OVER COST

Who doesn’t love a bargain? But often, bargains are associated with dodgy quality, missing parts or damaged stock. This may be OK for household items that don’t serve much of a purpose, but there are a few home essentials I would most definitely not recommend skimping on for the sake of saving a buck or two... you can thank me later! Bed linen Studies have proven that the quality of our sleep has a direct relationship to our health. That being said, the type of bedding we sleep on contributes to the quality of our sleep. Imagine sleeping in plastic. No thanks! Well cheap and nasty textiles such as polyester are just that! Waking up hot and sweaty is unpleasant, so choose textiles that are breathable and thermo- regulating such as linen or tencel that are not only long lasting and natural, but they feel wonderful on the skin! Candles I have found that when it comes to candles, there are two things that sit high on my must or must not haves. 1. It must be non-toxic. It’s all well and good to have a nice smelling home, but not at the detriment of mine and my loved ones’ health. Look out for things such as wicks that contain lead. Do a quick check into the wick’s core to ensure that there are no metal bits. Also read the label to ensure that the wax does not contain Paraffin. Friday, June 21, 2019

2. It must be scented with essential oils. Natural scents that actually have positive effects on the body is amazing to have in your homes. What about soothing lavender in your bedroom and cleansing citrus in living areas?

Cutlery Have you ever had to cut through a piece of meat with a blunt kitchen knife? Or have a cheap spoon bend when you’ve tried to scoop up a serving of ice cream?

Well, you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to cutlery. It’s essential to touch and feel cutlery before purchasing it from the store. Good quality cutlery can go a very long way! Home & Garden Magazine

How to

NEWS FEATURE

STAY WATER WISE

TV personality, Horticulturist and Northcote Pottery Ambassador, Melissa King, gives her top tips on how to prepare your garden for water restrictions... Level 1 water restrictions were put into play earlier this month across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra for the first time in almost a decade, meaning we need to work together to preserve our water. Roughly 75 per cent of Sydney’s water supply goes to residential users, with a quarter of that share used outdoors in such places as gardens. With the winter months here, now is the perfect time to develop great gardening and watering habits in line with the new water restrictions, keeping your plants looking good and conserving precious moisture. Dam levels have declined faster in the last two years than that of the millennium drought, and inflows are at a level not seen since the 1940’s. This past March was the hottest on record for Australia, and our gardens would have definitely felt the heat before the winter chill hit suddenly. Hand watering is an important and enjoyable part of gardening; the perfect form of meditation! What better way to start your day Friday, June 21, 2019

than getting out there early in the morning, with a hose in one hand and a cuppa in the other; just you, your thoughts and your garden. Hand watering not only gives you the chance to get up close and personal with your plants, and the opportunity to spot early signs that they are unhappy, but also the chance to get on top of pest and disease problems before they take control. Water restrictions in Sydney allow for lawns and gardens to be watered with a hand held hose before 10am or after 4pm each day, providing your hose is fitted with a spray gun. Get your hands on a Nylex Premium spray gun; it has seven different functions for all your watering needs and allows you to easily shut the water on and off with its simple to use click control design, so there’s no wastage. You’ll also need a long-handled spray wand for those hard- toreach places. It’s perfect for watering deep garden beds and allows you to direct the water down low, getting moisture to the roots of your plants. Watering at the roots reduces water loss to wind and evaporation and gets water to where the plants need it most. It also makes sense to water

deeply, but less often. This encourages plants to develop stronger, deeper root systems, giving them a better chance of thriving through dry conditions. In level 1 restrictions, you may water your garden with a drip irrigation system that delivers water directly to the roots of your plants, like the Flat Weeper Hose. Water seeps from thousands of tiny pores, and soaks deep into the soil, minimising water loss. And because it gets water directly to the root system, the plants are happy, there’s less weed growth and less risk of fungal attack. You may also water lawns and gardens with a watering can or bucket at anytime – so get out the big blue Nylex watering can! The watering rose is peppered with small holes that give you an even distribution of fine water droplets, so water can soak deep into the roots and the two handles make it easier to hold and control. Using grey water is another smart way to keep your garden looking good during periods of restrictions without relying on tap or tank water. Use a Nylex premium grey water hose to drain grey

water to buckets or directly into your garden. It is easily connected to your washing machine. Just be sure to use a garden- friendly laundry detergent, disperse the grey water around the garden and use it to water your flower beds and borders – not the vegie patch. It also pays off to improve your soil. So give garden beds a good dose of organic matter, like compost or well- rotted manure to nourish and improve the soil and increase its water holding capacity. Wetting agents can help to overcome water repellence in soils and potting mix to ensure that the water that is being applied can soak deep into the roots. And remember; a well- mulched garden means less water and less work. A good layer of mulch, just 5cm thick, can reduce water evaporation from the soil surface by as much as 70 per cent. It also helps to suppress weeds and gives the whole garden a fresh new look. With time organic mulches like pea straw and lucerne also break down, and in doing so improve the structure and condition of the soil.

SIMON’S HOUSE

Get THREE QUOTES SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU

I know you’ve all probably seen me stomping my feet and waving my arms around when I talk about this subject, but something happened this week that I thought was important to talk about again! And that is the importance of getting and comparing at least three quotes AND also educating yourself on any work you’re having done around your home. I was speaking to a roofer friend of mine and he told me about a client of his that had a leaking roof. She contacted a couple of different roofers and was told by both that she absolutely needed to replace her roof. She was given two quotes, both in the vicinity of $100,000.

Well, my mate looked at the roof and discovered that it didn’t actually need replacing. The tiles were fine and just needed a bit of TLC. He repaired her roof for $7000! My point here is that the first two presented no other option but to replace the roof. It was when she got the third quote that she actually realised there was another choice! When you call in a tradie, make sure you discuss with them ALL the options available, like replace versus repair. One more point I’d like to stress is that by inspecting and maintaining your roof on a regular basis you can save thousands towards the cost of a new one and almost double the life of your existing roof!
