INTERIOR STYLE
JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME
It’s an exciting time for interior design lovers. A plethora of great image sharing platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram gives us access to the very latest in trends straight off the hottest design conventions. If you’re a bower bird like me, and love to collect and decorate as soon as something you fancy catches your eye, you’ll know just how heavy on the pockets this habit can be, so I’ve put together a couple of easy and affordable, high impact tips on how to update your home without having to break the bank.
Makeover ON A BUDGET Ditching the headboard Yes, quite literally ditch your headboard in exchange for a great wall hanging or artwork! Sky’s the limit! This can act as a centrepiece that inspires a new colour scheme and all the other pieces in your bedroom. For example, install a thin rod anywhere between one and 1.5 metres above your bed. Hang your favourite throw on it or an on-trend textile or fabric colour that you love, suspend a collection of gorgeous crystals on some rope or even create your own macramé piece off it if you’re feeling crafty!
Create a DIY statement piece With the abundance of DIY versions of the hottest trends available online, it’s so easy to just find something that suits any skill level to create for a fraction of the price you can purchase it for on the high street. Take this dried plant frond I created (pictured above) as a wall feature for a local cafe for example. It cost me a few minutes of my time to source and approximately one metre of jute rope to bind together and voilà! An original, hand- made bohemian style, dried palm frond art piece!
the knobs on your kitchen and bathroom cabinets can make a big difference in its look and feel. Fashion hardware specialists www.doup.com.au have a huge variety of on- trend door knobs, pulls, handles, hooks and curtain rods on offer in all colours, shapes, styles and forms. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
Change your hardware Sometimes the most subtle changes to a space can make the biggest impact. Updating Friday, April 5, 2019

Autumn ADVICE Autumn has arrived, and now is the best time for gardeners to lay the foundation for a successful gardening year. Here are some tips to ensure your garden thrives this autumn season. Get planting While your soil is still warm from the summer sun and before the winter rain hits, now is the time to start planting. During this time the warmth of the soil allows plants to establish strong root growth before everything slows down in winter. While they may not do as well in winter, spring will bring them to life. Suggestions include: Flowering
bulbs such as Daffodil and Freesia as well as tasty fruit and veggies such as Strawberries, Broccoli and Spinach. Lay down the foundations Taking proper care to fertilise garden beds and lawns will not only help them recover from the drying heat of summer, but give them strength to survive winter’s chill. Out with the old, in with the new Taking the time to prune back plants is essential to achieving a final autumn bloom. The more flowers and fruit a plant produces, the smaller they become. By removing dead, damaged or
diseased flowers and fruits not only do you prevent the spread of disease, but you divert the plants’ energy production into creating
larger though possibly fewer flowers and plants. Enjoy your time in the garden! – Emily Kowal

SIMON’S HOUSE
Window TINTING SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
I’ve lived in my house for 10 years with a whole wall of east facing windows. The summer heat in the room, even with blinds, was unbearable from first thing in the morning. I was getting my car windows tinted one day and spoke to Mal from Forest Window Tinting, he suggested getting my house windows done. I did a year and a half ago, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I can now have my blinds open all day long and enjoy the beautiful sunny days! I went with a reflective tint which has also given privacy during the day, the living room is bearable and my energy bills have been reduced.
Even if you have blinds or curtains, the heat gets in the room, but tint stops it at the glass before it gets in! Did you know that the windows and glass in your home are the biggest source of heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer? In addition to saving on energy bills, there are many other benefits to having your windows tinted,
like protection against glare and heat. It’s a whole lot easier to see my TV now too! Protection against sun damage and fading for your furniture and floors. And added privacy is definitely a bonus. With so many films available, there’ll be one to suit you. Clear tint offers protection but still allows you to keep your view, so there’s no change to the look of your home. Security and safety films help protect from break ins or severe weather by helping hold the glass together, making it stronger and less likely to shatter. Reflective and frosted tints give you more protection and privacy. You know what THAT means? You can dance around to ABBA and the neighbours won’t complain!
