Show provides non-stop entertainment and attractions – and this year will include the opportunity to hear from some of Australia’s most entertaining presenters!

Show Director Peter Woods said he was happy to have Paul Worsteling coming back to the Show this year.

“Paul Worsteling is arguably one of the most recognisable faces in recreational fishing in Australia with an unmistakable passion, enthusiasm for the sport and laugh,” Peter said.

“Paul’s passion is family, friends, fishing and fun. We are thrilled to have him at the Show this year and know he will inspire many fishermen and would-be fishermen and women to get out there and have go.

“He loves a chat, so make sure you come down and say g’day!”

Paul stars in the popular TV program ‘IFISH’ which is the show for anyone who is passionate about fishing.

Paul hosts the show with many guests and travels the globe bringing the latest in tips, techniques and products to his Aussie viewers and fans.

‘IFISH’ is about putting an entertaining spin on a favourite family pastime and hopefully teaching the viewer something in the

process.

Peter said another big Aussie legend making his first appearance ever at the Show was Merv Hughes.

“Aside from being one of Australia’s most recognisable and loved cricket identities, Merv also has an enormous passion for fishing,” Peter said.

“A lot of people may not know that about

him, but Merv released his first book in 2006, Caught in the Deep. Merv will be on stage across the weekend telling his stories,” he said.

By his own admission, Merv is a long way short of being an expert angler, but as he explains with his mixture of humour, anecdotes and a little input from his more experienced fisho mates, you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy fi shing.

Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show Feature

Another first timer at the Sydney Show is adventurer and fishing presenter Al McGlashan.

A mad keen adventurer, Al’s love of fishing ultimately steered him into a career as a fishing journalist and presenter. A decade later he is now Australia’s biggest fishing profile and, according to Al, never has to work a day in his life because he loves what he is doing!

Al divides his time between fisheries research, visiting schools and as a government advisor promoting sustainable fishing. Fearless Al has caught crocodiles, swam with and hand fed sharks and swam with marlin all in the name of science and to get the best footage for his TV program ‘Big Fish Small Boat’.

Also for the first time at the Show, Jason Andrews from All4Adventure will take time out

from wrestling crocs and travelling the country to be on stage and share a story!

Other special guests include one of Australia’s most recognisable TV personalities – Ernie Dingo.

Ernie has a story or two to share about his travels across Australia, and will also help out on the Engel Bush Camp stage presenting camp oven cooking demonstrations.

Plus this year Hodgie the Barefoot Fisherman will be at the Show. One of Australia’s best in trick casting, Hodgie is always a hit with crowds and will be speaking on stage across the weekend.

SCHNEIDER LEAVES HOLLYWOOD FOR SYDNEY

Hollywood superstar, Rob Schneider, tells SHANNON COCHRANE why he hasn’t worked with Adam Sandler recently and what it is really like behind the scenes of blockbuster comedies...

O

nce upon a time, Rob Schneider seemed destined to be forever known as Adam Sandler’s sidekick but now the comedian has taken centre stage, directing his own movies and performing stand-up to packed theatres.

While most people are familiar with Schneider’s television and film roles, he actually began his career on the stand-up circuit in San Francisco but took a hiatus from the stage for more than a decade.

He returned to live performance a few years ago, triggered by the boredom he experienced on movie sets and a little encouragement from his good friend Chris Rock.

“Sitting in my trailer on a movie for three months and eating out of Styrofoam boxes; everybody’s thinking how glamorous it was, but I wanted to do something more fun,” Schneider said of his decision to return to the stage.

“I said, ‘but what do I talk about, Chris?’ and he said, ‘just talk about what you’re talking about with me’, so that’s what I’ve been doing for the past three years.”

Australian fans will get the opportunity to witness Schneider’s routines live when he performs at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, October 19 as part of the Just for Laughs Festival.

“I feel very honoured to be performing in one of the most iconic theatres in the world, the Sydney Opera House, very excited and honoured and looking forward to being there,” he said.

“There’s not a lot of things better than that in life, to make a room of a thousand people laugh really hard, that’s pretty exciting, I recommend it to anybody.”

A class clown during his school years, Schneider turned his antics into a job and eventually reached the mecca of American comedy – Saturday Night Live.

He started as a writer but was quickly promoted to a fully fledged cast member, getting his first taste of the spotlight.

“It was intense because people knew the stakes were very high, if you became successful there you got to make movies – and then you get to go in restaurants and cut in front of people and not have to wait, you get to fly in first class or in private jets and you get to make movies and models want to go out with you,” he joked.

Schneider transitioned to movie making and early in his acting career, famously played quirky, hilarious characters in Adam Sandler films such as ‘The Waterboy’, ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Little Nicky’ but the duo have not collaborated much recently.

