JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME
With so much information accessible to us through all types of media, I know many of you at some point have considered having a go at a bit of DIY styling around the home. Whilst TV shows and online tutorials make it look so easy, there are so many factors to consider. After many years of experience

Starting
A DIY PROJECT as a designer and stylist both here and in the UK, there are a couple of key practical tips that will have you well on your way to styling the space of your dreams without blowing the budget and your sanity. Prioritise and decide what you do and don’t want Whether you’re working on multiple rooms or just one room,
it’s important to get a list together and focus on your priorities. Think about what your ‘must haves’ are and put the most important things on the top of your list, and the not so important ones on the bottom. This will help frame what you allocate on your budget. Another factor that will help you frame your budget is whether you
want high, medium or low end items or a mix of all. Also ask yourself if you are willing to purchase second hand. Websites such as Gumtree as well as local flea markets have some amazing high end pieces for great prices. My tip here is to do your research and know what pieces and styles you are looking for and know how much you are willing to pay for it. Put a realistic budget together Do some research on your priorities in the style you like and see if there are any alternatives in high or low end options. From here you should have a general understanding of the cost of the things you want and put a rough framework of the total costs you think will be involved and set your budget around that. Be realistic and allow for a little extra just in case. Don’t forget to include labour and delivery costs! Allocate time Planning the style overhaul of a space is not easy. Most of you have work, families, study and lives that you ultimately need to get on with. Allocate a couple of hours a day or week to slowly plug away at sourcing, budgeting and eventually installing your space. Whilst sourcing and budgets can be done incrementally, I recommend you install all at once, even if you take a full day or put aside a couple of days to install bigger jobs, it all pays off as there’s nothing worse than having to navigate guests or family around an unfinished space in your home. SIMON’S HOUSE
Ladder SAFETY SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
You can never be too careful when it comes to using a ladder. I’ve been a tradie for 30 years and I can’t tell you how important ladder safety is. You don’t have to fall far from a ladder to be seriously injured. Check out your ladder first. If there is any damage or missing parts, just don’t use it! Here are a few more important things to remember: Always have someone else around, never climb ladders when you’re alone. Position your ladder on stable, non- slippery ground. Make sure it’s secure and all the feet are firmly on the ground. Move the ladder rather than reaching out and always use the
right ladder for the right job. This is very important. Stay right away from power lines.
Most importantly, if you don’t feel comfortable climbing one, don’t do it! Simple steps can help to avoid dangerous mistakes.

INSIDE STORY
Warm up THIS WINTER
Backyard fire pits are becoming increasingly popular as we look to utilise our outdoor spaces year round. Unwinding in front of your own fire at the end of a busy day during the colder winter months is a great way to spend quality time with family and friends. “The ambience a fire pit brings is worth the investment alone,” explains garden and landscape expert, Melissa King. “Adding a fire pit will provide an immediate feature for the garden and become a natural gathering spot for socialising and entertaining and provides warmth as well as a great cooking source. People are naturally drawn to the campfire-like atmosphere.” New from Northcote Pottery’s Glow Outdoor Heating range is a collection of fire pit styles designed to work into a number of different style gardens, backyards and courtyards. For those who love the outdoors, entertaining or star gazing on a cool night, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! The All Aussie Backyard For homes fortunate to have a larger outdoor space to work with, the possibilities are endless when it comes to fire pit options. 37 per cent of respondents from a recent Glow survey stated that they 6

favoured an “Australiana” style backyard. With its rustic wheelbarrow

design, the Carter fire pit (RRP $339) is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, fitting seamlessly into a casual Aussie backyard. The larger sized wood- fired outdoor heater offers a robust design and good heat output, making it perfect for entertaining large groups of family and friends The Entertainer’s Dream As a nation of entertainers, Australians are constantly looking for new ways to take their outdoor space to the next level. A fire pit can add a point of interest to a landscape project or provide a heat source and place for social gatherings. The Picchu fire pit from Glow (RRP $399), offers an architectural design and can be a unique centrepiece to a landscaped back-

yard. With its stylish concrete and black palette, geometric style and minimalist look, Picchu works perfectly with bench seating for a backyard statement for all to enjoy. The Suburban Oasis For city- dwellers with a smaller garden, courtyard or patio that have a lot less space to work with there are smart, more compact design solutions. According to Glow’s survey, 43 per cent of respondents wanted a fire pit that was easy to move and 48 per cent of respondents said cooking was the ideal additional function for their outdoor heater. With this in mind, Glow has introduced Carla (RRP $89), a compact and affordable fire pit that also doubles as a barbeque.
With a modern shape and terrazzo finish, Carla is compact in size and offers contemporary appeal allowing you to add a real wow factor to your outdoor space providing a source of heat and a stylish focal point for entertaining all year round. Patio Spaces Whilst there are a number of options in outdoor heating, choosing a functional option that is fit-for-purpose is vital. For places where an open flame might not be suitable, Glow has just launched The Searchlight 2100W Electric Halogen Heater (RRP $329). Perfect for patios, balconies and more compact spaces, The Searchlight features three heat settings and provides heat for a distance up to two
metres. Being portable gives flexibility to move the heater as required and is the perfect heating solution for areas that would otherwise not be utilised when temperatures dip. No matter what kind of outdoor space you have, Australiana rustic or compact and contemporary, Glow offer a range of 12 different fire pits and an Electric Heater option, guaranteed to turn up the heat and style and ensure we’re able to use these beautiful spaces as much as possible throughout the year. The Glow range, part of Northcote Pottery, is available exclusively through Bunnings Warehouse stores nationwide, and is available now. To find out more about the range, visit northcotepottery.com/glow.