“I love Adam, I hope our relationship’s not getting stale, that’s why I don’t want to make movies with him for a while… I want to make a movie with him in a couple of years when it’s fresh again,” he explained.

Schneider then took the lead role in comedy hits including ‘Deuce Bigalow’ and ‘The Hot Chick’, which he considers to be near-perfect.

“That’s a good movie, that holds up. Little girls to this day come up to me and know that movie verbatim, now they’re about 20 but they love that movie, it’s a sweet little movie,” he

I want to make a movie with him in a couple of years when it’s fresh again said.

Despite the commercial success of his film, Schneider became increasingly frustrated with the interference from studios and decided to get behind the camera, releasing his directorial debut ‘Big Stan’ in 2008.

“I got sick and tired of directors who had their own particular egotistical vision of stuff that I wrote and I got sick of working with them and I said, I’m just going to do this on my own… I get sick of the studios telling me, you get a director because he knows more. And I’m like, I’m sorry, I don’t think they do, not for my material,” he said.

Schneider enjoyed his stint as a director so much that he plans to do it again in the future, although in the meantime he has

more pressing priorities – his baby daughter Miranda, who will be flying out to Sydney with him this month.

“I’ve lost about 60 per cent of my normal sleep… but she’s the most beautiful thing ever, she’s just gorgeous and sweet… she’s been the focus of our whole world and I couldn’t think of something better to focus on,” he said.

COUNTRY DUO RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS

W

ith their great country-rock music and spirited stage presence, McAlister Kemp are always crowd favourites.

The award-winning band will return to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, October 25 along with the Adam Eckersley Band for a night of country music.

Made up of musicians Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp, the band has shot to success and is steadily becoming one of Australia’s biggest country music acts with their second album ‘Country Proud’ reaching number 1 on the ARIA Country Album sales charts and number 18 on the mainstream album chart.

They also received an ARIA nomination for Best Country Album, and the record’s title song ‘Country Proud’ was chosen to be the theme song for the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

According to Blue Mountains resident Drew McAlister, the secret to the band’s success is writing music that country fans can

relate to.

“The thing we set out to do when we first started this was write real songs for real people and that’s not something that we’ve wavered from,” he said.

Their songs have been major hits in the Aussie country music scene, with popular tunes including ‘All Kinds of Tough’, ‘Hard Work’ and ‘Hell Yeah’.

He said that he and Troy Kemp often enjoyed the enthusiasm and energy of audiences that come to watch their gigs, especially when they sing along to the lyrics.

“It’s just a buzz, it’s like no other drug you ever know… it never gets old.”

Lucky fans also often get the chance to interact with the duo, who have a reputation for going backstage after their concerts and chatting to fans and posing for photos.

“Without the fans, we got nothing, we don’t have a career without them, that’s the reality of it,” McAlister said.

They will be joined on stage by the Adam

Eckersley Band, who this year released two new singles – ‘Long Enough To Disappear’ and ‘Should’ve Known Better’.

Headed up by country musician Adam Eckersley, the band’s music is unique, alternative country-rock that perfectly

complements the sound of McAlister Kemp.

e’s known as Penrith’s Pavarotti, but powerful tenor Lorenzo Rositano is heading off to Italy to make his name on the European opera scene.

To honour this talented local performer and wish him well before his trip, the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is holding a special farewell concert, ‘Penrith’s Pavarotti and Friends’, on Sunday, October 20.

The charismatic and acclaimed singer will be performing alongside some talented guests including soprano Alice Girle, baritone Paul Smith, violinist Harry Ward and accompanist Julia de Plater.

Audiences will be treated to a stunning repertoire of popular songs and arias from opera, operetta, musical theatre and popera including ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Anything You Can Do’, ‘Nessun Dorma’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

The concert will feature special highlights such as ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ from ‘South Pacific’ and popular songs from ‘La Boheme’ and ‘Les Miserables’.

At the young age of 25-years-old, Lorenzo Rositano is one of the most accomplished and feted tenors in the country.

Rositano shot to national fame back in 2006 when he was chosen by the Australian Olympic Committee to sing the national anthem at the Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

He was also involved with Schools Spectacular, where he appeared for four consecutive years, and was invited in 2008 as a special guest to sing the aria ‘Nessun Dorma’ from Giacomo Puccini’s ‘Turandot’.

His early traning was undertaken in Penrith at the Conservatorium of Music at The Joan, and he has since completed an Advanced Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and studied a Master of Music Studies in Opera.

The Western Weekender in conjunction with The Bean Doctor ran their first annual Mighty Fine Coffee Awards in FYI, and local coffee connoisseurs jumped at the chance to have their say.

The competition ran over a six week period, with 17 coffee shops in the Penrith LGA area competing for Penrith’s top prize.

Customers who voted went into the draw to win the Magister Stella Pro Coffee Machine donated by Nathan Turner from The Bean Doctor.

So, to the question on everyone’s lips, “who has the best coffee in town?”

Voting was fierce and close, however Café Lattetude in Jamisontown were crowned competition winners for 2013.

Mustafa Gazi, owner of Café Lattetude and his staff were very excited to have won, although Mr Gazi had no doubt that his café would take home the top prize!

rom the moment it was announced that director Oliver Hirschbiegel was set to turn beloved Princess Diana’s life into a film, the project was destined to be controversial.

Now, the final result has been released and while the critical reaction to ‘Diana’ hasn’t been spectacular, it’s ultimately up to audiences to decide what they think of this biopic.

Starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana, the film focuses in depth on the final two years of her life, which were marred by chaos and transition as she coped with a divorce from Prince Charles and perpetually being in the spotlight.

Delving into her love life, the audience gets a glimpse into Princess Diana’s romances with surgeon Hasnat Khan and rich playboy Dodi Fayed as well as her unexpected, tragic demise.

The screenplay for ‘Diana’ was based on the 2001 book Diana: Her Last Love, by author and former reporter Kate Snell.

It’s worth seeing the biggest, glitziest biopic on Princess Diana’s life to date.

f you’re sick of playing gore-filled games about crime and shooting, and want to use your brain for a change then ‘Scribblenauts Unmasked – A DC Comics Adventure’ might be what you’re looking for.

This game, available for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, is a challenging combination of action and puzzle solving that requires players to summon their imagination as they are presented with problems and scenarios they must fix by typing in words to conjure up items.

Objects that can be used vary dramatically and almost anything you can think of can be summoned up on the screen – while levels start off relatively simple they progress to be harder as the game goes on.

In this game, the DC Comics universe comes to life and the player can create and summon up wellloved characters and objects from the comics to help in the game. The protagonist Maxwell travels through DC Comic realms such as Gotham City, Atlantis, Metropolis and more on a quest to defeat evil villains and restore

fter her jaw-dropping, raunchy performance at the Video Music Awards, former teen star Miley Cyrus has been making headlines and coming up in watercooler conversations all across the globe.

Now the ex-Disney star has finally released her fourth studio album, ‘Bangerz’, and the result is markedly different from her previous music.

While her older songs such as ‘7 Things’, ‘Party in the USA’ and ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ had a dance-pop feel, her recently released material is more hip hop oriented as Cyrus explores different sounds.

The album’s first release, ‘We Can’t Stop’ peaked at number two on the Billboard charts and did well commercially, with its lyrics about wild partying appealing to teenagers and young adults.

It was followed up by second single ‘Wrecking Ball’, which hit the charts in August and proceeded to cause massive controversy. The song’s racy film clip and powerful themes got Cyrus plenty of media coverage, sending it straight to

number one on the charts both in America and internationally.

Other tracks on the controversial star’s album feature special guests including Britney Spears, Nelly and Big Sean. One thing is for sure, this album will continue to be the talk of the town.

Science fiction lovers rejoice! Foxtel has signed a deal with NBC Universal-owned channel Syfy to launch early next year. The channel will be part of the Drama and Lifestyle package and feature classic science fiction and fantasy programming. Syfy will replace the current SciFi channel, which will cease transmission on December 31. There’s still no word yet on what TV1 will be replaced with.

Another hot show hitting our screens later this month is medical series ‘Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’. The eight-part series which will air on Foxtel’s Lifestyle YOU channel features Englishman Dr Christian Jessen plus Aussie GPs Dr Ginni Mansberg, Dr Sam Hay and Dr Brad McKay. ‘The Game Plan’, which aired on their digital channel ONE HD. The show, which began in 2011, was a more intelligent alternative for rugby league fans who want a serious take on the NRL. However, despite getting some of the biggest names in the NRL on the program week to week the show unfairly struggled in the ratings and I put that down to being on its digital channel ONE HD, which can’t be accessed through a standard definition Foxtel box (which most people own). It is a loss and I’ll be interested to see what replaces it.

housands of dollars were raised for the Luke Priddis Foundation throughout various auctions and raffles during last week’s Grand Final Breakfast held at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers.

The annual breakfast, which this year was hosted by comedian Tahir, featured a beautiful performance by ‘X-Factor’ singer Tyler Hudson as well as an entertaining rugby league discussion led by former premiership-winning Panthers Luke Priddis and Ryan Girdler, plus current day Panther Tim Grant and former NRL referee Bill Harrigan. “[This] is about supporting the Luke Priddis Foundation to extend our programs that deliver valuable resources and services to the children of western Sydney living with autism spectrum disorders,” said founder and event organiser, Luke Priddis.

The funds will go towards lego club groups that help promote critical social skills.
